Over the next three months the Eastgate programme is rich with youthful ideas, energy and imagination – with a really exciting set of performances either for or by young people. In April two of our favourite companies producing work for children return to the theatre. Tortoise in a Nutshell will (quite literally) pitch their tent in the space, creating a strange new world which a young boy discovers is inhabited by The Lost Things. Then Jabuti Theatre explores how it feels to be a refugee girl, using music, puppets and aerial dance to conjure up her Paper Memories. Some of our own young performers take to the stage for three different shows in May. Only Connect, a creative collaboration between Stride Young Dance Company and musicians from Nomad Beat, offers an inspiring mix of new dance and live music. Meanwhile Tweed Theatre’s talented young actors present two performances of Willy Russell’s Blood Brothers; and Peebles High School drama department bring Twisted Tales – a set of short plays devised and performed by their own students. Rounding things off in late May and early June are All the Stars (including the Little Stars) from Fiona Henderson School of Dance, twinkling their toes across the Eastgate stage. This is the story of newcomers to the afterlife who discover, much to their surprise, that death is not actually the end. Incredulous, they form their own necropolitan community where every night is party night: songs get sung, love gets made and whisky flows. Above the ground a mysterious event throws the lives of the living into uncertainty. In the cemetery, an underground revolution begins, led by the stoical Mrs Mark and her band of necropolitans. Gounod’s opera is the most constantly enthralling version of the story of Faust, who trades his soul with the Devil for youth and power. Virtuoso leading roles, a large chorus, sensational sets, ballet and an ecstatic finale make this the epitome of theatrical spectacle. Romeo and Juliet

Auditorium Three ballets, one world premiere. The contemporary face of The Royal Ballet is shown in works from three of today’s leading choreographers. Christopher Wheeldon’s Within the Golden Hour is based around seven couples separating and intermingling, to music by Vivaldi and Bosso and lit with rich colours suggested by sunset. Crystal Pite’s Flight Pattern, revived for the first time, uses a large dance ensemble and Górecki’s familiar music from his Symphony of Sorrowful Songs for a poignant and passionate reflection on migration.

Auditorium Romeo and Juliet fall passionately in love, but their families are caught up in a deadly feud. They marry in secret, but tragic circumstances lead Romeo to fight and kill Juliet's cousin Tybalt. As punishment, he is banished from the city. The couple take drastic action to be together with terrible consequences. Kenneth MacMillan's passionate choreography for Romeo and Juliet shows The Royal Ballet at its dramatic finest. One of Scotland’s great fiddle players, Duncan Chisholm takes to the Eastgate stage in the company of multi-instrumentalists Jarlath Henderson, Hamish Napier and Innes Watson.

The celebrated Gaelic piping tradition of his father’s native South Uist, in the Outer Hebrides, forms the bedrock of Fred’s intensely expressive, uniquely adventurous style.

The band play music from Duncan’s latest album, Sandwood, which contributed to him winning Composer of the Year and Album of the Year at the 2018 Scots Trad Music Awards. The correlation between music and the natural world lies at the heart of Duncan’s compositions. Although his first-love instrument remains the great Highland bagpipes, over the years he has also mastered whistles, Scottish smallpipes or reelpipes and Irish uilleann pipes. He was also one of the first Scottish artists to forge dynamic links with his Celtic cousins in Brittany and north-west Spain, adding to his repertoire of influences and tunes. Fred is renowned as an outstanding composer.

The Shee Auditorium The Shee is an exceptional all-female band boasting powerful and emotional vocal performances by three beautiful voices and instrumental prowess on accordion, two fiddles, flute, mandolin, and electro-harp. Incorporating the talents of Radio 2 Folk Musician of the year 2017 Rachel Newton on harp and Sting’s go to clog dancer Amy Thatcher on accordion, the band have a huge range of musical influences. On this tour they are joined by Scottish-Icelandic percussionist and drummer Signy Jakobsdottir. These eight fun-lovin’ masters of ragtime, Dixieland blues and early swing are recognised as one of the hottest bands playing out of one of America’s steamiest states.

Former electrician Daiori decided to become a musician after seeing Christy Moore perform. He is now considered to be one of the most important singers and bouzouki players to come out of Ireland.

This is the band that Grammy Award-winning Keb’ Mo’ sought out when he recorded his album, BluesAmericana. In a recent interview Keb said he chose the Feetwarmers because he wanted it to be “a joyous thing – a party” and this band is renowned for its sense of fun and hugely-entertaining and boisterous on-stage antics. Having worked with artists including Christy Moore, Dónal Lunny, Martin Hayes, Dennis Cahill, Alan Doherty, Danú and Julie Fowlis, he launched his solo career at Celtic Connections, in 2016. His second album True Born Irishman was released in October and the following spring he won two BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards – Best Traditional Track and Best Newcomer. The Counterfeit Seventies

The Hard Road to Everest

From the decade of glam rock, through to new wave music, and everything in between - this show features the music of Slade, The Bay City Rollers, Sweet, T.Rex and many more.

On September 24 1975 Doug Scott became one of the first two Britons to climb the south west face and reach the summit of Everest. Over the years since he has been on 40 expeditions to the high mountains of Asia, and made some 30 first ascents. His personal style and climbs have been described as visionary. Tonight Doug gives a fascinating insight into his adventures as one of Britain’s greatest ever mountaineers.

Members of the four piece band have toured worldwide, working with some of the biggest names of the decade. Their performance of the music is coupled with a stunning light show, costumes from the period, and video footage of many familiar sights and sounds. So whether you want to sit back for a trip down memory lane, or get your glad rags on and boogie, this is a two hour show you won’t want to miss!

The evening will include a sale of Nepalese goods and an auction of signed framed mountaineering prints, with proceeds going towards the work of Community Action Nepal. Doug will also be signing copies of his posters and books. www.canepal.org.uk

Inspiring Life A creative day packed with information, energy, food for the brain, body and spirit, lots of different activities, music and stories - all to help you to become a happier healthier you. Drop in at any time and stay as long as you want to…there are different workshops from 1.15 until 6.30pm when everyone is invited to join a discussion in the theatre. The programme: 1.15pm Singing for Wellbeing with Kathy Kennedy, the Cheyne Gang The Cheyne Gang is a community singing group for people living with long term respiratory conditions. Singing helps, why not give it a try? 2.15pm Don’t Judge a Book by the Cover Bridget Dickson from See Me explores how books can be a way to both connect with and escape from day to day challenges, and a useful tool for opening up difficult conversations. Featuring characters such as Pip Pirrip, Eleanor Oliphant and Eeyore. 3.15pm Stride Young Dance Company A performance of new work by this dance company which meets weekly at the Eastgate, followed by an opportunity to discuss the process with tutor Sara Boles and dancers. 4.15pm Everyday Drama Everyday life is a series of dramatic scenes with props and costumes, scripts, transitions, tensions and cliffhangers. In this workshop Douglas Roberts will help take some simple scripted scenes and act out different endings, explore how to make things up as we go along, learn how to present ourselves to other people with more creative confidence and ease of expression. 5.30pm Dance Improv with Curious Seed Dance Co Led by Artistic Director, Christine Devaney, this fun workshop will encourage you to explore your creativity through movement, improvisation, writing and drawing. Tali, told not to remember, finds her memories crumpling and ripping before her eyes, until her family realises that the only way to be a family in this new place, is to remember. The annual dance show by Little Stars, the pre-school pupils of The Fiona Henderson School of Dance.

The annual awards ceremony is the opportunity to celebrate the successes of the Junior and Senior pupils over the last dance year. The event will include a selection of performances from recent shows.

A highlight of the dance year in Peebles this specially choreographed show will display all the new steps the pupils have learned over the past year in a wonderful variety of theatrical dances in ballet, tap, modern, jazz, acro, Irish, street and Highland dance. Sat 25 & Sun 26 May 2.30pm £12, £10

Darkly comic, sadly poignant, each piece illuminates the humanity of the uplifting characters. In A Lady of Letters Miss Ruddock writes spiteful letters until the police turn up “We’re asking you because who was it wrote to the chemist saying his wife was a prostitute?” Graham in A Chip in the Sugar reacts to his Mum’s past admirer - “A man shouldn’t be living with his mother at your age, Frank says.” In Her Big Chance Lesley, a small parts actress, deludedly thinks the big time’s coming - “The director wants to see your knockers.” By turns melancholic, richly funny, above all true, Bennett’s characters stay in the audience’s heads, enriching their view of the human condition. Spring into summer with the musicians of the Peebles Concert Band. This local band is made up of musicians ranging in age from 14 to 84, playing a variety of woodwind, brass, bass and percussion instruments.

Groups of Peebles’ young dancers, musicians and visual artists come together in this new creative collaboration. Members of Stride Young Dance Company dance to music written and performed live by a dozen musicians from Nomad Beat Music School who have, in turn, taken inspiration from artwork created by Evie Douglas. This project, part of the Inspiring Life Creative Initiative, explores what happens when art, dance and music connect.

The concert will feature all sorts of music from classical to movie themes, musicals to marches, with a bit of 70s and 80s pop thrown in for good measure. It promises to be a fun night packed full of fabulous music! Conductor: Vaughan Fleischfresser Fri 14 June 7.30pm £10

...Talk Roads Less Travelled Auditorium Following his return from cycling around the world on a singlespeed bike, Markus Stitz wasted little time in founding Bikepacking Scotland and developing an exciting range of bikepacking trails, including the Wild About Argyll Trail and Central Belter. He has also been on adventures near and far, from cycling on a tandem in Northern Norway to, most recently, exploring the roads less travelled in Chile and Argentina. Join Markus for an evening of inspiring photography, films and storytelling that will fuel plans for your own adventures on two wheels. Thurs 6 June 7.30pm £12

Eastgate Development This brochure contains the last full programme before the Eastgate closes for the eagerly anticipated development of the auditorium and improvements to the café/foyer. This first phase of developments will take place between June and August 2019. The auditorium upgrade will involve replacing the main block of retractable seating, fixing hand grabs to seats on the central aisle, and realigning seating on the side balconies to ensure good sightlines, greater comfort and easier access. Meanwhile the main entrance on the east side of the building will be reshaped, with a new, fully accessible double door, as well as an extended glass wall which will add space to the café and introduce more daylight into the foyer. During this period the Eastgate team will work from pop up premises in order to deliver events both indoors and outside during the summer months, and to coordinate Creative Peebles Festival at the end of August. Please look out for news and information in all the usual places – press, radio, TV, social media, and email. Then prepare for the building reopening in September, just imagine the autumn events to be launched by the Borders’ busiest theatre – the much improved Eastgate.
