From musician Andy Shauf, to authors Melanie Schnell and Yann Martel, we are privileged to listen to their tales of triumph. Who could have imagined that Martel’s novel, Life of Pi, is now an academy award winning movie? I had the chance to speak with him about his philosophical views and opinions on the art of storytelling.

New Hair,

New You Making a decision for a new look always includes getting a new style or haircut at the salon. Some people bring in photos of looks they want and most have an idea of the image they want to portray. Your style should be a reflection of your lifestyle and your personality. So what style best reflects your personality?

Traditional— Conservative A blunt cut is always professional to suit your style. A classic look that is always in vogue and looks good whether relaxing on the weekend or taking control in the boardroom.

Outgoing—Popular You are full of energy and want a bouncy style to go along with it. Choose a cut past your shoulders with long layers that you can curl for special occasions. Undercuts are a great way for your stylist to help your hair have body and bounce.

Funny and Confident

Efficient Go-Getter

Pick a short flirty style with highlights and lots of layers to match your vibrant personality. Short hair always looks healthy just like you do.

A shoulder length style that has a lot of layers will fit your no-nonsense approach to life with wash and wear hair. There is little fuss involved and it always looks well groomed. Keeping your hair at shoulder length also allows you to pull it back into a pony tail for times when you just want it off your face to do those tasks at hand.

The right hairstyle can help you approach your day with confidence. Keep in mind with the holiday season whether you will want a formal up-do or even embellish your current style with some hairpieces.

Artistic and Modern—Likes Fashion Go for a creative haircut that reflects your style. Think Betty Paige with an edge. Choose multiple colours like pink or purple tips or highlights on multilayers that you can use gel to spike or blow dry flat. Bangs are in style now. Big bold bangs that create a fringe almost down to your lashes to highlight those twinkling eyes of yours.

Whatever you decide, there are some great stylists in Estevan and Weyburn that will be happy to help. FLEW

“Hair is what frames who you are and who you want to be. Your hair is the best expression of your personality. Your hair is simply what makes you go from having a bad day to a great one.” Alicia Austin, Owner of Capelli Salon Studio

Fashion trends and selections For all ages By Doris Wang photos Doug sully

L

ocated on Fourth Street of Estevan, Fashion Sense has been helping people find the right clothes and accessories for over a decade. Opening its doors in 2000, owner Tammi Steffensen’s goal is to provide clothing for women and men at affordable prices so the residents of Estevan don’t have to travel outside of the community to shop. Since then, the store has expanded its product line to include footwear, accessories and clothing for people from teenagers to those aged 90 and above. Not only are their products affordable, but they are also upscale and contemporary.

10

FineLifestyles

Estevan/Weyburn

The newly renovated Fashion Sense store is wheel-chair accessible and offers a unique “on approval” service, where the customers can take items home to try on to decide whether they wish to keep the clothing. Customers can bring back what they don’t like. “We don’t want them to just make a quick decision. We want them to purchase something they feel good in,” says Tammi. The “on approval” service is especially popular among men who work in the oil fields around Estevan and often don’t have time to try the clothing in the store. Tammi and her staff are also willing to take clothing to those who are unable

to make it to Fashion Sense during store hours. Upon request, the staff will put together what the customer needs and deliver it. It just takes a phone call. With its open space and high ceilings, Fashion Sense has a classy and chic atmosphere. The eager staff are readily available to assist you with all your style needs. For Tammi, making her customers feel welcome and comfortable is top priority. “I always encourage my staff to greet customers and not to ignore anyone.” The inventory at Fashion Sense is continuously changing to make sure the

customers have a wide selection of styles from which to choose. “Quite a few staff members contribute to ordering because we have such a wide customer base,” Tammi says. Currently, they carry Buffalo ladies’ and men’s jeans and apparel, Billabong, Hurley, Tribal, Jag, Alison Sheri, Lana Lee, Libra, footwear by Clarks, Bos. & Co, Taxi. Staff members Gail Hilstrom, Roni-Sue Coulter, and Bonnie and Bob Kvamme assist with the ordering. The Kvammes, both high school teachers, assist with clothing selections for teenagers and men while the store manager, Gail, is the ladies’ wear and accessories expert. The staff are critical to the store’s success. Fashion Sense staff members, also including Denise and Elaine Taylor, are ready and willing to help customers in any capacity. Wilma Ward, playfully referred to as the “lifesaver”, takes care of the bookkeeping that goes on behind the scenes. “I have the most dependable, dedicated and fabulous staff. Each brings her or his own flare to the store,” Tammi states. Over the past decade, Fashion Sense has added purses, hats, gloves and jewellery to its stock. Tammi says she feels extremely rewarded when helping her customers. “When we put customers in the right outfits, it makes them feel good about themselves; it gives them both comfort and confidence,” she explains. “I get the most pleasure from somebody enjoying wearing the clothing we provide.” FLEW

O ”

ur motivation for our new Regina super-optical store was borne from irony, in a way,” says Stephen McIntosh, president of the Factory Optical and Optiks International group of companies.

Stephen McIntosh, owner

12

FineLifestyles

Estevan/Weyburn

“For the past five years, we’ve been building massive, high-end, and very well-appointed stores in Alberta and British Columbia. We realized that while we started in Regina, live in Regina, and have our head office in Regina, we didn’t have a flagship store in Regina,” says McIntosh, referring to the super-optical store that they have recently opened on University Park Drive in southeast Regina, across the street from their former location of 13 years. “There’s much more to these stores than just size and esthetics,” McIntosh continues. “The waterfalls and fireplaces are nice-to-haves, but increasing the size of our store by 400 per cent suddenly gave us the luxury of bringing in many new high-end frame lines, rolling our Eyecandy Optiks business inside, centralizing some of our lab functions, and introducing

an on-site optometric practice. It’s an attractive and considerably more functional venue.” The new Regina store location also serves a wider purpose. By introducing so much new frame product, the store is positioned to feed their other two Regina locations (and even their Moose Jaw, Weyburn, and Estevan stores) with product they would not otherwise have access to. For example it also becomes the place a Rochdale Boulvard customer will be directed to if they cannot find their perfect frame. The new store represents the seventh “super-optical” store built by the group. “It’s really the way we’re moving forward,“ says McIntosh. “When entering a new market, we always have a decision to make: do we go in with multiple stores all at once to

justify the advertising spend, or do we do something different? We choose something different, which happens to be the largest optical stores in Canada.” The Factory Optical and Optiks International group has been active. Beyond the new Regina location, they have built big new stores in Prince Albert and Moose Jaw over the past 18 months to replace smaller older ones. “Through our FO Safety Eyewear Company, we are proud to announce the addition last month of our 100th corporate client.” While continuing to open stores at a feverish pace, they are about to move their contact lens re-order business online, and are also working at an online frame concept—a large departure from what is currently being done. They believe that the retail optical marketplace is in the early stages of a material transformation. “We’ve been anticipating this for some time, and the initial manifest of this planning was completing our own fullydigitalized Free Form lens fabrication lab last year. It allows us to produce worldclass digital Rx lenses at a fraction of the cost that retailers pay who cannot afford to do what we’ve done,” says McIntosh. “We’re now receiving calls monthly from one-off independents who want to sell their businesses. I’m not sure anyone in Canada is opening stores like we are. Consumers are now facing the issue when buying prescription eyewear about whether that retailer is going to be around in two years when they need warranty. Now is not the time for us to be complacent.” This business is far from complacent— visit their new University Park Drive store to discover more. ith its numerous fashion selections, from fashionable stretch jeans to maternity bras, Streetwear is Estevan’s destination for women aged 30 to 90. Owner Clara Freitag never imagined that she would run a retail fashion store when she retired in 2011, after working 30 years as a nurse.

When Clara heard that a local women’s wear store was up for sale, she bought it in a spur-of-the-moment inspiration. With little knowledge about retail and no idea how to run a till, Clara decided to take ownership of the store located in downtown Estevan. Currently, the store has one part-time, and one casual staff member.

Clara has learned a lot about styles and trends since taking over the shop but her background in healthcare also has an impact on the items she chooses to sell in the store. Along with breastfeeding bras and camisoles, as well as maternity briefs, Streetwear also has mastectomy bras with no underwire, seams or hooks. “It’s ideal for women who have had

surgery and who want a comfortable alternative to what is on the market.” At Streetwear, you can find all kinds of attire. Clara’s goal is to make women of all ages and shapes look and feel comfortable and beautiful with brand names such as Just B Jeans by Carreli, Miss Nikky’s casual wear and Piccadilly Fashions. “They enhance a woman’s figure, make her look pretty and feel good about herself,” says Clara Streetwear has lingerie lines including Shapeez bras; Spencer mastectomy bras, breastfeeding bras, nursing camisoles; Knockout Panties; and Booty Boosters. Clara takes pride in giving the best service to repeat and new customers. Though this is a new experience for her, Clara is determined to meet all the demands and challenges that may come her way. Owners, Jeremy and Carol Ross, are well-known members of the community and aim to provide quality service and products to their customers. Cowtown is the only store in the area to offer exclusive veterinarian-approved pet food brands such as Royal Canin and Medi-Cal. According to store manager, Morgan Goertzen, they are the leading brands in the world for pet nutrition. Other best-quality brands of pet food found at the store include First Mate –

the second most popular brand in the store, closely followed by Orijen, Eagle Pack, Go Natural and Horizon. The store also has the largest selection of collars and leashes for your pet in the area. Who says you can’t work hard and look good doing it? From jeans, to shirts to footwear, the store has all styles of clothing for all ages. The Tin Haul boots are exclusively sold by Cowtown. “They have what’s called an ‘obvious sole’

which has a silkscreened picture on the bottom of the boot,” says Morgan. “They offer any pattern from tie-dye to lightning stitches.” Since opening more than a year ago, Cowtown has expanded its clothing department. The store now carries ladies’ jeans with brand names such as Rock 47, Cowgirl Tuff, Iron Horse and Cruel Denim. You can also find tank tops, hoodies, belts, jewelry, fire-resistant denim, casual shirts and CSA Work Boots. Cowtown has a wide selection of kids clothing too. The store also has accessories and supplies for people who live on farms or are involved in rodeo. Two of Cowtown’s employees—Morgan and Jeremy— are part of Canadian Cowboys Rodeo Association, and many part-time employees are in high school rodeo. Cowtown has the widest selection of tack for horses. “Horses are a very important part of people’s lives,” says Patrick. “And they’re an important part of our store as well. We have almost everything that has to do with horses and the Western lifestyle —whether it’s for rodeo, pleasure riding or just working on the ranch.” The staff members are knowledgeable and experienced in their field. Most of them have been there since the store’s opening and were trained by the staff at Prairie Animal Health Centre. Store Manager, Morgan Goertzen, says her staff had contributed greatly to Cowtown’s success in Estevan and she couldn’t have asked for a better team. Chief Operating Officer, Patrick Chopik, says he appreciates the support from all the customers in the store’s first year of operation. He is looking forward to bringing in more contemporary products to serve his ever-growing customer base. FLEW Cowtown Estevan 501 Nesbitt Drive Estevan 306.634.3755

NOW WHAT? By AvivA ZAck

e’s gotten down on one knee and popped the big question. You’ve excitedly answered “Yes!” Once the euphoria of your new engagement has subsided, the reality of all the work that goes into planning a wedding begins to set in. Rather than be riddled with panic attacks for the upcoming months, here are some tips to help you get organized as you start to plan your big event. The first thing to do is make a draft guest list to determine the approximate size of your wedding. This will help you with your next important task: putting together a budget. In Canada, the average budget for a wedding is between $25,000— $27,000, according to Wedding Planners Magazine. In Saskatoon, couples tend to spend a few thousand less than the current national average. Whether a bigger or smaller budget, discuss what you are comfortable spending. Do you need time to save? Will there be relatives helping subsidize the cost? Knowing what you are willing and able to spend may force you to pare down your guest list if it isn’t in line with the size of your wallet. Armed with a budget and guest count, the search for a venue can begin. It is important to find a venue for both ceremony and reception that not only accommodates your numbers, but also the feel you want for your celebration. Approaching venues with an approximate time of year rather than a single date will make it much easier to find a venue. The popularity of Friday and Sunday weddings in Saskatoon has increased quite a bit over the past few years, especially for those planning in a shorter time frame, since many venues are booked a year or more in advance. Peak times of year for weddings in Saskatoon are no longer just spring and summer. More and more couples are opting for a fall wedding during September or October, when harvest is done and the leaves are in vibrant shades of red, yellow and orange. With the date booked and venue secured, the planning can begin in earnest. The first vendor to consider is a photographer. Although there are a

20

FineLifestyles

Estevan/Weyburn

great many options in Saskatoon, all with varying levels of experience and many different packages, the photos are what will last long after the last dance is danced, so it is important to find a good one. Since your photographer will be spending most of your wedding day by your side, having a conversation to ensure your personalities and visions mesh is a good idea before putting down a deposit. Many local photographers book up a year in advance on popular weekends. Other vendors you may then start searching for include a band, DJ, florist, officiant, baker, caterer, videographer, transportation company, stationer, ceremony musicians, a bridal salon, tux rentals and hair salon. If the thought of all this seems daunting, there is help. There are wedding planners in Saskatoon that can help guide you by finding available venues and reputable vendors that suit your needs. Wedding planners can also assist putting the many details together on your wedding day, running the show from behind the scenes so you can enjoy your celebration. Another task wedding planners can help with is wedding décor. While some couples—who are we kidding: brides—are avid do-it-yourselfers, some don’t have the time nor the aptitude to put together elements that will ultimately create the desired ambiance for a wedding reception. Popular for wedding décor in Saskatoon the past two wedding seasons has been purple, in shades ranging from eggplant to lavender. Paired with burlap for a rustic feel or with satin linens for a regal wedding, purple is a very versatile wedding hue that also matches well with many other colours. According to websites like Pintrest, the up and coming colours in weddings are predicted to be greens in shades like mint and emerald. Colours are not the only thing trendy when it comes to wedding décor. Themes are also making a comeback, including the Roarin’ 20s complete with feathers and flapper dresses; rustic with barn board and moss and the ceremony taking place in a barn; and vintage with lace and meaningful heirlooms incorporated into the décor. No matter the trends, a wedding should be a personalized celebration, tailor-made to each couple in everything from location to the vendors you choose to your colours and style. Allowing your personalities to shine through and adding details big or small that speak to who you are as a couple will ensure that your wedding is your perfect celebration. FLEW

teacher by trade, Adrian Poirier has a second passion: reflexology. As a child, any of Adrian’s ailments were attended to by a neighbour, who practiced reflexology. As an adult, he provides this treatment to his own family. In 2008, Adrian became certified, established Zone One Reflexology and has been working as a foot reflexologist ever since. An ancient technique, reflexology is a natural healing art that is based on the principle that reflexes in the feet correspond to muscles, joints, glands and organs in the body. As a practitioner, Adrian explains, “I stimulate healing. The human body is equipped with everything it needs to take care of itself; yet, with our busy lives we are prone to more stress and have poor sleeping and eating habits. This eventually affects our body rendering it dysfunctional and ill. I’m like a reset button for your body so it performs as it is intended.” Adrian operates out of his home. “I believe that my clients relax more when they can get away from their busy lives.” However, if people have mobility issues, Adrian will go to a client’s home. Experienced and highly credible, Adrian practices on people of all ages from babies to elderly individuals. For those who are critically-ill and perhaps cannot afford treatments, Adrian will attend to those clients for a donation. HOW I CHANGED MY LIFE AND WENT FROM TIRED TO HEALTHY & HAPPY

A

t my heaviest, I was 321 pounds. I was sluggish, it was hard to move, and getting motivation was really difficult. My back hurt, my knees hurt, my ankles hurt—I was very uncomfortable all the time. My self-esteem was really low. I always felt like people were staring at me, talking about me, making fun of me. I was afraid to eat in front of people, and many wouldn’t give me the time of day. Now, not only do I feel completely different, but people treat me differently. I’m down to 205 pounds; I look great and I feel great. I have tons of energy, and every day is like a new experience. Weight Loss Forever has been amazing. Even going for surgery was a terrific experience. The facilities are phenomenal; the clinic is clean and the staff is kind. When I got there, they were waiting on the stairs to welcome me. I’ve been through many surgeries, and this was by far the best encounter. I have so much faith in the staff, I’m going to go back there for follow-up plastic surgery because I trust them and the facilities more than I do my health care here at home. Now, I don’t miss any support group—I look forward to them. I can call my facilitator any time, text any time. Whenever I have a question, she has the answers for me. If she doesn’t have the answers, she finds them for me.

“I feel great!” Brian, After losing 116lbs

Having seen me go through this process, watching me get happier and healthier, my brother is following in my footsteps. He’s in line to get the surgery too. That’s the best endorsement I can give.

FROM NURSE PRACTITIONER TO NATIONAL FIGURE COMPETITOR I never thought of myself as someone who would be interested in breast augmentation, but after I turned 40, I noticed things were starting to look different. Over the course of losing weight, getting older and competing in body and figure competitions, my breasts changed. I just wasn’t satisfied with that part of myself any more. Weight Loss Forever sponsored a figure competition I took part in, which is how I became aware that that they did plastic surgery as well. I began doing some research and talking to surgeons. The more I considered my options, the more I leaned toward WLF. I liked everybody at the office; they just gave me a good feeling. As a nurse practitioner and through my work in health care, I had no qualms about travelling for surgery. Having a fair bit of experience in plastic surgery, I felt very comfortable with the standards. Not only was the decision to go with WLF easy, but it was financially the best option as well. I couldn’t be happier with my decision. I was so impressed with everything—the organization, the clinic, the staff, the accommodationseverybody was so kind and informative. I’m currently training for the Canadian National figure competition. It’s my third show and I’ve won the other two. I look fantastic and I am so thrilled with the way things turned out. I let the surgeon guide me with size and he nailed it on the head. He was so knowledgeable and experienced, I was able to put my trust in him completely, and he did an amazing job. What sets Weight Loss Forever apart is that they go the extra mile to make sure you’re happy and their work is top notch. They’re absolutely fantastic.

Cindy’s life before surgery was a constant struggle. Food was the enemy, exercise was hard, and every day tasks became a challenge. I’d done every diet, tried every “as seen on TV” exercise tool, but even if I lost the weight, it would come back plus a few pounds. This cycle made me constantly discouraged and depressed, always self-conscious. While I was a naturally cheerful and social person on the outside, inside I was hurting and very sad.

Cindy, before losing 87 lbs with WLF

As a nurse, I knew a Center of Excellence was important for my safety and I was opposed to adding something to my body or rerouting anything. I met some of the Weight Loss Forever staff at a tradeshow and expressed my concerns. They told me about the “sleeve”, which just removes the stretched out part of your stomach, which seemed like common sense to me. After a lot of thought and research, I decided to do it. I didn’t care what other people thought about me—it came down to how I felt about myself. It is the best decision I’ve ever made. Weight Loss Forever was fantastic. My facilitator was supporting me the whole time, answering questions and providing guidance. The support from WLF makes the experience so much easier.

After the surgery, the weight started falling off. I started having more energy, and I decided to start toning up. Exercising was actually fun because it wasn’t such a struggle. I spent time learning about nutrition, and I even adapted my role at work to focus more on preventative medicine. It has really changed my whole world. I’ve never been in this great of shape in my life! When I look at the before and after photos, I realize how overweight I was. I never saw myself as that big, and I can identify with myself better now. I have better self-image, and I live a far healthier lifestyle. While most patients that get surgery experience no side effects, I was one of the few (less than 1%) who did. fter a grueling two-year review by the American Surgical Review Corporation, Weight Loss Forever (WLF)’s hospital was designated as an International Bariatric Center of Excellence, one of only 18 in the world . WLF met and exceeded stringent requirements and was awarded in three areas: the hospital, the surgeon, and the bariatric program. Melanie Wildman, President & CEO of WLF, says, “We’re a world-renowned bariatric hospital with exceedingly high standards, excellent patient care and compassionate support. What is at stake is our patients’ health and well being, and our license. It’s our dedication to our patients that make us one of the top 10 bariatric hospitals in the world,” she adds. WLF’s Chief Bariatric Surgeon is Mayo Clinic-trained Dr. Liza Pompa, MD, Ph.D, AFACS. She is board-certified in the United States and is the first female in the world to be awarded “Surgeon of Excellence” and was recently recognized in Newsweek Magazine as a leader in bariatric surgery. WLF encourages people to do careful research and has developed the guide How to Research Your Surgeon. Patient safety is the primary consideration.

Their state-of-the-art hospital and medical staff are held to rigorous standards and unannounced, independent inspections, which is the only way for patients to know if their surgeon or hospital is legitimate and safe. Obesity is the #1 preventable cause of death in Canada. According to the Canadian Medical Association, diet and exercize have not proven to be effective in the treatment of severe obesity. Research shows weight loss surgery is the only permanent and effective treatment of obesity. WLF’s award winning program gives patients the the tools they need to achieve long-term success - a safe surgery is just one part of a life-long solution.

When your pet arrives for an annual physical examination, veterinarians investigate all of the joints to check for swelling, instability and pain to identify problem areas. At this point your veterinarian may recommend x-rays to visualize the joints themselves for osteoarthritic changes and to rule out serious diseases such as fractures, dislocations and cancers affecting the bone. After your veterinarian diagnoses osteoarthritis, they will formulate a treatment plan for your pet that will work for the whole family. Osteoarthritis pain is best controlled by using a multimodal approach including regular exercise, weight loss, neutraceuticals diet supplements, disease modifying arthritis drugs and pain medication.

early everyone has experienced how uncomfortable it is to be stiff and sore after a hard day of work, but often a pet in pain goes unnoticed due to their stoic nature. Osteoarthritis is a complex degenerative condition that involves inflammation of one or more joints that worsens with age. By most estimates, 90 per cent of cats over 10 years of age and 20 per cent of dogs regardless of age are affected by osteoarthritis (OA).

Weightloss

Our pets’ joints have similarities to our own, and therefore we often share the same symptoms for arthritis pain such as limping or stiffness. Other signs your pet may show can include decreased

Neutraceuticals

If an animal is overweight their extra pounds apply more force on those arthritic joints causing the disease and pain to increase. The easiest step is to cut down on those yummy treats and do measured scheduled feedings. Some pets require prescription weight loss diets or other medication to aid in weight loss. It’s also very important to maintain muscle mass, and therefore controlled exercise is an integral part of therapy.

Neutraceuticals are defined as food or food products that have health or medical benefits. These are often

found in isolated nutrients, dietary supplements or herbal formulations. Omega fatty acids and glucosamine/ chondroitin are widely used for their anti-inflammatory properties and providing the building blocks needed to repair damaged cartilage.

Disease modifying arthritis drugs Disease modifying arthritis drugs slow or alter the progression of osteoarthritis. These medications are often given by an injection and contain poly sulfated glycosaminoglycans (PSGAG). This compound, once injected, helps to prevent cartilage breakdown, decreases inflammation and provides the building blocks to repair damaged cartilage.

Pain medications Finally we come to pain medications that give fast relief to help make exercise and weight loss more comfortable. A very common class of pain medications are the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID), which help to reduce the inflammation that leads to pain and cartilage destruction. Other medications can be added to tailor a treatment plan specifically for your pets’ needs. If you are concerned about your pet slowing down or showing signs of osteoarthritis please call for an examination at Prairie Animal Health Centre. At PAHC we are committed to maintaining a long and pain free relationship between you and your pet. FLEW

ndy Shauf is a Regina-based musician, singer and songwriter. His 2008 debut album, Darker Days, was met with local celebration, as Andy made a name for himself in Western Canada. The bashful and nervous Shauf is known for having a captivating stage presence, poetic lyrics, range of musical skills and downright angelic voice. His latest solo album, The Bearer of Bad News, has bridged his transition from pop-like composer to brooding storyteller. I had a chance to speak with him about his outlook on Western Canada’s music scene, and his journey as a young, new artist. Devin Pacholik: Who are you? Andy Shauf: Andy Shauf. Song writer from Regina, Saskatchewan. Born in Estevan.

DP: Tell me about your song writing. In your album The Bearer of Bad News, you tell a lot of stories, songs with narrative. AS: Song writing is something that I’ve done for a really long time. My main focus in music is song writing. I started writing story songs because I kind of realized my life is pretty repetitive, so I decided to make things up. I think you can do whatever you want in a story, so it’s kind of freeing. I don’t think too much about it though. It’s what works for me. My old songs were really simple. More upbeat. I wasn’t doing anything musically that interesting. I’ve been trying to put more space in the music. A song can get too crowed if there’s too much music. There’s not enough space for things to move organically. I leave everything in its own spot, so that instruments aren’t

stealing attention. Usually a story just comes out of the mood of the music. I guess it helps make more space so you can listen to the lyrics. There’s more of a focus on the lyrics these days. DP: How would you describe your music? AS: Slow and sad. I used to try and write pop songs that people would like to hear. Between my new album and old album there was four years. I shifted. It’s a different phase. DP: You have a few collaboration projects. What’s it like writing music with other people? Is there support in Saskatchewan? AS: Writing with other people is good, and it helps that to work with close friends. It’s a lot more comfortable. It’s different than being alone. The songs get

stronger and people add things that you wouldn’t have brought out. Sometimes my friends back me, like with the band I sometimes play with, Foxwarren. My friends, Avery Kissick, Dallas Bryson, Darryl Kissick and I got together, started writing songs, and we made an album. Western Canada is supportive. You meet with a lot of the same bands on the road. Everyone kind of goes on tour at the same time, so often you’re in the same city as your friends’ bands. The Saskatchewan music scene is pretty close knit group of people. You get lots of support from the people you meet playing shows. I’ve been playing here since the early 2000s, and I’ve met a lot of people. And they’re still coming to shows. I mostly write by myself a lot though. I like having control, and to be responsible for every single part

Photo Wake Own

of a song.

DP: What’s next for you?

It’s liberating to write music like that. You don’t have to explain to someone what you want because you can just do it. There’s never a miss-communication between myself and myself.

AS: Trying to get my album heard by other people. Foxwarren is putting out a new album soon. And, the Bearer of Bad News album is on vinyl, for those who like listening to vinyl.

DP: What’s touring like?

And touring. I am playing drums in the band Wake Owl. I am opening for most of the shows. We’ll be doing a month in the eastern States. And I will possibly be going to Europe in May for The Great Escape festival and some other shows. Not really sure where I want to go in Europe, exactly, but I would be starting in England.

AS: Interesting and not interesting. It’s cool. I enjoy seeing different places, but you basically just drive all day, play a show, get exhausted, and sometimes have beers. But I’m a tame guy so I don’t have any wild stories. I used to be on a label in the states, called P is for Panda. But I’ve since gone independent in Canada. I’ve been touring for a really long time, so it’s not hard for me to do shows Western Canada. But, for the states and Europe you need the help of a label to get your name out there.

Other than that, I’ll be making my own albums and recording. I like working alone. FLEW www.andyshauf.com

Yann Martel:

WRITING WITH TEETH BY FINE LIFESTYLES EDITOR DEVIN PACHOLIK PHOTOS PETER SOREL

I

t was a 2004 writer-in-residence position at the Saskatoon Public Library that brought writer Yann Martel and his wife, fellow author Alice Kuipers, to the city. It has been home ever since. Martel has reached international recognition for his work, namely his 2001 novel Life of Pi. In 2012 Life of Pi was released as a film. With director Ang Lee behind the project, the movie earned 11 nominations, including best picture, for the 85th Academy Awards. Life of Pi won four Oscars, the most of that year. Other work by Martel includes Beatrice and Virgil, Self and What Is Stephen Harper Reading?: Yann Martel's Recommended Reading for a Prime Minister and Book Lovers of All Stripes. Currently, Martel is working on his next novel, a tale of

three interconnected adventure stories spanning a century set in Portugal. Martel was kind enough to speak to me about the art of writing, his career and the success of Life of Pi. Devin Pacholik: Beatrice and Virgil opens with the writer character, Henry, recalling his career. We’re made to believe you are Henry. He mentions that “writers seldom become public figures.” What has your life become as a public figure? Do you see yourself as a public figure? Yann Martel: No I don’t. That’s the awkward thing when you make art as a public figure. It’s not only writers, it’s the same for rock stars and film stars: one thing that’s inherent in art, and sometimes people forget it, is that artists don’t represent anyone but themselves. The sculptor, the composer, the singer feels

impelled to create something, and their creation is strictly a reflection of his or her experience of life. Artists are accountable to no one, which is a positive thing. Artists are free elements that can shed an unusual light on a society or problem. They are highly individual, but they resonate in a universal way. You can’t tether art or artists to a particular political purpose. In contrast to that, when an artist speaks, he or she has no right to speak for anyone but for themselves.

FineLifestyles

Estevan/Weyburn

39

No one elects artists. So, for example, Life of Pi has done incredibly well, and now there’s this movie out. But, people chose the book, they didn’t choose me. They may say, ‘I really like the Life of Pi,’ but what Martel has to say about this or that issue is not their concern. With the Stephen Harper campaign, I’m doing a political campaign, but it rests on the books I send him and the letters I write; otherwise, I have no legitimacy. DP: What about when it comes to writing something controversial? Tell me about Beatrice and Virgil, [that deals with the Holocaust], and Life of Pi, that discusses foreign religions, cultures and events. Can you speak to the idea of ownership and truth? Do you have some responsibility there? YM: All anyone has is their experience of

40

FineLifestyles

Estevan/Weyburn

reality. Artists try to convey that to others. Overwhelmingly, the Jews are the victims of the Holocaust. They are likely the carriers of its authenticity, but it doesn’t mean they own the truth, nor do I think they want to own the truth. To own something means you’re wholly responsible for it, and I don’t believe anyone wants to be wholly responsible for a historical event. In fact, we need as many different perspectives on an event. It’s like saying that slavery should only be written about by African Americans. The fact is that belief excludes non-African Americans, and their insights on slavery. People on the other side of the divide can be insightful. Another example is feminism. Feminism primarily concerns women. They are the victims of sexism, but it doesn’t mean that

men cannot be insightful. After all, men are the ones who are mostly guilty of sexism. In any subject matter or event, we need as great a range of diversity and opinions as possible. The ones that are asinine or have nothing to say, you should ignore them. But, among that cacophony of voices, there will be some that are insightful. And so, the Holocaust should not be just a Jewish matter, in part because the Jews were the victims. If anyone should be involved the most, it is the victimizers. You want people who are potential victimizers to discuss these events. What does it mean when people are tarred and feathered in a negative, stereotypical way? What is the danger of that? What is the danger of a generalization? Of slander? Of not having the rule of law? Of not having a properly formed police force? All of these issues must be widely

discussed. The kinds of people who can do this are artists, as I said, because they’re not accountable. They say what they have to say, and they say it well.

DP: What is it about metaphor and the art of storytelling that helps us deal with trauma? What is it about metaphor that is so important in a book like Life of Pi?

We need many, many representations of a past event. Through many representations we come to understand something. The Second World War is the perfect example. There are war comedies, romances, war dramas to war documentaries. Some of those [representations] are complete travesties of what the war experience is actually like, but that’s all right because as long as we’re talking about those representations it’s a way of discussing those events and bringing them close to us. And that’s fine.

YM: Metaphor is an incredibly concise way to capture a very complex reality. A metaphor brings us closer to something that is far away. For example, Animal Farm by Orwell is a wonderful metaphor on Stalin’s Russia. Most of us know very little about Russian history, unless you happen to be Russian. Most of us don’t know the details of Stalin, when he was born or when he died. We have the vague idea that he was one of the big ogres of the Twentieth Century.

We should apply that way of thinking to other horrors, like the Holocaust, genocides or rape. Debate is what you want—artists aid in that debate.

What Orwell does, in a concise fashion, is get to the essence of what Stalin did to the Russians. [Animal Farm] conveys it in a delightful fable. Even if most people don’t know anything about Russian

history or Stalinism, by reading Animal Farm you get an idea of that history: the use of coercion, disinformation, propaganda, secret police and twisting the truth—all these things are in Animal Farm in essence, in a concise way. People are still reading Animal Farm, but very few people are reading Russian history. Metaphor is a light way to carry a heavy message. Even overused expressions, like ‘sticking out like a sore thumb,’ or ‘lock, stock and barrel’—these phrases are a quick way for the writer to let the reader know what we are talking about. Metaphor helps make things stick out, and they capture very complicated realities in a simple way. They can also distort the reality. DP: That said, transcribing your words into a film, when talking about Life of Pi, you told me at the premier of the movie

FineLifestyles

Estevan/Weyburn

41

Devin Pacholik with author, Yann Martel, at the premier of the movie Life of Pi

that, ‘adaptation took over in a way.’ What changed in the Life of Pi movie? YM: Words are good at conveying emotion and action—such as, ‘he or she saw’ or ‘he or she said’—those phrases capture what has happened. What words aren’t good at is describing the visual. It is laborious, and in many ways it is ineffectual. For example, in Life of Pi, there is a description of a solar still. Most people haven’t a clue what a solar still is. Trying to describe this device—that captures seawater and evaporates it so that the water doesn’t hold sodium and is therefore sweet water—is difficult. But someone who watches the movie, they know instantly what it is. We also tend to believe what we see. In the book, I spend dozens of pages building the credibility of a tiger being

42

FineLifestyles

Estevan/Weyburn

on a lifeboat. I have to explain that he is seasick, territorial—all kinds of devices to suspend the readers’ disbelief. An image makes us believe the tiger on the lifeboat because that is what we’re looking at. Images are useful because they [give credibility] to things that are unbelievable; they are concise. They take many pages from a book and make them understandable in an instant. Conversely, images are not good at conveying subtle thoughts, unless you have a character looking at the camera and speaking paragraphs. So, the discussions about religion in Life of Pi, which take place over many pages, would take hours to convey in the movie, and that would bore the viewer. A movie imposes itself upon you. When you go to a cinema you are a prisoner for two hours. You cannot pause the movie to think, whereas the book you can pause and go back.

The movie also sets characters a certain way. You have no choice but to see Pi as the actor, Suraj Sharma. In the book, the words leave what Pi looks like up to your imagination. When you are reading, you are creating, and that in a way makes it more engaging. This is the loss in a movie. Reading is an act of co-creation. In a sense then, the movie flattens us; but, since [movies] are so dazzling it adds something else. We are visual animals, and film offers another kind of aesthetic experience that books don’t. I liked watching the Life of Pi movie. It was a neat experience, seeing that tiger in the Pacific. DP: I would like to talk about your success as a writer. You are living a rare life, as a working writer. What is the relationship between art and commodity? Does it cheapen anything for you as an artist?

YM: Art is communication. It’s an expression. It’s not reality. No one writes to put their work in a drawer. We all want that drawer to be opened, so other people will read our stories. When you create art, you do it to communicate with someone, whether they are in the present or future. [Art] is an attempt to share your experience of life with others. So, in that sense, the process of making art involves some kind of commodification. Even the most aggressive, antisocial grunge rock musician will have an album; they will play on a stage in a commercial venue. There is a problem though when you try to imitate your success—reproduce a formula. Ultimately, the best antidote to commodification is an artist should do what he or she believes they have to do. The perfect example is what I did after I wrote Life of Pi. I wrote Beatrice and Virgil,

a novel on the Holocaust. This is not the way to follow up a huge commercial success. Mostly, people believe, when it comes to art about the Holocaust, we’ve been there, we’ve done that. Every few years there will be a breakout book, a new diary that will interest people. But usually Holocaust stuff is a particular product that appeals to a particular crowd. With Beatrice and Virgil, I had to do it. The danger in being an artist is you get an appetite for success. I am eternally delighted for the success of Life of Pi, in part because it made money and I don’t have to worry about feeding myself, but mostly because it gave me some wonderful experiences. As far as the movie goes, it is a secondary product. To me, the book is what I made. I suppose in some quarters, the success of the book has led to the dismissal of

it, as if people think ‘it is successful, and therefore it cannot be good,’ or ‘it’s middlebrow.’ They forget that the book about a religious boy was written at a time when people drip with irony when they write about religion. It also celebrates the zoo, and some people cannot stand the idea of jails for animal. It doesn’t have the unity of time or place either: parts of it are in the zoo, the Pacific, Canada, Mexico— so it’s scattered all over the place. Yet Life of Pi is an odd, original novel that holds together even though it breaks all kinds of rules. But people are suspicious of it because it is a commercial success, especially because of the religious aspects and the fact it came out on 9/11. People supposed it was an attempt to make it about the clash of civilizations, but this wasn’t in my mind. I wrote the story before 9/11 and by coincidence it came out on September 11, 2001. In

my experience, big success leads to the perception that [Life of Pi] was made as a commodity. But it started with a spark and led to four years of writing. DP: Your wife, Alice Kuipers, is also a best-selling author. Do you speak about your work together? YM: We don’t edit together, but we do speak about our work. Right now I’m stuck at a part in my next novel, and we talk about things like that. We come from different approaches. She is a young adult writer, so it helps that we’re not playing the same instrument. She also respects the written word. I don’t think I could be with someone who never reads books or cares about literature. It would be like being a musician living someone who is tone-deaf. It’s good to be with someone who loves words.

44

FineLifestyles

Estevan/Weyburn

DP: Tell about your project with Stephan Harper.

DP: What excites you about the writing landscape in Saskatchewan and Canada?

YM: I did a project for four years where I sent the Prime Minister a book every two weeks. I was trying to point out the importance of the arts, that it’s not just for entertainment. The arts are a way of thinking. They can be more than just entertaining; they also elevate, stimulate and challenge. We need that to be good citizens.

YM: Canada is a diverse place. It is welcoming of different voices. I remember when I was a finalist for the [Man Booker Prize], half of the list were Canadians. One journalist pointed out that three of the Canadians on the list, including myself, were not in fact born in Canada, but I think that is typically Canadian. Canadian novelists speak the voices of different countries.

Our elites especially need the arts. We want our elites to be well-rounded people, to experience life beyond their narrow views. They need to travel. They need to read, which is another form of travel. A leader who never travels and never reads is Stephan Harper. It’s very dangerous and upsetting when the people leading us live narrow lives.

Other than that, in the practical dayto-day way, I’m just one writer who is from Saskatchewan. I love the physical landscape. I’ve had good reviews and terrible reviews, but I just keep on doing my thing. FLEW

Book Reviews By Devin Pacholik

Melanie Shnell’s

while the sun is above us

G

reat books end and leave your mind in a chorus of conflicting emotions. While the Sun is Above Us is one of those books. Melanie Schnell understands the author’s role is to give attention to details, reveal interesting characters, and the most importantly, to tell a good story. This story takes place in Southern Sudan circa 2003 during the civil war, the Darfur Genocide. During this time Sudanese governmentbacked militias carry out the murder, rape and destruction of the country’s own people. Their goal is to eliminate the Sudanese Liberation Movement (SLM) and the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), rebel groups seeking independence. Yet to experience long-term peace, this tumultuous conflict is still ongoing, and factored into the division of Sudan into two separate nations. Schnell, a travelled writer who grew up on a farm in the southeast of Saskatchewan, describes a desperate country, one that warps morals and forces people to murder and steal for survival. The people of Sudan hunger and thirst, always.

While the Sun is Above Us juxtaposes a white woman from Canada, Sandra, and a tribal Dinka woman from Southern Sudan, Adut. They are both around the same age, about 28-30, but that is essentially one of their few commonalities. Sandra’s life, by comparison to Adut’s, is one of luxury, despite going through a bad break-up and a bout of wanting to ‘find’ oneself. I don’t mean to be flippant in describing Sandra, but her problems are laughable (though touchingly told by Schnell) compared to Adut. Adut is the mother of several children. A proud Dinka woman, Adut lives with her husband and the rest of her family members in mud huts in a village in Southern Sudan. The war, escalating and moving closer to them, threatens to destroy Adut’s family and their meagre possessions. The war finds them. Adut is taken from her village, watches the murder of many, and loses her husband and children. She is taken to the North and made a slave for eight years. Adut is regularly beaten and raped, and bares the children of her victimizer. Sandra, needing to discover a meaningful purpose, decides to volunteer

in Sudan after reading a magazine article on the conflict. She takes the article clipping with her, wanting to somehow meet the woman in the photo on the page. While the Sun is Above Us is nightmarish and dense in its language and descriptions. I’m reminded of Cormac McCarthy’s The Road or Lawrence Hill’s The book of Negroes. While the Sun is Above Us is a survival story set in a dark place and time. The characters’ small triumphs—a sip of cold water or the taste of fruit—cause existential joy as we read them. And then, like the executioner pulling the noose, Schnell tests our trust, fills us with fear. Characters are deceptive and greedy, all in the name of survival. Good deeds are made suspicious during war. Finally, I must say, While the Sun is Above Us has one of the best endings I have read. Schnell’s build-up draws the reader closer and closer, until the final unforgettable and captivating conclusion. FLEW

Hit tHe Road: YouR SummeR of RVing By Cathie Watson

D

iscovering the beauty that a Saskatchewan summer presents can be as easy as getting in, buckling up and letting the adventure begin. Well, it can be under the right circumstances. Now, I am not referring to cramming everyone in the family four-door sedan, where legs can not be stretched out for fear of tipping over the cooler (usually found crammed in between the back and front seats). With the kids fighting one another for leg and elbow room and the poor dog panting and whimpering, your trip can become a chore, not a pleasure, and rob you of the calm environment conducive to enjoying the scenery. Right? Sound familiar? Remind you of other trips you have taken? Then maybe it is time to head to an RV dealer and check out what

46

FineLifestyles

Estevan/Weyburn

options might exist to make your future road travels more comfortable, enjoyable and memorable. There are several things to keep in mind when you consider what type of RV would be appropriate for your needs. But before you get to choosing, there are some questions to ask yourself: • How many people do you need to accommodate? • How many drivers will be sharing that duty and what equipment do they feel comfortable operating? • Will you primarily be making long or short trips (or a combo)? Or are you a “destination” vacationer with the desire for some sightseeing along the way? • How much storage room, especially refrigerated, do you require?

• Will you be doing the majority of cooking inside the RV or on the outdoor barbecue? • What types of activities do you enjoy, and what equipment do you need to bring with you? • How will you keep the kids entertained during the trip and after you reach your destination? • In the event of poor weather, do you want to have entertainment in the RV (for example, a video game system, satellite TV or internet)? • What is the towing capacity of your vehicle? • What is your budget? Having considered your needs and wants, remember that there are two broad categories of RVs: towable and motorized. Each have distinct features, advantages and benefits. Towable RVs are designed to be unhitched when you arrive at a campsite, which allows you use of your vehicle while on site. This option is great if you need to

head into the closest town to pick up any necessities you either forgot or have run out of, or when you just want the freedom to explore locally at your own pace. Keep in mind the rated towing capacity of your vehicle—or be prepared to rent a suitable one if your unit is not sufficient. Motorized RVs combine transportation and living quarters, and offer the added benefit of allowing towing of your personal vehicle, boat, or trailer, but are less maneuverable in some areas and some operators may find them more difficult to handle. One important thing to consider when going with a motorized model is how you plan get around when you arrive at your destination. A motorized RV may not be what you want to drive in remote areas or across poor roads. Once you consider what will meet your needs and what you are prepared to spend, then grab the family, cram them in the car and hit the local RV dealer. This time, however, you can promise them it could be the last time they need to travel this way. FLEW

AN OASIS AMONG THE GRAIN FIELDS Fishing, golfing and camping amidst nature’s beauty: Dr. Mainprize Community Park is a dream come true By Jade Ivan

I

magine fireflies filling the sky, sparks floating to the stars from the crackle of an open campfire, and children’s laughter cascading through the moonlit evening after a sunny day of golfing, relaxing at the beach, and fishing for that perfect walleye. Dr. William Mainprize made this dream a reality for southern Saskatchewan in 1959 when Dr. Mainprize Community Park opened. Located along the northwest shoreline of the Rafferty Reservoir, the park is an oasis among the flat grain fields, rocky grasslands of Saskatchewan. The park has become a retreat that every prairie soul needs. Waters from the Souris River, Roughbark River

and Jewell River meet up at Rafferty, making Mainprize Regional Park a getaway for adventure seekers, golfers and vacationers. The forged bays and inlets are a sanctuary for waterfowl, prairie land birds and wildlife.

Golf Course “A View Of Scotland” Alongside this natural treasure is one of Saskatchewan’s only link golf courses. The course was designed by John F. Robinson, an inspired architect. He took advantage of the rolling prairie wood-covered valleys on the shoreline of the Rafferty and the quiet country existence to mold a beautiful 18-hole links-style golf

course, which many describe as being like a “view of Scotland.” Large grass greens, irrigated fairways and the choice of four tee boxes on each fairway offer a one-of-a-kind experience. The course includes a putting green, driving range and three practice holes. All facilities are licensed and include Doc’s Mainprize Grill, the lounge and restaurant, with a large deck for dining or kicking back after a round of golf. The newly renovated golf club pro shop offers a variety of event packages for corporate golf tournaments or your next family reunion. There are corporate, couples and junior memberships available, or punch cards with weekly events.

Mainprize Lake has been stocked with more than 22 million walleye fish since 1992 and offers excellent launching and filleting facilities. 19 lots are now available for purchase in the newest campground, Campground E. Group camping consists of four sites and a camp kitchen. Over 120 full-season campers at the park make evenings enjoyable, and there are also more than 150 year-round residents (with lots in Harbour View and Island View still available). The four main campgrounds, A, B, C and E, along with overflow camping, provide a playground facility, fire receptacles, tables and clean bathrooms. Campground F will be opening July 2013. Lot services include daily garbage pickup, regular grass mowing and maintenance, a twin-lane RV dumping station with a rinse hose and two fresh water hoses, and a laundromat located at the Bentwood Rental Cabins. For more information on lots, call 306.458.2362.

Call the park entry building at 306.458.2865 for more information about leasing. If camping is not your style, relax in one of the eight beautiful Bentwood Cabins above the harbour only a short distance from the clubhouse. Overnighters or kitchen units are available, and each cabin contains a bathroom and shower, a covered deck, air conditioning, satellite TV, bedding, and access to the laundromat. Ice and soft drinks are available and fire pits are located behind the cabins.

Year-round accommodations The Harbour View Bed and Breakfast offers year-round accommodations. Harbour View, a 1,750-square-foot log home, offers five theme rooms, two luxurious three-piece bathrooms, a

game room, an eight-person outdoor hot tub on the outdoor patio, a guest barbecue and fire pit, and a meeting room. The site is wheelchair-accessible and close to both the clubhouse and boat launch. Available dining is perfect for Christmas parties, anniversaries and all special occasions. Advanced bookings are necessary. Call 306.458.2504 to make your reservation. Pederson Place is adjacent to the clubhouse and accommodates larger golf tournaments, family reunions and weddings. Named to honour the Pederson family, which volunteered countless hours towards operating the old Dr. Mainprize Park and constructing the new Mainprize Park, the facility offers a 5,000-square-foot space with seating for up to 150 people. Equipped with bathrooms, refreshment counter, pop machine, running water, kitchen sink,

coffee machine, wheelchair accessibility, and a large 3,000-square-foot deck and barbecue area, Pederson Place makes a great facility for any event. Extra features include a spacious gravel parking lot, exterior lighting, close proximity to the golf course, rental cabins and campground. of knowledge in the glass industry, from flat glass, mirrors and heavy glass enclosures, to auto glass and anything and everything else clients may need. Vice president and general manager Jamie Halbgewachs, son of the original owners Peter and Linda now retired, joined the company in 1990 and continues towards growing and expanding the company. Increasingly, he says the company is taking its expertise to the business and industrial community, offering installation and repair of storefronts, automatic doors and all kinds of glass for schools, hospitals and businesses, both inside and out. “It’s an important part of our business,” Halbgewachs says of the commercial side, which also offers 24/7 emergency

service. That side of the business continues to grow and expand. “Glass has become more and more popular in office construction, both for the exterior and interior,” he says. The company is well-known for carrying Energy Star rated PVC residential windows and doors. Their selection is second-to-none. Glacier Glass services, repairs and replaces all brands of commercial aluminum and all-glass doors, framing, and sealed units provided by its 24/7 service department. “As a distributor and installer of Kawneer products, we provide a wide range of commercial aluminum products from curtain wall systems, Trifab framing, window systems, storefronts, entrances, hardware and much more,” he says.

A TAle of A True Audiophile “We are far too easily pleased.” —C.S. Lewis By Nykea Marie Behiel phoTos lisa laNdrie

“C

omposers write music passionately, to engage people. Musicians want to convey their passion, but some sound systems are so poor, they just can’t translate that,” says David Puls, owner of Pulsworks Audio Arts. Many of us have come to expect the quality of music we hear on headphones from MP3 files, but David is exuberant about enhancing your sound experience.

Bryston

“I open up a whole new dimension in sound with more articulation, more nuance.” Sitting in his audio or visual theatre for only a few moments, you will experience the difference.

“Bryston is an incredible company that stands behind their product. The sound they produce is stunning, remarkable,” says David. The company is committed to creating an audibly accurate and reliable

“I started recording over 30 years ago as an engineer. I always wanted to capture the artistry of the industry, but also the power of the instrument. I capture that sound, and I expect my sound system to be able to play it back.” The subtleties and layers in the music will satisfy your ears as you listen. With sound so big it fills the entire room, you’ll be amazed by the full-bodied clarity. “I’m not about pushing boxes out the door—I work with people so they can truly experience music. I put things together that work together.” The synergy is remarkable and unparalleled by other systems. David can offer an amazing sound experience regardless of budget and lifestyle.

Through extensive research and commitment to the industry, Bryston is able to offer a high calibre product that consistently performs well. “The DAC and digital player are absolutely fantastic.” Bryston’s state-ofthe-art external Stereo DAC (digital to analog converter), delivers magnificent sonic performance. The Bryston Model T Signature Loudspeaker was created with the intention of transporting the listener from their home to a live venue, and it does just that. “The Model T and Mini T are fabulous speakers,” assures David.

eanne Fisher and Sharon Dean of Regina’s Budget Blinds are back from the Budget Blinds national convention in Las Vegas, and they are buzzing with excitement. The annual convention featured the five founders of the company, the corporate team, a plethora of vendors and the company’s 850 franchisees. “The convention is where we learn about what is up and coming in window fashions from all our vendors,” says Budget Blinds manager, Sharon Dean. “This year’s convention had HGTV’s Property Brothers as the keynote speakers.”

“2013 is shaping up to be the year of drapery,” says Sharon. Trends featured at the convention included blinds completed with soft treatments such as drapery panels and top treatments like valances and cornices. A new drapery line, called Inspired Drapes, officially launches in April. This stylish line will include many beautiful geometric, floral and checkered patterns, and outdoor fabrics will also be introduced. Fabric shades are also new for 2013. pillows. The convention showcased plenty of new roll shade fabrics including blackout shades in polished silks, burnout fabrics and an entire line of fully customizable roll shades. Customizable features can include adding buttons, stamps and many different stitching options. Finally, Leanne and Sharon got a sneak peek at a brand new product exclusive to Budget Blinds. Called the Butterfly Blind and made by Bece, this unique new blind is a sheer roll shade mixed with the light and privacy control of a fabric horizontal shade. The Butterfly Blind has many great fabric and colour options, including neutral browns and greys with faux finishes and textures. The convention was also a time to celebrate for Regina’s Budget Blinds. For the fourth year in a row, Leanne, Sharon and their team were honoured as one of the top 20 franchises in North America among a group of 850 franchises. “It was a great convention to attend,” says

Budget Blinds owner, Leanne. “We got to see what’s new for 2013 so we can bring the latest trends right to our customers, and we received recognition for the hard work we do every day.” At the end of February, Budget Blinds will move into its brand-new home in Regina’s Warehouse District. “We can’t wait to get into our new space. It will be something special for our customers to experience,” says Leanne. Their new location at 8th Avenue and Hamilton Street will feature a one-of-a-kind showroom where you’ll be able to get up close and personal with their many draperies, blinds and window coverings. While Budget Blinds might be getting bigger, their customer service remains the same. ummer is upon us, and with that comes new homes and buildings being constructed. During the warmer time of the year, it’s easy to forget about the winter cold that’s coming. That’s why you need to put some thought right now into the most important part of your home: the insulation. When you do, you should consider these seven essential criteria:

2 Monolithic Air-Tight Barrier

5 Environmental Friendliness

Since foam is sprayed on as a liquid and then expands 20 to 30 per cent, it fills every single nook, cranny, crevice, hole, crack and gap. The result is a continuous, air-tight seal which is extremely important, since 60 per cent of a buildings heat loss is through convection, or air-infiltration. Just a quarter inch of Enviro Foam eliminates nearly 100 per cent of heat loss through convection.

Our product is made from annually renewable soybean oil and recycled plastic bottles. It utilizes a “zero ozone depletion substance” (Zero ODS) blowing agent. A building that is insulated and sealed with Enviro Foam will also use 40 per cent to 60 per cent less energy, reducing fossil fuel usage and decreasing GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions.

3 Monolithic MoistureProof Vapour Barrier Our product meets all requirements as a vapour barrier, and it accomplishes this low permeability due to its “closed cell” structure. The slightest tear in your poly vapor barrier will result in moisture penetration and degradation of typical forms of insulation. You can be assured with spray foam that there is no moisture penetration.

1 Constant, High R-Value R-Value is a measurement of thermal resistance. Unlike fiber insulations such as fiberglass, cellulose and Rockwool, spray foam has a “real world” R-Value which is not affected by external forces. Studies by the US Department of Energy found that fiber insulations lose half of their R-value when outside temperatures reach -28° C. Similar tests found the same effect from wind, with fiber insulations losing half of their R-value when exposed to a 15 km/h wind.

64

FineLifestyles

Estevan/Weyburn

4 Increased Structural Performance Our product has a density of 2 lb/cu ft and a closed cell structure, which increases shear and racking strength by 300 per cent. A building sprayed with our foam decreases the noise from the exterior environment as well. Another major benefit of Enviro Foam is improved indoor air quality. Since it creates an airtight structure, dust and other exterior pollutants cannot enter the building through the walls.

6 Standard Construction Methods Apply Since Enviro Foam is applied at the same time in the construction process as “conventional insulation,” there is no interruption or alteration to the construction schedule. Everything from framing, plumbing and electrical to the interior and exterior finishing stays exactly the same.

7 Cost Efficient While the upfront cost of spray foam is higher, that cost difference can be worked into your mortgage, only slightly affecting your monthly payments. That monthly increase in your payments will be offset by the energy savings spray foam is providing and will actually make you money every month. With rising energy costs this adds tremendous value to your home. At Enviro Foam, we provide a high quality, long-term solution for all seven of these areas. FLEW

s summer approaches, Garett Adam, owner of JAGG Curb Appeal, knows that making your outdoor space as comfortable as your indoor space makes the warm season that much more enjoyable. “In addition to our sunrooms, we’re offering a couple of new products this year,” says Garett. “We’ve got a great selection of retractable screen rooms and doors that can make your patio, deck or garage even better for enjoying the outdoors.”

JAGG is now offering screen rooms and sunrooms made by AAA Aluminum Products. These unique rooms can create an inviting outdoor space all year round. A screen-enclosed balcony or deck can be a great place for relaxing or entertaining, without some of the annoyances of the outdoors. You can sit outside and enjoy the fresh summer air, protected from the elements and not bothered by mosquitoes, wasps or other pests. Screen rooms provide more shelter

than an awning and are less enclosed than a sunroom, adding additional living space to your home. JAGG can create a screen room specific to your needs; every room is designed, engineered and manufactured to withstand a tough Canadian winter. For those looking for something a little simpler, JAGG also offers retractable screens doors. An exterior screen can turn your garage or covered deck into

a comfortable space to savour summer. These custom-made retractable shading systems can provide shade, energy savings, ventilation and protection from insects—all at the touch of a button. JAGG’s screen systems are designed to filter out the sun’s harmful effects while preserving your view and letting you control your indoor lighting. In addition to keeping bugs outside, JAGG’s screens also feature a Screen Clean system that brushes bugs and debris off the screen, making sure they don’t get inside your home or nest in the screen. JAGG Screen Systems are available in many fabrics, styles and colours to match any home. They can block the sun while keeping your view, or provide complete blackout. And, like screen room systems, they are designed to handle all kinds of weather, even prairie wind.

couldn’t be more pleased with the result. “The JAGG team was wonderful to work with. When we had questions they were happy to answer them right away, and everything ran smoothly,” says Colynda. “We recommend JAGG to anyone considering a similar renovation.” “No matter what you’re looking for—retractable screen, screen room or sunroom—we can provide you with a great new space for your home,”

says Garett. With spring fast approaching, now is the time to consider your outdoor space and how you can maximize your enjoyment of the outdoors this summer. FLEW JAGG Curb Appeal Lumsden 306.536.5682 jagg@sasktel.net www.jagg.ca ABOVE Garett Adam, owner

acuum trucks are an important part of drilling oil and natural gas wells. They are used to remove drilling mud, drilling cuttings, cement, spills and sand from storage tanks and fracking sites. These materials are then transported to a disposal plant. If they are not properly disposed, these wastes are hazardous to the environment. When Rob Peloquin saw there was a shortage of VacTrucks while working in the oilfield outside of Estevan, he decided to start his own VacTruck business, RPM Oilfield Services Ltd. “I’ve always enjoyed working with the big trucks,” says Rob. “I came to the conclusion that this may be something

that I’d get myself into.” With the help of his wife, Margot, and nephew, Shawn Wallace, who also works on the oil patch, Rob’s vision was realized in May, 2011.

residues from oil wells. Having the right equipment is critical for completing job processes, but also for the protection of workers.

RPM Oilfield Services Ltd. is Rob’s first business venture. Starting with just one truck in 2011, Rob expanded in 2012 by adding a straight vac unit to his fleet.

Employees at RPM are required to have personal protective equipment, or PPE. The standard PPE includes steel-toed boots, coveralls, hard hats, safety glasses and rubber gloves. They are also given H2S monitors. Before entering a tank, the monitors are used to measure the level of the toxic gas. The workers are only allowed to enter the tanks if the gas levels are safe.

Rob’s employees are the most important part of RPM Oilfield Services Ltd. He describes them as focused and efficient. “Having the proper staff is always important. We’re always looking for guys that are eager to work, learn and be safe.” Safety is essential when working in the oil field, especially when you are about to step into a tank to clean out

In addition to the equipment, Rob says he implements the “buddy system” whenever possible. “It’s to make sure that there’s someone overlooking what

you do so that you’re not all alone in the tank,” says Rob. “If something does happen, you always have someone there to help.” Rob and his staff are always ready to help their customers too. With over 15 years of work experience in the oil and gas industry, Rob understands his clients’ needs. Rob says a lot of his business has been driven by his reputation and word of mouth. “Being in Estevan and working in the industry has allowed me to build a rapport with past clients and friends,” he explains. Although word-of-mouth advertising has provided more work opportunities, the employees’ work ethic has secured their customers. Time and time again, RPM Oilfield Services has been praised for their willingness to help other companies in the field. “It’s very important to me that we don’t sit back and wait for our jobs,” says Rob. “We’re always willing to help out another company that’s out there at the same time we are.” Employees at RPM Oilfield Services Ltd. not only clean the tanks, but they often follow fracking crews, who pump sand into rock formations to extract oil from

the ground. RPM’s vac trucks are often on location in case of spills. Clients often credit them for their prompt arrivals, efficient performance, service and manpower. In 2013, there are some new additions to RPM Oilfield Services Ltd. They have added three new straight-back vac trucks and a hydrovac unit to their fleet. Unlike other vacuum trucks, the hydrovac is able to do a lot more than just cleaning fluids. It can do anything from suck up dirt to digging holes. “It’s a ‘super vac’ and has more power than the other trucks,” says Rob. With this new truck, RPM Oilfield Services Ltd. will be able to locate and clean pipelines as well. No matter how they expand in the future, the quality of their services will always be on Rob Peloquin’s mind. “We are striving to provide the best service possible to our clients,” he says. “As we expand, we hope to provide better services.” FLEW

Global EnGinEErinG Firm Puts Down Local Roots FineLifestyles

here would a global engineering firm known for managing delivery of the 2012 London Olympics venues and the reconstruction of the Panama Canal look to open one of its newest offices? Weyburn, Saskatchewan, of course. For Lloyd Saul, manager of the new CH2M HILL office, it makes perfect sense. Around the world and close to home, CH2M HILL employees like him provide the full spectrum of consulting, program management, design, construction, and operations solutions that support project and client goals and improve quality of life. “We are an engineering and environmental services firm that has worked around the world, and we’ve worked on numerous projects big and small,” says Saul. “But we’re also local people who value the communities where we live.”

74

While CH2M HILL has been working closely with the oil and gas industry through its Calgary office since 1978, the new office in Weyburn reflects the rapidly growing environmental and infrastructure needs of communities in southeast Saskatchewan. “We’re experiencing the positive impact from development and growth related to booming oil, gas, and mining here,” Saul notes, “but because of the speed of that growth, communities and companies are also challenged to keep pace with it.” The local community and businesses find it helpful to have a local presence to serve new developments and infrastructure needs. And having the office in Weyburn makes it even easier for CH2M HILL to be plugged into what’s happening locally.

CH2M HILL’s clients range from small family businesses to large oil companies drilling in the Bakken formation, as well as municipal clients in the southeast Saskatchewan area. The firm is committed to being these clients’ single source for project solutions. On large programs or small projects, they work with clients through the complete lifecycle or on a single phase, safely and cost-effectively. In southeast Saskatchewan, CH2M HILL provides consulting services in the areas of environment and engineering. The firm offers a “cradle to grave” range of services, providing innovative solutions to many ongoing problems. And with a goal of zero incidents as part of its “Target Zero” initiative, CH2M HILL is committed to providing exemplary health, safety, security and environmental performance.

While CH2M HILL may be new to Saskatchewan, the story of CH2M HILL in Canada began in 1919 as Gore & Storrie Limited, a firm that combined engineering and science. This was an unusual combination in those days, but today it’s recognized as the combination of expertise required to deal with complex environmental needs. Gore & Storrie Limited enjoyed great success throughout central Canada, and in 1995 it was acquired by U.S.-based CH2M HILL. Started by four engineers in the small farming and college town of Corvallis, Oregon, in 1946, CH2M HILL now has 30,000 employees in 120 offices around the globe. An industry leader in sustainability and the environment, CH2M HILL is one of Engineering News-Record’s top-ranked firms in environmental, “green,” and program management

Above all, CH2M HILL employees are personally invested and engaged in the communities in which they live and work. Calgary office staff volunteer at a shelter for homeless families across the street from the office, distributing fresh produce and other groceries to help families in need.

CH2M HILL Manager Lloyd Saul shares this spirit of giving. “I was born and raised in Saskatchewan in a small farming community. I used to play ball against Weyburn in my youth,” he says with a smile. “It feels good to be here, working with a company that is committed to making a difference for the community.” FLEW

or nearly five years, Mission Hot Shot Services Inc. has been providing the oil industry in Estevan with high quality and expedient service. Clinton and Nicole Gibbons established the company in 2008 when they saw a shortage of companies providing hauling and transport services to oil rigs. Mission Hot Shot specializes in light oilfield trucking—mostly in transporting tools and equipment from shops to drilling and service rigs.

76

FineLifestyles

“Our job is fairly important. If certain pieces or equipment are missing, it can sometimes hold up projects that are worth hundreds of thousands of dollars,” says Clinton. “We are committed to deliver the equipment to the oilfield in a fast and safe manner.” Having worked in the oilfield since he graduated from high school, Clinton has acquired the skills required for his business. While working for a chemical company, Clinton drove around Saskatchewan most of the time and claims to know all the

shortcuts in the oilfields. He passes this knowledge onto his employees. His employees are trained in land location and are given a GPS to guide them. In addition to knowing the short cuts, they also have special licenses for operating all heavy trailers and certifications that are required for working in the oilfield. Mission Hot Shot has seven full-time employees and four part-time staff members. The company has six pintle hitch trailers, five gooseneck trailers, five one-ton

trucks and one 1 1⁄2 flat deck truck. Clinton is looking to add another truck in the near future. The vehicles can carry anything from the size of a toaster to a sea can, which is almost 30 feet long. Mission Hot Shot’s employees are willing to transport anything and everything required by their customers in the oilfield – from tools that fix the oil rigs to sucker rods and tubing. The company moved to their current location in August, 2012 to provide a better environment for the staff and more efficient services for their customers. According to Clinton, perseverance, commitment and dedication to customer satisfaction are very important to Mission Hot Shot Services. On busy days, he can receive up to 15 calls from customers, while on slow days or -45C winter days, the number of calls could be reduced to one or two per day. The company has a great track record for making deliveries anywhere across the prairies, one of the furthest places being Slave Lake. “We a have sufficient number of trucks and trailers to to service our customers and other operations. This makes us more accessible and ready when the calls come in,” says Clinton. “We’ve got people coming and going all the time. We’re big enough to deliver

excellent services but small enough to be accountable to the customer.” Clinton credits his staff’s dedication to their work as a key part of the company’s success. “They’re all hard working people and have positive attitudes,” he says. “Some of them definitely take the best interest of the company to heart and work hard to make the customers happy.” The importance of customer service is a valuable lesson that Clinton has learned from his previous work experience. “They are the reason we are operating,” he says. “You have to be honest with them and be knowledgeable in your area of expertise.” Not only is customer service important to Mission Hot Shot, they are also committed to giving to mission projects and other charities to help those who are less fortunate, whether it’s locally-based or worldwide. The Gibbons have each been on a mission trip to a developing country through their church, they say it has given them a new outlook on life and a new appreciation for their lifestyle in Canada. In fact, their desire for mission work inspired the name for their company. Clinton and Nicole have been and intend to continue to use a portion of the profit

from the business to support many different organizations and ministries. “We are blessed to have the luxury to help those who are less fortunate,” says Nicole. “We would like to take our blessings and pass them onto others.” Nicole and her husband also often donate to local sports teams and youth groups. For Clinton, it’s all about providing the kids an equal chance to learn and play so they can have the same opportunities as their peers. “When you’re a kid, you get singled out when you don’t have something,” he says. “As an adult, I can help that kid and make his or her life better. It will make them feel loved and open a lot more doors for them in the future.” Clinton and Nicole look forward to continue providing high quality services for their customers in 2013 and are excited for new opportunities to continue helping others. helley Schroeder fell into her career in oilfield contracting services 25 years ago, and she hasn’t looked back since. “My husband Andy was in the oilfield business first, and I worked in land administration,” says Shelley. “We started A&S Oilfield Operating Ltd., and the rest is history.” They began working in battery operation services, and over the years, the business has grown and diversified. During that time, Shelley has found her niche in safety.

“While Andy took care of his side of the business, I built my career in safety,”

says Shelley. “Over the years I have taken many courses and earned my certification from the Saskatchewan Construction Safety Association.” Now, Shelley builds safety programs from the ground up for many local firms, and she “lives” safety at work and at home. “Our friends and family often tell me to park the safety watch, but it’s become our way of life,” adds Shelley. When Shelley’s not busy with work or meetings, you can find her with her family watching sports—football and hockey are favourites—or at home cooking and baking with her daughter, Emily and enjoying her Yorkshire Terriers.

A&S Oilfield Operating Ltd. provides services to Southeast Saskatchewan’s oil patch, and co-owner Shelley Schroeder leads the company’s safety division. “I am a certified Safety Officer, External/Internal Auditor and an Occupational Health and Safety Practitioner,” says Shelley. “I build and maintain safety programs and provide any number of safetyrelated services, including conducting staff safety meetings, assessing safety programs, and developing and producing safety manuals.” Shelley also sets up and maintains ISN, Comply Works and PICS safety registries, and anything else that might arise in the course of her client’s company-specific job scope. “I’ve been very fortunate to work with the companies I work with in that they consider their safety program to be an integral part of their day-to-day operations, and it’s not just something to have in place in order to get work,” adds Shelley. A&S Oilfield Operating Ltd. is a familyowned business headed by Andy and Shelley, and now includes their daughter and son-in-law, Denille and Riley Shaver. Daughters, Terilyn and Emily, are not full-time employees in the company, but they help out in the office or field when they’re needed. eyburn’s Jeff Chessall joined the family business, New Age Home Furnishings & Electronics, right out of high school, and he hasn’t looked back since. “I graduated in 1999, and went straight into working for my dad’s company,” says Jeff. “I just knew that’s where I wanted to be.” In 2005, Jeff bought into the company and he and his dad, Wes, became father-and-son business partners. Two years later, Jeff got inspired and saw opportunity in a hobby he had.

“I enjoy snowmobiling in the winter and boating in the summer,” says Jeff. “My hobby led me to thinking that there was an opportunity in selling and servicing motorsport equipment in the southeast.” In 2007, a lot behind the existing New Age store became available. Jeff sold his dad on the idea, and together they purchased the land and started work. In October 2008, New Age Motorsports opened its doors. Today, the company sells and services all kinds of motorsport equipment including snowmobiles, ATVs and boats. “It’s been a great five years, but it’s really cut into my time to get outside,” laughs Jeff.

Jeff is also president of the Weyburn & District Chamber of Commerce, and a member of the Weyburn Young Fellows. When he’s not at work or at Chamber meetings, he’s a husband to wife Shauna and busy dad to his two children ages five and 12. “These days, we’re ferrying kids from one activity to another,” says Jeff. “But that’s just being a dad.”

If landscaping is what you want, New Age also carries Husqvarna Lawnmowers, Chainsaws, weedwhips and of course Snowblower’s for the winter. New Age Motorsports also offers parts and service for all types of marine and outdoor sport vehicles. “We have two fully-qualified mechanics on our staff, ready to get your boat or ATV ready for the spring,” says co-owner Jeff Chessall. “Not only do we work on Polaris, we can work on Mercury Marine or Volvo Penta motors, and all other makes and models of ATVs and snowmobiles.” The entire New Age team, is committed to providing you with personalized, attentive service, whether in furnishings, electronics or motorsports. “I prefer to be out on the jobsite with the guys than in the office doing paperwork. I like the physical aspect of the work that we do, and it’s very satisfying to watch a job come together.” Fortunately for John, his partner in the business takes care of the majority of the paperwork in the office, which allows John to spend more time on his projects. “I like to be available to my clients for any questions, and be able to monitor the quality of the work that is done. At the end of the day, it’s my name on the

finished project, and I like to make sure it represents the quality workmanship that we have become known for.” Customer service is a top priority for John, and one thing you can count on is that he will be around long after a project is complete.

Investing in the Community John is currently working on a commercial development for a two- to three-storey building for downtown Weyburn that will have office and retail space available for rent.

“We are in the designing stage of the project and are looking to incorporate various sizes of commercial office space and retail on the main floor, along with parking,” says John. Investing in the community that they live in is another important part of what John does. “We have built a couple of commercial buildings in Weyburn that has allowed us to develop relationships with other businesses in town such as Olympia Fitness, Weyburn Eye Care and Summit Liability, to name a few.” John is also active in the community, as a board member with the South East Regional Economic Development Authority (SEREDA) and the Weyburn Housing Advisory Board. “I feel very fortunate to be a part of these organizations and see it as a way that I can give back to the community that I am a part of.”

ustin McFadden, co-owner of Weyburn’s King George Hotel Fitzgerald’s Pub & Grill, found his way home to Weyburn after a few years in Alberta’s oil patch. “I left Weyburn in 1997 and headed out west,” says Dustin. “After five years, I got tired of the constant travel and decided it was time to head home.” In 2002, Dustin made his way back to his hometown and started work in the southeast Saskatchewan oil industry,

86

and in 2007 struck out on his own as a drilling consultant. On the side, Dustin also started working in event promotions, bringing concerts and other events to the southeast. This business, and his fiancée Codie Longley, led Dustin to buying the King George Hotel in 2010. “My fiancée, Codie, had been managing another hotel in Weyburn, and then

she moved over to the King George,” says Dustin. “The owner wanted to sell, and asked if we were interested. I have always wanted to own a bar, and Codie had the experience to run it.” Dustin and Codie took the plunge, and on October 18, 2010 they became the owners of the historic 100-year-old hotel. “Codie handles the day-to-day management of the bar, and I guess I am the bankroll and talent booker,” laughs Dustin.

When Dustin and Codie aren’t working, they are parenting their three young children: sons Tucker and Bentley and daughter Brooklyn. As busy as he is, Dustin still manages to squeeze in time working on his 1942 Chevy Rat Rod and indulging his passion as a selfdescribed “gearhead.”

Come for the Entertainment, Stay for the Food Weyburn’s King George Hotel, with the Fitzgerald’s Pub & Grill, has been a destination for food, drinks and fun for decades. “The building is 100 years old, and a bit of an institution in Weyburn,” says Dustin. Today, the KG is the first bar open and the last to close in Weyburn with plenty of entertainment to be had. There’s something going on every night of the week. “We’ve got Open Mic night on Wednesdays and Karaoke on Thursdays,” says Codie. “Fridays and Saturdays, there’s always an act—band, comedian or hypnotist—and Sunday is just for Weyburn’s bar industry. Mondays and Tuesdays are always reserved for charitable fundraisers.” Not only is the pub known for its entertainment, it’s also well-known for its extensive and delicious menu. “We offer traditional pub grub, plus steaks and seafood,” says Codie. “We’re really proud of our menu, and we try to source as much food locally as we can.” The KG is proud to be involved in the community. In addition to offering the hotel as a place for charitable fundraisers, Dustin and Codie support the local Humane Society and sponsor many local events. “We work hard to make not only the hotel, but the city, a fun place to be with lots to see and do,” says Dustin. “This is a great place to be from, and we like to help keep it that way.” FLEW King George Hotel Fitzgerald’s Pub and Grill 2–3rd Street Weyburn

orn and raised on a farm in the Weyburn area, Mike Dorsch learned all about working outdoors from a young age. “Growing up on a grain farm with livestock, very seldom was there a day with nothing to do,” says Mike. The skills he learned helped his future career in the oil industry. Like the farm, the oilfield does not shut down for the weekends or after 5 p.m., so Mike was accustomed to the oncall lifestyle. From early on, he was intrigued by the oil patch. With ready access to farm equipment for mowing and snow removal, Mike and his dad started doing lease maintenance in their spare time. After high school graduation, Mike wanted to get more involved in the oil industry and picked

up a part-time job as a production operator. When that operator moved on, Mike took over his work. As Mike grew into his role as an oilfield operator, the oil patch in southeast Saskatchewan began to take off. Mike and his future business partner, Scott Kallis, saw an opportunity in the booming oil industry, and in May 2008 they launched Malibu Construction. Based in Estevan, Malibu Construction is an oilfield construction and maintenance company. The partners started out with one truck in 2008, and now they have a fleet of five trucks and nine staff members. “We’ve been busy since the beginning,” says Mike. “We do it all, from quality construction, mechanical setup and installation, decommissioning,

facility maintenance and turnarounds, environmental cleanup and reclamation, to well optimization, sheave and belt changes, low speed motor changeovers, and pumpjack balancing.” When Mike isn’t busy running Malibu Construction and working in the field, he enjoys time with his family. “Family is important to us at Malibu. We know it’s tough to be a part of a company that is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, every day of the year,” says Mike. Mike married his wife Nikole in 2010, and they welcomed son Austin into the world in May 2012. “Austin keeps us busy,” says Mike. “He started sleeping through the night in December, and that’s been great. It’s funny how a good night’s sleep can change everything.”

Malibu Construction Started in May 2008, Malibu Construction is an Estevan-based oilfield construction and maintenance company, serving the southeast Saskatchewan oil patch. Co-owners Mike Dorsch and Scott Kallis saw the oil boom in the province as an opportunity, and put their expertise to work nearly five years ago. Combined, Mike and Scott have more than 30 years of experience between them. “We wanted to create a company with top-notch people and first-class equipment,” says Mike. Fast forward almost five years, and Malibu’s five trucks and nine staff members are working in the Estevan area. The company is committed to do whatever is needed of them. “We take

pride in what we do for our customers, and because of that we stay busy,” says Mike. “We do our best work for our customers and in turn, they can keep doing what they do best.” To learn more about what Malibu Construction can do for your company, call Mike and Scott at 306.861.9509 or 306.421.3969. pportunity brought Aaron Grohn back to his hometown, Weyburn, after several years in Alberta. After completing his studies as an Avionics Engineering Technologist at SAIT in Calgary, Aaron began his career in Alberta. It was at his job that Aaron met his future business partner, Kevin Allen. “Kevin and I met working at the same shop,” says Aaron. “That meeting would eventually lead me right back to where I started here in Weyburn.” After meeting and becoming friends, Kevin eventually left

90

the shop where they worked and started working for a new company. “I stayed on after Kevin left, and began to realize there was an opportunity out there in automation,” says Aaron. “The company I was working for wasn’t interested in pursuing that, and I started looking around and thinking about my future.” Aaron was thinking about starting his own business, and he met Kevin for a drink to discuss his plans. When they got together, Kevin introduced Aaron to his boss and the three men started talking. Kevin’s boss told Aaron that he

was right–there was a lot of opportunity out there. He encouraged Aaron to look outside Stettler where they all were working, so that they could leverage each other’s respective skills and businesses. Aaron asked where he should think about setting up his company. Kevin’s boss suggested Weyburn. “It was just too funny,” says Aaron. “I told him Weyburn was my hometown, and he told me that he had lots of contacts in Weyburn that he could introduce me too. One of them turned out to be my dad.”

As he remembers it, Aaron packed up and left Stettler the following Sunday and hasn’t looked back since. Aaron established Comtech in Weyburn, and eventually brought Kevin into this business as it expanded into Alberta, and then across the country and south into the U.S. Today, Aaron runs Comtech, but also the family business he inherited from his father–Industrial Electric & Instrumentation Ltd., as well as a local gym, Olympia Fitness Ltd. When Aaron’s not running his businesses, he’s enjoying time with his family and his hobby building custom motorcycles. Aaron’s wife Angela is also an entrepreneur as a partner in a local hair salon, MissFitz Hair Studio. Together, they are busy with their children. “When we’re not at work, it’s all about following the kids around and getting to their activities and commitments,” says Aaron. “I coach hockey, and as a family we enjoy boating, skiing and all kinds of sports and activities together. I use the time that’s left, outside of quality time with my family, to build custom motorcycles. It’s good constructive release and I enjoy the finished results.

Founded in 1975 by Terry Grohn, Industrial Electric & Instrumentation Ltd (IEI) has more than 50 electricians, instrument technologists and mechanics working with customers in southeast Saskatchewan and southwest Manitoba. Aaron Grohn, Terry’s son, began taking on a larger role with the company in 2005 and inherited the firm in 2007.

The corporation has found success in the strength of its diversity and experience. With many loyal, experienced staff, IEI has been able to enjoy success in both the electrical vertical as well as the instrumentation vertical, breaking the common issue of E&I shops that only provide experience in one or the other. This true turn-key service is a part of the exceptional customer experience that IEI has to offer and is a crucial differentiator for the company in the marketplace today. IEI provides electrical and instrumentation maintenance and installations, and previous projects have included CO2 injection facilities, water injection facilities, oil and gas production facilities, site production primary and secondary start-up, production single well batteries, complete turn-key production site and production facility automation solutions, commercial SCADA and automation solutions and systems, city and municipality water and waste management, large grain terminals, and wire and cable plants. IEI’s team of electricians and instrument mechanics are ready for any job. They offer services as a general and electrical contractor for major oil and gas companies, as well as communication and wireless point-to-point services. IEI’s experience ranges from major turnkey plant construction, expansions and upgrades to heavy and light commercial and residential construction. The company’s project teams ensure a quality product on time, and manage expectations from construction through to the final commissioning. From general electrical work to more complex projects, including automation and motor control, IEI is committed to quality work and exceptional service. FLEW

Cathedral InsuranCe Brokers: One-Stop Vehicle Licensing and Insurance By Julie Mushynsky Photos Doug sully

G

eorge Sereggela and Doug Trapp have been operating Estevan’s Cathedral Insurance Brokers since 2008. In 2007, Doug, a former Sun Life Financial employee and pro-hockey player, suggested that he and George enter the insurance business together. George, a former Estevan lawyer who had moved to

94

FineLifestyles

Estevan/Weyburn

Calgary, was looking for a business opportunity. Today, Cathedral is a full-service operation and employs ten full-time and four part-time staff. George and Doug bring many years of business experience and familiarity with the community and have consequently established great trust among Estevan residents.

For those unfamiliar with Cathedral and insurance, the brokerage has two primary functions: they are SGI motor license issuers and “property and casualty” insurance brokers. The SGI motor license issuing services offered at Cathedral include: renewing your driver’s license, obtaining or

renewing your vehicle registration (also known as getting or renewing “your plates”), setting up road tests, and obtaining photo identification and vehicle permits. When you purchase your Saskatchewan registration or “plates” remember that you automatically receive the following basic automobile insurance: • coverage for damage to your own vehicle subject to a deductible of $700 (the deductible is the portion of any insurance claim you must pay before your insurance covers the remaining costs); • coverage for personal injury as a result of a vehicle crash with personal auto injury insurance; and • liability insurance of $200,000 for damage your vehicle may cause to the vehicle or property of others or injuries it may cause to other people.* If you decide the insurance offered by “your plates” is not enough you can purchase auto extension insurance or “a package policy.” Under a package policy you can choose one or more of

the following: to lower your deductible; glass coverage which pays to fix damage to your windshield; loss-ofuse coverage to pay for the cost of a rental if your vehicle is damaged in an accident; replacement cost coverage to replace your vehicle if it is a total loss; and increased liability insurance up to $5 million in case you are at fault in an accident and/or sued. Aside from auto insurance, Cathedral offers a range of business insurance (retail to professional services, manufacturing, oilfield), residential (home, tenant or condo), farm, church, condominium, crop hail, event and travel medical insurance from the following insurance companies: SGI Canada, Aviva, Wawanesa, Intact, Saskatchewan Mutual, Germania Mutual, Red River Mutual, Mennonite Mutual and other specialty providers.

With spring upon us, people are now considering more road travel and leisure pursuits. Before setting out with the family, we need to think about the types of vehicles we will be using and if they are properly registered and insured, like motorcycles, motorhomes, cabin and boat trailers. Call Cathedral or visit their website if you have any questions about licensing and insurance. FLEW *Note that plates from provinces like Alberta and Ontario do not provide any insurance coverage.

Young entrepreneur Providing Quality Drywall Services By doris wang

W

hile many people his age are maybe just starting their first career or deciding what they want to do in life, 24-year-old Dieter Kitzul already owns a successful business in Regina. Since 2008, Kitzul Drywall Inc. has worked on many projects with local homebuilders and contractors. Kitzul’s interest in construction started at a young age. Since he was 13, he spent his summer holidays working for his uncle’s renovation business. He started off by carrying bricks, and he eventually learned all the trades, from flooring to carpentry to siding and framing. “There’s not a lot that I haven’t done,” says Kitzul. Although he is ambitious and businesssavvy, Kitzul is also academically adept.

96

FineLifestyles

Estevan/Weyburn

In high school, he worked hard to be on the honour roll. “That’s part of my upbringing,” he explains. “Although I wasn’t sure I wanted to go to university, I still wanted to get high marks.” Taking advice from a family member, Kitzul declined offers to go to business school after graduation and started his own business. “I can learn the accounting and theoretical aspect of the business from school,” he says, “But I wanted to learn how to do the job and how to communicate with builders and customers.” Though he started in exterior renovation with stucco application, Kitzul eventually decided to focus on drywall. “It was an aspect of construction that I enjoyed

the most,” he says. “You’re engaging the house from the skeleton stage, and you’re giving it a shape and finish.”

Seeing his interest in drywall, his uncle advised him that sticking to one trade would be beneficial to his career. “When you stick to one trade, you begin to get faster and you learn more tricks to it,” says Kitzul. “You eliminate the amount of time, and it’s easier to train people since you’re doing the same thing over and over.” At the age of 19, Kitzul established his own company, Kitzul Drywall Inc. Since then, the company has been applauded for their quality, consistency and pricing. If a customer is unhappy with their work, Kitzul and his employees go back and fix the problem. No matter how small the job, Kitzul Drywall will take the time to get it done. To Kitzul, his customers’ satisfaction is his number one priority. He still talks to customers from four years ago, and almost all his work comes from referrals. Kitzul admits that his business wouldn’t be a success if it weren’t for his hardworking employees. A majority of his employees are immigrants from developing countries, and Kitzul says that they have the best work ethic he has ever seen. “They do some of the best work I’ve seen,” Kitzul notes. Currently, Kitzul Drywall Inc. is working on several condo projects and many commercial and residential jobs. He hopes to expand his business to Weyburn in the future and he aspires to be a member of The Regina Homebuilders Association. FLEW

The FuTure oF 3D PrinTing By Clint Kraushaar

C

urrently in its early days of retail production, 3D printing is the new future trend.

With companies, printers and materials all evolving rapidly, 3D printing is set to become the next standard in hobbying. From arts and crafts to prototype development and creation, to simply printing off pieces for the home or shop, 3D printing will enable new facets of creativity in all of us. With products being constantly designed and provided by individuals

98

and even companies, printing off the replacement knob for your stereo, or a new lamp shade to replace the one the kids broke is becoming a viable option. Designing your own products for a truly custom look is also becoming increasingly popular. While the printing technology is still expensive and finicky for home use, it is getting better quickly. New developments in environmentally friendly plant-based plastics are moving the industry to be very ecologically sound while reducing the complexity of printing.

Tech Solutions is offering 3D printing services as part of their wide range of solutions for everyone’s technology needs. From custom phone cases, logo embossed card holders, to full prototypes, Tech Solutions can design, customize and print your objects for you. Get the Freedom to roam From a Local Dealer You Can Trust By Julie Mushynsky

R

Ving is definitely part of the good life. Imagine being in a different place every day, never having to shovel snow or mow the lawn, all in the company of other like-minded RVers. What is even better is that you do not have to sacrifice comfort. With an RV you have your own bed, your own bathroom and the ability to cook your own food. When things get a bit

boring or the weather gets nasty, no problem, you can pick-up and take-off to a different destination for another new adventure. Chrysler-based dealership Power Dodge is now supplying that RV lifestyle to the people of Estevan thanks to owner, Trevor Knibbs. Trevor has been in the automotive business since he was a

teenager in North Battleford, working his way up from wash bay to salesperson to general sales manager. When the opportunity presented itself to purchase the Power Dodge dealership in 2007, Trevor moved his family to Estevan and became a business owner. An industry veteran, Trevor is no stranger to the laws of supply and demand and recognized the need to branch out into selling RVs

FineLifestyles

Estevan/Weyburn

two years ago. “RVs are becoming more popular and the people of Estevan didn’t have an RV dealership,” says Trevor. Adding RVs to their selection allows Power Dodge to offer more to their customers and put the freedom that comes with the RV lifestyle within reach. Power Dodge RV carries five lines of RVs from Keystone, one of the top manufacturers in North America. The lines include Outback, Sydney, Residence, Springdale and Terrain, and each one has something different to offer. Outback is a “super-lite” travel trailer known for its spacious interiors and sophisticated style of cabinetry. The Outback brand is one of the most

100

FineLifestyles

Estevan/Weyburn

popular on the market. The Sydney line is a fifth wheel-style trailer, built for durability and easy towing. For that home away from home, Power Dodge RV offers the Residence brand destination trailer. These are larger, resident-style RVs for more permanent vacations and great for people with waterfront lots. The newest additions are the Springdale and Terrain brands of travel trailers, which are smaller and offer all the conveniences of a travel trailer. “We started offering a few RV brands last year and are building upon it this year,” explains General Manager Brad Pierson. Power Dodge RV is focused on customer satisfaction and providing the ultimate RV experience. Their RV selection offers something for

everyone and for every budget. There is also the option of special ordering an RV. When shopping at Power Dodge RV, you can be sure you are receiving expert advice from people you can trust. “We are a reputable business and people can feel comfortable shopping here. Maintaining that reputation in the community is important to us,” says Trevor. The dealership achieves that notoriety by employing staff who care about the business and the customer. Several staff members have decades of experience in the industry and in customer service. This includes RV manager, Gerry Kerr. Gerry is a longtime Estevan resident with a background

in designing and fabricating modular and mobile homes. Gerry knows what to look for in an RV and customers can rely on his advice and recommendations. “We are also about giving people a great experience when shopping for an RV,” explains Trevor. Using an RV is enjoyable, exciting and relaxing, so why shouldn’t shopping for one be the same? People in southeastern Saskatchewan can expect that same experience when shopping at Power Dodge RV. From your perfect vehicle to your dream RV, the Power Team will work with you to ensure you get what you want and need. You can feel good about buying from a dealership in your own community. The Power Team understands that occasionally RVs need urgent repairs. Power Dodge RV offers a mobile service to their customers to help ease some of the stress if problems do arise. “Whether the television doesn’t work or the furnace won’t start, we will send people out to remedy the situation in a timely manner,” says Brad. “It gives customers that peace of mind security when out on the road.” Spring is upon us, which means the RV season is too. Come in early or give Power Dodge RV a call to help you envision your mobile paradise. FLEW Power Dodge Ltd. Thinking About Cosmetic Surgery? Here’s What YOU Need to Know!

re befo

Research Your Surgeon

Not all surgeons are are created equal or have the same level of training or experience. Think about the game of golf – a weekend golfer will never make the PGA. Plastic surgeons are the same – the more procedures they have done with excellent results, the better their overall outcomes will be. It is also critical that you know their credentials. Verify that they have the training they are claiming and ensure your plastic surgeon is Board Certified. Seeing a certificate is not enough – always check directly!

See Real Examples of Their Work

If you are thinking about a facelift, ask for pictures of facelifts that your surgeon has actually done. If you are thinking about breast augmentation, ask to see pictures of breast augmentations. Be thorough in your research, after all – this is your body we are talking about!

Talk to Real Patients

It’s one thing to see beautiful before and after photos – but what do the people who have actually been through it have to say about their experience? How was the care? How well did the surgeon explain the procedures, risks and outcomes with them? How did they feel about their follow up care? Would they do it again? Would they recommend their surgeon to their own family?

Be Prepared

Leading up to your procedure, take extra care to eat healthy, fresh, low sugar foods that are high in protein. Make sure to drink lots of water and exercise – the healthier you are, the faster your recovery and the better your results will be. And read everything you can about the procedures you are considering. Knowledge is power!

Carol Caron’s

Story

After Caro l’s Facelift

“Meeting Dr. Rodas in person to discuss my concerns and my hopes helped me relax and completely trust him,” says Carol. “My husband, Lloyd was with me and he was so impressed with everyone and how they all responded immediately to any questions or concerns he had, too. Dr. Rodas included him and asked his thoughts when options were outlined.” Any regrets? Not one! “Lloyd says he can't believe that he is lucky enough to hang out with such a young sexy chick,” laughs Carol. More importantly, she says, “I think I look and feel so much younger - a smaller version of myself at 40.”
