Sam Kim (Wine Orbit) 96 points – “It's sumptuous and plush in the mouth, displaying outstanding concentration and multi-layered mouthfeel. Wonderfully framed by loads of silky tannins, making it brooding and velvety at the same time”
Ray Jordan (Winepilot.com) 95 points – “As the name suggests it's from ungrafted Shiraz vines that are some of the oldest dry grown…the palate is more medium weight with impeccable balance while the fruit is laced with fine chalky tannins and complemented by fine-grained subtle oak…an elegant wine with a savoury finish that makes it such a good wine with food even now”
Ken Gargett (Winepilot.com) 95 points – “Displaying a silky palate with focus and finesse, the wine has fine balance and a long, lingering finish, with satiny tannins. This is a fifteen year proposition”

Tyrrell's Old Winery Shiraz is blended from fruit sourced from some of Australia's best shiraz regions. It’s always a very well made Shiraz that’s great everyday drinking.
We’ve done a bit of digging and, astonishingly, the 2024 vintage is 91% Heathcote fruit (which presumably is sourced in the main from Tyrrell's Heathcote vineyards that produce the outstanding Rufus Stone and Lunatiq Shiraz). The other 9% is from Tyrrell’s impeccable Hunter Valley resources.
Wine critic Ken Gargett (Winepilot. com) says “While Tyrrells are inextricably linked to the Hunter Valley, they have also long been a dominant force in Heathcote and this thoroughly enjoyable Shiraz is mostly sourced from there, with a dollop of Hunter Valley material as well. The colour is a bright vibrant purple. Quite a savoury impression given on the nose, with notes of mushrooms, beefstock, animal skins, warm earth and even a flick of vegemite. Still very youthful obviously, this is most enjoyable now but will look just as good in four to six years. The texture is sleek, the wine balanced, the length good and the tannins very fine. Great value. $17”.
Great value at $17 says Ken Gargett! Well, we agree but our price of $16 a bottle is better, but, drumroll... you know what’s coming...if you buy six we will give you six free! That equates to only $8 a bottle! That’s insane value!

Tyrrell's Old Winery Shiraz is blended from fruit sourced from some of Australia's best shiraz regions. We have done a bit of digging and astonishingly the 2024 vintage is 91% Heathcote fruit (which is presumably Tyrrell's Heathcote vineyards that produce the outstanding Rufus Stone shiraz). The other 9% is from the Hunter Valley. As always this shiraz is made to a style and quality that are consistent through vintages. Deep red in colour with a bright purple rim. A smooth, soft and spicy red wine with aromas of dark ripe fruit and subtle vanillin oak. The palate is full of rich shiraz flavours and is supported by firm tannins which provide good length and complexity. The Old Winery label has had a major face-lift in recent times and the package looks like a $20+ wine (and tastes like it too). It sells for cellar door at $17 a bottle. Our price is $16 a bottle, ok but drumroll... you know what is coming... if you buy six we will give you six free! This is insane value.

You are simply not going to find too many Cabernets of this class for this price. It's a cracking wine that blends the richness of Clare Valley with the linear elegance of Coonawarra. Beautiful aromas of perfumed cassis with a light lift of tobacco leaf and mint. The palate is so well crafted with fine chalky tannins threading precisely and working harmoniously with the slightly savoury French oak. A most complete wine. Drink: 2025-2040. Price: $34. Rating: 95/100.

A very attractive bouquet of complexity, variety and time. Aromas of fresh blackberries and dark skinned plums, layers of barrels spices and a gentle minty and eucalypt quality. (Truth is, I was expecting some eucalypt so I may be amplifying its presence more than is there). Purple flowers and black currant suggestions round out the bouquet. Delicious on the palate, true to the power and elegance a Cabernet should show without overstating any single attribute. The wine is taut and youthful with firm tannins and plenty of acidity. A great foundation for the fruit and ageing. Some roasted nut and toasty barrel spice qualities, fresh red fruits core and excellent structure. A lengthy and complex finish suggesting best drinking from 2029 through 2039+. Outstanding. Rating: 95/100.

3 trophies and 13 gold (including a gold medal and 95 points at the 2024 National Wine Show of Australia). Intense citrus fruit characters of fresh lemon and lime along with hints of orange blossom. Through the mid-palate there is excellent fruit presence with zesty fresh lemon and lime characters. The finish is crisp, clean and persistent. Kemenys

This has long been one of my favourite Cabernets from Coonawarra and this vintage will do nothing but enhance that. It is also, every year, one of the great bargains to be found anywhere. The wine spends time maturing in French oak. A black purple hue, this is beautifully worked, intense and yet elegant. Blackberries, tobacco leaves, cassis, hints of cigar boxes - think Cohiba Robusto. Gorgeously fragrant, there are also notes of bergamot and florals. Juicy acidity runs the full journey, to an extremely long finish with the silkiest of tannins. It is immaculately balanced from start to finish. Tightly woven, this is a classic and cracking Coonawarra Cabernet. Wonderful drinking now, but it is also a ten to fifteen year proposition. Not that I am suggesting they raise the price, but to be honest, it is almost an insult to a wonderful wine. Closure: screwcap. Date tasted: October 2024. Drink: 2024-2039. Price: $36. The winery is a leader in organic and biodynamic viticulture with fruit for all wines sourced from their estate vineyards in McLaren Vale. Under it's makers label this is one of Australia's most popular red blends. Stunning value here. A blend of 55% Shiraz and 41% Grenache, with a further 4% Mataro, the wine spent nine months in French oak. Aromas of ripe red cherries, cranberries, and forest strawberries, notes of sage, thyme, and a touch of dried bay leaf. Hints of star anise, balsamic undertones, and earthy forest floor, cacao nib and cedar. Juicy red and bramble fruits from the Shiraz, and a bright, spicy core from the Grenache. Mataro adds savoury, smoky notes and fine-grained tannins. Can cellar for 10 years plus but why bother? Delicious.

A cabernet sauvignon from a single vineyard located in the north of the Adelaide Hills. An area that is considerably warmer and drier than other areas in the region causing the low-vigour fruit to ripen earlier with more tannin. It opens with a burst of ripe mulberry, subtle notes of eucalyptus and chocolate, and hints of cedar and spice, promising a truly indulgent experience. Its velvety texture is underpinned by sturdy, finely grained tannins, creating a sense of sophistication. This winery is one of the most historic Australian wineries having been established in 1850 - it is regarded as the spiritual home of Langhorne Creek. Situated on the fertile flood plains of the Bremer River in Langhorne Creek, the malbec grape has been instrumental to many of their most famous wines. With production in the earlier days going to make a range of fortified ports and sherries, their very first varietal wine was actually a malbec in 1961. Possessing classic Langhorne Creek richness, structure and texture. The palate is a broad church of plum, blackberry and red cherry - and a hint of clove on the finish. Surely a contender for value buy of the year. Indeed, the range of four reds released here is definitely odds on for best buying collection for 2023. Maroon purple, this is a brooding, deep red with aromas of plums, chocolate, cigar boxes, dry herbs and raspberries - the black fruits kick in much more on the palate. There is good density, but the wine retains its freshness. With very fine tannins and a lingering finish, this is utterly delicious and should remain so for at least the next six to eight years. The palate exhibiting more chocolate, axle grease and blackberries as it develops in the glass. Terrific stuff. Date tasted: July 2023. Drink: 2023-2031. Price: $25. Rating: 93/100.

This is surely already a contender for one of the best value wines of the year. From a superb vintage, this comes from a range of vineyards at Nuriootpa, Craneford and Greenock, with vines as old as 128 years. It spent two years maturing in a mix of French and American oak puncheons, mostly older ones. Dark purple, the nose is redolent with chocolate and mocha. McLaren Vale, located about 40–45 minutes south of Adelaide in South Australia, is one of the country’s most celebrated and historic wine regions.
Renowned for its Mediterranean climate, the region enjoys warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters, with cooling breezes from the Gulf St Vincent and the slopes of the Mount Lofty Ranges. This climate, combined with remarkable geological diversity—over 55 unique geologies— creates a patchwork of vineyard sites, each producing distinctive wine styles.
Shiraz is McLaren Vale’s signature grape, accounting for more than half of all plantings. These wines are known for their velvety texture, intense berry flavors, and notes of dark chocolate and spice, with the best examples showing depth, vibrancy, and excellent aging potential.
Grenache, often from old vines, has also emerged as a regional star, producing vibrant, spicy, and food-friendly reds. Cabernet Sauvignon thrives in cooler sites, yielding full-bodied wines with classic blackcurrant and soft tannins. Mediterranean white and red varieties such as Fiano, Vermentino, Tempranillo, and Sangiovese are increasingly successful, adding diversity to the region’s offerings.
Yangarra Ovitelli Blanc 2023
Region: McLaren Vale Rating: 98/100CC
Some grenache blanc and roussanne was fermented on skins for around seven months (47% of the finished blend). The remaining fruit was basket pressed. Texture. For me, it's the defining point of this wine. Oh, I love the hard-to-pin-down flavours that drift through orchard fruits and citrus, suggest a piney and briny herbal note - like a sea breeze gliding through a cypress tree - and are further complexed with a hint of cracked fennel seed and white pepper. But it's the texture that really elevates this, the frisson of pumiceous (it's a word ) grip and succulent fruit, the sapid, mineral/tonic quality, the elegant tensioning, fine-tuned to perfection. What a delight. Closure: screwcap. Alcohol: 13.5%, Drink: 2025-2032. Price: $70. Rating: 97/100.

This absolutely cracking McLaren Vale Shiraz saw maturation in new French oak barrels, sourced from the famous Troncais first in France. This is a star of the range for me. It is assisted in coming from such a superb vintage - a year that absolutely must be well represented in every serious cellar. A bruised plum hue, the wine opens with some toasty, vanillin oak notes, but they are well handled and add to the overall impression of a cracking red. There are aromas of chocolate, coffee beans, mulberries, dried herbs, plums and licorice. A wine exhibiting regional plushness, this is quintessential McLaren Vale Shiraz. Supple and seamless, balanced and with juicy acidity, there is serious length here, with a gentle fade and lingering finish. Ten years. Love it. Drink: 2025-2035. Price: $150. Rating: 95/100.

From a stunning vintage, this is really good value. Compare it to other prestige reds, especially those with considerable time in the cellar already, and this seems like a steal. In the end, all that matters is whether or not it is a good wine. And it is extremely good. The wine spent 29 months in a mix of American and French oak barrels, all new. Deep maroon, even with eight years ageing, the wine is still poised and taut, and still needs time. The nose exhibits notes of dry herbs, mocha, coffee beans and cocoa powder all supported by black fruits. There are silky tannins, immaculate balance plus extreme length and it carries all before it. Mitolo Wines is a renowned familyowned winery in McLaren Vale, South Australia, founded in 1999 by Frank Mitolo, whose Italian heritage from Abruzzo shapes the winery’s ethos of “forte e gentile”—strong and gentle. Inspired by generations of agricultural tradition, Frank Mitolo partnered with acclaimed winemaker Ben Glaetzer to craft wines that express both power and elegance, with a focus on individuality, integrity, and quality.
Mitolo’s first release, the 2000 G.A.M. Shiraz, quickly established the winery’s reputation for producing wines of depth, flavour, and intensity. The range has since expanded to include Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, and Italian varietals such as Sangiovese and Montepulciano, reflecting both the family’s roots and McLaren Vale’s diverse terroir. Mitolo works closely with local growers, notably the Lopresti family, to source premium fruit and maintain strong community ties.
The Mitolo Jester range is a collection of approachable, singlevariety wines from McLaren Vale, South Australia, designed to be enjoyed young and fresh. The range includes varietals such as Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Vermentino, and Sangiovese. The Jester Shiraz is known for its full-bodied style, featuring vibrant flavours of black cherry, plum, and dark chocolate, with fine tannins and a long, satisfying finish. The Jester Cabernet Sauvignon stands out for its use of the Amarone drying technique, where a portion of the grapes are air-dried to intensify flavour and texture, resulting in a wine that is rich, mouth-filling, and layered with notes of cassis, herbs, and tobacco. Crafted by the family-owned Mitolo winery, the Jester range offers excellent value and showcases the region’s bold, fruit-driven character.

Mitolo's Jester range is such great value. A reference to a "modern-day jester" who gathers friends around regularly to eat and drink well, and much like their medieval predecessors, reminds us that life shouldn't be taken too seriously. Sourced from the Mundulla Vineyard the Limestone Coast a region better suited to pinot grigio than Mitolo's home vineyards in the Vale. Generous and fleshy with soft acidity, displaying beurre bosc pear, golden delicious apple, yellow fleshed plum, peach and crisp pineapple. Hints of cardamom and subtle grassiness provide intrigue along with delicate mineral texture, all wrapped up in a smooth finish. Good grigio to enjoy with good friends.

What can we say? The Mitolo name on the label is synonymous with the 'Vale', having migrated to region in the 50s, and the winery is rated the maximum 5-stars in James Halliday's Wine Companion. James Halliday's vintage chart has not rated any McLaren Vale red vintage higher than the 9/10 awarded to the 2022 vintage (in over two decades). This is the best yet! It is dark ruby in colour. Classic shiraz with concentrated dark berry aromas and flavours of blackberry, mulberry, black pepper and beautifully modulated oak in support. Tannins are supple and ripe. Serious wine which can be enjoyed now or cellared for another decade. The quintessential McLaren Vale Shiraz. Kemenys

High in South Australia’s Barossa ranges, Eden Valley is where winemaking is stitched with heritage, heart and hope. This is not just another wine region - it’s a landscape that turns cool hills and rocky soils into vivid, unforgettable wines, inspired by generations of inspired craftsmen.
Eden Valley riesling is a tale of purity and freshness. Here, crisp morning air and mineral-rich soils conjure young wines which shimmer with citrus - lime, lemon and grapefruit—wrapped in florals and flinty minerality. With age, they unfurl into elegant textures and luscious toasted notes - each bottle a keepsake of place and time, equally delightful young or cellared for a decade.
Eden Valley Chardonnay is prized for its vibrant citrus and stone fruit flavours. It typically showcases aromas of lemon, grapefruit, white peach, and sometimes nutty or toasty oak notes, balanced by lively acidity and a creamy, textured mouthfeel. The style ranges from elegant and modern with crisp citrus and minerality to richer, well-structured expressions that age gracefully for up to 5+ years.
Grenache from Eden Valley carves its own path. In these elevated, breezy vineyards, it builds aromas of wild cherry, redcurrant and blood orange, threaded with pepper, mint and earth. The palate is lively yet refined—tannins like soft brushstrokes on old stone, all balanced by plush, juicy berries. Eden Valley grenache delivers rugged charm with a gentle hand.
Eden Valley shiraz is where power meets grace. Instead of Barossa’s heavier embrace, these wines are deep, flowing with blackberries, morello cherry and subtle spice—clove, cardamom, sometimes a flicker of pepper. Eden shiraz is mouth-filling but never overwhelming, with a delicate tannin structure that ensures elegance over raw strength. For those who seek wines with clear purpose, vibrancy and authenticity, Eden Valley is a source of continuous inspiration. This is a region where every bottle tells the story of its land and its devoted custodians.
Deadman Walking Eden Valley Riesling 2024
Region: Region
Rating: 93/100C
Dead Man Walking was created by exceptional winemaker Tom Kies in 2016. Sadly the development of this label was an integral piece of his valiant yet ultimately unsuccessful 9 year battle to overcome the Big C. Fortunately, the Riesling master John Hughes (founder of Rieslingfreak) has stepped in to keep the vision alive. Express aromatics of rosewater, apple blossom and the distinct minerality with lime citrus dominating as would be expected from the region. There is some generosity shown for Eden Valley here but with the slate minerality being the key focus with the subtle bouquet of fruit and florals supporting crisp finish. Sale proceeds from each bottle goes towards an education fund for Tom's sons.

Region: Eden Valley Rating: 97/100CC
An intense note of raspberry essence mixes with dried rose petals and subtle kelp aromas. It's almost playing cat and mouse - you think it's presented itself, and then more aromas appear: fresh leather and sour cherries. The palate is a beam of flavour, echoing the nose. A crescendo of silty tannins carries the flavours along, never interfering with graceful expression. This is glorious grenache providing off-the-charts enjoyment. It's so complete in its youth and will only gain greater complexity with age. Alcohol: 13.5%. Closure: screwcap. Date tasted: May 2025. Drink: 2025-2037. Rating: 97/100.

Like the stern but beautiful Norse goddess this wine is named after, it is formidable: bone dry, stoic and confident. Built around an austere line of sharp citrus, it also has good mineral grip and a pleasing lick of talc at the finish. There's a concentration of flavours without forcing any element, amplifying the attributes of a superior vintage. Effortless balance is achieved in this powerful wine. Rating: 96/100.

I used to live next door to this 109-year-old vineyard for nearly a decade and have seen the hard work and attention to detail that goes into its farming. The 2021 is an absolute stunner from a great vintage and I've no doubt that this will age gracefully for decades. The length of flavour with this release is quite something; the fruit is sleek, plush and on-point pure. Blackberry, Doris plum and black cherry layer with spice and hints of sage, bay leaf, pepper, olive tapenade, anise, violets and stone. Velvety and graceful in its flow on the palate with a fresh mineral cadence and superfine, powdered granitic tannins for support. It'll go down as one of the greats. Alcohol: 14.5%. BAROSSA REDS
Welcome to the Barossa— Australia’s beating heart of wine, where old vines are nurtured by hands that have tilled the same soil for generations. This region, just an hour from Adelaide, is a tapestry of vineyards producing some of Australia’s most famous and revered reds.
Barossa Shiraz is legendary, celebrated for its intensity, warmth, and generosity. It’s comforting, familiar, and always memorable. The oldest Shiraz vines on earth thrive here, gifting wines with depth, subtle spice, and plush, velvety tannins that age with grace.
Often described as Barossa’s unsung hero, Cabernet Sauvignon flourishes in the valley’s warmth. Unlike its leaner, herbal cousins from cooler climes, Barossa Cab is plush, with a silky texture and a full, rich finish. This is the Cabernet of long, lazy Sunday roasts, shared with family and friends in great spirit.
Mataro (sometimes called Mourvèdre) is deeply rooted in Barossa’s story. Once nearly lost, it’s now being revived by passionate winemakers who coax out its colour, strength, and unmistakable savoury edge. Expect wild plum, roasted game, earthy spice, and a sturdy backbone that also makes it a favourite for blending or for those seeking something a bit wild, a bit rugged—yet always inviting. Its resilience and individuality reflect the very essence of Barossa’s evolving identity.
In Barossa, the past is ever-present but never static. Each bottle echoes the legacy of those who came before, yet pulses with the excitement of the new.

I may have once said that Barossa Shiraz could be a bit boring, which is fairly independent thinking coming from a Barossa winemaker. But every time I'm reminded of my words (seemingly sacrilegious ones around these parts), I'll stand my ground and my retort remains unwavering... put Mataro in Shiraz and you'll make it taste even better! My blend of Shiraz and Mataro (about 50/50) has won a loyal legion of fans who love its expressive, savoury Barossan goodness. Since we started making it, it's picked up a bit of silverware at the local wine show and a gong for the "Best Value Red Wine in Australia" in Nick Stock's Good Wine Guide.
Very good colour with a rim of purple, the bouquet reserved and showing cold-meat, black-olive, pencilshavings and smoky characters, the palate full bodied and dense with fleshy texture and tightly packed tannins. Good concentration, depth and structure. Long finish. A serious cabernet. It's a little subdued at this moment, but 'came up' with airing in the glass and made a super-delicious drink. My first thought on tasting this wine was simply, wow, this might just be the very best Command Shiraz can recall, since the first release from 1984 (and remember, their 1996 won Best Shiraz in the World at the London International Wine and Spirit Competition). If one were to arrange a collection of the elite Barossa Shiraz, the prestige releases, this would sit with the finest and I suspect might well be the best value among them, bar none. A single vineyard site, the vines are now an extraordinary 127 years of age. The wine spends two years in a mix of new French and American oak puncheons. An opaque purple hue, the nose is ripe, rich and concentrated. Stunning aromas, we have mocha, coffee beans, cassis, florals, blackberries, and just dripping with molten dark chocolate. In the rolling hills and mistladen mornings of Piedmont, Nebbiolo isn’t just a grape—it’s the region’s beating heart. This is the land where history seeps into every vine, and passionate families transform the fruit of their labour into some of Italy’s most admired wines. From the celebrated villages of Barolo and Barbaresco to the welcoming table wines of Langhe Nebbiolo, every bottle promises a glimpse into Piedmont’s soul.
Barolo: The King of Italian Wines
Barolo reigns supreme—complex, powerful, and renowned for its “tar and roses” signature. With pale garnet hues that bely their intensity, Barolo wines are structured by firm tannins and vibrant acidity, demanding patience to truly reveal their layers of cherry, truffle, dried herb, and earthy spice. Crafted for longevity, Barolo stands tall at grand occasions but never loses the warmth of the cellar hands who coax its nobility from fog-soaked vines
Region: Piedmont
Rating: 96/100C
The Rivetti family have been producing wines from Piedmont for five generations. The family has over 25 hectares of vineyards all certified organic. The Ca Di Bruno is dedicated to Bruno Rivetti, an ancestor of the family (Ca Di Bruno translates to House of Bruno). A beautiful Barolo with a dense, polished palate of dried cherry, underlying orange peel and river stone character. Full bodied, and intense with a chewy, polished structure with medium tannins. The finish is long, persistent and lively. Bruno would be proud.

Barbaresco: Elegance on the Edge
Just a few hills away, Barbaresco is Barolo’s graceful twin. While it shares the grape's haunting aromatics—red cherry, violet, and subtle truffle— Barbaresco is admired for its refined tannins and approachable balance. Its lighter body and polished structure mean you can enjoy its perfume and subtle power a little sooner, though age only adds to its charm. Barbaresco is the storyteller at the family table: expressive, layered, and compelling.

Region: Piedmont
Rating: 96/100CC
Barbaresco is often referred to as the Queen of Italian wines sitting, alongside the equally revered Barolo. It's produced from the Piedmontese grape varietal Nebbiolo in the town of Barbaresco 10 kms from Barolo, its uncommon to find a Barbaresco Riserva available of this quality for less than $100 - unless of course it's from Roberto Sarotto. It exhibits graceful and expansive aromas, suggesting poised ripeness and ample ageing: soft cranberry and pomegranate, with some wild-mushroom and forest-copse richness. Soft, settled, balanced and refined Barbaresco, yet the amplitude of the vintage gives it a wealth and a richness of contour which will see it age effortlessly for at least another decade.

Foodfriendly and versatile, it's the perfect partner for classic Italian fare, from tomato-sauced pasta to hearty roasts.

When France pours a glass of wine, it shares centuries of soil, sun, family tradition, and quiet magic. Three regions—Chablis, Bordeaux, and Burgundy each offer a different side of the French spirit, uniting precision, prestige, and passion.
Chablis:
Chablis sits in the north of Burgundy, where the mornings are crisp and the soil perfect. Here, Chardonnay is bright, cool, and shimmering with minerality. These wines are clean and racy, filled with lemon zest, green apple, and a soft, flinty finish—a gentle nod to the limestone beneath the vines. A glass of Chablis is like a splash of cold water on a summer day: invigorating, honest, and refreshing.

Just north of Sydney, the Hunter Valley is where Australian winemaking began, with vines planted as early as the 1820s and a rich heritage still alive in glass. This region is best known for its iconic Semillon, a wine that greets you with fresh citrus and herbal brightness in youth, then slowly deepens into golden honeyed complexity with age, all without the need for oak. Hunter Semillon’s effortless elegance and longevity make it a world benchmark.
Alongside Semillon, Shiraz from the Hunter Valley offers a softer, spicier style than its warmer-climate cousins, medium-bodied with red and dark berry notes, evolving with bottle age into velvety earth and leathery nuances. The region’s Chardonnay also shines, varying from lean, mineraldriven styles to richer, peachy expressions, reflecting its place among Australia’s pioneering Chardonnay producers.

In his 2025 vintage report Bruce Tyrrell proclaimed that "we are going to have some great Semillon and Chardonnay to sell particularly at the Hunter Valley level, and they will be a level above their price range" - and he was spot on.
Sourced from a small selection of some of Tyrrell's top Semillon vineyards around the Hunter Valley. Most of the vineyards are dry grown and have an average vine age of 40 years. Interestingly, the wine spent a short amount of time on yeast lees to gain extra complexity and mouth feel. The nose is vibrant with an abundance of citrus fruits and floral elements. The palate is medium bodied, yet intense, with great length and a brisk acidity. Wow - is the finest Tyrrell's semillon vintage ever? If not it is certainly a landmark vintage.

Pleasant Maurice O'Shea Shiraz 2021
Region Hunter Valley Rating: 99/100CCC
It is an outstanding wine of distinction, if somewhat chameleonic in nature. On one hand, it is ethereal, fragrant, and composed, but at the same time, it is powerful, audacious and layered. This multiplicity of perspectives makes Maurice O'Shea one of the most captivating wines in the country. Red fruit purity is the essence of the wine. But layered upon this is a touch of floral perfume, a thread of citrus zest, lacy berry fruit and a hint of spiced Persian lamb. The length is phenomenal, and every sip proves beyond doubt why it is worthy of greatness, even in a challenging year. Closure: screw cap. Alcohol: 13.5%. Drink: 2023-2041. Rating: 98/100.

Secret Label Hunter Valley Semillon 2024 (KSL 2338)
Region: Hunter Valley Rating: 94/100CC
{secret winemaker} has established himself as one of the Hunter Valley's leading winemakers, crafting exciting Semillon (and more). The vines providing the fruit for this wine are from a vineyard on Lovedale Road, and sources for Hunter Sem don't come much more famous than that. The colour here is a very pale straw. Still very young, there is a scintillating freshness to this wine. The nose gives us a touch of grapefruit, with spices and florals. Imagine a sea breeze blowing through an orchard of lemon blossoms. There is a seductive texture here, with balance and bright acidity. It should continue to improve and excite over the next ten to twelve years. Delicious now, it would be ideal for freshly caught seafood. Price: $28. Rating: 93/100.

Tyrrells Vat 9 Shiraz 2019
Region: Hunter Valley Rating: 97/100C
A reversion to delicacy. An homage to a noble past of sappy, savoury Hunter Burgundy, as it was once known. With this, there has been an adoption of larger-format oak, less agitation, and with that, superior tannin management. The result, sappy, floral, detailed and dangerously drinkable. Violet, dark cherry, clove, licorice straps and a sachet of spice. Yet the texture is the totem. And it is sumptuous. Closure: screwcap. Drink: 2034. Rating: 95/100.

"One of the most captivating wines in the country", Toni Paterson
This is a landmark vintage
What makes Margaret River wines so captivating? It’s the region’s blend of Mediterranean climate and some of Earth’s oldest, gravelly soils. These unique conditions give rise to grapes that ripen slowly and evenly, developing harmonious acidity and exciting flavour complexity. The result: elegant, expressive wines with pure fruit character and a bright natural freshness.
Home for over 200 wineries, and responsible for some of the world’s best wines, Margaret River is celebrated for its signature Cabernet Sauvignon, with its enchanting aromatics, deep berry flavours, and poised structure—and for its Chardonnay, vibrant and complex, expressing both power and restraint. The region also enchants with lively blends of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc, graceful Shiraz, and a host of other varietals, all crafted by passionate winemakers who balance tradition with curiosity.

Howard Park Margaret River Chardonnay 2023
Region: Margaret River Rating 96/100CC
This is a cracking good chardonnay. A little winemaking involvement with battonage, wild yeast fermentation, time on lees and a mix of different format oaks has worked well with the intensity of the fruit. The nose is quite beautiful with aromas of nectarine and white peach with an edgier grapefruit nuanced in the background. The palate shows delightful texture but there is a minerally character that threads with purpose through to a very long finish. Nice spicy touch adds the final flourish. Price: $66. Rating: 96/100.

Cullen Kevin John Chardonnay 2024
Region: Margaret River
Rating: 98/100CC
It was a hot, dry and early vintage. The earliest on record. But the impact on the wine is immediate and profound. A wine of tremendous power and concentration is evident from the initial engagement on the nose through to a deep and almost endless palate, as it drives forward with tremendous urgency. Notes of brioche and grain-like cereal with a slightly honeycomb factor, with other notes of minerals and slight savoriness. The palate is deeply concentrated with layers of flavour emerging. Captures much of the Kevin John DNA. Rating: 98/100

Rating: 95/100CC
Wow, this is a mighty good wine for $40. There is real class here from whichever way you look at it. The aromas are a minerally sea spray and light citrus experience that are so engaging. The energy and bright chalky acidity is a feature which is a result of no malolactic fermentation. But the texture has been built in with regular lees stirring. It results in a pure and so precise linear palate feel with a lift and energy through to the finish. Cellar 7 years. Price: $40. Rating: 95/100.

If you were sitting quietly in a corner, contemplating the vicissitudes of life, and a glass of this exceptional chardonnay came your way, well, all would be very well indeed. And you'd perk up. It's a wine that tends to be scintillating in youth, driven by all manner of citrus flavours - lemon, pink grapefruit with a dash of lime but also a mille-feuille of leesy lusciousness, oak spices and a moreish savouriness. An impressive Cabernet Sauvignon from a season which produced wines of power and volume with a firm structure. This is all of that. The typical blackcurrant aromas are augmented with sweet plummy nuances. The palate is tightly framed with firm tannins and a decent oak influence from the 40% new French oak contribution. Okay. I've tasted every one of the Diana Madeline vintages, and I can say absolutely that I have never had a better one than this. Opens with a highly scented perfume that lifts exotically from the glass. Then notes of bay leaf and black olive fill out a little before more ethereal notes of violet and glazed cherry emerge. The palate carries the typical firm thread of tannin that marks the style, but there is a warm wrap of fleshy, succulent fruit. Structured and vibrant with an underlying energy. It's a Bordeaux blend named after Compte de Rosily who surveyed much of the west coast of W. A.. Made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot grown in the heart of Wilyabrup. Bigger and richer than usual this vintage and offering a strong core of gorgeous flavour. Matured for 18 months in small French oak barrels (35% new) but already well integrated with the fruit. Overall, there's seems to be more restraint with the reds from '23, a lovely cooler vintage, although this still gets 25% new oak and was aged 18 months. Yet the fruit has taken it all in. Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon 2022
Region: Margaret River Rating: 98/100CC
This was a very good vintage in Margaret River after the slightly more challenging '21. This has the refined elegance and prettiness that is the Moss Wood DNA. The colour is quite pale compared to some previous vintages, but don't be fooled into thinking this is some shrinking violet. Violets, yes, but plenty more in an engine room that is balanced and poised as the tannins and almost lyrically laid oak harness the exquisitely bright fruit. So well balanced. A wine of immense charm and appeal. I defy you to stop after the first sip. Price; $176. Rating: 98/100.

Australian Pinot Noir has emerged as one of the most captivating expressions of the variety outside its traditional European heartland. Across the country from Tasmania, the cool valleys of Victoria’s Yarra and Mornington Peninsula, and the rolling Hills of Adelaide, a new generation of winemakers has crafted Pinot Noir that displays vibrant fruit, earth and spice, with multiple layers of personality.
These wines reflect not just the diversity of place, but the energy and commitment of their creators. These pinots display the approachability and complexity we expect of the variety, and at best or them will reward cellaring. It’s a wine made to be enjoyed, shared, and remembered.

Pinot Noir 2024
Region: Southern Tasmania
Rating: 95/100C
A lively Pinot Noir from the talented Hughes brother in Tasmania. Even James Halliday called them "an utterly exceptional wine producer". Lets get a bit technical. The wine is made from fruit sourced from vineyards in the Coal River (15%) and Derwent (75%) Valleys, along with the North West (8%) and Channel (2%) regions. It is predominantly whole berry (8% whole bunch), fermented with natural yeast, and held on skins for 16-21 days. The wine is then pressed directly to oak (6% new) for maturation and bottled unfined and unfiltered. It's a great drink and remarkable value, all things considered. There just aren't many Pinots at this price from the Apple Isle that will deliver the interest and satisfaction of the Hughes & Hughes.

THREE TOP TASSIES
Forged by crisp Antarctic breezes, ancient soils, and long summer days, Tasmania is Australia’s undisputed heartland for wines of purity, elegance, and intense flavour. Tassie’s cool climate is nature’s perfect platform for crafting world-class expressions of classic varieties.
Think Pinot Noir with haunting perfume, silken texture, and vibrant red fruit; Chardonnay boasting crystalline acidity, complex minerality, and subtle power; Sauvignon Blanc that’s racy, textural, and layered with citrus and herbs, far removed from its brasher cousins; and Riesling redolant with lime zest, floral notes, and tension, promising remarkable longevity.
Bream Creek Vineyard
Founded by visionary Fred Peacock on Tasmania’s wild southeast coast, Bream Creek is a story of maritime resilience. Fred’s pioneering spirit lives in every bottle, such as the vibrant, lime-zest Riesling and earthy-yet-elegant Pinot Noir, both echoing the wind, waves, and bright sunshine of this rugged coastal haven.
Bream Creek Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2024
Region: Eastern Tasmania

Tasmania's cool southeast coast is home to some of the island's most distinctive wines, and Bream Creek's Sauvignon Blanc has long been a quiet achiever in that mix. We really enjoy discovering Savvy's far removed from the herbaceous Marlborough style. Classic varietal aromas of passionfruit, gooseberry, and lime zest, along with subtle hints of freshly cut grass (all in moderation). On the palate, it's crisp and refreshing, offering zesty citrus flavors, green apple, and tropical fruits, balanced by a bright acidity. The wine's minerality and clean, long finish make it a perfect match for seafood, salads, and light vegetarian dishes, or simply to enjoy on its own as a refreshing aperitif.

The palate is silky and medium bodied with concentrated red fruit, fine tannins, and a savoury edge that lingers through a long, mineral finish. Rosé wines are celebrated for their vibrant colour, refreshing taste, and remarkable versatility. Crafted chiefly from many red grape varieties, rosé achieves its signature pink hue by allowing grape skins brief contact with the juice—typically just a few hours—resulting in a lighter colour and a fruit-forward, crisp profile that sits between white and red wines.
Whether enjoyed as a chilled aperitif or paired with a variety of dishes, rosé’s approachable style and spectrum of flavors make it a favorite for any occasion.

Plenty of sparkly oomph and bubbly action here, which is just what we like to see in a youthful prosecco. Clean, brisk and summery in shades of citrus - lemon and grapefruit pith - with red apple and tart quince, it rollicks and rolls along at a fast pace. Delicious. Alcohol: 10%.

This is a prosecco that just fly’s out the door. Almost unbelievably they make 6 different Proseccos. The question on everyone's lips - who is Billy Button? If you were a botanist you would know that this name belongs to the bouncy yellow balls of goodness that colour the mountain tops of the Alpine Valleys. These flowers (Craspedia to be precise) are a native daisy and create a sea of yellow during the warmer months, blanketing the mountains of the Alpine Valleys region. Bubbles for any occasion. A bright Prosecco with loads of fruit and a balanced fresh palate!

Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grapes are selected from a range of premium cool climate vineyards in Yarra Valley. Bright and fresh aromas of apple sorbet, orchard blossoms and lemon zest sit alongside subtle brioche and fresh sourdough characters. The palate leads with classic Chardonnay pear flavour. Gently creamy texture, zesty acidity and complex hints of nougat lead to a long, dry and refreshing finish. A complex and balanced sparkling wine, produced true to the methode champenoise style with a nod to the esteemed Moet & Chandon Maison. Classic Chandon Brut in very good form. Kemenys
An estate blend of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier made in the "methode champenoise" true to this Estate's French origins. Pale pink hues across a straw green colour with very fine and persistent bubbles. Green & red apple notes emerge through baked bread characters, indicative of a complex sparkling wine. The lively palate is driven by a fresh acidity, which lingers harmoniously with the confection and aged complexity. Extraordinary value.

From delicate Blanc de Blancs and elegant rosés to expressive vintage blends, Champagne sets the global benchmark for celebration and luxury wine. Born from the legendary vineyards of northern France, Champagne dazzles with its tiny, persistent bubbles and its irresistible sense of occasion.
Champagne is crafted from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Meunier grapes and produced in the traditional méthode champenoise, creating complexity and finesse, resulting in styles that range from crisp Brut Nature to rich and subtly sweet Demi-Sec wines.

Champagne Deutz Brut Classic NV
Region: Champagne
Rating: 94/100C
Deutz cuvees only reappeared in the Australian market in 2022 (not sure why). Brut Classic is the barometer of Deutz, representing 80% of the volume of production, and the house gives it first priority. Champagne expert Tyson Stelzer says "this is the quintessential, refreshing aperitif, presenting an engaging contrast between the presence and volume of red apple and strawberry fruits of pinot, the racy tension of lemon and grapefruit of chardonnay, and the complexity of bottle age in nuances of nougat, brioche and honey. It finishes fine and long, with well-integrated dosage and gentle chalk minerality. There is presence and flesh here, well presented in the vivacious and subtle style that defines the signature of Deutz".

Veuve Fourny Grands Terriors
Brut Premier Cru NV
Region: Champagne
Rating: 96/100CC
The real excitement in Champagne is from the small artisan producers especially in Cotes des Blanc. Charles and Emmanuel Fourny from Vertus are at the forefront of that excitement. Grands Terriors is a blend of 80% chardonnay and 20% pinot noir/pinot meunier (40% reserve wine from previous vintages). It is a champagne of precision and purity. Wine critic Huon Hooke says "the style is chardonnay driven but very complex, with some aldehydes in a nutty, appley bouquet of great depth and complexity. It's nervy, taut and refined in the mouth with lip smacking tang". In the landscape of champagne this is true artisan champagne at a great price.

Collet Extra Brut Premier Cru NV
Region: Champagne
Rating: 96/100CC
This assemblage is based on a meticulous selection of 20 Crus from the Premiers and Grands Crus of the Champagne region. According to the champagne house itself the cuvee Extra Brut Premier Cru "brings out its best charms when paired with iodised dishes such as the famous oyster basket". The best champagnes to match with oysters are dry. This has just 3 grams/litre "liqueur d'expedition" - it is dry but avoids austerity. It also benefits from 20% older reserve wines as well as long ageing on lees which brings length, power and richness of red fruit. Very good value when compared to the big name champagne brands at a similar price.

Rating: 96/100CC
There is no other non-vintage champagne as recognizable as that of Bollinger's 'Special Cuvee'. It is distinct, rich and powerful - often thought of as the 'red-wine drinkers' Champagne. Benchmark Bollinger, fresh and vivacious, yet wonderfully resonant with all the depth and triumphant complexity that set Special Cuvee apart. A universe of complexity spans light years of black cherries, plums, fresh lemon zest, red apple, even the richness of ripe peach and fig. Champagne expert Tyson Stelzer calls it "one of the finest entry NVs on the planet". It is even James Bond's Champagne of choice.

First made in 1962 and has lasted the test of time. Whilst the a region is famed for red wines, it also produces high quality Riesling. Lean fresh notes of citrus, white florals and sherbet. Lemon pith and subtle spice notes lend a hint of complexity. The palate is fresh and open with bright acidity, crunchy granny smith apple flavours, lime, grapefruit, and softer lemon curd notes. Taylors are one of Australia's great wine families. Their philosophy is "we rest on the principle that the finest wines are those made with the greatest dedication and care. Above all our imperative is to 'respect the fruit'" - an so it is evident with their Estate Shiraz. Demand has meant that the fruit is now sourced from both Clare Valley and Limestone Coast but the quality has remained. A thoroughly delicious young Shiraz delivering so much for this price. It's generous but more in the medium bodied zone with plenty of juicy red berry fruits, plum and spice, along with subtle chocolate and savoury characters from the oak maturation.

Juicy dark fruits fill the palate, with a touch of oak that supports but doesn't dominate, allowing the dark fruit to show its full potential. Te Mata Estate Awatea Cabernets Merlot 2023
Region: Hawkes Bay Rating: 96/100CC
From arguably New Zealand's greatest producer of Bordeaux blends (and of course, Coleraine which many rate as New Zealand's greatest wine). A blend 44% Merlot, 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 14% Cabernet Franc, sourced from Te Mata's historic estate vineyards established in 1896. First made in 1982, Awatea continues to represent the best of the classic Hawke's Bay cabernet/ merlot blend. Floral aromas with intense blackberry, currant and dark plum flavours lead to a rich, supple palate with a sustained finish. This is a wine of balance, length and appeal, with the clear ability to evolve even further in bottle. Often described as a baby Coleraine.

Xanadu Estate Chardonnay 2023
Region: Margaret River Rating: 95/100CC
Wow, this is a mighty good wine for $40. There is real class here from whichever way you look at it. The aromas are a minerally sea spray and light citrus experience that are so engaging. The energy and bright chalky acidity is a feature which is a result of no malolactic fermentation. But the texture has been built in with regular lees stirring. It results in a pure and so precise linear palate feel with a lift and energy through to the finish. Cellar 7 years. Price: $40. Rating: 95/100.

Holm Oak Estate Pinot Noir 2024
Region: Northern Tasmania
Rating: 95/100CC
The colour is a light crimson pink, but don't let that fool you. This is a Pinot of great poise and structure with deep and layered intensity. The aromas are all about dark cherry with a little spicy raspberry lift. The palate is soft, sublimely supple and gradually opens to reveal a complex maze of strawberry, truffle and spice. And on top of that, you won't find many better Pinots for this price. A cracker. Date tasted: Feb 2025. Drink: 2025-2033. Price: $40. Rating: 95/100.

Cirillo 1850 Ancestor Vine Semillon 2018
Region: Barossa Valley Rating: 96/100CC
What can we say about this wine? Not anything more profound than wine critic Ken Gargett (Winepilot.com) has said. Ken says "There is a collection of old vines deep in the Barossa Valley, which might be the oldest known semillon vineyard in the world. That's right, a piece of living wine history at our doorstep. Historically Barossa Semillon distinguished itself from the Hunter Valley as a ripe and fuller style with pronounced oak influence. Marco Cirillo opts for freshness and harvests the grapes earlier from his ancient vines for a crisp acid line. The result speaks for itself... a bargain for the price and an affordable special occasion wine! Especially considering how meaningful those 1850 vines are for Australian wine! And...it will only get better in the cellar!".

Atlas Wines 172 Degrees Watervale Riesling 2024
Region: Watervale Rating: 95/100CC
Lime, green apple, a lemongrass and bath salts perfume. It's crisp, has excellent energy, a fair burst of classic Watervale Riesling intensity and flavour, crunch and flinty bits, cool and balanced 'mineral' acidity, and outstanding length of flavour, closing with a lime and tonic sorbet richness. This is a bit of a banger. Top shelf. Alcohol: 12%. Closure: screwcap. Date tasted: August 2025. Drink: 2025-2038+. Price: $40. Rating: 95/100.

Stylish and complex, the enticing bouquet shows dark plum, raspberry, warm spice, mushroom and toasted almond characters, leading to a wonderfully weighted palate offering fleshy texture, backed by finely infused tannins, finishing persistent and elegant. Gorgeously poised and harmonious with seductive complexity. At its best: now to 2033. Price: $39. Rating: 95/100.
Exquisite and pure, the delicately lifted bouquet shows green apple, lime sorbet, and white floral aromas with a hint of wet limestone. It's concentrated and refined in the mouth, offering a great line and length. Wonderfully composed and styled with splendid structure and harmony. At its best: 2028 to 2040. Price: $24. Rating: 95/100.
Yes we are pure Cabernet territory, no mistaking that on the nose and nor should we. Here you'll find cassis, squished mulberries and poppy seed. Its dark spices provide a plethora of intrigue. Some pencil lead and cold tea tannins, it's really quite straight down the line with fruit the focus and tight knit tannins ensuring it stands tall and mighty. A stoic wine. Price: $75. Rating: 95/100.
This wine deserves a quiet place and a swirl in a decanter, unlike its Bordeaux siblings, this wine isn't yelling but speaking softly and with conviction. Plummy with boysenberry and mulberry leaf tones. There are chocolate foundation aromas mixed with coffee, nutmeg and cinnamon dust. It moves with a real sauntering pace that drifts across the palate. It's juicy and lush with silken tannins. Certainly up there with some of the top Aussie merlots, perhaps more fruit weighted than oak driven than most, drinking well now and still has 3-5 years to evolve. Price: $75. Rating: 95/100. Shanteh Wale, Winepilot.com
This continues the lineage of bright aromatics, snappy freshness and considerable detail established by the estate release. There is simply more depth, clarity of blue-fruit allusions and greater spicy complexity on show, with whiffs of cardamon, star anise, dill and mezcal suggestive, too, of some whole bunches in the fray. A backbone of fibrous tannins runs out the impressive finish. Alcohol: 14%. closure; screwcap. Date tasted: Jan 2023. Drink: 2022-2029. Price: $45. Rating: 94/100.
