AUTUMN 2025

Hardys HRB (Heritage Reserve Bin) brand is one of the best value for money brands out there, for both reds and whites." Huon Hooke, The Real Review (Feb, 2024)
History shows that Thomas Hardy first blended grapes from multiple regions in 1865. Hardy believed that blending grapes with different characteristics would complement and enhance the qualities of each region, so began Hardy's rich blending heritage. In more recent times, Hardys winemakers have mastered the art of blending, given free rein to carefully match the varietal attributes from elite vineyards in each region, creating classy wines of great complexity and character.
Our special offer on the Hardys Heritage Reserve Bin D690 Shiraz 2019 (cork closure) and 2020 (screwcap) and Hardys Heritage Reserve Bin D691 Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 (cork closure) and 2020 (screwcap).

Hardys Heritage Reserve Bin
D694 Shiraz 2020
Region: Multi regional
Rating: 95/100CC
A multi-regional blend here, with approximately 55% McLaren Vale and 45% Frankland River, this wine is under screw cap (the range varies back and forth between screw cap and cork). An inky maroon colour, there is serious intensity here. The nose reveals a range of fragrances - cold tea, black fruits, chocolate, blackberries and bacon fat.

"A rich and powerful wine", Jane Faulkner
Hardys Heritage Reserve Bin
D696 Cabernet Sauvignon 2020
Region: Multi regional Rating: 95/100CC
No mention of the percentage split between Margaret River and McLaren Vale, although the fragrance and fruit profile is definitely in the former camp. A rich and powerful wine, in a way, with so much on show - the cassis and mulberries, the tobacco and mint chocolate and a wave of cedary sweet oak. It's a full-bodied red with layers of tannins and detail.

Champagne, the quintessential luxury beverage, originates from the Champagne region in northern France. Its history dates back to the 5th century when the Romans first planted vineyards in the area. Over time, Champagne evolved from a still wine to a sparkling delight, thanks to the innovative techniques of influential figures such as Dom Perignon.
Champagne
Today, Champagne is renowned for its complex flavours and textural nuances, crafted using the traditional method, or méthode champenoise, which involves a secondary fermentation in the bottle. Only wines produced within this specific region can be labeled as "Champagne," ensuring the exclusivity and its place as the ultimate symbol of celebration and sophistication worldwide.

Laurent-Perrier
Cuvee Rosé NV
Region: Champagne Rating: 96/100C
Laurent-Perrier first released this rose in 1968, well before it became fashionable to have a pink-hued Champagne in the portfolio. Laurent-Perrier specifically picks pinot noir fruit from 10 crus for its famous rose. They famously draw its colour from skin contact (the more challenging saignee method) rather than the more usual addition of red wine. Beautiful smoked-salmon tone of pink. The bouquet complex and alluring. Generous, rich mouthfeel with cherry and strawberry flavours. Dry with a very long and satisfying finish. Rose was long regarded as the illegitimate offspring of champagne - not anymore. This is a serious and beautiful champagne rose.

Region: Champagne Rating: 96/100C
In 1818 Madame Cliquot invented the first known blended rose champagne. Made using 50 to 60 different crus and 30 to 45% Reserve wines. Pinot Noir (~55%) dominant provides the structure so typically Veuve Clicquot, Chardonnay (~33%) adds elegance and finesse, and a touch of Meunier (20%) rounds out the blend. The magic touch is that the blend is finished by adding parcels of red-wine grapes that brings depth and power on the palate. Champagne expert Tyson Stelzer says that "this is a lesson in what a difference 12% red wine can make in a blend, particularly in the hands of one of the finest red wine outfits in all of Champagne". Freshness, roundness, strength and depth - this is a joy to drink.

Yangarra Estate Vineyard Old Vine Grenache 2023
Region: McLaren Vale Rating: 97/100CC
From the estate's 1946-planted bush vines… matured in older French puncheons, foudre, ceramic eggs and amphorae. This is prettily lifted, with cherry, cranberry, rosehip, dried orange peel, wild raspberry and red florals. It's a gloriously fine and elegant expression of this cuvee, but it has tannic drive, line and length, savouriness, flavour depth and detail. Excellent. Alcohol: 14%. Closure: screwcap. Drink: 2024-2034. Price: $60. Rating: 96/100.

"Is this the best value red wine in Australia?",
Cirillo the Vincent Grenache 2023
Region: Barossa Valley Rating: 94/100C
Is this the best value red wine in Australia? It'd have to be up there at the pointy end. Grenache from a handful of vineyards; 1901 and 1906 plantings with some declassified 1850 vine fruit for good measure. That's just bonkers when you think about it. Magenta-splashed crimson, super high-toned, mid-weighted with crunchy red plum and red cherry fruits dusted with gingery spice, floral tones and cola. Savoury and crunchy and just delivers so much enjoyment for the price. A cracker. Alcohol: 14%. Closure; screwcap. Date tasted: Nov 2024. Drink: 2024-2034. Price: $25. Rating: 94/100.

Cirillo 1850 Ancestor Vine Grenache 2018
Region: Barossa Valley Rating: 97/100CC
This, I'll say up front, is a sensational wine, from the gnarled old Cirillo 1850 vines on the sands of Vine Vale. Deep and bright in the glass. There is more detail and aromatic amplitude here. Perfectly poised plum and berry fruits, ginger spice, turned earth, wild strawberries, cola and purple floral tones. There's depth and horsepower obviously present here but there is a freshness and sense of clarity to the proceedings that just draws you in. Superb length of flavour, too, finishing sapid and filigreed with uber-fine, compact, sandy tannins. A ripping release. Closure: screwcap. Alcohol: 14%. Date tasted: Nov 2024. Drink: 2024-2040. Kettmeir Pinot Grigio Alto Adige
DOC 2023
Region: Alto Adige Rating: 95/100C

This is an exhilarating pinot grigio. Bright straw yellow with scents of white fleshed fruit, such as pear and apple, with floral and citrus notes. Region: Abruzzo Rating: 97/100CC
When influential Italian wine critic Luca Maroni rated this his highest rating of 99 points (he doesn't give 100/100) we just had to try it. Wow! Straw yellow colour with greenish highlights. Aromas of white pulp fruit, especially pears, and balsamic notes. On the palate it shows excellent intensity and concentration with a full body. Whilst it's a crisp aromatic, white to be enjoyed in its youth (yet a slash of oak adds to its complexity and age worthiness. This would make a fantastic (and highly interesting) match with a lobster or roast chicken.

100% Marlborough with approximately 50% from Catalina's home Sound of White vineyard in the Waihopai Valley. A punchier nose than preceding years whilst maintaining the Catalina house style of delivering a textured and rich palate balanced with fruit precision and focus. Aromatically, the wine displays attractive grapefruit and white currant notes, with tropical fruits and crushed herbs in support and a perfectly balanced palate finishing refreshingly long and mouth watering. A go-to savvy for many.

Astrolabe Sauvignon
Blanc 2024
Stonefish Sauvignon Blanc 2024
Region: Margaret River Rating: 95/100CC
Stonefish has been around for decades but is somewhat under the radar. It has a significant presence in restaurants otherwise only available in a small selection of fine wine retail. This is an exciting Margaret River savvy in a style far removed from Marlborough. It was made by Bruce Dukes who is one of West Australia's star winemakers. Appealing mix of fresh tropical fruit, rockmelon, pineapple and white peach but nothing overly herbaceous. Its crisp and refreshing. It is wines like this that will see straight Margaret River sauvignon blanc continue to grow in popularity.

Region: Marlboroug Rating: 94/100C
A late-bloomer, this opens with lime blossom and citrus leaf before gaining more complexity on the palate. As the fruit expands across the palate, a balancing pithiness comes into play alongside tangy, fresh acidity and even a hint of salinity on the finish. Very well-judged and constructed, with lovely balance of herbaceousness with fruit and savouriness. Alcohol: 13.5%. Closure: screwcap. Drink: 2026. Rating: 93/100.

Blanc 2024
Region: Marlborough Rating: 95/100C
This is the 40th Vintage of New Zealand's famous sauvignon blanc. Restrained on the nose and less tropical than previous vintages, it reveals profound notes of citrus, lime leaf, apricot and orange blossom. The palate has mouthwatering intensity, with juicy passionfruit, citrus, white stone fruit, makrut lime, pink peppercorn, hibiscus and pink grapefruit. Throughout, there is a freshening saline edge and a fresh-squeezed lemon acidity that carries a long and complex finish. As polished as always!

AGED SEMILLON
Aged Semillon is a true gem among white wines, renowned for its remarkable transformation over time. This varietal is celebrated for its ability to evolve from a crisp, citrusy young wine into a rich, complex masterpiece with age. The Hunter Valley in Australia is particularly famous for its age-worthy
semillons, which develop flavours of honey, nuts, and toast while retaining bright acidity. However, semillon is also produced in other regions, including the Barossa Valley, where it often takes on a richer, fuller-bodied style, sometimes incorporating oak aging to enhance its texture and complexity.

Major trophies included the Best White Wine of the Show, Best Single Vineyard Wine and Best Single Vineyard White. Master of Wine, Ned Goodwin, tried it in 2021 saying "expansive, layered, intense and almost powerful in an uncanny way, despite the under-theradar low alcohol. Wonderful length. Very fine". Our tasting panel checked its journey in early 2025, it’s a wow wine.

Light-mid yellow colour; an intense bouquet of lemongrass, with subtle toastiness from bottle-age, while the palate is quite powerful, ample and dry, savoury and appetising yet also has a touch of richness less usual in this style of wine. Intense, tightly focused flavour creates a powerful palate impression and lasts long on the aftertaste. The lemon/lemongrass and savoury developed characters persist long after the wine has gone. "What a glorious expression of Clare Valley Shiraz", Jeni Port
O'Leary Walker Shiraz 2022
Region: Clare Valley Rating: 96/100CC
What a glorious expression of Clare Valley Shiraz. It's a wine that speaks of the land and the soil, of Aussie bush notes and earth, of bramble, blackcurrant, black cherry, peppercorns, liquorice, sage and warm clove oak. And that's just the wealth of aromas that explode in the glass after pouring. Boasts plenty of class all round, naturally fine featured, well integrated. The 14.5% alcohol might suggest a high degree of richness and weight, but it's deceptive. The Shiraz remains well within medium bodied territory in red plums, black cherry, bush notes and earth boasting an overall fineness. Tannin management, I would suggest, is the key here, bringing structure and suppleness. The result is a perfect balance. This can only be a plus as it ages... and it most certainly will age well. And look at that price! Outstanding value here. Date: July 2024. Drink: 2024-2032. Price: $40. Rating: 96/100. Jeni Port, Winepilot.com

Label Margaret River Chardonnay 2023 (KSL 1935)
Region: Margaret River Rating: 96/100CC
This super premium wine was introduced a few years ago and it hasn't looked back since. I think this is the best of them yet, which is not surprising given the quality of the '23 vintage. It's 50% Gingin clone with the remaining clones 95, 96 and 76 on their own roots. Pressed straight to oak with full solids and wild fermentation designed to generate the complexity and richness that is establishing a style after just a few vintages. It got 10 months in oak of which 1/3 was new. So it's not overdone with oak. It has an engaging minerally savoury character on the nose. The palate is creamy and rich, but the alternative clones bring a fine linear feel with waxy honeycomb and brioche adding complex notes. The finish is long and powerfully sustained. Drink: 20252037. Kilikanoon Killermans Run Riesling 2023
Region: Clare Valley Rating: 93/100C
Outstanding value here. Named after Mr Killerman who lived in a humble tin shed in the hills behind Kilikanoon and foraged through the valley for his meals, finding wild rabbit and many other gourmet treats. Intense lemon citrus with white flowers and tropical fruit notes. Bright, crisp and juicy, the palate is a concentrated array of lemon and citrus fruit. This is coupled by an undertone of lime cordial, green mango and slatey minerality. The finish is soft and seamless, with lemon-zest acidity keeping the wine fresh and youthful to the end.

Claymore Voodoo Child
Chardonnay 2024
Region: Clare Valley Rating: 92/100
Unfortunately, Claymore's ancient Chardy vines at Watervale got slammed by a black frost on October 2023. However, it’s good to have mates and Claymore has turned to grower friends for this small batch 2024 Chardonnay. Using their gnarly Chardy fruit they have crafted a generous, full flavoured Chardonnay awash with peach, dew-melon and subtle French oak spice. Partial malo-lactic adds texture and a morish softness in the mouth, this is wine for food. Think good old roast chook, butter slathered under the skin, stuffed with apricots, walnuts and herbs.

Secret Label Mount Benson Shiraz 2021 (KSL 1665)
Region: Mount Benson Rating: 95/100CC
Winemaker/vigneron {secret name} works two family vineyards in two regions, this from Mount Benson in SA's Limestone Coast, the vines cooled by the Southern Ocean just three kilometres away where the cold-water Bonney Upwelling is a serious temperature abating influence in the ripening season. So, this Shiraz is about cool-climate styling, dark, dark purple in the glass, fabulously aromatic to begin with crushed blue and black berry fruit and vibrant violet florals calling the shots. Once you're sipping, these remain full strength with notable intensity enhanced by attractive French oak spice and pert tannins, the underlying structure driving long finishing reverberations of all the good stuff that's come before. Over the years Langhorne Creek has produced some outstanding examples of this classic Australian red blend. The Terrier Shiraz/Cabernet Sauvignon tips its hat to these historic blends. Selected parcels of estate grown shiraz and cabernet from 60-year-old vines along with fruit sourced from our local growers. Deep red in colour and has some lifted floral, chocolate and dark fruit characters. It also shows some red fruit which compliments the Christmas cake like complexity and the slight mint, spice, and savory notes.

One of Australia's best value reds
Metala Single Vineyard Shiraz Cabernet 2022
Region: Langhorne Creek Rating: 93/100CC
Winning the first ever Jimmy Watson Trophy in 1962, Metala had stood the test of time. In 1882, William Formby purchased the Metala estate. In 1981, 5th Generation Guy Adams took over the management of the estate. With a sincere appreciation of the family legacy, Guy, together with his wife Liz, began a 20-year long battle to return Metala to its original home. In 2022 the dream became a reality and Metala came home to Langhorne Creek and the family who planted and have nurtured the vines for more than 130 years. This is now entirely sourced from the Metala Vineyard which is home to the oldest family-owned cabernet vineyard in the world and the oldest Shiraz vineyards in Langhorne Creek. Oodles of dark fruit flavour yet seamless. One of Australia's best value reds.

Surely a contender for value buy of the year. Indeed, the range of four reds released here is definitely odds on for best buying collection for 2023. Maroon purple, this is a brooding, deep red with aromas of plums, chocolate, cigar boxes, dry herbs and raspberries - the black fruits kick in much more on the palate. There is good density, but the wine retains its freshness. With very fine tannins and a lingering finish, this is utterly delicious and should remain so for at least the next six to eight years. The palate exhibiting more chocolate, axle grease and blackberries as it develops in the glass. Terrific stuff. Date tasted: July 2023. Drink: 2023-2031. Price: $25. Rating: 93/100.

This boutique winery is considered to be (along with Shaw + Smith) one of best producers of elegant, award-winning cool climate wines in the Adelaide Hills. It should be no surprise that their chardonnay is so highly regarded as their winemaker used to be the chief winemaker at Shaw + Smith. Tantalising aromas of jasmine and ripe lemon but with a round, velvety structure. The palate showcases crisp, mouthwatering flavours of grapefruit, apricot, and white peach, finishing with lingering, crisp minerality. Drinking beautifully now but will continue to evolve with careful cellaring. This is a bargain at its cellar door price of $26, so our price of only $14 is stupendous value.

Hardys HRB (Heritage Reserve Bin) are always of high interest. History shows that Thomas Hardy first blended grapes from multiple regions in 1865. Hardy believed that blending grapes with different characteristics would complement and enhance the qualities of each region, so began Hardy’s rich blending heritage. It is great to see home-grown European varietals at this price point. Tempranillo home is Spain but the warmer summer growing conditions of the Clare Valley is the ideal climate to make this variety shine. It shows distinctive varietal character of fresh cherries and strawberries, integrated subtle toasty French oak perfume and roasted coffee beans with smooth tannins, a hint of savoury spice and a long lingering finish. The aim of the Mr Mick range is to make wines affordable wines of interest that everyone can enjoy and this is yet another one that fits perfectly in the range. Tempranillo is an extremely versatile varietal, so will complement many cuisines. Tapas please.

Babydoll is a sister label of Yealands Estate and has proven to be hugely popular. Babydolls (miniature sheep) roam freely at Yealands Estate. Too short to eat the grapes off the vines, they make a perfect year-round lawn mower. The nose is bright and fresh with a citrus drive and layers of tropical fruits, flowering herbs and passionfruit. The palate is fresh and lively, with citrus flavours and a salty, mineral finish. Fresh & lively with exceptional length. Pair with fresh oysters or white flesh fish, a citrus or vinaigrette dressed salad, creamy goats cheese or grilled chicken.

Another cracker from the boy’s at Teusner. The Barossa Valley vineyard landscape is remarkably diverse and the gang at Teusner have plenty of vineyards to choose from. This shiraz, from a legendary Barossa grower referred here by his alter ego Roger Bilmore, is sourced primarily from vineyards along the western ridge of the valley floor. Shiraz grown in these parts produces richly flavoured wines with soft, round mouth feel and plenty of delicious savoury characters. Very good depth and concentration which offers plenty of value for money. “Get some Roger into you!” - Kym Teusner.

This is an exciting Margaret River savvy in a style far removed from Marlborough. It was made by Bruce Dukes who is one of West Australia’s star winemakers. Appealing mix of fresh tropical fruit, rockmelon, pineapple and white peach but nothing overly herbaceous. Its crisp and refreshing. It is wines like this that will see straight Margaret River sauvignon blanc continue to grow in popularity.

From the first moment of pouring, intensely concentrated aromas of jasmine and orange blossoms billow up from the glass. This is the very definition of an aromatic wine. As it settles, the delicate sweetness of Pink Lady apples drift against the citrus tang of lemon and lime zest. Pure finesse in the mouth; tantalisingly silky with a delicate spritz of residual sugar (5g/L) that adds viscosity and balances the acidity. In turn, the bright acidity sweeps away the hint of sweetness, leaving the palate perfectly refreshed. As the talc minerality lingers on the finish, you’ll find yourself reaching for another glass. Pair with yellowfin tuna sashimi, flecked with finger lime pearls. Closure: screwcap. Date tasted: February 2025. Drink: 2025-2035. Price: $35. Rating: 95/100. Vibrant purple in colour, this offers a lovely seductive nose, which is deeply flavoured with blackberry notes, plums, boot leather, bergamot, black cherries and spices. Hints of oak but melding well. Dense in structure though well balanced at all times, this is very long and has satiny tannins in abundance. It should sail through a decade in the cellar, though is drinking well now. While it certainly has some of the power of the 2020 vintage, and will go the distance, this is still more than enjoyable now, which is something that not all of the ‘20 wines can claim. Simply a cracking McLaren Vale Shiraz. Date tasted: November 2022. Drink: 20222032. Price: $150. Rating: 96/100. Ken Gargett, Winepilot.com RRP $150

The Finisterre range has a single variety/single region/special site mantra that is immediately recognisable here in a black berry meets charry earth meets high percentage dark chocolate matrix which is so identifiable in the Vales. All these notes resonate through the nose and on to the palate with neatly balanced and integrated flavours subtly backed in by well-timed maturation in a range of new, one and two year old French oak barriques that essentially offer structural integrity more than weight or power. Fulfills its regional/varietal identity as a rich and complex expression of Shiraz while remaining sensitively layered and undyingly delicious. Closure; screwcap. Date tasted: January 2023. "A very attractive Rosé/Rosado", Ken Gargett
Faustino Rivero Ulecia Rioja
Rosado 2023
Region: Veneto
Rating: 93/100C
This appealing Rose, or Rosado as it is known in Spain, is from a blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha and Viura. The grapes come from a range of regions, largely high altitude. Fermentation is in stainless steel. The colour is that of an orange sunset. The nose gives us florals, raspberries, strawberries, spices and rose petals while hints of cherries emerge on the palate. This is fresh and clean with a minerally backing.

It's a wine that leaves you wanting another glass
Mr Mick Rosé 2024 By Tim Adams
Region: Clare Valley Rating: 92/100C
Made by Tim Adams, Mr Mick is a tribute to KH (Mr Mick) Knappstein an industry legend. A rose lighter in colour, yet characterful and expressive with lifted aromas of fresh strawberry, raspberry, cranberry and pink lady apple with a hint of white peach and crunchy rhubarb. The delicate fruit lingers on the palate before a cleansing, long finish held together with crisp Clare Valley acidity. It's a wine that leaves you wanting another glass.
