Open Galleries Evening

The now traditional Galleries Evening opens this year’s festival. Galleries, studios, workshops and all sorts of other venues (including shops) throwing their doors open for an evening to showcase the extraordinary wealth of visual arts and crafts created in and around Peebles. From commercial galleries to a fish shop, from a former police cell to a museum, you can expect to find work to suit every taste and budget…plus some special treats. This year there is also the Creative Peebles Festival Passport. Pick up your passport at the first gallery you visit then get it stamped in any 8 of the 14 venues on the trail to be entered into a prize draw for £200 to spend on work by Creative Peebles Festival artists. All the venues are marked on the map on the centre pages, the page at the back of the map has a more detailed listing of each. FREE Most of the galleries and shops are open during the day throughout the festival. Some may only be open at the weekend. Please check the venue listing for opening hours. 7.30pm

Horse McDonald – Flying Solo Summer

An opportunity to hear one of Scotland’s finest singers in an intimate and definitely personal performance in the vaulted Laigh Hall of the 14th century Neidpath Castle. Horse McDonald is the kind of singer who can touch the coldest heart with one note - her songs are both devastating and uplifting and her voice is stunning. Her solo performances don’t only showcase her vocal range and the unique texture and tone of her voice, they are also opportunities for her to sing songs that are not usually in the band set. Laigh Hall, Neidpath Castle, EH45 9JL

Spy Game - The 39 Steps

The British Admiralty Needs You! It is 1914 on the eve of the Great War, Britain is threatened not only from without but also from within. There are whispers in the diplomatic circles of a ring of spies, the Black Stone Spy Ring. Do you have what it takes to emulate Richard Hannay, track them down, evade capture and crack the clues hidden in the note book of Franklin P. Scudder? all whilst sauntering around Peebles. In this spy game, for groups of up to 5, each player takes a turn to play the agent on the run. The agent’s goal is to evade pursuers and track down clues for the team at locations around the town. Each player will also take a turn as a member of the Black Stone Spy Ring tailing other agents and trying to catch them in the act of gathering clues. Each round takes 1 - 2 hours. The stakes are quite simply the safety of the British Navy’s deployment! Eastgate Theatre Café Age 12+ £5 or £20 for teams of up to 5 11am

Tweeddale Society presents

The Painters in My Garden The Festival Lecture by Nigel Osborne MBE BA BMus (Oxon) DLitt FRCM FEIS FRSE Many years after the Glasgow boys had painted in Cockburnspath, the internationally acclaimed musician, composer and aid worker Nigel Osborne took inspiration from their story to create two pieces of music: The Painters in my Garden and The Painters in my Garden 2. Their paintings, he says, remind us of many other stories about the village, ranging from Hutton’s geological discoveries on the sea cliffs nearby, to the bell which a local family who made Beethoven’s favourite piano placed in the tower of Cockburnspath church. This fascinating talk is a meander among the paintings and their stories, with a little music. Nigel Osborne has received wide international recognition as a composer and for his humanitarian work, pioneering methods of using music to support children who are victims of conflict. He is Emeritus Professor University of Edinburgh; Consultant, Peking University; and Field Officer, SAWA for Development and Aid, Bekaa Valley, Lebanon.
