Message from the EARCOS Board President & ISKL Head of School

Dear EARCOS Teacher Community,

I am thrilled to welcome you to the 2025 EARCOS Teachers’ Conference!

This conference is designed for you—the dedicated teachers and teacher leaders in our EARCOS schools who pour your time, energy, and passion into shaping young minds and inspiring the next generation. Teaching is more than a profession; it is a calling, a commitment, and a profound privilege. Each day, you ignite curiosity, nurture creativity, and empower students to think critically and engage with the world in meaningful ways.

The joy of being a teacher comes from those magical moments—when a student grasps a new concept, finds their voice, or discovers a passion that will shape their future. The true reward of teaching lies in the connections we build, the lives we touch, and the lasting impact we make. This conference is a celebration of you—your dedication, your expertise, and your impact. It is a space for you to grow, collaborate, and be inspired—to fully embrace this year’s theme: Empowered to Explore and Express.

Over the next few days, I encourage you to immerse yourself in the learning, reflection, and meaningful conversations that will take place. Take this opportunity to celebrate the incredible role you play and the difference you make every single day. Your work matters. Your passion matters. And we are so grateful for all that you do.

We look forward to the sharing, collaborating, and inspiring moments that will unfold in the workshops and keynotes throughout the conference. May this be a time of deep learning, connection, and renewed enthusiasm for your extraordinary work.

On behalf of the EARCOS Board of Trustees, I want to express our heartfelt appreciation to our Director, Ed Greene, and the exceptional EARCOS staff for their tireless efforts in preparing this event. Their dedication has ensured this will be a powerful and memorable experience for us all. A special thank you to the Teacher Advisory Council for guiding the direction of this conference, ensuring it is meaningful and relevant to our community. And finally, we express our deepest gratitude to The International School of Kuala Lumpur for their generous hospitality in hosting us on their beautiful campus.

So many people have worked hard to create an inspiring and rewarding conference—now, it’s our opportunity to connect, learn, and grow together. Let’s embrace this experience and empower one another to explore and express in new and meaningful ways.

Wishing you all a fantastic conference!

Dear EARCOS Teachers’ Conference Participants,

Welcome to the 20th Annual EARCOS Teachers’ Conference! It is a true pleasure to host you at The International School of Kuala Lumpur (ISKL) as we come together to explore, learn, and grow as educators. The opportunity to gather in person, share experiences, and exchange ideas is invaluable, and we are honored to be part of this meaningful journey with you.

This year’s theme, Empowered to Explore and Express, reflects the incredible work you do every day; guiding students to think critically, communicate effectively, and navigate an increasingly complex and everchanging world. As educators, you create environments where students feel safe to express themselves, take intellectual risks, and discover their voices. Through your passion and dedication, you empower the next generation to engage with curiosity, creativity, and confidence.

Over the next few days, you will have the opportunity to immerse yourself in conversations, workshops, and learning experiences that celebrate the spirit of inquiry and innovation. You will gain new insights, reflect on best practices, and explore ways to enhance student learning. But beyond that, this conference is about you; the educators who bring passion and purpose to your classrooms every day. This is your space to engage with colleagues, challenge perspectives, and cultivate ideas that will enrich your teaching and your students’ growth.

A vibrant professional learning community like this thrives on connection, and we encourage you to take full advantage of the wealth of knowledge and expertise around you. Whether through structured sessions, informal discussions, or shared moments of reflection, we hope you find inspiration in the diverse perspectives and experiences that make up this incredible group of educators.

We are deeply grateful to EARCOS for fostering such a dynamic and supportive professional network. A special thank you also goes to the many individuals at ISKL who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure a seamless and welcoming experience for all. And most importantly, thank you – to each of you – for your dedication to learning, growth, and the students you serve.

On behalf of ISKL, we are honored to host you. May this conference be a time of energy, collaboration, and inspiration.

Welcome to ISKL, and enjoy the conference!

Warm regards,

The International School of Kuala Lumpur

LEGO® Serious Play®: A Preconference Crash Course for the Courageously Playful Leader

Can we do a better job of the really important conversations in our schools by approaching them over a big pile of LEGO? Conversations like strategy, culture, community engagement, and even recruitment? LEGO Serious Play is a powerful (and playful!) method for harnessing the full range of expertise and perspectives on your team to solve complex problems. It helps your people to embrace complexity, communicate powerfully, and better exercise their creativity. Every participant gets to approach the ideas at hand from a cognitive starting point that resonates for them, be drawn to consider them from multiple perspectives, then bring them to conversation in a way that levels the playing field of personality, experience, tenure, and standing group dynamics. Embracing a Coaching Mindset

In our extremely busy schools the thought of slowing down and taking time to reflect often feels impossible. When we are so busy, we can’t imagine taking time to pause. But it’s the process of reflection, when we “synthesize, abstract and articulate the key lessons taught by [our] experience” that not only makes us more productive, but builds a sense of self-efficacy (Di Stefano, et all, 2014). What if, instead of following our instinct to just race through, in fact, the opposite is true: slowing down enables us to be even better? (Read more on Whova App)

AI and the Future of Learning: Paving the Way for Empowered Education

This talk will explore the promises and challenges of integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into education, with a focus on how it is rapidly shaping the future of learning. AI has the potential to revolutionize education by fostering more personalized, equitable learning experiences and empowering both students and educators. However, as we look to the future, we must also address critical risks, such as bias, flawed design, automation of learning, and over-reliance on AI, which could deepen existing inequities and compromise the human-centered nature of learning.

This talk will examine the latest advancements in AI and their implications for teaching and learning. Through real-world examples, we will consider strategies for harnessing AI responsibly and ethically. Together, we’ll explore how educators can lead the way in ensuring that AI becomes a tool for empowerment and innovation while paving the way for a more inclusive and sustainable future of education.

What Makes Great Teachers Great

Teaching is a noble profession and those who teach in international schools have chosen a stimulating yet challenging career. With consideration for the unique opportunities and challenges presented by independent schools located in a range of host countries, we focus on the discovery of beliefs and practices of effective teachers that cross the international/cultural contexts that exist in international schools. What do great teachers in international schools do? What do they believe about teaching and learning in this vibrant context? Having engaged in a two-year study of highly effective teachers in the East Asian region, we will share qualities and characteristics that make these teachers successful.

Biography

Leslie W. Grant is an Associate Professor of Education in the Educational Policy, Planning, and Leadership Department. Her research interests focus on classroom-based assessments and international comparisons of teaching and learning. She is involved in several research projects, including international comparative case studies of award-winning teachers in the United States and China and the efficacy of development assessment literacy in pre-service teachers, in-service teachers, and educational leaders. Dr. Grant began her career in education as a middle school teacher and later served as a test developer, content editor and item writer for the California Testing Bureau (CTB/McGraw-Hill). (Read more on Whova App)

James H. Stronge is a Heritage Professor of Education, a distinguished professorship, at William & Mary. He teaches doctoral courses within the Educational Policy, Planning, and Leadership Department, with a particular focus on teacher and leader effectiveness, human resource leadership, legal issues in education, and research design. Additionally, in conjunction with others, his work at William & Mary has led to externally-funded grants of contracts totaling more than $28,000,000 to date.

Dr. Stronge’s research interests include policy and practice related to teacher quality and effectiveness, teacher and administrator evaluation, and teacher selection. He has worked with numerous state departments of education, school districts, and national and international educational organizations to design and implement evaluation and hiring systems for teachers, administrators, and support personnel. The 3Rs of Teaching Today: Relationships, Resilience, and Revolutionary Tech

Teaching in the Intelligence Age requires special attention to the 3Rs: relationships with students and colleagues, personal resilience, and leveraging revolutionary technology to accomplish our goals. With anecdotes from her “Princessipal Diaries,” passages from her book, and vignettes from the world of ed tech, Ms. Cummings offers specific answers to these questions:

• How do we create relationships with students and colleagues to ignite learning and inspire our own growth?

• How do we fill our own buckets to avoid burnout and find the joy and courage to teach?

• How can we combine our human expertise with the power of AI to elevate teaching and learning along with our quality of life?

Ms. Cummings examines the 3Rs, offering powerful ways to connect with students and create supportive and engaging learning environments. She explores essential self-care strategies to maintain our enthusiasm and effectiveness as educators and finally shares how to harness emerging technologies, like Brisk Teaching, to reclaim our evenings and weekends, streamline administrative tasks, and captivate students.
