From the Head of School

Summer 2024

Dear Parents, Alumni/ae, and Friends,

The pillars of character education are often incorporated into educational curricula at all school levels, particularly elementary and secondary across the country. Whether professionals list six, nine, or ten pillars, there is no doubt that character education is a vital piece of educating young students and a central part of the fabric of daily life at East Woods School.

From our youngest learners in Pre-Nursery through Eighth Grade, our students learn and live caring, respect, citizenship, fairness, responsibility, and trustworthiness. In a pluralistic world and oftendivided society, East Woods views character education as fundamental to our programming.

Whether it is in a classroom, in the dining room, on the stage, or on a field, values of good character are integrated into all aspects of school life. Our intimate-sized classes allow teachers and administrators to incorporate lessons in character into teachable moments throughout the day. Morning assemblies stress the importance of kindness as well as excellence. Visiting alumni speakers often highlight character development as a hallmark of their East Woods education. This year, we added Wayfinder, a character education program developed at Stanford University, in Grades K through 8. This program helps students develop skills including self-awareness, adaptability, empathy, collaboration, agency, and purpose.

East Woods students graduate with behaviors, attitudes, and outlooks that are inherently value oriented. Our students have an innate ability to see and feel what is right and what is wrong. Indeed, East Woods School is preparing character-based individuals who will continue in secondary school, higher education, and in their careers as peers and leaders with high integrity. We are confident that our students will set an example for others that reflects their education at East Woods.

As you read this edition of On the Hill, know that character education lies behind the photos and the text as a pillar unto itself at East Woods.

With all good wishes and gratitude,

From the Board Co-Presidents

The primary role of the Board of Directors is to ensure the longterm financial viability of the school and to ensure its mission and values for this generation and those to come.
Dear East Woods School community,

With long personal and family histories at East Woods School, it gives us tremendous gratitude for the work that we are able to do as CoPresidents of the Board of Directors. Between the two of us, we wear many hats: parents of lower school and upper school students, member of the alumni community, child of an alum who was also board president, and sibling to three other alumni. In these varied capacities, we have had the opportunity to see East Woods School at many stages of its evolution. What is most heartening for us is the enduring mission of strength of character and academic excellence at the school’s foundation.

In our role as Co-Presidents of the Board of Directors we focus squarely on the continuous improvement of the institution itself, while we are informed by our experiences and our history. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our Head of School, Mrs. Laura Kang, who continues to lead with a highly experienced hand. We are also so grateful to our fellow board members who contribute time, talent, and treasure to the betterment of the school with their thoughtfulness and resources. We would be remiss if we did not thank our faculty and staff whose dedication to the school, our mission, and

especially our students is what makes East Woods the special place that it is.

The primary role of the Board of Directors is to ensure the long-term financial viability of the school and to ensure its mission and values for this generation and those to come. We achieve this by supporting the Head of School in her role as overseer of the school’s operations, including all things curricular and extracurricular, as well as community relations with current and prospective families as well as alumni, past parents, grandparents and all other constituents. Indeed, the role of Head of School is all encompassing. How fortunate we are to have Mrs. Kang in this role for the past seven years.

As we look to our next school year, we will continue to focus on supporting academic excellence and character building programs, as well as our admissions, marketing, and fundraising engines. In these last areas, we call upon our parent and alumni community for your support. Word-of-mouth is a key driver of our admissions and marketing efforts. Additionally, there is no doubt that we rely on our parents and our alumni to support our ongoing operational budget and our endowment with your financial

gifts as best you can within your own financial means. We are so grateful for your partnership in these areas.

In closing, let us say how honored we are to take on the responsibility as Co-Presidents of the Board of Directors of this fine institution. We will continue to work hard for you, our entire school community, to ensure the school’s superior standing for many years to come.

Respectfully yours, Brad Ketcher, P’27 Co-President Fern Senior ’97, P’30, ’32 Co-President

Curriculum

Academic Excellence at East Woods School

The teachers and administrators are constantly reviewing the program to meet the needs of our students and create a more advantageous environment to help foster academic growth and excellence.

At the beginning of every year under the leadership of Head of School, Mrs. Laura Kang, mentions two important parts of an East Woods School education, academic excellence and kindness. Those two characteristics have become a hallmark of an education at the school. So, how do we define and quantify academic excellence? In my 25 years of working at the school, there has been a constant stream of evaluation on a daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly basis of our program and students. The teachers and administrators are constantly reviewing the program to meet the needs of our students and create a more advantageous environment to help foster academic growth and excellence.

In order to provide the best academics, there is an end in mind to provide a pathway to excellence, which starts with a review of secondary school placements over the years. East Woods School is unique in that it sends students to boarding, private, parochial, and public schools across the country, and it accepts students from other countries. The curriculum needs to ensure students excel in any environment after graduation regardless of which school a student will be attending. Over the last several years, students have attended some of the most prestigious schools in our area, Friends Academy, Portledge School, Stony Brook School, and Chaminade, in New York City, Regis High School and Avenues the World School,

and boarding schools such as Philips Exeter, Choate Rosemary Hall and the George School. This is a distinguished list of schools, and every year our students flourish academically at all of them, with most being placed in honors sections. This year, the acceptances of the members of Class of 2024 has been equally exceptional.

In an age where the United States educational system seems to be directed at the 50th percentile, East Woods has strived to raise the bar and push the students to achieve more, to strive for excellence. In the East Woods School environment, the students raise the level of their work ethic with the guidance of the teachers, who foster the learning process. Once the students reach 5th grade, they are introduced to their first high school class, Spanish. We have the students take Spanish 1 in 5th and 6th grades and Spanish 2 in 7th and 8th grades. This continues in science, where our students will take a high school level Earth Science course in 7th Grade and the Living Environment course in 8th Grade. As we have become a more global society, the students study Ancient History in 5th Grade, World Cultures and Geography in 6th Grade, and American History in 7th and 8th grades. In English, each grade has put an emphasis on writing and reading literature classics, such as Gods and Monsters of the Greek Myths (5th), The Giver (6th), Of Mice and Men (7th), A Midsummer Night’s Dream (7th), Night (8th), and Romeo and Juliet (8th). In addition, each student will hone in their writing skills and find their voice by 8th Grade, where they will write at least ten formal essays focusing on responding to literature and adding sources within the text. In order to lift the barriers of mathematics, we created a schedule to enable movement based on math aptitude with students having the ability to move up several grade levels. This allows students to attend a math class that will help them excel and continue to foster their excellence.

East Woods School is small by design, and this enables us to be nimble and make changes based on the best current practices. We are able to challenge students in areas of strength as well as provide support for students who need additional help if needed. Because we are small, this help can be delivered in one-on-one time with faculty or in our Learning Center. Our math program will be changing in 2024-2025 to better meet the needs of our students, and the writing program is under review with changes occurring in 2025-2026. The previous programs were strong, however,

with the focus on excellence, there was a decision to change to more current materials and push students to achieve at a higher level. In most schools, this would take years of lead time, but with the determination of our faculty, the process only took a few months. Being small by design can be extremely advantageous for a myriad of reasons, curriculum adjustments and program changes are just a couple of those benefits.

To strive for academic excellence, it takes a whole community to buy into the endeavor. It starts with committed administrators, astute faculty members, parental involvement, and students ready and willing to learn. The classes are challenging and require an extremely high work ethic, but the implementation of strategies to teach students resilience at an early age helps them reach for excellence and fosters a growth mindset. Settling for mediocrity has never been a part of an East Woods School education, and along with the whole community, we will continue to focus on academic excellence.

The Multidimensional Nature of Art

What’s not to love about art? As a form of self-expression, communication, meditation, and simple enjoyment, art at East Woods allows students to develop their own voice and a way to express themselves.

Indeed, art is much more than colored pencils, paints, and paper. It is a way one reveals thoughts, emotions, and joys.

Mr. Tim Daly, the Art teacher at East Woods, has a balanced and beautiful approach to his instruction. All students are given the tools and knowledge to blend colors and shapes. What Mr. Daly inspires is the thoughtfulness for each student to add their own meaning to this form of personal expression.

While art can be very individualistic, it is also very much a community activity in which collaboration and respectfulness are deeply woven into the curriculum at East Woods. In critiquing the work of fellow students, boys and girls understand that art is a reflection not only of talent but also of personality. Therefore, critiques are not critical but are positive and supportive.

On a practical level, East Woods students learn, in a sequential way, the foundational building blocks of art. This ranges at a fundamental level from simple shapes to distinguishing when to use colored pencils or when to use markers, and then to forming images out of clay, the use of mold making, and slip casting.

When walking through the main hall of East Woods, one can see the results of our art

curriculum hung on the walls or displayed on the shelves. Students also participate in creating play bills for our musicals, the annual holiday card, and making their own smocks.

Additionally, Upper School students are central to creating sets for our plays and musicals. In fact, set design in itself is a branch of art that students learn about and take a hands-on approach.

We invite you to come to the Art room at East Woods which reveals an incredibly vibrant program in multiple art media and which demonstrates the joy that our students have in this important form of self-expression.

Another East Woods Distinction: Metalsmithing

Metalsmithing at East Woods School is even more distinctive among independent schools than just the practice of working with silver, copper, and brass. The class at East Woods has an interdisciplinary approach that incorporates science, technology, engineering, art, mathematics (STEAM), and history, as well as writing.

Dr. Catherine Knight, who is our metalsmithing teacher, grew up in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, the daughter of a Bethlehem Steel engineer. She learned metalsmithing in high school where she learned by doing. Catherine received a Bachelor’s degree in art education from Kutztown University of Pennsylvania, where she took two courses in silversmithing. She began collecting tools for metalsmithing and developed an interest in gemstones as well. Dr. Knight ultimately went on to earn her Master’s from LIU, NYS SDA/SBA from Stony Brook University, and her Doctorate in Education from Fordham University.

It was in the early 1970s that she met her husband, the late Tom Knight, at a Ten Wheel Drive concert in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Tom would later become East Woods woodworking teacher for 43 years. Wanting a larger experience than a small city in Pennsylvania, Catherine took the art teaching job at East Woods School in 1974, hired by the headmaster at the time, Jim Adams. A year later, Tom also joined East Woods faculty. After Tom passed away in 2022 and the woodshop was dedicated in his memory, Catherine was asked by Mrs. Kang to come back to East Woods to teach metalsmithing.

Students in the metalsmithing class make jewelry beginning with a simple silver ring. They learn about sizing, forging, soldering, polishing and

setting semi-precious gemstones, including jade, onyx, tiger’s eye, turquoise and many others. Students understand that different stones have different uses, different lusters, and different grades of hardness and pliability.

“At some point in their lives, students will find themselves in a jewelry store purchasing a meaningful piece for themselves or a loved one,” explained Dr. Knight. “After their metalsmithing experiences at East Woods they will truly be an educated consumer.”

Dr. Knight is introducing a writing component to the class as well. Students will explain their thoughts and processes for metalsmithing in essay format. In addition, she instituted the Silver Bowl Competition last year in which student teams are asked questions about metalsmithing and debate their responses. Dr. Knight says that history is also an important component of what she teaches. She notes that famous jeweler Louis Comfort Tiffany lived within walking distance of East Woods School. On that property still stands a brick minaret with Tiffany glass windows. She looks forward to teaching an adult program at East Woods as well.

How lucky we are to have a true metalsmithing artisan on our faculty at East Woods School. It gives us yet another distinction from other independent schools.

IN MEMORY

MR. TOM KNIGHT

DECEMBER 17, 1947 - JUNE 5, 2022

Thomas Leroy Knight wore many hats over the course of his forty-three years as a member of the faculty of East Woods School. Beginning in 1975, Tom joined East Woods School as an Industrial Arts teacher, instructing students in third through ninth grades in woodworking and metalsmithing. While this was the core of Mr. Knight’s role at East Woods, he took on multiple other responsibilities, which touched many aspects of school life. These included being the yearbook coordinator, and audio/visual coordinator for school plays, commencement, and other events. Tom, who studied mechanical engineering at Pratt Institute and radio, television, and film production at New Institute of Technology, was active in so many other school events and activities. These included being the announcer at the annual Spring Fair and trip chaperone to Williamsburg, Philadelphia, and Shelter Island. Tom was also part of many aspects of school life many of which were behind the scenes - for which the School is incredibly grateful. Tom’s wife Catherine was the K-9 arts teacher from 1974 until 1982 and is now back at East Woods teaching metalsmithing. Their daughter, Christiana and son Devon are alumnae of East Woods, having attended from Nursery through the Eighth grade. Tom certainly was part of the fabric of the East Woods School community.

Athletics at East Woods School

Physical fitness and athletics are integral parts of the East Woods School education. Students are given knowledge and skills to be physically fit and to play competitive sports while understanding the important values of teamwork, sportsmanship, and fair play.

Mr. Troy Walker, East Woods Athletic Director, is a dynamic combination of instructor and trainer as well as coach and mentor. A particularly meaningful quote for Mr. Walker is, “Knowing is not enough. We must apply. Willing is not enough. We must do.” Mr. Walker is certainly a doer and brings a growth mindset to his work to inspire students to challenge themselves on and off the field.

Character development is also a significant part of Mr. Walker’s instruction, whether it is among our youngest students learning to jump rope, or our Eighth Graders competing on a softball or lacrosse field in the interscholastic program. Sportsmanship, teamwork, fair play, and cooperation are central to the East Woods athletic program at all grade levels.

Indeed, Mr. Walker sees athletics both for its physical benefits and its social-emotional benefits. He remarks that team success is often founded in collaboration, resiliency, and a strong work ethic. He is proud of our students and their achievements in personal physical fitness as well as in team sports.

East Woods students regularly approach athletics with a positive spirit of enthusiasm. Good luck to the East Woods Spartans in the year to come!

East Woods Vocal and Instrumental Arts

East Woods longstanding commitment to vocal and instrumental arts has been an important component to the curriculum.

Wendy de Clareville Kemper from the Class of 1954 remarked at the 75th Anniversary Gala, that, “Music was a very strong program” in the 1950s - underscoring the long commitment that the school has had to both vocal and instrumental arts education. The program continues to display the school’s strength in music, chorus, and band under the direction of Ms. Margaret Corbett for music and Upper School chorus and Mr. Alexander Prince, our Band Director. Both teachers assist our Performing Arts Directors in school play productions.

East Woods voice instruction occurs in all grades of the Lower and Upper School. An early objective is for the student to gain a comfort level with their own singing voice, blending in with other voices around them, singing in close proximity to others, singing together in groups, and beginning in Pre-K, singing solo. East Woods is a community in which students are encouraged to have a voice at a young age, to be comfortable speaking and singing, in front of others.

The instrumental program begins by learning to play the recorder in Third Grade. In Fourth Grade, all students must participate in band. They are given a demonstration of the instruments to choose from in Third Grade and present their top three choices. Instruments include flute, clarinet, oboe, saxophone,

trombone, and French horn. Students may also select percussion. In the Upper School, students may choose chorus if they wish. They participate in the winter and spring concerts as well as in the school’s musical productions and plays. The band also plays at Commencement.

Dovetailing with vocal and instrumental arts is the school’s vibrant performing arts program. Each year, students have opportunities to perform in school plays and musicals including the Upper School Play, the Fifth Grade Play, and Broadway Bound. Students gain confidence, collegiality, and a wonderful sense of shared community through the performing arts program.

Performing Arts

Performing Arts is a vibrant part of the East Woods program. Over the past three years, productions have included

Lion King, Aladdin Jr., Elf The Musical, Little Mermaid, Disney Descendants, Fame Jr., and The Wizard of Oz.

Tips for Keeping Children Reading Over the Summer

•Give children access to different types of books and keep them in easy-to-find places at home and in the car.

•Listen to audiobooks in the car on road trips.

•Take your children to bookstores or your public library and let them choose books that appeal to their interests. Participate in reading programs through your library.

Around Campus

Over the past few years, the East Woods School campus has seen a number of wonderful upgrades. With deep thanks to parent and alumni donors, these improvements have included a renovation of the Bartlett House, the Gate House, new lighting, new playground features, and a new pool for the summer program.

Located just on the edge of campus, the Bartlett House was once home to faculty member, Mr. Steve Bartlett. This home has been wonderfully renovated with new bathrooms, kitchen, plumbing, heating and upgraded electrical wiring, new windows, interior and exterior paint. The house’s landscaping has also been replanted, walkway has been replaced, and a patio has been rebuilt in the back. Now the Bartlett House is the residence of our Director of Athletics, Mr. Troy Walker, and his family. After many years of lying dormant, new life has happily come to the Bartlett House.

The upper apartment of the Gate House, just inside the entrance off Yellow Cote Road, has also been renovated. The apartment has received new flooring, kitchen, windows, bathrooms and fresh interior paint. It is home to Miki Araki-Daly and Tim Daly and their family. Mr. Daly leads East Woods Art and Set Design.

Over the past year, a new pool was constructed for the school’s vibrant summer program. Older but still new are the driveway light posts and new playground features for our youngest students on the back lawn.

As an ongoing part of the work of the school’s Buildings and Grounds Committee, Trustee committee members are continually assessing

maintenance and other capital projects inside and outside the school building. Through the wonderful generosity of members of the East Woods School parent and alumni community, we have been able to make continuous upgrades to the school and will continue to do so with thoughtful consideration.

Parents Association

East Woods School was founded in 1946 by a committed group of parents who wanted the very best education for their children. Parents were then and have always been part of the fabric of the school – supportive, caring, involved. Our parent community today remains steadfast in their dedication to East Woods, our mission, and the students we educate.

East

Woods embraces our family community and we believe that engaged and involved parents are central to what makes our school so unique.

Since our founding days, parents have been part of many aspects of school life. From those who serve as trustees, to those who are part of the Parents Association, and those who volunteer occasionally - all parent involvement is welcomed and so appreciated. The formal structure of the Parents Association led by two overall leaders, or co-chairs, and individual class parents, successfully forms warm and welcoming friend groups who share many common bonds with their grade’s families and across grade levels.

The Parents Association and its many members are involved in a range of school events, large and small, with the overall goal of supporting a successful and happy educational experience for all East Woods children.

It is in this spirit that we would like to recognize, with gratitude, the parents who have served as Co-Chairs of the Parents Association. Parents Association Co-Chairs: Kim D’Agostino and Erica-Kim Sheriff DeJesu

Getting to Know our Assistant Head of School

At the 2024 commencement exercises, our Assistant Head of School, and Head of the Upper and Lower Schools, Alex Carter, received milestone recognition for achieving 25 years as a member of the East Woods School faculty.

After having graduated from Wesleyan University in 1997 with a degree in American Studies, Alex spent two years at Rectory School, a junior boarding school, and two summers at Salisbury School, both in Connecticut. It was at Salisbury that he was interviewed by the East Woods School Headmaster, Jim Ferrer, who took a road trip to see Alex at Salisbury to interview him for a position at East Woods.

At Wesleyan, Alex studied English and History and was most interested in modern U.S. history, particularly the Second World War and global 20th century social and civic unrest, including those which took place in Africa, Iraq, and, of course, Germany during World War II. He also enjoyed comparative religion classes, studying the parallels between Judaism, Islam, and Christianity. Among the many appealing aspects to Alex, Mr. Ferrer was impressed by his ice hockey talent. Alex played four years at Wesleyan and was the captain of the team in his senior year. East Woods ice hockey was extremely popular at the time with upwards of 35 members, boys and girls, on the team. The school needed a coach and Mr. Ferrer found the perfect fit in Alex.

While East Woods put him a bit further away from his hometown of Plattsburgh, New York and his father, who at the time was suffering major health issues, Alex preferred a day school

to a boarding school to be able to see his father on weekends. (25 years later dad is active and healthy!) Alex was hired to be an English teacher as well as coach of ice hockey, baseball, and soccer.

In literature, Alex enjoys reading and discussing with his students, authors including Shakespeare, Malcolm Gladwell, JD Salinger, and George Orwell. He’s currently rereading Blink by Malcolm Gladwell and We Were Liars by E. Lockhart, which he will discuss with his eighth grade students this fall.

Mr. Ferrer began giving Alex administrative duties quickly. He soon took over administrative leadership of the Student Council and, under the early tenure of Headmaster, Nathaniel Peirce, was named Head of the Upper School following a national search. At the age of 27, Alex found himself as Head of the Upper School as well as the eighth grade English teacher, and ice hockey coach.

Since then, Alex has done a wide array of administrative duties, as Head of both the Upper and Lower Schools. He also oversees discipline, scheduling for all grades from early childhood through grade 8, and student advisory. These functions are in addition to his continued work to teach eighth grade history and English.

Alex has two children with his wife, Ranel. A daughter who will be a freshman at Shenandoah University Conservatory for musical theater and a son, who is an East Woods alum, and will be a senior at Portledge this fall. In his free time, Alex enjoys spending time with friends and family, in addition to fitness, concerts, the beach and barbecues.

East Woods School also has its foundation in a group of devoted individuals, our founding parents, whose commitment over 75 years ago formed the legacy which is our mission.

Over the years new generations of parents have carried on that tradition of dedication to the school. We are eternally grateful for two parents who “graduated“ from East Woods School in 2023. They are Michèle Bahnik Mercier and Kevin Mercier. Michèle and Kevin are the parents of twin boys, Henry ’19 and George ’19, and Eddie ’23. Henry is now at Providence College, George is at the University of Colorado Boulder, and Eddie is at Portledge School.

Michèle and Kevin demonstrated unwavering commitment to the mission of East Woods over their long tenure as members of our parent community. Whether they were volunteering at the Spring Fair, Spring Dinner Dance, as Class Parent, or more deeply as members of our Board of Trustees (each one served as a trustee of the school), Michèle and Kevin were always thoughtful and considered their role not only as parents but as stewards of a mission that has endured for generations. Having served on various board committees, including strategic planning, buildings and grounds, education, and athletics, and having served on the search committee for our Head of School, the number

of hours they committed to East Woods was extraordinary over their thirteen year tenure.

The Mercier’s generosity in resources of time, talent, and treasure could not be understated. It was extensive, heartfelt, and mission aligned. At the East Woods 2023 Gala, Michèle and Kevin were honored for their dedication to the school. They truly left an indelible mark on the institution as leaders and as examples of true stewards and enduring friends. The school continues to look forward to a long relationship with the Merciers as members of our close knit Past Parent community and their sons as alumni.

Thank you to Michèle and Kevin for all you have done for East Woods School.

75th Gala

75th Anniversary Gala a Wonderful Celebration

75th Anniversary Gala Honoring Christena Luce McNicol ’71 with Honorary Guest Speaker, Gwendolyn (Wendy) de Clairville Kemper ’54

No matter how much time passes, there are some memories that can never be rubbed away. Such is the case with the enchanting evening of the East Woods School 75th Anniversary Gala. Taking place in a tent on the north lawn of the school’s forty-five-acre campus, more than two hundred guests gathered to salute the school and pay tribute to its honoree, Christena (Christie) Luce McNicol, Class of 1971.

The event also welcomed its honorary guest speaker, Gwendolyn (Wendy) de Clairville Kemper ’54. Wendy made charming remarks that took us down memory lane and regaled the audience with old photos of the school and stories of her family’s important history in the founding of the school.

The Gala instituted The East Woods Medal for Exemplary Service, awarding it to Christie for her unparalleled commitment to East Woods over many years. When presenting the award, William Sheeline ’69, a long-time friend and classmate of Christie’s made heartwarming remarks saying, “East Woods has always taught well the things, big and small, that matter in life. What is extraordinary about Christie is that she has exemplified those lessons in her service to the school, not for months, not for years, but for decades. Character reveals itself over time, and we all know this about Christie - her devotion to

the school, to her family and friends, and to our community has been unwavering.”

The event was a wonderful celebration of the school’s achievements and its promise to remain true to its mission for another 75 years.

The East Woods Medal for Exemplary Service

Given to those who have shown extraordinary generosity to East Woods School in spirit, talent, and resources. Over some years, these individuals have demonstrated an exceptional and steadfast care for the mission of East Woods. They are remarkable in their ambassadorship on behalf of the school, their enthusiasm for our school community, and their interest in advocating the high value of an East Woods education to those they meet. The inaugural East Woods Medal for Exemplary Service is given in October 2021 to Christena Luce McNicol ’71.

REMARKS

Good evening. With all the anxiety each of us has experienced these last years, it’s such an extra special pleasure to join you in our very own comfort zone, East Woods School. I’m very proud to have been asked to address you this evening. It’s only proper that we must step aside and toast the people with a great vision, the founders, one of whom was my father, Raymond de Clairville. East Woods opened its doors in 1946 in West Hills under the leadership of Mr. MacArthur. A house my grandfather owned was rented back to the school for one dollar. Second grade was the top class and a new grade was added each year. I was always in the oldest class and for many years at East Woods we never had a gym or any organized sports, it was always kick-the-can and capturethe-flag. My memory of science was the pond outside the library where guppies were caught and brought to class to watch them mature into frogs. Music was a very strong program. We had a wonderful teacher who played the flute for the New York Philharmonic. Latin was a must, along with French - neither one my strong suit. We

never moved from room to room and all subjects were taught by the same teacher.

Years later I returned as a parent of three boys, Tony, who is here tonight, Stephen and Christopher, to find wonderful changes - a gym, an organized sports program, new classrooms, and a very strong and very vibrant school. At this time of celebration, it is important to know the strengths of many of our generations during these 75 years. I need you to hang in with me, this is very complicated. My grandmother was a bridesmaid for my second grade dear friend Sandy Lipson Cornell Ryon whose parents were friends of my parents and Sandy’s children went to East Woods and today they are all good friends. In fact, our son lives across the street from one of them. Just imagine, this is only one story that can be told about our school and families.

During the many years as a parent, I became involved in fundraising, finding innovative ideas for the very strong parent group. Some of our programs were the clothes exchange, frozen foods, and of course the East Woods fair. I was

treasurer of the Fair and spent long evenings with others counting and rolling pennies, we do not have checks or credit cards. Both my husband and my father were trustees. As my sons went off to boarding school, I found myself ready to step out into the working world. We came home one Saturday from a business trip to find our five-yearold son Christopher standing in the driveway receiving his prize. He had bought at the East Woods School Fair a raffle ticket for twenty-five cents and he won a very small, very lively, very stubborn, Sicilian donkey. We kept the donkey and Eeyore lived with the Kemper’s and our nextdoor neighbors Jim and Peggy Smith for the next five years. We received phone calls from the Lloyd Harbor Police at 6 o’clock one morning with Eeyore loose on Southdown Road. My husband was dressed for the train and with his hat filled with oats he enticed the donkey back into the corral, put his hat back on his head, and a few oats, and off he went to the train. East Woods was wonderful!

A group of twelve ladies started a store in Cold Spring Harbor called Gilliewrinkles, Christie’s mother, Margie Howe, was a partner in this adventure. Ten years later, I started with a parent of East Woods a flower business called Mill Pond Flowers, which led to my final career of twentytwo years as a bridal consultant. Many of my clients were parents of East Woods which helped

me become a confident person and in building a successful company.

I retired to a community in Charleston, South Carolina and I wondered what a meaningful way I could best use my time and energy. A friend suggested I become a mentor in a men’s prison, how right he was. Today, I work once a week going to the prison with about forty men and five of us and work on helping them understand life outside the walls. We use a workbook with fifteen lessons and give homework which they can submit to the parole board. They can then apply for housing upon release. We get them jobs and teach them skills in banking and other chores. We instill in them the words you all heard from your parents and teachers: Responsibility, commitment, respect, accountability, and, of course, punctuality.

I could never have achieved my goals without the very solid foundation I received from my parents and the wonderful teachers at East Woods. I hope you will find as much joy in life as I have and I’m continuing to have. (Wendy then showed a short video of some old East Woods photos.) This is the lawn at my graduation but I can’t call it a graduation because they didn’t know what to do with someone leaving in Eighth Grade. I received a citation and the citation read that I was a good citizen. That was in 1953 and the first Ninth Grade

Christena Luce McNicol ’71, came to the podium to receive the award presented by Bill Sheeline ’69, and made the following remarks as the Honoree of the 75th Anniversary Gala.

graduated in 1954 and I am the oldest student of East Woods at the age of 83. Thank you.

BY

“Thank you Bill for those kind words and for your incredible work and support for East Woods over the years.

First, it is an honor for me to accept this award from East Woods and I do so with humility and gratitude and I want to thank the Board of Trustees for it and all of you who are here tonight for your continued support of East Woods.

But I assure you my craziness is not without justification. East Woods is worthy of our support and loyalty.

It has provided many of us and our children with a wonderful education and experience. It has provided us with lifelong friends from the ranks of our classmates, fellow parents, faculty and administrators. It has provided us with a sense of common belonging to something good and valuable….something worth protecting and preserving.

We may all have our own dysfunctional families….or slightly dysfunctional families…but with East Woods we have a shared and beloved slightly dysfunctional family!

In one form or another, we have faced and will continue to face at East Woods all of the issues and challenges faced by all schools, public and private. But we do it at East Woods together and with a spirit of cooperation and shared responsibility. Everyone pitches in and shares the load….whether it’s raising money, building playgrounds, serving on the Board, or flipping burgers. We all contribute what we can.

My problem is….I actually love doing it.

I would like to thank my wonderful husband, Paul, and our beautiful daughter, Campbell, for their support and understanding of my 30 plus years of meetings at our house, massive mailings from our dining room, and me taking off to host another alumni reception. I’m happy to report that Laura and Sean are now reaching out to Campbell as much as me.

You’ve heard enough about me….I am one of many, many dedicated alums, teachers, administrators and employees who make East Woods work. I genuinely believe that East Woods deserves that dedication.

And it is all of you….with your generosity and commitment…who have kept East Woods afloat and sailing in the right direction for 75 years.

Long may she sail!

Thank you all and enjoy the party. You have earned it.”

Commencement Celebrations

Commencement exercises at East Woods School are replete with tradition. They take place on the back lawn, which many years ago was a reflecting pool. Graduates are seated on the patio overlooking the audience and expansive grounds. As one views the ceremony, the school’s beautiful Georgian mansion forms the backdrop.

What could be a more fitting location for a school in its eight decade providing a superior educational experience for students on the North Shore of Long Island?

Graduates wear white dresses and blue blazers. They enter to Pomp and Circumstance. An invocation by a notable guest is given which sets the tone for the ceremony. The Head of School welcomes students and families and she salutes the graduating class for their character and accomplishments.

Traditions continue as returning alumni/ae receive an award for service and generosity to community and make remarks about the value they still hold in their East Woods education. Faculty are recognized for their years of service and excellence. A faculty speaker, chosen by the graduating class, reflects upon their role in the student experience and offers guidance for years ahead.

Students then receive recognition and honors for excellence in subject matter both curricular and extracurricular. The Upper School Chorus sings a song especially selected for the occasion. Diplomas are awarded by the board presidents as the Head of School reflects upon each student individually. The school song is sung. Graduates are then congratulated and greeted by members of family, faculty, and alumni.

East Woods embraces these traditions as it does its commitment to its mission and long-standing values. The uniqueness of the day is found in its beauty, simplicity, and tradition. How wonderful to be a part of the wonderful East Woods Commencement Exercises.

James E. Gay Award

The James E. Gay Alumni/ae Awards are presented annually to an alumnus and an alumna “who have shown a sense of commitment and dedication to a personal challenge.

These qualities typify the life of Jim Gay who devoted his energies to being an outstanding teacher and a close friend to three generations of East Woods students, parents, and alumni/ae.”

The 2022 winners of the award were brother and sister, Michael Azzoni ’76 and Kip Azzoni Doyle ’78. The 2023 awardees were Fern Senior ’97 and George Kakoulides ’90, and the 2024 awardees were Augusta Reese Donohue ’85 and H. Carter Hilliard ’97.

2022

In 2022, the James E. Gay Alumni/ae Award was given to brother and sister, Michael Azzoni ’76 and Kip Azzoni Doyle ’78 for their work to support Ukrainian refugees who fled their war-torn country. The Azzoni’s efforts brought medical supplies, food, and clothing for thousands of refugees to camps in Poland. Accompanying them were veterans from an organization that Kip’s husband, Mark Doyle, founded called Rags of Honor; a non-profit that supports military veterans and their families that are either homeless or at-risk. The support includes training, education, assistance, and when needed, housing.

We salute Kip and Michael for their extraordinary work to support Ukrainian refugees and U.S. veterans.

Kip Azzoni Doyle ’78 remarks to the 2022 graduating class:

I attended Brooks School, graduating the first co-ed class which was only significant in that it taught me the term pioneer. We were 12 girls at a formerly all-boys school. Truth is, the school really didn’t know what to do with us girls so we kind of taught them what we wanted to do. From there I took a long shot and a redeye and went all the way out to California to leave the East Coast behind. Pomona College. Played Varsity tennis and grew a bit more accustomed

to So Cal life across country. I somehow got spotted and recruited for Wilhelmina Models (the Wilhelmina Modeling Agent was asking me all sorts of questions and I must have looked quite fancy with my mouth agape and a repeated “Huh?” “What is Wilhelmina?”

Somehow it worked out well for me and I transferred back to NYU so I could model during the day, attend school at night. I then went on to NYU Tisch/ Gallatin for my Masters in Dramatic Writing. I have built a slate of screenplays ever since and after a lifetime of toiling away, I have landed several development deals in L.A. for scripts I wrote covering eclectic stories from deep in the Amazon Jungle where I lived and recounted the plight of the Yanomami indigenous people at the brutal hands of the illegal gold miners pillaging their lands. To a story called “The Decks” about a young girl growing up on fishing boats in Maine with the great dream of becoming a top female DJ in NYC’s underground house music world. To the barrios of Venezuela where I was embedded with the counter kidnapping team and wrote the story of Venezuela’s collapse into violence and poverty.

All the while, I felt lucky to have had 4 incredible kids: Kalypso, Celeste, Sybilla and Marco, now all grown and rocking the big world, some of their college friends even were EWS students themselves. I was also so lucky to have the best folks. Mom for her super smarts and pioneering achievements as a female doctor among so many men back in her med school days, and Dad, once on the East Woods School Board of Trustees, had like most of our parents and grandparents, survived world wars and battles and little did any of us know when we were young. In his older days, Dad recounted his experience as a 19-year-old corpsman in the Marines on Iwo Jima in World War II. I wrote down his story and it was published in Purple Heart Magazine. I was fortunate to hear the life that I never knew about and what Dad had been through. When Dad passed away, I came to realize his compassion for his fellow veterans. At the same time, my oldest daughter Kalypso’s fiancée, himself a Marine, sadly took his life. I went to work through the nonprofit I had established to write and produce a Public Service Announcement and a short film with Martin Sheen around the veteran suicide epidemic. I dedicated it to Steven in Dad’s honor. It has all come down to the one line I wrote: “The worst part of war should not be coming home.”

About this time, I remarried a great guy, Mark Doyle and together we have dedicated our entrepreneurial work to building Rags of Honor, a t-shirt and apparel company devoted to hiring homeless and at-risk veterans. From there I started Veteran Roasters Coffee and RnR Brews, a beer company - all with the same missiondriven products that offer the dignity of a JOB to those men and women who sacrificed so much for our freedoms. Mark has taught me a great expression: “Someone, somewhere out there who you have never met or never will know, wore the uniform so we didn’t have to. Some have made the ultimate sacrifice so we could enjoy our freedom here.” For that, we have devoted our efforts to helping in the veteran community. I am currently working on a documentary with an award-winning war correspondent and military documentarian to tackle the critical story called VETERAN where we will track six active military men and women for one year as they transition back into civilian life.

When the horrific war broke out unprovoked in Ukraine, I was riffing with Jimmy, our very talented designer and a Navy veteran. We talked about doing something to help out. Jimmy saw the image of a female Ukrainian soldier with a blue and yellow flower in her hair. We researched the “Glory To Ukraine” slogan and ended up

making a Rags of Honor T shirt which we were fortunate enough to sell with a group of local school kids. All proceeds from that effort go to the orphanages in Ukraine doing God’s work. We then joined up with a group of Combat medics and Special Forces veterans who heard about our efforts. When they asked for help, we said we were receiving donations of clothing, medical supplies and tactical gear which we would all go together to help distribute in Ukraine. We lugged 30 plus sea bags full of gear and headed to Korczawa along the Ukrainian border to help the Ukrainian refugees coming by the busloads from their war-torn country. We returned home to Chicago to 13 pallets of additional gear that people had been donating. We returned to Ukraine to bring these supplies over and I will continue to film the combat medics deep in Ukraine helping on the front line.

When asked what this was like? The worst of humanity has brought out the best. People across the world have come together to help the besieged Ukrainians. How are they as a people? Ukrainians are proud people. They are in desperate need of help, but they are not desperate people. They are heroic and it has been my honor to help our veterans as we all work together to support the fine, strong Ukrainian people.

If there’s one thing I can say: In giving one receives so much more. The chance to help others makes everything worth it. We do our best to do some good.

Thanks for this recognition. It means so very much to me. Mr. Gay always called me his Kiplet, and my parents would be so thrilled. East Woods is a very important place in all of the Azzoni’s hearts.

2023

In 2023, Fern Senior ’97 and George Kakoulides ’90 were the awardees of the James E. Gay Alumni/ae Award. In addition to being alumni, Fern and George are parents of current East Woods students. Fern’s children are the school’s first 3rd generation students from the same family with their grandmother, Robin Gimbel Senior ’68, also an alum of the school. Both Fern and George have served the school as members of its Board of Trustees, supporting the school’s strategic direction and mission. Fern is currently a Co-President of the Board. Fern received her undergraduate degree

from Williams College and MBA from the Stern School of Business at NYU. Fern has had a career in marketing and business development, most recently at Showtime Networks. Fern also serves as Vice President of the Board for the Community Foundation of Oyster Bay, an organization that provides grants and social support services in the Oyster Bay area.

George received a Bachelor’s degree in biology and philosophy from NYU. He then acquired his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine. During that period, he also completed a joint master’s degree in international relations at The Fletcher School of Law and diplomacy at Tufts University. After receiving his medical degree, he completed his residency in neurological surgery at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, followed by an advanced fellowship in complex spine surgery. He is a board-certified neurosurgeon. During Covid, George provided vital medical guidance to Head of School, Mrs. Kang, as she navigated the education of our students during the pandemic.

Congratulations Fern and George. We are honored to have you among the ranks of our James E. Gay award winners. (George was unable to attend. His award was accepted by his brother, Socrates.)

Fern Senior ’97 remarks to the 2023 graduating class:

East Woods holds a very special place in my heart and has probably had the biggest impact on my life decisions outside of my parents. I remember receiving a request to give to the East Woods annual fund the year after I graduated. I called my mom and said “can you believe they’re already asking me for money? I don’t even have a job yet!” And she said “well Fern, if you don’t start giving to the things that are important to you now then you never will.” I got off the phone with her and immediately wrote a check (because people still wrote checks when I was 15). It was probably only for $25 but it was about making a commitment, taking action, and giving back to something that had given so much to me. It was also a reminder not to forget the lessons instilled in me by my teachers and through the mission of the school. I’ve always kept that with me and credit it for my involvement in volunteer work and goodwill over the years. This school has a heartbeat that sets it apart from so many others. It’s hard to put into words exactly what makes this place so special. I’ve been trying to

do just that ever since I joined the marketing committee, and we still haven’t quite nailed it! But I think some things are so uniquely special that they’re almost impossible to put into words. Being at East Woods now, as a parent, evokes feelings of nostalgia, reminds me of the bonds and friendships from here that I still have and cherish today, and fills me with gratitude that my children are having their own version of that special experience. Today as you graduate, I encourage you to reflect on your time here. Think about your friendships, teachers, experiences, values you gained and what they mean to you. Hold onto them as you move into your next chapter and let them help guide you as your life continues to unfold.

George Kakoulides ’90 remarks to the 2023 graduating class:

If there is anything East Woods has taught me and hopefully has taught you, is that it is okay not to feel comfortable. It’s okay not to fit in and it’s okay not to want to be there all the time. For me, one of the uncomfortable moments came in the seventh grade when the ice hockey team needed a goalie and I volunteered to take that position. Up until that point I was a soccer player. My father had played soccer professionally and taught me the love of the game. Ice hockey was not part of my DNA.

Putting on the heavy hockey goalie equipment with those monster shin pads and oversized hockey stick in the freezing cold and trying to stop a fast-moving puck was uncomfortable, to say the least. But I wanted to be good so I hustled and worked hard at it. We didn’t always win, but every time I went out and played that position was a victory. Today, I sometimes stand for hours in an operating room in order to remove a brain tumor or fix a fractured spine. The experience I had learning to play goalie at East Woods, standing there out in the cold, taught me how to be uncomfortable and how to stay in it for some greater good…As a student at East Woods, I often felt uncomfortable and you should too, that’s okay, but don’t run from it. Use it as an inspiration to achieve something greater. Graduates of East Woods, your time is now.

2024

In 2024, East Woods proudly awarded Augusta (Gussy) Reese Donohue ’85 and H. Carter Hilliard ’97 with the James E. Gay Alumni/ ae Award. After East Woods, Gussy went to The Madeira School in Virginia and then to Trinity College in Connecticut. Gussy is currently quite involved in community service, particularly in the areas of conservation, horticulture, and environmental preservation. She is the current President of the North Country Garden Club

and on the Executive Board of the North Shore Land Alliance. As President of the North Country Garden Club, Gussy leads its initiatives in conservation of natural resources, the well-being of gardens and green spaces, and horticulture throughout the community.

Carter went to Salisbury School in Connecticut and spent summers in the Rockies where he enjoyed fly fishing, hiking, hunting, camping and mountaineering. After Salisbury, Carter took a gap year spending time in Jackson, Wyoming where he worked in a mechanic shop, lived on a Biodynamic Farm in England and then off to Australia to intern at the National Australia Bank in Melbourne. He worked in commercial real estate sales and leasing and in 2009 founded Hilliard Estate and Land Management (HELM). HELM is a complex business that encompasses land management and environmental restoration and preservation. A few of his projects include custom farming, Wildlife habitat development, stream restoration, as well as many other facets of land management.

This year, East Woods School is honored to celebrate two alumni who are both committed to environmental sustainability and preservation. Thank you Gussy and Carter for being wonderful examples of East Woods commitment to service and good character.

Augusta (Gussy) Reese Donohue ’85 remarks to the 2024 graduating class: East Woods is a special place both in terms of

its education and the beautiful environment surrounding it. This property played a big role in my love of nature and open spaces. In fact, the field across the street was preserved by the North Shore Land Alliance, one of the organizations that I am very passionate about. As you reflect upon your experiences here, I urge you to remember how East Woods has always promoted the power and impact of community service. Community service is the heartbeat of society, the thread that binds us together. It’s not just about giving back, it’s about investing in the collective well-being of our communities. Whether it’s mentoring the youth, feeding the hungry, or cleaning up our neighborhoods, every act of service ripples outward, creating positive change far beyond what we can imagine. But community service is not just a one-time event or a check mark on a to-do list, it’s a commitment; a commitment to be present, to be engaged, and to make a difference every single day. So today as we gather to celebrate our graduates, let us recommit ourselves to the values of community service. Let us pledge to be the change we wish to see in the world, to lift up those in need and to build a brighter future for generations to come.

H. Carter Hilliard ’97 remarks to the 2024 graduating class:

When I thought of what to tell you all, I just wanted to say that I did not follow the same path of going to New York, being a banker, and working in finance. I drive tractors, I plant native grasses that Gussy (Gussy Reese Donohue) prescribes, I burn fields, and I love it, and I

spend time outside. I think it’s important to be comfortable following what you love to do and having a commitment to something that maybe others don’t think is the direction you should go. I’ve had the opportunity to bring my children’s school out to our farm to teach them about

land management and planting. I echo what Gussy says about continued community service and doing things for others. I urge you to leave every place a little bit better than you found it. Congratulations to the Class of 2024.

The George and Abby O’Neill Outstanding Faculty Award

George and Abby O’Neill sent six children through East Woods School. George served on the Board of Trustees and was President of the Board from 1959 through 1962. Abby and George were tireless volunteers who always took a deep personal interest in the school and the students. Their family, all these years later, continues to support East Woods and to care deeply about our students.

The George and Abby O’Neil Outstanding Faculty Award will be given each year in recognition of a teacher who has demonstrated unwavering dedication to East Woods School and its students. A plaque with his wording is displayed in the school to remind us of all the qualities of fine teaching and community participation. The one-time recipient is chosen by the Head of School and the Assistant Head of School, who considers teachers for their

high academic standards, their academic and emotional support of students, their professionalism, and their visibility and participation in the life of the school community beyond the classroom.

East Woods School is deeply grateful to all of its alumni for their continued commitment and support. You reflect the very best of East Woods!

Alumni News And Notes

Catching Up With Your Classmates

Alumni of East Woods School play a vital role in our history, traditions, and excellence. The Board of Trustees, Head of School, administration, faculty, and staff highly value and appreciate the ongoing relationship of the school with its graduates.

OUR ABILITY TO REMAIN CONNECTED WITH EAST WOODS ALUMNI IS GREATLY FACILITATED BY LIFELONG FRIENDSHIPS THAT WERE BORN WITHIN THE SCHOOL WALLS AND ON ITS FIELDS.

1955

Joy Sperry Emery ’55. Hi Everyone! I am still involved in the Albany Symphony and a Philanthropic Educational organization called P.E.O. Saratoga Springs in Upstate New York has a wonderful cultural atmosphere, and I look forward to all the music that takes place during the Spring and Summer. Really, the whole Capital District is very special that way. I love my gardens, and the Saratoga Lake, which I overlook.

1957

Edward Cox ’57. In 2004 I remarried to an English widow I had met as singles on a culture history trip to Sicily, retired from a demanding neurosurgical practice, and moved to a foreign country, all simultaneously! We live in her house in central London, and enjoy frequent trips all over the United Kingdom and Europe.

1958

Kathleen Salkaln (Paul Salkaln ’58 deceased) found the June 1954 East Woods Echo among her late husband’s papers. Kathleen

kindly sent the Echo to us – and in quite good condition! Thank you Kathleen.

‘STUDIUM ET VOLUNTAS’

This year, the East Woods Echo, through the combined efforts of the students, the faculty, and Mr. Salisbury, the art teacher, have created a shield to be put on the paper, and on the diplomas of the graduates.

The shield, which appears on the front page of the paper, came about through the thought and work of many, and after many months it finally was completed. For several weeks, at art, the students made shields which Mr. Salsisbury and the other faculty members looked at carefully, and finaly the best ones were selected and their ideas were combined.

The book, which appears on the upper left corner, signifies the book of knowledge. The lamp, which is on the lower right corner, signifies light, or the lamp of knowledge. Written in Latin, is an inscription on the bottom of the shield, which says “Studium et Voluntas,” “Study and Will.”

1959

Robert B. Mackay ’59. Bob writes, “It was worse than the Dodgers moving to Los Angeles when at the end of our third grade year at East Woods School, in 1953, my best friend John Jay Osborn moved to San Francisco. Years passed as we lost track of each other, but neither of us ever forgot our intense friendship. Anna, who also went to East Woods, reminds me that I never pass the old Osborn place, at the top of Cold Spring Hill, without remembering.

In the 1970s, I would see John’s name again, because as a student at Harvard Law, he wrote a best selling novel, “The Paper Chase,” which also became a film in which John Houseman portrayed the imperious Professor Kingsfield. Author of other novels and scripts, John also taught law, retiring from the University of San Francisco School of Law in 2018.

Not long ago, another East Woods classmate, Carolyn DuBois, who is President of New York Marble Cemetery had happened to be in contact with Californian who had ancestors interred there. She asked if he was by chance the same John Osborn who had gone to East Woods? He asked her, “Do you know how I can get in touch with Bob MacKay?”

On receiving his contact information, I emailed him one Sunday morning; “Hello John? Wow, Wow, Wow!! It has only been 68 years. We have since shared many emails, exchanged books written, and got together in Maine. Friendship knows no bounds.”

John Jay Osborn ’59, Bob MacKay ’59, Anna von Raits MacKay ’68

1960

Caroline S. DuBois ’60. Caroline DuBois has bought an apartment in the Glen Pearsall complex in Glen Cove in order to be closer to her Oyster Bay / Cold Spring Harbor sailing friends.

1961

David Bannard ’61. Fifty three years ago I called Charlie Bartlett, my former 7th and 8th grade teacher and asked him about teaching jobs. Three weeks later, he helped me get my first job teaching at Vincent Smith School. After three years at Vincent Smith, I spent seventeen years at Groton School where I met my wife Gussie. I have spent the last 33 years teaching at Collegiate School in Richmond VA. I retired June 2022.

1963

Margo Davis ’63. Margo was in Florence, Italy last year with her nieces, who are from Italy. They visited Plaza de Santa Croce, in Florence. She was there for an entire month!

1965

Sarita Weekes Beebe ’65. All remains the same, except for an additional grandson (my daughter’s), now two wonderful boys, and my son got married also. Both of my kids live close by, so I’m a very lucky person. Nothing like family!

1966

Janet von Briesen Peña ’66. Hello Classmates, Most of us are now in our early 70s. How amazing is that? I am still in touch with several classmates, and a lifetime of friendship is pretty remarkable. There were quite a few highlights in a year that seemed long and uneventful but turned out not to be: two visits to Princeton to see family; a few days in NYC which included seeing The Lehman Trilogy and a walk around Little Island; a trip

to Telluride with two Dallas friends; and two weddings for a friend’s daughter in Boston, and a family wedding in Acapulco. We spend a lot of time in Houston to see our granddaughter when she is with her dad, and also Ernesto’s sister who has of late had several health issues. We continue to be active in our community HOA, and I have taken up gardening more by default than choice. After last year’s deep freezes, nothing was left and I decided to see what I could do. To my great surprise, I’m finding I rather like it!

Lynn Handy Ryan ’69. Lynn generously sent a number of East Wood Echo newsletters to the school from the late 1960s. We found the award listing from her graduating class only to discover that Lynn and classmate Peter Lindsay received the Drama Prize for Acting! She also donated her original script from the school play, L’Enchanteur D’Oz (Wizard of Oz) – all spoken in French! Thank you, Lynn!

Doug Arthur ’69. Doug and Lisa Arthur continue to go to East Woods almost every school

day dropping their grandson, Gavin, off in the morning and picking him up at close. Gavin, who started at EWS in Pre-Nursery, is looking forward to Third Grade in the fall. Doug and Lisa continue to reside in Cold Spring Harbor and Doug is a Managing Director at Huber Research Partners in Greenwich, Ct.

Steven Bartlett ’73. Steve wonderfully reminisced about his time growing up in the Bartlett House on campus. Working on the school grounds and inside the building (the Old Gym floor) and the secret hiding spaces in the upper room of the house, which was the playroom for him and his brother. His dad began at East Woods as a History teacher and coaching football (6 man) and his mother in pre-school. Steve played football, basketball, and lacrosse (Billy Porter wanted to play lacrosse so Steve did too). He went to Brooks School after East Woods

Our kids, Will and Annie are loving living in Burlington, VT and New York City, respectively, and we are all doing well. I am now a partner at Essex Partners, an outplacement firm in Boston providing career consulting services to senior executives. I’ve been a career coach for more than 10 years now and loving it. I co-authored a book called Finding a Job That Loves You Back, which overlays the entire job search process with negotiation thinking and practice.

Louise Parsons Parry ’87. Hello classmates! May this find you and your extended family members doing well. I am a school counselor for grades 5-8 in the Washington DC area and I get very nostalgic thinking about my East Woods memories that began in 4th grade. My adolescent kids roll their eyes when I break out into Bye Bye Birdie songs and recount school events like dances in the gym, Canteen Nights and the Parsons family favorite...Bungle Night! May there be similar community connection, music and creative fun in your years ahead.

Alexandria Behrens (Phillips) ’05. Hello! My husband, Blake and son, Fitzgerald, and I, moved back to Long Island. We are so excited to be back where I grew up and are currently living in Huntington.

Hailey Feldman ’05. Greetings from West Palm Beach. My passion for performance was sparked while attending East Woods. I remember every play, musical, talent show, public speaking opportunity, and concert. With special trips planned by Mr. Huneke to Broadway, it is no wonder I am so in love with the arts! I have been performing at the Palm Beach Institute for the Entertainment Arts this year in two plays. The stage is my happy place and I am having a blast! East Woods nurtured this confidence in me as an early childhood student. I continue to benefit from my East Woods education in my 30s! In other news - I have seen some EWS alumni in Palm Beach which is always a treat. My brother, Mack Feldman, is hard at work in St. Petersburg, FL working for my dad in commercial real estate. I have visited Tamara Greenman on Nantucket and have seen Mr. Huneke and Elisabeth Schwartzberg too.

Reception for Alumni and Past Parents

East Woods alumni and past parents gathered once again at the New York Yacht Club in Manhattan for cocktails and conversation. What has become a bi-annual autumn event, is a wonderful way to stay connected with friends from East Woods. In the beautiful Model Room setting of the NYYC, guests heard an update from Head of School, Mrs. Laura Kang, and remarks made by Alumni Association President, Christie Luce McNicol, Class of 1971. All are welcome to this year’s NYYC event on October 8 from 6 to 9 PM. Look for the invitation in your email.

Annual Report of Giving 2021-2024

Letter From the Head of School

July 2024

Dear East Woods School Community,

During summer vacations, I take a couple of weeks to enjoy my favorite pastimes. They include hiking, fly fishing, and kayaking. These are often in beautiful settings, offering time for reflection and time to be grateful for all that life has given me.

Over these past seven years, I can say that my experience at East Woods School has been incredibly satisfying even with the challenging environment that we all lived through.

When I try to attribute the satisfaction, I think about the East Woods setting, its campus, buildings, and location on the beautiful North Shore of Long Island. I also think about my fellow administrators, our faculty and staff and their dedication to the school’s mission and to our children. And last but not least, I think about you, our East Woods School community comprised of parents, alumni, past parents, grandparents, faculty and staff, and friends.

East Woods School engenders strong ties with one another and the community as a whole. I believe it is the school’s mission, values, and strong traditions that fosters the generous care and giving demonstrated by the members of our community.

On these following pages, you will see the names of many individuals who have given of their resources for the betterment of the school’s educational experience for our students. This too is a tradition at East Woods: extraordinary generosity in spirit and resources by our community members. It is this generosity that led to the successful founding of the school and has continued to support it for generations.

I give you my heartfelt gratitude for all you do for the school both for these present days and for the days in years to come. East Woods School is what it is because of you. For that, I am so grateful.

With all good wishes and thanks.

Sincerely,

For inquiries about making a planned gift to East Woods School, consult your attorney or financial advisor.

Planned Giving

Designating East Woods School in one’s estate is a wonderful way to support the long-term mission of the school.

In recent years, East Woods has been the grateful beneficiary of meaningful estate gifts. Planned gifts not only support the school, but can also offer individual tax savings, retirement income, and a reduction in estate taxes. Planned gifts can also provide you or a loved one with a lifetime income, offering the flexibility to increase payments or defer income for retirement planning.

East Woods School Legacy Society is a society of benefactors who have already named East Woods as a beneficiary in their estate plans. If you have already done so, please notify Sean Collins in the Development Office at scollins@eastwoods.org. If you have not, we encourage you to consider leaving a legacy to East Woods by including the school in your estate plans.

Planned gifts include: BEQUESTS

A straightforward method to offer crucial support for the school’s future and lower estate taxes is by including East Woods School in your Will. You can designate either a percentage of your estate or a specific dollar amount.

CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITIES

Gift annuities offer a fixed income for life along with attractive tax benefits. At the conclusion of the contract a significant gift is directed to East Woods School.

CHARITABLE REMAINDER TRUSTS

A Charitable Remainder Trust provides significant tax advantages, ensures lifetime income for the donor and/or other beneficiaries, and subsequently transfers the remaining trust assets to East Woods School.

CHARITABLE LEAD TRUSTS

A Charitable Lead Trust makes payments to the school for a specific period of time, and subsequently transfers the remaining assets to other beneficiaries.

LIFE INSURANCE

Life insurance gifts offer lasting and secure support for East Woods while providing you with an income tax deduction. Making the school the owner of a paid-up policy grants you an income tax deduction for its value. Alternatively, naming the school as a beneficiary and retaining ownership results in an estate tax deduction for the death benefit paid to the school.

RETIREMENT ASSETS

A simple way to make an estate gift to East Woods, is to name the school as a beneficiary of retirement assets. This can be either a percent of assets or a specific dollar amount. It’s as simple as filling out a beneficiary form.
