Our unique custom design program allows you to sit down with our designers, and allows you to see your creation before it is actually manufactured. Over 10 years ago, we were one of the first in the province with 2D computerized design programs, and now we’re breaking through

GET READY FOR THE CHANGE OF SEASONS! The first and most important thing is to be proactive. That means making sure you’re car is mechanically sound and your tires are ready for the conditions ahead.

OK TIRE AUTO SERVICE RECOMMENDS THE FOLLOWING TASKS BE PERFORMED TO ENSURE YOU ARE READY FOR THE CHANGE OF SEASONS: Check the coolant (antifreeze); coolant should be flushed and refilled every two years in most vehicles. Have your oil changed (usually every 5,000 kms); consider changing to synthetic oils. Check the battery and exhaust system. Be certain the heater and defroster are working properly. Ensure your windshield is free of dings and cracks. Cold temperatures can turn a small ding in your windshield into a major crack. Keep the gas tank at least half full, decreasing the chances of moisture forming in the gas lines and possibly freezing. Check tire tread depth and tire pressure. If possible, purchase winter tires for snow and ice – best suited for Saskatchewan weather conditions. Always in sets of 4. Check to see that lights work and headlights are properly aimed. Fall results in earlier nightfall and more nighttime driving. It’s the perfect time to upgrade your headlights. * Replace wiper blades every six months; consider special snow blades if the weather dictates. * Be prepared for an emergency with the following items in your trunk: ice scraper, windshield de-icer, flashlight, whisk broom, blanket, extra clothes, candle/matches, bottled water, snacks, necessary medications and a first-aid kit. * * * * * * * * *

FOR THE UPCOMING WINTER SEASON AND YOUR TIRE NEEDS, OK TIRE REGINA RECOMMENDS: * Buy four (4) winter tires, no matter what you drive. * Buy your winter tires early; don’t wait until the last minute or you may not get any. * Have your winter tires installed early (as soon as day time temperature is 7°C or cooler); don’t wait until the last minute or the snow is here. * Talk to your tire expert; they will recommend the best winter tire for you, your vehicle, and your driving conditions.

VISION-ARY BREAKTHROUGH THAT CAN ENHANCE EYESIGHT New digital lens manufacturing lab at Factory Optical By FSR Staff. Photos courtesy of Factory Optical

“We have said it before, and will say it again. Had we not received the support in 1999 from the Regina marketplace, and by 2001, the Moose Jaw marketplace, we would not have continued to grow. We would not have attracted the interest of a pre-eminent Venture Capital group, we would not have received National recognition as one of the 40 most promising private companies in Canada, and we would not today have the capability of taking advantage of advances in technologies and turning them into new opportunities. - Stephen McIntosh, President of the Factory Optical and Optiks International group of companies

ew technology equals new opportunity – is a phrase that has not been overused in the retail optical World. But this is changing. “Economists talk of C Changes as representing major changes within industries or groups that can go so far as to alter long standing behaviours”, cites Stephen McIntosh, President of the Factory Optical and Optiks International group of companies. “Perhaps sadly, we have, in my opinion, been an industry lacking in that sort of profound change, until now.” The Factory Optical group is leading the charge towards digital lens manufacturing, having just completed construction of their new digital lens manufacturing laboratory – PureLab LMC. “I am biased, but I have not seen a lens fabrication lab like this anywhere”. Digital lens manufacturing, or surfacing, at its very basic root, involves the grinding of prescriptions onto the inside surface of a 36

FineShopping REGINA

lens, as opposed to the outside of the lens, a simple but profound departure from what has been done for decades. That slight gain in proximity to the eye, results in enhanced visual acuity throughout the lens, and mitigation of peripheral distortion. This, to the extent, that many people who could not previously adapt to a progressive, or invisible bifocal lens, may now be able to. Those that have adapted and wear progressive lenses, should see a marked improvement in all aspects of their prescription lens. Who is doing this now? “There are very real barriers to entry in this case”, offers McIntosh. “Beyond a heavy 7 figure capital expenditure for manufacturing hardware and software, there is a level of manufacturing expertise required to operate this equipment that hasn’t been a requirement in our industry previously.” Add to these the requirement for significant 6 figure annual lens volumes “if

you don’t have the volume to put through the line, it becomes cost ineffective very quickly”. More specifically, “we have been at this for 18 months, and the mantra throughout, has been that if we can’t retail digital product at non-digital prices, then we won’t do it.” Therein lies the volume requirement. “If you have been to an Optometrist in the past 18 months, you have been told about digital lenses. If you’ve been told about digital lenses, you may have suffered sticker shock from the price”. Because of the level of commitment necessary to do this manufacturing inhouse, “it is exclusively the domain of much larger optical companies”. If an optical retailer does not have the ability to manufacture digital lenses in-house, then they are forced to out-source this product from wholesale labs. The cost efficiencies are then totally lost, and they have no choice but to “charge considerably more at retail”.

There are important distinctions made with regards to the quality of digital lens product. “Like everything else, digital lens quality can be put on a continuum”. There are large retail chains out there that have chosen to surface more inexpensive product. “This is not the route that we have chosen”, suggests McIntosh. “Our digital lens designs are by Shamir, the Cadillac of lens designers”. The Factory Optical/Optiks International group has gone a step further, by introducing a 5 brand suite of progressive lenses, that includes office-specific lenses, wraps that can be accommodated in wrapstyle sunglasses, and one that tops out with Autograph II™ lenses – “widely considered to be the finest prescription lenses available today”. “Our product is manufactured on brand new SatisLoh equipment, the gold standard in ours, and many peoples’ opinion”. The Factory Optical group, undaunted by the cost and intellectual requirements associated with this undertaking, chose to build “two distinct manufacturing runs”, “twice the cost,” says McIntosh, “but built-in redundancy, and the best sleeping pill I could imagine”. “We have made a number of very conscious decisions throughout this exercise – we would only manufacture

the best lenses available, bar none. We would employ only the best hardware and software. We price digital product at nondigital prices. It was only by committing to all 3 positions, that we could introduce this product line to the public, knowing that we have done everything possible to ensure its success.” What does “digital product at non digital pricing mean?” “In our world”, offers McIntosh”, that means that we are charging at retail, the same pricing for digital product that we have always charged for non digital, or toric lenses. In our world again, this means further, that all digital lenses are included in our everyday 2 for 1 offer. We have undertaken extensive market analysis in all of our markets, and we are selling 2 pairs of high end digital progressive lenses from $275.00, often in markets where one identical pair costs twice as much.” “To put a period on our marketing of this line, no one can question our product quality and no one can question our product pricing. The introduction of a wholly owned digital lens manufacturing laboratory is just the latest stage in the evolution of this Regina

borne and bred optical retail company. Beginning in 1999, the group has grown fully 4,000% in the ensuing 12 years. With 7 retail locations in Saskatchewan, 7 more in Alberta, and now a flagship store in Victoria, B.C. the group is taking a 12 month hiatus from new store development. “We have been busy over the past few years. Beyond new optical store development, we have taken a gamble and the last 5 stores that we have built, have been the largest in Canada. We have stores now that are 10,000 square feet, with Optometric practices and sunglass boutiques contained within them. We have rolled-out our designer sunglass boutique model in the form of 3 Eyecandy locations in Saskatchewan, and right now are turning our attention to the marketing of our proprietary Rx safety eyewearprogram, having achieved considerable success in Saskatchewan as well as in the Alberta oil sands.” “What we haven’t done for some time however, is stop to catch our breath”. What will the next 12-18 months look like for the Factory Optical/Optiks International group? “We are re-engineering from the bottom, our entire operation. We have been one of the fastest growing optical companies in Canada over the past half dozen years.

We intend on emerging from this self-imposed hiatus as the best managed. Oh, and we might start to open some stores in Vancouver too. We have also set up a franchising company and we are starting to dabble in frame manufacturing. We have just moved our Moose Jaw location to huge, new premises and are planning on doing the same in a couple of other markets which we operate in, but other than that, nothing. I blame the manic energy level of those around me for all of this. FSR

BRINGING HEALTHY BACK How Patients Are Discovering Health, Hope and Happiness

An interior shot of the Weight Loss Forever LIMARP Hospital

If you suffer from obesity, you might be a candidate for the new, innovative program with Weight Loss Forever. Based in Saskatoon, Weight Loss Forever is the only company of its kind in Canada and offers a permanent solution to obesity. It specializes in a procedure called the Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (VSG), or the “Sleeve.” Currently the simplest, most-effective weight loss surgery available, its safety and success rates are making it the fastest-growing bariatric surgery in the world. “Our program offers pre-operative and post-operative care and support, including support groups, patient facilitators and nutritional guidelines. Our team includes nurses, psychologists and nutritionists in order to ensure our patients have the support they need each step of the way,” says Melanie Wildman, CEO of Weight Loss Forever. Wildman started Weight Loss Forever after having the procedure in April, 2009 and losing over 100 pounds from her highest weight. Melanie chose weight loss surgery after talking with her family about options and heard about the Sleeve from her sister-in-law, Dr. Marla Lujan. As a professor of Nutritional Sciences at Cornell University, Lujan studies women

and obesity and was familiar with the procedure and its successful results. After losing her weight, Melanie became Mrs. Saskatchewan and Mrs. Canada 2011, representing our country internationally. “It’s incredible what you can achieve when you have the tools you need to succeed,” Wildman says.

From A Doctor’s Perspective Before Weight Loss Forever patients can be approved for the surgery, they receive an in-depth pre-operative information package and are required to attend an information session on the risks and benefits of bariatric procedures. Patients also go through a medical assessment to ensure they’re healthy enough to undergo surgery and must correct any issues before approval. Doctor Carl le Roux, who practices out of Blairmore Medical Clinic in Saskatoon, first heard about the Sleeve when a patient brought her facilitator to an appointment to discuss the possibility of getting the bariatric surgery. “By the time patients see me, they’re in a high-risk group because of obesity. In my opinion, the surgery is almost

lifesaving because of the risk reduction and health benefits,” le Roux says. “Many patients have problems with diabetes, hypertension, high blood pressure or heart disease, but because of the weight loss, those things improve significantly. And the way patients change psychologically is unbelievable.” Dr. le Roux says every patient he has followed up with is very impressed with the facility and with the care they recieved. “I haven’t had one patient come back with problems yet and they’ve all done really well with recovery,” he says. “I’m very impressed with the post-operative care and support provided by Weight Loss Forever.”An interi

BRINGING HEALTHY BACK How two patients discovered hope, health and happiness John’s Story

John Grimsdale’s battle started when he was in high school. His weight started climbing and he ballooned up to 285 pounds. He tried to counter the gain with dieting and would lose weight but each loss was quickly followed by an extreme gain—over the last 30 years, he’d gone down and back up six times and it got to the point where his health was affected by his weight problem. “I was on five prescription drugs for diabetes, a couple for my cholesterol and a few for my blood pressure. My doctor was threatening me to do something; I had lots of risk factors and there was a good chance I’d drop dead one day,” says John. The 56-year-old had heard of Weight Loss Forever but had never considered it. Once his health was at risk, he started investigating Weight Loss Forever, the Sleeve and the other procedures.

“I’m the same guy; I’m just happier.”

“If they told me to do a by-pass, stomach stable or Lap-Band, I would have said no—I knew a guy that had a stomach staple and he’s in worse shape today than before, and I didn’t like the thought of the Lap-Band, putting a plastic inside me. I knew exactly what I would and wouldn’t do,” says John. “I liked what I saw at Weight Loss Forever. I talked to people and thought about it for awhile. The cost was restricting but I decided that I had to weigh the costs for the rest of my life.”

his health and eliminating prescription drugs. What he realized on his journey was that his weight loss and resolution of comorbidities were directly related.

When John decided to get the Sleeve, his family doctor was 100 per cent on board. He had researched the surgeon himself and said she was in the best class in the industry, which put John at ease when he went for his procedure on May 2, 2011.

“For me to be down to a couple of lightweight medications, from being on 14 a day, I met and exceeded all my goals,” says John. “I don’t realize how much I’ve changed but other people tell me. I’m the same guy; I’m just happier.”

John has lost 107 pounds from his highest weight —20 pounds more than he hoped he would—and is down to a svelte 178 pounds. While John was successful with his weight loss, his main goal was regaining

HIGHEST WEIGHT: 285 lbs CURRENT WEIGHT: 178 lbs TOTAL LOST: 107 lbs

John is down to one prescription drug for his blood pressure and another for cholesterol—with half the dosage—and expects to be off both drugs soon. He is also on a prescription for acid reflux but no longer needs diabetes medication and has much less knee pain.

Gay’s Story put her health first. Recently married, Gay wanted a long and healthy retirement with her husband and she found the tool she needed. “I knew if I continued to gain weight I’d have problems. My sleeve helps me control eating; it’s not the be-all and endall answer but it’s the tool that helps you maintain the lifestyle you’ve always wanted. Before, I would eat a big meal and be hungry 15 minutes later. I knew I shouldn’t but I would eat anyway. In the blink of an eye, one piece of pie turned into 30 pounds.” Down 101 pounds since getting sleeved on March 8, 2011, Gay is just 13 pounds from her goal of reaching a normal BMI.

Since she was five years old, Gay Hoffman felt overweight. She was teased by classmates and began dieting. Over the years, she tried many methods but they all yielded the same result: a loss of a few pounds followed by gaining double back. The weight kept piling on until she reached 244 pounds. “I couldn’t maintain it. It seemed I could lose a certain amount but had to be totally dedicated. I couldn’t go anywhere or eat because I knew I would gain,” says the 58-year-old. “I knew how to diet and exercise but I didn’t know how to maintain the lifestyle to keep it off.” She heard about the Sleeve and Weight Loss Forever last December from a friend who had the procedure. Intrigued by the idea of a permanent weight loss solution, Gay researched the company, surgery, surgeon and facility. She went to Weight Loss Forever’s support group meetings, listened to patients’ stories and decided to

“If I don’t make those 13 pounds, I’ve gone from a size 22 to an 8. My hands shrunk three sizes, my feet shrunk one size, even my head’s shrunk! I want to tell everyone about it!” Gay attends bi-weekly support group meetings and says the group has opened a realm of friends who don’t judge. The group laughs together, they cry together and helps each other . “When I first phoned Weight Loss Forever, I didn’t know what to expect. They answered every question and took away every fear. Weight Loss Forever is an amazing company and the people working there are remarkable. They take time to listen, do a follow-up with you and spend hours just giving of themselves,” says Gay. “When you walk into that office, they stop what they’re doing and come celebrate with you. They help you if you’re struggling; if you have a problem at any time, you can find someone to help you. They laugh, they cry, they’re part of your family. There’s nothing they won’t do for you.”

“I truly believe the products and services that Superior FD Coatings offer are amazing. We use them in our show homes and offer it as an option to our customers in their new homes. We love new and exciting products. I even have it in my own home.”

“We are excited to be using Superior FD Coatings’ products in our homes. The coatings complete the garage and convert what was just a garage to now another living space.”

Terry Gilroy - Gilroy Homes

Ken Ripplinger - Ripplinger Homes

Are you tired of staring at that ugly, cracked, and chipped garage floor? hinking of covering it up with another coat of paint or some of that do-it-yourself garage floor ‘coating’ from the home improvement store? There is a more beautiful, longer lasting alternative. Superior FD Coatings can install a gorgeous, durable industrial strength floor coating for you in as little as one day. Best of all, it’s not too late to do it. The unique products they use can be installed when temperatures are as low as minus-36C. Superior FD begins by grinding your floor flat with a machine to remove all the impurities, stains, and chemicals that might be present. Then they apply a beautiful and durable polyaspartic coating. The resulting floor is four times stronger than epoxy coatings, is impervious to oil, chemicals, and from damage by hot tires. The finished surface is non-slip, glossy, and easy to clean. Because the floor is flexible, it resists cracking even when the concrete underneath shifts and cracks. A floor coating from Superior FD Coating is the perfect solution to your flooring needs, whether it is industrial, commercial, or residential. It’s not just for garages either. The finish is so beautiful and long lasting that it makes perfect sense for retail locations, bathrooms, kitchens, or basements.

METRO PET MARKET

Giving back to the community By Sabrina Cataldo

en-year-old Olivia is still figuring out what she wants to be when she grows up. But she knows one thing for sure: she wants to work at Metro Pet Market. Liv and her family visit the store regularly to purchase food and accessories for their dogs and cats. “I like to visit Ruby and look around and see what’s new,” Liv says. “I really want to work here, but my parents say I have to wait a few years.” In the meantime, Liv volunteers at the People for Animals of Saskatchewan (PFA) Kitten Adoption Day held monthly at the downtown store. PFA sterilizes feral and stray cats living on the streets, placing tame cats and kittens in foster

homes until they are adopted. In addition to giving PFA free use of the store’s new upstairs gallery, Metro Pet Market provides adopters with literature, food samples and $25 gift certificates. “We are so grateful for this support,” says Alanna Whippler, pet rescue coordinator for PFA. “We don’t have an adoption facility, and we rely totally on the generosity of donors and volunteers. These monthly events raise awareness and have helped us find some wonderful homes for our kittens.” “We don’t sell pets,” says co-owner Kurt Jensen, “but we do encourage adoption, and this is a great way to remind people of the many animals waiting to become part of someone’s family.” Ruby, an American

Staffordshire terrier and the store’s official mascot, is a poster dog for animal rescue, as she was adopted from the Regina Humane Society (RHS). Metro Pet Market is a big supporter of the RHS, sponsoring and donating more than $10,000 per year. The store also supports smaller rescues, such as PFA and Bright Eyes Dog Rescue. “When people shop here, they know it’s about more than great products,” says co-owner Ross McNabb. “It’s about giving back to the community. We and our customers are very proud of that.” The store is best known for its specialized food, including brands that can’t be

For instance, it costs only $1 per day to feed an average 40-pound dog the high-quality raw dehydrated kibble, CaniSource. “That’s less than the cost of a cup of coffee,” Jensen says. At that price, anyone can have a Metro Pet. And just like with humans, proper nutrition is an important contributor to the long-term health of our animal companions. “If you put anything into your budget for your pets, put your money into their health,” Jensen recommends. And feeding them the best possible food is a great start. “Customers are becoming increasingly aware of the huge role proper nutrition can play in their own overall health and they’re making that connection with their pets, too,” says Metro Pet Market employee Catherine Haines. “There’s definitely a movement toward providing speciesappropriate foods and supplements for pets to increase the chances of achieving and maintaining health and, hopefully, warding off serious illness down the road.” “We don’t just ‘dabble’ in healthy foods, supplements and treats,” says McNabb. “You can be confident that everything in the store meets our discerning criteria. We’ll never sell anything that we wouldn’t feed our own pets.” A recent example is when a small pet food company was sold to a multi-national corporation that performs cruel animal testing. Metro Pet Market immediately pulled the food from its shelves. “We will not carry products

found anywhere else in Regina. “Even though we carry ‘the best of the best,’ it can be surprisingly economical to feed pets our food. We keep our prices as low as possible and can accommodate any budget,” says Jensen.

that have been tested like that, and if we suspect the quality of a particular product is decreasing, we won’t hesitate to discontinue it,” Jensen says. Because the store advocates feeding animals a wide variety of foods, a change in brands is not a problem for its customers. “Half of our customers walk in and say, ‘What should I buy this time?’ We are never ‘married’ to a brand and are constantly evolving to find the best products.” Management and staff regularly attend international trade shows and conferences to ensure they know about the latest advances in pet nutrition. These events are intense learning experiences, with Metro Pet Market employees participating alongside prominent holistic veterinarians from around the world. As a result of this education, the store promotes feeding pets home-cooked, real food as part of a balanced diet, and it carries a variety of raw and dehydrated foods for customer convenience. “There was a study of 550 dogs done,” Jensen says. “Half were fed a variety of kibble exclusively and half were fed no dog

food, just home-prepared diets, basically sharing meals with the family. The ones who received home-prepared meals lived three-and-a-half years longer than the ones who were fed kibble exclusively.” Regina pet lovers were thrilled when Metro Pet Market opened its new store in the north end of the city this July. “Most of our customers at the downtown location are from the east and the south. People were begging us to open something in the north, and we listened,” says Jensen. “The reaction to the new store has been great,” says McNabb. “We have lots of new customers both from north and west Regina, as well as, nearby towns, such as Lumsden and Craven.” The north store, located on Rochdale Boulevard, carries the same food and merchandise as the original location, with larger items such as cat trees and pet décor available at the downtown gallery. The store’s many satisfied customers recently showed their appreciation by voting Metro Pet Market as Best New Store, Best Pet Store and Best Locally Owned Store in the prairie dog’s 2011 Best of Regina reader poll. ine years ago, Paddy Thompson was at the end of her rope. Her beloved dog Ozzie was suffering. He had chronic illness, ear infections, eye infections, infection of his foot pads, diarrhoea. “I tried everything the vet suggested,” she says. “I tried a number of special, expensive allergy diets. They worked to a certain degree, but the poor guy still had diarrhoea and started losing his hair. It came out in patches.”

“Everything about a dog’s or cat’s physiology tells you it should eat raw. From the shape of its teeth-which are designed to rip and tear, as opposed to our molars, which are designed to grind carbohydrates- to their short, muscular digestive tract, which is meant to process meat quickly and efficiently. It’s what Mother Nature designed them to eat.”

Then a friend suggested raw food. Paddy had never heard of it, but she was desperate. “It was like a miracle,” she recounts. “He just continued to get better—no infections, no diarrhoea, his hair grew back—and he loved the food.” Now, Paddy is part entrepreneur and part raw food missionary. In 2003, she founded Fido and Felix Foods, the only 80

“It can be fun to explore a city that’s changing before your eyes.” – Joe Couture, Regina Leader Post

REGINA DOWNTOWN egina’s downtown is undergoing some major changes – from the first new skyscraper development in more than two decades, to the construction of Victoria Park Plaza along Twelfth Avenue. tella has style, and so will you. At the heart of Regina’s downtown, Stella & Sway specializes in classic styles with sophistication for women who crave individuality. The boutique’s clothing and accessories have presence and panache. “Stella is a woman we have conceptualized to embody today’s modern woman,” said Stella & Sway owner Karey Kapell. “She represents all our clientele: stylish, sophisticated, and mature. She is a career woman, a mother, a best friend and ultimately comfortable with who she is—a true individual. We want all women to aspire to these traits, and we have made it our philosophy to always carry items that are as versatile as Stella herself. We never compromise on that point, and our clients won’t have to either.” Undoubtedly the best aspect of Stella & Sway is that the team—the ever stylish Karey, Loreli, Shaina and Larysa—is knowledgeable in how to best dress every

woman for her body type and personality. The Stella & Sway team members know that every woman has a particular feature that makes her unique, and is always happy and able to assist each of their clients to achieve a wardrobe that makes her feel comfortable and stylish. They incorporate trends that make a statement without detracting from their classic sensibilities. “We want every woman who shops with us to know that we will make every effort to outfit them in styles that make them

look and feel amazing,” said Karey. “You’re making an investment in your wardrobe, and we want to make sure that you’re happy with your purchase. We want you to leave Stella & Sway feeling ready to conquer your world.” In addition to the comfortable and classic styles that Karey keeps on the racks, Stella & Sway guarantees clients an exceptional shopping experience. “We love treating our customers, so we’re always looking for ways to make them feel special. We even ensure that simple alterations are

done without cost to our clients because of our commitment to proper fit and sizing. We want our clients to know that they are also investing in a relationship with Stella & Sway, not just in the clothes themselves.” In the New Year Stella & Sway plans to expand its services to offer personal shopping, which will include body assessments that assist women in choosing the right clothing for their shape. Stella & Sway carries labels that are unique, high quality and versatile. “We love designers who go the extra mile with their collections because this is what we strive to do for our clients,” said Karey. We always buy with Stella in mind, and think about what she would need: career wear, casual wear and styles that are versatile enough to go between both. While being “trendy” isn’t our focus, we don’t ignore trends, rather we ensure that we touch on them every season with inexpensive pieces.” For the approaching cold months (yes, they are coming…) Karey recommends fleece lined leggings in either grey or black—perfect for gift giving, and for staying on top of style in our chilly winter climate. Beautiful Steve Madden boots are also gracing the gammes of stylish Stella & Sway clients this season. regina warehouse district

NEW LIFE IN OLD PLACES The Warehouse District By Ryan Holota. Photos courtesy of The Warehouse District here is no area in Regina with more untapped potential than the Warehouse District. Settlement began in this area of the city in 1892, but it was devastated in the tornado of 1912. When rebuilding began, the area’s proximity to the train yards and the open spaces made it perfect for the development of warehouse space. The successes of the 1910s and 1920s led to the proliferation of warehousing, manufacturing, and shipping within the district. While things changed in the 1930s, the name “Warehouse District” stuck. 92

FineShopping REGINA

In the late 1980s a group of business owners formed the Regina Old Warehouse District Association (ROWDA), a nonprofit entity with the goal of promoting and revitalizing the area. In 2003 ROWDA was disbanded and Regina’s Warehouse Business Improvement District (RWBID) was created. Known again as simply “The Warehouse District,” the RWBID was established by city council to supplement the services offered by the City of Regina. In addition to the support the RWBID provides to businesses in the Warehouse District, it also provides a plethora of

entertainment and safety benefits to the city. There are three Heritage Walking Tours located within the district, and the RWBID also provides funding for “Ding In The New Year,” Labour Day bus shuttles to Mosaic Stadium, and additional security patrols and street cleanup crews to keep the area beautiful and safe. Long known as the entertainment destination in Regina because of the nightlife located on Dewdney Avenue, The Warehouse District encompasses more than 80 city blocks from Albert Street to Winnipeg Street, and from 4th

avenue to the CPR tracks. But those who venture beyond the bars and restaurants of Dewdney know that there is much more to be found inside. All told, the Warehouse District encompasses more than 550 businesses. Some are multinational retail corporations, like the Sears Catalog Clearance Centre. Others are small sole proprietorships with owners who handle every aspect of their businesses. In between are hundreds of other businesses that provide services like electronics sales and service, home improvement, physical fitness, office supplies, furnishings, clothing, advertising, and everything else that you can imagine. There are even a growing number of residents in the area; single detached homes are scattered throughout, apartments populate the top floors of many commercial and warehouse

spaces, and ultra-luxury warehouse style condominiums make new use of old spaces. Surrounded by beautiful Chicagostyle architecture, the Warehouse District is one of the most beautiful places in the city for those who appreciate classic brick style and industrial design.

Some of this redevelopment has already begun—the abandoned Superstore building has been transformed into the beautiful City Centre Crossing, bringing new life to this part of the community. While this area of the city has a history stretching back more than 120 years, it is clear that its brightest days are ahead. To learn more about the Warehouse District, visit them online at www.warehousedistrict.ca. FSR

City Hall has big plans for the Warehouse District as well. The space that is currently Canadian Pacific Railway’s Intermodal Facility, south of Dewdney between Albert Street and Broad Street, is the heart of Regina’s Revitalization Project. Eventually, this area will be redeveloped into a mix of entertainment, commercial, and residential spaces. If everything goes as planned, the bulk of the area will be filled with an entertainment complex including a new field for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, Regina Rams, and high school football teams from around the city.

REMEMBER WHEN FURNITURE WAS MADE FROM REAL WOOD? By Ryan Holota here is a reason that antique furniture is still around today—it was made from solid woods such as oak, maple, and pine—just like the new furniture you can still buy from Fanny’s Furniture and Kitchens. Solid wood with rich finishes and handcrafted joinery, the heavenly pieces at Fanny’s will last you for a lifetime. Fanny’s Furniture and Kitchens has been in business since 1984, always going out of their way to provide the very best in customer service, selection, and price. The methods they use have sometimes been unconventional, but they obviously work. And keeping the store small, instead of expanding as much as possible, means they can build relationships with their clients. 98

FineShopping REGINA

“It’s really all about customer service for us,” says Debra Huber. “We have purposely decided to structure our business in a way that allows us to treat our customers like family. We could open a larger store, hire more sales staff, and lower our quality, but that’s just not the way we want to do things. Instead, our store is cozy and comfortable, and our staff is extremely knowledgeable. They have been with us for a long time, and they understand our values and the way we want our customers to feel.”

The Same Philosophy Now Extends To Cabinets In the company’s never-ending quest

to provide high quality, handcrafted Canadian goods to its customers, Fanny’s Furniture and Kitchens launched a new line of home cabinetry: Kekuli Bay Cabinetry. “So many of our furniture customers came back to us and said: ‘where can I get cabinets that are built as well as your furniture?’” Greg Huber, the kitchen design consultant, didn’t have an answer for those customers. “We wanted to do something to fill that gap in the market.” Kekuli Bay cabinets are 100 per cent handcrafted in the Huber workshop. Need a 25 or 17 inch cabinet? It’s no problem for the craftsmen at Kekuli Bay, and there are no additional charges. Because Kekuli Bay

cabinets are built by the same people who build all of Fanny’s furniture, you can be sure they are built with care. The factory uses the same furniture quality wood, joinery techniques, and finishing methods to create their cabinets as they do to build elegant, heirloom quality furniture. Kekuli Bay cabinets are readily available in seven species of wood and an impressive number of finishes, although the customization options are limitless. There are numerous completed kitchens in the Regina area fitted with Kekuli Bay cabinets. “Most of our projects have been renovations,” says Debra, “it just makes sense to reinvest in the home that you already have when house prices are so high. However, we have also done some new home projects, and they have turned out beautifully. Some would think that having truly custom cabinets would be expensive, but because we control every step of the project, from design to delivery, we can deliver exceptional value.” will stay with you for a lifetime.”

Furniture Absolutely Beautiful- And It Shows

Whether you are looking for quality kitchen and bath cabinets, solid wood furniture, or a little bit of both, stop by the Fanny’s Furniture and Kitchens showroom at 1217 Broad Street in Regina, or online at www.fannysfurniture.com and www.kekulibaycabinetry.com. FSR

From solid wood bedroom furniture to end tables and coffee tables, from dining room tables to china cabinets, Fanny’s Furniture and Kitchens offers everything that you need to furnish your home. Each piece is available in a wide variety of wood species and finishes, although the decision is never complicated. All staff members are experts in the home furnishings business and can help you identify the pieces and finishes that will serve you best. A walk through the showroom reveals a lot about the quality. Drawers are solid, but slide freely. Tables don’t rock back and forth when you lean on them, and cabinet doors shut with a thud instead of a clank. Everything you touch has a different feel to it. When you produce furniture out of real wood, you can subtly contour the edges for comfort and beauty, rather than leaving sharp, square edges. Get a ding in a piece of solid wood furniture? It’s a small dent that adds character, instead of a big chunk that flakes away leaving particle board exposed. “We provide our customers with furniture

that will last for a long time,” Debra says. “In terms of value, it is really hard to beat what we offer. Sure, you can buy cheaper furniture, but that often means that you will have to replace it down the road. We are just a little bit more, and the furniture

TAKE THE CHILL OFF Photos by Shawn Fulton

The luxury of soaking in a spa made for Saskatchewan winters The Saskatchewan winter is here. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a way to take that chill off on a clear, moonlit night, or have a fun place to hang out with friends and family on the weekend? Arctic Spas are engineered for the world’s harshest climates. Built in northern Alberta, they are designed to perform in the most severe conditions. That translates into reliability, economy, and peace of mind no matter where you live. 102

FineShopping REGINA

Easy to install, efficient and portable From the ground up, Arctic Spas are designed differently. Their Forever Floor® is a sturdy insulated platform— standard on every hot tub they produce. This means that you can rest the spa on any level surface eliminating the need for foundation materials like concrete, blocks and gravel. It also means you can even install a new hot tub in the middle of January—just clear off a spot on the ground and put the hot tub in place. In addition, your hot tub is now entirely portable.

Unlike other brands, Arctic Spas are fully insulated in the right places to save you money. Design inspired by our homes in northern Canada and using a self-supporting shell they insulate the exterior walls, floors and most importantly the attic with a Castcore® Mylovac cover. This means that the heat is retained in the hot tub reducing your energy costs. Going beyond the best insulated cabinet in the world, Arctic Spas recently introduced FreeHeat® to capture even more residual equipment heat, monitored by spa packs and balancing the cabinet temperature when required. Another benefit of FreeHeat® is that your hot tub has true freeze protection in a power outage. Without insulation between the water and cabinet the heat energy transfer gives you about 5 days at -20ºC before any freezing occurs. Of course, when you have a rock solid foundation to build on, all the extra options makes it look that much better. All of Arctic Spas can be ordered with stereo systems, amazing titanium finished jets, deluxe Northern Lighting packages and more. To top it all off, Arctic Spas has gone into the future and is the first hot tub that you can control from your smartphone by downloading the free Arctic Spas app onSpa®. Just download the app and get the tub to your ideal setting before you head outside.

The very best hot tubs… and more Sunset Bay is the best destination for hot tubs in southern Saskatchewan, but they do much more than sell hot tubs. They also carry steam showers and infra-red saunas for when you want to stay dry. They carry smoker barbecues for entertaining outdoors and when you want to enjoy your hot tub without being exposed to the neighbors, they also have a wide range of gazebos to enhance your yard and privacy. Of course, Sunset Bay is also one of the largest dealers of hot tub chemicals and filters in the province, for almost every make and model of hot tub. They have two full-time service technicians, trained at the Arctic Spas manufacturing facility in northern Alberta, to handle any service need on any hot tub. This is great news for those people who have bought a hot tub only to find out that they can’t get parts or service anywhere. Sunset Bay can help and because they represent quality and service, you know they’re going to be around to help you out in years to come.

Serving southern Saskatchewan since 1994

make a purchase that you regret. And their pricing is complete— it includes delivery, setup, chemicals, covers—with no surprises and no added costs. As if that wasn’t enough, they carry tubs that suit every budget, and they offer financing to help get you into a tub sooner. The staff at Sunset Bay knows hot tubs, with over 40 years of combined industry experience starting from the ground up. They know they carry the best the market has to offer. And they’re not alone. Arctic Spas is among an elite group of manufacturers that has exceeded the standards required to achieve SpaSearch Certified Status. This coveted award is based on an independent audit related to sales, service, operations, and homeowner satisfaction.

Other spas want to be Arctic Spas Arctic Spas has set the standard in the industry. More often than not, when you go shopping for a hot tub, other dealers will compare their product to Arctic Spas to show you the level of quality that they have built into the product. But why would you want an imitator when the real thing is local and so easy to get? Drop by the Sunset Bay showroom at 1333 Albert Street, or check them out on the web at www.sunsetbayleisure.com. AFFORDABLE LUXURY FROM YOUR FLOORS TO WHAT YOU PUT ON TOP OF THEM By Trilby Henderson n Regina, Fiorante Floors & Home Furnishings is synonymous with highend quality and customer service, but not all of the products they carry come with a high-end price. In fact, the store’s owners and staff take a great deal of pride in being able to offer customers the best products for their home, at the best price for their budget. “We’re more affordable than you think,” said Maria Fiorante, who owns and operates the business with her husband Emil. 106

FineShopping REGINA

The couple started the business in 1972 by selling floor coverings in a 1,000 square-foot store on Albert Street. They relocated to their current location at 2410 Dewdney Avenue in 1986. Within this 36,000 square-foot building, the store now houses a vast inventory of flooring and furniture, much of which is showcased in its 25,000 square feet of showroom space. Providing a personal shopping experience with exceptional service every step of the way is Fiorante’s greatest priority.

They take care of their customers from start to finish by choosing Canadian manufacturers who offer after-sales support, and by offering complimentary decorating services, a large inventory of products available for immediate delivery, and complete flooring installation. Fiorante Floors stocks a vast selection of floor coverings for both commercial and residential applications, including carpet, hardwoods, laminate, linoleum and ceramic products. The company’s flooring collection ranges from high-end,

designer materials to more affordable alternatives and includes all major brands, such as Superior, Satin Finish and Model hardwoods, and Armstrong, Congoleum, and Mannington vinyl products. “Apples to apples, nobody is going to beat us on price,” said Jay Perkowitsch, Fiorante flooring consultant. are very happy when they buy it,” said Perkowitsch. DuraCeramic© flooring is more flexible and adaptable than natural ceramic tile Fiorante’s product knowledge is as extensive as its selection, and its employees take care to ensure customers leave with a product they will be happy with. “Instead of just selling you a floor for the sake of selling you a floor, we try to make sure that it fits the application,” said Perkowitsch. “We’re going to make sure that the product is the right fit for you.” Fiorante offers full installation services, all of which are handled by its own skilled staff. This enables the company to make sure each customer is satisfied with their experience from the moment they set foot in the store’s front door until they set foot on their newly installed flooring. The store’s employees can also instruct customers on how to install products themselves if they so choose. With tens of thousands of square feet of flooring onsite, customers can easily find a product they like, take it home, and complete their own installation at their leisure. Congoleum DuraCeramic© is one of the most popular flooring products available at Fiorante, and for good reason. “People

and is much easier to install, which makes it “an excellent DIY product,” he said. The tile also adjusts to room temperature faster, making it feel warmer and more comfortable under foot. It can be installed with grout for a more traditional look, or without for a distinct upscale appearance. Fiorante Home Furnishings makes shopping for home décor a pleasure. A FINE RIDE By G.H.Lewmer. Photos by John Morrell

elebrating 17 years of premium service throughout the Regina area, Classic Limousine Service offers a state-of-the-art, luxury ride for every occasion, be it business or pleasure. Owner Glenn Miller is 100 per cent committed to service and transportation excellence, knowing that a quality-driven ride will enhance the well-being of each and every customer. Having built the business from the ground up, Glenn understands the responsibility that comes

with every customer that takes a seat in one of his limousines. “My philosophy has always been that everyone who enters one of my vehicles is treated with the utmost respect. If a customer is making the investment of a chauffeured ride, be it for business, or for a wedding, or for a party, chances are it’s an event that is very important to the customer. We go out of our way to determine what the customer wants and how they want to travel, so that their

time in our limousine is even greater than what they anticipated. I believe this is the primary reason why over one third of our business is either repeat customers or referrals.” Classic Limousine offers you over five different luxury models to choose from, each with their own unique style to best suit your occasion. For a larger event, such as a wedding or a graduation, Classic Limousine has three different models of mega-stretch limousines that seat up to

14 people, and come equipped with flat screen televisions, intercom and full-bar service. For the business traveller, the executive sedan offers a quiet, luxurious ride with ample room for business meetings. For that special occasion where opulence is all-important, the Ford Excursion seats up to 14 and has been hailed as the Rolls-Royce of limousines. With plenty of experience catering to every event imaginable, Glenn can offer you his expertise in choosing the right ride for the right occasion. “We’ve provided service to over 4,000 weddings. We were the limousine service for the Rolling Stones, Elton John and Cher when they came to Regina, so we’re extremely savvy when it comes to coordinating logistics. With all the knowledge that we’ve acquired throughout the years, we’re always aware of the time and distance it takes to accomplish the requirements of every individual ride. We’re more than happy to sit down with any customer to determine their needs. We’ll give them the best advice to help

structure their ride and get the utmost in value.” All of Classic Limousine’s vehicles are properly insured, licensed and inspected. This includes all of the stretched vehicles, which are approved by the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority and are licensed for full bar service. The entire fleet’s drivers have years of collective experience and are dedicated to safety and service with every ride. “We tend to carefully choose the right driver for the right event. Many of our repeat customers will request a certain driver because they’ve been extremely satisfied with the quality of service from their previous time with that driver. For someone riding with us for the very first time, we try to find the best driver with the most experience to compliment the spirit of the event. That knowledge and expertise that the driver brings to the ride helps make the event run smooth and worry free.” With 24 hour service, seven days a week, 365 days a year, Classic Limousine is available at any hour for any occasion.

After 17 years of exemplary service in the Regina area, Glenn is eternally optimistic about the future and what it holds. “I believe there will always be a need to have comfort and luxury in one’s life. It doesn’t matter who you are, or what your income is. Everyone deserves the experience of being recognized and valued. I think that’s what a luxury ride can bring to every person. That feeling of being treated special.” FSR

options so that you can make as informed a decision as possible, based upon the greatest amount of knowledge. Smiths’ Insurance allows you the opportunity of having a licensed broker always available to answer any of your insurance questions. By offering extended hours, seven days a week, every customer is given the chance to explore details and discuss options with an experienced professional broker. For the Smith family, customer service has

always been central to the business, and is the reason for their continued success with customers. “We made a conscious decision that Smiths’ Insurance would be able to offer a licensed home insurance broker every evening and every weekend,” said coowner Carol Smith. “That’s why people know if they want the right advice and want it convenient to them, they can

come to see us.” When entering their Albert Street office, one is immediately struck by the spaciousness and accessibility of the location. These are characteristics not normally associated with an insurance agency, but are traits that were carefully designed to offer every customer the best possible service. “When Dan and I started Smiths’ Insurance in 1980, we had already come from years of experience within the industry,” Smith said. “Our goal was always to design a space and experience for the customer that was friendly, open and inviting.” With a wide variety of insurance options to choose from, customers are guaranteed to find whatever coverage they seek. General Insurance options include home, tenant, condo, mobile home, farm and business as well as a large selection of auto insurance, including personal, commercial, motorcycle, snowmobile and recreational vehicle. On top of those services, Smiths’ Insurance can also address all of your needs for motor licensing, as well as insurance for health, life and travel. The family focus has always been paramount to the Smiths, and is the primary reason for their continued success. One of the most gratifying parts of our job is seeing two or three generations of the same family become part of our family here,” Smith said. “I know that many of our customers find our central location very convenient and they meet with us because we were recommended to them by friends or members of their own family. We believe that being an independentlyowned, Saskatchewan-based family business means a lot. In this day and age, the majority of businesses treat service as a secondary option. At Smiths’ Insurance, knowledge and quality service will always remain the fundamental reason of why and how we do business. That will never change.” Smiths’ Insurance is open Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. as well as Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. FSR

THE WINE CELLAR CELEBRATES AND INVITES YOU ALONG By Mackenzie Brooks. Photos by John Morrell his year The Wine Cellar celebrates the store’s 17th anniversary. On any anniversary, it is fitting to look back on the years that came before. For The Wine Cellar, years of cultivating customer service and fine wines have curried loyal customers and a reputation for excellence in the homemade wine community. What is most outstanding about The Wine Cellar are owners John and Heike Doerksen, who make excellence their business and it is plain to see in the large selection of products, wares and warm atmosphere in the store. “From the very start of our business 17 years ago, we really wanted to make sure that customer 112

service was our focus,” said Heike. “We always knew that we wanted to grow the business, so it was paramount for us to build it on a foundation that would support our growth—our customers have always been our first priority. “We already knew that we had a superior product in our wine kits, so we wanted to be sure that our customers got the best of us too. It was always our desire to bring excellence to our customers in every possible way. We have been very privileged to have so many loyal customers, some of whom have been with us since our start. Many of our customers are extremely knowledgeable

about grapes, wine and the personality that each wine possesses. Wine is as different as people are. Each has its own characteristics; some are sweet, some are bold, some are strong.” So, forget what you think you know about wine kits. If the last time you tried homemade wine it was that brew in someone’s garage, (you know, back when you thought polyester was the height of fashion) it’s time to explore where The Wine Cellar’s selection of wine kits can take you these days. “Wine kits have come a long way,” said Heike. “They aren’t what you expect them

to be. We deal with Vineco International and Winexpert—leaders in wine kit manufacturing. Their kits produce wines which are of a very high quality. Many kits are country specific and some are even vineyard specific.” The Wine Cellar offers two ways to make your wine kit. You can take it home and make it yourself and, of course, the knowledgeable staff at The Wine Cellar will answer any questions that you may have. Secondly, you can make it at The Wine Cellar. That is: choose your kit, add the yeast and the wine makers at The Wine Cellar will do the rest. Bottling? No problem. The Wine Cellar’s bottle fillers are state-of-the-art and each can fill four bottles at once, so you can spend more time enjoying your wine than you do bottling it. Corking? Forget cumbersome manual corkers. The Wine Cellar’s corker is also state-of-the-art and merely requires the push of a button to insert the cork into the bottle. The Wine Cellar team also makes certain to keep your bottling experience fun by offering a selection of cheese and crackers while you are bottling. Excellent! So whether you are a novice or a veteran

wine maker (or brewer for that matter), The Wine Cellar has everything you need—the highest quality product for wine and beer, the finest Spiegelau stemware (wine always tastes better in the proper glass, after all!) and Le Creuset cookware to create the perfect meal to complement that glass of red, white, blush or port. To experience the quality of product and service The Wine Cellar has to offer and to create your own masterpiece, stop in at 1646 Albert Street and visit Heike, John or any of the knowledgeable staff for the best advice. BATTERY WITHOUT PRICE ASSAULT By Carol Todd. Photos by Shawn Fulton

he ubiquitous battery. It powers everything from flashlights to fourwheel drives and from motorcycles to motor homes. And, all can be found among the thousands of batteries Regina’s Saskbattery has in its more than 15,000 square-foot warehouse. With his locally-owned company, Mark Carroll started out serving just the Regina area in the late 1990s. After over 10 years of servicing the local market, solid sales sparked an expansion into the broader market in 2008 when Saskbattery began. “We are very proud to have sold our battery products to every province and territory in Canada, as well as every state in the United States,” says owner Mark Carroll. “Our goal is the right battery product for the right price arriving at the right time.” While there are stories that the ancient Egyptians had developed a primitive form of battery, the Encyclopedia Britannica states that the first operable battery was developed by the Italian physicist Alessandro Volta around the turn of the 19th Century. His work led Michael Faraday to derive the quantitative laws of electrochemistry, leading to the production of commercial primary cells. Advances continued throughout the 19th Century, leading to the development of the lead-acid cell, the first practical 114

storage battery and the forerunner of the modern automobile battery. While certainly not dating back to antiquity, Carroll has been fascinated by batteries for many years. “I used to dissect the watches my parents gave me, just to take out and examine the batteries,” he says. That fascination eventually sparked Saskbattery.

Saskbattery is more than a wholesaler; it also offers retail sales and service. “We think of ourselves as more of an oldtime shop. We service the hell of it,” says Carroll. “Unlike at the big box stores, we get our hands dirty. We’ll remove your old battery and install the new one.” And, an extra bonus in this day and age, Saskbattery will ensure your old battery is recycled so it won’t harm the environment.

The big bonus for retail consumers is that the wholesale buying power of Saskbattery keeps costs down and quality high. “We sell a lot of batteries, and deal directly with the manufacturers. This lowers our cost and yours,” says Carroll. Not only are the prices good, but the quality is also excellent because of the high turnover in stock. “Who knows how long a battery has sat on a shelf at a store?” he asks. “We have a saying: ‘Don’t buy old bananas and don’t buy old batteries, both are no good’.”He adds that every battery is tested right before shipping. If you buy a power sports battery, the company supplies a test sheet on your battery’s performance. And, now with winter upon us, it is the time to not only ensure our vehicle batteries are in good shape for the cold, but just as important says Carroll, it’s time to ensure the batteries from your summer-use vehicles are properly put to bed for the winter. Mom always told us to put away our toys, and as we’ve gotten older, our toys have become more expensive. Most of them, whether they are boats, motorcycles or ATVs, use batteries that need to be stored properly. “It’s important to ensure your batteries are fully charged and disconnected before storing them for the winter,” says Carroll. “Storing them properly and giving them an additional charge in mid-winter can double the life of a seasonal battery.” Saskbattery also offers online sales, with payments made through PayPal, ensuring the safety of your transaction. But, if you’re shopping in person and don’t use cash, you can always, well, charge it! For more information, check out the Saskbattery website at saskbattery. com. Dive! Dive! Dive! By Carol Todd. Photos by Shawn Fulton

eptune take note—From the dark waters of northern Saskatchewan to the bright seas of the Caribbean and beyond, Saskatchewan people rule the waves. There’s no firm data, but ask anyone in Canada’s navy and they’ll tell you that prairie people make the best sailors. Perhaps the seemingly endless expanse of prairie prepares them for the endless expanse of ocean. Whatever the reason, prairie folk rule not just the waving fields of wheat, but the ocean waves of salt water as well. And, it’s not just above the waves, but below, where Saskatchewan people rule, says Brad Johnson, owner of Regina’s Planet Scuba. “There are people from Saskatchewan working in the dive industry all over the world,” he says. Many of them probably learned their skill from Johnson, a certified Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) instructor. Nearly three-quarters of the earth’s surface is covered with water. Under it lies a vast expanse abounding with life, a great 116

FineShopping REGINA

deal of it still unexplored. Johnson says Planet Scuba has everything you need to start exploring all the hidden treasures that abound beneath the waves.

Everything you need From newbies to experienced divers, the store carries what’s needed for every stage of underwater discovery and for every age and size. “We are the place to go for wet suits. We have the largest stock in Canada, and the largest variety of rental equipment in the country,” Johnson says. That stock includes everything from swimwear and gear, apparel, exposure protection, snorkeling gear, spear fishing gear and/or scuba gear, all at affordable prices. And, they service what they sell.

All levels instruction Planet Scuba also offers snorkeling and scuba diving training from certified instructors. If you purchase new snorkeling gear (mask, snorkel and fins), it includes a snorkeling bag and snorkeling lesson. The PADI instructors are qualified to train beginner courses all the way up

to professional levels of diving. To ensure safety and comfort, the scuba courses include basic snorkeling gear, so you’ll be both knowledgeable and prepared when you complete your training. Families are welcome, as all ages from age 10 and up can take their swimming skills to the next level with snorkeling or scuba diving. Each scuba diving certification includes class work, pool sessions and open water sessions. If you already have a trip planned, you can still learn to dive before you go. With a Referral course, you can get your class work and pool sessions done before you leave and then finish your course on your trip with any PADI instructor in the world.

Guided exotic tours Most of the people who take instruction or purchase dive equipment or other gear are headed south for a winter break. “Ninety-five per cent of our business is people going to the tropics,” he says. And, many of those are divers, young and old, experienced or not, who accompany Johnson on one of the many guided tours

he offers on his own or in conjunction with other companies. Those planned dive trips to warm locales are what really float Johnson’s boat. He was bitten by the diving bug 20 years ago, with the idea he would spend his life working in the tropics. While he may not have made it there full-time, at least not yet, Johnson spends a good deal of the year escorting divers to those sometimes exotic locales. The trips include land-based accommodation and luxury live-aboard cruises in many destinations. There are new places to dive offered every year, but the annual trips to British Columbia, Mexico and the Bahamas are always in demand. “It’s a full range of exciting recreational dive travel adventures. It’s exciting, fun, and safe,” Johnson says. Unfortunately, all that fun and adventure has been tainted with the realities of modern life in recent years. Johnson was astounded while diving in the Galapagos Islands, the archipelago made famous by Charles Darwin and The Beagle. There, amidst the shining sea and sparkling sky, a box spring mattress floated past. “I was appalled,” he says. “But, some of humanity’s detritus has made a more productive life under the sea, with decommissioned warships helping form new underwater reefs for wildlife to live in and divers to enjoy. Johnson invites everyone to: “Come with me and explore the world.” With winter’s icy tendrils creeping into our bones, now is a good time to get your toes wet. And, Brad Johnson and the staff at Planet Scuba will ensure you don’t even have to hold your nose—just dive in and enjoy! FSR

hen Tamara Lomenda-Camacho opened Perimeters Studio in 1997, she envisioned a destination that was different than the other salons in which she had worked. For one thing, she doesn’t call anyone a client. “We like to refer to the people who come here as guests,” she says. “The term ‘client’ doesn’t represent the relationship we want to create in the salon. We want our guests to feel truly special from the moment they walk into our space to the moment they walk out.” It’s an ambitious goal, one that is reinforced by Perimeters’ own Mission Statement.

Every facet of Perimeters’ recent renovation was carefully chosen with the environment in mind. The salon regularly gives back to the community as well, participating in Aveda’s Walk For Water program and supporting the Children’s Wish Foundation, to name a few. In an age when many salons are moving to a single colour line to ease their inventory management and product training, Perimeters continues to carry a wide range of brands. “It’s more work for us, but it allows us the opportunity to select just the right product for the guest,” explains Tamara. “Just as every hair colouring product is unique, every one of our guests has unique needs. It even carries all the window treatments you might need to ensure a coordinated look, all within the company’s larger, new facility at 1600 8th Avenue. The larger facility can accommodate Parkland’s entire selection of flooring as well as what Grain terms a “huge” selection of window coverings. Grain is proud of the fact that his story is locally owned. “We’re your neighbors,” he says. “Our stores are locally owned by people who live, and invest, in your

We pay less, and so do you,” he says. Low price combined with high quality is just one of the many differences Grain, who’s been in the business for more than 20 years, believes sets Parkland apart from other retailers. “The key thing is style and selection,” he says, adding

that customers also benefit from the fact his company has a single focus. “Flooring is what we do. It’s what we know better than anyone. It’s what we do better than anyone.” Add to that the store’s Beautiful Guarantee—if you don’t love your new floor, they’ll replace it for free—and the decision on where to shop is a no-brainer. Deciding which floor covering is right for you and your family, or for your business, could seem with all the options available. THESE MAYTAG MEN ARE NOT LONELY AT ALL Taking the jargon out of appliance shopping for half a century By Ryan Holota. Photos by Shawn Fulton ave you ever noticed how confusing it is to buy appliances? One store tells you one thing, another store tells you something completely different. High efficiency, Energy Star, steam clean; features are nice, but how do you know that you are getting the most value for your money? That’s where Dave and Dave at The Maytag Store come in. They’ve been in the business for decades, and they know

122

FineShopping REGINA

all about the different lingo and catch phrases that float around the appliance industry. And they know how to explain it to everybody, clearly and briefly. Walking in to The Maytag Store is a little like going to Appliance University—the staff doesn’t just ask you what you’re looking for, they ask why too. “There are a lot of industry buzzwords and gimmicks floating around,” says Dave Marshall, “and a lot of them don’t really mean anything.

Steam clean ovens are an example of that. Any oven will hold one cup of water and turn it to steam during a self-cleaning cycle, which is really all that those brands do. But they’ve found a way to make it sound like they have something special. We ask why our customers are looking for specific features, to make sure they get the appliance that they really want and need.” Their approach works. The Maytag Store

first opened its doors in April of 1959. And while the original owners are no longer in the business, it has stayed in the same family for all of those 52 years. That’s a history of customer service that nobody can match. And thanks to the volume that they do, they offer the same great pricing that all of the big box stores advertise, but with much better customer service. In fact, The Maytag Store is southern Saskatchewan’s largest independently owned Maytag dealer. One of the many things that sets The Maytag Store apart from its competitors is the 10,000 sq. ft. warehouse they have in the city, chock full of Maytag appliances. And the showroom floor which is so big that they carry almost every model of appliance in the catalog. At The Maytag Store, you don’t need to wait 6 weeks before you get your appliance, you can usually take it home the same day. With Maytag, you know you’re getting quality. Maytag build the longest lasting appliances in the industry, and they back them up with the best warranties in the business. In fact, some of their warranties last as long as 10 years! If something does go wrong, The Maytag Store has 3 full-time Service Technicians on staff to take care of you – the very next day. They truly service what they sell, and only what they sell – you don’t need to wait in line behind customers who bought their appliances from some other store. As if that wasn’t enough, Maytag has also designed their appliances with what they call MCT – Maytag Commercial Technology. MCT means that Maytag uses parts from commercial equipment in their residential appliances. With Maytag, you can get a glass top range with a 12”, 3500w burner – which means you CAN use a canner on it. And it will last a lot longer than some of those other brands. When you need some new appliances, or just need to correct the information those ‘other guys’ have given you, go and see Dave and Dave at The Maytag Store. With over 50 years in business and thousands of satisfied customers, you’ll be glad you did. Their store is located at 1301 Broad Street. Or give them a call at 306-522-0000. NEW CUSTOM SHOP CHANGES THE FACE OF AUTOMOTIVE ELECTRONICS IN REGINA By Trilby Henderson. Photos by Shawn Fulton lthough it has yet to celebrate its first anniversary, KustomEis has quickly become one of the leading providers of automotive electronics in Regina and the surrounding area. When you speak with owner Jay Eiswerth and witness his business philosophy in action, it’s easy to see why this fresh-faced company is already making a lasting impression on a growing list of satisfied customers. After spending nearly 20 years working for other companies in the industry, KustomEis founder Jay Eiswerth was

124

FineShopping REGINA

ready for a new challenge. He decided to launch a new business that specialized in 12-volt electronics - something Regina’s existing market had lacked - and delivered service with a level of care that easily surpassed the impersonal transactionbased experience that had become standard in the industry. Backed by the support of his wife and son, Eiswerth turned his vision into action, and officially opened KustomEis on Dec. 9, 2010. Business took off so fast that within two and a half months, Eiswerth hired a certified technician to help him

keep up with demand. He added a second full-time employee to his team less than five months later, bringing the combined industry experience offered by the business to a total of more than 44 years. Of course, it takes more than experience to build long-term customer relationships, which is why Eiswerth strives to deliver a level of service his clients will not find anywhere else. “We take service very seriously,” he said. Unlike at big box stores where customers deal with multiple people before making

a single purchase, Eiswerth makes a point of personally taking care of his clients throughout the entire process, greeting them as they enter his store and thanking them as they leave. KustomEis provides its clients with the full gamut of 12-volt accessories, from alarm systems to DVD navigation and vehicle tracking to subwoofers, speakers and amplifiers. The company carries all major brands, including Rockford Fosgate, Focal, MB Quart and JBL. Remote starters are a very popular item this time of year, said Eiswerth. With winter fast approaching, customers can relax knowing they can remote start, lock and unlock their doors, or open their trunk by simply touching a button on their Blackberry, iPhone, or Android phone. If their winter vacation includes a lot of travel time, customers might want to invest in rear seat entertainment to keep the kids happy, and the adults sane, during long hours on the road. IS WHERE THE HEART IS By Ryan Holota cott Tresek and three of his friends began installing kitchen countertops as a side business several years ago. Word spread quickly, and before long a decision needed to be made: stop doing it, or quit your day job and open a business. Tresek’s friends chose to stay with their day jobs, but Scott made the leap from employee to entrepreneur. CNG Stone was born. In the years since, CNG stone has become a leader in residential and commercial 126

stone. Today, Scott offers a full complement of stone colours and styles in materials such as granite, slate, marble, onyx, soapstone, quartz and more. “There are more than 600 colours of stone available, with between 60 and 70 colours that are used regularly,” explains Tresek. “In addition to those colours, each piece of stone is different in terms of pattern and texture. No two kitchens are really ever the same.”

Because of all the colours and textures available, it is very important to see the actual slab that is going to be used in your home or business. CNG stone has you covered there, with more than 200 slabs for you to look at. Most of the granite in Canada comes from quarries in Brazil, but CNG has recently discovered some amazing quarries in Italy, and has recently imported an entire shipping container worth of stone from there. Bringing in large quantities of stone from a single quarry has a lot of benefits to the end

user, from price, to quality, to the ability to do larger kitchens and matching vanities.

CNG stands for quality A growing reputation In today’s world, one of the best ways to discover the quality of work a company does is to hit the Internet. A brief reading of the endorsements CNG Stone has received at TrustedRegina.com shows just how happy they make their customers. Check out this referral, right from the internet: “We had both our kitchen and bath countertops done with them and out of the three other quotes we got, theirs was the best. Their service was incredible, they were on time for measurements and installation, and I give them a 10.” Karen Regina, SK Still, in the world of homebuilding and home renovations, problems sometimes arise. That’s why some of CNG’s favorite referrals are from customers who have had snags on the job. “I’ve always believed that your reputation is the best asset your business can have,” says Scott. “That’s why we go out of our way to do anything possible to build and protect ours.” “When we deal with issues head on, our customers know that we are truly working for them, and that sets them at ease. That’s why we have seams in our showroom, so our customers know what they are going to get.” And CNG does have two seams in its showroom for all to see. “This seam over here,” explains Scott, “is the industry standard seam. It looks okay, but you can definitely see that it is there. This seam over here,” he explains, pointing to the other side of the display, “ is what our seams look like.” A cursory glance doesn’t reveal a seam at all, but upon close inspection a faint line is seen in the pattern. “We have very experienced workers, and a very expensive seam setting machine. It is an additional cost for us, but it allows us to deliver a superior finished product. Of course, we work hard not to have seams at all, but sometimes it

is inevitable.” Part of delivering exceptional customer service at CNG Stone is educating customers. “Granite is a natural product, and so it’s never perfect. There are pros and cons to it, as there is every countertop material, so it is important to me that my customers understand the product, as well as how to care for it,” says Scott. “There isn’t a lot of maintenance that is required, but doing it properly will ensure that your countertops will be beautiful forever.” The quiet showroom hides a busy workshop. Separated from the front of the space by a custom-built, insulated door more than four inches thick, the workshop is full of people running gigantic saws and noisy grinders. The production manager, David Gray, is a lifelong stone worker who moved to Regina from Quebec just for the opportunity to work with CNG Stone. “This is the best place I’ve worked in my career,” he says, adding, “here, I have complete control over the quality of the product that we deliver, and nothing goes out the door without meeting my standards.”

Those standards are high. More than once Gray has sent Tresek himself back to the workbench, just to get a little bit better of a polish on the edge of a new countertop. Gray also proudly shows off a piece of countertop he has just finished. A narrow piece of stone has been reinforced with a steel rod. “Most people wouldn’t do this,” he says, “but I know that this piece of granite will never crack or break, so to me, it’s worth the time it takes to do it.” With a showroom that is open six days a week to accommodate the busy lives we all lead, CNG stone makes it easy to discover the products that you are looking for. Located at 1445 Scarth Street, CNG is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday through Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. If you need to learn more about stone products outside of those hours, visit www.cngstone.com, or check them out on Facebook at www.facebook. com/cngstone. When visiting their showroom you’ll be introduced to a varied assortment of work stations, desks, chairs, tables, cabinets and ergonomic work tools from across North America that you can choose from. The knowledgeable staff will help introduce to you an assortment of home or business options that will complement your unique creative vision by combining style, efficiency and affordability. For owner Mauro Montanini, the key to Avanti’s ongoing success is their relationship with their customers. “A large percentage of our business has

always been referrals from individuals or companies that we’ve worked with,” he says. “Our goal at Avanti is to help every customer find the perfect furniture that meets their needs.” Mauro believes that making an informed decision is imperative when making a purchase that will last for decades. “What we like to do at Avanti is to sit down with every customer and begin asking them questions to help focus the choices for the type of furniture that they’re looking for. Questions such as: ‘What type of work do you do?’ and ‘What kind of storage do

you need—files, binders, etc.?’ What is the size of the space that you need furnished, or how many people come to your office every day. These are important practical considerations that really help the customer narrow down their focus to choose the ideal furnishings that meet their specific, individual needs.” Avanti works with two- or three-dimensional drawings to help you see how your design selections will be realized within your working space. You’ll be able to make changes and see different options that are available to you before making a decision on what works best for you. Having this option helps you to be certain that what you have selected will work well for you says Mauro.

“Many customers have told us that they feel very comfortable when they visit our showroom. I know that all of our staff, from the customer service staff to the installation team take great pride in having comprehensive knowledge they share with the customer. In today’s world, quality and knowledge is becoming harder to find for customers when contemplating a purchase. Avanti has always abided by the principle of quality service backed with quality savings providing true value” Avanti Office Products is recognized for furnishings with style and flexibility, that allow you to create the perfectly designed environment for work or for your home at a price that you can afford. That reputation is something Mauro is very proud of. “For us, office furniture is more than just chairs and desks. They contribute directly to the efficiency of the space and the well-being of the individuals inhabiting the space. You can have the nicest furnishings in the world, but if it doesn’t harmonize with who you are and how you work or live, it’ll never work. At Avanti, it’s always about helping the customer make the correct choices that will last a lifetime. It’s about making your office work.” You can visit the Avanti Office Products showroom at 1245 Osler Street. Bob Jaworski- President and GM Auto Electric Service Ltd. Regina

SEVEN DECADES OF LEADERSHIP IN ALL THINGS AUTOMOTIVE By Trilby Henderson ith a history that can be traced back to the early 1940s, Auto Electric Service is one of the longest standing companies to operate within Regina’s Warehouse District. While the business has become well known as one of Saskatchewan’s leading wholesale automotive parts distributors, its industry expertise extends much further, encompassing a full offering of retail automotive and body shop products and a number of value-added services. “Our company is a lot more than what most people would think we are,” said Bob Jaworski, Auto Electric’s president and general manager.

130

FineShopping REGINA

The company essentially got its start in 1943 when business partners G.W. Grant and G. Dawson purchased Bannister Auto Electric and began operating in a 1,000 square-foot building staffed with six employees. Auto Electric launched its Yorkton branch in 1948, and opened a new head office and distribution centre in 1956. Its Estevan and Weyburn branches were added in 1957 and 1961, followed in 1975 by Mainline Fleet Service – a new company specializing in the fleet and industrial market. Today, the company employs about 100 full-time staff, with half of themworking at its main Broad Street location.”We’ve

had great growth over the years,” said Jaworski. Although the sale of wholesale automotive parts accounts for the majority of Auto Electric’s business, the company boasts a strong retail division that offers customers access to virtually any automotive part on the market. “We have the largest automotive parts inventory in Saskatchewan,” said Jaworski, noting the company is both an ACDelco distributor and a member of AutoValue, a North American buying group. Auto Electric was also one of the first Regina businesses in the automotive

industry to enable its customers to order products online, a testament to their focus on delivering quick and convenient service. In addition to parts sales, the company operates a large independent repair shop. Here, its five full-time technicians and investment in specialized equipment and diagnostic tools means the company is able to complete all types of automotive repair and maintenance. Auto Electric also houses a body shop supply division that supplies southern Saskatchewan’s body shop industry, as well as individuals looking to complete their own body shop repairs. At its modern paint-mixing facility, the company can mix paint to precisely match any OEM code, or can scan and match custom colors using its Photo spectrometer. Auto Electric has even supplied interior decorators and do-it-yourselfers with custom colors for their non-automotive projects, such as painting furnace vents or refinishing furniture. Auto Electric has remained an owner-operated, customer-focused company, although it has changed hands several times over the years and, in fact, completed its most recent leadership transition in June. Jaworski said the business’s owners are all directly involved in the day-to-day management of the company. In addition to their obvious investment in Auto Electric’s overall performance, this business model has ensured the company’s leaders remain both connected and responsive to its customers. “Our head office is right here so if there needs to be a decision made, it is made instantly,” he said. “When it comes to business operations, we react very quickly to what’s going on in the marketplace. From a customer service standpoint, I would say we’re very in touch with our customers.” With its new leadership team in place and a strong network of long-serving employees to support it, Auto Electric Service will continue to establish its name as one of the top companies in Saskatchewan’s automotive industry. “The last three years have all been record-breaking years and this, by far, is going to be a huge year,” said Jaworski. “The economy in Saskatchewan is very strong and we continue to add inventory and personnel so that we can better service our customers at the retail and wholesale level.” FSR Auto Electric 1360 Broad Street Regina, Sk. 306.525.2551

ART YOU CAN USE Master craftsman builds furniture and custom cabinets with passion and flair By Trilby Henderson

hen choosing the items that bring life to your home, few materials can match the beauty and charm of handcrafted, custom-made solid wood furniture and cabinetry. Artisan Furniture takes this a step further by offering quality workmanship that will stand the test of time, and a flair for design that makes each piece a practical work of art. The Regina business is owned and operated Cameron Carlson, a master craftsman whose passion for woodworking sparked while he was still in high school. After graduating, Cam spent more than a decade building custom pieces for Works of Art Furniture, a company Regina residents will now recognize as Urbane. He decided to open Artisan Furniture in

132

1996 and later invited Kirk Dermody, a former Works of Art colleague who has also worked with Excel Custom Cabinets, to join him. The two have been working together for the past seven years. Cam said opening his own business has allowed him to put more of his own creative flair into his designs and form closer working relationships with his clients. “To order custom furniture, a lot of detail gets missed from the customer to the salesperson, from the salesperson to the builder,” he said. At Artisan Furniture, Cam deals with each customer directly, making sure none of the important details that dictate their needs are overlooked. Cam’s handcrafted furniture ranges from

exquisite jewellery chests to massive wall storage units. He works with clients to create entirely unique pieces that speak to their personal style, in addition to building more mainstream contemporary or traditional items. Though each of these pieces serves a practical function, their artistic value is unmistakable. The vast majority of Artisan’s customers arrive at the business because they have seen or heard of Cam’s work from a friend, family member or colleague. In fact, it was a request from a delighted customer that led Cam to expand his craftsmanship to a new avenue—building solid wood kitchen cabinets. Over the past few years, custom cabinets have become a major focus of Cam’s business.

elsewhere that meets their needs. Once a design has been chosen, Cam works with the customer to hash out the details, such as the type of material used, the amount of solid wood used, the level of detail, the style of joinery, and the size. These details are important not only because they impact the final cost, but because they can make the difference between a great product and a product the client absolutely loves. “When people get something custommade, they get exactly what they want and of a quality that will last.” FSR

Artisan Furniture 1212B Winnipeg St Regina, S.k 306.347.7994 www.artisanfurniture.ca

Although solid wood cabinets are more of an investment than cheaper factory-made alternatives, Cam’s clients find that the benefits far outweigh the cost. For one, the cabinets are better able to stand up to daily use and retain their new look for a much longer period of time. “When I build something, it’s going to have integrity,” he said.

He encourages homeowners to consult a designer, such as Brian Runge or Marina Hildebrand—two Regina designers he has often worked with—before finalizing their plans. A talented designer will help them to get the most out of their investment by making sure the design and layout of their new cabinets is functional with respect to their needs.

Cam only works with hardwoods, but the selection he offers is vast and includes everything from the more moderately priced oak and maple to exotic hardwoods such as ebony and padauk.

Whether they are embarking on a kitchen remodel or looking for a new coffee table, most clients who enter Cam’s shop already have a specific idea of what they want and they come to Artisan because they haven’t been able to find a product

Jim & Angie Mamais: Building Sandwiches and Friendships Since 1989 Jim and Angie Mamais opened their first Mr. Sub franchise in Regina in 1989. Today, they own and operate two Mr. Sub locations in Regina, and are known not only for the delicious food that they make, but also for their friendly smiles and excellent customer service. Running two businesses is always a challenge, especially when you have two kids that play hockey, but the Mamais family takes it in stride. “It is all worth it when we see our customers coming back day after day. We really get to know the people who come into the stores on a regular basis–they’re like family,” says Angie. Treating people like family means great customer service, but it also means a great product. “Mr. Sub is a Canadian franchise, owned and operated in Regina. To me, supporting Canadian and local businesses means a lot,” adds Jim. “In addition, we use only the highest quality product in our sandwiches. We bake the bread right here in our store, and our products, along with everything else, are always fresh.” Next time you’re hungry, stop by one of the Mamais family restaurants. They are both open for breakfast, and there is even a drive-through at the McDonald Street location for your convenience. They also cater events from 1 to 1,000 people for business meetings, school events, weddings, or whatever the occasion may be. 4838 Dewdney Ave Regina, Sk. 306.543.8686 (On the corner of Dewdney & Royal across from Luther College) M-Th: 7am to 11pm Friday: 7am to 12am Sat: 8:30am to 12am Sun: 9:30am to 11pm
