Using statistics from nominations and voting, the committee that manages Best Of Durango & La Plata County audits each category annually before the contest kicks off. Can I nominate a business?
To keep the contest balanced and fair for all participating businesses and services, a user must establish a profile with a valid email address. The ability to submit a vote is linked to the individual profile with a third party system that tracks submitted votes and prevents users from voting more than once in a single category. It also lets users provide some information about why they voted for a specific business. Cool!

Are advertisers secretly running the show?
The results are never weighted. In fact, the third party system helps keep the contest fair for all participants, and catches those cheaters trying to stuff the virtual ballot box. Local businesses often campaign for nominations and votes through advertisements during the contest, but these advertisers and sponsors do not affect the outcome in any way. But, they do make the contest financially feasible.
During the nomination round, we accept write-in selections from the public. The top six businesses that receive the most nominations progress to the voting round. On occasion, there are more than six options on the ballot due to ties for writein nominees. Simply create a profile to submit your own nominations or votes.

Who chooses the winners? The power is in the hands of the people. And though some visitors participate in the fun, individuals who live and work in Durango and La Plata County are primarily responsible for the results of the contest.
