DWY Landscape Architects is a full-service design and planning firm specializing in modern gardens and site design. We believe landscape architecture is an integration of horticulture, art and architecture. With each unique project, DWY strives to create a synergy between the built vocabulary and the encompassing spatial influences of the site.
In 1999, landscape architect David W. Young founded DWY on the belief that successful landscape architecture has the ability to not only improve the built environment, but to elevate the human spirit by enriching one’s surroundings, and ultimately, their quality of life. Across a wide range of project types, DWY integrates green design principles into commercial, hospitality, and residential designs. Our incorporation of architectural influences, regional and site-specific opportunities, and client-driven programmatic requirements results in a harmonious balance of built and natural elements.
In each project, our approach is not only to satisfy the programmatic requirements of the landscape as an extension of the architecture and site, but to do so in a dramatic and memorable way that inspires unique design solutions. This focus helps develop experientially rich spaces that evoke a sense of place for people to live, work and play.
With the end-goal of delivering a beautiful and functional design, we take the time to fully vet each phase of work and maintain open lines of communication throughout the design process.
Project Set-up and Sight Analysis
In order to identify the physical attributes and limitations of a site relative to the Client’s program, DWY reviews information provided by Client and visits the site to identify existing site conditions and physical relationships between the built and natural environment, existing vegetation, pedestrian and vehicular circulation, entry sequence and parking, sun and wind exposure, views, site lines, swales, drainage areas and general terrain. At this stage DWY also reviews government requirements, zoning restrictions and HOA guidelines, as if applicable.
SCHEMATIC DESIGN
Schematic Design
Through our site analysis process we assess the opportunities and constraints of each project. Scale, prevailing winds, sight lines, shade and shadow, and aesthetic considerations of color, texture, mass, and volume are all studied in the context of pursuing a singular, interconnected vision and design solutions.
Based on the Site Analysis findings, DWY will develop a Schematic Design plan illustrating the form and configuration of the proposed site and landscape. At this stage DWY assembles an image gallery representing proposed landscape and site
Design Development
When further study and/or coordination is needed, DWYLA will proceed to further develop the design and collaborate with the design team and engineers to define more precisely the spaces, circulation, scale, details, character, materiality and drainage concepts for the project; research materials or material systems and develop alternative design solutions is often completed in this phase.
DWYLA will deliver plans, sections, details, material selections, sketch-up studies of key areas, outline specifications and other comprising the Design Development Phase to the Client, architect and other consultants for review and coordination.
Permitting
Concurrently with the Design Development and/or Construction Document phases DWY prepares required documents as appropriate for site plan submittals to all Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) (HOA, municipal or state). DWY will deliver the permit plans and documents to the Client, architect, contractor or other applicant for submittal, and respond as required to comments.
PRELIMINARY STUDY
ADVANCED STUDY
Construction Documents
Based on the approved Schematic or Design Development plans, DWY prepares Construction Documents suitable for the bidding or contract negotiations and for construction of the Project. The preparation of the bid and implementation documents ensures that competitive pricing can be solicited for all scopes of work relevant to the landscape, including planting, site lighting, irrigation, pools and/or water features, site structures including pergolas or pavilions, and hardscape. DWY prepares corresponding specifications for implementing these plans concurrently.
Bidding
Upon completion of the Construction Documents, DWY prepares bid documents and assists the Client in obtaining negotiated proposals for the various phases of the project.
The Bidding Phase may include coordination of the schedule, pre-bid conference, responding to requests for information (RFIs), issuing addendums, and bid openings. DWY review bid submittals and formulate a recommendation on the award of the contract.
To streamline this process, DWY will solicit proposals directly from selected subs and establish the contract terms, provide clarification to the Construction Documents as reasonably required, and review the Contractor’s proposal to provide opinion and recommendation to the Client.

Construction Observation
During the implementation phase DWY shall make coordinated site visits during the various phases of construction to assess progress and quality of materials and to determine if construction is proceeding in accordance with the design intent and construction documents.
DWY shall review and take appropriate action on shop drawings, change order requests, product data and samples.
DWY shall perform periodic field reviews, as noted above, for the purpose of checking on landscape establishment duration of the warranty period - approximately 12 months from final acceptance.

The Sarasota Modern Hotel is a new boutique resort in the Rosemary District that features 89 rooms designed in the mid-century Florida modernism style. The architecture incorporates natural elements and draws guests out into the landscape with the amenity pool deck at the heart of the project, surrounded by guest rooms and the restaurant and bar. The landscape architect designed verdant spaces integral to the overall resort context with cabanas, pingpong tables, juice bars, and a yoga garden, seamlessly connected through water and landscape elements. The hotel is designed to challenge conventional hospitality settings, with the intention of promoting internal and external discovery for guests and families to enjoy.

Epoch is an 18-story residential tower with midcentury modern design. DWY was tasked to create an inspired groundlevel entry experience, a third-floor amenity deck with a lap pool, spa, cabanas, pergola with bar and seating, built-in lounge seating, chaise lounge seating, sectional seating with fire tables. Additionally, DWY designed several penthouse terrace spaces with spas, putting greens, and lounge spaces with fire tables. Lastly, they also designed a community rooftop terrace with bar and lounge seating.

BAYSHORE WINE

Bayshore Wine and The Maddox Naples is a unique project centered around the idea of enjoying wine in cultivated spaces. The venue features a traditional wine charcuterie bar, private tasting rooms and club, wine storage and cigar patio. The glass building opens up to garden spaces for members to enjoy their favorite aperitif. DWY was commissioned to design the site, entry water feature and surrounding gardens - each with a fire table and water feature. Inspired by the Florida Everglades, the spaces and experience allows visitors to experience a slice of the Everglades beauty which is just a few miles east of town.

Located just south of downtown in a developing neighborhood, this new home was inspired by the mid-century modern architecture for which Sarasota is known. The homeowners — avid architecture enthusiasts — selected the design team for its ability to deliver a project that emphasizes how they live and that seamlessly melds architecture with its environment.
The team collaborated on a singular design, modern in its aesthetic as well as its integration of the inside with the exterior environment. The overarching goal was to employ the tenets of modernism—clean horizontal lines, a minimal material palette and precise details—to create a harmonious and tactile experience from the ground up.
The layering of architecture and landscape in this suburban site facilitates the owners’ lifestyle as active residents of their neighborhood and community, while maintaining a sense of privacy and quiet in their vibrant landscape.

Some of the most successful projects result when the design of the site and the design of the architecture, along with the owners’ goals, are considered as one collaborative effort. At the Two Palms Residence – a playful nickname given to the project when, after the existing structure was razed, there were only two palms left on site – the landscape architect provided input on the siting of the new house and was able to shape the exterior spaces with respect to the geometry of the architecture, emphasizing the link between the interior and exterior living spaces.

Located on a narrow strip of land between the Gulf of Mexico and an intercoastal lagoon, the Coastal Modern residence serves as a family gathering place and seasonal escape for its mid-western owners. Through careful study of the site and close collaboration with the design team, the unified vocabulary of the landscape architecture reflects the modern vernacular of the beach house. The structures, elevated pool and spa, pergola, landscape walls, and large-scale plantings create privacy within the intimate coastal neighborhood and link a series of exterior spaces to the interior. The use of regional materials and sustainable strategies to develop a thoughtful aesthetic, the landscape architecture creates a rich sense of place and a tropical retreat for the owners.

This recent scope of work builds on an earlier award-winning design by DWY Landscape Architects. The goal in the first phase was to conceal the existing residence using plantings and vertical elements such as the pavilion and pergola. DWY’s goal in the second phase, after the architectural renovations, was to enhance the relationship of the landscape to the architecture. Inherent in the overall design is the cultivation of a simple yet sophisticated indoor-outdoor living experience for the owners and their guests.
The landscape is an artistic expression that extends the owners’ love of art and architecture into the site while accommodating an active outdoor lifestyle.

MOURNING DOVE DRIVE

DWY was commissioned to create serene garden spaces reflecting the modern architecture of this coastal residence while creating privacy from the street and open views to the pass. Silver Bismark palms were arranged in a grove to provide shade and shadow on the motor court while tall coconut palms were used to provide solar relief along the entry walk. A gated entrance reveals a courtyard and walkway that leads guests over a reflecting pool via floating steps to the pool deck beyond where a curved coconut palm articulates the pool space and tropical locale. Each space and every component within the space works toward creating the experience of the place.
New owners recently purchased this property and commissioned DWY to update the landscape and hardscape design. Completion of this second phase of work is anticipated in late 2019.

MODERN GARDEN

The Casey Key Residence is a place that is both architectural and natural. The geometry of the modernist house forms the overall gesture of the front courtyard garden, while on the beachside a deck simply extends the floor plane out towards the dune. Each design element relates back to the house - the entry courtyard is formed by its acute geometry and is defined on the street-side by a series of partialheight walls. A water feature sits at the converging of its main axes and draws the sight line through the house towards the Gulf of Mexico. Less geometrically defined, the beachside garden is composed of a deck and boardwalk out over the dunes, native sabal palms and seagrapes, native groundcovers, and a line of coconut palms that continues the geometry from the courtyard through to the back.

MODERN GARDEN II

DWY had the opportunity to revisit the Modern Garden project 15 years after its initial completion when the property was purchased by a couple with a large extended family. They also acquired the lot across the street, linking the Modern Garden with its inevitable next phase –Modern Garden II. This is a carefully studied complement to the original, incorporating a field of Zoysia tenuifolia as a counterpart to the spare crushed limestone yard at the first site and a sculpture of illuminated glass bamboo – a reference to the low-budget art piece across the way. The front entry garden design depicted here is the result of a design charrette that stemmed from the owner’s childhood dreams of grand water garden. The concept is sited in a courtyard that visitors and residents alike move through towards the front door. The composition and reflection of the sky and landscape in the water garden is viewed from the habitable living spaces on the floor above.

Located on a long narrow property facing Big Pass on Siesta Key in Sarasota, the images for this in-progress project highlight a collaborative design effort that is both simple and complex, open and opaque, static and dynamic. Key features include a long lap pool with lounge, seating and sculpture within the vessel that accentuates the length and focus of the property. The regional qualities of the project were expressed by the explicit use of native plantings, terrazzo hardscape that uses a native limestone aggregate, and other locally sourced materials. Project completion is expected to be 2021.
