GARDAÍ in Dundalk are appealing for information relating to the hijacking of a taxi in Dundalk on Monday evening.
At around 10:40pm, a taxi driver from Fives Taxis on Francis St. was assisting a disabled passenger into his car just outside McGeoughs Bar at Roden Place. The driver helped the passenger, who had only one leg, into the car before putting his wheelchair in the boot. When he got back into the driver’s seat, the door was opened by a masked man brandishing what he believed to be a firearm, who ordered him out of the car.
The suspect made off in
the taxi and stopped half a kilometre away, pulling the passenger out of the car and throwing him to the side of the road. No injuries were sustained.
The suspect is described as being of average height, heavy set and he was wearing a black money hat.
Gardaí are appealing to anyone who was in Dundalk town, Roden Place, Francis Street or Jocelyn Street areas between 10:00pm and 10;50pm and who may have witnessed this incident or with information on the whereabouts of a silver Skoda Superb taxi with a 131-KE registration plate, to come forward.

A MEMORIAL to 15 RAF airmen who were killed in a crash in the Cooley Mountains, has been returned after a social media campaign by the Cooley Peninsula Community Alert Group. The memorial included parts of the landing gear from a World War 2 US bomber plane, which lay on the ground beside a plaque as well as a model of the bomber plane engraved with the names of the 15 men who died. The crash happened on March 16th 1942 when a US military aircraft crashed on the Cooley mountains killing 15 of the 19 young men on board. It remains the worst on-land air disaster in Irish history.
Earlier this month the three steel parts which were part of the landing gear of the original bomber plane went missing having been on the mountainside untouched for over 80 years
previously close to where the crash occurred. The site is near the peak of Slieve na Glogh, (the mountain on your left just past Fitzpatrick’s Restaurant on the Carlingford road — along the forest wall of the Annaloughan Upper Loop in Rockmarshal).
The heavy steel parts were removed from the site earlier this month and are believed to have been dragged down a mountain trail by a quad. The plane’s journey began in Egypt and
was destined for England but is believed to have got lost in the fog and crashed into the mountain. One of the men who died that night was Paul Morey, a 22-yearold wireless operator. His sister Cynthia, now 96, still messages the memorial team and treasures the photos sent to her through the seasons.
The landing gear was last seen on the 12th of May on the mountain and locals believe it was stolen either on the 13th or 14th of May. There
was widespread disgust and anger that such an important monument and a tribute to the brave soldiers was stolen from where it had lain for over 80 years. A post from the popular Cooley Peninsula Community Alert Group was put up last Thursday (22nd May) pleading with whoever stole the landing gear to return it.
“The original landing gear from the crash site has been stolen. It had lain undisturbed for over 80 years. Track marks
in the bog show it was dragged away — likely taken for scrap. The new memorial still stands — for now — but locals fear it could be next. “This isn’t just theft,” said one volunteer “It’s a violation of memory. It’s stealing from the dead.”
We’re asking for help:
• If you’ve walked the Annaloughan Loop recently and saw anything unusual — please contact Gardaí.
• If you work in scrap, metalwork, or haulage — ask around quietly if
anything’s been offered. This isn’t just local history. It’s living memory — held onto by one surviving sister and a community who refuse to forget. Let’s bring the landing gear home. Local Gardaí have been contacted. We’re not looking for punishment — we just want the gear returned. Leave it back at the mountain gate. It’s not worth €100 in scrap — but it’s priceless in history.” That plea went viral with people as far away
as America sharing the message as word quickly spread that the landing gear had been stolen. Early on Friday morning the landing gear had been returned at the bottom of the mountain.
According to Michael Muckian who runs the Cooley Peninsula Community Alert Page there is a sense of relief and delight locally that this important part of local history has been returned.
“We’re amazed at how quickly the story spread and we had RTE news
up here putting together a story for the news bulletin last weekend. We weren’t interested in pointing fingers, we just wanted the landing gear returned and thankfully whoever stole it saw sense in the end. We’ve temporarily moved the gear to a safe location and the plan is to have it restored and secured back at the memorial site which will be easier said than done. These things are extremely heavy and they have to be brought up a very steep mountain which is going to prove very challenging. The main thing though is that we have them back in our possession and local farmers will now formulate a plan to get them back on to the mountain and ensure they are not taken again. This is a part of our history and it’s about remembering those 15 men who perished that night and we are grateful that we have got the landing gear back,” stated Michael.

THIS Sunday, June 1st,
Stuart Rutherford will run a half marathon around the streets of Dundalk. After that he will attempt to run a half marathon every day for another 555 days consecutively until Tuesday December 8th 2026. If successful he will have run a total of 11731.6kms (7289 miles) by the end of his
stamina sapping challenge. The father-of-one, living in Dundalk, is raising money for two charities close to his heart by attempting to break the current world record for most consecutive half marathon’s run in a row. The current record stands at 555 and is held by Iranian man Alireza Safaeian (Iran) who achieved his feat by running for
555 consecutive days in Antalya, Turkey, from 26 December 2022 to 2 July 2024.
Stuart, originally from Scotland but now living in Dundalk and working in Lidl believes he has the mental strength needed to complete the mammoth task but admits that he will need some luck to get the job done. Staying fit and healthy for over a year and a half is no guarantee but the avid runner says he will do everything in his power to run a half marathon every single day to help raise money for the two charities close to his heart.
The Lily Foundation is a charity which supports people affected by mitochondrial disease. Mitochondrial Disease is a very rare and complex condition which often lead to severe physical and developmental challenges. There is currently no cure.
According to Stuart he will run in memory of his friends daughter, Newcastle native Bethaney Patterson who died from Mitochondrial Disease just over two years ago. He will also run for Down Syndrome Ireland and his aim is to raise €250k for both charities.
“I’m originally from Glasgow but I’m living in Dundalk now and working in Lidl,” said Stuart.
I’m raising for The Lily Foundation in loving memory of Bethaney “ Betty “ Patterson and I will be attempting to raise €250k between now and the end of my world record
attempt for that charity. Simultaneously I’m raising money for Down Syndrome Ireland and again I’m hoping to raise €250k for them also.
“I’ll be running a half marathon distance 21.1 km / 13.1 miles every day for 555 consecutive days to equal, 556 to break. You can guess which number I’m hitting. The primary reason I’m doing this is to try and raise significant money for both of the charities I mentioned. Secondly, I want the world record to put up in my daughter Saoirse’s bedroom wall. She’ll be six by the time I hopefully break the record and I want her to know that once upon a time, Daddy did something pretty cool and to realise that nothing is impossible.
“There will also be a huge sense of self satisfaction if I can do this and it will be pretty cool to know that I am in the Guinness Book of World Records. For me the easy part of this is running and I am so
excited that my starting date is now only a few days away. I’m calling this challenge ‘No Plan B’ because there is no Plan B. I have to do a half marathon every day. There can be no excuses or no alternatives. If I had a plan B in my head and I was feeling rubbish or tempted not to run I might go for that option but the beauty of this challenge is it is very simple. Do a half marathon every single day for 556 consecutive days or else I have failed. This will be 2 to 2 and a half hours of my life every day and if anybody out there sees me out running feel free to run alongside me for 1 or 2k or whatever you want. I know I’m going to need a bit of luck with regards to staying fit and healthy but as I said, for me the running bit is easy. It’s the organising links for donations and getting the word out there that will be the biggest challenge. I’m hoping the people of Dundalk can get behind me and between us we can raise lots of money
for two great charities,” stated Stuart.
“The world record attempt starts at 16:30 this Sunday (1st June) and every day I have to document my run and post a pic/video of myself with a copy of a newspaper showing the date on the front page. We’re just days away from getting started now so bring it on,” stated Stuart.
You can follow Stuart’s journey on facebook and Instagram and if you are in a position to donate to his chosen charities you can do so at https://www.idonate. ie/fundraiser/StuartRutherford3 (Down Syndrome Ireland) and https://www.justgiving.com/page/stuartrutherford-4?utm_ medium=FR&utm_ source=CL (Lily Foundation). Stuart’s world record attempt begins this Sunday at 4:30 when he begins at Hill St. Dundalk, heading towards Blackrock, back towards the Red Barns Road, down the Navvy Bank and back into town.
THE establishment of community safety partnerships, which will replace the Joint Policing Committees (JPCs), is to happen ‘very soon’ Justice Minster Jim O’Callaghan has told Dundalk TD Ruairí Ó Murchú.
The Sinn Féin TD raised the delay in establishing the partnerships with the justice minister in Leinster House last week and while he welcomed the news that they are to be set up ‘very soon’, he said there remained ‘questions about the membership, especially about which elected representatives will be on it and how they will operate and who can be the chairs’.
Deputy Ó Murchú said: “The biggest issue is the timeline. If the Minister has any proposal to make changes, what are they and how does he propose they will happen? Could we not even have the possibility of the JPC operating in the interim?”
Minister O’Callaghan said: “I hope to sign regulations providing for the rules and mechanisms for these community safety partnerships in the very
near future. I do not want to give the Deputy a specific date.
“I have also signed into law the order required for the purpose of establishing the steering group that will be necessary to evaluate these new community partnerships. They will enable individuals who are local representatives of the community to talk to gardaí and agencies like the HSE, Tusla and Cuan in or-
der to ensure there is a proper discussion of the important information that needs to be communicated in respect of a local community.
“Over the course of preparing the necessary regulations to establish the partnerships, it became clear they would have to elect a chair from within their membership”.
In response, Deputy Ó Murchú said: “The main thing is that ‘very soon’ needs to be very soon. Would it be possible to have the JPCs operating in the short term?
“We all spoke about the loss of Garda Kevin Flatley. We had a garda in Ardee on routine patrol who was injured in the last while and we know of the huge issues there are with crime.
“Great strides have been made with organised crime recently in my constituency, but we need to do a lot more. It is necessary we have a fit-for-purpose means of engagement with the other statutory agencies along with the Garda, because sometimes the Garda ends up carrying the can for the HSE and others”.
CLLR Reilly has tabled a motion for the May meeting of Louth County Council, calling for a feasibility study on converting a disused piece of wasteland at Fatima into a safe and usable recreational space for the local community.
The proposal follows complaints from residents about anti-social behaviour on the site — in particular, the illegal use of scrambler bikes — and the disruption this is causing to nearby schools and a local nursing home.
“I was contacted by concerned residents about scrambler bikes being used on the land, creating not only a danger but serious noise pollution,” said Cllr Reilly “This land is just metres from a nursing home where
elderly residents are being subjected to constant noise and disruption. It’s unacceptable, and it needs to be addressed.”
Cllr Reilly believes the site has the potential to become a vital community asset, especially if it is developed with local schools in mind. With three schools located
nearby, the councillor suggests that a shared green space could allow schools to reallocate some of their own land for safer car and bus drop-off areas. Currently the two secondary school St Louis and the De La Salle College have no pick up facilities for school buses only the public road.
“At present, the area faces major issues with traffic congestion and road safety at school times,” said Cllr Reilly “The Council’s attempts to encourage walking and cycling have not worked in this location,.We need practical, deliverable solutions — and this is one of them.”
The motion, to be debated at the Council’s May meeting, calls for a full feasibility study examining potential recreational uses for the land, including layout options, costs, and the benefits to schools and the wider Fatima community.
“This is an opportunity to turn a neglected and problematic space into something safe, positive, and community-driven,” said Cllr Reilly.
CARLINGFORD gym-
nast Estella Volkoff showed that her dreams of competing at the 2028 LA Olympics might just become a reality with the 14-year-old being crowned national champion in Dublin last week. She competed in the National Championships at the National Indoor Arena in Dublin and took home the title in the Junior Women’s All-Around as well as taken home gold on the balance beam. For good measure she also took home a silver on the uneven bars in the apparatus event. Her balance beam routine was so good it earned her the highest score from anybody in either he junior or senior competitions.
Estrella began her gymnastics journey at just three years of age and she trains rigorously at DP Gymnastics Club in Balbriggan, dedicating 25 hours a week and between 5 and seven days
a week to her craft. Her proud parents Alex and Kristene were in Dublin to watch their daughter become a National Champion and according to Alex his daughter’s big dream is to represent Ireland at the 2028 Olympics.
“She loves training and everything about gymnastics and her big dream is to represent her country at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. She has now established herself as
the best gymnast in Ireland in her age group and last month she also won a big competition in Oslo so she is performing brilliantly recently. She works very hard and deserves all her success. There are only six junior girls in Ireland who hold a Federation International Gymnastics license and Estella is one of them.
“She will be 17 when the next Olympics come around and she believes that if she keeps on work-
ing hard she can achieve her dream of being there. She trains under the watchful eye of her head coach and DP Balbriggan club owner Marissa Duffy and although it’s a tough schedule she loves every minute of it.
“Gymnastics is a fast growing sport in Ireland but we haven’t had too many Irish gymnasts qualify for the Olympic Games. Estella is determined to add her name to that small list in three years time,” stated Alex.

On Sunday Brendan lifted the G4D trophy for the second time after a one-overpar final round of 73 for a 54-hole total of three-over 219 and a four-stroke win over Lachlan Wood from Australia. He could
“I played extremely solid all week. My game is in fantastic shape. It’s such a tight course. You can’t go in trouble and I stayed out of trouble a lot over the three days.
I’m quite proud of my performance today.
I was very, very solid and I know Lachlan went on a really good run on the front nine to put a bit of pressure on.
“So I stuck to my guns and kept hitting greens and fairways trying to make par. That’s what I did. I had a wee slip-up on the 17th, a hole which hasn’t been good to me in the past. But
Brendan was born with Ellis-van Creveld syndrome, an inherited disorder that results in short stature and short limbs. The talented Louth Vilage man has been making his mark around the world for several years with high-profile wins on the EDGA Tour while showcasing disability golf to a wider audience.
Brendan, who honed his skills as a youngster playing pitch and putt in Channonrock has become one of the very best disability golfers in the world in recent years, collecting victories at the 2021 Cazoo Disability Open, 2021 ISPS HANDA World Disability Invitational, 2019 German Disabled Open, the 2019 G-Golf Knockout and the 2019 EDGA Scottish Open and now two G4D Major Trophies (2023 and 2025).

DUNDALK Order of Malta Ambulance Corps held a party last Monday for all their young cadets who competed in the regional competition recently.
Cadets took part in a competition which saw them utilize the skills they’ve learned to date including CPR. They were also given various scenarios where they were tasked to use their first aid skills to resolve the situation.
According to cadet leader Gemma Byrne all the cadets performed brilliantly at the regional competition.
“We held a wee party for them in the Order of Malta hall to acknowledge the great work they done at the regional competition. We had a couple of first place finishes and medals for second place and everybody who took part did fantastic. We meet up every Monday evening between 6-7:30 and we have in or around fourteen young cadets who we train each week.
“We give them important first aid skills which they can then bring back to their communities and share their knowledge with family and friends. Our cadets are actively involved in the community helping the elderly and they also attend first aid “duties” with members of the senior units at events such as GAA matches, fun days, athletics and other sporting activities.
“We find the training takes them out of their shell and gives them skills which could potentially save someone’s life. We have had a young cadet actually perform CPR on their grandparent before which probably saved their life.
“We are always on the lookout for new members be that cadets or seniors and if anybody is interested they can email Dundalk@orderofmalta. ie or phone 0852660895 (Seniors) or dundalkcadets@orderofmalta.ie or phone 0851273103 (Cadets),” explained Gemma.

In last week’s Dundalk Leader Quiz, question 5 read “Which recently closed Dundalk pub is said to be built on the site of Mortimer’s Castle where it is stated that Edward the Bruce was declared King of Ireland on May 1 1316?” We would like to clarify that while McCourts Bar is up for sale, it is still trading and open for business as usual. Apologies for the error.

We were delighted to welcome back past pupil Kelly Matthews (ATG Europe Technical Programme Leader) as our guest of honour. Kelly spoke about her time in the College, gave a fascinating account of her work in aeronautical and aerospace engineering and offered valuable advice to students for the future.

Well done also to Andrew Rosbotham, who was awarded the MEAS prize for outstanding contribution to college life.
