DAWN

ED LETTER

This winter, DuJour showcases Academy, Emmy and Golden Globe Award–winning actress Laura Dern. Victor Demarchelier shot stunning and sexy images of Dern at a modern Tribeca penthouse. In the spread, Dern wears resort looks from Tom Ford, Gucci, Altuzarra and Thom Browne.

This winter, Dern stars in the Netflix film Jay Kelly, directed by Noah Baumbach and starring George Clooney as a Hollywood leading man at a crossroads. In the film, Dern plays the actor’s longtime publicist who embarks on a European adventure with him. Next, she’ll be seen opposite Will Arnett in the Searchlight Pictures film Is This Thing On?, directed by Bradley Cooper, playing Arnett’s estranged wife who is coping with their breakup and confronting the sacrifices she made for their family. She stars in the second season of Palm Royale opposite Leslie Bibb and Kristen Wiig. The show about high society in Palm Beach is now streaming on Apple TV.

Christina Ohly Evans enjoyed a California road trip, Heidi Mitchell traveled to Indonesia for a boat trip on Dunia Baru, one of the last traditional Indonesian phinisi sailing boats, and Marshall Heyman went to Florence for our travel section.

We are so fortunate to have worked with talented pros like Demarchelier and Emilio Madrid on photo shoots that yielded stunning original visuals for our issue. We hope you enjoy reading this issue as much as we did producing it.

BEHIND THE SCENES

OLOFT inTranslation

A Tribeca floor-through apartment with old-world charm and modern design

ld-world craftsmanship meets downtown chic at this full-floor 4,781-square-foot apartment at a world class location. Through a key-locked elevator and steel-clad door, enter the expansive living and dining area warmed by cascading light through eight oversized windows and a wood-burning fireplace. A light-filled study, which could easily be converted to an en-suite fourth bedroom, bookends the entertaining space. At the heart of the apartment is the magnificent

kitchen, equipped with two Miele dishwashers and Viking appliances.

The expansive layout is perfect for both entertaining and everyday living, with high ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows and an abundance of natural light. Perfectly designed for those who enjoy entertaining, the living quarters are an isolated sanctuary. The open-concept living and dining areas seamlessly flow into the state-of-the-art kitchen with custom cabinetry. Upstairs, the spacious primary suite delivers a walk-in closet on either side.

Uniquely designed with thoughtful details, the primary bathroom features two sinks divided by a glass-enclosed shower and a standalone bathtub. Off the primary suite living space is a massive private terrace.

In 2001, 45 Walker Street (built in 1888) was converted to residential condominiums by design firm Platt Byard Dovell. With seven floors and only six lofts, the boutique condominium offers a virtual doorman with a security video intercom and two large private storage units that come with the apartment. 45walkerstph.com

CLOCKWISE FROM LEFT: The great room of the penthouse; the kitchen; the primary bedroom; and the private terrace

This winter, DuJour showcases Academy Award–winning actress Laura Dern. Victor Demarchelier shot stunning and sexy images of Dern in a lavish penthouse at 45 Walker Street in Tribeca. In the spread, she dons the best of the season’s resort looks from Loewe and Giorgio Armani to Max Mara and Dolce & Gabbana.

This winter, Dern has three buzzy projects. First up is Netflix’s film Jay Kelly, directed by Noah Baumbach and starring George Clooney as a Hollywood leading man at a crossroads. In the film, Dern plays the actor’s longtime publicist who embarks on a European adventure with him. Next, she’ll be seen opposite Will Arnett in Bradley Cooper’s film Is This Thing On? playing Arnett’s estranged wife who is coping with their breakup and confronting the sacrifices she made for their family. I can already hear the awards buzz. Recently released is the second season of Apple TV’s series Palm Royale, about high society in Palm Beach, in which Dern stars opposite Leslie Bibb and Kristen Wiig.

This book is the ultimate source for the latest and greatest in style, beauty, culture, design, travel and more. THE

SPY Games

The return of Fendi’s It bag for the brand’s centennial, now in three sizes

True icons never fade—they simply wait for their next spotlight. In celebration of its centennial, Fendi has brought back its iconic Spy bag in three sizes: regular, small and mini. Born from the creative spirit of Silvia Venturini Fendi, the Spy bag was originally launched in 2005 and quickly became a fashion favorite carried by everyone from Beyoncé to Sarah Jessica Parker.

Crafted in sumptuous, supple leather, the Spy bag is now available in an expanded range of colors from black to shades of brown, mint green, neutrals and bright red. There is also a calfskin version with ponyhair effect and the brand’s Leo animalier print. The bag’s name comes from its secretive attitude, with a hidden pocket concealed under the flap that can be opened through a disguised button. “I liked the idea of the

secret compartment, because a bag is a place where you keep your most intimate belongings,” says Venturini Fendi. “It’s an extension of yourself. If you open a bag and see what’s inside, you can read a person. I like that there might be something you’d want to keep just for you; that’s why I conceived the hidden pocket.”

The Spy bag’s revival marks a full-circle moment, bridging the glamour of the early aughts with the sophistication of today’s luxury consumer. “The Spy bag was always about freedom and femininity,” Venturini Fendi has said. “It represents a woman who is in control of her world—but she also enjoys a little mystery.” As the bag once again graces the arms of editors, collectors and celebrities alike, it’s clear: The Spy bag never truly left. It simply waited for the world to catch up to its intrigue once more.

The Annals of Annie

Annie Leibovitz debuts a two-volume set of photographs of female subjects from 1993 to now

Annie Leibovitz: Women (Phaidon) pairs Leibovitz’s 1999 book, Women—back in print for the first time in many years—with a brand-new volume of photographs made from 2000 to the present. Susan Sontag’s classic essay for the 1999 book is joined by new texts by Gloria Steinem, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and a dedication from Leibovitz herself. The two-volume set of more than 250 images offers an extraordinary 30-plus-year retrospective of Leibovitz’s portraits of women: dancers, actors, astronauts, artists, politicians, farmers, writers, CEOs, philanthropists, soldiers, musicians, athletes, socialites and scientists. The subjects range in age from 13 to 91 and were photographed in over 90 locations around the world. Global superstars such as Billie Eilish, Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift appear alongside activist Jane Goodall, dancer Twyla Tharp and writers Toni Morrison, Maya Angelou and Joan Didion.

Women are documented at home, at work and everywhere in between: Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace, Shonda Rhimes on set, Renée Fleming at the Metropolitan Opera House, Ketanji Brown Jackson at court, Mickalene Thomas and Dana Schultz in their studios and Katy Ledecky in a Maryland pool. More than a book or a series, it is an essential visual record of women at a moment when revisiting the canon of groundbreaking women has never been more urgent.

Handsome CANYON

A neoclassical-inspired Nichols Canyon home leans into quiet luxury, calm order and subtle drama

BY NILS

Above the Sunset Strip in L.A.’s Nichols Canyon and surrounded by mature trees and layered canyon views sits a neoclassical-inspired home reconfigured by interior designers Amanda Leigh and Taylor Hahn of House of Rolison.

“The interior felt disjointed, with conflicting materials and styles,” explains Hahn. “We resolved that by enforcing a disciplined, continuous material story—warm whites, polished nickel, wood tones and natural stone—so that every junction, transition and detail felt intentional. Preservation and reinvention had to go hand in hand, holding on to meaningful character while raising the home to contemporary expectations.” The neoclassical architecture was interpreted through a contemporary lens to deliver something light, clean and tailored for modern living.

With its generous proportions, natural light and connection to the surrounding landscape, the home has a sense of balance and craftsmanship with thoughtful sightlines and quality

millwork that grounds the space. “Even when it needed work, it had charm and integrity,” says Leigh. “We wanted to preserve that feeling while elevating it in a way that felt timeless. Updates like custom doors, harmonized hardware, layered lighting schemes, refined stone and tile pairings and a unified material vocabulary sought to reestablish cohesion where previous updates had fractured the design narrative.” The duo sought to restore and polish what made the home special in the first place, not overdesign. “The result is a residence that feels architectural, comfortable and quietly luxurious. It reflects the kind of restraint and balance that we are always drawn to in our work,” says Leigh.

There is a quiet formality to the architecture that was softened with natural texture and a restrained palette. “The result feels refined and collected but still very livable,” says Hahn. “Nichols Canyon has this calm, cinematic energy, with filtered sunlight, greenery and privacy that give it an old Hollywood feeling. We wanted the interiors to reflect that same rhythm of calm and elegance.” ■

MAGNUM OPUS

New York City firm Studio Sofield showcases its designs in a new book

Studio Sofield Works (Rizzoli) is the first book from the New York City firm that has created homes, retail experiences, hospitality and multistory apartment towers for nearly four decades. Studio Sofield founder William Sofield and vice president Emma O’Neill give readers a visual treat through projects including homes for designers such as Ralph Lauren’s Japanese-inspired estate in Montauk and Tom Ford’s homes around the world. Sofield has designed over 1,000 retail stores in his career, including for Gucci, Harry Winston, Tom Ford, Bottega Veneta and Yves Saint Laurent. As Ford writes in his foreword, “I always imagine that I am not going to sell a house, buy another and then go through what can be an exhaustive exercise in creating a new home, but I’m afraid that I am addicted to houses. I am also addicted to Bill and Emma.”

Sofield has also created memorable homes for art world power couples Jack Bankowsky and Matthew Marks and the late Brice Marden and his wife Helen and residential buildings including Steinway Hall Tower at 111 West 57th Street and 135 East 79th Street. He is currently transforming the iconic Flatiron Building into apartments. In the hospitality world, Sofield masterminded memorable interiors for the Soho Grand Hotel and Zero Bond, both in New York City.

Relais & Châteaux is offering bespoke North American itineraries that invite guests to hit the road

The Route du Bonheur (“Road of Happiness”) is a foundational part of the Relais & Châteaux Association, a concept that began in 1954 when the group’s eight original hotel and restaurant properties collectively created a road trip itinerary from Paris to Nice. Fast-forward and there are now 154 Routes du Bonheur all over the world, with many of the most interesting, sumptuous tours found in North America.

Each of the highly customizable itineraries offers something rare and exclusive—a visit to the most sought-after private winery, an impossible-to-book table at The French Laundry in Napa,

cooking lessons with a Michelin-starred maestro—and because they involve hotels and restaurants that work together, trips are full of varied yet sumptuous lodgings and outstanding cuisine and are the perfect way to immerse oneself in a particular region.

One such itinerary—Napa Valley Wine Country and San Francisco—is a prime example of how guests can flow seamlessly from one kind of hotel property to another, with house cars provided, and sample extraordinary wines, spa treatments and meals galore. This particular road trip is perfect for the traveler who doesn’t want to spend too much time on the road, but enjoys a variety of scenery reminiscent of Provence, days spent at leisure and memory-making meals.

TRAVEL

DAY 1 ROOM AT THE INN

Upon arrival at San Francisco International Airport, guests can arrange to be transferred by Wine Country Car Service or by premium rental car to the first stop on the journey: SingleThread Farm, Restaurant & Inn just 90 minutes from the airport in Healdsburg, in the heart of Sonoma. Guests start with a farm tour courtesy of owners Kyle and Katina Connaughton, longtime locals who have a passion for the terroir and for hospitality.

Just a few miles from their downtown hotel and restaurant, the farm offers a special preview of what will be served in a multicourse tasting menu later that night at the three-Michelin-starred SingleThread restaurant. Chef Kyle Connaughton spent years cooking in kitchens from Heston Blumenthal’s famed Fat Duck in the U.K. to Hokkaido, where he worked with chef Michel Bras. Katina Connaughton is the lead farmer on property and takes guests through the bounties of the season—squash blossoms, brilliant marigolds, shiso leaf, heirloom tomatoes, baby cucumbers, nasturtiums—all while explaining the latest in irrigation, soil management and sustainability practices. Seeing and touching the ingredients you will consume on artistically arranged plates just a few hours later turns out to be quite a powerful farm-to-table, garden-to-glass experience.

CHECKING IN

After a solo tour, checking into the SingleThread Inn is a dream. With just five extremely spacious, light-filled rooms, this is one of the most sought-after bookings in the valley. A Japanese aesthetic pervades the designs by Studio AvroKO— think lots of wood, stone, slate, wildflowers, lanterns—and it continues in the restaurant’s dining room and open kitchen. The 10-course meal is really the point here, and guests are in for a meal that doubles as true theatre, complete with sake, Champagne and wine pairings overseen by a team of knowledgeable sommeliers.

Strawberry moriawase at SingleThread
SingleThread Farm, Restaurant & Inn

But it is the presentation of the dishes—on ceramics produced by an eighth-generation family in Iga, Japan, as well as artisans such as Connor McGinn and Tsuchinao Shikki, whose lacquerware chopsticks are things of beauty—that sets the dining experience apart. From a stunning amuse bouche arrangement of 10 tantalizing bites to vegetable- and seafood-forward dishes that incorporate ingredients seen on the vine earlier in the day, each course is a revelation for the senses. Menu highlights are too numerous to count, but cucumber moriawase with bluefin tuna, shima-aji, shiroika, myoga and plum, as well as misozuke managatsuo—agedashi eggplant with caramelized sakayo miso and yuba—are among the delectable standouts. Fully sated, rolling upstairs to a cossetting bedroom complete with luxurious robes and crisp linens makes for a truly once-in-a-lifetime stay.

LOCAL COLOR

A fun collaboration with Audi means that guests have access to a small fleet of the latest electric vehicles. They’re perfect for exploring the charming town of Healdsburg and neighboring wineries, including the sublime Flowers Vineyard & Winery and the Donum Estate with its world-class art collection (sculptures by Yayoi Kusama, Louise Bourgeois, Ugo Rondinone and others really pop in the Sonoma sun).

DAYS 2 & 3

NAPA VALLEY BOUND: MEADOWOOD

SingleThread works closely with neighboring Relais & Châteaux properties and producers, so guests are easily transferred to the next location on the itinerary: Meadowood in Napa Valley. The property has been a community hub since the 1960s—for fitness enthusiasts, wine collectors and guests in search of world-class spa treatments and Michelin-starred meals. The property was badly affected by

the Glass Fire in 2020 and has recently reopened its hotel doors following renovations and refreshments. While some of the guestrooms are still closed to the public, the ones that are welcoming guests—36 suites and rooms with sweeping views of the vineyards beyond—remain as cocoon-like as ever, with working fireplaces, plush sofas and spacious bedrooms with plentiful natural light.

WINING AND DINING

The easy, approachable hospitality that Meadowood is well known for remains unchanged. The Forum restaurant—a meeting place for local Meadowood Club members and hotel guests alike—with its airy indoor-outdoor aesthetic still has the best Cobb salads in

Auberge du Soleil
A cottage room at Meadowood

town. This spot is humming from breakfast through dinner, with a casual bar area perfect for sipping one of the area’s award-winning cabernet sauvignon varieties.

Route du Bonheur guests have special access to wineries in the area (the property is owned by the Harlan family, the winemakers behind Harlan Estates, so entrance can be arranged at many of the area’s premiere tasting rooms) as well as hard-to-book-tables including at Thomas Keller’s coveted The French Laundry. For true wine enthusiasts, tastings can be arranged at Promontory, Silver Oak, Opus One, Mayacamas and many more—all with a car and designated driver to make the visit more enjoyable. And while the cuisine on property is outstanding, the Meadowood team is expert at guiding guests to the best picnic lunches (from Oakville Grocery), best burgers (Gott’s Roadside) and best tacos (Picobar at Solage just up the road).

MEADOWOOD SPA: SERENITY BY DESIGN

Guests might find leaving the property difficult, as the Meadowood Spa is an immersive, completely zen experience. Perched on a hill at the top of the property, men’s and women’s garden lounges and an all-suite design ensure complete quiet surrounded by nature. The vast array of treatments incorporate essential oils and products from the area, with herbal massages, HydraFacials and Tree

DAYS 4 & 5 REJUVENATION IN RUTHERFORD

House Mustard Baths all ideal for detoxification and purification. The latest offering is a Corrective Lift Facial by Pietro Simone, a noninvasive experience that incorporates ultrasound and LED therapy for an invigorated, brighter complexion.

ACTIVE EXPLORATION

Three pools—including one dedicated to fitness—five tennis courts and a state-of-the-art fitness center all encourage busy days, while 3 miles of walking trails allow for valley discoveries. The Meadowood Labyrinth encourages guests to wander, reflect and disconnect. Set on the southern end of the property, this design by Master Labyrinth designer Lars Howlett makes for an ideal, calming escape. A nine-hole golf course welcomes guests for a challenging but fun round amid the dramatic valley landscape, and mountain bikes are always available on property.

A Meadowood car whisks guests down to the next stop on the luxurious Route: Auberge du Soleil, which remains a magically bucolic escape almost 45 years after its founding as a destination restaurant. Set on a 33-acre heritage olive grove, the boutique property has grown over the years to include 50 rooms and one- and twobedroom suites, each with its own terrace and sublime views over the vineyards below.

GOURMET DELIGHTS

Auberge du Soleil was built on fine cuisine, so it is fitting that any stay here starts with lunch outside. Book in at The Bar, a newer, vibrant restaurant offering the freshest yellowfin tuna salads, smoked tomato soup and perfectly crispy frites—all with a glass of Belted Vines’ albariño in hand. This is foreshadowing for a more formal dinner at The Restaurant just next door, where multicourse meals and Michelin stars—with wine pairings—await culinary connoisseurs.

DAY TRIPPING

A fleet of Mercedes EVs for guest use makes exploring the charming towns of St. Helena, Calistoga and Oakville easy. A dedicated Route du Bonheur specialist will book preferred restaurants (Press and Hexagon are always in demand) as well as an iconic Mud Bath Ritual at Calistoga’s Indian Springs, which incorporates volcanic ash and geyser water to create a relaxation experience like no other. One of the most scenic and delicious tastings—and there are many to choose from—is at Ovid, an organic farm and winery atop Pritchard Hill. A tasting trip here reveals a part of Napa Valley that is rarely seen, with its endless mountain views and some of the finest cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, merlot, petit verdot and syrah in the region.

DAY 5 RETURN TO CITY LIFE

Finish the Route du Bonheur with one last spectacular feast in San Francisco at Quince, chef Michael Tusk’s three-Michelin-starred Italian- and French-inspired California restaurant. Set in a century-old building in Jackson Square, the 10-course gastronomy menu is full of unexpected flavors and presentations (think celery with white truffle; cauliflower, cuttlefish and habaneros; farfalle with dungeness crab and uni) with wine pairings to match. Wellfed and thoroughly relaxed, you’ll be ready to get back to reality having just taken one of the world’s most relaxing road trips. ■

A CLOSER LOOK

Aboard a MARITIME TREASURE

The phinisi boat Dunia Baru takes barefoot luxury literally—and reinvents the yacht charter on an ancient vessel

A

cross the glassy expanse of Indonesia’s Coral Triangle, a long dark hull glides through water so clear it seems lit from within. The sails of Dunia Baru billow in the warm breeze, carrying it through an archipelago of lush, greenblanketed karsts and secret lagoons where hornbills wheel overhead and the sea flashes with silver schools of fish. This is Raja Ampat, a scattering of emerald-carpeted islets in the country’s east that’s often described as the planet’s last untouched marine frontier. Covering 15,000 square miles within the Coral Sea, it contains the most biodiverse marine region on the planet. Ninety percent of the world’s coral species thrive here, from hard reef-building corals to delicate fans, along with more than 1,500 species of reef fish and six of the seven species of sea turtle. Sightings of adorable pink pygmy seahorses, too, are common.

But getting to this remote region ain’t easy. From New York, at least three flights and 40 hours are required, and once you arrive, the most common form of transport is a “liveaboard” boat, where divers on a budget bunk up for weeks on end in hopes of swimming with massive manta rays and indigenous wobbegong sharks. That all changed when Jing-Yi Wee, a Singapore-based entrepreneur (her family owns Tiger Balm and runs a bank), purchased the Dunia Baru superyacht with her brother from its original American owner, Mark Robba, in 2020.

Robba had spent eight years replicating a Bugis phinisi, a trading vessel made of whole trunks of ulin ironwood that dates to the 1700s and has been given the rare designation of Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. Back in the 18th century, in the forests of Kalimantan (the Indonesian side of Borneo), ulin ironwood grew dense and nearly indestructible—it lengthens an immeasurable half a millimeter a year. Robba wanted his fantasy yacht to honor Indonesia’s maritime history and hired fifth-generation Konjo shipwrights of Sulawesi, part of a long lineage of the ancient Bugis craftsmen who once ruled these seas. He achieved his dream, but few others got to experience what it felt like to sail aboard a vessel that helped open the Far East to international trade. When the Wee family purchased the Dunia Baru, however, they decided to painstakingly refit it for guests and lease it out for a limited number of private charter weeks per year. Designer Deirdre Renniers was enlisted to reimagine the spaces with new upholstery, artworks and Indonesian textiles while maintaining the yacht’s monumental ironwood framework and those iconic, curtain-like sails.

The result is a floating residence that feels both modern and timeless— which, at least aboard this yacht, isn’t a cliché. The Wees call it an “inventory of one,” and they’re right. A vessel like this will probably never be reproduced. For one, the Indonesian government has heavily restricted the felling of ulin.

For another, though no one will confirm the actual price, estimates range from $200 to $500 million for construction. To ensure consistent perfection, the original boatbuilders themselves live aboard the yacht, keeping its hull— which uses no metal or nails, only wood—in like-new condition.

Lucky charters can feel that exclusivity from the moment they board. A crew of 22 greets a maximum of 14 guests with cold towels before ushering them to the aft deck. Shoes are politely collected; for the next week, it’s barefoot luxury from bow to stern. A master suite on the bridge deck commands 270-degree ocean views and comes with a private terrace and a deep daybed for stargazing or sunrise coffee. Six more guest cabins line the lower deck, each with en-suite bathrooms, carved teak accents and circulation systems

that cool without hum or chill. The whole vibe is cocooning yet spacious, grounded by the scent of wood and sea air.

The point of a charter in these parts is to dive with the bumphead parrotfish and barramundi, but even if you’re not into scuba, a week aboard the Dunia Baru truly defines slow travel. Days start with breakfasts of fresh fruits and coconut pancakes prepared by a world-class chef. Lunch could be a Balinese seafood barbecue served to guests in swimsuits. Dinner might unfold beneath the stars, a family-style spread of freshly caught tuna seared with lime and chili served as the horizon dissolves into indigo waters that seem to mark the edge of the earth. Dressing up seems required, so elegant are evenings. The galley, with its marble island, doubles as a social hub;

guests often linger there, watching the chef work while swapping stories with the dive team. After dark, lanterns flicker on deck as cocktails flow, music plays and the wake glows with bioluminescence.

The Rhythm of a Day

The name of this 150-foot vessel means “New World” in Bahasa Indonesia, but when you’re on it, it sure feels like you’ve stepped into another, simpler era, a time when deadlines and stock markets mattered very little, if at all. (Though there is good satellite Wi-Fi.) It’s more Old World than new. Back in the days when ships like this were regularly constructed, the Bugis had a

Dunia Baru, with its sails aloft, sailing through Komodo National Park, Indonesia’s land of dragons

legendary reputation: They were merchant sailors, navigators and pirates whose swift, masted schooners carried nutmeg and clove across the archipelago. Colonial lore even credits their name as the origin of “boogeyman,” a nod to the fear they inspired when they raided Dutch spice ships under cover of night.

What makes a phinisi distinct is its rig as much as its deck that gently slopes upward toward the bow. Unlike Western schooners that hoist sails vertically up the mast, a phinisi’s canvas unfurls sideways, like a curtain, along fixed spars. Typically, the two main masts carry seven or eight sails that slide outward on horizontal booms, rather than rising aloft. Dunia Baru modernizes this invention, incorporating a more up-to-date system. This ingenious approach, born from centuries of local adaptation, allowed the same spars to double as loading cranes in port, an advantage for traders moving heavy spice cargo. The hull on all phinisis, as well as Dunia Baru’s, is long and lean with a sharply pointed bow, designed for speed and stability in the island winds and allowing the boat to enter narrow straits between tiny dollops of forest-carpeted islands, venturing into uncharted lagoons where bigger ships wouldn’t dare to hazard.

This means that days aboard fall into an effortless rhythm. Dawn brings soft light and the sound of waves against the wood. Some guests stretch into yoga on the foredeck; others sip espresso while the crew readies dive gear. The first dive of the morning might descend into a coral garden where reef sharks patrol the edges and clownfish dart among anemones. Certified divers can join deeper drift dives, while beginners can work toward PADI Open Water certification with the yacht’s onboard instructors or just snorkel at the surface. Between dives, the crew rinses gear and lays out fresh towels and tropical fruit smoothies.

Late mornings invite exploration—by kayak through teal lagoons, by paddleboard along limestone cliffs or by jet skis into hidden coves that open into unmapped beaches. Around midday, the ship’s tender might ferry guests to shore for a picnic beneath jungle palms. Afternoons unfold at an easy pace: wakeboarding or waterskiing across glassy bays, reading in the shade of the sundeck awning or whizzing down an inflatable slide into water so clear the seabed seems almost within reach. As sunset approaches, the captain sets a slow course through calm seas, trims the sails for the evening light and joins guests beneath the glow of Orion, reflected in the stillest of waters. Drink, dance, chat, play cards, read…then awaken to an entirely new vista, quite literally, every day.

The Journey Through the Coral Triangle

The typical itinerary begins in Sorong, gateway to West Papua, before sailing south toward Misool, where cathedral-like caves open into blue lagoons. Guests kayak through the Tomolol cave system, a network of chambers where shafts of sunlight illuminate stalactites dripping from limestone ceilings. Not for the claustrophobes, but certainly for the ’gram.

At Balbulol Lagoon, Dunia Baru anchors between sheer karst towers mirrored perfectly on the water’s surface; sometimes it’s hard to tell which way is up. Paddleboards glide silently above their reflections and snorkelers drift atop coral gardens alive with clownfish, wrasses and schools of yellow snapper. The journey continues north to Wayag, home to Raja Ampat’s most photographed destination, which cruise director Carl-Philippe Rousse insists is the crown jewel of this region but is officially called the Four Kings (the translation of Raja Ampat). A short, steep and challenging walk rewards intrepid hikers with views of a maze of hundreds of heavily eroded, sharp karsts that seem to hold hands. Underwater dives reveal an otherworldly biodiversity of branching hard corals, purple fans, vast clouds of anthias and chromis swirling like colored smoke. Even novice divers can immerse themselves in this netherworld of nature’s most bizarre inventions through a quick resort dive certification process.

Then comes Sauwandarek, a tranquil village fringed with white sand and home to a learning center built by Dunia Baru’s original owner in 2019 as a way of giving back to the community that helped create it. The community of 50 families, consisting of fewer

than 200 inhabitants, venture deep into the sea, continuing an ancient fishing lifestyle.

Between islands, the yacht crosses what some call the Amazon of the Ocean. Raja Ampat lies at the heart of the Coral Triangle, a marine realm that harbors 90 percent of all known coral species. Whale sharks rise from the depths to feed on plankton; massive mantas with 18-foot wingspans sweep between groups of fish; even the elusive “walking shark,” a small endemic epaulette species that ambles along the seafloor, makes the occasional appearance. Brave soldiers can take part in night dives that reveal a different cast of characters: flamboyant cuttlefish, bobtail squid, lionfish, octopus, and the phosphorescent pulse of soft corals.

FROM TOP: The seven-cabin traditional phinisi vessel sailing in Indonesia’s Banda Sea; the boat’s lounge

Legacy and Preservation

Though this ship embodies extreme luxury, it can also be relatively guilt-free. The yacht’s design minimizes impact: Waste is processed onboard, reef-safe products are kept aboard for everything from sun care to shampoo and single-use plastics are verboten. The crew partners with local conservation initiatives, supporting coral restoration projects and marine park rangers. The vessel’s deliberate schedule, which limits charters and balances them with strategic maintenance periods, ensures Dunia Baru remains shipshape while reducing strain on fragile ecosystems. The crew itself reflects the same commitment to continuity. Most staffers have been on the boat since its maiden voyage, a rarity in the charter world. Many are divers, engineers and sailors who consider Dunia Baru a calling, not a job.

Yet even paradise can feel the pressure of change. Recently, proposals for nickel mining in parts of Raja Ampat have alarmed environmental groups. In response, the yacht’s itinerary now extends farther north, beyond Indonesia toward Micronesia—waters that remain pristine and politically protected. These journeys double as quiet advocacy, demonstrating that luxury travel and ecological integrity can coexist.

Dunia Baru also occasionally sails to the Banda Islands, once the world’s sole source of nutmeg. The air there still smells faintly of spice, and colonial forts crumble elegantly beside the sea. It was from these volcanic isles that the Dutch once traded Run Island for Manhattan (yes, that Manhattan), a footnote in history that

underscores the global reach of these waters. Today, as Dunia Baru anchors off Banda Neira beneath the cone of a once-active volcano and guests dine on nutmeg-infused meals, the whole experience calls to mind the centuries of trade, empire and exploration that began right here.

Those past practices aside, you can’t deny that this yacht aims to preserve what was good—even great—about those 18th-century days in Southeast Asia. To sail aboard Dunia Baru is to inhabit the intersection of culture, craftsmanship and conservation. It is a reminder that true luxury is not about accumulation of stuff, but about time, intention, freedom. In a world of excess, Dunia Baru offers the rarest indulgences of all: space, silence and the steady rhythm of a ship built by hand to outlast its age. duniabaru.com ■

LAURA DERN RADIATES A FAMILIAR BLEND OF INTELLECT AND WARMTH THAT HAS MADE HER ONE OF HOLLYWOOD’S MOST BELOVED FIGURES FOR DECADES.

At 58, the Academy, Emmy and Golden Globe Award–winning actress has transcended the labels of leading lady or indie muse. She’s a modern icon who has made a career out of breaking boundaries rather than fitting into them. From Blue Velvet to Big Little Lies, Marriage Stor y to Enlightened , she brings rawness, truthfulness and empathy to every role. In person, she’s confident, open and warm.

Whether she’s being directed by the late, great David Lynch, Greta Gerwig, Mike White, Alexander Payne, Noah Baumbach or Steven Spielberg, Dern transforms herself completely into a role. The daughter of actors Diane Ladd and Bruce Dern, Dern grew up in Los Angeles and spent time on her parents’ movie sets at a young age.

“I knew I wanted to become an actor when I was 7 years old,” Dern has said. “My dad was working with Alfred Hitchcock, my mom was working with Martin Scorsese—and it was the great summer of my childhood.”

One of Dern’s first roles was as an extra in the Scorsese film Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, which earned Ladd an Oscar nomination.

In 2018, Ladd was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Doctors told her that her only hope of getting better would be by attempting to expand her lung capacity through exercise. So Dern and her mother began going on walks near the beach, during which the pair had deep conversations about life, love and their relationship.

“I thought I was dying, so Laura and I just told each other everything,” Ladd said. Dern recorded their conversations, which became their joint 2023 memoir Honey, Baby, Mine . Just after sitting for DuJour ’s cover shoot and before an interview with Dern could be completed, Ladd died at age 89.

“My amazing hero and my profound gift of a mother, Diane Ladd, passed with me beside her this morning, at her home in Ojai, California,” said Dern in a statement. “She was the greatest daughter,

LAURA REALLY REWARDS THE AUDIENCE WITH A DEEPLY HONEST PERFORMANCE THAT AT TIMES FORCES YOU TO CATCH YOUR BREATH.

mother, grandmother, actress, artist and empathetic spirit that only dreams could have seemingly created. We were blessed to have her. She is flying with her angels now.”

It’s certainly a bittersweet time for Dern. While dealing with the loss of her mother, she also welcomes the return of her Apple TV series Palm Royale, as well as two of her most exciting film roles since she won an Oscar five years ago for playing a powerhouse divorce attorney in Baumbach’s Marriage Story.

First up is Baumbach’s latest, Jay Kelly, in which Dern stars as the beleaguered publicist to the title character, played by George Clooney.

“I love working with Laura because the work never ends. She makes everything better,” says Baumbach. “Laura and I are in a forever dialogue that continues through and beyond the movies we’re making. We meet at dinner, call and write each other with character and story ideas, locations we’d like to shoot in, movies to watch, books to read. Laura is an early reader of all of my scripts because she always seems to understand what movie I’m making better than I do.”

After that comes Bradley Cooper’s Is This Thing On? The film is its own kind of Marriage Story, though certainly a more optimistic one. This time, Dern stars as Tess, a one-time Olympian volleyball player who is questioning her longtime relationship with Will Arnett’s Alex.

Arnett, Cooper and Mark Chappell co-wrote the film with Dern in mind. “She’s such a powerhouse,” Arnett explains, describing his costar as a “great artist.” “Her ability to find all these details about her character and bring them to life is truly remarkable. Laura’s Tess is such a rich, complete and complicated character, and she always finds ways to surprise. I think Laura really rewards the audience with a deeply honest performance that at times forces you to catch your breath.”

“That was my goal, to write a character worthy of her abilities,” adds Cooper. “To work with her is a lifelong dream.” ■

I’VE ALWAYS WANTED TO DO A ROM-COM, AND PARIS IS MY

PLACE

SO WHEN THE SCRIPT CAME, I SAID, FAVORITE
IN THE WORLD, ‘GREAT, I’D LOVE TO.’

Minka Kelly isn’t the current reigning Queen of Netflix, she’s certainly in the royal court. The first season of her Texas-set series Ransom Canyon was a huge success: It spent four weeks in the global top 10 list and reached the top 10 in 77 countries. Netflix immediately ordered a second season, which Kelly is currently filming in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where she grew up.

This month also marks the release on the streamer of Kelly’s first ever rom-com, Champagne Problems. In the holiday romp, Kelly, an effortlessly young 45, plays Sydney Price, an American executive who flies to Paris to execute a takeover of Chateau Cassell, a family-owned Champagne house. Of course, on her first night there, she has an epic date with a man who turns out to be the heir to the company after a meet-cute at a French bookstore. (Art imitates life imitates art: Kelly’s own first stop in Paris is usually Shakespeare and Company, the bookstore on the Left Bank.)

With its musings on Ratatouille , swoonworthy scenes of the City of Lights around Christmas and equally swoonworthy romance, Champagne Problems goes down like, yes, a glass of bubbly.

“I’ve always wanted to do a rom-com, and Paris is my favorite place in the world, so when the script came, I said, ‘Great, I’d love to,’” recalls Kelly. “To think I would get to do a rom-com in France, that was very exciting. It’s such a nice breath of fresh air. We laughed all day.”

During filming in Paris, Kelly rented a flat in the Marais. “For me, it’s all about food, and I ate a lot,”

says Kelly, who only speaks a little bit of French. “I love to go out to eat by myself, especially when I’m out on the road. I go exploring and watch this culture happen around me.”

One of her favorite haunts is Chez Janou on Rue Roger Verlomme. “Whenever anyone is going to Paris, I always send them there. I just love how French it is. They’re famous for their chocolate mousse that comes in this huge bowl, and they just come over and lop it on the plate,” she says. “I’d order this delicious beef stew and an entire baguette with salted butter and a glass of wine, and I’d just sit and eat at the bar and watch all the waiters be so lively. The whole French people being rude thing—I haven’t experienced that.”

In addition to the time spent in her favorite city, making the movie “was everything I’d hoped it would be,” says Kelly. “I’m a bit of a goofball, and I got to let loose and let my personality show. It was nice to be silly. It was a really nice respite from being on a drama and being so emotional.”

Of course, Kelly is talking about Ransom Canyon , in which her character, Quinn O’Grady, a concert pianist who moves home to Texas to run a dance hall, pines for Staten Kirkland, played by Josh Duhamel. It’s a pivotal love triangle that has made the show a hit. But Kelly also could be talking about Tell Me Everything, the memoir she released in 2023 that chronicles her complicated relationship with her mother, a stripper who struggled with drug addiction.

Originally, Kelly wanted to tell that story as a movie in the vein of grounded family dramas like

Thirteen and The Florida Project . She wrote it as a screenplay, which she planned to direct, and the prolific Simon Kinberg was going to help produce. Though she wasn’t sure if she would star as her mother onscreen, “I was going to get it made,” Kelly says. She started talking to line producers to develop a budget. But just as things were becoming real, the pandemic hit.

“Everything went away,” explains Kelly. A few people told her that there was so much more to her story—moving to Hollywood; her initial plans to be a nurse; booking her breakthrough role on Friday Night Lights—that she should reconceive it as a book.

Tell Me Everything was a cathartic experience. It became a New York Times bestseller and thrust Kelly, whose career had quieted a bit, back into the spotlight.

“Sometimes, once you get clear, healthy and happy again, things can flow back in line,” Kelly says. Publishing the book “changed my life.”

For one thing, it opened the door to Ransom Canyon . “It’s about relationships and beautiful landscapes, the horses and the ranches. There’s a real nostalgia to even the aesthetics of the show,” Kelly explains, when asked why she thinks Ransom has connected with audiences. “Everyone can relate to these family dynamics and heartache and not being

able to get out of your own way when you’re trying to make a relationship work.”

To play Quinn, Kelly had to learn to play piano. Now she can share her musical know-how with her real-life boyfriend, Dan Reynolds, lead singer of the band Imagine Dragons. “I’ve been to so many of his shows, and they’re an emotional experience,” she says. “When he’s playing new music at home, I just can’t get enough of it.”

Season 2 of Ransom Canyon will have eight episodes instead of 10 and “more levity,” she explains. Filming in Albuquerque reminds her of her complicated childhood, of course, but things now couldn’t be more different. “I’ve never seen more beautiful sunsets,” she says. “It’s breathtaking every single day.”

She spends a lot of time on her own there. “I’ve made a lot of peace with being alone, and I actually enjoy it.” But it means being left alone with her thoughts, too, which occasionally drift to where she is in her career.

“I feel so lucky to have been doing this for 20 years. It’s crazy,” Kelly says. “It’s one of the hardest businesses to support yourself in, especially coming from where I came from. I started so green.”

And now she’s risen to be among the Netflix crème de la crème. “But more importantly, I know my worth now,” she says. “I feel like I do belong.” ■

DESIGNER KERITH FLYNN TRANSFORMS A LONG ISLAND HOME INTO A CONTEMPORARY HAVEN

Family Style

In the entryway,

hen a dynamic family of four in Woodbury, New York, decided it was time to reimagine their longtime residence, they turned to interior designer Kerith Flynn of Margali and Flynn Designs to lead a top-to-bottom transformation. The goal was clear: to elevate their home into a space that felt sophisticated, contemporary and luxuriously livable—a place equally suited to family life and entertaining.

The three-level home was transformed over a two-year period by Margali and Flynn Designs and Old Work Quality Corp. builders. “The structure had solid bones, but it lacked the sophistication and individuality the homeowners envisioned,” says Flynn. “We reworked architectural details throughout the house—everything from intricate ceiling moldings to a full redesign of the lower-level entertainment spaces.” Now, the residence flows seamlessly between its distinctive spaces: en-suite bedrooms upstairs, a family-centered main floor for living and entertaining and a lower-level lounge that rivals the ambiance of a Manhattan speakeasy.

For the lower level, Flynn used walnut paneling, antique mirrors and bold wallpapers to form an immersive experience. “I also drew inspiration from a visit I made to Adare Manor in Ireland,” says Flynn. “The way they combined metals, paneling and bar details was unforgettable.” The lower level showcases Blatt Billiards tables, Vanguard stools, Four Hands chairs and moody Phillip Jeffries wallcoverings.

The homeowners, who have two children, wanted their home to support both everyday rituals and festive gatherings. “They gave us tremendous trust and creative latitude from the start,” says Flynn. One of the project’s greatest challenges lay in the architectural detailing. “We had to ensure that moldings, paneling and cabinetry blended seamlessly across the home,” Flynn notes. “It took tremendous planning and precision to make every transition feel intentional.” What ultimately makes this home extraordinary isn’t just its materials or design pedigree—it’s the way it reflects the personalities of those who live within. “Every decision was guided by the family,” says Flynn. “Their lifestyle became our compass. The result is a home that’s not just beautiful but meaningful.” ■

A MAGNIFICENT MAISON

Dior has opened a new boutique on Rodeo Drive, celebrating the Maison’s history and its connection to Hollywood. Designed by Peter Marino, this new building, spread across four floors, sits behind an undulating limestone and stucco façade. The brand’s women’s and men’s ready-to-wear, accessories, leather goods, jewelry, beauty and fragrances are all on offer. Additionally, several limited-edition pieces have been specially produced for the store. Furniture pieces by Franck Evennou, Ado Chale and Vladimir Kagan and custom panels of gilded and lacquered metal by Nancy Lorenz adorn the space. On the third floor sits Monsieur Dior, the house’s first restaurant outside of Paris, led by three-Michelin-starred chef Dominique Crenn. Upon entering the restaurant, visitors discover a large photograph of Château de La Colle Noire, Monsieur Dior’s estate and green haven in Provence where the founding couturier came to rest between two shows. Covered by a vegetal wall and a commissioned painting by Nicole Wittenberg, this unique venue allows the art of hospitality and French haute gastronomy to shine forth splendidly, inviting a sensorial experience that brings dreams to life. dior.com

SOUTHEAST ASIA MEETS THE MIDWEST

Crying Tiger, the first collaboration between James Beard award nominee chef Thai Dang (HaiSous Vietnamese Kitchen) and Lettuce Entertain You Restaurants, has opened in River North. The restaurant’s menu focuses on the culinary traditions of Southeast Asia, as well as foods that Vietnamese-born Dang and managing partner Amarit Dulyapaibul both loved growing up. “When I came to Chicago as a cook, I could have never imagined that 16 years later, I would be collaborating with [Lettuce Entertain You] as a chef/ partner for Crying Tiger,” says Dang. “This restaurant means so much to me because the menu pays homage to my immigrant family and our culinary traditions. As we explored Southeast Asia, every culture seemed to borrow flavors and ingredients from one another, and

we are excited to share the diversity in this type of cuisine.” Dishes like crispy Hong Kong pork belly, clay pot lobster pad thai and rolled rice noodles with roasted maitake mushrooms are on offer. Beverage director and partner Kevin Beary created Crying Tiger’s drink menu showcasing cocktails like Thai tea milk punch clarified with cognac, a coconut water cocktail with Johnnie Walker Black and pandan and a salted plum tequila soda made with blanco tequila, pickled plum, calamansi and soda water. London-based design studio David Collins Studio merged the energy of Southeast Asian night markets with Chicago’s industrial and architectural heritage in the design for the restaurant’s 140-seat main dining room, open kitchen, bars, patio and private dining room. cryingtiger.com

The Ritz-Carlton Bacara, Santa Barbara, perched on 78 acres overlooking the Pacific Ocean, has been reimaged with new guestrooms and suites, restaurant and bar concepts, lobby entrance, public spaces and pool and cabana offerings. Design firm Meyer Davis is overseeing the resort’s new look and feel. Layered planting schemes reinforce the surrounding locale, while open-air areas and sculptural furnishings framed in iron and terra-cotta create an immediate sense of place. “With The Ritz-Carlton Bacara, Santa Barbara, we set out to create a resort that feels like an extension of the coastline itself,” says Will Meyer, cofounder of Meyer Davis. “Every element—from the materials to the spatial flow—was chosen to echo the land’s quiet drama and natural texture. The goal was to design a

place that doesn’t just sit on the bluff but belongs to it, drawing guests into an experience that’s immersive, effortless and deeply connected to its surroundings.”

Blending a refined residential ambiance with the relaxed spirit of Santa Barbara, the resort’s 358 guestrooms and suites were redesigned to pay homage to the defining elements that are uniquely Bacara, whether through Spanish tilework, richly layered textiles or handcrafted details that reflect the region’s natural beauty and cultural heritage. Framed by ocean views or lush garden courtyards, each space is designed to foster quiet moments of connection with accommodations transformed into relaxing havens that surround guests in the charm of coastal California. ritzcarlton.com

The Future Perfect , the leading contemporary design gallery with locations in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco, has opened its first Miami outpost at Villa Paula, a 2,000-square-foot landmark in the heart of Little Haiti. Built in 1926 by the Cuban government, Villa Paula was designed by Havana architect Cayetano Freira as both a consulate and private residence for Consul Domingo Milord and his wife, opera singer Paula Milord. The villa features a white stucco façade, stately columns and intricate Cuban tilework—all of which remain intact nearly a century later. “Our work has always been about creating environments that transcend traditional gallery models,” said David Alhadeff, founder of The Future Perfect. “Miami, with its history of design innovation and vibrant cultural scene, is the perfect place for us to take that vision further. Villa Paula’s history and architecture give us the opportunity to create something that is both site-specific and globally resonant.” Original doors, windows, floors and tiles, each bearing the patina of time, remain in place, treated as essential elements of the space’s story. With its central corridor and branching rooms, the villa lends itself to a series of intimate vignettes, each conceived as a distinct, curated environment. On view at Villa Paula are works by designers including Lindsey Adelman, Piet Hein Eek, Faye Toogood and Floris Wubben, as well as works by De La Espada and others. thefutureperfect.com

Manolo Blahnik has expanded to South Coast Plaza with its first Southern California boutique. Imagined by design firm (and frequent brand collaborator) Nick Leith-Smith Architecture + Design, the boutique features a striking geometric façade with a circular motif that continues through to the interior’s bespoke rugs and wallpaper. Individually rotating wall slats create floating shelves to display footwear and small bags, allowing the configuration to be customized to each new collection. Leith-Smith was inspired by one of the designer’s favorite artists, Josef Hoffmann, and his geometric art deco shapes, ornamental detailing and bold, monochromatic designs.“Opening at South Coast Plaza is a tremendous honor,” says Manolo Blahnik. “This historic center has long stood as a beacon of fashion and culture in California. To now have a boutique among its illustrious offerings feels exciting. American clients have always embraced my work with such passion,

and I’m thrilled they will now have a new location to discover exclusive styles.”

Chairs and benches swathed in custom English houndstooth by Holland & Sherry invite clients into the relaxing atmosphere, while the full-service coffee bar delights with seasonal confections. The Breakers Palm Beach has unveiled a world-class tennis and racquet sports facility after a full-scale $12 million renovation. The new 104,000-square-foot sporting enclave features 16 state-of-the-art, open-air courts for tennis, pickleball and padel, each with a cabana and comfort station with seating, chilled towels, fans, filtered water and complimentary refrigerated beverages and snacks. The tennis courts offer three surfaces (grass, clay hydro or cushioned hardtop) for a range of player types and textures. The four grass courts were created using proprietary Capillary Flow technology, a closed-loop hydroponic system for subsurface irrigation and drainage that significantly reduces water use.

The Breakers team enlisted long-standing partner Tihany Design to enrich the casually chic aesthetic with a timeless tennis style in a palette of white with dark green and rich blue accents, perfectly complementing elegant white fencing.

Courtside comfort stations are located adjacent to every court. These elegantly designed, shaded pergolas afford a cool, refreshing retreat between games.

The Breakers offers dedicated instructors for tennis, pickleball and padel along with daily clinics and junior programs. Ken Thompson, a 38-year veteran of The Breakers, serves as director of tennis and racquet sports and oversees a team of 14 USPTA or PTR-certified instructors with an average tenure of 12 years. “With the surging popularity and variety of racquet sports, these activities have become an enduring pursuit of the recreational lifestyle, so we designed a new destination for tennis, pickleball and padel in the most elevated way to create an unparalleled, world-class experience for our guests and members,” says Paul N. Leone, The Breakers’ CEO. “Our investment in these new premium facilities has not only established a new benchmark, it reflects our dedication to the continuous evolution and renewal of our multifaceted property, including timeless traditions such as racquet sports. The new complex honors our rich legacy while embracing the future of our family-owned oceanfront resort.” thebreakers.com

Celebrated chef Brad Kilgore, owner and culinary director of Kilgore Hospitality Group, has launched his latest restaurant, Ama, in the Transamerica Redwood Park at Transamerica Pyramid Center. “Ama is really about bringing two paths of my culinary journey and identity together—my Italian roots and my respect for Japanese precision and use of umami,” explains Kilgore. “Itameshi blends Italian soul with Japanese ingredients. It’s something I’ve been inspired by for years, and Ama is my most personal interpretation of it yet. Being part of the revitalization of the Transamerica Pyramid Center makes it even more special. This building is one of San Francisco’s most iconic landmarks.” Menu items are thoughtful and intentional like the soft egg with scallopgruyère espuma, egg yolk and caviar and the radiatore bolognese made with maitake mushrooms, spicy pepperoni and a creamy dashi of pecorino cheese poured at the table. “I want people to feel like they’ve stepped into another world for a few hours,” Kilgore adds of the space designed by architect Tom Lekometros of Lawrence Group in New York and Kevin Klein of Kevin Klein Design in Los Angeles. “The goal is for every guest to feel a personal connection—to the story, to the flavors, to the energy of the room. Then, for those who discover Ama Social Club tucked in the back, that’s where the night evolves. It’s playful and low-lit,

with live music, DJs, pinball and this nostalgic 1970s energy that lets you stay, have a nightcap and just be.” amabybradkilgore.com

Restaurant veterans David Nayfeld and Matt Brewer of Back Home Hospitality (Che Fico, Che Fico Pizzeria, Che Fico Parco Menlo) have opened the doors to their latest Italian eatery, Via Aurelia, in Mission Rock. “Via Aurelia takes its name from the ancient road that once connected Rome and Pisa, a passageway for merchants, travelers and ideas,” says Nayfeld. “We created Via Aurelia as both a tribute to Tuscany and a celebration of San Francisco’s artistry. This is reflected in the restaurant’s design, the artwork on the walls, the custom plates and, most importantly, the food. It’s our expression of modern Tuscan cuisine.” The elegant 225-seat establishment features both an à la carte dining experience and a five–seven course tasting menu including selections like panzanella with heirloom tomatoes, cucumber, red onion, basil, Cerignola olives, olive-oil fried levain and sungold gazpacho and line-caught black cod with braised leeks and potato. Designed by

Year-round alfresco dining along San Francisco’s waterfront Embarcadero sans whipping wind and frozen hands is now a reality thanks to a newly opened weatherproof patio at Waterbar. “Managing partner Pete Sittnick and I have been thinking about it for years,” says general manager Rich Troiani. “A lot of research went into the structure and design possibilities, including a whole lot of work with the Port of San Francisco and all other permitting agencies. The sightlines, the congruent design elements and smart architectural look make it a very special atmosphere.” Designed by Santa Clara–based firm StruXure NorCal, the elegant, 36-seat heated patio—with close-up views of the Bay Bridge and beyond—spans approximately 1,000 square feet and is framed by a sleek structure with drop-down screens to shield against wind and rain and an adjustable cantilevered ceiling allowing for varying degrees of sunlight. “It is a true design-enhancing experience,” adds Troiani. “It really demonstrates the importance of space and design being in union with our beautiful Bay and cityscape views.” waterbarsf.com

Prada debuts a sorbet-hued gemstone fine jewelry collection

The new Prada fine jewelry collection, Couleur Vivante, by Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons focuses on absolute, intense color, simultaneous dualities and nuances expressed in unanticipated combinations of unconventional, unpredictable gemstones. Each chosen for their exceptional chromatic value and their place within a Prada spectrum, gemstones of amethyst, aquamarine, madeira citrine, pink morganite and oro-verde peridot are contrasted, in dichotomies that challenge notions of preciosity in a mirror of Prada’s constant and insistent interrogation of luxury.

The beauty of these gems and the place of jewelry as an echo of the lives of women form a foundation

for campaign imagery photographed by David Sims. The actors Maya Hawke and Kim Tae-Ri and poet and activist Amanda Gorman are captured in arresting monochrome portraits, each image then recontextualized as a canvas for subtle veils of transparent, translucent color, faces framed as if set within a jewel. These timeless portraits underscore an archetypical form language–drop earrings, solitaire rings, line bracelets and rivière necklaces–yet, through color, the meaning is fundamentally shifted. Prada’s Couleur Vivante proves that jewelry doesn’t have to be safe. It can be colorful. It can be traceable. It can be a statement. The gemstones, the metals, the craftsmanship—all are filtered through Prada’s lens of transparency and responsibility.
