Hygge in the high country Embrace winter with the European art of coziness

H

By Connie Sutton

ygge, (pronounced hue-guh) is the key to surviving the cold temperatures in the high country. Though hygge originated in Denmark, it’s derived from the Norwegian word for “well-being” and is loosely translated to “coziness” But for Scandinavians, hygge is more than just creating a warm, inviting environment. It’s a way of life.

Hygge is about feeling cozy inside and out and letting that sense of contentment permeate everything else. Hygge is such an important part of being Danish that it’s considered a defining feature of their cultural identity, and credited as one of the reasons Denmark is at the top of the list of the world’s happiest countries. With dark, bleak winters, the Danes created hygge as a way to find little moments to celebrate. They perform simple rituals to break up the monotony and temper the harshness of living in a land that exists in near permafrost. With colder days ahead, the act of lighting a candle and enjoying the flame while at home

or in the office could make a greater impact on one’s spirit. Hygge is about establishing a sanctuary of comfort and warmth for you and your loved ones. It’s creating intimacy and a sense of togetherness, as well as deriving wealth and prosperity from friendship and solidarity. Hygge is turning off your phone and listening to the world around you, or taking time to pause and be grateful. It can be spiced wine by the fireside, wool socks and pet snuggles. Hygge is self-care with zero guilt. So, enjoy that book or a cup of rich hot cocoa on a snowy day. Ultimately hygge must be felt, not bought. Here in the high country, we don’t have what most would consider Nordic winters, but there will certainly be days that we consider harsh. Instead of complaining about the weather, light some candles, invite friends and family to your home to visit and take time for yourself. So when the snow is falling, crawl into your comfiest pajamas (aka hyggebuksers) light a fire, make some hot chocolate, and embrace the European art of coziness.

Hot, Hot, Hot! Hot Chocolate!

Warm Traditions

A

By Connie Sutton

cup of hot chocolate on a cold day will warm you to the core, but have you ever wondered about the origins of this delicious drink? The chocolate beverage we enjoy today is warm, rich and sweet, but it wasn’t always that way. Hot chocolate has seen empires rise and fall. It has traveled from king courts to the frontlines of war, and stirred up controversy with the Catholic Church – all while evolving from cold and spicy to warm and sweet. Long before it was sold in bar form chocolate was a beverage quite different from the drink we know today. The Mayans prepared what they called xocōlāt with cacao bean paste, chili peppers, cornmeal, vanilla and other spices. They poured it back and forth between two containers until it became frothy, dyed it red and served it cold. In the early 1500s, Spanish explorer Cortez returned home with xocōlāt for his king, changing the pronunciation to chocolatl. In Spain, the recipe was altered to remove the chilies, include sugar and be served warm. King Charles V’s court guarded this recipe as a privilege of the elite, so it was over a hundred years before it was introduced to the rest of Europe. In the 1600s, priests bickered over whether chocolate was a food or a drink, trying to determine whether it should be allowed during fasting. In the 1700s, a doctor named Hans Sloane returned from Jamaica with a recipe for mixing chocolate with milk and the familiar drink we know and love today was born. If you feel like imbibing a rich warm cup of the past, try whipping up this historically inspired hot chocolate for yourself. It’s a dash of sweet, a pinch of spicy and a whole cup of yum.

Ingredients 1 cup of water 3 Tablespoons of cocoa powder, plus more for serving 3 cups whole milk 4 ounces of dark chocolate, finely chopped 3 Tablespoons of sugar ⅛ teaspoon each cardamom, nutmeg, cinnamon & cloves ¼ teaspoon cayenne ½ teaspoon vanilla extract Lightly sweetened whipped cream (for serving)

Instructions Bring water to a simmer over medium-high heat. Stir in cocoa powder until smooth. Add chocolate, sugar, vanilla, and spices. Whisk continuously until chocolate is melted and the mixture is creamy. Add milk slowly, one cup at a time stirring constantly to combine. Divide into mugs. Top with whipped cream and dust with cocoa powder.

Gift-wrapping Give an aging tradition a fresh, modern twist

W

rapping gifts is an old tradition unconfined to a single holiday or occasion. In fact, wrapping items in a cloth was a popular way to transport personal things in ancient times. Because it was a clever way to disguise something before revealing it to a recipient, the art of wrapping gifts became commonplace. Our modern version of wrapping paper on rolls of cardboard in a variety of colors, characters, patterns and themes didn’t arrive until the 1900s. Since that time, gift wrapping has blossomed into a $3.2 million industry, according to Hallmark. After shopping, the costs of wrapping supplies can add up. But there’s truly no rules for wrapping presents! Consider these clever and cost effective solutions to concealing gifts for a surprising reveal.

tips & tricks

Paper Plain brown bags from local grocery stores provide a blank canvas for creative freedom. Tie a piece of twine around the package and top with a simple tag for a rustic look. Or use shapes and stamps to decorate with fun and festive designs. An old trail map or sheet music might appeal to your outdoorsman or musician. Even newspapers can make interesting packaging. Include a small bow or ribbon for a pop of color. With paper, the possibilities are endless.

Cloth

Furoshiki is the Japanese art of wrapping items in fabric. Fabric is durable, and therefore can be used by the recipient of the gift inside. If you wrap an item in a new bandana or nice scarf, you’re giving two gifts. Thicker fabrics are more difficult to manipulate, but it can be done. Try these different methods of folding and tying using thin linens, such as kitchen towels, clothing, pillow cases, sheets and blankets. And don’t be afraid to improvise! It’s a hassle to waste wrapping paper and time on large items; just make a Santa-style bag using a blanket and decorative ribbon or rope.

Containers

Everyday objects like cereal boxes and toilet paper rolls can be transformed into gift boxes. Simply save leftover containers and decorate with washi tape, festive stickers, ribbons and paper. Recycle glass jars from products like baby food and pickles by removing the labels, and decorate the container or wrap in cloth or tissue paper. Decorative tins, lunch boxes and reusable totes are useful for recipients as well. Before you go shopping this season, spend some time thinking about how you’re going to wrap your gifts. In short, use what you have available first and purchase only what you need. Explore using recycled materials and dual purpose packaging. Get started with the materials available at home, and source additional accessories locally from places like The Mail Room & Copy Center and Kroeger’s Ace Hardware. Most importantly, never underestimate the power of a present wrapped with a little personal flair.

Gift Wrapping

After shopping in downtown Durango, head to Strater Hotel for free gift wrapping from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays until Christmas. 14 • N O E L N IG HT 2 0 1 9

Project Merry Christmas Odd-shaped packages and plush objects are no match for the Project Merry Christmas volunteers. These volunteers will wrap your gifts with a smile at Durango Mall located at 800 S. Camino del Rio. This gift-wrapping station is the major fundraiser for the nonprofit organization that works to assist families suffering financial hardships during the holiday season. If the thought of wrapping gifts is too overwhelming for you, donate to Project Merry Christmas and let the volunteers take care of the presentation.

Party Planning

Preparing invitations for parties Information to include for holiday get-togethers

T

echnology has changed the process of preparing party invitations for the holiday season. Where we once worried about getting stamps and sending them out on time, evites have simplified the invitation process.

Hosts can still send invitations the oldfashioned way, but they can cut down on time spent preparing those invitations by using templates. Even as the way we exchange invitations changes, the information hosts need to include on the invites is the same. If it’s been awhile since you sent a holiday invitation, this guide to creating invites can ensure guests know all they need to know about your party.

l Degree of formality: Guests will want to know if the party is formal or casual, so let them know via the invitation. If no dress code information is included, guests will likely assume the affair is casual.

l Date and time: The date and time of the party should be clearly stated on the invitation. The holiday season is one of the busiest social seasons of the year, with family gatherings and office parties dotting December schedules. Leave nothing to the imagination on your invitation and clearly indicate the day of your party and what time it begins.

l Theme: Holiday parties sometimes have themes. So if you want everyone to dress up as a favorite holiday movie character or if you want to throw a Santathemed soiree, make sure to include such information on the invitation.

l Location: It might seem like a nobrainer, but don’t forget to include the location of the party on your invitation. Even if you annually host a holiday party at your home, include your full address so guests, especially new invitees, have something to enter into their GPS systems.

l Menu: If you plan to serve a meal, include information about the menu on the invitation and request that guests with specific food allergies inform you or bring their own food to the party.

l Accommodations: If you plan to serve alcohol, let guests know on the invitation and suggest arrangements for safe transportation home. Ridesharing apps have made it easier than ever to get home safely, but hosts should still keep the phone numbers of local taxi companies available for guests and make sure spare rooms are ready to accommodate attendees who get a little too festive.

Party Planning

he holiday season provides plenty of opportunities to socialize. Holiday celebrations are sometimes akin to family reunions, but friends also tend to celebrate together in December. These festive celebrations sometimes include different groups of people, and that may require hosts to do a little extra to make everyone comfortable, and enjoy their time at the party. Secret Santa gift exchanges can be a great icebreaker, even if guests are buying gifts for people they don’t know. If you plan to make Secret Santa part of your holiday party this year, consider these tips to ensure it goes smoothly.

l Start planning early. Hosts likely know everyone coming to their party, so they should take the lead and organize the Secret Santa exchange. Let guests know as early as possible, even including the information in the party invitations, so they have time to shop. l Make it optional. Forcing people to mingle and exchange gifts is never a good

idea. Give guests the option to participate ask them to indicate if they will or won’t when they RSVP. l Set a reasonable gift limit. Figure out a budget that works for everyone, and set a limit. There are plenty of gifts for $20 and under. Gift themes can also ensure no one goes overboard in terms of dollar value. l Consider a wish list. Asking

participants to fill out wish lists ensures that their Secret Santa buddy will have an idea where to start shopping. l Enlist a digital helper. Technology can make organizing Secret Santa exchanges even easier. Elfster is an online gift exchange app that can help hosts effectively organize their Secret Santa gift exchanges and parties.

Glittering Ornaments Turn old light bulbs into tree ornaments in three easy steps. First, decorate the bulbs to resemble holiday lights by painting the bulb or using adhesive to cover the bulb with glitter. Gifts that keep giving Gift Guide

E

xchanging gifts during the holiday season is a popular way to show your appreciation for others. When shopping for a gift for friends, family and coworkers, look for opportunities to enhance their day-to-day life with your gift. It could be a gift that provides entertainment or something to save them money over time. We compiled a brief list of gifts that keep giving to help you help your loved ones.

Growlers Beer isn’t the only treat that comes in growler. Though you can purchase growlers to refill at the local breweries, Cream Bean Berry also lets customers purchase a growler gift box, which includes a reusable glass jar and a free fill coupon. These glass growlers are a little larger than a pint, and gift recipients can choose up to four different flavors that are available in

the store. After the first free refill, the recipient can continue to bring the jar into Cream Bean Berry to fill for just $7. Now, that’s a sweet gift!

Memberships Support a local organization and give the gift of a membership. In Durango, there are a variety of businesses and nonprofit organizations that offer

exclusive memberships for customers. Gym memberships are some of the most popular, but garden lovers can benefit from discounts to more than eight regional garden centers and educational workshops by becoming a member of Durango Botanical Society. For art lovers, the Durango Arts Center has several benefits for their members, including discounts on purchases and reduced entry fees for artists. Some other great memberships for outdoor lovers include Durango Nordic Club and Hillcrest Golf Club. For the coffee lover or coworker, a Durango Joes Mug Club membership might do the trick. Do some research to find the right fit for your recipient.

Season Passes A season pass to Chapman Hill or Hesperus Ski Area is a great gift for people who love to ski and snowboard. Even if your snow enthusiast purchased a season pass to Purgatory Resort, odds are they could benefit from the ability to ski before the sun goes down on the weekdays until spring. A pass for adults costs $140, and a pass for children costs $100. Family passes cost $140 plus half per additional member. The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge also offers a season pass which allows passengers to access remote trails in the San Juan National Forest.

Share experiences Gift Ideas with family and friends I

f you are struggling to find the right item to give someone this season, it is time to consider an alternative approach to shopping. Dad doesn’t want another tie or pair of socks, and mom could use a vacation over a candle. Though shopping for a physical gift can be easier, giving an experience is a way to offer the people you love a thoughtful opportunity. There are many intangible gifts your friends and family might appreciate, especially if they are not required to spend money on the special experience. Check out this list of local experiences that will satisfy fun-loving people.

Dinner and a Show

A gifter can’t go wrong with culture and cuisine. Purchase a gift card to cover dinner for two at a local restaurant and two tickets to a movie, concert or theatrical performance. Choose from a variety of live entertainment venues in Durango, like Animas

City Theatre, Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis, Durango Arts Center or Henry Strater Theatre. Or purchase a gift card from Allen Theaters so they can choose what to watch. Maybe they will invite you to tag along!

a package at a resort or bed and breakfast is one way to relax and rejuvenate, instead of focusing on day-to-day worries and household chores. It’s also the perfect gift for family members who want to visit or friends you haven’t seen in a while. Escape to the natural hot springs and enjoy a massage at Durango Natural Hot Springs Resort and Spa. Revel in a full weekend of uninterrupted skiing at Purgatory Resort. Get some serious shopping done with a stay at Nobody’s Inn or Rochester Hotel, or slow down and get cozy at Antlers on the Creek or Blue Lake Ranch.

Lessons

Encourage loved ones to develop a new skill or hobby by gifting them a lesson of sorts. Children, teens and adults can all enjoy learning something new through a

hands-on experience. Active individuals might want to explore recreational activities like dancing, golfing, ice or rock climbing, skiing and skating. Artistic individuals might enjoy learning to play an instrument, craft pottery or speak a different language. These are just a few ideas of experience gifts, and there are still so many more. Purchase a gift card for local spa services, book an escape room at Conundrum Escape Rooms for you and your friends, invest in a festival pass, schedule a summer rafting trip, or buy tickets for a train excursion or special event at Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. Most of all, encourage gift recipients to explore and experience all that our community has to offer.

Giving Back

Offering more this holiday season

T

he holiday season is a time of giving. Though generosity is not limited to the holiday season, the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving Day is like an unofficial kick start to the giving season.

Since 2012, the first Tuesday following Thanksgiving has been known as “Giving Tuesday.” The event, started by the 92nd Street Y in New York City, the United Nations Foundation and the technology website Mashable, is a response to the commercialization of the holiday season and the rampant consumerism that begins before the last bite of turkey is completely digested. Today, Giving Tuesday harnesses the generosity of millions of people around the world and helps millions of dollars to find its way to the organizations that need it most. Giving Tuesday inspires people to volunteer or give back to causes that are near and dear to their hearts. Thanks to technology, giving has the capacity to go viral and inspire others to engage in charitable efforts. Since its inception, Giving Tuesday has evolved. The event now underscores how communities can harness the power of people working together to elicit greater change.

difference in your community. Here are some easy ways to provide some extra cheer for someone this year. l Pay it forward by treating someone to coffee, lunch, or whatever else suits you at the time. Perhaps he or she will do the same for someone else and keep the generosity going. l Keep change and extra dollar bills in your pocket and be generous to charities seeking donations outside of stores. A cup of coffee or hot chocolate goes a long way toward warming up the people manning the collection pots as well. l Adopt a family who is less fortunate and purchase some gifts on their wish list. Project Merry Christmas is just one organization that can connect you with families struggling financially to provide Christmas for their children. Check with area churches, too.

Even though Giving Tuesday may be the catalyst for charitable efforts, it doesn’t need to end there. Small acts of generosity throughout the season can make a big

radition reigns supreme for many people during the holidays. Exchanging gifts is one tradition that transcends religion, as people who subscribe to various faiths exchange gifts with their loved ones during the season. When making their holiday shopping lists, don’t forget the people who help you throughout the year. Here are some gift ideas that can help the people who help us throughout the year.

to a salon supply wholesaler can make for a welcome gift. For those who want to pamper the people who pamper them, a gift certificate to a local spa or restaurant can make for a wonderful gift.

Mailman

Educators and Caregivers

Mail carriers spend much of their workday braving the elements, so a gift that helps make their time outdoors more comfortable is ideal. But shoppers should know there are rules governing gifts that the workers can and cannot accept. According to the United States Postal Service, employees can accept gifts worth $20 or less from a customer per occasion. However, carriers are forbidden from accepting cash and cash equivalents. In addition, mailmen cannot accept more than $50 worth of gifts in

a calendar year. Consider gifting mail carriers a comfortable, moisture-wicking shirt to wear under uniforms. A basket of chapstick, sunscreen and some healthy snacks that can be eaten on-the-go are also great gifts for mail carriers.

Hairdressers Hairdressers go to great lengths to make us look and feel our best all year, and those efforts should not be forgotten during the holiday season. Many use supplies, such as capes, hairspray and scissors, which they purchase on their own. A gift certificate

Educators and caregivers, which includes teachers, babysitters and daycare staff, do a lot for children. Their efforts should be recognized during the holiday season. School systems and daycare facilities may have rules in place governing which items staff can accept, so inquire about such policies in advance. When gifting babysitters, make sure gifts are ageappropriate. If a babysitter is a minor, cash may be the best gift. For teachers and daycare workers, consider a gift certificates to a local supplies store.
