The East Asia Regional Council of Schools is an organization established in 1958 and since then it has worked to build learning and leadership capacity in international schools in Asia.
EARCOS focuses on building an inclusive community of learners and it currently has 225 member schools in East Asia. These schools have a total of more than 190, 908 pre-K to 12th grade students. EARCOS also has 146 associate members— textbook and software publishers and distributors, universities, financial planners, architectural firms, insurance companies, youth organizations, etc— and 43 individual members.
Membership in EARCOS is open to accredited elementary and secondary schools of international character in East Asia.
EARCOS holds one leadership conference every October and one teachers’ conference every March. In addition, EARCOS funds several weekend institutes hosted by member schools throughout East Asia. EARCOS also organizes a meeting for EARCOS heads of schools every April.
EARCOS publishes its newsletter, the EARCOS Journal, which is distributed to its members three times a year, and a directory of all of its members.
Objectives and Purposes
To promote intercultural understanding and international friendship through the activities of member schools.
To broaden the dimensions of education of all schools involved in the Council in the interest of a total program of education.
To advance the professional growth and welfare of individuals belonging to the educational staff of member schools.
To facilitate communication and cooperative action between and among all associated schools.

Message from the EARCOS Board President & Executive Director
Dear EARCOS Community,
I am thrilled to welcome you to the 2024 EARCOS Leadership Conference!
This year’s theme, “Belonging and Becoming,” is a powerful one. These two words, though distinct, are deeply intertwined. Belonging speaks to the feeling of being accepted, valued, and recognized as part of a community. Becoming, on the other hand, reflects the journey we all take—an ongoing evolution as individuals, professionals, and members of our communities. It’s about striving to become the best versions of ourselves. And the truth is, we cannot fully become without first belonging.
As we gather for this conference, I hope each one of you feels a profound sense of belonging—feels supported, encouraged, and inspired by this EARCOS community. This is a space for all of us to share experiences, learn from one another, and deepen the bonds that unite us as educators and leaders. Together, we can build stronger, more inclusive communities within our schools and beyond.
I would like to take a moment to express our deepest appreciation to our Director, Ed Greene, and the exceptional EARCOS staff for their extraordinary work in preparing this event. Their dedication has ensured that this will be a powerful and memorable experience for us all. I also want to extend heartfelt thanks to our sponsors for their generous support, as well as to the EARCOS Board members, who continue to provide invaluable strategic guidance and tireless service in shaping the future of our organization.
Finally, let’s give our recognition and thanks to the many members and friends of EARCOS who have prepared thought-provoking presentations and keynote speeches. Their contributions will undoubtedly enrich us all, both professionally and personally.
As we embark on these days together, I wish you all an inspiring and rewarding conference. Let us embrace this opportunity to connect, to learn, and to grow. Together, we belong, and together, we become.
All good wishes for a great conference!
Catriona Moran EARCOS Board President
Welcome!
What a pleasure it is to welcome each of you to the 2024 EARCOS Leadership Conference. Thank you for carving out time from your always busy schedules to join together for what promises to be a memorable event.
Our theme, Belonging and Becoming, speaks to a host of phenomena impacting all of us in today’s tattered world, but especially, the students whose futures we help build every day. Today, so many young people struggle to find their place, the numbers of young people who feel alone, isolated, unaccepted and lost are alarming. While schools cannot fix every wrong, we endeavor to ensure that the communities we build provide a safe and healthy place for all, where everyone is included, and everyone is supported on their personal journey of becoming.
So many educational leaders who are with us have tremendous stories to share about the school communities they are building and leading, places where young people do feel welcome, seen, and appreciated for who they are and who they can become.
I want to thank all of our presenters and speakers for gathering together to help us engage in deep conversation and learning together. We are indeed fortunate to have such a dynamic cadre of presenters with us this year. They are the heart and soul of the conference.
A conference such as this takes months and months of detailed preparation. I want to recognize the work of the EARCOS team—Kristine De Castro and Maica Cruz, who handle a mind-boggling array of organizational logistics all year long in preparation for the event--and Edzel Drilo,Ver Castro and RJ Macalalad, who do so much to ensure that everything comes together—and on time!
This conference would not be possible without the support and vision of our Board of Trustees. We all owe them our appreciation for the time they give to EARCOS in addition to their already hyper-busy lives. And, finally, please do remember to visit our exhibitors, without whose support this conference would not have been possible. They have great ideas and programs to share with you.
I wish each of you a fantastic time together and thank you for joining us.
In appreciation,
Edward E. Greene, Ph.D. Executive Director

To What Extent is Inclusion a Truly Universal Concept? - The Culture Dialogue
OCHAN KUSUMA POWELL & KENDALL ZOLLER
We have made the case for schools to develop inclusive cultures in which all members of a community feel known, loved, safe and successful: wherein each stakeholder can claim a sense of belonging, of being seen and valued, and where psychological safety in the environment encourages innovation and creativity. Research links between student achievement and inclusion have been well-documented and are related to increased student engagement and a positive school climate. (read more on Whova App)

The Future of Smart: Human-Centered Education in the Age of AI
Biography
Dr. Ulcca Joshi Hansen is Chief Program Officer at Grantmakers for Education, a member organization that serves as a trusted partner for education philanthropists as they adapt to the changes impacting our world. She brings to the role more than twenty-five years as an educator and advocate working to shift the foundational values and approaches that undergird America’s education system. Ulcca is a first-generation American who began school as an English-language learner; she was the first in her family to complete college and graduate school. Along the way, she lived and studied in other countries, experiencing how different systems approach learning and define achievement. Her own experiences have fueled her desire to interrogate and advocate for an expanded vision of what it means to ensure every child has access to a high-quality education in America.
Ulcca began her career as an elementary school teacher in Newark Public Schools. During her twenty-five year career she has gained experience across the non-profit, public, and philanthropic sectors, in the US and abroad, leading programs, conducting research and crafting policy. She has worked with educators, students, communities, business, and civic leaders to support developmentally-aligned, human-centered learning experiences that unlock the unique potential of individual learners regardless of their background, circumstances, cognitive or physical differences.

The Richard T. Krajczar Humanitarian Award
Dr. Richard T. Krajczar’s commitment to international education was unparalleled and equaled only by his genuine love for friends, colleagues and the students served across the EARCOS region.
Caring for others was not just Dr. K’s passion but raison d’etre. His support of those who provided sustenance and care for the less fortunate was among his most endearing traits. To that end, the EARCOS Board of Trustees has established the Richard T. Krajczar Humanitarian Award to recognize, each year, the work of one not-for-profit organization with a proven record of philanthropy in the East Asia Pacific Region.
Presented by Mark Tomaszewski, President, Tiecare International, to Ruth McLellan on behalf of Purple Community Fund (PFC) in collaboration with St. Joseph’s Institution International.
Supported by
18:30 - 21:00
Closing Reception
The closing reception, generously sponsored by SEARCH Associates. Attendees are invited to gather for this final occasion, where we will express our gratitude, foster continued connections, and look forward to future collaborations. Admission is included in the conference registration fee.
