WORK is set to begin in earnest in the next couple of months on the long overdue re-development of Carroll Village Shopping Centre. According to Castle Entertainment Centre Limited who have bought the site where the Carroll Village Shopping Centre used to operate from the centre is ‘poised for a major re-development aimed at creating a dynamic retail destination that will serve as a catalyst for economic growth, job creation, and community renewal’.
Speaking to the Dundalk Leader a spokesperson for the new owners said that the main focus right now is to get at least three or four large retailers on
board with this development and the next few months will be spent re-developing the site and taking enquiries from any retailers interested in trading in the new development. A statement from the group said the new project would breath new life into the town centre. This development will be separate to the construction of a Primary Care Centre at the former Superquinn building in Carroll Village. That project got the green light last August from An Bord Pleanála. That proposal is for the partial demolition of the existing shopping centre building and the construction of a 4-storey primary care centre, including a GP surgery, pharmacy and HSE accommodation.

LOUTH 2-8
CARLOW 1-7
THE excellent Kate Flood helped herself to a personal haul of 2-3 at TEG Cusack Park in Mullingar on Sunday as Louth held off a spirited display from Carlow to successfully defend their TG4 Leinster Junior Football Championship title.
The reigning champions (who also defeated Carlow in last year’s decider) moved two points clear in the early moments of this encounter with consecutive scores from Eimear Byrne and Flood.
While Carlow opened their account through a Clíodhna Ní Shé free on nine minutes, Louth fired back with additional contributions from the dynamic attacking duo of Flood and Byrne.
Even though Elaine Ware bagged a second point for Carlow just shy of the first-quarter mark, three scores on the bounce from Laura Collins, team captain Aine Breen and Flood ensured Louth brought a 0-7 to 0-2 advantage into the interval.
Kevin Larkin’s side maintained their firm grip on the proceedings with a powerful point on the run from Ceire Nolan on the restart, before Flood calmly struck home on 35 minutes for her first goal of the game.
Although Aoibhin Webb added a white flag effort for Carlow at an awkward angle, excellent approach work from Byrne paved the way for Flood to the net for a second time in the 38th minute.
This left Carlow with a mountain to climb for the remainder of the action, but the determined Barrowsiders gave themselves a fighting chance either side of the thirdquarter mark. Their challenge was rejuvenated when Ware flicked the ball to the net after an attempt at a point rebounded off the post on 43 minutes and the gap was suddenly down to a manageable six in the wake of Ní Shé adding a quickfire brace.
Aibha Kiernan and the evergreen Edel Hayden were also on target to leave just four points between the teams with just
eight minutes of normal time remaining.
The pressure was certainly being ramped up on Louth, but - reminiscent of their men’s team in last weekend’s historic Leinster senior football championship triumph over Meath - the Wee County held onto possession for large stretches in the closing moments and ultimately came away with their eighth provincial junior crown.
Scorers – Louth: K Flood 2-3, E Byrne 0-2, Á Breen, L Collins, C Nolan 0-1 each.
LOUTH: R Lambe Fagan; S Matthews, E Hand, H Lambe Sally; L Byrne, S McLaughlin, A Russell; R Beirth, Á Breen; L White, E Byrne, E Murray; K Flood, L Collins, C Nolan. Subs: A Halligan for White (46), M Rooney for Collins (50), G McCrave for Lambe Sally (53).
All three men have since been charged in connection the incident and were due to appear before Drogheda District Court on Monday morning last (19th May) at 10.30am. Investigations ongoing.

MUIRHEVNAMOR FC have recognised the vast contributions of a local family to the club by naming their ground Gills Park. The naming ceremony took place last Sunday in what will now be known as Gils Park.
Muirhevnamor estate itself is celebrating its 50th year anniversary, and for 49 years, the heartbeat of the estate has always been its highly successful football club. The club was established in 1976, and one of the founding members was Pat Gill. Pats son Martin, otherwise known as Gillser, was a part of that very first team as a player. From day one, Gillser was a part of the club in every capacity. Player, coach, manager, committee member, and chairperson. Gillser and his families presence within the club has been a constant year in and year out. This included his sons Martin, Paddy, Jason, and Mark taking up various roles over the years within the club.
Gillser pride and joy was always maintaining
the clubs pitch and grounds. The club boasts one of the finest playing surfaces in Louth. This is not something that can be achieved overnight. It requires dedication, patience, and tender loving care. All attributes that Martin possessed and brought to the club day in and day out. Muirhevnamor FC feels it is a fitting tribute to name their pitch after Martin and the Gill family.
To honour the occasion
and Martins unfortunate sudden passing in December 2024, the newly named Gill Park hosted an in-house match between the clubs’ current u18s vs a Muirhevnamor winter league selection. The Winter League selection team consisted of players who have played for Gillser over the years. It was a who’s who of the clubs legendary players taking part on the day. For decades, Muirhevnamor FC dominated the winter
league with Martin at the helm.
It was an amazing spectacle and a day that will be remembered by everyone in attendance. The club would like to thank Martins beloved wife, Joanie, for sharing Gillser with us all these years. As the old saying goes behind, every great man is a great woman. Muirhevnamor FC wishes to thank you, Gillser, and the entire Gill family for your contributions to the club.

THE voluntary committee which has organised and run the Dundalk St Patrick’s Day parade for the last eight years has announced that it is standing down.
The decision was made earlier this year but the committee had waited until all outstanding invoices were paid and the accounts had been properly completed.
The committee, which comprises Cllr. Maeve Yore, Conor Keelan, Deputy Ruairí Ó Murchú, Hanna McDonnell, Shane Mc-
Bride, Dagan Fleming, Maria O’Toole, David Minto and Anne Campbell, said they were pleased with the rejuvenation of the parade in Dundalk over the last number of years, but ‘the constant struggle’ to secure funding has left them ‘drained’.
In a statement, the committee said: ‘Since the previous parade committee announced they were standing down in 2018, we have worked hard to ensure that St Patrick’s Day in Dundalk was done in the best way possible.
‘We put on parades
in 2018 and 2019 and we were on the cusp of putting on a great event in 2020, but Covid hit.
And while that was hugely disappointing, we were able to pivot the following year and create the ‘This is Dundalk’ video that was released online for St Patrick’s Day in 2021 and which starred Alvaro Lucchesi.
‘Concerns about a new variant of Covid 19 at the end of 2021 lead to the cancellation of the Dundalk parade in 2022, but we came back in 2023, 2024 and 2025 and we believe we
enhanced the offering over those years.
‘This year, we saw incredible numbers of people on the streets of Dundalk and we had record numbers of community, sporting and voluntary groups who put on a great event in 2025. And it is to those groups, who take part in the parade, that we thank first. Without them, there would be no parade at all.
‘In addition, we are very grateful to all our sponsors over the years, particularly Dundalk Credit Union who were incredible this year for
stepping in with additional funding to ensure that the parade was able to happen in 2025.
‘To everyone who took part, who helped us, who encouraged us to continue even when the going got tough, we are extremely grateful for the help and support given to us as volunteers.
‘Earlier this year, we took the decision as a committee to stand down after the 2025 parade because much of our work throughout the year was focused on just trying to get funding together to make the parade happen. Unfortunately, that became an almost constant struggle that left us drained and we are no longer able to continue.
‘We are proud of the work that we have done over the years and the legacy that remains.’
CLLR John Reilly has written to Córas Iompair Éireann (CIÉ), urging a review of the current policy that mandates school bus drivers to retire at the age of 70. With bus companies across the country facing severe recruitment challenges, Cllr Reilly has proposed extending the compulsory retirement age to 72, provided that drivers pass a suitable medical examination.
“A significant portion of our current school bus drivers are semi-retired individuals who bring years of valuable experience to the job,” said Cllr Reilly.
“Given the chronic shortage of drivers, it makes no sense to enforce a blanket retirement at 70 when many of these drivers are more than capable of continuing in their roles safely.”
qualified bus drivers, Cllr Reilly described the proposal as a “common-sense compromise” that would help alleviate immediate pressures on school transport services while maintaining the highest standards of safety.
“With appropriate medical assessments in place, extending the retirement age to 72 would be a practical and safe measure that acknowledges the reality of our current driver shortages,” he added. “It’s a modest but meaningful step to support our communities and ensure the continued reliability of school transport.”
Highlighting the nationwide struggle to recruit and retain
“Bus companies have the vehicles and the capacity to accommodate more routes and services, but the main issue is the chronic lack of qualified drivers,” he explained.
Cllr Reilly has called on CIÉ and the Department of Transport to seriously consider this proposal as part of broader efforts to address the school bus driver shortage.
A SPECIAL show in memory of young Dundalk musician Ranier Gaspar will take place on Saturday May 31st
Twenty year old Ranier passed away at his home in Langfield, on the Dublin Road in Dundalk on April 8th following an asthma attack. He was a very talented musician and very popular amongst the local music scene in Dundalk. He was a regular visitor to the Spirit Store both socially and also through his band imBau who played a number of gigs in the venue.
“The Spirit Store was a place truly loved by Ranier, and his energy will be with us all,” stated the Spirit Store via a post on their website. “There will be two stages with the music starting from 5pm, and heading upstairs from 8pm.”
A number of local bands will play on the evening including Just Mustard, Negro Impacto, Jinx Lennon, Jamie Muckno, Rowan Murphy, Mark Durnin as well as Ranier’s band imBau. All proceeds from the event will go to the Gaspar family.
Ranier’s old bandmates released a heartfelt statement in tribute of their friend and bandmate.
“There are certain people in this world who, upon meeting it becomes clear that your life will never be the same without them,”
they wrote. “This was true for our beautiful friend Ranier Gaspar.
“Being younger than the rest of us, we saw him as our little brother. Despite his age, his musical wisdom out shadowed all of us combined. He was our muse and inspired us each and every day. Not just with his talent, but the gentle, kind and endearing way he approached life.
“It’s strange to try and convey what it means to be in a band to those who have never been in one. We shared a soul, bounded by a love and trust in each other. We wouldn’t go more than a few hours without speaking, and we could always rely on one another to see
it through even the toughest days.
“The name of our band - imBau - is more of an expression, or mantra to live by than it is a name. ‘Under Construction’ represents The Becoming, the constant process of growing into one’s potential. It was through our collective will that we mutually lived this every day.
“Ranier was the glue that brought us all together. He made us whole and around him this amazing little community formed in Dundalk, a place where we previously wanted to get out of was now rekindled with a true sense of connection.
“The Spirit Store was like a second home for us, we are so grateful to Derek, Evan, Jack, the bar staff and everybody else who welcomed us and allowed us to find our feet on the stage. It is here we return for a day and night of celebration. It has filled our hearts with so much love to see the outpouring of support from everyone in the Dundalk scene and we can’t thank you enough for bringing us all together for a truly special night.
“We love you Ranier, you will always be our wee rockstar. We can’t wait to share the stage with you one last time. Goodbye, and thanks for being our friend.”
Tickets for the Main Venue show at the Spirit Store on May 31, are available from the Spirit Store..

In lvoing memory of Mary (Delia) Boyle, Railway Terrace, Dundalk.
A light from our family gone,
A voice we love is stilled.
A place is vacant in the home,

Has finally made her sleep.
After a lifetime of her love and joy, And music to fill our ears,
God leaves these wondrous memories,
To help us through the years.
