Unfortunately, these green beers are only being offered in Nevada, Arizona, and California. BUT the rest of us will be able to grab alien-themed merch like hats, jackets, and koozies on the company’s website. Heck. You can even get your own flag for when you’re off to storm the Area 51. Davenport told the newspaper that after receiving 350,000 calls over his 25-year career, he believes Brinkley and Lucero were telling the truth.

The two men, who really just want to hunt elk, however, know that to some people they’re going to come across as crazy.

“I just know it was real,” Brinkley said.

Durango just got a little greener: Say hello to

The Green House

There’s a new sheriff in town. Well, not exactly, but there is a new dispensary. The Green House has been around for a hot minute in Pagosa Springs, and they’re spreading their green wings and opening up shop in Durango. You can find The Green House at 730 S. Camino Del Rio, just a few parking spaces away from Durango Harley-Davidson and The Rusty Shovel Saloon.

The Durango shop, like their Pagosa locations, is filled with a wide array of products. So, when you inevitably swing by for a visit, you should ask them about their penny joints. The Durango dispensary is having their official welcome-to-Durango party from 2-9 p.m. on October 5, and they’re going to have everything from food trucks to live music and giveaways.

Botanicals. We’re trying really hard to focus on local growers. We bring some of our own flower from Pagosa, as well as another grower we work with in Ignacio. We work with growers all over Colorado, but primarily we have local flower. That’s really what we want to showcase. We have some really cool local growers. Durango Cannabis Company is a really good company. We got in on Lava Lamp’s second harvest. We’ve been part of the community for a long time.

People divide Pagosa and Durango, and we don’t want to have that division here. We want to be part of those communities.

What kind of work went into turning this space from an office to a dispensary?

Dwayne: We did a reasonable amount of work. After we took out the cubicle spaces, we poured a new epoxy floor and built these custom cases. There was quite a bit of work that went into it.

We sat down with Dwayne Baird, the shop’s marketing director, to learn more about why the business came to Durango and what we can expect when visiting the new shop.

Tell us about the grand opening party.

You guys have two dispensaries in Pagosa Springs. What made you decide to spread out to Durango?

Dwayne: The owners have been trying to come to Durango for a long time.

They’ve had lot of opportunities, but they’ve been waiting for the right location.

There’s something like 15,000 cars a day that drive by here on Camino Del Rio. We have good visibility.

What makes The Green Room unique to Durango?

Dwayne: We want to focus in on that we have something for everybody. We have a wide selection. We wanted to make sure there’s a lot of variety. We have lots of concentrates. We have lots of edibles. We have lots of pipes. We’re high end, but we have something for everyone. We have $5 grams but we also have $20 grams.

This event is not just to let everyone know that we’re here, but it’s about product education. While it’s nice to focus on one or two vendors, we carry a wide variety.

Our bud tenders are really well trained. It’s really nice to hear right from the sales reps, the guys that are making these products.

Not only are we going to have product reps here, but we’re going to have grower reps as well. I have Lava Lamps coming out. I think Durango Cannabis Company is coming out, and our own grower might be coming out from Pagosa. We’re trying to showcase all the product, have representation, and we’re trying to do education.

When my wife – who at the time was my girlfriend – first brought me to Durango to visit our future home, our first brewery stop was at Durango Brewing Company (Editor’s note: RIP). We went to Ska the next day, and the new Animas Brewing Company the day after that.

I would eventually end up frequenting Carvers and Steamworks after we moved, not to mention a few pints at Brew. And, of course, I had to visit the breweries in Mancos, Pagosa, Ouray, Silverton, and all the other surrounding towns.

It seems you can’t have a town in Colorado without a brewery or two. Heck, it’s probably true for the whole country now since the (American) Brewers Association states that, “In 2018, small and independent brewers collectively produced 25.9 million barrels and realized 4 percent total growth, increasing craft’s overall beer market share by volume to 13.2 percent.” Colorado hasn’t been about just Coors for decades now, and due to the Great American Beer Fest and Oskar Blues spearheading the craft beer in a can movement, Colorado has been the home base of craft brewing

for quite some time now. In addition, Durango has been a part of this national growth with Ska’s contribution to the market since the late ’90s.

If you are new to town, or just trying to get a handle on the options for craft beer, here is my introductory guide to who is currently serving in La Plata County. Remember, if this is your first foray into Colorado beer, we love our hops and IPAs, and rarely make a consistent Czech or German-style pilsner, nor a smooth finish pale ale. All breweries have food options, and some draw more for their menu than beer, so it’s good to know that a non-beer-drinker can still find epicurean delights while drinking fizzy water. However, you should know that Ska is the only option for a beer garden with picnic tables.

The newest brewery in town, Chainless Brewing, has moved into the old Durango Brewing Company on North Main. The space has not changed since the transition, other than some cycling-related decor, but it doesn’t really need it, as the DBC folks pimped out the patio prior to selling out. Chainless is

[drink] all about the beer, with a dozen flowing taps and no other alcoholic options aside from beer cocktails. Unless you are at the bar though, it works as a traditional restaurant with table service.

Chainless Brewery’s menu has bicycle-themed bar food with price tags that are about average for our town, and everything tastes great. The traditional wings, burgers, and sandwiches are all worth it, especially during the lunch specials. As a parent who occasionally brings his kid to the brewery, there was nothing for her to do here except stare at the many TV screens. As a result, my weekly visits here are for adult time and often just for beer drinking, but I don’t mind, as they have the most beers agreeable to my palate than any other spot in town.

Get your fill of “Tucker & Dale vs. Evil” at the Telluride Horror Show will host a conversation with Link as well as a public reading and book signing.

Before we get started, we all need to agree on something: Halloween is the best holiday of them all. Period. Know why? Not only do you get dress up as anything from a sexy nurse to Snorlax, but we get to have events like the Telluride Horror Show.

Once referred to as a “smörgåsbord of horror goodness” by Bloody Disgusting, this festival is the top dog of all things horror film. And if you have even an inkling of interest in the horror genre, you best be getting your tickets to this year’s event, which runs October 11 to 13.

This gore and horror-filled event is Colorado’s first and longest-running horror film festival. In fact, this year is its 10th anniversary. Each year, attendees can expect the latest and greatest of the horror film genre from filmmakers around the world. For a solid three days, horror fans can immerse themselves in “an eclectic mix of horror, suspense, thriller, dark fantasy, sci-fi and dark comedy,” according to the event’s website.

Many of the films will be showing for the first time in the U.S.

which always sells out. They are the only true-to-form brew pub in town with no table service. They do offer tours and canned beer to take home, not just growlers or crowlers like the other four.

The inside has two stories, the upper often used for meetings or yoga, and the outside is great for kids and dogs.

Ska’s beer menu includes 10 flagship pours, which are also canned and sold in stores, and typically about four or five other experimental or seasonals. The beer is quite hit or miss with my palate. I normally prefer the experimental or seasonal beers to the most popular ones. Even though Ska is my top choice when bringing the family, there are many regulars who like to go and just drink beer, too, even if they are as annoyed as a Yelp reviewer who thought the kids ruined the experience for him.

Ska Brewery might not be the oldest brewery in town, but they have the biggest name outside of the area. I remember seeing Pinstripe and True Blonde in Austin before I moved here, but I never liked these beers enough to buy them in stores. I love going to the scenic, well-appointed, wind- and solar-powered brewery up at the southeast top of Bodo Park. There might be a tiny stage at Chainless, but Ska really tries to push their music weekly at the Thursday Ska-B-Q and the annual birthday bash –

woman in the film based on a true story Based on the marketing for Annapurna Pictures’ most recent feature, “Hustlers,” one would think this is just another raunchy slapstick comedy along the lines of “Bridesmaids” (2011) or “Rough Night” (2017). Not that there’s anything wrong with those kinds of films. After all, “Bridesmaids” did indeed manage to nab a couple of Oscar nominations.

And, ever since the “Hustlers” premiere at the Toronto Film Festival earlier this month, there’s been a surprising amount of Oscar hype around the film, particularly in regard to Jennifer Lopez. As someone who has only ever really been impressed with the pop star’s acting in “Selena” (1997) and “Out of Sight” (1998), I was shocked. But as someone who also loves when comedies get award nominations, I kept an open mind, and it turns out Lorene Scafaria’s new film actually has a lot going for it.

In 2007 New York City, Destiny (Constance Wu) is making ends meet by working as a dancer at the city’s most popular strip club. She doesn’t just need the money for bills and groceries, but also for her grandmother, who lives with her. When veteran stripper Ramona (Lopez) suggests they form a small group of their closest colleagues from the club to steal from wealthy men after the downturn of their business from the 2008 housing market crash, things get a little too deep, at least legally speaking.

Julia Stiles works the role of a journalist reporting on the strip clique, while Keke Palmer, Lili Reinhart, and Madeline Brewer co-star as fellow strippers. “Hustlers” is loosely based on the 2015 article in New York Magazine, “Hustlers at Scores,” by Jessica Pressler.

The movie is what “Coyote Ugly” (2000) would have been if the producers had embraced an R rating and gotten rid of the love subplot. The tone isn’t comedic, though there is a decent amount of comic relief, and the characters are successfully crafted to be both relatable and endearing. Though it does feel like a weak start to Oscar season ahead, Lopez’s consideration isn’t filler, and she holds her own throughout the two hour picture. She also reminds us that she can be taken seriously when in the right role, and that she’s not just an appropriate choice for romcoms.

Wu is also solid in her role, and exhibits a range that covers both comedy and drama, though she is unfortunately working with some seriously unflattering short bangs as part of her character.

It’s interesting to see how differently both women, Ramona and Destiny, respond to being in a controversial line of work while being single mothers, and it helps us understand where each is coming from.

The most impressive aspect of “Hustlers” is Scafaria’s script and direction, which are a huge improvement from her previous movies, “Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist” (2008) and “Seeking a Friend for the End of the World” (2012), both of which were arguably regressive in their portrayals of young women. This time, though, Scafaria shows a smooth, mature side of storytelling.

Though not exactly a good fit for a date night movie, “Hustlers” would be a good call for a night out with a group of friends or a night out alone.

he Craft Brewing Conference is the only place Jess Griego visits where there isn’t a line for the women’s bathroom. When the co-owner of Bosque Brewing Co. sees the men’s bathroom just across the way, there’s always a long line.

While not having to wait in line to use the bathroom is certainly a victory, the difference in restroom line length is indicative to Griego of how craft brewing is a male dominated industry. It’s also proof that there’s quite a bit more work to do to bring women into the brewing industry.

“I don’t think you can make a good beer without attention to detail,” she said. “If you try to rush through anything in the beer industry you’re going to get a bad product. It’s important to really love what you’re doing and love hard work.

There’s a lot of trial and error. It’s really a work of art.”

“Women brewing is a large minority,” she said. “I have seen a lot more women in owner and leadership roles, which has been great, but I think there’s still a lot of work to be done with women working in brewing. ... I think it’s definitely becoming less common (to not see women working in the industry). I hope that more women can see themselves in these roles.”

There are certain beers McKnight is most proud of. At the last brewery she worked at, she made a honey chamomile wheat that won gold at World Beer Cup and a silver medal at GABF. At Toltec, people love her wheat beers and the blue agave nectar beer, but her pride and joy are her lagers – specifically her rye lager.

“There are a few of us (women working in the craft beer industry). We’re not completely outnumbered but there are a few. Head brewers not so much. But I’ve been seeing more women in lab programs,” McKnight said.

A self-proclaimed sucker for lagers, McKnight believes you can’t make a good beer unless you pay attention to the little things.

“It’s crisp and doesn’t have that overwhelming rye flavor,” she said.

According to the Brewers Association, more than 30 percent of beer drinkers are women. Data suggests that from 2015 to 2018, craft beer skyrocketed in popularity and added 14.7 million drinkers to the mix – with 6.6 million of those being women. In fact, in some markets, the ratio of women sipping suds is greater than the number of men. In Portland, Oregon, the craft drinker breakdown is 52.7 percent female and 47.3 percent male.

The pseudo scientific expert takeaway here is that women like drinking beer, and they like making it, too. In fact, many of them are going to be serving glasses of their top-shelf beers from Oct. 3 through 5 at the Great American Beer Fest in Denver.

There’s an entire army of women out there making waves in the craft beer industry, and organizations like Pink Boots Society, an international nonprofit supporting women in the beer industry, are there to make sure it happens.

Let’s meet a few of the women who are leading the hops charge in Colorado and New Mexico.

Despite her extensive knowledge and experience, Meyerhofer, the bar manager and event coordinator at WildEdge Brewing Collective in Cortez, has found that at beer-focused social events like festivals she must exert herself more than her male cohorts in order to be taken seriously.

“It felt like we went years back in time.

I had to put on a different pair of pants and was like, ‘No, I’m going to own this experience. I had a part in this. I can talk about it,” Meyerhofer said.

To get to where she is now, Meyerhofer studied the craft of brewing relentlessly.

“You want to get the nuances right.

You want to get the verbiage right. Especially as a female, there’s less wiggle room on that. You have to be able to drag your point home with the correct language to be heard. So just making sure I was succinct and knowledgeable and then finding the confidence to go out to these festivals or be in the taproom, because we’re doing something that Cortez has never seen. There’s a lot of education that happens with our patrons,” she said.

Griego never intended to work in the beer industry long term. It was 2012 and she had graduated college intending to go to law school. She worked for an attorney and quickly decided that the profession wasn’t for her.

“I was at a loss. I didn’t want to stay in the position I was in,” she said. “I’d been bartending and I figured I could go back to serving temporarily until I figured out what I wanted to do. I didn’t want to be in a bar scene and the craft beer scene was becoming more popular in New Mexico. I decided finding a job in a brewery would be a good fit.”

As far as good beer goes, Meyerhofer said a good beer experience is dependent on how it makes her feel.

She asked a friend to get her a job at Bosque Brewery – a career move that was supposed to be temporary. She never left, and eventually became one of the owners.

“I feel like what makes a good beer is how it reacts in your body,” she said.

“That it’s clean. That it’s well brewed. ... Something that excites my palette.

Something that is unique.”

She held up a glass of Barrel 17, a WildEdge-brewed red base beer fermented with second-use raspberries in French oak cask for nine months.

“Like this beer that we’re drinking.

I feel like as we’re gaining a couple degrees in temperature it’s evolving and exploring that evolution. ... You’re starting to branch into the unique qualities of the beer that are exciting,” she said.

Victoria Martinez Director of Culinary Arts and Hospitality and Tourism programs at Central New Mexico Community College – Albuquerque, NM Victoria Martinez isn’t a brewer, but she is a visionary who is leading the charge in creating a larger workforce in New Mexico’s craft brewing industry.

As the director of culinary arts and hospitality and tourism at Central New Mexico Community College in Albuquerque, Martinez played a key role in developing the university’s new Brewing and Beverage Management program.

“It was a conversation we had with New Mexico Brewers Guild,” Martinez said. “We were looking at expanding our programs and we noticed the craft brewing industry in New Mexico was growing. The brewing guild came to us and said, ‘We need a labor force. We need folks with boots on the ground.’”

Martinez worked with the Brewers Guild to develop a program and Brewing and Beverage Management was born in 2016.

The program has since been lauded as one of the best in the country. Not only was CNM named the No. 2 brewing

As someone on the education side of the brewing industry, Martinez sees the challenges of bringing women into the industry. Still, she also sees a lot of hope.

The brewing education staff at CNM are a 50/50 mix of men and women. Martinez also joined the New Mexico chapter of the Pink Boots Society to get involved with more women in the beer industry.

For her, picking a favorite beer is, well, complicated.

“I think it depends on the season and depends on my mood. I love multi-goodness. I’m not super excited about hops, but I like tasting all kinds of different beers. I enjoy the sours and I enjoy those malty, creamy beers. It’s like picking a favorite child.”

Shelly Cox Chief operating officer of Riff Raff Brewing – Pagosa Springs, CO Riff Raff Brewing Co. isn’t just renowned for its delicious, green chile beer. When the Pagosa Springs brewery opened six years ago, the owners took the unusual step of using geothermal water from the local hot springs to heat the building and brewhouse. In fact, it’s one of just two breweries in the country that does this.

run the Pagosa beer staple, and founded the company when they felt it was time for a career change.

“My husband and I had been living in Pagosa for about five years, and he was home brewing and had a software company. He was getting really bored with the software company and I was getting tired of listening to him. I asked him, ‘What are you wanting to do?’ And he said, ‘I think I’m wanting to start a brewery,’” Cox said.

If you ask Griego what she thinks makes a good beer, she’ll tell you it’s all about the experience.

“I think a good beer is the experience beyond the beverage. You can have a world-class beer in front of you, but if it’s served in a dirty glass or the server takes a long time to get to you, it can impact your experience. There’s so much work brewers do to create a great beer, but it has to be held up by a great experience surrounding it. All those little things add up,” Griego said.

Some of her favorite beers have been during “shifties,” aka crazy day beers.

From there, Riff Raff Brewing was born and in 2018, Riff Raff on the Rio, the brewery’s second location.

“My favorite beers are always the beers we have together after opening tap rooms – after we’ve been in the trenches with staff and co-owners,” she said.

For Shelly, good beer should be accompanied by a good time in an accepting environment, which is very much the theme of Riff Raff.

When she does have a bad beer experience (yes, there is such a thing), she takes what she learned and brings it back to Bosque.

“The beer itself and the atmosphere you drink it in – one of our biggest things here is we want to make it “Cheers” for everyone, whether you’re coming in for the first time or you come in every day. I think we brew and produce solid beer, but if you’re drinking it with a friend, maybe a friend you just met five minutes ago, it makes everything taste better,” she said.

» It’s time to harvest homegrown marijuana The harvest moon has passed and the autumn freeze is coming. The window has arrived for me to harvest my first homegrown crop of marijuana. I am super excited and I love the scent of the skunky flower. After a lifetime of buying pot – and occasionally getting blessed with gifts – I will finally have my own free pot to smoke.

One of the coolest things for a Colorado weed smoker like myself, other than finally being on the right side of the law, is how many people are growing their own. Like me, many of these growers have little to zero experience in gardening. We learn how to grow in a childlike sense: conflicting advice from each other and a slow trial and error process.

The harvest process I am going through now is only my experience. I picked the advice from others that fits my levels of effort, time, and money.

This is not an expert advice column.

This is just my struggle to not ruin the lovely housewarming gifts that I have been tending to since June. Yes, housewarming gifts; I really love the people of Durango.

Do you know the word trichomes?

Microsoft Word didn’t, and neither did I, even after having marijuana in my life for over 30 years. I was told to look at the trichomes, to determine the best time to harvest, with a magnifying glass.

Then, most people told me harvest time is when they are all milky, but some said all amber. Others had an idea of what percentages of each was best.

Well, I got a magnifying glass with a little light and went outside to my green babies. Incorrectly, I looked at the sap-like crystals, and not the hairs.

Apparently the sap stays milky and I was supposed to be looking at the partially amber hairs. Did you know that the trichomes are the hairs? Weed smoking is getting so scientific for me.

I end up harvesting the plants with about half amber, half milky trichomes in appearance. I am told that the difference at this point comes in THC potency and flavor. However, I think the former is under a percentage point or so of THC, and the variation in the latter Continued on Page 19

I first dragged the big pots into the garage to dry out – the rains came that week. I was under the impression the plants can dry out a bit, preferably in the dark, before getting cut. After a week of snuggling in the garage, awaiting their transition to a more meaningful life, I cut those babies down with big garden chompers. The one tip everyone agreed on was to harvest in the dark, preferably before the sun comes up.

You’ll need a nice little pair of trimmers and alcohol with rags to keep them clean. I had some old screens in the shed I used to put out as a work station so I could capture all the shake for future experiments with the dregs. It could be like making grappa for weed.

Luckily, we still had some of the big ones from another herb project. After all the weed was sealed, I placed them in a dark closet. This is the curing part and there are many ways to do it. I heard the medium-sized home harvesters prefer black trash bags.

After spending about eight hours trimming my maximum legal amount, I was in a state of redundant bliss. Even though this old pot smoker wore gloves for the big event, the heaps of THC was more than I had handled in a while, and if there is a possibility of getting a contact high, I might have achieved it. Normally, it would just be the weed I smoked, but I took some time off smoking so as to get the full effect of my new batch.

Over the next three weeks – yes, I have to wait three more weeks after being so close to all those crispy looking buds – I will open those jars every two or three days and move them around to get the moist air out and fight the possibility of mold again.

After I had the piles of buds – I still have a hard time calling it flower all the time – they went into as many mason jars as I could find around the house.

That third week is coming up soon – very soon. I will finally get to enjoy the fruits of my labor. All those months of watering, giving nutrients, and pruning will hopefully pay off. This weed might not have been exactly free, but it is legal and it is mine.

I can only speak for the Colorado market. In places like California that have a HUGE number of illegal dispensaries (so many, in fact, that illegal stores vastly outweigh the amount of legal dispensaries), I personally wouldn’t want to buy any cartridges from a new/unregulated market like California.

So, if you’re being smart and asking the right questions at your legal dispensary – is it state tested; is there a thinning agent used; is it flavored? – you shouldn’t have any issues.”

Now that that’s out of the way, let’s talk about the Craft Panacea Banana Kush vape cartridge we’re reviewing this week, shall we?

So, we picked up this cart from Prohibition late last week at basically the height of the vapes-will-off-you hype. I personally love vapes because I’m lazy and they’re so user friendly, but this one, which was filled with golden indica concentrate goodness, gave me a bit of trouble right off the bat. (This is going somewhere, I swear.) I screwed it into the battery I had laying around at home and went to imbibe. First inhale? Nothing. Second inhale? Nothing.

Switched batteries, and you guessed it: nothing. It wasn’t working. Not a huge deal; sometimes that happens with this type of thing, in part because of the viscous nature of concentrates.

Things get a little mucked up.

I messed with the cart a while longer but to no avail, so I decided to run back up to Prohibition, as a clogged cartridge was going to do, well, nothing for this review. They swapped it out with the quickness, and off I went.

I’d taken the battery with me to make sure the new cartridge worked before I left (don’t worry; I wasn’t driving) so I quickly screwed the new cart in and tried it out. And ... nothing. Gave it a few more clicks of the button ... nothing. This went on for a few more tries, and before I gave in and took it back, I decided to try it one last time.

All of a sudden, I had a huge lungful (or

two) of vapor and I was choking like a damn fool.

Turns out you should probably let this thing warm up for a few seconds before you decide it’s broken, cause, uh ... this Craft cartridge worked just fine. Maybe even more than fine. The hit I took was huge, and every hit after emitted clouds that floated up to the heavens. And yes, I sputtered and choked every time.

Just those huge couple of hits knocked me into outer space, and I was almost immediately giggle-bish stoned like I was back in high school.

Everything was funny to me, up to and including the fact that the person who drove me to Prohibition lost their wallet somewhere in the depths of their car. By the time we pulled into the driveway, I was wreckt with a t – in such a very good way. My face felt like it was melting the hell off, my body high was epic, and I couldn’t stop laughing. I felt like the giggles lasted for hours, all while I was standing outside of my house.

Once I finally pulled myself together enough to go through the front door, I threw myself in front of some weird Netflix documentary and ate a bunch of pizza rolls like a G before passing the hell out and sleeping like a rock.

(Please don’t be envious of my life. You too can have this productive ass path if you just smoke enough and eat enough carbs.)

I already liked the Banana Kush strain, and I especially liked it in this Craft Panacea vape cartridge. Was there a learning curve? Yes, but only because I’m dumb. Should I be careful of what I put into my body? Yes, but that doesn’t just go for vape cartridges. It also goes for beer, sugary stuff, and the massive amount of pizza rolls I ingested last week. Anything can wreak havoc on your body if you overindulge.

Here’s my (very unscientific) advice: Everything in moderation, and don’t be silly about your choices. If you wouldn’t buy pizza rolls some dude has hidden under his trench coat on the corner, don’t buy vape cartridges from that dude, either. Make sure you’re buying regulated products from a quality dispensary, and make sure you’re buying something as fun as these Banana Kush cartridges, and you should be all right indeed.

FYI: You’re probably using condoms incorrectly

The steps to using a condom correctly is one of my favorite pieces of information to share, partially because folks seem to be surprised when I list off more steps than they were expecting. Also, it is fundamental information to protect against STIs (sexually transmitted infections) and/or pregnancy. Condoms are one of the most accessible forms of protection available – cheap or free, no ID required to buy them, no doctor’s visit necessary, and they can be found in bathrooms, pharmacies, grocery stores, clinics, sex shops ... so many more places than dental dams, female condoms, even latex gloves, and hormonal or non-hormonal birth control!

Steps to Using a Condom Correctly Check the box and condom wrapper for the expiration date and for a lot number. Expired condoms are more likely to break. A lot number proves that the condoms were part of a batch that was tested, as opposed to condoms that are sold as gag gifts or jokes that are not meant to be used as protection – more likely to be found in specialty stores or bathrooms.

Gently squeeze the condom wrapper between your fingers to check for an air bubble. If the wrapper is flat or deflated it may have a hole in it, meaning the condom could be damaged as well.

Store your condoms in a safe, temperature regulated space – avoid extreme temperatures and physical abuse. One night in your wallet probably isn’t going to do much damage, but try your pocket instead. The rest of the box would love to be in a nightstand drawer rather than the glove box of your car.

Opening the package gently with your fingers is key. Avoid using your teeth, knives, and if you are sporting long fingernails, be especially careful.

Condoms are tough but fragile when mishandled. If you have lube or other slippery substances on your fingers, opening a condom packet can be especially frustrating, and of course, there is the sense of urgency! Take a deep breath and remember that this piece of latex/ polyurethane/lambskin is the protection you and your partner(s) need, and taking an extra few seconds to do this part right is worth it, every time.

Which way does the condom roll?

Hold the tip of the condom and start to

unroll it to help you figure out which way to put it on. This can be done without the condom ever touching the penis or dildo/vibrator/cucumber, and you don’t have to unroll it very far. If you have placed it on the penis or toy the wrong way and you decide to flip it over and just try again, know that you have exposed the exterior of the condom to any fluids that may have been on the penis/toy, defeating the purpose of using a condom in the first place.

Lube, lube, and more lube! Now is the time to drop some lube in and on the condom and on the penis/toy to not only protect the condom but to also increase sensation for all involved! Certain condoms need certain lubes: latex condoms can be used with water-based or silicone-based lubes. DO NOT use oil-based lubes with latex condoms, ever. The oil degrades the latex, weakening it and causing it to eventually break. Polyurethane condoms can be used with any type of lube – water, silicone, or oil.

Rollin’! Rollin’ on the shaft! And don’t forget to pinch the tip. Holding the tip of the condom, known as the reservoir, place the condom on the penis/toy, and roll it all the way to the base. The idea is to cover as much of the shaft as possible, to prevent exposure and slippage, which can lead to spillage.

Do it. Whatever sex you’ll be engaging in – vaginal sex, anal sex, oral sex with a penis or toy. And while you are doing it make sure to...
