The Edition

Welcome to the Easter 2018 issue of The Edition - St Andrews & The East Neuk Local Community Magazine.

I love this time of year when you can look forward to the clocks going forward and the start of the longer days. I once managed to get to 3pm on the Sunday before realising the time had changed. So just as a reminder it’s the 25th March that the clocks change. Over the next few months there’s lots happening with a number of Beer Fairs & Food Festivals taking place. If you happen to over indulge there you can put things right by taking part in the Charity Coastal Walk or the Chariots of Fire 5k Run. If you’d rather take to the water look out for the Anstruther Rowing Regatta and the Dreel Burn Duck Race. Or take a seat at The Guizards performance of “’Allo ‘Allo” at The Byre or try the Faulty Towers Dining Experience at The Old Course Hotel, and enjoy a few laughs in the company of Basil, Sybil & Manuel. These events & more are listed on p45. Until next time….

Banana & Walnut Loaf

Makes 10 Slices ~ Ready in 1 hour 45 Minutes

If you have overripe bananas in the fruit bowl then don’t bin them – just whizz up this delicious moist loaf cake instead. It will keep for up to 5 days wrapped in greaseproof paper or foil and stored in an airtight tin.

1.

Preheat the oven to 170C, Fan 150C, Gas 3. Grease and line the base and the two long sides of a 900g loaf tin with baking paper.

2.

Place the butter, sugar, flour, spice, baking powder and eggs in a large bowl and beat with an electric whisk until thoroughly combined - this will take about 4-5 minutes. Fold in the walnuts and mashed bananas.

3.

Spoon the mixture into the prepared tin and level the surface. Bake for 1hour to 1 hour 15 minutes until risen and golden and a skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean.

4.

Leave to cool in the tin for 10 minutes then turn out onto a cooling rack and cool completely. Dust thickly with icing sugar.

French Ardennes, Meuse valley, Monthermé Montherme©D.Truillard

The French Ardennes By Solange Hondo

In north-eastern France, the Regional Nature Park of the Ardennes rises towards the Belgian border, festooned in hills and vales, fast-flowing rivers, dramatic rocks, lush hedgerows and deep forests home to wild boar and deer. Haunted by ancient legends, laced with trails and glorious views, it is largely undiscovered and a haven for nature lovers, covering 117,000 hectares.

finger of land pointing north and the valleys of the Meuse and its tributary the Semoy.

Tumbling down from the Belgium uplands, the Semoy meanders through verdant countryside on its way to the Nature Park across the border. There, from the village of Hautes-Rivières to the confluence with the Meuse, a 20km long cycle path follows every bend of the river, punctuated by Trekking, cycling, horse riding, kayaking or rocky outcrops and viewpoints such as the sailing on the rivers, there are myriad ways ‘Cross of Hell’, a name which leaves plenty to explore and maybe spot the beavers at to the imagination. visitors, the true icon of the valley is Monthermé, nestling crescent-shaped at the tip of a peninsula, stretching out like a green dragon’s tongue as the river almost closes a perfect loop. The water glistens as blue as the sky and densely wooded hills roll as far as you can see in all shades of green. A path climbs through the forest to a series of precipitous rocks where you can look down on Monthermé and one of the most spectacular river loops in France.

Monthermé comes into its own with a popular festival dedicated to the legends of the Ardennes and the ‘little people’ who hide among the rocks.

Festival over, it is time to ramble along the trails, 47 of them from easy strolls to more demanding climbs, criss-crossing the park all the way to Givet at the northern tip, taking in the star-shaped citadel of Rocroi, the lakes, the laurel forest and the slate route around Fumay. BMW X3: Truly Capable By James Baggot

The wheels are spinning, but the BMW isn’t going anywhere. Every revolution of the alloys acts as a spade, shovelling sand and sinking the new X3 deeper into the huge bloodorange dunes. But this isn’t a seaside resort. 25 miles from civilisation, we are in the Saharan desert and we’ve spent the last hour tackling one of the toughest off-road routes I’ve ever experienced. The fact that only now, just a few feet from our final destination, one of my colleagues has managed to half bury a BMW is a testament to the X3’s abilities. Nestled in a lunar landscape, beneath a carpet of stars so bright they look superimposed on the sky, is our camp. A series of Bedouin tents have popped up between the dunes,

12

rugs laid out across the sand and a sweet smell of mint tea is wafting through the rapidly cooling air. The next day, we set off on our epic drive towards the Atlas Mountains, thrown head first into the madness of Marrakesh. It’s an assault on the senses, and tests defensive driving skills to the limits. It subsides as quickly as it erupted, the roads opening up into out-of-this-world landscapes. Soon we’re crossing the Tizi n Tichka mountain pass, one mighty hairpin after another. Our X30d – with a new 260bhp, 620Nm engine – is by far the pick of the range, and on roads like this, it’s swift and enjoyable. At midday we arrive in Ouarzazate, and the

famous Atlas Film Studios. We drive around the sandy site in our BMWs, entering the gates of Game of Thrones, a huge city set made real by the thousands of extras that are bussed in from the surrounding villages when they’re needed. By dusk we’ve covered nearly 300 miles and have taken in the stunning Anti Atlas Mountains. We filter our way through M’Hamid, the last conurbation before the desert, in a dusty convoy. To the locals we look like aliens, 15 brand new BMWs disappearing off into the darkness. Our camp, not far from the Algerian border, is an hour of off-roading away. It would be great fun, if only we could see where we’re going. Just the lights of the cars in front illuminate the impenetrable darkness. It’s this swamp of blackness that unbalances the rhythm of one of our colleagues when approaching the camp. They fail to give a sand dune the run up it deserves, beaching the BMW in a position that takes seven men and shovels to retrieve it from. The next morning, we’re told today will be tougher than yesterday. Five hours of harsh off-roading will be followed by a dash back across the mountains to the airport.

like it’s riding on a cloud. Back in the Anti-Atlas Mountains, we start to make good progress, giving us time to enjoy the X3’s comfy new interior and smart multimedia system. But 100 miles in, we hear a popping and a hiss, and the now all-too familiar warning chime caused by another tyre losing pressure. This time team the BMW team isn’t close, and with no phone reception we’re left waiting in the searing heat for help to arrive. An hour later, the support car pulls up but now it’s not the tyre that’s causing frowns, but the time. We have 130 miles to go, back across the challenging Atlas Mountains, and even without hold ups it looks like we’ll miss the only flight out of Marrakesh that day. So begins a rush to the airport quite unlike any I’ve experienced before. We head off on a three-hour rally stage. From screeching hairpin bends to blink-and-you’ll-miss-them overtakes, the BMW takes it all in its stride. Through sweat, tears and clenched body parts we hurtle into the Marrakesh airport car park with just minutes to spare. The flight is closing, but we manage to get our boarding passes and dash to the gate.

Warning soon forgotten, we’re quickly back in the groove, drifting the off-roader around sandy corners and clattering over sharp rocks. As the desert eases, we experience the barren, flat, dry river beds of the Ouef Draa, Iriki Lane and Erg Chigaga, all stages of the famous Dakar Rally.

Sat, perspiring, exhausted but elated on the plane, I look across to the newspaper hacks who’ve endured the pan-Moroccan mad dash with me, and we smile. The BMW X3 may have two new tyres, but it’s been returned unscathed and we’re taxiing down the runway just 25 minutes after we arrived at the airport.

As we approach Foum Zguid, on the edge of the desert, our BMW calmly tells us our nearside rear wheel has lost pressure. BMW chaperones soon arrive out of the dust and whip the ruined wheel off, and we once again make our way back on to tarmac – after five hours of bumping and crashing, the X3 feels

All credit to BMW. There aren’t many firms who’d put their cars, or a bunch of journalists, through what we experienced. The X3 has proven it’s a truly capable car, able to transport you and your family on any adventure – and I for one am certainly looking forward to the next one.

Be Happy With A Book Whether you love curling up with a psychological thriller or prefer flicking through a cookbook or need business advice, we’ve got just the book to keep you and your e-reader happy. The History of Bees – Maja Lunde The History of Bees tells the stories of three people, all connected by bees. In 1851, William is attempting to build a revolutionary beehive to bring honour and fame to his family. In 2007, George is struggling to keep the family bee farm going. Almost 100 years later, Tao is enjoying a rare day off from her job hand-pollinating fruit trees, when her son is taken seriously ill. The History of Bees was a surprise international bestseller last year and is ideal for fans of dystopian fiction.

USING RECLAIMED BOARDS The aged patina of reclaimed boards is absolutely beautiful, but such authenticity does not come cheap – do not expect to pay substantially less than for new boards, while common problems include woodworm, ingrained dirt and stains, dents and splits, variations in thickness or colour, broken tongue and groove, and the need to remove or countersink thousands of old rusty nails. If the price seems too good to be true, it probably is. Ask where the wood came from and how it has been stored since it was reclaimed timber that has stood outside for any length of time may be useless, and would certainly need to dry out considerably before it could be used again. The rule of thumb is that pine is cheaper than oak, and narrower boards are cheaper than wider ones. FITTING A NEW TIMBER FLOOR

Kahrs Chevron light brown engineered wood, £119.99 per square metre, carpetright.co.uk.

Wooden Flooring By Katherine Sorrell

They are beautiful, natural, healthy, and get better with age – wooden floors are ideal almost everywhere in the house. SAND BACK YOUR OLD BOARDS If you are renovating, the simplest and cheapest option is often simply to sand back the boards that are already there. Not every floor is worth sanding, however. The effort of removing copious amounts of nails may be too much, or the floor may be riddled with woodworm, be too uneven, or made of such poor quality wood, that replacing would actually be better. If you are planning to sand, the first job is to mend or replace any boards that are damaged, hopefully with matching second hand boards (if you use new boards you will have to stain them later to match). Make sure you hammer down protruding nail heads before you start sanding.

16

New timber floors can be fitted anywhere in the house, on solid or suspended floors, though they’re often not advised for bathrooms or other wet areas. This is because wood expands and contracts according to the humidity of the room. Can you fit a timber floor if you want underfloor heating? The answer is yes, though timber does not give quite as high a heat output as a concrete floor. When retro-fitting, it may be possible to lay new boards over old ones – but only if they are very even, and usually covered with 18-20mm of ply to give a substantial base. Bear in mind that you will raise your floor level and that, when fixing the floor down, you’ll need to avoid any pipes and wires that may run beneath the existing floor. TYPES OF TIMBER The main choice you’ll be faced with is between solid wood, engineered wood and laminate. Solid wood is just that – whatever type of wood it is goes all the way through, so it looks entirely natural and can be sanded again and again. It’s available in the form of boards, strips (less than 10cm wide), blocks (extremely strong, laid in patterns such as herringbone and basket weave) and parquet (like blocks, but thinner).

To advertise in the The Edition call 01333 313941

We complete one job at a time with all work carried out at a fixed price by Marshalls approved installers

Engineered wood (sometimes called multi-layer or, confusingly, laminated) is made from layers of solid timber or a veneer of solid timber on top of MDF, plywood, chipboard or softwood, with a balancing veneer beneath. Most are made up of either three or five layers, cross-bonded for greater stability. A top layer of at least 5mm allows for limited sanding if necessary. Laminates generally comprise a resinimpregnated decorative paper surface layer (with photographs of real wood) bonded to a thin MDF or chipboard core. With cheap versions it’s easy to spot the pattern repeat and they’re not awfully durable, but more expensive versions are incredibly tough and come with long guarantees. Timber floors are given ‘grades’ describing their appearance (nothing to do with quality or durability). They vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, but are often called ‘select’, ‘natural’ and ‘rustic’ or ‘country’. As you might imagine, they therefore range from very even in colour and grain to rather gnarled and knotty.

‘Rustic’ grades are the cheapest and ‘select’ the most expensive.

FINISHES FOR FLOORBOARDS • PAINT: a great cover-up, available in a range of colours.

• STAINS: may be oil or water-based. Will change the colour but may still need a finish for protection.

• WAX: a polished wooden floor is a sight to behold, with a lovely gentle sheen and natural smell, but they do require regular rewaxing.

• OIL: gives a natural finish, sinking deep into the grain to protect the wood. Again, they need re-applying regularly, so don’t even consider it unless you’re prepared to put in the hard work.

• UV-CURED OIL AND WAX: almost like lacquer, but with the look of oil or wax.

• LACQUER AND VARNISH: available in matt, satin and gloss finishes, these are very hard wearing but don’t give such a natural finish.

Walks

Crail & Fife Ness Circular Shared with Walk Fife by Colin M

Distance: 8km Duration: 1h 58min Route Type: Easy Walking Difficulty Grade: Grade 2 This circular walking route takes in the beauty of the Fife Coastal Path and the charming village of Crail. The village of Crail is one of Fife’s most poplar tourist locations and it offers walkers taking on the coastal path an ideal place to stop and recharge. The route begins in the village itself. There is plenty of parking available and the village can also be reached by the regular bus service. You start the trail by heading down through the village to the harbour where you will pick up the Fife Coastal Path. The Fife Coastal Path is a excellent route to walk and is very popular in the summer months.

18

The path takes you from the harbour along the coastline past the decommissioned Crail Airfield which saw service in both world wars and is a interesting place to explore especially for photographers who like abandoned locations. Passing the airfield you skirt along the edge of Crail Golf Course towards the head land of Fife Ness. This is the most Eastern point of Fife and offers some spectacular views and is an ideal place to stop for a rest before heading inland to make your return to Crail. The home stretch follows Balcomie Road which has a stable footpath alongside it and takes you back in to the village and to your start point. This a pleasant walk particularly in the summer months and suitable for most walkers but the coastal path will present some issues to those with limited walking abilities.

Parenting

Making STEM Fun By Kate Duggan

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) are the fastest growing industries in the world. Even if your child doesn’t fancy a career in STEM, they will need to use elements of it throughout their working life. According to The National Science Foundation, “To succeed in this new information-based and highly technological society, students need to develop their capabilities in STEM to levels much beyond what was considered acceptable in the past.” So how can you help your child to develop a real enjoyment for STEM? Science There are lots of children’s science sets available to buy, but you don’t actually need any fancy equipment to conduct simple experiments at home, such as: • Asking your child to add a few drops of oil to a glass of water. Discuss what they think will

20

happen. Will the oil and water mix or stay separate? • Finding four old, dull two pence coins. Soak each one in a different liquid (water, coke, vinegar and lemon juice) for a few minutes to see which liquid cleans the coin the best. Technology Computer programming now features in the National Curriculum and many schools offer basic coding clubs from Key Stage 2. Paul Lyons, IT Director at Ebuyer.com, explains, “Even if your child has no interest in becoming a software developer, they will benefit from skills such as problem solving and following instructions which can be applied to other areas. Many parents may not know where to begin, but introducing educational aspects into children’s technology use at home can have a real impact on a child’s ability.” There are lots of resources available to help your child at home. Useful websites include:

Engineering K’Nex model building sets are a fun way to introduce engineering concepts. The K’Nex Education Introduction to Simple Machines: Levers and Pulleys Set, for example, contains more than 170 pieces, and instructions for building eight mini machines. You can also help your child to make simple structures using household items. Straws and play dough are ideal materials for building model bridges. Or try searching www.instructables.com for instructions on making structures out of lolly sticks or toothpicks.

Maths Kjartan Poskitt, author of Murderous Maths and Ambassador for the National Young Mathematicians’ Awards 2017, says, “I always say that maths is like broccoli. You either like it or you hate it, but you have to have some because it’s good for you. If learning the tables is driving your child mad, what can you do to sauce them up? The secret is to play around with numbers and get to know them. Here are a couple of little facts and tricks to get you started: • If you write out the digits 1 2 3 4, you can turn them into 12 = 3 x 4. You can also do this with 5 6 7 8 because 56 = 7 x 8. • Pick any three consecutive numbers (e.g. 4, 5 and 6). Multiply the smallest by the biggest, and then add one. (So here we get 4 x 6 = 24, then 24 + 1 = 25). The answer is always the same as the middle number squared (5 x 5 = 25).”

Spring Clean Your Beauty Routine by Kate Duggan www.kateduggan.co.uk

It’s not just homes that benefit from a good ol’ spring clean… DITCH OLD MAKEUP AND SKINCARE PRODUCTS Most of us are guilty of holding onto favourite cosmetics way longer than we should do. CLEAN MAKEUP BRUSHES Makeup brushes and cases can get decidedly grubby, so it’s a good idea to give them a gentle clean on a regular basis. Most cosmetic bags can be washed by hand, using a mild detergent. Brushes can be cleaned with face wash, baby shampoo or a mild soap. Soap is probably the easiest. Managing Your Stress

• Uncertainty and Feeling out of control and unable to change situations.

By Allison Runham Persistent stress can affect our health and even cause serious illness, so we need to know how to reduce stress and its effects. ‘Stress’ can refer to two different but related things: situations or events that put pressure on us; and our reaction to that pressure. Stress can:

• A life that lacks change, purpose or activity. • Clutter and disorganisation. Research shows just the sight of clutter causes stress. Your stress threshold may depend on: • Your perception of the situation (affected by your positivity (or lack of it) and past experiences).

• Affect your mental health, causing problems such • Your mental health and emotional resilience. as depression and exacerbating existing mental • The support you receive. health issues. Symptoms of Stress: • Affect your physical health by preventing proper sleeping or eating, and causing excess cortisol and adrenaline release. This makes you feel unwell and may eventually lead to serious conditions, e.g. heart disease, asthma, stroke, and diabetes

What Causes Stress?

• An inability to enjoy yourself/take an interest.

• Major changes or events: bereavement, moving home, financial crises, exams, redundancy, retirement, job change, marriage, relationship break-up, illness/injury, parenthood. ‘Happy’ events put extra pressure on us not to appear stressed.

Gardening

Overhaul Your Lawn

By Pippa Greenwood

It has rained so much in recent months that my lawn has taken a battering, though the flower and vegetable beds are starting to pick up. Over-wet conditions can cause roots to die off and will reduce the oxygen in the soil. Worse still, any areas of the lawn you’ve walked on or moved a wheelbarrow over will have become compacted or squashed. Thus, the air spaces in the soil are dramatically reduced, and the heavier your soil is, the worse the problem is likely to be. So for green grass that’s ready for summer, it’s time to get to work. Check over your lawn mower and see to anything that needs sorting. If necessary, take it to a reputable outlet for a service as soon as possible.

28

If your grass needs cutting, make sure you don’t set the blades too low for the first few cuts, as this weakens growth and makes weed invasion more likely. After mowing, you can relieve some of the soil compaction to allow air down to the roots, making for better growth and healthier grass. If only small areas are compacted, drive a garden fork into the lawn every 4-6 inches or so, getting the fork tines to a depth of 4-6 inches, then gently ease the handle of the fork back and forth to enlarge each drainage hole. Next, mix some sieved garden soil or loam with horticultural sand (about one part soil/ loam to nine parts sand) and brush across the lawn and into the holes you’ve made. The result is a drainage system over those compacted areas. If the soil in the garden is quite heavy or contains a lot of clay, the whole lawn will benefit

CALL ELIE 01333 330123 from aerating. I recommend you buy, borrow or hire a ‘hollow-time aerator’, either as a hand operated one, a machine or a mower attachment. This cuts cylinders of soil from your lawn and when filled with the ‘topdressing’ mix above will result in longer-lasting drainage channels.

Walking on a very wet lawn soon wears it out and kills off grasses. To repair bald or thin patches, roughen up the areas using a rake and then sprinkle a suitable seed mix on to match the existing grasses. If you’ve not got many patches to sow, you can buy small patch repair packs.

Any moss should be removed, so apply moss killer and then rake it all out after the time specified on the pack. The lawn will look worse initially, but it allows more air to the roots of the grass plants and gives them more space to grow and spread too.

Once all the work is done, keep off your lawn for a few weeks to allow it to take advantage of all that TLC and grow away really well.

Life Begins

How Do I Tell If My Elderly Neighbour Needs Help? By Kate McLelland According to Age UK’s report “Later Life in the United Kingdom”, 3.64 million people in the UK aged 65+ live alone. With so many older individuals living independent lives, it often falls to neighbours to sound the alarm if the behaviour of an elderly person gives cause for concern. So what are the signals that show something may be wrong? What should I look out for? Signs such as curtains remaining permanently open or closed, or newspapers left sticking out of the letterbox, can indicate that there may be a problem. The first step should be to knock on your neighbour’s door. If they answer, try to engage them in conversation, and if you are invited in, use your visit as an opportunity to check how they are living. Does the house look clean and tidy? Is it warm? If you’ve made several attempts to knock on the door but there’s no answer, you could ask people in neighbouring properties if they have seen or heard anything. Finally, ring round the local hospitals to see if your neighbour has been admitted. If you continue to draw a blank, it may be time to call the police. Calling social services If there’s no emergency but you suspect that your elderly neighbour may have developed a mental or

30

physical health issue that puts them at risk, check if they have a relative or close friend that you can phone. If the answer is ‘no’, you could call the Age UK helpline on Freephone 0800 12 44 222 or contact the social services department at your local council. When a local authority is told that someone may be in need of care and support they are obliged to carry out a needs assessment, even if the individual in question has not requested one. Meals on Wheels There is usually a clear course of action when an older person is found to be at risk or in distress. However it’s not always so straightforward when someone simply appears to be lonely or not eating properly. One solution may be to help them set up a ‘Meals on Wheels’ delivery. Fife’s Meals On Wheels Service provides a hot two course lunch for over 700 residents on a daily basis as well as being an important contact for some elderly people who otherwise may not have the chance for social interaction. This can be arrange by calling Fife Council on 03451 55 15 03 As a concerned neighbour, you could make a real difference with a simple intervention, whether that’s starting a friendly chat or taking positive action to support the elderly person in question. Scotland’s largest student-run arts festival, On The Rocks, returns between the 6 April – 15 April with over fifty events at the University of St Andrews – making it the biggest yet. Celebrating a decade as Scotland’s largest studentrun arts festival, On The Rocks is a creative platform for students to showcase their talents as artists, photographers, dancers, musicians, actors and comedians. The festival has the patronage of St Andrews honorary graduates Sir Sean Connery, Dame Judi Dench, Dame Helen Mirren and Joanna Lumley, as well as graduates Crispin Bonham Carter and Siobhan Redmond, and British actor Simon Pegg. The celebratory 10th anniversary programme covers a wide range of genres including comedy, musicals, art exhibitions, and community-wide events including an evolving mural and a range of arts and crafts workshops held in conjunction with local primary schools. Festival Director and St Andrews student Sneha Nair said: ‘Now entering its tenth year, On The Rocks is bigger and better than ever. This year’s committee has worked tirelessly to build upon the hard-earned reputation of past teams to be more inclusive and ambitious than even before.’ On The Rocks offers events to watch, enjoy, and to participate in, such as a ceilidh in the grounds of St Andrews Castle. Other venues for the festival include The Byre Theatre, Barron Theatre and University of St Andrews Students’ Association, with performers taking to the more traditional stage as well as hitting the streets with “flash-mob” performances. Locations also include local restaurants and popular public spaces, including the Old Union Café which will host festival favourite: live, acoustic ‘Music Cafés’.

One of the festival highlights includes an independent, large scale production of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night (or What You Will), which follows a pair of twins - Viola and Sebastian - who are shipwrecked and separated on the island of Illyria. Viola takes on a man's identity and falls in love with her master Orsino, while Sebastian falls in love with the Lady Olivia who is trying to avoid the advances of her puritan house master, Malvolio. This year, On The Rocks will explore themes of emotion and inclusivity in creativity with the St Andrews PRIDE parade as well as RE FORM, an ethical fashion show hosted by Students For Global Health and “Tales by Moonlight” hosted by the African Caribbean Society featuring as part of the festival’s event line-up. Other highlights include a 24 Hour Create-A-Thon, a special concert by the Madrigal Group and Art On The Rocks, a series of art exhibitions which will showcase work curated by both student and local artists. Sneha continued: ‘we are so excited to have been able to put together a programme for 2018 that offers an irresistible combination of new events and festival favourites. We’re really looking forward to seeing our plans come to life, and cannot wait to share it with you.’ Tickets for events are available from the Byre Box Office, Monday to Saturday 10am to 4.30pm, by telephone on 01334 475000, or 30 minutes before each event (if still available) on the door. The programme is also available online. For further information on all events visit: http://www.ontherocksfestival.com

Local Group

Singing For The Memory Group Who is the Singing Group for? It is for people with Dementia who live locally and might enjoy group singing. The group also provides support for the carers. Who are we? We are a group that provides opportunities for people with Dementia and their carers to come together to socialise and to sing, with the emphasis on enjoyment and fun. We are not a choir, and do not aim for performances. We work in partnership with Kilrenny Parish Church Outreach volunteer team, East Neuk Frail Elderly Project, Alzheimer Scotland, local C.P.N. team and Fife Health & Social care. What happens? Each meeting starts with a warm welcome and cup of tea & biscuit, served in the Kilrenny Church Hall lounge, giving us a chance to chat. After that we sing together in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere with a break for refreshments. There will be words on the big screen for everyone to see easily with words written down to help others. A Music Leader will lead the singing and will be accompanied by various instruments. Our repertoire is varied and includes favourites from yesteryear, hymns, songs from musicals and films. There will be request slips available for you to ask for your favourite hymn or song too. We will sing together in the Kilrenny

34

Church Hall and encourage and give the opportunity, if desired, to get on our feet to stroll along with the music. What are our aims? The singing sessions offers stimulating and social activities, designed to enhance well-being, provide enjoyment and boost confidences and lives affected by memory problems and Dementia. Research shows that such activity reduces stress and agitation, encouraging a “feel good factor. There will be an information table offering guidance and where to find support for those affected by Dementia. There will be volunteers at each singing session, however people with dementia need to be accompanied for the whole session by a relative, friend or carer. You Never Have To Spring Clean Again By Marla Cilley

All our lives we have been subjected to the torture of Spring Cleaning! Our mothers and grandmothers thought that this was the way to get the house clean.
