IN THIS EDITION THE LEGACY CONTINUES

“Come quickly, I am tasting the stars!” so supposedly the visionary Benedictine monk Dom Pérignon said on realising the wine he had made was a sparkling marvel. Today, Dom Pérignon remains the pinnacle of luxury and craftsmanship in Champagne.

Dom Pérignon is vintage only. In the darkness of the cellars, inside the bottles, each vintage goes through a slow transformation in contact with the yeast. It takes no fewer than eight years of elaboration to reach a harmonious dialogue between the character of the year and the signature of Dom Pérignon.

Like No Other

The Wine Spectator Champagne Vintage chart rates the 2015 vintage in Champagne the highest in quality since 2012 and until 2018, so it is an excellent year.

Dom Pérignon Vintage 2015 stands out with its soothing strength and striking tactile presence.

Aromatic Brilliance: Dom Pérignon 2015 stands out for its complex aromatic flavour profile combining intense roasted and cocoa notes, balanced by delicate floral aromas of lime blossom, jasmine and peony.

Palate Harmony: Dom Pérignon 2015 is characterised by its breadth and delicacy, offering a unique sensory experience. Notes of peach, nectarine, citrus and gentian create a harmonious blend, giving the wine a rich texture and a diverse aromatic palate.

Textural Signature: Dom Pérignon 2015 envelops the palate with a tactile, almost architectural sensation—straight, luminous, and unforgettable.

International Acclaim

Dom Pérignon Vintage 2015 has received widespread international acclaim. These international wine critics use a tougher scoring system than often applied by Australian critics. As an example, James Suckling’s scoring system is that a wine rated 90 points or more is outstanding (A). A wine rated 95 points or more (A+) is a must buy.

James Suckling: 97 points – “Super-complex Champagne with chewy tension... Zesty yet integrated chewy acidity and a medium body with a toasted finish”

Vinous.com : 96 points – “The Dom Pérignon 2015 is terrific. Bright and poised, the 2015 shows terrific energy. Citrus peel, white flowers, mint, white pepper and slate all race across the palate. There's gorgeous tension and backbone here”

Jeb Dunnuck: 96 points – “Expressive and layered...Rounded, ripe, but very well-detailed with a soft, chalky texture. This was a very successful vintage for Dom Perignon, producing wines that retain a great deal of clarity and detail in this warm vintage”

Robert Parker: 95 points – “This iteration of Dom Perignon, though replete with the customary charm and vinous generosity that typify the label, distinguishes itself by its structural delicate austerity and a notably phenolic profile, giving rise to a remarkably linear and well-defined style that diverges markedly from the more familiar expressions of Dom Perignon”

Perfect Pairings

Dom Pérignon 2015 shines alongside refined dishes—think shellfish, crab, lobster, or delicate cheeses—elevating every occasion into a celebration.

Super impressive results for the entry point to Majella’s offering of Connawarra cabernets. The Composer is a vivid dark magenta red with a bright crimson hue. Lush eucalyptus and red fruit aromas lead into a vibrant, flavour-filled palate of cassis and red berries. Subtle oak integration enhances the smooth and balanced finish. Top value cabernet drinking that would be ideal with roast lamb, grilled meats, or a hearty pasta dish.

Crafted from estate-grown fruit on the region’s famed terra rossa soils, this is one of Majella’s flagship reds - a blend that captures both the finesse of Cabernet and the plush depth of Shiraz, in perfect balance. It opens with an intense mix of blackcurrant, plum, and dark cherry, layered with cocoa, cedar, bay leaf and a hint of cigar box. On the palate, it’s full-bodied and opulent, with velvety tannins, integrated oak, and a long finish that hums with black fruit, spice and earthy complexity. It’s rich, but never heavy-just beautifully put together.

In 1968 George Patrick Lynn, Patriarch of the Lynn family allowed his sons Brian and Anthony to plant vines on there family’s Coonawarra property “Majella”. The vineyard prospered, more vines were planted and eventually, a winery was built and Majella Wines as we now know it as was established. George passed away in 1976 aged only 50, but in his memory, the family produces the Majella “GPL68”. A perfect interplay of fruit, savouriness, and seamless oak. Italy’s winemaking heritage is as diverse as its landscapes, with each region imparting its own character and tradition to the wines it produces. This selection brings together celebrated bottles from some of Italy’s most renowned wine regions:

From the sun-soaked plains of Manduria in Puglia, known as the spiritual home of the Primitivo grape, you’ll find robust reds shaped by ancient vineyards and a climate ideal for rich, intense wines.

The Salento peninsula, also in southern Puglia, offers wines crafted from indigenous varieties like Negroamaro, thriving in the region’s hot, dry terroir between the Adriatic and Ionian seas.

Heading north, the rolling hills of the Langhe in Piedmontrecognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site-are famed for their picturesque vineyards and deeprooted winemaking traditions, producing expressive and elegant reds.

Tuscany’s Chianti region, nestled between Siena and Florence, is steeped in history and protected winemaking practices, yielding wines that are quintessentially Italian and reflective of the area’s unique terrain.

The Colli Berici hills in the Veneto region, with their distinctive soils and climate, contribute to structured, age-worthy reds that showcase the northern character of Italian viticulture.

Each of these regions brings a unique story and flavor profile to the table, offering a journey through Italy’s most iconic wine landscapes.

Bericanto Gran Bericanto Rosso

Riserva Colli Berici DOC 2018

Region: Friuli-Venezia Giulia

Rating: 97/100CC

Bericanto has sourced the cabernet and merlot for this Italian red blend from Bericishire (a gentle hilly area between Vicenza and Verona, on the footsteps of the Alps). Intense garnet red colour, the nose features fragrant aromas of cassis and blackberry with hints of vanilla. With the acid vein that sustains, the tannin that weaves and the pulp of fruit that everything harmoniously wraps and contains, the mouthfeel is majestic with notes of cherries, clove, licorice, sweet tannins and long finish.

Rating: 94/100CC

A blend of 80% Negroamaro and 20% Primitivo sourced from Puglia, Italy’s sun-soaked heel. Ruby red with orange reflections. Intense and complex with notes of ripe fruit and spices. The dried fruit sweetness is there, but it’s not overwhelming-think ripe berries, a bit of cherry jam, and some hints of warm spice from that gentle oak. The finish is fresh and clean, leaving you wanting another glass.98 points by Italian wine critic Luca Maroni seems a bit over enthusiastic.

Masso Antico Salento

Negroamaro 2021

Region: Puglia

Rating: 95/100CC

Masso Antico is acclaimed for their eclectic, modern and approachable takes on traditional Puglia wine varietals. Winemakers, Daniele Ress and Carlo Filippi use only the best indigenous Mediterranean fruits found in Puglia. Top of our list is their Negroamaro from the Salento peninsula of Puglia. A dark-skinned grape that dates back to Roman antiquity - it is known as the 'King of Salento'. Brilliant red with purple undertones. Powerful blackberry and plum bouquet. Soft tannins, well-balanced and round. Enduring, rich finish. Rated 96 points by Italian wine critic Luca Maroni who says "a great wine". It would be great to share it with friends and family over a meal.

Rating: 95/100CC

The Barbera D’Alba DOC is located in Italy’s north-western region of Piedmont. A 97 point rating from Italian wine critic Luca Maroni and a gold medal at the Berlin International Wine Competition caught our eye. We weren’t disappointed. It is rarity to see an Italian red rated 98 points by Luca Maroni in his annual Italian wine guide at this price. Manduria is primitivo’s spiritual home and the Cielo Gran Maestro is a benchmark in the style. A brooding intense garnet red in the glass. Region: Abruzzo

Rating: 97/100CC

When influential Italian wine critic Luca Maroni rated this his highest rating of 99 points (he doesn’t give 100/100) we just had to try it. Wow! Straw yellow colour with greenish highlights. Aromas of white pulp fruit, especially pears, and balsamic notes. On the palate it shows excellent intensity and concentration with a full body. Whilst it’s a crisp aromatic, white to be enjoyed in its youth (yet a slash of oak adds to its complexity and age worthiness. This would make a fantastic (and highly interesting) match with a lobster or roast chicken.

Prestige Rosé NV Region: Champagne Rating: 96/100C

A Champagne Rose of strong character. It starts with the colour, a rather deeper salmon-pink than the very pale hue that’s currently fashionable. A quantity of still red wine (15%) produced from the best Pinot Noirs from Montagne de Reims and Les Riceys is in fact added to the final blend, to give this cuvee its unmistakable colour and vibrant intensity on the palate. The flavours are reminiscent of fresh, crisp red fruits.

Huon Hooke, The Real Review

The sound of a popping cork is a wellknown signal that there’s something to celebrate.

Sparkling wines are enjoyed all over the world. The most famous sparkling wine is of course Champagne, but there are many others that are made in the same way using a process known as Méthode Traditionnelle.

The process starts with a dry base wine with no bubbles. To make the wine bubbly, it is bottled with a small amount of yeast and sugar. Within the bottle, the yeast ferments the sugar, and in so doing creates a little more alcohol and, crucially some carbon dioxide. As the bottle is sealed tight, there’s nowhere for the gas to go so it creates that famous sparkle. The longer that wine rests on contact with yeast, the more exaggerated the flavours become.

All of the best sparklings are made through this method and many are equal in quality but lower in price than Champagne. Clover Hill is one of Australia’s very few premium sparkling houses solely producing sparkling wines in the traditional method.

The Charmat or tank method is a more cost effective sparkling production method. It involves a second fermentation in large, pressurized stainless steel tanks rather than individual bottles.

This method is ideal for making lighter styles of sparkling such as Prosecco (which is also more affordable).

Australia, like Italy, enjoy socialising and relaxing with friends and family around food and drink - prosecco is an ideal light and refreshing drink to enjoy with friends.

Charles Heidsieck Brut Reserve NV (375ml)

Region: Champagne

Rating 93/100

It’s astounding to think that The House of Henriot has been in the same family for over 200 years. Mostly drawing from Premier Cru and Grand Cru villages. the chardonnay-dominant champagne is precise and elegant. Brut Souverain appeals with its nose of white flower and citrus fruit notes, then with a elegant, harmonious palate. An ideal aperitif. IN THE PINK

Rosé wines are celebrated for their vibrant colour, refreshing taste, and remarkable versatility.

Crafted chiefly from many red grape varieties, rosé achieves its signature pink hue by allowing grape skins brief contact with the juice—typically just a few hours—resulting in a lighter colour and a fruit-forward, crisp profile that sits between white and red wines.

Whether enjoyed as a chilled aperitif or paired with a variety of dishes, rosé’s approachable style and spectrum of flavors make it a favorite for any occasion.

Raw cocoa and the gentle and subtle creep of game/gristle/blood and sweet marrow indicate its direction later in life. I love this wine. I think I write that every time I taste it. Rating: 98/100.

Deep ruby-red colour, still youthful in the light. Ripe mulberry, cola and crushed violets on the nose. A powerful palate with purple berry intensity but it's remarkable in its sense of poise at the same time. Acidity gives lift and fine tannins offer drive: it sits with a deftness of touch. A bright, lively, fruit-driven wine with dominant aromas of raspberry, cherry and mint chocolate, with hints of violet and toasted almonds. Juicy dark fruits fill the palate, with a touch of oak that supports but doesn't dominate, allowing the dark fruit to show its full potential. It is one of Barossa’s most highly regarded wineries who is the custodian of the oldest Mourvedre (aka Mataro) vines in the world. The owner of the Estate and winemaker is affectionately known in wine circles as the Mad Hatter. He has a passion for creating new and exciting wines from much loved ancestral vineyards – inspired by the old world but with a new world twist.

From the many small parcels of fruit that the winery takes in from their grower’s and own vineyards there is always a stand-out. That parcel will spend time maturing in French oak, before a final barrel selection. The final wine is always very special - the best the winery can make. A whopping $450 a bottle at cellar door. Available from Kemenys for $59.99 a bottle – 87% off!

Immensely complex and perfumed, the bouquet presents black and blueberry, violet, tapenade, star anise, and stylish oak characters. The concentrated palate exhibits exceptional depth and weight, wonderfully framed by velvety texture and finely infused tannins. It is opulent and substantial, yet refined and harmonious, with a persistent and gratifying finish. Gorgeously proportioned and balanced, ensuring its gracious development. Closure: Cork. The name comes from the address of the winery, 66 Seppeltsfield Road. Every year, the team will see a really exciting batch of Shiraz - it may be from estate vineyards or from a top grower - which demands attention. It will spend time maturing in French oak, before a final barrel selection. The final wine is always very special. Under cork. The colour is an opaque magenta. The lifted aromatics are a touch thrilling and there are notes of plums, spices, chocolate, tobacco leaves, aniseed, black fruits and coffee grinds. The oak integration has been deftly handled. This is a class effort. The palate sees the emergence of notes of soy, cloves and blackberries. There is fine balance, impressive length and the finest of tannins. HEAD WINES

20 years of outstanding wines from Alex Head

Alex began his journey twenty vintage ago in the Barossa, with three growers in support. Over the last two decades, HEAD Wines has grown to a network of over 25 dedicated small growers, allowing for a diverse selection of vineyard sites, vine ages and elevation levea to craft his eponymous wines.

Inspited by the Rhone, Alex makes elegant interpretations of the Barossa & Eden Valleys, qith a clear focus on crafting delicilously balanced wines that age beautifully over time.

Energised by the fresher, lighter styles of old-world wines, Alex is always one of the first winemakers to commence picking harvest each year in the Barossa, as he actually seeks a fresher fruit profile. Organic management principals in the vineyard are coupled with responsible winemaking and an adherence to minimal intervention approcah; HEAD Wines are not manipulated during the winemaking process to create wines that are true to site and vintage.

Wines that are both cerebral and a joy to drink - today and into the next 20 years.

Head Red Shiraz 2022

Region Barossa Valley Rating: 93/100C

A rather large jigsaw puzzle of 10 very unique Barossa vineyards are used for Head Red Shiraz. They mostly come from the higher altitude, rocky, cooler sites of the Eden Valley. In the winery there is very little 'fancy' winemaking. There's a richness and grand texture in the mid palate, with some aromatic prettiness (from co-fermentation with 1% viognier). Alex Head says that "he adores blending this wine as it is a chance for me to play with the old adage, that 'the whole is greater than the sum of its parts".

Originally from France, Malbec found its ultimate expression in the sundrenched landscapes of Argentina and is now crafting exciting, distinct styles in Australia. This robust red grape produces deeply coloured wines brimming with dark fruit character and ripe tannins.

Argentina, particularly the high-altitude vineyards of Mendoza (like Luján de Cuyo and the Uco Valley), is Malbec's spiritual home. Here, intense sunlight, cool nights, and arid conditions create wines that define the bold, New World style. Expect generous, velvety textures saturated with vibrant flavours of ripe plum, blackberry, and blueberry. Signature notes of violets, cocoa, and mocha, often from oak ageing, add complexity. These are wines of sunshine, perfectly paired with Argentine asado (barbecue) or rich meat dishes.

Australian Malbec emanates from a plethora of regions and often reveals black cherry, subtle earthy notes, hints of pepper, liquorice, and savoury herbs (like sage or mint), resulting in a more complex and restrained expression compared to its Argentine counterpart. It excels with lamb roasts, duck, or mushroom-based dishes.

The key to the success of the Gaucho Club is the grape selection all from low yielding vineyards, at least 30 years old and above an altitude of 1000m (including 40% from the famous Uco Valley in the Andes mountains). Dense flavors of dark plum and chocolate, layered with toasted oak and a velvety finish that lingers. A great introduction to Argentinian malbec.

THE ART OF BLENDING

Australia’s red wine blends are a testament to centuries-old craftsmanship meeting bold innovation. By masterfully combining diverse grape varieties, our winemakers create symphonies in the glass—wines of unparalleled depth, balance, and character. Here’s why Australian red blends deserve a place in your cellar:

Australian blends weave together complementary profiles: the robust structure of Shiraz softens with Merlot’s silkiness, while Grenache adds vibrant red fruit and spice. This alchemy transforms individual components into layered, harmonious wines that evolve with every sip—where power meets elegance.

Pioneered by legends like Maurice O’Shea and Max Schubert (creator of Penfolds Bin 389), Australia’s blending tradition began with unlikely pairings like CabernetShiraz—now iconic for their bold yet refined profiles. Today, winemakers push boundaries with Mediterranean varieties like Tempranillo and Nero d’Avola, crafting climate-resilient wines without sacrificing depth

Their balanced acidity and tannins make blends exceptionally versatile. The harmony of components benefits everything from charcuterie to rich stews.

I'm not quite sure that I've tasted an Australian red wine quite like this. It's wine as an airstream. It would be a detective's nightmare; there are no fingerprints. It's light, joyous and delicious. NEW SOUTH WALES

New South Wales is home to some of Australia’s most diverse and celebrated wine regions, each offering unique terroir, climate, and varietal expressions. From the historic Hunter Valley to the cool-climate heights of Tumbarumba, Hilltops, Orange, and the Canberra District, NSW wines are renowned for their quality and character.

Australia’s oldest wine region, the Hunter Valley, lies just north of Sydney and is famed for its rolling hills, rich history, and innovative winemaking. The region is best known for its world-class Semillon—delicate and citrusy when young, developing complex toasty notes with age—as well as elegant Shiraz and iconic Chardonnay. The Hunter’s warm, humid climate is tempered by cloud cover and sea breezes, creating ideal conditions for these classic varieties. Sub-regions such as Pokolbin, Broke Fordwich, and Upper Hunter Valley each add their own nuance to the region’s wines.

Situated in the foothills of the Snowy Mountains, Tumbarumba is a cool, high-altitude region specializing in Chardonnay—for both still and sparkling wines. Its elevation ensures crisp acidity and freshness, making Tumbarumba a standout for lovers of refined, elegant coolclimate whites.

Hilltops is known for its red varieties, especially Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Orange region boasts vineyards at altitudes up to 1,390 meters, resulting in cool nights and naturally high-acid wines. Shiraz, Chardonnay, and Cabernet Sauvignon are the top varieties, with Orange also producing fresh Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc. The region’s cool climate and volcanic soils yield wines of finesse and aromatic intensity.

Straddling the border of NSW and the ACT, the Canberra District is defined by its altitude (500–800 meters), cool climate, and significant diurnal temperature range. The region excels with Pinot Noir, Riesling, Chardonnay, Shiraz, and Viognier, producing elegant wines with great aromatic lift and balance.

Wynns Coonawarra Estate is a prestigious Australian winery with a rich heritage dating back to 1891, when Scottish pioneer John Riddoch planted the first vines on the fertile terra rossa soils of the Coonawarra region. After a period of decline following Riddoch's death, the estate was revitalized in 1951 by Samuel and David Wynn, who transformed it into one of Australia's most celebrated wine producers, renowned especially for its Cabernet Sauvignon, but also excelling with Shiraz.

The estate's vineyards, situated on the unique red earth strip near the Southern Ocean, benefit from a cool climate and exceptional terroir, producing wines of great complexity and intensity. Wynns continues to combine traditional winemaking with modern techniques under the guidance of Chief Winemaker Sue Hodder, ensuring the production of expressive, age-worthy wines that reflect the best of the region.

In 2025, Wynns Coonawarra Estate proudly introduces the inaugural release of the Wynns Black Label Messenger Chardonnay 2024. This new addition comes from the Messenger Vineyard, planted in 1993 in the southern part of the Terra Rossa strip. The 2024 vintage enjoyed a mild to dry harvest, ideal conditions for crafting an elegant and textured Chardonnay with creamy notes, fine acidity, and vibrant flavours. This release marks an exciting expansion of Wynns' portfolio, showcasing their ability to produce outstanding white wines alongside their iconic reds.

Wynns John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 (Gift Boxed)

Region: Coonawarra

Rating: 99/100CC

Very deep, dark, impenetrable purple colour; a gorgeous fragrance of spicy super ripe berries and a hint of licorice, super concentrated and almost essency. Traces of soy sauce and nori. The wine is highly concentrated on the palate; powerful, profound and rich, with masses of sweetly ripe berry fruit and no sign of herbal varietal touches. It drinks superbly already but it would be sacrilege to open it before it's had more time to build the tertiary complexity that we know will come with time.

The Coonawarra wine region, located in South Australia's Limestone Coast, is internationally renowned for its exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon wines grown on its distinctive "terra rossa" soil—a thin, iron-oxide rich red earth over limestone that imparts unique purity and elegance to its wines.

Established in the late 19th century by Scottish settler John Riddoch, who first planted vines in 1890, Coonawarra experienced a renaissance in the 1950s when David Wynn recognized the potential of the region's terroir, leading to its rise as one of Australia's most prestigious wine-producing areas.

The region's cool maritime climate, influenced by cold ocean currents, combined with its long, cool ripening season, creates ideal conditions for producing medium to full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignons with rich, complemented by firm yet plush tannins that allow these wines to age gracefully for decades.

Alongside Cabernet, Shiraz and Merlot also thrive here, with Shiraz offering spicy, raspberry notes and often blended with Cabernet to create classic Coonawarra styles. High quality white wines also make their mark, particularly Chardonnay and Riesling.

Region: Minervois

Rating: 94/100CC

From selected vineyards in the classic area of the Minervois (western Languedoc in southern France) where Marsanne flourishes.100% Marsanne this is an unusually perfumed example of white wine from this region, with a creamy texture, appley, limey fruit and a lovely hint of floral perfume. The oak (15% matured in French barrels) sits subtly in the background. Freshly enjoyable by itself, this is perfect seafood wine but has enough character to match light red meat dishes.

There's a concentration of flavours without forcing any element, amplifying the attributes of a superior vintage. Effortless balance is achieved in this powerful wine. Rating: 96/100.
