The Person Behind The Business Q&A Name & Business: Daniel Docherty, 2 Wheel Care. Where do you Live? Pitscottie. What prompted you to start the business? I have been a keen cyclist since I first learned to ride a bike and like many young boys was obsessed with dismantling everything to see how they worked so it was a natural progression to develop this interest alongside my love of cycling. What did you do previously? I went straight into bike mechanics from leaving school and enrolled in a variety of professional courses then immediately launched 2 Wheel Care. How long have you been in business? Since 2007. What do you like best about St Andrews & The East Neuk? Fife offers fantastic scenery and wild life which I enjoy. It’s a nice area to live with easy access to major towns and cities.
Favourite Quote? “Give a man a fish and feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime. Teach a man to cycle and he will realise fishing is stupid and boring.” (Archbishop Desmond Tutu). Is there a particular charity you support? CCLASP (Children with Cancer and Leukaemia, Advice and Support for Parents). My sister had a serious childhood cancer and they were unswerving and very generous in the help they gave to our family.
Something that not many people will know about you? I hold a HGV licence, I’m occasionally asked to transport livestock to various parts of the UK and the Republic of Ireland. Something that's on your bucket list? I’d love to do a bit of travelling, in particular Whistler in Canada.

Home & Interiors Making An Entrance By Katherine Sorrell
Your hallway is the first part of your home you see when entering. A well thought-out design helps make an impression. Hallways are crucial to the look and feel of a house, acting as a ‘welcome home’, a connection between rooms and a vital storage area for everything from shoes and umbrellas to coats, gloves and scarves, plus all kinds of things that don’t have a specific place elsewhere. On the wall In a narrow hallway, pale colours emphasise a sense of space. Specialist light-reflecting paints may help, or look for patterned wallpaper with a metallic sheen, and add large mirrors. Choose an extra-tough paint if you expect wear and tear, or add a dado rail and clad the walls below it with panelling, tiles or hard-wearing vinyl wallpaper. Periodstyle tiles or embossed wallpapers suit older properties with period features. Durable floors Flooring should be non-slip, durable, dirtresistant and easily maintained. Darker colours are generally better than pale, especially if you have pets and children. Stone, ceramic or quarry tiles, or Victorian encaustic tiles, are all easy to care for, while solid wooden boards or parquet simply require regular polishing or waxing. Linoleum or vinyl can look impressive but carpet is more problematic. Choose a colour or pattern that won’t show the dirt, and make sure it’s suitable for a hallway: an 80:20 twist classified for heavy domestic use is often the best. Lovely lighting Light in the hallway should illuminate steps, stairs and thresholds clearly and help provide an even flow of light. With a high ceiling, a beautiful chandelier, or a series of pendants, looks great; otherwise, a row of downlights set into the ceiling is better. Avoid protruding wall lights in a narrow hall where they become obstacles. Sensible storage Built-in storage makes the most of available

space. Shallow, floor-to-ceiling cupboards with doors painted the same colour as the walls, or mirrored, are discreet but hold masses. Alternatively, use free-standing cupboards, sideboards, tables, benches, hooks or racks that suit your layout and style. Somewhere to keep post and keys is useful: perhaps a bowl and rack on a console table, radiator cover or shelf, or a small, wallmounted cupboard and hooks. Finishing touches Windows will benefit from shutters, blinds or curtains, with fabric co-ordinated with cushions or upholstery. A long, thin floor runner works beautifully on hard flooring. Fit shelving above doorways or above head height along the hall’s length for books and delicate items. And, finally, add a personal touch with paintings, photographs or other artworks.

I saw someone doon the street with a powered attachment which seemed to tak a lot o’ the effort out of the pushin’. [Murray] Yes! There is a system called TGA Powerpack which simply clamps onto a normal wheelchair. It has a powerful motor and a battery pack. By pressing the controller with one finger the motor assists in the pushing. It will cope with quite steep inclines and has a range of about 8 miles. [Mr P] Aye. That’s the sort of thing. Canada - Athabasca Glacier By Solange Hondo
Spreading out from the ‘Columbia’, the largest icefield in the Rockies, Athabasca is among the world’s most accessible glaciers, a popular day trip from Lake Louise, Jasper or even Banff, though this involves a longer drive. Winding along the Continental Divide, past soaring peaks, forests, waterfalls and lakes, the Icefields Parkway leads almost to the very edge, near the meeting point of the Jasper and Banff National Parks.
Even more exciting is the iconic ride on one of the giant Ice Explorers. The first few minutes include a steep scary descent on a stone track until you reach the edge of the Athabasca, a tongue of ice, six km long and thicker in places than the Eiffel Tower. Glacial vistas, snowy mountains etched into the sky, it’s like the end of the world, even though the Explorer can only venture so far on the crunchy surface. Enjoy the challenge of feeding your family with a buddy burner. If you were in scouts, you know what I am talking about. Play games by flashlight, read to them, just remember to stay calm and don't let your home get panicked. You are still in charge.
Plan B is like being on a camping trip for me. I love to make do with what every I have. Since we live in the country and have our own water system, we have to be prepared. Anstruther Rowing Club Success On Saturday 15th September 2 skiffs from Anstruther, The Chris o’ Kanaird with a Womens 50+ crew and The St Ayles with a Mixed Open crew, headed off to the second Castle to Crane rowing race of 21km from Dumbarton Castle to The Finnieston Crane in the heart of Glagow. Setting off at 30 second intervals, the boats left Dumbarton and raced up the Clyde being cheered on by passers by along the banks. In all, 73 boats including more than 50 Skiffs gathered this year for the largest open water rowing race to have been held in Scotland, with clubs travelling from afar as Holland, Orkney, England, Ireland and across Scotland. Both crews took just over 2 hours to complete the course, not knowing how their competitors before and after them were fairing so had no idea of where they were placed. The prize giving beside the Glenlee on the Clyde riverbank was the fitting location to find that they had crossed the line first in both of their categories. An amazing result as the club had won the same titles the year before. Club Captain Barbara Elliot said "A great achievement by St Ayles Rowing Club at this fantastic event, we will be back next year with our boats to defend the titles yet again".
