News Think Twice Campaign launched by DKIT students Mad Youth

in Brief

Mental Health funds

Fine Gael TD for Louth, Peter Fitzpatrick, while speaking on the issue of mental health in Dáil Éireann, said that he will be seeking parity for mental health funding in Co Louth. “At present the Louth Meath area receives €104 per head of population for mental health whilst the national average is €152. “It is simply not right that the people of Louth and Meath do not have the same level of funding for mental health services as the rest of the country. “I believe that each and every citizen should have access to local, specialised and comprehensive mental health service provision that is of the highest standard”, he stated.

A group of fourth year Creative Media students in DKIT have chosen the area of disability and independence as their fourth year group project. The trio is made up of Jean Creegan, Paul Grant and Stephen Trappe and their mission is to create an awareness campaign around able bodied people using disabled toilets and how this is affecting disabled people’s independence. The campaign is called ‘Think Twice’ and according to Jean their research found that disabled people in Co. Louth faced a whole range of problems in everyday life but for the purpose of

this project they focused on the area of misuse of disabled toilets. “We asked members of the Irish Wheelchair Association what their understanding of independence was and what if any barriers they face on a daily basis and we were given a whole range of answers which gave us an idea of the daily struggles they face that some people may take for granted. “The main issues was accessibility whether it be accessing disabled parking spaces, disabled toilets, struggling to get on footpaths which aren’t wheelchair friendly it was clear that there is

a problem in society today and it is affecting people with disabilities independence,” explained Jean. From conducting primary research, a problem that we encountered on a number of occasions was able bodied people taking advantage of disabled toilets. After speaking to members of the Irish Wheelchair Association, they clarified that yes this is an ongoing problem for them. As a group, we hope to create an awareness campaign around able bodied people using disabled toilets and how this is affecting disabled people’s In-

dependence. We hope by using real people real stories that we can influence people’s opinions and stop them from using these facilities. We are going to create different aspects of the campaign including, viral videos, poster campaign, hashtags, and a radio advertisement. We are going to launch these different aspects of the campaign at different stages, to get maximum coverage. Using different social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram we hope that our awareness campaign will reach many people and make a difference,” stated Jean.

Tesco raise funds OVER €4,750 was raised by Tesco stores across Louth last Friday in support of Temple Street’s Great Irish Bake. Between 11am and 6pm, Tesco colleagues and customers baked, bought, ate and sold an

abundance of culinary creations to help raise some much-needed dough for the children’s hospital. All 148 stores countrywide took part to host Ireland’s Largest Bake Sale and together raised over €155,000 in just

seven hours. All of the money raised in stores on the day will be used to buy Pump Systems for the wards at Temple Street Hospital which make giving fluids and medicine to patients that little bit easier.
