Don Quixote, based on Miguel de Cervantes’ epic novel of the same name, regales the adventures of the eccentric nobleman and his faithful squire Sancho Panza, as they help to bring a vivacious young couple, Kitri and Basilio, together. This energetic 19th-century ballet is enlivened by Ludwig Minkus’ spirited score and is a wonderful showcase for the virtuosity of The Royal Ballet's principal dancers. Created for The Royal Ballet a decade ago, Carlos Acosta’s exuberant production featuring Tim Hatley’s characterful designs brings the heat and romance of Cervantes' classic novel to life.

Woman Walking is a beautifully poignant play imagining several interactions over a period of time between Cath, a modern woman carrying the guilt and trauma over the death of her mother, and writer Nan Shepherd. Long since deceased, Nan is brought back by Cath to help her find resolution through her dialogue with Nan and through the Cairngorms themselves in all their rough beauty, light and weather. Sylvia Dow’s play has both humour and pathos and brings themes of grief, resolution and the healing power of nature.

Aly Bain, Scotland’s supreme traditional style fiddler; Swedish multi-instrumentalist Ale Möller, and American old time fiddler, singer, guitarist and banjo player Bruce Molsky join their considerable talents to celebrate their Celtic, Nordic and Appalachian cultures.

Aly needs little introduction to Scottish audiences and is best known in the Scandinavian world for his work with Sweden's multi-talented Ale Möller. Ale is an eight-time Swedish Grammy winner and constant musical explorer.
Bruce Molsky is one of the most revered ambassadors for America’s old-time mountain music and has aptly been dubbed “the Rembrandt of Appalachian fiddlers” by virtuoso violinist and sometimes bandmate Darol Anger.

Jia Ning Ng

Singaporean pianist Jia Ning Ng recently graduated from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland where she won many prestigious awards. With a particular affinity for Schubert, it is natural that she should choose, as the climax of her recital, his final instrumental work, the great Sonata in B flat, D.960, described by the New Yorker as ‘a work of vast dimensions and vertiginous depths’.
Jia Ning opens her recital with Beethoven’s dramatic ‘Tempest’ Sonata, which is followed by a collection of miniatures brought together by Schumann as his ‘Bunte Blätter’ which ranges from joyful to heartbreaking, jaunty to stormy.

Tim Kliphuis Trio

Classically trained Dutch violinist Tim Kliphuis is widely regarded as the heir to his mentor, Stéphane Grappelli. In his trio, Tim is joined by two Scots, both supremely talented jazz musicians in their own right. In this semi-improvised programme, the trio will perform movements from their most recent works: Reflecting the Seasons and Brandenburg. Music by Vivaldi and Bach is re-interpreted in a blend of classical, gypsy-jazz and folk, all delivered with humour and finesse, whilst remaining respectful to the originals.

A graduate of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Portuguese soprano Filipa Portela enjoys a busy career in concerts, recitals and opera. Edinburghborn Gregor Forbes is a pianist and composer who studied at Cambridge University and the RCS. Both are now resident in Leipzig. In this concert, Filipa and Gregor drive out the chill of a Scottish winter with a programme of warm, evocative, Mediterranean-influenced music. We’ll hear songs by Maurice Ravel, Manuel de Falla and Xavier Montsalvatge as well as a littleheard song cycle by Barcelonian composer Eduardo Toldrá. There will also be solo piano pieces by Ravel and Debussy.
