Q&A

The Person Behind The Business Q&A Name and Business: Valentin Getov Carpet Sun Limited

What did you do previously? I studied Engineering technology at university in Bulgaria.

Where do you live? Originally from Plovdiv in Bulgaria and at the moment I live in Glenrothes. Athough I hope to move to the East Neuk soon.

What’s the best bit about your job? The best bit with Carpet Sun is meeting all the different types of people.

When did you come to Scotland? 16 years ago, looking for some adventure, I came to Scotland to work in the fields for a summer berry picking. From summer berry picker to business owner; what have you been up to in between? My first summer in the fields was an eye opener. The fields suited me as it was very straightforward, the harder you work-the more you get paid. I can work hard. Realising the opportunities in Fife, I stayed and worked as a taxi driver and then combined working in the fields during the day and driving taxis at night. After a couple of years this allowed me to buy my first buy to let property. You became a landlord within just a few years arriving here? Yes, but continued to work both in the fields, taxis and do takeaway deliveries-something I still do a few nights per week even now! However, I continued building my property portfolio to the point where I could begin to look at owning and running my own small business. Now after a couple of years searching, I’m the very proud owner of Carpet Sun Limited in Anstruther. What are your plans and hopes for the future? My plans are for Carpet Sun to remain an independent alternative to the major carpet and interior retailers in Fife. Our core offering and first-class service will never change but I do intend to source new sustainable products where possible. My hopes are that the local community welcomes me by continuing to use Carpet Sun and maybe in 20 years I’ll be considered almost a local.

8

And the worst bit? The weather! What’s your favourite local shop? Lunch box in Anstruther, very handy for my lunch. What’s your favourite local venue? The Bank in Anstruther is great for a meal. What do you like best about St Andrews & The East Neuk? Cleanliness, friendliness and the feeling of community. What’s the best thing that’s happened to you recently? I’ve just returned from my first visit to Skye. What a wonderful place and I’m looking forward to see more of Scotland. What’s your favourite one liner? I like it when Scots people tell me I’m ‘sharp as a tack’ I didn’t know what it meant at first but now I think it’s a compliment Favourite drink? Lucozade-it aids recovery. Favourite food? My mums homemade Bulgarian Goulash. Favourite Song or Band? Eminem, he is a modern poet. Favourite Sport? Ju Jitsu, I was heavily involved in this when I was young in Plovdiv. Something that not many people will know about you? Any time I’m involved in an accident I have always been unscathed. My friends and family think I have an angel. Something that's on your bucket list? To have children - and a partner!

Gardening

Add Some Vertical Interest By Pippa Greenwood

Whether your garden is large or small, long, wide or a completely uneven shape, you can guarantee that it will benefit from having some height added to it – and what better way to do this than by erecting an arch or arbour? The great thing is that, of course, any vertical structure you install in your garden makes for a new planting opportunity too… So what are the advantages of a bit of vertical structural interest (aside from the plants it can support) and how can you make the very best of them in your garden? Position an arbour so that it overlooks a good view or particularly attractive part of the garden and you instantly create a fabulous place to sit and relax. You can also use an arch or even an arbour as a means of dividing your garden into one or more rooms. This age-old designer’s trick can make your garden seem a lot larger and more interesting.

the first one you see; shop around and remember that if you clothe them with climbers, you are adding to their appeal. Some plants look great but others have another secret ingredient: scented climbers, like some of the rambling or climbing roses, or honeysuckle or jasmine, can totally transform the whole garden as their perfume wafts out for you to enjoy. If an arbour is situated in a sunny spot and you have fairly free-draining soil, why not plant an area around it with lavenders? Then you can enjoy both the way it looks and the perfume and aromatic leaves as you sit and relax after a stressful day. In sunny positions, thymes or camomile can be used to great effect on the approach to your archway or arbour – when your feet gently crush the thyme or camomile lawn, a fantastic aroma will be released.

Chosen carefully, arches and arbours themArches and arbours are available in a wide selves are good looking and can be a feature range of materials, but by far the most in their own right, so don’t necessarily go for popular are those made from wood or metal.

To a large extent it is a case of shopping around to find something that suits your garden style, the purpose you have in mind for it and, of course, your budget. I am a great fan of wood or metal because I find that they both fit in well with the sort of gardening style I like and, of course, you can always use one of the numerous and readily available wood stains or paints to transform it from its natural subtly coloured state to a bright blue, rich red or pretty well any colour you fancy! Although it is possible to construct an arch or an arbour from scratch yourself, you will be amazed at the range of ready-made arbours and kits for both arches and arbours that are now available. If you choose wood, do ensure that it is a wood which is either naturally going to resist decay – western red cedar or a hardwood such as oak would be my first choice, with Douglas fir or larch a close sec-

ond. Alternatively you can choose a softwood which has been tanalised or pressuretreated with a wood preservative, which will usually be somewhat cheaper. By choosing a wooden arch, perhaps with a rounded top and trellis up the sides, you ensure a really good planting space, and this somewhat more rustic look fits in well with a particularly informal garden. Many of these are also relatively inexpensive and easy to install. To find out just what’s available, it is well worth paying a visit to a local garden centre or taking a look at mail-order products from the numerous arch and arbour websites, which make window shopping even easier!

Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com and you’ll find some great gardening items: Nemaslug, ladybirds and other great natural pest controls, stylish cloches, practical and pretty plant supports, the fantastic SpeedHoe, gardening tools, planters, Grower Frames, signed books and more!

Online ticket sales will be available until Saturday 27 July. Tickets can also be purchased daily, except Sunday, by telephone on 0333 666 3366. Crail Festival can be contacted on 01333 451585, please leave a message. The range of children's activities at every Crail Festival is unsurpassed. The Afternoon at the Movies – 'Sing-Along with The Greatest Showman'- will provide relaxation and fun on the first afternoon. The ever popular workshops include Drama, Art, Calling All Wizards, Krafty Kids, and Story Telling. All those who are in any way competitive will relish taking part in the Sandcastle, Crabbing, Rock Stacking, and Bake Off competitions and the Scavenger Hunt. Archery and Falconry, in response to popular demand, feature again. Fun and games too for all who participate in the Junior Golf Skills, Rock Pool Guddle, Fossil Hunt, and Zoolab. Memorable music is rightly associated with Crail Festival and the musical events this year are keenly anticipated. The Blueswater, after last year's superb performance, need no introduction. Blazin' Fiddles, a group of the hottest fiddle players mixed with piano and guitar, will bring the best traditional music to Crail. Cat Loud's cabaret style

18

with forthright stage banter must not be missed. Ali Affleck and The Copper Cats will perform sensational New Orleans Jazz and Blues. The Scottish folk scene is vibrant so the Crail Folk Club Concert with Siobhan Miller, 3 times Scottish Singer of the year, Perthshire folk royalty Jim Malcolm and Johnny Izatt will be an outstanding evening. Michael Christian Durrant, a hugely talented, accomplished classical guitarist, makes a very welcome return, this time to the Community Hall. Our closing headline act will be the fabulous Something Blue Live Band who will play everything from 60s soul classics right up to modern R and B hits. A chance to dance the night away until the later time of 11.30pm. The inimitable Les Barker, a very funny man, always a favourite at Crail, will entertain with his comedic poetry and very topical parodies of popular songs. Les has a magical, innocent sense of the ridiculous so we can only wonder how he will deal with Brexit. Live theatre is back with Illyria's outdoor performance of 'The Tempest' in the atmospheric setting of the Castle Grounds. This will almost certainly be 'The Tempest' with a difference! Bring warm clothing in case it is a chilly night. Hardy annuals the Festival Quiz, Street Market, Adult Ceramic Workshop, Open Gardens and the Art and Crafts Exhibition will add to the enjoyment of many. www.Crailfestival.com, our new style and updated, user friendly website contains everything you need to know about the events and ticketing. Incredibly realistic, these faux Silver Saltmarsh stems look beautiful simply placed in bottles or grouped together in a vase. £9, LillianDaph.

Printed on highquality white paper with a slender black frame, this set of two anatomical plant prints will add a touch of botanical style. £175, Cox & Cox.

• Shades of green are very on-trend and provide a lovely background for displays of plants. They are easy to live with and combine wonderfully with whites and off-whites, as well as natural materials such as timber, stone and linen. • Botanical-themed wallpaper and fabrics can be beautiful but quite overwhelming. If you prefer to keep the look relatively subtle, choose small-scale or delicate prints in shades of green and neutrals for background interest. • To make an impact with a display of real botanicals, choose large plants and position in strategic places, as you would a sculpture. Alternatively, place collections of smaller plants together in rows or groups, allowing for contrasts in shapes, colour and texture. Don’t forget to pop trailing plants on a high shelf to create a ‘living wall’ effect. Coordinate pots or planters for a sense of overall cohesion. • Enhance your walls with botanical works of art. Traditional school-style posters are very on trend right now, as are anatomical botanical drawings, eighteenth century-style paintings (used as bold, whole-wall murals) and graphic modern prints.

These patterned ceramic pots are modelled on the outer leaves of an artichoke and finished with an aqua glaze. Artichoke pots, £8 and £15, Garden Trading.

Pets Healthy Summer Rabbits

Although rabbits are generally viewed as lowerprofile pets when compared with cats and dogs, they have specific needs and require lots of care and attention to make sure they thrive. With this in mind, the heat of summer introduces the risk of your rabbit suffering two particularly nasty and potentially fatal diseases. Fly strike Fly strike is a serious condition that affects rabbits in the warmer months. Flies lay their eggs close to your rabbit’s back end, and within a couple of

hours the eggs hatch into maggots that feed on the rabbit. The sheer speed of fly strike means you need to be alert, and check twice a day that your rabbit is clean. It’s also advisable to disinfect the hutch at least weekly, and not to overfeed them. If your rabbit lives outside, you can also protect them from fly strike to some extent by fixing mosquito netting around their hutch. Myxomatosis Myxomatosis is usually fatal for rabbits, and is caused by fly, flea, tick, or mosquito bites. It can also be carried between rabbits on infected bedding and straw. Myxomatosis is a highly infectious virus that causes the mucous membranes around the eyes to swell, but there is a vaccine that typically lasts for 12 months. The vaccine doesn’t remove the risk of this awful disease entirely, but if your vaccinated rabbit is infected by the virus it can increase its chances of survival if treatment is also administered as an emergency. www.vet4life.co.uk/flystrike www.kingsteigntonvetgroup.co.uk/blog/summerrisks-to-rabbits.shtml

Is she the only one who can save the babies, or is she the one who’s putting them in danger? A chilling page-turner that keeps you guessing. Vegan One Pound Meals – Miguel Barclay This book proves that vegan food can be as delicious, easy and inexpensive as it is healthy. There are twists on classic dishes, such as ‘artichoke paella’, ‘cashew pesto pasta’ and ‘tomato tarte tatin’, along with plenty of original dishes, such as ‘kimchi tacos’ and ‘sticky aubergine bao’. Most only use a handful of ingredients and all work out at around £1 per portion. Recipes are easy to follow and each is accompanied by a mouth-watering image. The Tattooist of Auschwitz – Heather Morris If you haven’t yet read the biography of Lale Sokolov, summer could be the perfect time as you’ll want the time to digest this book in peace. Lale was imprisoned in Auschwitz from 1942 and put to work tattooing the other prisoners. During his time at Auschwitz, Lale witnessed both the brutality of the human race, and its appetite for

kindness, self-sacrifice and hope. While The Tattooist of Auschwitz is at times harrowing, it is also a love story. A must-read. The Perfect Wife – JP Delaney Abbie wakes in a hospital bed to discover everything she thinks she knows to be true is wrong. She’s an AI who’s been created by her tech genius husband using memories of the real Abbie, who died five years before. As she struggles to come to terms with her life, Abbie starts to question everything she’s been told. But when she has no rights, who can she trust? Suspense, twists and moral quandaries abound in this skilful thriller. Cleaning the Gold – Karin Slaughter and Lee Child Looking for a quick read? This collaboration between bestselling writers Karin Slaughter and Lee Child is just 80 pages long. It brings together two of their best-known characters – Jack Reacher and Will Trent. Will is undercover investigating Jack when they realise there are bigger fish to fry. A perfect slice of fast-paced action to enjoy while you’re waiting for your flight. The Farm – Joanne Ramos Golden Oaks farm doesn’t grow tomatoes, wheat or potatoes. It grows babies. The surrogate mothers (Hosts) are paid to incubate their rich clients’ embryos. While at Golden Oaks, they have to adhere to strict rules, from giving up their phones to following a diet. The Farm is told from the viewpoint of four women: Jane and Reagan are two of the hosts, while Mae is the brains behind the lucrative business. Ate is Jane’s cousin. The Farm is thought-provoking and topical, but above all it’s a fantastic page-tuner of a story.

Books by bike a hit at Pittenweem library Libraries lend books – we all know that: you go in, register as a member, choose a book from the shelves and take it away to read at home over the next three weeks or so, before bringing it back and doing the same again. But in Pittenweem the library can come to you. Their Books on Wheels service makes the whole stock of the library accessible to anyone finding themselves housebound for whatever reason. The service has expanded significantly since it was launched a year

Requested titles are delivered by bicycle at an arranged time and may be kept for an extended period if necessary. The service is absolutely free, as is nearly everything else at Pittenweem Community Library & Information Centre. In the two years since it reopened as a volunteer-run resource the library has attracted more than 350 members of all ages who can access a growing number of books. Many of them are brand new editions acquired recently and include the whole of the centenary edition of the novels by Edinburgh-born Dame Muriel Spark.

Astana - Kazakhstan in Central Asia By Solange Hando

In 1998, barely seven years after independence, a new capital rose in Kazakhstan in the middle of the steppes on the banks of the Ishim River. Planned by the Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa, it grew into a futuristic dream, replacing Almaty, the former capital enclosed by mountains with little room for expansion and prone to natural disasters. Today, with over one million people sharing 100 nationalities, Astana is the northernmost capital in Asia and the second coldest in the world. Although much of the old town still spreads along the right bank, the new capital across the water dazzles everyone with innovative architecture, wide avenues and open spaces and parks.

32

Day or night, the central Nurzhol Boulevard is a wonderful place for a stroll, a wide traffic-free oasis full of greenery, fountains and flowers and traditional sculptures, here a shaman, there a dancer or a nomad. Stretching for over two kilometres towards the riverside presidential headquarters, it is dominated by the Bayterek Tower, the top attraction in Astana. It’s easy to see why: rising to 97 metres, this lofty monument is crowned by a 300 tonne glass ball where colours change according to the natural light. Bayterek, they say, is a ‘tree of life’, clutching an ‘egg’ between its branches to ensure a peaceful and prosperous future. It is truly

enticing and up on the top, inspired no doubt by the wonderful views, many visitors make a wish, eyes closed as they place their hand in the president’s golden print. Away from the river, the boulevard opens onto a vast circular space leading to fine outdoor restaurants and flower shops and an archway framing the Khan Shatyr centre, an indoor place for souvenir and other stores, as well as family amusements – including a beach covered with sand from the Maldives. But most exciting is the actual building, moulded like a giant steel yurt, gleaming white, slightly topsy-turvy, and one of Norman Foster’s landmarks. Bold and dynamic, the new Astana also pays tribute to its roots, be it in the museums, the stark blue Palace of Independence or the Central Concert Hall, where the main room is shaped like a dombyra

lute, Kazakhstan’s national instrument. Sculptures of Samruk, the mythical bird, pop up here and there to protect the country. In 1999, UNESCO declared Astana a ‘City of Peace’, a theme upheld in the newlyerected Peace Wall, inscribed with the word ‘peace’ in 51 languages, and the glass pyramid, known as the Palace of Peace and Reconciliation. There a stained glass painting displays 130 doves symbolising cultural and religious tolerance. Islam is the main religion, open and relaxed for most followers, and with its white minarets and domes, the iconic Hazrat Sultan mosque claims the largest complex of its kind in Central Asia. Inaugurated in 2012, it was named after a 12th century poet and mystic, linking past and present in one of the youngest capitals in the world.

Spotlight On... The Little Gallery - Pittenweem Take a wander along the high street in Pittenweem and you’ll soon find The Little Gallery tucked away along a side lane, on the sea side of the street. You’ll spot the blue signs that lead you to the front door. The owner, Ursula Ditchburn arrived in Pittenweem in 1986, the property was originally a holiday house and opened as The Little Gallery two years later. Inside you’ll find a treasure trove of antiques, paintings & rustica. With a variety of both old and vintage items you’ll find tables and cabinets full of great and affordable finds, especially the hand-painted rustica pieces which are extremely popular with visitors to The Little Gallery.

During her time in Switzerland Ursula taught folk art to the local children, you can see these artistic designs, inspired by her Swiss heritage on many of the different wooden pieces on display in The Little Gallery. The Little Gallery is open Friday to Monday throughout the year and 7 days during the week of the Pittenweem Arts Festival - well worth a visit.

Honda CR-V Hybrid By James Baggot

What is it? Honda’s best-selling CR-V SUV is reliable, practical and well-priced, and the latest model is stylish with a bolder, US-inspired look.

takes 9.0 seconds and top speed is 112mph, but it never feels as quick as those figures suggest. Around town, it will exceed the claimed 53.3mpg fuel economy, but on motorways and at higher speeds fuel economy drops below 40mpg – disappointing for a model that claims to be so efficient.

All models also benefit from front and rear LED lights to give the CR-V plenty of presence. What’s it like inside? Quality is a big improvement, with plenty of soft-touch materials, as well as a clean, clutter-free layout, and wood trim. The absence of a transmission tunnel allows for a spacious centre console, while a traditional gearstick is replaced by buttons. The seven-inch touchscreen is loaded with features but can be difficult to operate. For practicality, the CR-V excels, even as the Hybrid. There’s 491 litres of load space, while the rear seats offer plenty of legroom and headroom for adults. What’s the spec like? The entry-level ‘S’ specification is a little disappointing, with satellite navigation and parking sensors missing. However, our highspec SR grade car came with leather upholstery, keyless start and entry, heated

front seats and ambient interior lighting. The Hybrid costs over £2,000 more than the petrol model, a significant chunk of money considering that running costs aren’t exactly revolutionary. Prices start from £30,130 for the Hybrid, with our test car costing £34,470 – putting it in a similar ballpark to Toyota’s RAV4. Verdict The CR-V Hybrid is the pick of Honda SUV’s line-up, and is ideal for quiet and efficient town driving. Honda should be admired for pushing ahead with electrification and abandoning diesel in its CR-V – especially as the SUV sector is still dominated by diesel-powered models. However, for long-distance efficiency, diesels still make sense, but for urban drivers wanting a stylish and practical SUV, the CRV Hybrid could be ideal.

Are You Losing Your Mind? By Marla Cilley

Do you ever feel like you must be losing your mind? Someone says to you, “I told you that last week!” or “Don’t you remember?” We can get defensive about comments like this. I know I have. This morning as I was "sleeping in" it hit me what the problem is. It is sensory overload and our database has failed to file the information in the proper place. Can you tell that I am learning to speak geek? Let’s think about this overload for a second. When I am sitting at home in my chair with my computer on my lap, four dogs, a television on with a ticker tape scrolling across the bottom or music playing, a house phone, a cell phone, my assistant Michele, my ipod, text messaging and instant messaging, emails coming in, the doorbell ringing and my sweet darling somewhere in the house. It is a miracle that I can do anything much less remember something that is tossed into this chaotic mix. We are so smug at believing that the ability to multitask is a virtue. All it really does is divide our attention, take us longer to accomplish anything and make us feel frazzled. The only thing that it does is make us look busy. Just because we look as if we are doing something doesn’t mean we are accomplishing anything. This is called busy work. It's no wonder why we can’t remember anything. We are not losing our minds! We are multitasking!

movie never has my undivided attention! I watch with my computer on my lap! In the evening I don’t usually make business calls but my instant messenger is always up and I am checking emails. This is just the physical things I am doing with my hands. My mind is a million other places; processing ideas for essays and what is going to happen tomorrow. So how do we stop this sensory overload? We have to pull the plugs! Let’s practice turning off and tuning in. This is not going to be easy. I know myself too well but I also know the satisfaction that comes from being able to accomplish something. This is how I wrote my first book. I had made myself a strict routine for the morning. I know my mornings are my most productive time as long as I am not pulled in several directions at once. My routine started with getting dressed to lace up shoes, making my bed, swishing and swiping the bathroom, emptying the dishwasher, feather dusting, a quick dust mop of the floors and then eating my breakfast with a strong cup of coffee. This is my normal morning routine.

My sweet darling laughs and tells me that I My goal was to write ten pages or three must have movie amnesia. This morning I have figured out why I don’t remember mov- hours whichever came first. To accomplish ies that we watch at home. It is because the this goal I had some rules for myself.

Why Doctors Are Prescribing Mindfulness By Alison Runham - www.alison.runham.co.uk

Mindfulness has gone from buzzword to a therapy increasingly prescribed by doctors. So what’s it all about?

Noticing the everyday and trying something new: notice the details of what’s going on around you and try a different seat or going somewhere new for lunch to see things in a new way. Watching and naming your thoughts and feelings: “Mindfulness isn’t about making these thoughts go away, but rather about seeing them as mental events,” says Dr Williams. “Imagine standing at a bus station and seeing ‘thought buses’ coming and going without having to get on them and be taken away. This can be very hard at first, but with gentle persistence it is possible.”
