FROM THE BLOG

»» News from our site on the interwebs you may have missed DUI-FOs It turns out that even with all the pious depictions of extraterrestrials in films, aliens might not be as angelic as we’d like to think. Back in July, a mysterious-looking aircraft that resembled a UFO was allegedly spotted hovering over somewhere in Mexico, according to KFI AM 640. The video was uploaded to YouTube by RED WHITE AND DISCLOSURE on Aug. 3, and when the camera zooms in on the object, the disc-shaped craft appears to tilt precariously back and forth like the craft controller is under the influence. Unfortunately, it appears the skies are not nearly as monitored by law enforcement as the Earth is because alas, there was no second UFO pulling up behind it with lights flashing. Also, how might an extraterrestrial perform a sobriety test? Do they have to be able to walk on the ceiling in a straight line? Do they have to blow into a breathalyzer using all their tentacles at once? What is the universal punishment for flying a spacecraft under the influence? Is it probation where they’re sentenced to planet Earth in human form to serve as Donald Trump’s White House press secretary until their allotted time is up? We have so many questions.

(at the earliest). With Denver’s recent decriminalization of psychedelic mushrooms, the company is making plans in anticipation of the substance becoming more widely accepted and regulation eventually loosening up.

the screenshot, Facebook removed the page because the event “went against our Community Standards. Repeated Community Standard violations can lead to your Page getting unpublished.” Who the hell knows what that means.

“Just as cannabis has been misunderstood and controversial for decades, psilocybin from mushrooms has been equally polarizing, yet proponents of both suggest they each can contribute meaningfully to the human experience,” Strava CEO Andrew Aamot said in a statement.

Later, a Facebook representative claimed removing the page was just one big mistake and the event was restored to its rightful place online. A government cover-up? Perhaps...

Using “microdoses of psilocybin,” Strava hopes to offer products that will help users cope with anxiety and depression. Research from institutions like John Hopkins University is showing that psilocybin has therapeutic benefits, according to a 2018 article in the medical journal Neuropharmacology. Strava has a history of being ahead of the grind when it comes to incorporating plants into their products. In 2017, they were one of the first roasters to infuse CBD into their coffee.

Despite these setbacks, Roberts is now planning an Area 51 festival in Nevada to take place the same day the tongue-in-cheek raid was supposed to – Sept. 20 – though, not at Area 51. Roberts also posted an event page for the Area 51 festival but that too was taken down. “I think it’s pretty reckless of Facebook, especially because I’m trying to direct people away from storming the base,” Roberts said in reaction to both pages being removed. “And now I’ve lost my entire audience.”

in 2019, we’re officially onto spin-offs. After noticing the chemistry and popularity of the side characters in “The Fate of the Furious” (2017), played by Dwayne ‘the Rock’ Johnson and Jason Statham, Universal Pictures began planning a fulllength feature starring the two. “Hobbs and Shaw” is in the same vein as the typical “two authority figures who are paired up despite disliking each other” trope. Here, Luke Hobbs (Johnson) and Deckard Shaw (Statham) are assigned to be partners in tracking down an evil, super powerful agent called Brixton (Idris Elba), who is on the hunt for a deadly virus that could wipe out the planet. But Shaw’s sister Hattie (Vanessa Kirby) gets it first and dramatically injects it into herself before Brixton can grab it. Now both the leads and the villain are racing to find her first before the virus becomes contagious, which has a ticking clock of three days.

This is where we are with “Fast & Furious.” Going from car-centric heist flicks to super-villains with globally devastating viruses. But don’t worry, we still have plenty of cars on screen. Ridgway, the redheaded stepchild of the San Juan Skyway, is a great area for foodies

As we drove into town, we got a peek at the dramatic views of the San Juan mountains. Unlike Ouray and Silverton, where you’re nestled in amongst the mountains, Ridgway is on the northern flank of the range, and you can see the full force of the peaks in the distance. Drive out to the reservoir at Ridgway State Park and the views are even better. So far, off to a good start, and I got a sudden hankering to re-watch “True Grit.”

the Sky Bar had a killer 365 view that was perfect for a sunset drink after a soak in their relaxing pools. As we headed out for dinner, we wandered into Steps Patio Tavern. The outdoor space was brand new – it’s only been open for a few months – but it’s designed to feel like you’re hanging out in someone’s backyard. We sidled up to the bar (a wooden backyard shed converted into a two-window bar area) as the crowd behind us cheered to the sound of the life-sized Jenga two-by-fours crashing to the ground. The bartender filled us in on the scoop: the only late-night bar in town (Steps) just opened this patio tavern, and they’re hoping it can stay open most of the year. He expects they’ll throw a bunch of parties throughout the year. In the summer months, they sling slushy pina coladas and margs, but winter warmers would certainly be on the menu in the cooler months.

We moved on to dinner and my favorite pizza in the state at Colorado Boy. As you walk in, the mirrors that line the back wall make the space feel larger than it is, but in reality, the stainless steel kettles and fermenters take up There are only three hotels in town most of the indoor space, reminding you (although quite a few more Airbnbs), but that they brew on site. When I told my friends I was headed to Ridgway for the weekend, it didn’t really surprise me when the response was, “Why?” It’s not that anyone hates on Ridgway; it just seems like a middle-of-nowhere kind of town, nestled unceremoniously between Telluride and Ouray on the San Juan Skyway. Weekend trips are usually planned around who has the best vistas (a ride on Telluride’s gondola, for sure) or the best access to hot springs (Ouray or Pagosa Springs, definitely). So why stop in the tiny town of Ridgway? If you knew what I knew, you’d plan a weekend trip right now, because Ridgway is one of the best foodie towns in the area.

[eat] From page 5 at a handful of indoor tables. It gets crowded, but luckily there’s plenty of patio picnic seating outside. They always have a great collection of beers, including a rotating cask (that day was pale ale, my fave). The pizza is phe-frickin-nomenal; the stone oven gets just hot enough to crisp up the edges of the crust without burning it like a woodfired oven. The dough is chewy and bready, and they top it with sauce that actually tastes like tomatoes (no tomato paste-y sauce here). It’s so good that there’s no need to ask for a side of ranch (although I would fully recommend dipping the crust into their homemade chili oil). The next morning we grabbed a light breakfast at the hotel. We knew it was going to be a gut-bomb kind of day, and we needed to work up an appetite. You can fish or paddle around the reservoir, go hiking (Blue Lakes Trailhead is only 30 minutes away), or golf up on the mesa at Loghill. No matter what you choose, you’ll definitely want to be hungry when you head into Tacos del Gnar. This next-level taco shop has a thousand tacos (okay, not really, but it feels overwhelming to have to choose). Hopefully you’re not a picky eater or have food allergies, because each taco is loaded up with ingredients. Choose from tacos filled with Bulgogi beef, crispy rice noodles, and funky kimchi, or go more traditional with house chorizo, queso, slaw, and something amazing called Rick Ross sauce. If seafood is your jam, they have beer battered cod, seared rare ahi tuna, or tempura shrimp, and there are more than a few veggie-friendly options. My personal favorite was the lambrizo (spicy lamb sausage), and I couldn’t get enough of the loaded yuca fries. They. Were. Everything. After a few Underbergs and a brisk walk around the tiny town, we still weren’t really hungry for dinner, which was a bad combination dinner at the Adobe Inn. The portions are ginormous. As we walked down the dirt road to get there, we were pretty unimpressed with this hostel-meets-restaurant, but the inside was cozy and warm. The margaritas were strong and not too sweet, and their refried beans were absolutely out of this world. The entrées all come with this amazing corn pudding conglomeration that’s filled with sweet corn, savory cheese, and spicy chilies. Our only complaint is that we didn’t come with the appetite a place like this deserves. Before heading out the next morning, we headed to Provisions at the Barbershop for brunch. The building looks like an Old West saloon; it’s modern and hip inside. A chunky brick wall lines the right side of the café, but the coffee counter is chic white marble. At night you can belly up to the marble bar for an adult beverage, but they’re all about the coffee drinks in the morning. It was almost impossible to decide what to get – Huevos rancheros? Brown butter waffles? Pastrami hash with duck fat roasted potatoes? – but I finally settled on the black bean and quinoa bowl. The tomatoes tasted garden fresh, and the addition of a parsley pistou and sunflower seeds really took it to the next level.

Chang Thai Durango is the latest dubbed goldat-the-end-of-yourchopsticks heaven Last year I moved away from Suwanee Thai Cuisine, one of a handful of places worth eating at in central Nebraska, and there’s been a drunken noodles-shaped hole in my soul ever since. The owner of Suwanee, a Thai native who named the restaurant after his wife, would take an annual trip back to Thailand every summer and come back with new inspiration for his dishes. I was always heartbroken when they would close temporarily, but I took comfort in knowing the food would be that much more delicious when I returned.

We tried our best to pack in all the food we could, but we’ll have to go back to try out the restaurants we missed. Just make sure to plan ahead. The entire town seems to shut down at 9 p.m., and most of the restaurants are closed between 2:30 and 5 p.m. (including Eatery 66, our white whale of this trip).

Alas, I am now a thousand miles away from said Thai cuisine castle, and to be honest with you, I was spoiled by my time at the tables of Suwanee. It’s turned me into a picky eater when it comes to Thai food, and I’ve had trouble finding options that match the freshness and ingenuity that I experienced in, of all places, small-town Nebraska.

—— Lindsay Mattison

Pad Thai, spring rolls, crispy silver bags, steamed

dumplings, mango sticky rice, and drunken noodles have long been a comfort food staple and I expect nothing less than perfection. It’s unfair, I know. So, you can probably understand my apprehension about stepping up to the Chang Thai Durango food truck at 11th Street Station for the first time. I was with a group of people who immediately scattered amongst the park looking to appease their appetites. Chang Thai stands where Mariana’s Authentic Cuisine once stood – right at the entrance of the food truck park. Their menu is extensive and carries everything from cheese Rangoon to fried rice and tofu. You even have the option of choosing your spice levels – one being the mildest, with five being the hottest. I was there for the drunken noodles. OK, and maybe the cheese Rangoon, and maybe the mango sticky rice, too.

Our guesses for the Telluride Film Festival Cannes. Toronto. Sundance. The Telluride Film Festival stands out as one of the most prestigious movie-showcasing events in the world. Taking place in the small, romantic mountain town of Telluride, this Colorado film festival offers a unique backdrop of towering mountains and breathtaking vantage points. The walk around downtown ain’t half bad either. The views aren’t the only reason for the siren call of movie buffs, though. Films by the likes of movie giants Kathryn Bigelow, Ken Burns, Ang Lee, Pedro Almodóvar, and Errol Morris have spotlighted at this film festival. After filmmakers like Alejandro G. Iñárritu, Andrea Arnold, Steve McQueen, Alfonso Cuarón, and Alexander Payne opened up their movies to viewers in Telluride, they went on to receive accolades and awards. One of the biggest draws of the festival, however, is the great pains in which organizers keep the movie titles a secret.

racial and political divide in the city.

This is great if you’re looking forward to the big surprises at the festival, but not when your editor is expecting you to come up with enough words to fill a page.

“Pain and Glory,” by Pedro Almodóvar: Antonio Banderas plays Salvador Mallo, a director whose health is declining. As a result, he experiences a creative block accompanied by a reckoning with his past.

So, here goes. We movie buffs at DGO Mag will attempt to predict what viewers can expect at the 46th annual Telluride Film Festival. Be warned: these are probably all wrong and are mostly just the movies we hope will preview at the festival. “The Farewell,” by Lulu Wang: This critically acclaimed dramedy tells the story of a family who decides not to tell the family matriarch that she is dying and all get together one last time before she dies. “The Irishman,” by Martin Scorsese: Scorsese’s latest crime drama is based on Charles Brandt’s book, “I Heard You Paint Houses.” The film centers on Frank Sheeran and his relationships within the Bufalino crime family. “Atlantics: A Ghost Love Story,” by Mati Diop: This film takes place in

»»  Telluride Film Festival, courtesy Senegal and tells the story of the relationship between a young construction worker and a woman who is being forced into an arranged marriage. “Motherless Brooklyn,” by Edward Norton: Writer-director-producer Edward Norton adapted Jonathan Lethem’s book, “Motherless Brooklyn,” to be set in 1950s New York. Down-on-his-luck private detective Lionel Essrog uncovers a conspiracy that creates an even bigger

“Beanpole,” by Kantemir Balagov: In post-WWII Leningrad, two Russian women, Iya and Masha, bond after fighting together as anti-aircraft gunners. The two friends attempt to acclimate themselves to a world scarred from war. “Ask Dr. Ruth,” by Ryan White: The life of America’s iconic sex therapist Dr. Ruth is detailed in this documentary. TEDxDurango will explore how speakers find the humor, even when life sucks “My mission to control and predict had turned up the answer that the way to live is with vulnerability and to stop controlling and predicting.” With this realization, Brené Brown, a research professor at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work, launched into her 2010 TEDxHouston presentation, “The Power of Vulnerability.” Brown’s musings have since accrued more than 42 million views on the TED Talk website, and she went on to present a second TED Talk and host her own one-hour Netflix special.

“The event is meant to build collaboration and community,” Dean said. “We want listeners to feel inspired and empowered and take these ideas and share them to the world.”

It’s stories like Brown’s that inspired local Kristi Dean to put on Durango’s own TED Talk event, TEDxDurango.

The theme of the event, “Finding the Humor,” came to Dean after reviewing several TED Talk events. If she was going

The event will take place Nov. 3 at the Roshong Recital Hall at Fort Lewis College. Per TEDx rules, the event is limited to 100 attendees for the live show, which is already sold out, Dean said. Denver decriminalized shrooms – what’s next for this controversial substance? Research shows psilocybin may be key in therapeutic and addiction treatments By Amanda Push DGO STAFF WRITER

At a 1971 press conference, former President Richard Nixon famously described drug use as “public enemy number one in the United States.” With an oppressive hand, the legal system began to target drug use under Nixon’s direction until he was forced to resign due to his own criminal behavior. We know today that Nixon’s War on Drugs was really a smoke-and-mirrors declaration of hostility against Black Americans and hippies. Still, even 50 years later, Americans continue to pay the price for these harsh policies with long prison sentences, racial profiling, and generational poverty cycles. There seems to be a light at the end of the tunnel, though, because the negative public opinion on drugs is slowly unraveling. In May, psilocybin mushrooms, or shrooms, were narrowly decriminalized in Denver (50.56 percent of voters were in favor of Ordinance 301) and not long after, the city of Oakland, California, followed suit with its stance on entheogenic plants, a broader classification that includes mushrooms and other plants and fungi containing psychoactive substances. These changes in policy at local government levels have inspired a renewed interest in the substance since Nixon’s War on Drugs. At the Psychedelic Club of Denver, Joey Gallagher, the executive director of Psychedelic Club – a 501(c)(3) national nonprofit dedicated to providing a community for psychedelic users – said the legislation has piqued public interest in hallucinogenics. “We’ve been pretty energized. ... Our social media followers almost doubled and our meetings went from fifteen to twenty people to twenty-five to thirty people,” Gallagher said. “This is definitely the beginning of the end of the Drug War. Pieces are being moved and dominoes are falling.”

[feature] A doorway to end addiction? When a person ingests a shroom, the psilocybin disrupts receptors in their brain that are believed to be responsible for boltering addictive behaviors, according to the University of Alabama at Birmingham website. Psychologically, it is considered “to reduce cravings, increase a sense of one’s self-efficacy and increase motivation.” It’s for these reasons that scientists like Peter Hendricks, an associate professor and researcher at UAB, are looking into psilocybin, the psychoactive component in mushrooms, as a treatment for drug addiction. Hendricks, along with his research partner Sara Lappan, are working with 20 volunteers who suffer from cocaine addiction to study the effects psilocybin has on their addiction, both in the longand short-term. “This isn’t a dangerous substance, but it changes lives with lasting benefits,” Hendricks said. “There was a lot of excitement and enthusiasm (in the 1960s) but it disappeared, and the reason it disappeared was the association with the counterculture.” The volunteers are screened for health issues and then once a week for four weeks, Hendricks and Lappan meet with the subjects for two hours to learn more about them and help them understand what to expect during their psychedelic trip. After four weeks, the psilocybin is administered to the person at an outpatient treatment center with a team of nurses at the ready. They meet with the subject once a week for four weeks following the treatment, and then again at the 90-day and the 180-day marks.

example. He changed for the better, but would he want a visit from these ghosts every Christmas Eve? No.” Hendricks has a lot of compassion for addicts, as the justice system tends to punish those with addictions – people who have usually suffered a great deal in their life and lost everything, including a support system. “(The Latin root for the word) addiction essentially means to be a slave to something,” Hendricks said. “This is not a good place to be. Everyone who has dealt with addiction has tried over and over and they can’t break free. Take for example the tobacco world, which is my home (research) base. We’ve spent a lot of time helping people quit tobacco. But, if I give one hundred smokers the best treatment money can buy, seventy out of one hundred will still be smoking.” In other words? Even with a substance like tobacco that isn’t nearly as addictive as heroin and cocaine, users only have a 30 percent chance of kicking their habit. As for the future of psilocybin?

“We’ll have to see. A lot of that will depend on our findings and if our hypothesis gains momentum,” Hendricks said. “There’s only a handful of places researching psilocybin and the public funding for that kind of work is not there. We’re relying on private donors but there’s nothing quite like the government funding to get this kind of work done. Studies are expensive – large studies can cost between two and three million. I think if we really want to gain some momentum we need public funding.”

and I think people are realizing the legal classification was class-driven and there’s a lot of benefits.” Hallucinogenic therapy Aside from its potential use as addiction treatment, therapists are also attempting to make headway with psychedelics as a means of healing.

As a scientist, all he can do is continue his research objectively and hope the results begin to sway public opinion, but interest is growing.

Daniel McQueen, a co-founder of Medicinal Mindfulness in Boulder and author of “Psychedelic Cannabis: Breaking the Gate,” has been involved in the hallucinogenic community for 20 years. As therapists, McQueen and his wife, Alison, and their team offer psychedelically induced psychotherapy sessions at their Boulder clinic.

“People are interested at the moment,” he said. “I think a lot of people are looking back on that first wave of research that we dropped the ball on. There was a lot of promise but the association with the counterculture and sensationalized reports in the media derailed the scientific research. We saw the same sort of thing with cannabis

At one point much earlier in his life, McQueen worked as an apprentice to someone with a nontraditional healing practice that involved psilocybin. Eventually, he got involved with MAPS and became an MDMA therapist. After he graduated from grad school, though, cannabis became legal and though he had experienced meaningful encounters

“This isn’t a dangerous substance, but it changes lives with lasting benefits.” Peter Hendricks, associate professor and researcher at the University of Alabama Birmingham

So far, Hendricks said the study is showing statistical support for the hypothesis that psilocybin is effective against drug addiction. He said they were enthusiastic, but they aren’t going to get too excited until the end of the study. They are scientists and must follow the data and remain objective, after all. When asked whether they would participate in the treatment again, most participants say no, even though the event was life-changing. “It’s not a rush. It’s not a euphoric experience,” Hendricks said. “The experience is challenging and difficult. There might be moments of fear and anxiety. In many ways, it’s years of therapy condensed into a few hours. ... I often use the analogy of Ebenezer Scrooge as an

with hallucinogenics, he wanted to legally contribute to psychedelic therapy. Thus, he chose to practice using only cannabis as a psychedelic substance. He mixes a blend of indicas, sativas, and hybrids to help boost the body experience and lower client anxiety. Psychedelics, if used in a safe and proper environment, McQueen said, can be incredibly helpful to those suffering from anxiety and depression. They can help us explore our brains in a way traditional medicines and practices can’t. “Psychedelics allow us access to a deeper process – more often than not, an unconscious level that’s hard to access without these medicines. It gets to root of problems in some ways regular therapy can’t,” McQueen said. “There’s nothing as consistently reliable as psychedelics to elicit these states. A lot of trauma is stored in the body, so releasing this cellular tension is unique. It provides greater access to memory and recall so people can heal from injuries that might have happened in early childhood or even in the womb. ... They don’t mask problems or numb us. They get to the core root and address those issues.”

While McQueen adamantly believes adults should have the freedom to use hallucinogenics to explore their own brains, he also acknowledges that these substances can sometimes produce bad trips. If the individual isn’t using them in an environment that’s safe and supportive, the experience can be difficult to process. Part of his practice involves helping those who have had bad experiences with psychedelics and addressing misconceptions about them, like that they’re addictive and not safe. He also works with people to process those psychedelic experiences. “My first mushroom trip was very inspiring, but I struggled a little bit after that. I had a positive experience but there was a lot to hold. The integration of psychology didn’t exist. I didn’t have a lot of resources. I tried to share it with people to understand what I went through. It might have been the reason I went into psychotherapy – so I could understand my experience and help others,” McQueen said. There’s still a lot of paranoia surrounding substances like cannabis and psychedelics, and it’s a trauma that’s been ingrained in our culture, McQueen said.

“I answer a lot of questions in my sessions and help address misconceptions,” he said. “The War on Drugs was a traumatic experience and it still is. We’re helping not to just address those misconceptions but help heal that trauma. People still panic when they see a cop. People are still having those reactions to officers.” What the hallucinogenic experience is really missing, however, is the language surrounding the trip. Many users balk when attempting to describe their sometimes life-changing experiences. Words elude the brain. “I’m inventing language all the time,” McQueen said. “We’re seeing an evolution of cultural awareness and it requires a new language. Psychotherapy doesn’t quite fit it – it’s too big. ... So, we’re inventing language as we go.” If magic mushrooms ever do become legal, McQueen said he hopes to incorporate them into his practice. In fact, he is already researching safety measures, potential restraints, and legalities. He has applied for expanded access to MDMA treatment, and is in the early stages of planning a psilocybin retreat in a country where it’s legal.

One might say that psychedelics, specifically shrooms, may even take the same pathway as marijuana – a slow, holy roll toward legalization, state by state. “It’s too useful,” McQueen said. “In the right context, it’s so healing, and the more people that have those experiences, the more people are going to start to demand it when they realize how meaningful these experiences are. “I don’t know how to describe it. Sometimes these medicines find you, but I feel like I’m a better person for these experiences – not just inside, but for the planet. It’s hard to ignore the implications of that. You see the world differently. Most of my clients are very creative and have large emotional capacities and they want meaning in their life. ... I don’t think we can imagine the next ten years right now. We’re going to be facing a deep ecological crisis while we unravel these ideas, but psychedelics are going to play an instrumental part in this. There’s already innovation and there’s going to be more innovation that is psychedelic inspired, and those innovations are going change the world.”

The new Craft Panacea Nug Cones are a kick in the stoner pants The other day I had a conversation about whether birds will eat other birds. Before you get the wrong idea, we weren’t talking about like, tiny red robins eating bluebirds or something. We were curious as to whether turkeys will eat cooked chicken if you toss it to them and so on. This dumbass conversation was courtesy of one very potent Craft Panacea Nug Cone, which came to us from our friends at Prohibition Herb. So what, pray tell, is a Panacea Nug Cone, you ask? Good question, friends. The short answer is “deadly.” The long answer is “new caviar style joints, which are made with full nug flower and infused with live resin.” I like live resin because it not only contains a huge amount of THC, but also because it tastes delicious, and this was no exception. They come in three different options: indica, sativa, and hybrid, and although I can’t attest to the effects of the indica or sativa cones, I can tell you that one half of the hybrid cone almost caused the death of my brain.

it: these bitches are strong. Very strong. I lit the hybrid version up with a couple of friends, including my sister, who was visiting from Austin for the week and doesn’t regularly smoke. She only took a couple of hits, but the rest of us smoked the joint about halfway down before deciding we should probably slow down. It was a good call, because I honestly don’t think we could have handled much more THC. We also couldn’t have handled more choking, which occurred every time anyone took a hit. My god, you guys. These cones aren’t made for chumps. They’re harsh. They’re good, mind you – they have plenty of flavor and they taste really fresh, but I was coughing like I belonged in a tuberculosis ward. They basically made a punk out of my lungs.

They also made a punk out of my brain, which is the fun part. After we’d smoked that half cone, we trudged inside and parked ourselves in front of “Most Expensivest,” the best stoner show on the planet. As soon as our asses sank I kid, mostly, but make no mistake about into the couch, though, the conversa-

Out of nowhere, one of us asked: “Do birds eat other birds?” Oddly enough, I was able to relay an anecdote about sitting outside at some crappy P.F. Changs in Los Angeles and trying to feed the birds little bits of chicken lettuce wraps. Those little scavenger birds didn’t eat the chicken, but I’m guessing they would have had they been buzzards. This conversation sounds really stupid this morning.

Things only got stranger from there. At one point, my face felt like it was rolling in wave-like movements, and I couldn’t quite figure out what the hell was happening on one very trippy episode of “Most Expensivest.” I also kept trying to write notes but would forget what the hell I wanted to say. There is one, though, that is clear, and it says, “Robots are trippy as fuck.” I stand by that. I didn’t make it long past that one episode of 2 Chainz’s bee-related antics, though. That cone kicked my ass, and I vaguely remember stumbling around looking for a blanket before curling up and passing my ass right out. I woke up confused and warm a couple of hours later. These new cones are super. The live resin adds a kick to the pants that is best shared with friends. That way you can all ponder whether birds are cannibals or not. Sometimes it takes a village to answer an idiotic question. —— DGO Pufnstuf

The pad Thai had a surprising sweetness to it, while the drunken noodles were packed with intense flavors and textures.

I then went back and forth to the fridge, looking for god knows what before finding a piece of cheesecake my sober self had stashed away for my stoned self. It was such a win. And, at some point I either passed out or got so high that I stopped taking notes, but I can’t remember which. Either is possible. So, yeah. Rocky Mountain High certainly did pull out all the stops for this review, and for that my dad and I thank them. That lava is something else. Guess I’ll have to start adding it to that stash I pass along to El Padre behind my mom’s back. He’s definitely a fan of this one. —— DGO Pufnstuf me so I rolled my eyes, disappointed that we weren’t choosing an ice cream dish. To my utter shock, the mango sticky rice far surpassed any dessert we could have ordered. It had been years since I had a proper bowl of mango sticky rice, and the one from Chang Thai instantly took me back to those first few bites from long ago. The sticky rice clung to the sweet, juicy mangoes in glorious matrimony. But if you want to get a hold of this dish, you’re going to have to get to the food truck park early. Every other time I’ve swung by Chang Thai, they’ve been out.

It’d been so long since I’d had a Thai dish that hit the spot, but I was willing to give Chang Thai a chance.

In between bites of our noodle dishes, we also crammed in our side order of cheese Rangoon and mango sticky rice for dessert.

So was my dad, who kept trying to communicate with my mom and failing miserably. I was greatly amused by the show. I, on the other hand, felt higher than I ever do with concentrates, and my notes make reference to it time and again. I also made sure to note that my thumbs were super numb, but only in the creases. This Lazercat Lava is not for the faint of heart.

filling, and I regretted offering to share them with the rest of the table. It should be known that I am a huge sucker for mango sticky rice. The first time I experienced this dish I was getting lunch with a friend who ordered it for dessert. I had no idea what kind of food bliss awaited

The best way to sum up Chang Thai is that it’s fresh. While I realize that’s a vague way to describe cuisine, it’s challenging to find something that tastes fresh, especially when it comes to exotic foods and flavors. But, thanks to restaurants like Chang Thai, Durango is overcoming that mountain, so to speak. —— Amanda Push

Few things are as heartwarming as watching Wile E. Coyote attempt to capture the roadrunner by painting a fake landscape. The aggravatingly fast bird foils his plan every time by stepping through the painting as though it were real. It’s inevitable that Wile will get hit by a semi that was inside of the painting shortly after. It’s a lovely dance, and sometimes you find yourself rooting for the coyote. Las Cruces, New Mexico, is clearly Team Roadrunner. Just off of Interstate 10 between mileposts 134 and 135 stands a 20-foot tall and 40-foot long roadrunner made out of materials scavenged from a landfill. In fact, if you visit the sculpture today, you can see its belly made of old shoes. The sculpture was built by artist Olin Calk in 1993 and has remained a local icon. The piece is meant to draw attention to our consumption and recycling habits, AKA, y’all need to recycle. In 2001, Calk took the material out of the statue, replaced it with newer garbage, and then moved the big ol’ bird to a rest stop along I-10. The giant roadrunner could be seen for miles and it reinvigorated public interest. It helped

that the bird stood at a point with a great view of Las Cruces. Ten years later, though, the sculpture suffered damage from visitors messing with the bird (some people thought it would be a good idea to climb on top of the bird and/or steal trash from it) along with the desert weather. To protect it, Calk took it down and hauled it back to his home. There it sat for three years before the city allowed it to be placed back at the rest area. At that point, though, it was time to get new trash. The landfill had closed by 2014, so the artist used material from thrift stores and scrap metal from the Las Cruces recycling center instead. The best new addition is the eyes, which are made of Volkswagen headlights. If you do happen to cross paths with the infamous roadrunner, beware: rattlesnakes are known to roam that area. It is, after all, the desert. These days, the statue is mounted on a fake rock to protect it from humans. We can’t even leave a garbage bird statue alone. This is why we can’t have nice things. —— Amanda Push

[love and sex]

A healthy way of stepping outside sexual monogamy is possible It just involves some nerdy definitions and clear communication What do you do when you look at someone who is not your primary partner and you say, “Yumm!”? How do you meet your sexual needs when the love of your life is no longer able to have sex due to illness? When you meet someone new and you want them to know that you prefer an open relationship, what do you say? Are you interested in having a threesome? Have you been invited to an orgy?

amous Orgy n. 1 secret ceremonial rites held in honor of an ancient Greek or Roman deity and usually characterized by ecstatic singing and dancing - Roman orgies in honor of Bacchus

2a drunken revelry 2b a sexual encounter involving many people : also an excessive sexual indulgence 3 excessive indulgence in something especially to Answering any of these questions with satisfy an inordinate appetite or craving a solution outside of sexual monogamy is Polyamory n. 1 the state or practice totally possible. A couple of months ago, of having more than one open romantic I wrote about the importance of more relationship at a time than one relationship feeding our needs Swinger n. 1 a person who is lively, and desires; it was an acknowledgment exciting, and fashionable 2 one who that no one person is able to give us engages freely in sex everything we need. Threesome n. 1 a group of three Sexual monogamy is just one type of persons or things 2 a golf match in which relationship and I propose that educatone person plays his or her ball against ing people about different relationship the ball of two others playing each models does not increase cheating but stroke alternately 3 a sexual encounter does increase honest communication. All involving three people relationships require hard work, honesty, respect, and constant communication. Friendships are just as hard to navigate as a 50 year marriage. Polyamory, open relationships, or participating in an orgy are talked about as if they are on the fringes of society, when in fact they have been in practice by humans since we crawled out of the ooze. Research Before I get sidetracked by one of my favorite soapboxes – the creation of monogamy/marriage to control womxn – let’s dive into some definitions. My deeply nerdy self loves my dictionary and I adore reading the definition of a word – it reveals so much. In no particular order, here are some words connected to relationship models and sexual behaviors: Friend n. 1a one attached to another by affection or esteem 1b acquaintance 2a one that is not hostile 2b one that is of the same nation, party, or group 3 one that favors or promotes something 4 a favored companion Monogamy n. 1 the practice or state of being married to only one person at a time 2 [rare] the practice of marrying only once during life 3 Zool. the practice of having only one mate Open Relationship 1 an intimate relationship that is sexually non-monog-

the other and do not have sexual relationships outside of their core relationship. They have similar values, which help to cement their relationship with each other.

Friends and Beyond Who learned something new from these definitions? I had not heard about the golfing threesome before this (probably because I don’t golf). A person who is lively, exciting, and fashionable sounds like it can apply well outside of the 1960s! My absolute favorite is the fourth definition of friend, “a favored companion.” A friendship is the most widely accepted intimate connection in our society that occurs outside of our primary relationship. Our friends may be the people we do a particular activity with and are a source of connection for shared likes, dislikes, history, and support. Intimacy in friendship can overlap with a romantic/sexual relationship through shared emotional, spiritual, or even physical connection. A romantic or sexual partnership shares many of the same values, connections, and behaviors as a friendship. The overlap is clear and again, widely accepted. If you expect that a single person will be a friend and a romantic/sexual partner who shares in all the same activities, values, and behaviors as you – this creates an enormous amount of work and pressure for that one individual. Imagine letting go of the expectation that someone completes you or is the “one,” and fill your life with a variety of people who

love you, or at the very least like you. Does this mean you need to jump into a polyamorous relationship? Take up swinging? Invite a third or fourth person into your bedroom? Hardly. All relationships require a lot of work and honest communication to be successful. What I am trying to suggest is that healthy relationships are rooted in recognizing your needs, while meeting them with awareness and multiple sources i.e. people. Exploring Relationships Let’s get out of my head and try some real-life scenarios. The names have been changed to protect the identities of the folks involved, and none of these folks are located in Colorado. Any similarities to folks you may know are a coincidence. Scenario 1 Parker and Riley have been in a monogamous relationship for 40 years. Parker regularly travels to other countries alone or with a close friend. Riley has an annual camping trip with the same three friends. Although Riley and Parker practice monogamy in their sexual relationship, they have communicated to each other that they feel deep connections – spiritual, emotional, or romantic – to other people in their lives. Both of them openly share the physical attractions they have toward others and use that sexual tension to pleasure each other. Scenario 2 Taylor, Jordan, and Morgan are in a polyamorous relationship. They share household responsibilities, they each contribute monetarily, and they practice open, honest, and clear communication. They have each made a commitment to

Reagan is on dating websites as someone who is interested in being a third in a threesome. They are interested in joining two people who are already in a relationship and looking for an additional person for their sexual activities. Reagan is not looking for a committed relationship and is exploring experiences. They do ask that any couple they have sex with agrees to a set of rules about the interaction, including that the couple only communicates with Reagan as a couple and never as individuals. Scenario 4 Riley and Avery have an open relationship. Avery has a chronic illness that impedes their libido and has made an agreement with Riley that they can have an open sexual relationship. Riley and Avery are married and are monogamous in every other aspect of their relationship. They continue to have sex with each other and openly discuss when either one of them wants to have sex with someone else. Coooooomuuuunicaaaaation The key element of all of these scenarios is communication. Some people choose to write up contracts that are changeable depending on the situation. Some people have verbal agreements that they revisit monthly. Other people discuss details and agreements as the need arises. However it is done, exploring different relationships requires constant work, honesty, and respect. Bees don’t live off of one flower and humans shouldn’t have to live off of one relationship. Go and find people who fill your cup, meet your desires, and challenge you to be a better person! Erin Brandt (she/her/hers) has been a sexologist for 15 years. When she’s not spreading sexual knowledge, Erin can be found learning from her child, hiking with her partner, cuddling with her pitbull, knitting with her cat, dancing with friends, and searching for the nearest hammock and ocean breeze.
