CONTRACTOR OF THE YEAR Marina Mechanical Marina Mechanical was founded in 1958 by Bob Hussey, originally called W/C Sheet Metal & Furnace Co. In 1964 BART construction relocated the company to Marina Blvd. prompting a name change to Marina Heating & Air Conditioning.

In 1971 Bob’s son, Jim Hussey joined the firm to promote Marina’s growing service department.

Jim ultimately founded a controls group, Bay Point Control. In 1993 Bay Point Control, Inc. and Marina Heating & Air Conditioning merged creating the dba Marina Mechanical. In 2015 the Board of Directors adopted and Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) and in 2020 the organization became 99% employee owned.

From HVAC commercial work, architectural sheet metal, refrigeration services, commercial repair as well as general service and maintenance, Marina Mechanical covers almost every aspect of HVACR services throughout the nine Bay Area Counties.

Marina Mechanical became a signatory in 2002 and has since enjoyed the benefits of a highly trained, skilled workforce and increased market share. Marina Mechanical understands that without the trades and partnerships with organizations like the Building and Construction Trade Council of Alameda County, which it would not have the quality offering that it currently provides to its clients.

DEDICATED COMMUNITY DONOR & ACTIVIST (IN MEMORIAM)

Tom Guarino Tom Guarino was always the calmest person in the room. It didn’t matter how the world swirled around him, he sat in the eye of the storm taking it all in. In those times, the troubled and frenzied alike sought his counsel. Leaning on his quiet confidence, Tom would skillfully steer them back on course and send them on their way.

That character trait served Tom well over the four decades he spent as a radio journalist, legislative aide, chamber director and community relations executive with Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E).

Tom had been a success in each of his career choices but firmly settled into his final role when he joined PG&E, where he most recently served as senior government relations representative. During his time with PG&E, Tom could be counted on as a big supporter of Organized Labor – of our events and fundraising initiatives, including the Cypress Mandela Training Center’s pre-apprenticeship program.

In his position, Tom would move mountains to see that PG&E was represented and was a tireless supporter of community events, projects and organizations. He seemed to know everyone in the East Bay and his laid-back attitude (Hawaiian shirt and crocs were his calling cards) set him apart from other corporate executives. Everyone Tom came into contact with felt like he was a close friend.

Tom often downplayed his skills with others. He said he knew people needed to talk and be heard. He thought if he did that, he’d at least be accomplishing a minor public service.

And while he often could suggest solutions, he took pride in steering individuals through exercises that allowed them to figure out their own solutions. He took great pride in this skill and often reminded people of the Woody Allen philosophical insight that “80 percent of life was just showing up.”

Little known facts about Tom, are that he was born in Hollywood and raised in Covina. He excelled at both baseball and basketball throughout his youth. As a 14-year-old, his Pony League baseball team finished second in the annual World Series and at age 16 his Colt League team won the World Series. Tom was a guard on his Northview High School basketball team which won the Montview League championship and made the quarterfinals of the CIF playoffs. He also was a first baseman on the Northview baseball team, which won the school’s first ever CIF championship.

After attending college at Cal Poly Pomona, Tom moved to Northern California to take a job as news director for KCPO Radio in Quincy. During his time in Plumas County he welcomed daughter Teresa Ferro Guarino, named after Mother Teresa, into his life.

Tom’s untimely passing on December 30, 2020 is felt by all of us, and in particular his family, daughter Teresa Guarino, grandchildren Alyssa Rose and Valentino Guarino Pineda, and loyal companions, Mona and George Harrison Guarino.

RETIREE OF THE YEAR Tim Deal Tim has been a member of Glaziers Local Union 169 since 1983. He is a second generation Glazier, following in the wake of his father, Chuck, and Uncles: Brock, Charlie, and Mike. Tim’s son, Brad, is currently working as a Journeyman Glazier as well.

During Tim’s 36 years of service, he held a position on the Executive Board as President for Local Union 169 for many years prior to becoming the Business Representative. Throughout his Glazing career, Tim had roles as a Lead-man and Superintendent for various companies, though he spent roughly 20 years with Architectural Glass and Aluminum.

Since becoming a Business Representative for District Council 16, Tim has remained a source of knowledge and humor for fellow members and colleagues alike.

FRIEND OF THE TRADES Victor Uno Victor Uno has been a member of IBEW Local 595 since 1977, indentured as an apprentice and topping out as a journey-level Inside Wireman in 1980.

Brother Uno was one of the first people of color admitted into Local 595’s apprenticeship program and he has worked for greater diversity and inclusion for all into the trades.

He is a member of the Electrical Workers Minority Caucus (EWMC) and served a term as its National President.

He worked in construction on many jobs in Alameda County, and did 10 years as an electrician at the Lawrence Berkeley Lab’s 88” cyclotron. While working with the tools, Victor served as the union’s Registrar, was elected to the union’s Examining and Executive Boards, and served as the local’s President. Brother Uno taught for 15 years in the IBEW-NECA apprenticeship program before becoming its Training Director in 1999.

In 2002 Brother Uno was elected Local 595’s Business Manager. Under Brother Uno’s leadership, organizing became a focus of 595’s work where wage theft campaigns were taken up for immigrant workers exploited by unscrupulous contractors. Further, the Zero Net Energy Center was built as an affirmation of the IBEW and NECA’s commitment to fight climate change.

In 2014, Brother Uno joined the IBEW’s 9th District Office as an International Representative and retired from that position in 2019.

Brother Uno has been an active leader in the Asian and Pacific American community, as a founding member of the Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance (AFL-CIO) in 1992. He served for many years on the Board of Asian Health Services, a community clinic that provides service to over 30,000 low-income families. He was appointed to Oakland’s Board of Port Commissioners, serving two terms and two terms as the President.

Brother Uno is married to Josie Camacho; they raised two sons, Nacho and Amado and have two grandchildren, Kaia Kiku and Leo Nacho.

TOM MULLARKEY DELEGATE OF THE YEAR Rafael Gonzalez Rafael Gonzalez is the Vice President of the Alameda County Building Trades Council.

He has been a proud member of LIUNA local 304 since 1990. He worked out in the field for 20 years for a variety of construction companies, the longest stint being with his most recent employer, Mountain Cascade Inc, where he spent 14 years. While there, he started as a general laborer and moved his way up from Lead Man, to Foreman, to Safety Manager.

Regardless of his position or title, he never forgot his roots as a laborer, attending as many meetings as possible and always making sure the safety and well-being of his fellow laborers was primary.

Since 2010, he has proudly been serving LIUNA Local 304 as President and Field Representative.

Rafael and his wife, Kathryn, have two children, in whom they both have great pride.
