Our show beneficiary this year is La Plata County Humane Society – you’ll see some of their adoptable dogs walking through the show, and more adorable puppies and kittens at their booth in the large parking lot. Also in the lot is Big Brothers/Big Sisters with their 2016 Homes with Heart Playhouse raffle, and vendors showing RV’s, farm equipment, landscaping, outdoor home improvements, cleaning, steel buildings, and more.

Joe Toledo

The artist stands amidst the cluttered energy of his studio, his fingers dipped in a container of water. “It is rainwater. Soft. It is what I use.”

Joe Toledo knows how rainwater flows on paper. When he applies color to wet paper, form begins and the flow becomes transparent. Toledo mixes rainwater with color (he never uses black or white) and the paper becomes vibrant... yet peaceful.

Toledo says the paper is like a friend and companion. “It communicates to me. I must treat it with care, as I would treat someone special.” Together, artist and paper find the suggestions... the purity of expression... that will become the painting.

Toledo has chosen watercolor “because it is spontaneous and unpredictable.” So, too, the artist and the man.

A native of the Jemez Pueblo in New Mexico, Toledo paints what is solace for him. ... Reflections of the ritual of his Pueblo culture (the quiet power of the Eagle feather). ... Pastoral realism (the passing harmony of a weathered barn of equally weathered land).

Toledo received his Bachelor’s degree from Southwestern College in Kansas and his Master’s from the University of Northern Colorado. But there is no struggle of study in his work. The images of his eye become thoughts on paper placed there with the extraordinary and sensitive ease which is unique to his brush.

Joe Toledo’s absorption with life and painting is as rich as the sun which pours down on the Southwestern Colorado landscape that is his home. It is what makes his works treasures in private and corporate collections in the United States, Canada, and Europe. fourcornersexpos.com

Solon is a self-taught musician, who plays saxophone, clarinet, flute, harmonica, and piano. He is immersed in the music of jazz as a soloist, composer, arranger, bandleader, and teacher. He began his professional musical adventure as a street performer, playing his way through Central and SouthAmerica and has performed throughout the southwest since 1985, with his duets, groups, and 8 piece swing band.

He has led three tours for the U.S. Embassy in Latin America, produced and released 15 recordings, and teaches jazz studies at Fort Lewis College.

| Event Beneficiary The La Plata County Humane Society is a nonprofit organization created to enhance the quality of life in our community by encouraging the humane treatment of animals.

Our philosophy is to preserve the lives of the animals entrusted to us.

Sandwiches The Humane Society was created to provide shelter for homeless animals, to rescue animals in distress, to assist in the investigation and prosecution of reported cruelty and abuse, to attempt to find homes for unwanted animals, and to encourage kindness and responsibility toward all living things through humane education.

The La Plata County Humane Society was established as a 501(c) 3 animal shelter in 1973. The Thrift Store was established in 1990 to raise monies for the new facility. The Shelter is directed by nine elected board members. The Humane Society has a capacity to house over 50 dogs and 40 cats. In 2000, we added a veterinarian to staff to insure that all animals are spayed or neutered and have all veterinarian care/needs before leaving our facility.

| Big Brothers Big Sisters Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Colorado is kicking off this year’s Homes with Heart playhouse raffle at the Durango Home and Ranch Show. You will be able to check out the playhouse, deDesigned by Mia Irwin signed and built by Durango High School students. Raffle tickets are $5 per ticket for 5 tickets for $20. The drawing will be held at 4:30 pm at the July 4th celebration downtown Durango at Buckley Park. The winner of the playhouse will receive complimentary delivery service within 25 miles of the city limits (truck and trailer access will be needed).
