C

Revised hours. Limited indoor capacity. Outside seating. Duneland’s businesses had to reinvent themselves, virtually overnight, like most businesses around the globe in order to survive. Most still struggle, but the Duneland Chamber of Commerce has been a faithful companion every step of the way, as they will be in the future.

Maura Durham, president of the Duneland Chamber of Commerce, says that being responsive to the needs of the business community was top priority to the staff, which means being both reactive and proactive. “During the onset of the pandemic, we really tried to be as available and flexible as possible, answering any questions coming in. All of our members had questions about the pandemic and what they needed to do with changes in legislation such

as the Families First Coronavirus Response Act, how they could obtain PPE, and how they could secure financial assistance with the grant and loan opportunities. So we tried to keep our office open and as stable as we possibly could. We wanted to make sure people could come to us and we would be regarded as a hub of information and resources. We also helped to navigate members to seminars through the Indiana State Chamber who provided daily seminars to help businesses stay on top of information, which changed on a daily basis. We also used our Facebook page and the Duneland Chamber of Commerce website to create a resource guide for our members so they had a place to access state, county, and local information,” she says.

In addition to providing information, the Duneland Chamber of Commerce also collected information. Durham explains, “We

were looking at all of our members and collecting information on how their hours of business may have changed, as well as any guidelines they had put into place for their business. Depending on which store you were going to, their hours or days may have changed and we didn’t know if they were closed temporarily or for good, so we wanted to collect the correct information so we could let the community know. We needed to let their patrons know if they were doing curbside or virtual orders.

It was all different depending on the business but if people called in, we could answer them.”

The Duneland Chamber of Commerce also had to reinvent themselves during the pandemic since the spring, summer, and fall months are typically full of events that draw consumers to town. One of the events immediately impacted by the pandemic was the annual Corkscrew

and Brew event. “The weekend the stay-athome-order was scheduled, which was also the weekend of St. Patrick’s Day, we had to cancel the Corkscrew and Brew. Within hours of the governor’s order, we had to get that information out to our vendors and hundreds of customers who may have been coming to Chesterton for the first time. It was a challenge. We decided to postpone the event for three months and hoped that things would evolve and change and we could work through constraints, but by then we found that wasn’t going to happen. Now we have rescheduled for November 7th and we are working very closely with the town of Chesterton, with our partners, and the Porter County Health Department to provide a responsible community event. At the end of the day we still want our community to thrive and we need to do something,” Durham says.

Chesterton’s European Market was also on the calendar during the height of the pandemic.

An event that draws thousands of people was now a challenge for planners to reinvent. “It was imperative for our downtown businesses to have traffic coming into town, as well as our vendors who have been with us for 20 years.

They needed to have that lifeline. So when we opened the market, we started with 10% of our regular number of vendors, so only 10 vendors and we’ve grown it back to about 50% of what it normally offers. We’re using a smaller footprint, counting people in and out, requiring masks, and asking vendors to do things differently. We’re also working with the town of Chesterton to extend the market for the first time so we’ll go straight through to the Mistletoe Market on December 5th. We have worked hard to make the market a safe environment for people to come and enjoy,” she says.

Durham says that none of this reinvention would be possible without the ingenuity of the Duneland Chamber of Commerce staff.

She says, “I am very proud of our team. We have always been flexible in working remotely and changing our hours to meet the demands of the business community and our personal lives, so now we have only streamlined our processes. The pandemic has actually forced us to implement things that we were all dragging our feet on doing until it was a necessity, which is a positive thing. Moving forward, any events we plan we have to look at it three months out because there is so much change. We have to pivot and move forward, pivot and move forward, pivot and move forward. So that’s what we’re doing. We are listening to our members and we’re strategizing what 2021 will look like. This year has been an important year for change that will continue into the future and much of that is for the positive. A lot of us grew from it and we’ll be a little heartier. It’s part of our story and we’re still writing the pages.”

When the pandemic impacted virtually every facet of life across the globe early last spring, the Duneland community came together to support one another, albeits from a distance. The business community in particular employed innovative and creative changes to keep customers safe and keep doors open. As a result, Duneland will emerge strong and united.

Chesterton Fit Body Boot Camp Pivots to Meet Client Needs It is fair to say that the pandemic has left no one untouched by changing procedures. Businesses have had to dig deep into their creative toolboxes to find ways to do what they do while still staying safe.

Chesterton Fit Body Boot Camp is no exception. Ian Bowen, owner, says that they had to adapt quickly to offer virtual and modified in-person workouts so clients could continue on their paths to health and wellness.

“When the pandemic hit we had to shut our doors and could no longer train anyone in person. We had to change our business overnight into an online business. To continue to service our members we had to think of ways to still keep them in shape, burn fat, build muscle, and integrate healthy nutrition. We started to film workouts and post them on a daily basis. We would post the workout along with a recipe of the day and a mindset or philosophy of the day so people could stay uplifted. Additionally we’d give our members something to do with their kids at home, so a link to do something with the

family. We wanted to keep people engaged and give them something to do since they were going to be stuck inside and a victim to their own devices. We wanted to do due diligence to keep our members on track,” says Bowen.

After the lockdown was over, Bowen says they made dozens of changes to ensure safety for their members. “When we opened our doors, we could not be at 100% capacity. We were at only 50% capacity and could only train 15 people at a time. To make sure we had safe distancing, we’ve created a train-inplace protocol instead of rotating between four stations and touching equipment. We have an eight foot by eight foot square taped on the floor, so members stay in that square and are able to go no place else. Members have to be six feet apart while waiting outside. They are then let in the door by a staff member so they don’t have to touch the door handles. They use a mask upon entry, come in and immediately use hand sanitizer, and we sanitize their shoes. We ask them to use separate shoes on the training floor, and we

sanitize the bottom of those as well. We are minimizing the surfaces they touch. All our coaches wear masks 100% of the time and we have bathroom protocols as well. When they leave after their workout, we open the door and hit them with hand sanitizer again,” he says.

Instituting these procedures is essential to taking care of clients, which Bowen says they call their family. “We have gone above and beyond the state mandates on keeping people safe. For those who don’t feel safe coming in, we live-stream our first workout of the day for clients to work out at home. An important part of our program is that every member has an accountability coach.

These coaches contacted their members virtually to check in, take measurements, and keep them on track and working toward their goals. We still do that now with those members who are not able to come in or choose not to. We want to continue to provide our members with the incentive to train, along with the excellent customer service they expect from us. It wasn’t easy but we had to pivot to a different direction. Luckily I have a great staff that was up to the challenge.”

FRANCISCAN ALLIANCE

Adapts to Offer Telemedicine Services Franciscan Alliance has been offering some telemedicine visits for the last few years in the out-patient setting. However, since the COVID pandemic this has become an integral part of how they offer services to patients, according to Dr. Anil Chawla, vice-president of medical affairs for Franciscan Alliance. He says that responding to the needs of the community came swiftly and these measures will likely remain in place for a long time to come.

“In March, when stay-at-home orders were coming in and all elective surgeries were being put on hold, we quickly adopted requirements for masking, social distancing, and sanitization of surfaces, etc., but saw a significant decline in clinic visits. People were scared to come in.

We realized that patients still needed their refills, get continued medical care, and get their questions answered. Systems were put in place and Franciscan started providing telemedicine services by video visits through our clinics. During the peak of the pandemic about 55% of the clinic visits for Franciscan Alliance were virtual.

Presently, as things have opened up and all the precautions are being followed, about 15% of the clinic visits are virtual,” Chawla says.

Additionally, a shortage of PPE meant that telemedicine visits could help to reduce stresses on essential supplies. Chawla explains, “In the hospital setting, during the time when we were facing PPE shortage, the doctors were limiting in-room visits for COVID patients to one or two doctor visits a day. Other doctors on the team would participate in patient’s treatment through team discussions, chart review and phone con-

versation with the patient. The care model for in-patient tele-visits is evolving. Presently, in our hospital telemedicine consultation is available for emergency room patients needing psychiatric services. We will soon be starting neurologist telemedicine services for acute stroke through a panel of board-certified neurologists available 24/7. We are also looking at developing a program whereby a hospitalist can do a tele-visit with a hospitalized patient in late evening hours, to supplement care being provided by the in-house hospitalist nurse practitioner. Other potential telemedicine services that we are looking at will be for specialist consultations in areas where there is physician shortage. Using telehealth services, smaller communities throughout the country and the world can now receive the expert consultation services of specialists, who are typically only available in big cities or university hospitals.”

This pivot to telemedicine services has been a positive one for responding to the immediate need, and many of these practices will remain in place in the future. “Franciscan Health Michigan City has invested in the latest technology and equipment for tele-visits. We have special devices which physicians can use remotely for patient interview, physical exam, checking lab results, CT scan or X-ray images, and document their findings and treatment plan in the medical record. Moving forward we plan to expand these services in the hospital as well as in an urgent care setting. As a patient sits in front of their computer the doctor will come onto their screen, they can talk, and do a small exam. If that project works, we may expand those services in our urgent care,” he says.

Strack & Van Til Food Market Cares Ensuring that regional residents have safe access to food and supplies is essential to survival during a pandemic. For Stephanie Flynn, store director at Chesterton’s Strack & Van Til Food Market, responding quickly to the changing needs of her customers was crucial and it continues to be of vital importance. “The first thing we did when the pandemic hit was we began sanitizing our grocery carts after every use. We will continue to do this. In fact, we have a specific associate assigned to that task. We also have a sanitizing team who goes around the store to sanitize touch points such as handles on doors for the dairy and frozen departments, handles in the bathrooms, and we installed several hand sanitizing stations throughout the store. We also have our mask program. All customers and associates wear masks while visiting us, and our staff has been trained on how to wear masks properly,” Flynn says.

For customers who prefer not to come into the physical store, Flynn says they have both pickup and delivery programs to meet these needs. “In8

stacart is the company we use for our pickup or delivery program. Our associates know the store the best so they fill the orders, and this has been 100% ideal. Our delivery program, through Instacart, delivers the groceries directly to people’s homes. That service has definitely increased drastically and in fact, we need someone on staff 16 hours a day dedicated to that purpose.”

The variety of items on store shelves has also been affected by the pandemic, but Flynn says they work hard to maintain a sense of normalcy.

“The supply chain has been dramatically impacted in all departments. Our perishables are now back up to where they need to be, but there may be some specialty items that you may not find. Paper towels and cleaning supplies may continue to be in limited supply throughout the coming year. We have discontinued some items to focus on essential items. We focus on our core items and less and less on specialty items, especially obscure varieties and flavors of soda pop, because of the can shortage. When things become available we try to bring it in when we can. Once things start filtering back in we will see it increase little by little.”

GGNET Technologies Continuing Connectivity During COVID For over a decade, GGNET Technologies has been offering a range of services to help small and midsized business leaders grow their business, and to help IT directors meet user expectation while freeing up their time. Tell that to the pandemic. When businesses halted due to COVID, GGNET had to respond to help their clients continue to grow, or even just to sustain.

This meant getting a little creative, says Joe Grossbauer, security analyst for GGNET. “Our response really varies from business to business and individual to individual. Some of our clients have had to just completely slow down.

They can’t do much of anything, and there is little we can do to help them. But others, we can help them scale up in the work they’re doing because they’re on predetermined budgets. Now is a great time for them to do new construction or renovations while the business is closed down, or maybe do an IT upgrade. It really just depends on the client. We can help them to do more remotely, to do business online, connected. We’re definitely getting requests for connectivity, VPN access, and shared-drive access. We’ve been surprisingly steady.”

The Duneland School Corporation

Adapting for the Needs of Duneland’s Students The Duneland School Corporation has, like most other school districts throughout the region, state, and nation, been keenly adaptive to the needs of students, staff, parents, and the community during the pandemic. This means that sometimes the best laid plans have had to be revised as the virus calls the shots. “As expected, there have been challenges associated with opening schools during a pandemic,” said DSC Superintendent Chip Petit during a school board meeting last September.

He credits the teaching staff with the strength, tenacity, and determination to deliver a Duneland education to students.

“Our teachers have put their best foot forward to deliver instruction in two different formats, remote and in-person. And we had widespread teacher participation in professional development during the summer to expand upon instructional strategies used in remote and hybrid environments.”

Duneland School Corporation has been adapting procedures to accommodate students’ needs since the onset of the pandemic. On March 13, 2020, the Porter County schools announced their closure due to COVID; the Duneland Schools made their announcement that very same day at 1 p.m. Just three days later the Duneland School Corporation began meal service, with Grab and Go meals offered to all Duneland students at the Chesterton Middle

School site. This program eventually moved to Chesterton High School parking lot and continued through the summer until the last meal pickup on August 20. On April 2, the State of Indiana stated that all schools would be closed for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year. At that point the DSC decided to continue the distance learning on Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays. On August 5th the Duneland School Corporation recommended that the school board delay the start of the school year from August 12th to August 25th. On Sept.

14th the Duneland School Board affirmed a decision to move from Level 4 to Level 3 of its Reentry Plan, with some modifications beginning Monday, October 5th. This move meant that students who attended class in person would now attend four days a week, rather than on a hybrid model. Others who opted for a fully-remote model could remain remote. This timeline of events is a snapshot of the way that the Duneland School Corporation has adapted to the ever-changing needs of the community during the pandemic.

As the school year continues, and the pandemic continues too, more changes will likely be in store for administration, teachers, staff, students, families, and the entire Duneland community. The Duneland School Corporation has the flexibility, adaptability, and creativity to continue to provide the best solutions for everchanging community needs. The Duneland School Corporation truly is a team working together to weather the storm.

TAKING CARE OF EACH OTHER

The United Way of Porter County

T

he United Way of Porter County supports the residents of Porter County, providing opportunities to have a good life, including a quality education that leads to a stable job, enough income to support a family through retirement, and good health.

Continuing this mission through the trauma of a pandemic can be challenging, to say the least, but CEO and President of United Way of Porter County Kim Olesker says they are pivoting to stay the course.

“On March 12, 2020, we were all clicking along really nicely and life was good. And that for us was the key takeaway, that it takes one disaster to pull the rug out from everybody.

You have competent, qualified professionals out there who were making a great living and now they’re not. It’s always great to help those who are underserved or under the radar but now we had a whole new population of folks who didn’t know how to find help,” says Olesker.

This was an anticipated yet challenging situation. Olesker and her team at the United Way of Porter County jumped into action to find resources for this new population of in-need regional residents. The first step in this approach meant helping to keep people in their homes.

She states, “I reached out to an agency in Indianapolis because I heard there was going to be a surge in mortgage relief. I have members of my staff servicing clients who earn up to $100,000 in household income. They might be above the poverty level, but now they find themselves in a new situation. We are able to really truly help everybody. We fight for everybody in the county regardless of their income level, ethnicity, education—everybody. Our key pivot was to keep people in their homes the best we could.

We know NIPSCO has been very generous on

their collection but all that has come due now.

So we have funded three agencies that help fulfill that need in the county. If we can keep people in their homes it means they don’t have to uproot everything, so that is a key priority for us. Our Indiana United Way fought for us, and Eli Lilly was able to come through with some funding for every county in Indiana. Additionally, we are investing $1 million to help people with their basic needs.”

Clearly, one of those needs is providing food for those who now find their means of access dwindling or dried up. “We knew there were some food deserts in Portage and South Haven and if you don’t have a car you can’t get to Meijer. That can be pretty pricey for folks, so the funding will provide extra food for the food banks to help people get through the next couple of months,” Olesker says. “When the unemployment benefits were pretty healthy, people were able to support the local restaurant establishments, but since unemployment benefits have run out there is a drastic decline in attendance. So we are able to support what our community needs. Our community needs to keep people in their homes, pay their utilities, and connect them to resources.”

But the United Way staff themselves were impacted by the pandemic, which also required a pivot. Olesker explains, “When our office closed down in March, like everyone else did, we invited everyone to weekly Zoom meetings because so many agencies are unsure of what to do. We reached out to shut-ins and Meals on Wheels, contacting isolated seniors who don’t have connection to technology and communication.” That lack of connectivity is really the next area where agencies like the United Way will have to focus. “These residents [shut-ins

and elderly] can’t shift. The emotional and behavioral fallout has been real and tough. The wave of mental health issues is coming. There are a lot of people suffering in silence and that’s going to be our next push—finding these people and bringing them into the fold.”

United Way of Porter County, like many other agencies, saw an urgent need for PPE for first responders and their staff. “We realized that it was essential to protect our front-end folks and first responders, so we tapped into the PPE business and distributed twenty to thirty thousand masks to the first responders. We will continue to have masks to share with teaching professionals, retail for their clients, to keep people safe and protected,” Olesker says.

Staying proactive while, at the same time, constantly being reactive has been the name of the game for the United Way of Porter County, and for all of us during these unusual times,” according to Olesker.. But this is the stuff of the United Way. This is what they were made for. This is why they exist. “We help to stabilize the home and make people feel comfortable when they do have to go to their jobs,” Olesker says. “I’m really worried about the next wave of the pandemic. We rely heavily on the workplace campaign for fundraising. Now there is no workplace, so we rely on the digital footprint.

With an open dialogue and ability to connect, we can help. We don’t want anyone to have to worry about their prescription meds so we can connect folks to resources there. People can’t afford to send kids to afterschool care, or they don’t have a computer, or can’t afford $140 worth of school supplies. My gosh, it’s an interesting time, isn’t it? Just when you think you can breathe, there’s something else that comes.

So we pivot.”
