A

s the new editor for Fine Lifestyles Parkland, I am very excited to immerse myself in this advancing community. In this fourth issue, we are happy to show off Parkland’s best in a special holiday edition. While the streets fill with snow and lights illuminate our homes, the anticipation of the festive season is palpable. Fine Lifestyles is always bringing you great stories about the people and businesses in your area. This issue, we get behind the scenes with Saskatchewan born Amy Matysio, a rising star in the film and television industry. Canora’s Kraynick family also graciously took the time to share a heart-touching story about their son, Chase Kraynick, and how his memory will live on forever through the good deeds of others. We learn about the exciting new Horizon Credit Union Centre from Mayor Streelasky, and how Dragon’s Den member Bruce Croxon gave practical advice on work and life at the Yorkton Chamber of Commerce Dinner. We’ve also included a few fun holiday drink recipes to keep you warm while you curl up to read this issue. Enjoy your holidays, all the best for 2013, and thanks for welcoming me into your homes.

These online communities and networks have a huge influence on trends and style, but you have to keep up. Things cycle through in the blink of an eye, so finding something that will be long-lasting can be tricky if you are devoted to these sites. I’m amazed at how quickly I tire of something because it’s been blogged to death. In our office, we routinely roll our eyes and call something “bloggy”, which isn’t a good thing. However, it wouldn’t be a trends article if I didn’t at least give you a few actual design trends for 2013, would it? Monaco Blue is the pantone colour of the year for 2013. here are two occasions in every woman’s life where she is allowed to feel like a princess—high school graduation and her wedding. At Memories to Last a Lifetime in Yorkton, they have the gowns to make sure every bride and grad has the experience of a lifetime. “We want them to have a great time, and we’ll do everything it takes to make sure they find what they’re looking for,” says Kristin Weber Karcha, owner of Memories. “Every girl is different, each bride or grad wants something different, and we have the selection to make sure they get that unique dress.”

What started as a one-stop shop for your entire wedding planning needs, Memories expanded to carry bridal wear last year. With the success of the new department, this year Kristin decided to add graduation gowns to the mix. The new gowns have already started arriving for the class of 2013, and the store plans to bring in over 120 gowns to choose from. “I graduated ten years ago, and things have really changed. Prom is glamorous. It’s become really sophisticated and elegant,” effuses Kristin. This year, the gowns reflect the new red-carpet attitude associated with prom. The dresses at Memories to Last a Lifetime are chic, colourful, and reflect the new elegant style of the modern prom. “The dresses are gorgeous,” says Kristin. The vast selection of gowns at Memories includes dresses by Tony B by Tony Bowls, Love16, Night Moves, Blush, Tiffany, Tiffany Elite, Terani, and more. Besides a great selection of designers, Kristin has made sure her selection of samples includes gowns for every size. “We want girls to know that no matter what size you are, there’s a gown out there that you’ll love. We don’t want anyone to have to settle.” The same can be said for Memories’ bridal selection. The store carries beautiful gowns from James Cliffard, Maggie Sottero, Allure, and Mia Solano, to name a few. Gowns don’t just come in sizes zero to 12 because Kristin knows that brides come in all shapes and sizes. “We make sure we carry the styles and sizes so that all of our customers leave with a dress they can’t wait to wear,” says Kristin. At Memories, they know how important finding the perfect gown is to grads and brides-to-be, and they offer one-on-one

appointments to assure these young women get the care and attention they deserve to help them find the perfect dress. The vibrant young staff are passionate about fashion, and want to see each woman leave the store with a dress worthy of a trip down the aisle or across the stage. They’re always up on the latest trends in colour and style, and will do what it takes to find each customer an outstanding gown in their budget.

If you’re planning a wedding this year or getting ready to watch a special young lady accept her diploma, visit Memories to Last a Lifetime at 33 Broadway Street East in Yorkton to see how they can help get any young woman into the perfect dress. erry Pollock moved to Yorkton in 1969 and played with the Yorkton Terriers Senior hockey team while opening Neil’s Jewellery in the Broadway Park Plaza. Having come from a family in the jewellery business, he already had a great appreciation and understanding of the industry. Terry also travelled all across Canada as a representative for a European jewellery manufacturer, so he is well versed with everything jewellery related. While growing up in the industry, Terry’s own passion for jewellery and making people happy are what fuelled him to open his own store. Education as a jeweller and gemologist, along with his experience, makes him extremely qualified for the precise work performed at Gifts of Gold Jewellers. “Having a legacy in this city with our business is a point of pride. Family is a close-knit group of people and we have the same goals. With our family involved, people relate to us,” explains Terry. Family relations and values are central to the mandate of Gifts of Gold Jewellers.

In 1976, Terry and his wife Janet Pollock, along with Frank and Vi Matychuk, opened Gifts of Gold Jewellers. In 1980, Janet’s brother Michael joined them in the business, and in 1985 Michael and his wife Lynne Doll became partners as well. That partnership continues to this day and has expanded to include the acquisition of several residential and commercial property rental units throughout the Yorkton area. The group strives to provide good quality space at a fair price and to help support business development in the city. All in the group are committed to the city of Yorkton and aiding in its development. Terry and Michael are both active members in the Kinsmen and YBID, as well as other nonprofit groups in the community. YBID, Yorkton Business Improvement District, works to provide functional and tasteful development in Yorkton. Very active in community development and improvement, the people behind Gifts of Gold Jewellers work hard to make sure their store provides exactly what you need. There is no better way to do that than through customized jewellery made to your exact specifications. “We have a consultative approach when it comes to making jewellery for customers. We want it to be special,” says Michael genuinely. Getting jewellery custom made is a unique way to honour a relationship. Whether you design an engagement ring, family ring, special pendent, or something to celebrate any occasion, Gifts of Gold will ensure the quality and functionality of your piece.

“We have over 10 thousand wax moulds in stock for custom rings. Customers can bring in sketches of what they are thinking of and we make a wax mould. It’s called the lost-wax casting method. We are designers and goldsmiths,” affirms Michael. The craftsmanship and creativity that go into this process make your piece of jewellery original and thoughtful. “Customizing pieces makes them more sentimental. The customer takes pride in what they want, and we help them achieve that personal touch. We just take your ideas and turn it into the product. We can do almost anything. It helps preserve family legacies.” Aside from custom jewellery, Gifts of Gold also has an excellent selection of

unique pieces in store. The store carries elegant core products with timeless style, ensuring your investment is both meaningful and well thought out. Gifts of Gold is also proud to carry the most exquisite brands in watches, including Seiko, Pulsar, and Lorus. Gifts of Gold offers repair work on jewellery and watches, and can recommend advice on how to ensure your pieces last. Jewellery is an investment, and when the right pieces are bought and maintained, your investment will appreciate alongside sentimental value. They aim to exceed their customers’ expectations. Jewellery is an emotional investment.

No matter the monetary value, the piece is sentimental and meaningful to the person who owns it. The knowledgeable and amiable staff at Gifts of Gold Jewellers would love to help you choose momentous and expressive jewellery for your loved one, or help you through the process of customizing jewellery. Giftwrapping is also available on site, so that your thoughtful gift comes complete in a beautiful package. A shop full of history, Gifts of Gold Jewellers wants to help you plan your future. e don’t think people should have to leave Yorkton just to find some of your favourite labels or higher end fashions. You should always be able to shop local,” says Ashley Wilson, co-owner of Uptown Casuals in Yorkton.

While the store has been open for two years, new management has led to a complete overhaul and new look. Ashley and coowner Jessica Hull are constantly bringing in new stock, which means that you can find new items on the shelves every day. Uptown Casuals focuses on carrying premium brands and designers that are otherwise hard to find in the Yorkton area—they believe that no matter where you live, you should be able to find the clothes and accessories you want to wear. From designer denim by 7 For All Mankind to boots and shoes by Hunter and Steve Madden, Uptown Casuals has the big city brands you wouldn’t expect to find in a smaller centre. You can always find premium lines like J Brand, Hudson, Maison Scotch, Scotch and Soda, Co-Lab, and many more lining the shelves in every size. However, just because Uptown Casuals carries top name brands doesn’t mean they don’t make sure the rest of your outfit is affordable. “It’s all about mixing and matching certain items to create your ideal look,” says Ashley. “We’ve got designer jeans, but we also have great affordable tops so you can create multiple outfits while staying in your price range.” Both Ashley and Jessica have a flair for fashion and a passion for putting

together stylish and comfortable outfits. As young mothers, they both understand that style is just as important as function, and this attitude can be seen in the items they’ve hand picked for the store. The holiday season can often be a stressful one, but at Uptown Casuals, they want to see all of their customers enjoy the festive spirit. With Christmas fast approaching, Ashley and Jessica have doubled the regular shipments, stocking the shelves to ensure everyone finds that perfect gift or the right outfit for your holiday parties. Ashley and Jessica always strive to make shopping at Uptown Casuals comfortable, especially during the blustery holiday season. They always have coffee brewing and popcorn popping. No matter who you’re shopping for, Uptown Casuals has something for everyone on your Christmas list. Stop in and talk to Ashley, Jessica, or one of their friendly and knowledgeable staff members to see how they can help you find a gift for anyone on your list this year. Of course, if you need an outfit for any Christmas party or to ring in the New Year, Uptown Casuals has you covered with a beautiful selection of holiday fashions and accessories. For those who can’t make it all the way to Yorkton to shop this winter, you can always browse and order Uptown Casual’s latest arrivals on Facebook. Ashley and Jessica always respond promptly and can ship across the country. To visit the store in person, stop by Uptown Casuals at 19C Broadway Street East in Yorkton. n October 1st 1997, an enchanted Christmas store became a reality. Beginning as a temporary store in the mall, The Plum Tree was a dream experience, offering unique, timeless, and one of a kind decorations. Knowing what we could offer for Christmas, customers inquired about home and every day décor. I was inspired to grow my store, which is now located in the Linden Square Mall. Whatever size of home, business, or office, the friendly and knowledgeable staff can assist you with décor options. The store is filled with unique and interesting pieces to accent your space, with everything from the “wow” factor, to a peaceful and serene atmosphere, and all that’s in between. As the owner and founder, my experience has included decorating homes, weddings, special events, car dealerships, and malls. I can help you turn any room into your space. We have many tantalizing flavours to spur your taste buds. Loose tea from Tea Forté, tea balls, garlic box dips and spreads, sunflower and cashew brittles, hot chocolates in many flavours, chocolate pizzas, and cheese ball mixes, are just some of the succulent treats we have to offer. Park’s Jewellery is a big supporter of local sport. “We have sponsored the player of the month for the Yorkton Terrier Junior A hockey club since shortly after their inception, and we have done the same for the Melville Millionaires Junior A club for the last five years. For their efforts, the players receive an Esquire watch which has been personalized just for them,” explains Shirley. Engagement and wedding rings are staple items for the jewellery industry. The husband and wife team, married for 33 years, is always thrilled to help. “When someone finds ‘the ring,’ it’s awesome. You can feel their excitement and you get excited with them,” says the couple. Customers now have the option to have Canadian diamonds set into any

Each Canadian diamond has a number lasered on it specific to that diamond. “It’s like a birth certificate that says it originated in Canada,” says Shirley. If a watch is what you are looking for, you will find Bulova, Citizen, Seiko, Esquire, and Bering, to name a few. There are self-winding, kinetic, solar powered, and battery operated watches to choose from. When you enter the building, you come into a hallway warmed with a collection of Bernie Brown pictures. Yorkton Hearing Services offers advice for clients, examinations, and referrals for all hearing needs. Marina provides full hearing evaluations for anyone sensing a problem, as well as evaluations for industrial clients. “A doctor’s referral is not required to receive an evaluation,” says Marina. “If you feel like you’re turning up the TV too loud or missing things happening around you, we can find out what the problem is and how to help it.” Once a hearing evaluation is completed, Marina counsels the individual regarding their hearing loss. If there is a medical

problem, she will refer her client to a physician or an ear, nose and throat specialist. If hearing aids are necessary, Marina can provide clients with the latest hearing aid technology including Bluetooth enabled hearing aids, directional microphones on hearing aids – fine-tuned to shut out background noise and focus your hearing where you want – and assistive listening devices for televisions and telephones. “Hearing aids are not like they used to be. Like cell phones, they have become smaller and more discreet over time,” adds Marina.

“Today’s hearing aids are hardly noticeable, and can help with all kinds of hearing losses.” Clients at Yorkton Hearing Services receive a 60 day trial period for devices, and a three year warranty on hearing aids. Most insurance companies will pay up to $500 towards hearing aids if you are tested by a registered audiologist like Marina. The 10 Biggest Myths about Weight Loss Surgery re i befo Pegg lbs 4 at 24 30-40 years ago, weight loss surgery was a high-risk operation. Today,

Myth: Weight loss surgery has high risks

REALITY: experienced surgeons can safely perform the bariatric procedures, with similar risks to any other routine surgery.

Myth: Surgery is the “easy way out”

REALITY: Taking the easy way out is to do nothing. For many severely overweight patients, weight loss surgery is the only viable option that can improve their health. Gaining permanent control over your weight requires a huge commitment to attending educational seminars, support groups and making lifestyle changes, and is a very brave and personal decision.

Myth: To qualify for weight loss surgery, you have to weigh over 300 pounds

REALITY: Weight loss surgery candidates are often considered by healthcare organizations according to individual health conditions and a calculation of Body Mass Index (BMI). People who are only 50 pounds overweight can qualify for the procedure, and studies show even moderately obese patients who undergo surgery have obvious health improvements.

Myth: You need serious health conditions to qualify for weight loss surgery

REALITY: Candidates are considered based on individual health conditions and BMI calculations. Because so many health problems are caused by obesity, weight loss surgery can be an excellent preventative measure.

Myth: To qualify for weight loss surgery, you have to be in perfect health

REALITY: While some cases are more advanced than others, many patients undergoing weight loss surgery have obesity-related health conditions. To find out if you qualify for weight loss surgery, Weight Loss Forever has an in-depth medical and psychological assessment that is required.

Myth: To qualify for weight loss surgery, you have to be a certain age

REALITY: The age range at most surgical centres can be as wide as 18 to 65, and studies show definite benefits for patients above and below that age range who undergo surgery.

Myth: After surgery, you’ll have a great big scar

REALITY: Over 99 per cent of our weight loss surgeries are performed laparoscopically, which means instead of making one great, big incision, surgeons will make several very small ones (less than one inch) along the abdomen.

“Time and time again, I tried to find the weight loss solution that “worked for me”… only to fail horribly. Years and YEARS of suffering from humiliation, frustration, yo-yo dieting, spending hard-earned money – uselessly – on “temporary band-aids”, continuous failure, lack of self-confidence, self-blame, faking strength while suffering from depression, chronic pain, tons of different medications for medical conditions that stemmed from being obese, feeling self-conscious in public, it’s all over!! There are no words that will ever truly explain how grateful I am to the amazing Dr Pompa, and every fantastic staff member of WLF. Thank you for giving me a life WORTH living. Thank you for empowering me to take back my life. Thank you for giving me back ME!” Peggi Cheverie, in her own words

Myth: After weight loss surgery, it takes a long time to recover

REALITY: Most patients recover in a week or two and some even return to work and regular activities in a just a couple of days.

Myth: After weight loss surgery, you can’t eat anything “good”

REALITY: Most patients can eat a wide variety of food in small quantities after weight loss surgery. If you have any questions, feel free to contact a patient facilitator—tha ey have all had the surgery and have gone though what you are!

Myth: Except for looking better, weight loss surgery has no major benefits

REALITY: Aside from loving the way you look and feel about yourself, weight loss surgery can significantly help with, or in some cases completely eliminate various health problems. And to us, that’s pretty major!

Weight Loss Forever ’s data shows a longer and more regimented preoperative dietary phase and a graduated postoperative diet is one of the most effective ways to minimize complications as well as increase patient compliance and long-term weight loss success.

Weight Loss Forever’s average patient had an initial BMI of 41.7 and at 2 years post surgery, their average BMI was 25.7 with a total of 111.2 lbs lost on average, or 97.2% of their excess weight.

Changing lifestyle habits such as activity levels, nutritional choices, emotional eating, self-image challenges and other issues typical in bariatric patients are difficult to maintain and require long-term one-on-one support, which Weight Loss Forever provides. Paying it

Forward

By Jamie Fischer Photos rachel & clint KraynicK

Rachel and Clint Kraynick have suffered the worst tragedy any parent can imagine—the loss of a child. Their son Chase was an energetic, loving, spirited boy who loved to play with his younger brother Cooper, tag along with his dad for the farm chores, and spend time with his mother in the kitchen as she baked. On May 24, 2011, he died in a farming accident. Chase was only six years old. In 2011, the Canora Junior Elementary School taught all of their students that it only takes one person to make a difference, and that if everyone pays it forward, a small gesture can effect big change. Students were given three cards with instructions to pay it forward. Each time they did a selfless act for someone else, they gave them the card to pass it on. Right away, Chase was on the look out for ways to help his friends and neighbours. “He had such a good heart. It made me proud that he took this so seriously and he took this lesson plan to heart,” says Chase’s mom, Rachel Kraynick. “It’s not like he had money to buy things for people, he could just do things from the heart.”

32

FineLifestyles

PARKLAND

Whether it was helping his parents, shovelling for the neighbours, or simply taking the time to open a door for someone, Chase was ready to lend a hand and brighten someone’s day. Knowing how much paying it forward meant to him, Chase’s family handed out the cards at his funeral. Since then, the principal of Pay it Forward has dominated Rachel Kraynick’s life, and with the use of social media, she’s spreading Chase’s message across the province. Kraynick was constantly approached with stories about how Chase had inspired more people to keep paying it forward. “These stories were so amazing, I couldn’t not share them with everyone. So that’s when we decided to do the blog,” explains Kraynick. Her blog is a collection of stories from community members who continue to pay it forward. There’s also an option to download your own Chase Kraynick Pay it forward card, so anyone, no matter where they are, can be inspired by Chase’s passion for kindness and generosity. By the end of last summer, Rachel decided

it was time to use one of Chase’s cards herself, and in a big way. She’s now on a mission to get Canora its first splash park. The design is inspired by everything her son loved, featuring farming equipment, sports, and animals. The community has stepped up to support the project with everything from commercial and private fundraisers to donations. The project is also entered in the Aviva Community Fund competition, and has a chance to win $100,000. The second round of competition begins Dec. 3, 2012. To support the Chase Kraynick Pay it Forward Splash Park and learn, visit www. avivacommunityfund.com. Local groups and schools are taking lessons from Chase. At Yorkton Regional High School, a colleague showed vice principal Johnna McBride a video on the blog, and she recognized the educational value. “That video captured everything I thought our students needed to hear,” says McBride. “If six year olds can do it, then 16-year-olds can do it.” The school did a week long pay it forward campaign during education week in October. “When I left school on the Friday before I said my biggest fear was that no one was going to do anything,” says McBride. The students stepped up to the challenge, and the week was a success. “It was a slow start, it wasn’t very natural for people,” explains McBride. “But throughout the week people really felt the reward of doing random kindness and expecting nothing in return.” To show their pride in the pay it forward campaign, the students were given two Chase pay it forward cards and a pay it forward bracelet during the week. After their first two pay it forward acts, they handed out their cards, and after the last, they gave away their bracelets. The first time Rachel Kraynick saw someone wearing one of the bracelets, she was overwhelmed. “It’s awesome. It makes me feel good that people are trying to make a difference and bettering our community,” she says. “It’s heartwarming and inspiring. That’s how I live my life every day now.” Seeing the influence Chase has had makes Kraynick proud, and it’s helped her through her tragic loss.

ocated 13 kilometres east of Canora in the hamlet of Mikado is Saskatchewan’s best kept secret, Zeke’s Grill and Lounge. As the English idiom goes, never judge a book by its cover. This holds true for Zeke’s. “We are housed in what was the Mikado Curling Rink. Many people don’t even know we are in here,” explains owner Sandy Zielinski. In 2007, Sandy’s husband Blake and his brothers purchased the curling rink with full intentions of turning it into a shop for their farming and trucking operations, but thought they’d throw one last curling bonspiel. That was five bonspiels ago. Last year, the Zielinski’s realized that their dreams of housing their equipment in a big beautiful shop probably wasn’t going to happen, but they needed to use

the building more than just once a year. Blake asked Sandy how she felt about opening a restaurant and bar. Six months later Zeke’s was born, opening its doors to the public in January 2012. Despite its appearance on the outside, “which, of course, still looks just like the community curling rink,” inside is a different story. This grill, restaurant, lounge, bar, and home-away-from-home has an overall atmosphere of camaraderie, fellowship and relaxation. The ambiance will have you feeling so comfortable and content that you’ll linger longer than you thought you had time for, and come back as quickly as you can manage. Zeke’s treats you like family, and after your first visit you often feel like you are. It’s not unheard of for Zeke customers to hang around just to visit with other customers, or for staff

to pull up a chair and join in the table talk. The atmosphere isn’t the only thing that’ll bring you back. Destined for a feature on a food television series, the majority of Zeke’s food is freshly prepared. “The burgers are made fresh, our soups are all from scratch using only real ingredients, and our soup noodles are even made inhouse. Our dry ribs and chicken fingers are hand-cut and we make our own breading. Everything is uniquely and specially made,” explains Zielinski. Zeke’s introduces four new dishes every one or two months to their specials menu, and all staff has a hand in those offerings. “The staff members are always bringing in food and drink recipe ideas to try. They are some of the most creative and inventive people I’ve ever had the good fortune to work with, and are a real blessing to us

and our community,” Zielinski raves. All this and so much more, like their food challenge, the Dirty, and Zeke’s 927 Club. But don’t take our word for it, come see for yourself—check out the Facebook page, or head down for the real experience. Amazing food, great fun, and friendly people will create the Zeke’s experience that will turn you into one of their many loyal customers. FLP

We have a lot to celebrate at the Godfrey Dean: December is our 10-year anniversary of becoming an independent gallery, after many years of successful programming by the Yorkton Arts Council. The council (45 years) and the Yorkton Film Festival (65 years) also reached significant milestones this year. This gave us the chance to look around and find the best exhibition we could put together to mark the occasion.

Artist Lionel Peyachew’s work is well known in Yorkton. He created the Doorways to Opportunity centennial sculpture in Shaw Park and the gorgeous Counting Coup bronze riders in front of the Painted Hand Casino. Edward Poitras is another of Saskatchewan’s most highly recognized artists. His installation Pile of Cars lights up the Godfrey Dean lobby 24 hours a day, until December 14th.

A casual visit by Peter Sametz of the Saskatchewan Arts Board led to the question: Could we borrow an entire exhibition of great Saskatchewan art from their Permanent Collection? Galleries often borrow a few works to complete their exhibitions, but it was the first time an independent director asked to curate an entire show from their vaults.

The Dean Gallery is working to establish a reputation for exhibiting fine art photography, but this fall and winter the focus is on painting, ceramics, sculpture and more painting. In the new year we’ll see contrasts in scale with two touring shows from Saskatoon’s Mendel Art Gallery. In January and February Forced Perspective brings us works that vary wildly, from miniature to panorama, romantic to satirical. It’s followed by large portrait paintings of families by Michèle Mackasey that capture the bond between mothers and their children in face à nous, on exhibit during March and April.

After consideration, the answer was an enthusiastic yes! In part because when the Godfrey Dean Cultural Centre opened 30 years ago in 1981, the first exhibition was loaned by the Arts Board and featured well-known artists and art works. For over a year gallery director Donald Stein travelled to Regina, going through the collection again and again to refine the choices. With time to reflect on the impact of each work, the exhibition slowly took shape. Paintings, sculpture, ceramics, photography, fabric, and installation pieces all resonate to create a complete experience. Treasures from the Vault features great Canadian art by Saskatchewan artists, including many who are also collected by the National Gallery and large institutions across the country. Kenneth Lochhead’s painting The Bonspiel is a Canadian icon, alongside works by Joe Fafard, Victor Cicansky, Arthur MacKay, Ted Godwin, Otto Rogers and Dorothy Knowles.

For many, the highlight of the spring might be Pocketful of Miracles, a solo exhibition of hundreds of tiny, perfect paintings by local favourite artist Jeann Spilak. The opening reception in March will be a seasonal highlight and we hope to see you here. Follow the gallery website at deangallery.ca or on facebook.com/GodfreyDeanArtGallery to stay up to date. Or take out a membership, support the gallery and get on the mailing list. Treasures from the Vault is on now. It closes on December 14th. Don’t miss the chance to see all this work together in public for the first time. Yorkton is the only venue, and then it all goes back to the vault!

ocated in downtown Yorkton, the York House restaurant is the best upscale dining choice in the city. Since they opened their doors on July 17th 2001, the restaurant has become a local tradition for the residents of Yorkton. Owners, Manos and Carrie Tsagouris, both grew up in Greece. in their restaurant. The York House is intended to make you feel at home. People really appreciate the relaxed ambiance and Carrie’s handpicked décor. The York House resembles her own home, which makes sense; Carrie feels she has created another home through her restaurant. The space is designed to make customers feel comfortable and welcome. The fireplace, the restaurant’s focal point, and soft music create a cozy, quiet environment. After moving to Saskatchewan 35 years ago, Manos gained extensive experience in the restaurant business

in Regina. In the early 80’s, Manos and his brother moved to Melville, and opened the popular Flamingo restaurant, which consistently had line-ups out the door. Manos sold the restaurant, and he and Carrie returned to Greece. A short time later, the couple returned to Saskatchewan, settling in Yorkton. Recognizing that Yorkton needed and deserved an upscale restaurant, Manos bought a mechanic’s garage and cleverly transformed it into the much anticipated, York House. The restaurant is family-run, and you can even find Carrie and Manos’ two sons, Demetre and Odysseas helping out.

The York House receives rave reviews for their excellent cuisine. Serving high quality Greek dishes, fine wines, decadent desserts, and steaks cooked to perfection, the food is fresh and made with care. And it should be, as Manos is the head chef who puts his heart into his cooking. He often experiments, inventing and re-inventing dishes using herbs from his garden. Manos also listens to his community and adapts his menu to what people want. People from around the country and all over the world have come for the food served at the York House, sometimes even twice in the same day. You can enjoy the same excellent menu in the restaurant’s dining room or lounge. Manos and Carrie would like to thank the people of Yorkton and surrounding area for making the restaurant a success, and wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season. They invite you to come relax and enjoy the holidays and New Year with tasty food, a warm and cozy atmosphere, and great company. Matysio, along with co-star Clinton Carew, recently wrapped up Regina’s Globe Theatre production of the Scottish play Midsummer [A Play With Songs]. Matysio has been stage acting for several years. Perhaps her most memorable performance was in the Globe Theatre’s 2010 The Syringa Tree. “It was a one-woman show in which I played over 20 characters and somewhere around 15 regional South African dialects.” Preparing for that performance was a feat. “I started working on the dialects about four months ahead of time,” explains Matysio. “It was hard and it was amazing. It’s one of those shows that I had so much to learn. Realistically, I never actually thought it was going to come together at all. It taught me so much about myself as a performer, about the personal drive and work ethic required . . . you know, I had to cut out a lot of the drinking!” The hilarious web series inSAYSHAble (www.insayshableonline. com) was created, written and co-produced by Matysio, in conjunction with Minds Eye Entertainment. This mini-series looks at a week in the life of Saysha: a bold, awkward, yet lovable character born from Matysio’s imagination. Directed by Jeff Beesley, inSAYSHAble was a team effort Matysio remembers fondly. “I got to work with some artists from my comedic circles, like Christina [Sicoli] who plays Fran—she’s such a good friend of mine. It was a really great opportunity to collaborate and play these strong, audacious female characters, and make them messy and not always pretty. That’s what makes comedy so fun.” Minds Eye producer Mark Montague worked with Matysio. “We’d been friends since elementary school, so it was a great coming together after all these years working near each other in film and TV.” The closeness of the film industry is something Matysio admires. “The amazing thing about Saskatchewan is that it’s such a small

and unique community. It is also one of the saddest things about the community disbanding and going away—you’re losing your friends, but you’re also losing these incredibly talented colleagues.” This spring, the provincial government cut the Film Employment Tax Credit, putting enormous strain on the industry. Matysio had a lead role in the movie known as Saskatchewan’s last big one: Stranded. “The last few days [of filming] were very bittersweet. We were making this really fantastic film and it was such a rewarding experience with world renowned talent: the director [Roger Christian], Christian [Slater] . . . it’s heartbreaking, is what it was. It’s just really sad.” “Stranded was such an incredible opportunity for me,” continues Matysio. The science fiction thriller, produced by Mind’s Eye Entertainment, was shot in Regina. It wasn’t the only film Matysio starred in within her home town. Just Friends (2005) was “the first time I got to work on a large budget film like that . . . learning the ropes, and being exposed to the big picture of how it all worked at that level. It was exciting for me and gratifying and fun. The role was great, and the people were amazing. I think I’ll always remember that as one of my favorite projects in Saskatchewan.” Matysio believes that hard work and perseverance pay off. “Work begets work. And I’m one of those people who will keep working until I get those big jobs that I want.” She has an impressive list of credits behind her name already: the female lead, Chelsea, in the Single White Spenny television series; other television appearances including Corner Gas and Little Mosque on the Prairie; movie roles in Mulligans, Chained, Vampire Dog, Ferocious, Dolan’s Cadillac, Sleepwalking, and more. With six Canadian Comedy Award nominations—five for her work with the General Fools Improv Troupe and one for her role on Single White Spenny—comedy is something Matysio has always enjoyed. “I’ve always understood how to make somebody laugh. I think when you figure that out, it’s the best

thing ever. Making someone laugh is awesome.” Matysio sees more of the same in her future. In ten years, “I will be doing this for sure. I don’t see myself not doing this.” Matysio has worked hard for her roles, and admits there is a learning process. “You have to find inner confidence because you might not always have it on the outside . . . and always know that nobody owes you anything. You don’t get jobs just because you’re here. You still have to be the right person for the job.” “I’m a pretty loud person, a pretty strong woman, pretty ballsy girl. As my sister says, ‘please use your indoor voice more often.’ ” Recognizing that it’s important to have support, Matysio appreciates her family, friends and boyfriend. “My family has always been extremely supportive, and that’s been really invaluable to me.” Matysio met her boyfriend, musician Karrnnel Sawitsky, three years ago at the 2009 Lieutenant Governor’s Arts Awards. Both artists were nominated in the under- 30 category. Although neither won, the experience brought them together as a couple. “I’m supported and understood,” says Matysio. Karrnnel, as he’s known musically, is a fiddle player for the quartet, The Fretless. This fall, The Fretless won the 2012 Western Canadian Music Awards’ Instrumental Recording of the Year for their album Waterbound. Does Matysio have a musical side herself? “I sing and I play piano. I wish I was a rock star, like everybody!” she laughs. The two are collaborating on a non-profit venture to inspire and support kids to go into the arts. “I think it’s important to reach out and say this is the state of the arts, this is how you can enter, and this is how you can branch out. It’s about confidence, and finding it, and knowing you can have it.” Matysio adds, “I want to keep growing, and I want to keep learning. As much as I’ve been inspired by the people that I’ve worked with, I hope to be able to pass that on to other people and to young artists and help them.” Matysio reflects on advice that she has received during her journey through the acting world. “There’s a piece of advice that floats with a lot of my friends: f– ’em if they can’t take a joke,” she laughs. “It really does just mean you have to have humor and humility. You have to work hard, and you have to go for things, but in the end, you have to still be happy with what you’re doing. Working to please others all the time is not going to get you very far. Comedy is great because you can use it to remind people how ridiculous we all are. So relax and learn to laugh. You’ll look younger!” On Matysio’s horizon is a new documentary series airing on CityTV. Launched in October, On Site takes a look at the mega projects all over the province. As the series host, Matysio laughs, “I went on a crazy adventure! It was great to explore what goes goes on in this province from an industrial perspective, meet people and ask them about what they’re doing.” Passionate about her work and knowing she’s finding her place in the industry, Matysio confides, “Every time someone says, ‘I watched inSAYASHAble and you are funny,’ I think, thank you, that’s what I was trying to do. I’m always going to want to make people laugh.” This charming and effusive Saskatchewan actress and performer continues to grow and succeed in her multi-faceted career. Matysio’s zest for life, her work ethic and her talent will carry her a long way. et’s face it, most people who have travelled now have the travel bug—I know I do. It is getting cold outside, which means it is time to plan your allinclusive vacation. There are some naysayers that warn us about travelling to certain destinations, like Mexico, because they claim it is dangerous. I say if you are a smart traveller, then there is nothing to worry about. Let me teach you how to be smarter. Your journey starts well before you board your plane. Be organized. Gather all documentation required for your trip—passports, tickets, insurance cards, and so on—in order to have a stress free start to your vacation. Leave copies of your itinerary and passport data page with family or friends, so you can be contacted in case of an emergency. Don’t over-pack. Only take what you need and avoid baggage charges. The average charter allows 44lbs of checked luggage in one bag per person.

Be on time. Leave yourself ample opportunity to overcome any situation that may arise during your journey to the airport, like bad weather. Remember, most charter flights will not allow you to check in past 60 minutes prior to departure. Be educated. Ask your travel professional a ton of questions. Have them describe to you what you should expect, just so there are not any surprises. I like to tell my clients what will happen step by step from the time they arrive at the airport, until they arrive at the resort. Ask where your destination representative will be. Knowing that you will have someone to help you on site should alleviate some of your stress. Once at your destination, please attend the informational seminar that is provided by the tour operators; they will tell you all you the up to date information about the destination. Go where the tourists go. If you want to leave your resort and explore, go where the tourists go. Stay away from the areas not visited by foreigners. Go on tour operator guided excursions and

don’t wander off on your own. Do not give criminals a chance. Violence and crime seems to be one of opportunity, so do not put yourself in any situation where something could happen. To avoid being a target of crime, do not wear conspicuous clothing or jewelry and do not carry excessive amounts of money. Stay put at night. Most resorts have activities at night for their guests. Attend them, and stay on the resort in the evening. We always like to say that you are protected at your resort and on your own off the resort. Our job as travel professionals is to educate you on the destination you choose. While we’ll share our opinion on safety, remember; do not go anywhere that you will not feel safe. One’s preconceived ideas can really set the tone for a trip. A prepared traveller is a relaxed traveller, but a knowledgeable traveller is a safe traveller. FLP

Horizon Credit Union today, tomorrow, together

C

redit unions have served the financial needs of people in Saskatchewan for the past 75 years, always with a central mandate of cooperation and compassion. At the time of credit unions’ beginning in Saskatchewan, many banks and other financial institutions were not able to meet the financial needs of Saskatchewan people. People recognized a need for fiscal responsibility with a conscious, and so credit unions came to be in Saskatchewan. Neighbours, or in many cases, people with a common bond of employment, joined together and formed Credit Unions with the philosophy of neighbour helping neighbour in order to provide loans to those in need by providing savings dollars when possible.

Other financial institutions operate on profits for shareholders. These financial institutions came to the province to profit during prosperous years, but pulled back during less profitable years. This is a major difference for credit unions. Credit Unions are owned by the people who use their financial services, the members, and are in the community for the long haul. Decisions about the well being of their credit union are still made by members, not managers, and members are not pressured for large profits by shareholders, but rather by the needs of other members and community well being. Horizon Credit Union is constantly changing the products and services it provides for members. They have moved from the hip pocket approach to a highly

technological, skilled, and sophisticated product delivery. Now it not only serves members in the areas of Melville, Grayson, Neudorf, Grenfell and Wolseley, but beyond. Once you are a member of Horizon Credit Union, there is no need to move your accounts. If you have to leave this area, they are still able to provide great products and services for you in a technological capacity. As a local business, Horizon Credit Union recognizes the importance of building strong communities, and currently employs over 60 people. In 2011, their staff volunteered more than 2600 hours in their communities, and Horizon Credit Union invested more than $50,000 in local clubs and organizations in support of youth,

culture, sports, and health initiatives. In addition, Horizon Credit Union continues to invest in community infrastructure such as health and sport facilities that benefit the entire community and beyond.

If you live in the Parkland area and have not yet discovered the Horizon Credit Union experience, come meet the financial experts and join the institution that is embedded in the community. They not only provide members with all their financial needs, but are also committed to community growth and development. Horizon Credit Union, like many other credit unions in Saskatchewan, has its focus on providing appropriate financial services to its members in today’s complicated economy. They operate their business so that the credit union is here to provide financial services for its members today, tomorrow, and long into the future. How do they do it? They do it by working together under the co-operative principles and philosophy of people helping people, just as they did when it all began. FLP Horizon Credit Union www.horizoncu.ca

he city of Melville recognized thirty years ago the need for a Communiplex that would serve the city and surrounding communities. After two attempts to build the project, the community and city council came together a third time to make the Communiplex a reality. A committee was formed in 2007 to spearhead the project and begin fundraising. A combination of federal and provincial government grants and a local fundraising drive helped get the project going. “We approached 29 area communities, along with the city, to get support for the project,” says Mayor Walter Streelasky. “That support led us to receive grants from the province and the federal government. It was quite an achievement.” The community

also raised funds through the 1000 for $1000 fundraising drive. “Community members were offered the chance to donate $1000, with the goal of getting 1000 donations of $1000,” says Heather Miller, Melville’s Parks, Recreation and Leisure Services Manager. “Those donors are now featured on our Wall of Fame at the Centre.” Ground was broken in August 2009, and in 2011 the hard work paid off. Construction on the Communiplex was completed and the naming rights sold to Horizon Credit Union. On October 16, 2011, Horizon Credit Union Centre opened its doors to the community. The centre features a convention centre, 1,525-seat arena, lounge, boardroom, walking track, and Family Fitness and

Cardiac Care Centre. “This complex was a long time coming,” says Heather. “Thanks to excellent long-term planning and a committed council, here we are.” The Horizon Credit Union Centre is now home to the Melville Millionaires, the city’s local SJHL hockey team, and the arena also hosts a variety of sporting events and concerts. The convention centre is able to hold any number of functions from conferences and trade shows to weddings and social events. The Cardiac Care Centre is used by the Sunrise Health Region for fitness sessions for local cardiac patients, and the fitness centre offers classes including beginner fitness and yoga. “We’re the only rink in Saskatchewan with a registered nurse, “says Mayor Streelasky. “And, our

Cardiac Care and Family Fitness Centre is so valuable to the community. We host cardiac care programs now, and we’re looking at developing programs for those with Type two diabetes and other health issues.” The walking track provides local residents with a place to walk all year-round, and the ice rink hosts not only hockey games, but also practices and summer ice facilities for surrounding communities. “We’ve got many events booked into our facilities right into 2014,” says Heather. “If you want to reserve a space, or learn more about the programs we offer, just give us a call. We’re always happy to work with all the members of the community.” To learn more, visit tourismmelville.com or call the centre at 306.728.6860. FLP

Many places in Saskatchewan consider the local rink to be the heart of the community. The Horizon Credit Union Centre in Melville is definitely at the heart of this community. Opened in late Fall 2011, the Horizon Credit Union Centre is a place where people of all ages, from all over gather for a variety of activities. The 1524 seat arena is home to the Melville Millionaires hockey team, which fans have been cheering on since 1908. Along with a thriving minor hockey program, the arena also hosts figure skating, adult recreational hockey teams, and speed skating.

their recovery from a heart event. The Cardiac Care Family Fitness Centre has also become a place to gather for fitness and yoga classes.

But this is more than just a rink. A rubberized walking track was installed so that residents and visitors could enjoy a walk, no matter what the weather. In a partnership with Sunrise Health Region, a Cardiac Care Rehab program has taken root. Participants are given a solid foundation of education about diet, exercise, and lifestyle to encourage them in

The trophy cases in the lobby show a snapshot of Melville’s pride in sport going back many years. Names that may not be well-known around the world are local legends in these parts. Their contributions to the community have paved the way for generations to come, and show how the rink continues to be at the heart.

56

The 500-person Convention Centre is a very popular place for wedding receptions, cabarets, and meetings. The modern, elegant space is perfect to welcome visitors from all over, and to gather friends for a special celebration.

EMW was started in 1971 as a Saltcoats area welding and repair shop. Founders Ewen and Shirley Morrison worked hard to grow the business, and as grain elevators used their services more and more, they expanded their business and hired more employees. “In the beginning there was just me and my truck,” recalls Ewen. “I went out to this grain elevator and my welding cables wouldn’t reach the top. So I went home and Shirley and

I spent all night fixing up old welding cables with electrical tape. I went back the next day and I haven’t stopped since.” From these humble beginnings, the company has grown to employ over 220 people and work in all industrial industries. Many are family members, while others have become family. Ewen has always believed, and put into action, that “everybody gets a chance to succeed in the company.”

In 2007, Morrison decided to change the ownership structure of EMW. Fifteen members of the EMW’s management team executed what Morrison calls a “management buy-in.” “This management buy-in will provide stability and new capacity for EMW. Ewen will remain on as CEO and will be fully engaged in the business. EMW’s employees are spread across Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta. Although employees are spread across the prairies, EMW is proud to call Saltcoats home. EMW takes employee health and safety very seriously. “An injury and accident free workplace is our goal, one where everyone comes home safe,” says Ewen. As a result, employees at every level, including management, are responsible and accountable for the company’s overall safety initiatives. EMW expects that every employee will actively participate to ensure the safety excellence and stringent standards that the company expects. Management is committed to providing proper equipment, training, and procedures. From there, employees are responsible for following correct safety procedures and for improving on current safety measures. These standards have resulted in EMW being an award winning safety leader. From one truck and a handful of contracts to a world class Industrial leader, Ewen and Shirley have managed to turn EMW Industries into a prairie success story. FLP

mortgage can be quite a scary document, buts let’s be realistic— for most people it is very boring. I want to touch on one important mortgage feature, the pre-payment penalties. In the 25 years that I have been in the lending business, almost every person who has taken a mortgage has asked, “Can we pay this off early?” While people may have good intentions, most people do not make early payments. I guess they want to be prepared for lotto 6/49 payout.

66

FineLifestyles

PARKLAND

Most mortgages are partially closed. A closed mortgage means absolutely no extra cash can go on it without penalty. I have yet to see one of these—most allow some pre-payments. You may wonder why the bank would penalize you for paying off debt early. Lenders charge a penalty because they have bought the money and then sold it to you. When they bought the money, they signed a contract with the seller for a specific time frame, say five years. They then took that “fiveyear” money and sold it to someone who wanted a five-year term on a mortgage. If you pay it back early, they have to find a new home for the money, and are unable to return it due to contractual obligations. If you do want to pay your mortgage off sooner, most can be paid off within seven or less years without a penalty. The average mortgage carries three prepayment privileges—lump sum payment, increasing your regular payments, and accelerated payments. The lump sum varies from 10% to 20% of the original principal amount, payment increase varies from 20% to 100% of your regular monthly payment, and accelerated payments are when the lender allows you to pay more than your monthly through frequency. If you have a $1000/month payment and you ask for an accelerated bi-weekly payment of $500, you will pay $13,000/year versus $12,000. If you take advantage of every prepayment feature your mortgage has, you can pay it off quickly. For example, if you had a $200,000 mortgage over 25 years with a five year fixed rate of 3.04%, your

payment would be $950.60/month. If you increased the payments by 20% to $1,140.72, changed them to accelerated bi-weekly of $570.36, and put down 10% ($20,000) every year, the amortization would be just under seven years. If the goal is to payoff your mortgage fast, it can be done. Where most people get hit with a pre-payment penalty is when selling or refinancing their home. If you take out a $200,000 mortgage for a five year term and sell your house in the second year, you will receive a penalty, most likely an Interest Differential Penalty of around $2,000-$3000. If you are going to buy another home and require a mortgage for the same or higher amount AND you use the same lender, you can take your mortgage with you to the next property. Refinancing can be tricky. You have the $200,000 mortgage, property values escalate rapidly, and you suddenly have mountains of equity in your home. At the same time, your personal finance situation requires money. You have the opportunity to re-finance and get equity out, but you will have to break that mortgage contract. Some of my lenders will do a second mortgage, but it will be at a higher rate. The key is some forward planning. When clients come to be with a boatload of cash for a down payment, I always counsel them to see if they have a better place for that money, because once they invest it in their home and wrap a five year mortgage term around it, difficulties arise trying to get it out. We can help you. FLP

The owner, Stephanie Buckle, is a young and experienced florist. Stephanie’s interest in working as a florist began when she worked as a delivery driver when she was only fifteen. She travelled and worked all over Canada, including in Ontario and Saskatoon, where she had a chance to learn from many amazing florists. In 2007, Stephanie was fortunate to be one of the florists selected to work on arrangements for the Juno Awards in Saskatoon. Now, at 25, she has returned to Yorkton and her classmates’ prediction has come true; she now has her own flower shop. “I love the challenges of running a business and making people happy,” says Stephanie. “This is something I’ve always wanted to do.” Stephanie’s shop, All About Flowers, is an original and creative flower shop located at 146 Broadway Street East. What’s NeW aNd Next for 2013? By Meredith heron

can practically feel your eyes rolling and hear your groans as I write this—another designer telling you what’s trending for the coming year. You’d think we get a commission for our efforts to sell you on the newest, the greatest or “you’ve got to have it,” for fear of looking passé or out of touch with your home décor. More interesting than the latest trends are the methods by which they are conveyed and shared; welcome to the underbelly of the design world and straight-up decor delight. Do you Pin? Pinterest.com is a photo-sharing site that allows people to “pin” a picture from just about anywhere, and then have their followers “re-pin” to their own categorized boards. There are many categories set out by Pinterest that help you to search items, genres or concepts. For example, I’m currently designing a cupcake shoppe here in Toronto, and I was looking for ideas involving wooden spoons as art. I decided to broaden my search to “spoon art,” and found a seemingly endless array of it. Who knew plastic spoons could be turned into ombre wreaths? Pinterest offers a joyful variety of inspiration from fashion, to recipes, design, décor, landscaping and more. I often suggest that clients join the site, and pin inspirational ideas for their projects there; I follow them so that I can see their boards. They even allow you to make comments, such as “Over my dead body, we are so not doing that in your dining room!” To follow my boards, just put Meredith Heron into the search and hit Follow All. If you are considering a design or renovation project, another great site is Houzz.com, which just keeps growing in leaps and bounds. Designers like me have professional accounts and upload our projects for people to see, share and add to their inspiration boards. Again, you can share your boards and collect design ideas; you can even ask the designers specific questions, but I will caution you on this one: I get

hundreds of questions from people who are looking to copy or doit-yourself an idea or space of mine, but designers don’t look kindly at questions that enable our work to be copied, and this includes our suppliers. Use the site for inspiration, and to shop for a designer you’d like to work with, but please keep in mind that the work you are looking at was paid for by someone else. Our clients wouldn’t like us giving the milk away for free, if you catch my drift. Decorpad.com is another site I go to for inspiration. Again, you can put specific search words in and look for articles and/or photographs. This site works better with general search words, such as living rooms, headboards and master bedroom. I sometimes narrow this down with qualifiers such as modern bedroom or grey living room. There is a vast array of design blogs, at least one for your particular style, and probably more that you will discover and like. For modern, do-it-yourself and small spaces check out Dwell.com, Apartment Therapy and Design Milk. If you prefer something more traditional, perhaps with a French flair, check out Cote De Texas, Velvet & Linen and Tracery Interiors. courtneyoutloud.wordpress.com Courtney Out Loud and my own blog, www.meredithheron.com/blog Sashay. As a devotee of blue, I’m thrilled by this. Every project on our present roster is based on blue, so I’m a happy designer. We’re pairing it with magenta and deep blue purples into violets. Ikat is still all the rage as far as patterns go. Pattern, pattern, pattern; mixing and matching, layering, maximalist versus minimalism—we can’t get enough. In a single room, we routinely use at least 10 fabrics and patterns, and more if I can swing it. Brass and gold—yes it’s back. We have several projects about to be published nationally, including a kitchen that is pink and gold, where we used polished brass pot lights throughout. It’s stunning and not dated. Greys. They continue to be strong, but now we are seeing them in woods: hardwood floors and case goods alike. Cerused oak and bleached oaks are back, but greyed—no salmon pink washes this time around. If you want to try out a new trend, or you need help getting started on a new project, we’d love to help you make it a reality in 2013. Marty has been in the construction business since his teens when he worked with his family building custom homes and commercial developments. In 2006 he saw a need in Yorkton for custom design and millwork, a need that was rapidly expanding. Now, Marty infuses the lessons he has learned into all of his projects. He works hard to give his clients the custom work they need in a timely and professional manner. Marty expects this same dedication from his staff, who always gives 110 percent. “I believe it’s my staff—their professionalism, their hard work, and their dedication—that our customers

truly appreciate,” says Marty. SveinCo has a great group and each one of them has their own area of expertise. This focus and dedication is what ensures a great business and a great finished product. The crew at SveinCo will treat you with respect, and do what it takes to finish the job to your complete satisfation. What began as a custom cabinetry business has grown into a full construction company. Marty and his team can meet any custom construction need, from renovations, new home builds, and commercial work, while still offering the unique benefits of custom cabinets and detailed mill work for any space,

personal or commercial. “This is what sets us apart and why our customers build with us.” SveinCo ensures that every build is Energy Star approved and backed by their 10-year warranty program. By building your next home as an Energy Star home, you’ll not only shrink your environmental footprint, but you’ll shrink your heating bills too. Renovations, construction, and new builds can be a stressful undertaking, but SveinCo Developments works closely with clients to ensure each project finishes smoothly. At the beginning of each new home build, clients are provided with a comprehensive package detailing every step. Last minute decisions often result in regrets. You’ll have no regrets with SveinCo. Using this system, Marty and his customers are able to stay organized and are ready for upcoming stages of the build.

imberly has had a strong interest in Interior design throughout her life. In 2011, her dream became a reality with the official completion of her Interior Decorators Certification and the opening of Truly You Interiors. She specializes in the decor of your home—everything from building a home and deciding on what goes where, to renovating, to staging for selling, or simply giving new ideas and inspiration for her clients. When you call Kimberly to help with the decorating of your home or commercial space you get more than advice, you get personalized, professional, friendly service, with an honest approach and respect for your style and your ideas. “I want them to know that no matter what their project is, it’s important because they’re important. space to reflect who they are. I bring in my skills and a fresh set of eyes and want to leave knowing that my client feels like it is their space and expresses their uniqueness.” Kimberly grew up in a family of visionaries who taught her to look for the best way to approach a situation, discover options, and then move forward to use them. She has carried that ability into her interior decorating business. She can look at a space and see what “isn’t there” and then figure out how to get it to the point of completion. Kimberly likes to educate her clients throughout the process and explain to them as much as possible about what she is doing and how the elements of design work. She will teach them about colour psychology and how the language of colour can express itself in your home.

Different colors can make us feel certain ways and it’s important to think about this as you design your space. Meeting clients in their homes allows Kimberly to get a feel for their likes and dislikes, as well as their taste and style. This way every job becomes personalized and new. “Sometimes we as people don’t see what is right in front of us because we can’t envision our space looking any different than it has always been. We all need a helping hand or in this case, helping eyes. I hope that I can have the privilege of being the fresh set of eyes needed to kick-start your decorating plans.” FLP Truly You Interiors 306.621.9473 tyinteriors@gmail.com

ucked into a 103-year-old heritage house on Yorkton’s Smith Street, Welcome Home Floral & Gift Shop is proudly described as a “lifestyle store” by its owner, Kerry Geddes. “The business had been a craft store,” says Kerry. “Over the last fourteen years, we’ve evolved by adding gifts, home décor and accessories, as well as our massage therapy clinic.” “We also have a large selection of fresh cut flowers, uniquely designed arrangements and plants,” explains Kerry. Welcome Home believes strongly in offering a good quality, fresh product to their customers. They get their products

directly from the grower, meaning the plants and flowers have spent less time in transport before arriving at your home. Because of their commitment to you as well as their products, Welcome Home offers a guarantee on all their flowers, including roses. While Christmas is the shop’s busiest season, the store has plenty to offer all year-round. The store changes with every season, and it’s the place to be for special occasions like Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Easter and Mother’s Day. Welcome Home carries many wellknown gift and home décor lines, such as Fruits & Passion, Kameleon

Jewellery, Tag Giftware, Home Accents, and Gourmet Village. In addition to gifts and home décor, the shop is also a fullservice florist. As part of the Grower Direct Network, Welcome Home offers floral design for all occasions, and can personalize any arrangement with something from the gift shop. Kerry and her team can create anything from a small “thinking of you” arrangement, to a complete wedding floral package— everything from bouquets and corsages to boutonnieres and centrepieces. Their seven-day guarantee is for all their flowers, because they believe in the freshness and quality of the flowers they carry.

And, if you’re feeling a bit worn out from all the shopping, you can always get a massage from R & R Massage Therapy Clinic, which is housed on the premises. Kerry is also a registered massage therapist, and she and Dana Romasanta, another therapist, offer relaxation and therapeutic massages in two treatment rooms on the building’s main floor. “Our clients often enjoy browsing in the gift and flower shop before or after a treatment for a few moments of tranquility during a hectic day,” adds Kerry. The shop has become a bit of a destination. Customers travel from all around the Parkland region to visit Kerry’s store and clinic. “We see many of the same people all the time, so much so that they run into their friends and neighbours here and just start visiting,” says Kerry. “And, we see new faces all the time too.” Kerry and her staff

go out of their way to make all their customers feel welcome, and go the extra mile in customer service. “We get thank you cards and phone calls all the time, because our customers have been so happy with the flowers they have ordered or received from us. It makes us feel great knowing we’ve made someone so happy they have to let us know!”FLP Welcome Home Floral and Gift Shop 113 Smith Street East Yorkton, SK 306.786.7673

Full-Serve GaS in a SelF-Serve World Yorkton Co-op still believes in good, old-fashioned customer service By: Brook ThalgoTT Photos Carol gillis

ith two gas bars in Yorkton and one in Kamsack, Yorkton Co-op provides its customers a full-serve experience— something that’s getting harder and harder to find these days. Not only will the Co-op’s helpful attendants pump your gas, they’ll also check your oil and wash your windows—even in the dead of winter. They will also check your vehicle’s other fluids at your request.

In addition to pumping gas, Yorkton’s Coop Gas Bars also have car wash bays at both locations. The Broadway location

84

has one touch-less car wash bay, and the Palliser Way location boasts two touch-less bays, four wand wash bays, and even a dog wash bay. “You can wash your car and your dog with us,” says Bruce Thurston, manager. “We’ve installed a dog washing station, complete with sink, soap and dryer. It’s perfect for any size dog.” Customers who fill their tank at the gas bar get a discount on a car wash as well. The Co-op Gas Bars offer a full selection of beverages, including coffee, tea, cappuccino, slushies, and pop, not to mention snacks—sweet and salty. The

Palliser Way location also features a lottery kiosk, and even offers pizza. “We’ve got a Vern’s Pizza takeout right in our store. Fill your tank and grab a pizza for supper on your way home,” says Bruce. Both gas bars also fill propane tanks, the only retailer in town that does. “The thing that really sets us apart is our customer service,” says Bruce. “Our team makes the difference. They are terrific, and committed to providing excellent customer service.” Pump attendants have often gone above and beyond their duties. Not long ago, a customer drove in

for a tank of gas on a flat tire and didn’t realize it. “The pump attendant spotted it right away,” recalls Bruce. “They helped the customer change the tire immediately. “We also had a customer who drove over a curb next to our gas bar. She was pretty shaken up, so our staff brought her in, sat her down and offered her a coffee until she felt better.” Like every purchase made at the Yorkton Co-op, everything you buy at the gas bars also qualifies for cash back and equity. The Co-op paid out 8.5 percent on pump fuel in 2011, which works out to nearly ten cents per litre on gas in cash and equity. “With gas prices the way they are, ten cents a litre can really add up,” says Bruce. Yorkton Co-op Gas Bars are ready to serve you, open from 7am to 11pm, seven days a week. ith winter fast approaching, having a reliable, wellrunning vehicle becomes even more important. No one wants to turn the key on a cold and snowy day or night and hear nothing but a click. Keeping your car or truck in good condition can prevent expensive repairs in the worst time of year to get stuck without a vehicle.

Marty Sharp, owner of Sharp Automotive Repair Ltd. in Yorkton, believes the best approach to automotive care is to focus on long-term maintenance, rather than facing expensive and unexpected failures. Marty encourages everyone to prepare for winter driving season now. His shop offers a thirty point full inspection that covers oil and fluids, starting system, tires, brakes and

chassis, exterior lights, belts, blades, hoses, block heater and coolant. “We like to say: Be Wise and Winterize,” says Marty, who has 20 years of experience as an automotive service technician. “If you take good care of your vehicle, you’ll minimize the need for major repairs. We want to help customers avoid the big expenses that can pop up when a vehicle breaks down.” Sharp Automotive Repair Ltd., located on Myrtle Avenue just north of the SGI Claims Centre, works hard to provide quality auto maintenance and repair services for the Yorkton area. The shop is a full-service four bay NAPA AutoCare Centre and an SGI Inspection Station, offering a whole menu of minor and major automotive services on both foreign and domestic vehicles. Marty and his team, which includes Denise,

Terry, Levi and Denis, plus the shop dogs Brandy and Jade, make sure that their customers get exactly what they need every time they come in for a service. “We believe in providing honest, quality service. We won’t fix anything that doesn’t need a repair,” adds Marty. “We make sure our customers are happy with our work, and we appreciate all our loyal customers that come back to us every time they need their vehicle serviced or repaired.” Because Sharp Automotive is a NAPA AutoCare Centre, customers can rely on NAPA’s Peace of Mind Warranty. This written warranty is honoured at thousands of NAPA locations across Canada, not just at Sharp Automotive. No matter where you are, if you experience a problem with a covered repair, you can count on a NAPA AutoCare Centre being

nearby. The warranty is included free with qualifying repairs or service work, on both parts and labour for 12 months or 12,000 miles. “The thing we can’t emphasize enough is take care of your car. If we can help you do that, we can help you avoid nasty surprises this winter or any time of year,” says Marty. “Get your vehicle in good repair for winter, you won’t regret it.” For an appointment, call Marty and his team at 306.782.2396 and visit sharpauto. mechanicnet.com to check service specials. ince 1984, Harley-Davidson® of Yorkton has been the place for all things H-D®. As the Parkland’s single line genuine Harley-Davidson® dealership, Rick Dawson and his team are dedicated to ensuring every Harley-Davidson® brand lover gets what they need every time they come into the shop. “When we opened 28 years ago, Harley-Davidson motorcycles were the domain of your typical hardcore biker,” says Bill Hartridge, Operations Manager. “Thanks to the introduction of a new engine, and the rebirth of the company, Harley-Davidson has cultivated a lifestyle, not just a motorcycle.” For the first-time rider, getting on a Harley-Davidson® motorcycle shouldn’t be intimidating. Today’s Harley-Davidson® motorcycle riders are any age, and include a growing number of women, many of whom started out riding on the back of a motorcycle and graduated to their own set of wheels. “Harley-Davidson makes a motorcycle for every single rider,” says Bill. “My biggest piece of advice is this: pick the bike that spins your wheels. If you see a bike you love, get on it. We can build the bike around you.” And, if you are thinking about a used motorcycle, now is the time to start looking. The selling season for motorcycles is the opposite of the riding season. “As the riding season ends, riders are already planning for next year,” adds Bill. “So, people are selling their used motorcycle

Now’s the time to check out used motorcycles for the best selection.” Harley-Davidson® of Yorkton sells not only new and used motorcycles, but also travel accessories, motorcycle accessories, clothing and footwear, plus fashion clothing for kids, women, and men. “The brand Harley-Davidson appeals to so many people,” says Bill. “We have customers that love HarleyDavidson products and don’t even own a motorcycle. Harley-Davidson also sells everything from branded clothing to jukeboxes and pool tables.” The shop also features a parts and service department, with three of the best motorcycle mechanics in western Canada. “We know how important getting you back on your bike is,” says Bill. “We had an American touring rider come through here not long ago and his motorcycle broke down on his way to Alaska. Our service team picked him up, took parts off another bike, and worked late into the evening to get him back on the road as soon as possible. If you break down, we’re there to get you going again right away.” For everything H.O.G.®, Harley Owners Group®, whether you are new to the H-D® family or a dedicated fan from way back, visit Rick, Bill and the rest of the team at their 7th Avenue South location. They’re open from 8 am to 5 pm Monday to Friday, and 8.30 am to 4.30 pm Saturdays, with extended hours for December, Thursday and Friday nights until 9pm, and all Sundays before Christmas noon to 5pm.
