Welcome Message from the Executive Director

It is a privilege to welcome you to the 2024 EARCOS Teachers’ Conference. This year’s subject strands, as we all will recall, were interrupted by the two-year hiatus that was Covid-19. Therefore, it gives me especial pleasure to welcome the EARCOS educators in the following strands to their conference, after a much too long delay!

Global Issues/Global Citizenship

Social Studies/Humanities

Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics

Middle School Service Learning

We are all so pleased to be able to join with one another for the second consecutive year to celebrate international education across the region. The next several days promise to offer rich opportunities to think, question, reflect, learn, and share together. I thank each of you for making the journey to support one another in our shared commitment to the very best of teaching and learning.

I am especially appreciative of the support for this conference that we have received, once again, from the Teacher Advisory Council. The theme the council members created nearly a year ago, Awareness, Agency, and Action, has resonated deeply with all our speakers and presenters.

The rich array of topics offered this year reflects the deep quality, talent and commitment of the EARCOS community of educators. I wish to especially thank those of you who have come to the conference to offer a workshop. Your participation is the very heart and soul of this conference. And--I am grateful to the EARCOS Teacher Representatives and the newly formed PLACE team, who do so much to ensure our conferences and other PD’s events provide the very best opportunities for learning.

Please also join me in extending our appreciation to the conference corporate sponsors and to the ever-devoted EARCOS staff for all they do over the course of 12 months to prepare the wonderful days we are about to enjoy together. And our thanks, always, to the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau for their assistance and support.

Finally, please do not hesitate to let us know should you require any assistance during the next several days. In the meantime— Enjoy! Welcome one and all to ETC 2024!

Dear distinguished delegates,

On behalf of Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB), it is my pleasure to extend a warm welcome for all delegations of the 19th East Asia Regional Council of Schools (EARCOS) Teachers’ Conference.

TCEB commits full support to the East Asia Regional Council of Schools (EARCOS) for organizing the 19th East Asia Regional Council of Schools (EARCOS) Teachers’ Conference which is to be held during 20-23 March 2024 at Shangri-La Bangkok, Thailand.

As a government organization in charge of promoting Thailand as a destination for international meetings, we are committed to supporting international collaboration of the global society and relishing every opportunity to facilitate prominent international gatherings that will lead to tangible benefits for the Thais as well as global citizens.

We value the impact and legacy that the 19th East Asia Regional Council of Schools (EARCOS) Teachers’ Conference will bring to our country and beyond.

I hereby extend the most cordial invitation to you to explore the attractiveness of our country, the legendary Thai hospitality, and superb congress facilities alongside a fruitful congress program of the 19th East Asia Regional Council of Schools (EARCOS) Teachers’ Conference in the Kingdom of Thailand.

Yours Faithfully,

Having Hard Conversations: Finding Your Voice Around What Matters

As colleagues, coaches or team leads, we often come up against situations where difficult topics must be addressed. What do we know about the best strategies for those moments? What questions should we be asking ourselves before we speak, and what environments are best for when we do speak? Based on Jennifer’s book, Having Hard Conversations, and her work with conflict and interpersonal communication, this session will provide participants with action plans and scripting tools for having those necessary hard conversations.

Building Instructional Coherence Supporting Equity and Engagement in Mathematics

Instructional coherence means ensuring that every element of instruction — from core instruction to interventions to extended time—works together to advance grade-level student experiences. At the most basic level, a coherent instructional system builds academic and socioemotional supports that prepare the way for and extend grade-level learning. This means that students engage in instructional experiences that have a link and relationship with each other and with core grade-level instruction. (Read more on Whova App)

3 Steps to Building a Thriving Coaching Culture

Is your school working to build a coaching culture? Many schools in the EARCOS region are hiring instructional coaches and building coaching programs, but there is still a lot of uncertainty around what makes an instructional coaching program work. Some are successful, and others struggle. (Read more on Whova App)

From Passenger to Co-Pilot (to Autopilot?): Practical Ways to Assess WITH Our Students

For far too long, assessment is what we have done to students, not with them. If we are going to truly reframe and disrupt how students demonstrate their learning, assessment redesign must loom large on our collective radar. Research suggests the extent to which students perceive assessment to be authentic, formative for teachers and not reliant on external factors, the more they will engage in it. Integrating Literacy Throughout the Day: Practical and Powerful Ways to Bring Deeper Reading and Stronger Writing into Content Area Studies

It’s rare to find a class where students aren’t involved in reading and writing activities, whether it’s crafting math explanations, producing lab reports, or delving into historical texts. Regardless of age, students are routinely called upon to engage in nonfiction literacy tasks that extend beyond the reading and writing classroom. (Read more on Whova App)

NGSS 2.0: Rebooting your Schools’ Science Program

The NGSS & K-12 Framework for Science Education call for a massive pedagogical shift, providing equitable science learning through skills, concepts, and phenomena-based sensemaking. And though the NGSS (and AERO Science standards) just turned 10, many educators and schools are finding it challenging to get traction for their initial implementation or regain the powerful practices that lost ground in the pandemic. WASC Accreditation Training

WASC Self-Study Training - This one-day interactive WASC session will examine the WASC Guiding Principles and essentials of the Focus on Learning self-study process and the many ways it can be adapted to a school’s situation to ensure a meaningful self-study process. The session will provide an opportunity for EARCOS educators to learn about strategies inherent in Focus on Learning that support the school’s assessment of student learning in relation to schoolwide learner outcomes and academic standards.

Visiting Committee Member Training - This interactive session will: (1) prepare educators to serve on WASC visiting committees, emphasizing the roles and responsibilities of a WASC visiting committee member and; (2) examine the WASC Guiding Principles and essentials of the Focus on Learning process and its adaptability to support continuous improvement and high-quality student learning and well-being.

You Make A Difference - Catalysts of Change: How Tiny Actions Create Monumental Change

In 1995, Loung returned to Cambodia, 15 years after leaving the country, to reunite with her family. This marked the beginning of her journey as an activist in Cambodia, advocating through her writing and involvement in campaigns to ban violence against women, the use of child soldiers, and landmines. Nearly three decades later, Loung realized that her path of seeking healing and redemption had not been traversed alone. At its very beginning were the influential influencers, the original catalysts for change, who showed her how one could make a difference in another’s life. They were her mentors, teachers, and supporters, playing crucial roles in expanding her heart and mind, enabling her to not only survive her war but to work for peace. (Read more on Whova App)
