From your mortgage application to enjoying your new getaway, we’ll be there by your side. Together, we will explore our versatile options to see what your unique situation may allow for.

•Our re-cast feature allows eligible customers to “re-cast” or “re-amortize” their loan after making a large principal payment2; buyers will have a lower monthly mortgage payment, but they may pay more interest over the full mortgage term than they would by making a principal reduction without using the recast option
• Buyers can purchase with cash up-front and get a mortgage within 90 days of purchase2
• The ability to lend in all 50 states
We’ll help you understand the financing process to ensure you make an informed decision about your second home mortgage options. 1.

We’re very excited to share our fall print issue starring Tony and Sage Robbins. As the longtime partner of the life and business strategist, Sage has started to share her own wisdom and come center stage.
We have your complete fall shopping guide for all the top trends of the season, a look at the best design and fashion books to crack open and behind-the-scenes details on Fendi’s new fragrance collection. Also in this issue, we profile actors Rob Lowe and Sutton Foster. Christina Ohly Evans wrote about the mustsees, stays, eats and dos in Austria and the rest of Europe for our travel section. Lauren Jade Hill visited Rwanda and I was able to be one of the first journalists to sail on Ritz-Carlton’s new yacht Ilma in the Mediterranean.
Beautiful homes from alpine chalets to Tribeca apartments, designed by talented pros like Kelly Hoppen and Ali Budd, are showcased, along with a deep dive on Roger Federer. We are so fortunate to have worked with photographers like Emilio Madrid and Nick Mele on photo shoots that yielded stunning original visuals for our issue.
We hope you enjoy reading this issue as much as we did producing it.

A young Keaton in a headscarf and denim skirt
FASHION FIRST
Diane Keaton’s fashion is a masterclass in timeless style and personal expression, rooted in menswear-inspired looks, distinctive layering and perfect accessories. Her signature style, popularized by her role in Annie Hall, has made her the fashion icon. Keaton’s use of monochrome and neutral palettes, combined with structured blazers, high-waisted pants and turtlenecks, creates a polished and elegant aesthetic. Her unique approach to fashion, which embraces individuality and sustainability, has left an indelible mark on the fashion world, inspiring designers and fashion enthusiasts alike. In Fashion First (Rizzoli), the actor reminisces on her favorite (and notso-favorite) fashion moments from the past seven decades. Keaton has gone through her scrapbooks to find some of her earliest fashion
moments and inspirations and takes us on her style journey from her early career through the present. The book offers a captivating visual journey through Keaton’s evolving style, from childhood photos in homemade outfits to her latest selfies. Red carpet appearances, magazine spreads and street-style images fill the pages, showcasing her unique fashion evolution. Striking photographs by iconic photographers like Annie Leibovitz, Ruvén Afanador and Ron Galella are paired with personal anecdotes from Keaton’s closest friends, collaborators and designers such as Giorgio Armani, Ralph Lauren, Sarah Jessica Parker, Nancy Meyers and Thom Browne. This visually stunning and deeply engaging book is a must-have for fashion enthusiasts and admirers of the incomparable Keaton.

BREITLING: 140 YEARS IN 140 STORIES: WRITTEN BY BREITLING
Swiss luxury watchmaker Breitling was founded in 1884 by Leon Breitling, who began a legacy that would redefine the modern chronograph, champion the skies as the official timekeeper of civil aviation, launch a wristwatch into space and put the first international emergency beacon in a timepiece. With contributions by Gregory Breitling, Fred Mandelbaum, Jeff Stein and Kris Stoever, Breitling: 140 Years in 140 Stories: Written by Breitling (Rizzoli) tells the brand’s history in an unconventional way. The collection of 140 stories is packed with intimate photos, first-person accounts and a visual feast of more than 100 vintage and modern watches. The book celebrates Breitling’s commitment to craft, culture and innovation seen in the brand’s iconic Chronomat timepiece. “It is sporty yet elegant and, while its roots are in the 1980s, this timepiece is dedicated to innovative women of today,” says Breitling CEO Georges Kern. “The Chronomat influenced the industry for many years, and its name and some of the design elements are absolutely iconic.” Adam Driver, Victoria Beckham and Charlize Theron have all been ambassadors for the brand over the years.
“We have this huge history,” says Breitling CEO Georges Kern. “It’s endless what lies in our past and what we have in store for the future of Breitling. That’s why every moment is just the beginning.”

Dolce & Gabbana: From the Heart to the Hands (Rizzoli) brings together a unique collection of Alta Moda and Alta Sartoria garments, exquisite jewelry and archival treasures for the first time. Curator Florence Müller explores the brand’s Italian heritage and the enduring influence of Italian culture in some of its most iconic and innovative collections. The book’s 10 chapters—on the subjects of handcraft, artistic glass, the leopard, devotion, the workshop, architecture, the white baroque, Sicilian traditions, goddesses and opera—combine runway and editorial photography with images of art, architecture, movies and artisanal craft. Behind-the-scenes images reveal the intricate fabric inlays, leatherwork, embroidery, lacework, crochet, beadwork and other techniques that bring each garment to life.

A NEW SCENTSATION
A FAMILY AFFAIR
Coming up on its centennial anniversary, Fendi unveils a new collection of seven fragrances inspired by the maison’s family and chosen family BY
NATASHA WOLFF
The Fendi fragrance exhibit at the brand’s Roman headquarters, Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana
We couldn’t help being inspired by Rome. This is where it all began and where the Fendi story unfolds.
The perfumes had to reflect this idea that the true luxury, the true sophistication, lies in details, simple things.
In 1925, when Adele Casagrande Fendi and her husband, Edoardo Fendi, opened a fur and leather goods workshop in Rome, little did they know that their craftsmanship would continue to inspire for decades. Almost 100 years later, Fendi is looking to its past for the creation of its first fragrance collection with the help of the maison’s family and chosen family members, including Anna Fendi, Silvia Venturini Fendi, Leonetta Luciano Fendi, Delfina Delettrez Fendi, Tazio and Dardo Vascellari Delettrez Fendi and artistic director Kim Jones. “We couldn’t help being inspired by Rome. This is where it all began and where the Fendi story unfolds,” says artistic director for menswear and accessories Silvia Venturini Fendi. The resulting seven fragrances feature highly concentrated ingredients like orange blossom absolute from Tunisia, bergamot from Calabria, patchouli from Indonesia, iris from France and vanilla from Madagascar and were developed alongside perfumers like Quentin Bisch, Fanny Bal and Anne Flipo.
The seven fragrances in the collection all have strong identities, inspired by strong personalities, each with their own story to tell. “The idea for the collection came quite naturally to us. We started with the notion of intimacy, and what could be more intimate than family feelings?” says Venturini Fendi. “Each fragrance is an olfactive testimony, the scented reflection of a unique story and character. We wanted to appeal to different generations and tell the story of different periods in the history of Fendi, which is about to celebrate its centenary. We can readily say that we have explored and used all the senses.
OPPOSITE:

La Baguette, at Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana
“Perché No is a musky, woody fragrance that connects you to a stone and wood house, isolated on a secret island, white linens and cottons drying near the garden,” explains Venturini Fendi. “For Delfina’s Sempre Mio, we went back to Morocco where Delfina has such memories. The Ourika Valley is a very special place where nature feels raw and powerful, a place where orange blossom and lemon blossom spread their bright flowery smell in the Mediterranean air.” For Delettrez Fendi, it was about an intimate journey into the way she defines herself. “The perfumes had to reflect this idea that the true luxury, the true sophistication, lies in details, simple things, edges,” says Venturini Fendi. “Each fragrance encapsulates a bit of this idea, an effortless luxury full of simplicity and surprises as you enjoy rediscovering them.” fendi.com

CurrentBody ’s new Laser Hair Removal Device is the only at-home hair removal solution for permanent, full-body results. The device cleverly combines the speed of IPL technology and the power of in-clinic lasers for fast, permanent, full-body hair removal. It works by delivering 16 concentrated beams of light that are absorbed by melanin in the hair follicle. The melanin converts the light into heat, weakening and destroying the hair follicle to effectively reduce hair count, slow the growth of new hair and leave skin smoother and hair-free. In as little as four weeks of 15-minute sessions, users achieve up to 80 percent fewer hair follicles on legs, arms, bikini line, facial hair and more. us.currentbody.com

Since 1968, fragrance house Diptyque has always drawn inspiration from nature, an endless, enduring source of beauty and poetry. From nature in the wild to nature tamed by man, Diptyque celebrates the sensual, dreamlike dimension of each element, breathing life and emotion into a universe of scents and sights. With Les Essences de Diptyque, the maison is opening a new olfactory chapter. The collection comprises five eaux de parfum created in honor of natural treasures that are precious, captivating and yet, in terms of scent, imperceptible to man: coral, mother of pearl, bark, water lily and the crystal formations known as the desert rose. Les Essences de Diptyque are an opportunity to marvel at the sights and scents of a natural world. For this project, Diptyque called on long-standing collaborators Fabrice Pellegrin, Alexandra Carlin, Nathalie Cetto and Olivier Pescheux to create the new scents. diptyqueparis.com

Since launching in 2015, Dior Sauvage has become the top-selling men’s fragrance globally, which is a major achievement in its own right. Now enter Dior Sauvage Eau Forte, a water-based, alcoholfree fragrance created by perfumer Francis Kurkdjian. The result is a longer-lasting, fresher, more intense fragrance with its own unique olfactive composition that separates it from the rest of the Sauvage family. Kurkdjian has added his own signature to the iconic Sauvage fragrance profile, resulting in a fresh take on the classic chypre. “I was keen on the idea of water acting as a link and a crossing point between heaven and earth, in a fragrance embodying this incredible power,” says Kurkdjian. “A dialogue of scents is introduced at the heart of a lively, joyful fragrance. The legendary freshness of Sauvage thereby became a place of reconciled discords, and of opposing movements that create unity.” The resulting scent is as intense as it is refreshing. dior.com

A downtown New York City apartment was reimagined as a serene yet eclectic sanctuary for a family of four

Toronto-based interior designer Ali Budd has transformed a 3,000-square-foot apartment in Tribeca from the ground up, stripping it down to its studs and rebuilding it with meticulous attention to detail. (Budd is also the host of Hulu’s home design series House of Ali .) The owners wanted to showcase their travel-inspired vision (they’re travel agents) and collaborated closely with Budd’s team to infuse the space with unique flair. “The apartment’s location in Tribeca provided a fantastic backdrop with its vibrant neighborhood and historical charm,” says Budd. “The space itself was quite dated with simple finishes, necessitating a full gut renovation. We stripped it down and rebuilt it to reflect the owner’s eclectic style.”
This was the couple’s first time collaborating with Budd and her team. “They found us through a referral from a mutual acquaintance who admired our previous work,” says Budd. “The process was highly collaborative, with the owners being very particular about the pieces they wanted, which led to a beautifully curated space.” Throughout the project, Budd sourced materials and furniture from vendors like Trueing, Kelly Wearstler, Art + Loom, Apparatus and Lindsey Adelman. In addition to these carefully chosen items, the team incorporated one-of-a-kind custom pieces, such as a dining table featuring an organically cut travertine top and chiseled sides fabricated by Brooklyn’s International Stone
Pierre Frey wallpaper and a Senufo ottoman by Arno Declercq
Collections, which serves as a striking centerpiece. The design team and the couple sourced unique furniture pieces and design accents from artisans around the world.Throughout the apartment, slabs sourced from Artistic Tile and BAS Stone add further sophistication and cohesion to the design. The family of four was challenged by Budd and her team to rethink the apartment’s spaces and reimagine the existing layout, in one space using a fireplace as a room divider. “The color palette is rich and varied, incorporating neutral tones with vibrant accents,” says Budd. “The walls feature custom plaster wall textures, and we used premium paints from Portola Paints. Now the apartment boasts a unique style with design elements inspired by travel, reflecting the owner’s experiences and tastes.” ■

HOLDING COURT
Roger Federer teams up with Assouline for a stylish book on his career and personal life
BY NATASHA WOLFF
On the court, Roger Federer is famously precise, powerful, determined, tough and dominant. He’s also quite stylish. Off the court, he’s not much different. With 20 Grand Slam titles under his belt, the now-retired champion is one of the greatest tennis players of all time. Of course, his strength extends beyond delivering killer 130 mph serves. His appealing image—in conversation, he’s very confident, gentle and well-spoken—combined with his controversy-free life and unprecedented success, has helped generate an estimated $45 million a year in endorsement deals with blue-chip brands. When he’s not competing, he’s going the extra mile with his charitable pursuits. His Roger Federer Foundation works with local NGOs in South Africa, Malawi and Botswana—as well as in Switzerland—to support children’s early learning and education initiatives. “I truly believe philanthropy has to be from the heart,” he says.
Fashion is something else to which Federer has discovered an unex pected connection. His sartorial choices on court have become progressively edgier over the years. Early on, his natty tournament attire—the neatly pressed whites, the custom Nike cardigans, the
interlocking RF logo—distinguished him from some of his less turned-out peers. But it was in September 2006 that he was launched into an even more rarefied stratosphere when Vogue editor Anna Wintour brought him along to Marc Jacobs’ spring runway show. Since then, Wintour has remained a sort of style adviser to Federer. “I couldn’t be more thankful for her love of my family,” says Federer. “She likes taking care of me.”
This fall will see the publication of Federer (Assouline), the first visual biography to be published of the tennis icon, following the recent release of the documentary Federer: Twelve Final Days. The tome will give fans a sought-after and exclusive look into Federer’s childhood, private life and career. Featuring never-before-seen family images from Federer and his wife Mirka’s own archives, exclusive interviews and emotional handwritten notes, the book intimately explores the grace and determination that define one of the great global icons of our time, alongside quotes from notable friends such as Rafael Nadal, Lionel Messi, Trevor Noah, Bill Gates and Wintour. Part of the proceeds from the book will benefit the Roger Federer Foundation, supporting educational projects in Southern Africa and Switzerland. ■

THE PRINCESS DIARIES
Tony-winning actress Sutton Foster charges back to Broadway as Princess Winnifred in Once Upon a Mattress
BY MARSHALL HEYMAN
PHOTOGRAPHY BY JENNY ANDERSON
It’s a cause for celebration every time Sutton Foster decides to return to the Broadway boards. Luckily, since the end of the pandemic, audiences have had multiple opportunities to experience her—as Marian the Librarian opposite Hugh Jackman in a 2022 revival of The Music Man and as Mrs. Lovett opposite Aaron Tveit in Sweeney Todd earlier this year. She returned again this summer at the Hudson Theatre as Princess Winnifred in Once Upon a Mattress, a transfer of the New York City Center Encores! production that brought her rave reviews in January.
The role of the tough-as-nails Winnifred the Woebegone, who is unafraid to climb castle walls or swim a moat, was famously created by Carol Burnett. She made her Broadway debut in the musical, a comic retelling of “The Princess and the Pea,” back in 1959. (Sarah Jessica Parker played the role in 1996.) Here, Foster talks about her decision to return to the role and how much she misses her stint as the lead of Younger, Darren Star’s genius half-hour comedy that ended in 2021.
What made you want to bring Once Upon a Mattress to Broadway? I had an absolute blast doing the show when we did it at New York City Center earlier this year, so bringing it to Broadway felt like a no-brainer for me. It’s such a joyful show, and there’s something in it for everyone—no matter what age. It’s nice to exist in that joyful world and provide that escapism to audiences right now.
What do you enjoy most about playing Winnifred?
She’s the zaniest character I have ever played. She’s so self-assured in who she is, even though she is unusual! I love playing characters who own their uniqueness, and it gives me so much freedom as an actress to really go there and do the craziest things. She is basically an unleashed version of myself.
How do you feel about the idea of “happily ever after” and fairy tales?
I have a 7-year-old daughter, and sometimes, when we read the more classic fairy tales, I’m like, huh! Evil queens, princesses and finding your prince…the messaging that you must behave or you’ll be thrown in an oven and eaten was what I had when I was growing up. I’m excited that my daughter now experiences much broader and more complex messaging with heroines who aren’t looking for love, but for friendship and community; heroines who are strong, independent and unique. I think in many ways, Princess Fred was way ahead of her time. Even though she is looking for love, she is doing it completely in her own way, one that is truly authentic to her. One of my favorite lines from the show is “Princess Winnifred is unusual and Prince Dauntless is unusual—maybe they can be unusual together.”
What are the challenges of Once Upon a Mattress in comparison to, say, Sweeney Todd or Anything Goes or The Music Man? Winnifred is an incredibly physical character, and there is a lot of physical comedy, so really maintaining my body is the thing I’m most concerned about.
We all have our “Princess and the Pea” things we’re precious about. I, for one, have a hard time sleeping without a really good pillow and a water bottle next to my bed, even if I don’t drink from it. Do you have any eccentric sleeping habits?
I sleep with earplugs and two white noise machines. I always have a glass of water by my bed but never drink from it. I remember an old wives’ tale that if you leave a glass of water by your bed it will catch the bad dreams, so you never want to drink from it.
I, for one, really miss Younger. Do you? What do you imagine Liza is up to these days?
I miss the cast so much. Working on that series was seven years of our lives! I’d be curious what Liza is up to. She’s almost 50! Maybe it’s time for a reboot?
Liza worked in publishing. Any books you’ve read you’re telling friends to read?
I recently read Kelly Bishop’s memoir, The Third Gilmore Girl , and I loved it. Her story is so inspiring. I’m a huge Gilmore Girls fan and I worked with Kelly on Bunheads, so it was amazing to learn more about her and hear her tell her story.
How do you unwind from a performance?
I love watching a little television. I’m a big fan of all reality TV. I just did a serious binge of The Traitors. And every single night I light candles and take a bath. That’s my ultimate come-down ritual. ■

With their baroque palaces, grand hotels and storied cultural venues, the Austrian cities of Vienna and Salzburg are perennial favorites for aesthetes and outdoors people alike. TRAVEL
VIENNA
From St. Stephen’s Square to the iconic Schönbrunn Palace to the charming city trams and bustling cafés, the Austrian capital on the Danube has stayed true to its elegant European roots but is also dynamic, with art galleries and design-led hotels vying for visitors’ attention. Ever a musical mecca— Beethoven, Brahms, Bruckner, Haydn, Mahler, Mozart, Schoenberg, Schubert, Johann Strauss I and Johann Strauss II all called Vienna home—the arts continue to flourish here in all forms, at the world-renowned State Opera and at the Leopold Museum, with its collection of paintings by Egon Schiele and Gustav Klimt. But it is the chance to stroll the city’s endless lush gardens and savor a slice of Sacher torte—a rich chocolate and apricot jam cake that is a Viennese hallmark—that makes a visit here feel like a step back in time. The pace is just a bit slower here, so linger over a decadent Wiener schnitzel with a glass of local grüner veltliner at one of the city’s Michelin-starred temples of gastronomy or opt for a simple street dog (or bratwurst). When it comes to exploring this magical, verdant city, there is no going wrong.
There is no shortage of sumptuous palace hotels here, so it’s the perfect place to make like a Habsburg and be enveloped in an expansive room brimming with gold and jewel-toned velvets. If it’s a more minimalist vibe you’re after, there are plenty of properties that fit that bill as well. In short, Vienna is a hotel town, and this is only a small handful of the very best.
A grande dame since its opening in 1876, this family-owned property is prized for its unparalleled location opposite the Vienna State Opera and for its five-star service. The 152 rooms and suites have been thoughtfully furnished by family co-owners Alexandra Winkler and Elisabeth Gürtler in collaboration with interior designer Pierre-Yves Rochon, and the results are bright, high-ceilinged spaces in hues of cream and gold with bright silk accents. Expansive suites including the Madame Butterfly and the Opera Penthouse Suite have sweeping terrace views of St. Stephen’s Cathedral and the Albertina Museum and are ideal for families, while smaller deluxe rooms feel equally regal.
A favorite with heads of state (John F. Kennedy and Queen Elizabeth II were guests) and celebrities (John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Justin Bieber and Naomi Campbell) alike, the Sacher and its restaurants and cafés are tourist attractions in their own right. The Rote Bar is the place for elevated Viennese classics, while the (all-blue) Blaue Bar is the perfect place for a cozy cocktail pre- or post-opera.
In addition to the resplendent surroundings, the staff here specialize in access to everything, from hard-to-book tables at Michelin-starred restaurants including Amador and the design-led Steirereck in the Stadtpark to the best coffeehouses and wine bars. The owners are deeply involved in all areas of local life, which means guests can arrange for private entrance to the famed Spanish Riding School (home to the regal Lipizzaner horses), lessons at the Elmayer dance school to prepare for the opulent Vienna Opera Ball, a behind-the-scenes Lobmeyr crystal tour and bespoke Christmas market outings. sacher.com

Set on central Am Hof square (the city’s oldest), this former bank building features 146 rooms in varying sizes from a standard studio to the grand Presidential Suite. From the imposing entrance with its polished marble floors and coffered ceilings to Wiener Werkstätte–inspired brass design details, the hotel’s spaces are a serene study in silver and taupe.
The Golden Quarter hotel’s bustling Bank Brasserie is set in the former cashier’s hall and serves some of the best Wiener schnitzel in town, while the buzzy Café Am Hof draws a local clientele for breakfast and afternoon kaffee und kuchen (coffee and cake). Rounding out the offerings are the wood-paneled Living Room fumoir and the chic Bank Bar with jewel-toned velvet seating and a comprehensive cocktail menu.
Of special note here: A subterranean pool (a rarity in Vienna) housed in the original vault features glittering gold tiles and offers a welcome diversion for families. Also, don’t miss the chance to work with the team of top-notch concierges, who can arrange a tour of the spectacular UNESCO World Heritage–listed Schönbrunn Palace and Gardens, where you’ll find everything from an opulent ballroom that rivals Versailles to a zoo that dates from 1752 and is said to be the oldest in operation. hyatt.com
PARK HYATT VIENNA
With stunning views of the green copper dome of St. Peter’s Church, this neoclassical gem on Petersplatz is a unique city center oasis complete with a light-filled atrium. Set in a 19th-century former bank, the hotel opened in 2022 after an extensive renovation and features 100 unique rooms of varying sizes, including the two-bedroom Royal Treichl House with an open kitchen that’s ideal for families. A sense of calm pervades the property with a palette of soft gray and burnt orange hues that never compete with the stunning, colorful views beyond. Of special note is the rooftop Neue Hoheit Brasserie, where floor-to-ceiling windows
and an al fresco “Secret Garden” overlooking the historic Old Town church domes make it the ultimate cocktail spot. The hotel is decorated with an emphasis on local makers: design studio Kroenland is responsible for the top floors, artist Marie Hartig’s floral paintings grace the salon and a sprawling rooftop mural by Viennese graffiti artist Knarf provides an unexpected counterpoint. The fifth and sixth floors feature a steam room and sauna and the (temporarily closed) spa, and a state-of-the-art fitness facility is set in the bank’s former boardroom on the second floor. rosewoodhotels.com

For a contemporary Viennese sensibility combined with Parisian art deco and baroque touches, book in at this chic boutique hotel where a playful mauve mural by Chez Dédé sets the stylish stage upon entry. Its 91 rooms and suites feature chinoiserie and custom glass light fixtures, and each is furnished differently; there is nothing cookie-cutter here. Many of the rooms feature balconies, perfect for watching the local life of the sixth district below. An in-house boulangerie and patisserie serves the flakiest croissants on the outdoor terrace, while the seventh-floor Chez Bernard draws tourists and locals alike for breakfast crepes and, later in the day, the signature bouillabaisse and craft cocktails. Also on the seventh floor is a modest spa with a four-person sauna and a fitness room flooded with natural light. hotelmotto.at
Situated around the corner from the elegant Sacher, just across from the Albertina Museum and the Opera House, The Guesthouse is an understated 39-room gem designed by Sir Terence Conran, who imbues everything he touches with effortless modern style. Synonymous with The Sound of Music, this picture-perfect city nestled in the Alps is much more than dirndls, strudel and Mozart House tours (though all are excellent). With the vibrant Salzburg Festival playing host to renowned opera singers and musicians each summer, and with must-see sights including the imposing fortress, St. Peter’s Abbey and the stunning gardens of Mirabell Palace, a visit to Austria’s second city is perfect in any season.

HOTEL SACHER SALZBURG
Set on the banks of the Salzach River across from the majestic Salzburg Cathedral and the Fortress Hohensalzburg, this 110-room historic jewel was opened in 1866 and has reigned supreme ever since. Resplendent rooms overlooking the baroque Old Town feature upholstered silk walls, period antiques, oil paintings and crystal chandeliers that are decidedly old-school, but in the sweetest way.
Public areas include a glass-ceilinged lobby with enveloping sofas and decorative orchids, while the cozy Zirbelzimmer restaurant is the place for classic Austrian dishes in a wood-paneled setting. In case you didn’t get your fill in Vienna, the Café Sacher here serves the famous Sacher torte as well as cocktails on the terrace at dusk. You’ll want to linger over the outstanding breakfast buffet complete with fresh breads, tarts, housemade jams, local cheeses and yogurt while you plan the day ahead. Lunch on the terrace overlooking the river is the perfect place for Salzburger nockerl, a signature three-peak meringue dessert topped with strawberry cream that is light and delicious.
With its prime location, this family-owned Leading Hotels of the World property offers the best of authentic Salzburg. The staff are happy to book tables at the Matteo Thun–designed M32, overlooking the city, or at the atmospheric Schloss Aigen in the nearby countryside. But the hyper-local recommendations from the dirndl-wearing staff are the best; from Mozart concerts at the Mirabell Palace to the best coffee and pastries at the iconic Café Tomaselli or organizing horse-drawn carriage rides and private excursions to the picturesque town of Hallstatt, no request is too large. sacher.com
Founded in 1407, this Old Town gem is quintessential Austria, right down to the antlers that line the hotel’s hallways. Set on the Getreidegasse with its shops and cafés, it is the perfect jumping-off point for exploring Salzburg’s legendary Christmas markets as well as the modern art museum with its collection of works by Kokoschka and Klimt.
The hotel’s 70 rustic-chic rooms are full of alpine antiques and artifacts—painted headboards, corner cabinets and deer-themed memorabilia—but with the latest subtle technologies, such as heated towel racks and hidden TVs. It is the hotel’s dining options that get most attention, however, with the gastronomic Restaurant Goldener Hirsch drawing a crowd of musical luminaries and locals for its hearty, locally sourced cuisine (venison figures prominently). RWANDA RISING
One&Only brings two remarkable wilderness sites closer together in the Land of a Thousand Hills
BY LAUREN JADE HILL
The exterior of a villa at One&Only Gorilla’s Nest
I’m standing right behind our guide as he lets out a low rumble from the back of his throat, mimicking the sound that shows the gorillas we’re approaching that we come cordially. Before entering the rainforest of Volcanoes National Park in northwestern Rwanda, our guide, Christoph, had given our small group a crash course in gorilla communication. Now, as we enter a small clearing in the dense wilderness, we come face-to-face with a group of these majestic primates.
We’d set out that morning to trek through the forest in search of the Hirwa gorilla family. A close-knit group of adult females, blackbacks, juveniles and infants led by the dominant silverback, the family’s name means “lucky one,” given because it is one of the few mountain gorilla families to have had a set of twins. The youngest tumbles rambunctiously through the undergrowth, colliding and wrestling with family members, while the silverback keeps a wary eye over the group. Standing and beating his chest, the eldest male begins to charge toward us to assert his dominance before pausing and returning nonchalantly to his chosen resting spot.
Over the course of an hour, we follow the gorillas, who by now are unfazed by our presence, as our guide cuts a path through the
thick vegetation with his machete. The silverback pulls vines from above, gorging on the leaves, and the baby of the group rides through the dense thicket on the back of one of its seniors. When our time is up, we leave the gorillas to retreat further into the forest as we follow our makeshift path out, ducking beneath overhanging vegetation and carefully treading through the thick undergrowth. Finally, we reach the edge of the park, which is bordered by verdant farmland foraged for potatoes by a large troop of golden monkeys.
I’m staying at the nearby One&Only Gorilla’s Nest, which consists of a small collection of sumptuous treehouses and suites alongside high-style communal spaces including a spa, infinity pool and forest-view dining area. All of this lies amid a cornucopia of indigenous and exotic tropical plants and flowers beneath towering eucalyptus trees with a backdrop of green-blanketed volcanoes. The surrounding nature immerses you in this opulent setting, with elements of Rwandan culture brought into every aspect of the stay.
While the lodge understandably attracts widespread attention for its heady combination of luxury and adventure and proximity to Rwanda’s gorillas, One&Only has even more to offer in this impossibly scenic country. Joining the forest-enshrouded resort in the northwest is its sister hotel, One&Only Nyungwe House, several

hours’ drive away. To make it easier to visit both remote sites in one go, One&Only has now introduced the One Escape package, combining three nights at each property with a 35-minute helicopter transfer between them through a new partnership with Akagera Aviation.
On arriving at One&Only Nyungwe House, it’s immediately evident this lodge is just as special as its more famous sister property. Nyungwe House sits amid vivid green tea fields on the edge of Nyungwe National Park, one of the oldest rainforests in Africa. It’s home to many species of primates including chimpanzees and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2023 for its ancient forest, endemic species and overall biodiversity.
During a stay at this inviting lodge, which encompasses standalone suites, a spa and infinity pool commanding views over the ancient forest, days are spent venturing along the park’s scenic trails, going in search of its chimpanzees, and picking leaves in the surrounding tea fields before taking part in a tea tasting session. During my stay, I follow the forest trail leading down into a valley and back up to the thundering Kamiranzovu Waterfall and hike the circular Igishigishigi Trail, taking in the park’s towering treetop canopy walk. As I watch the lowering sun cast a golden glow across the forestscape from high up on this second trail, I’m struck by the sheer beauty of a wilderness that more travelers should surely include in their Rwanda itinerary. oneandonlyresorts.com

IT’S HARD TO MISS TONY ROBBINS.
Not only is he nearly 6-foot-7 and built like a linebacker, he’s a bestselling author, life coach and business strategist, entrepreneur and global philanthropist with a booming voice and an outsize personality. His motivational seminars have helped jumpstart and support many of his loyal acolytes for decades.
But, as everyone knows, behind many strong men there’s an even stronger woman. Sage Robbins has a fraction of her husband’s Instagram followers—37,000 to Tony’s 7 million. But, lately, this Canadian-born speaker, philanthropist and businesswoman is moving into her own spotlight.
“I’m definitely an eternal introvert. And, of course, being an introvert, life would have it that I married Tony Robbins,” explains Sage. “I’m a private person, even though our life has had a public lens. Truthfully, I’ve been more comfortable as a support. But at this stage of my life, I feel spoken to. I feel called. I feel nudged to step forward, and it feels like guided timing.”
Sage, clearly a wise embodiment of her name, was raised in a small town on the coast of British Columbia with a brother, three sisters and foster siblings in need of temporary homes. She describes her parents as “salt of the earth.”
“I was really blessed,” says Sage of her mom and dad, who have been together for more than five decades. “They demonstrated what love looked like. They still hold hands. It’s lovely to watch them. My parents were so open-minded; we never talked about stepchildren or foster children. It was just our family.”
Sage met Tony at one of his events in Hawaii. She was working as a phlebotomist, and Tony came in to get his blood taken. There were “maybe a few hundred people in the room,” recalls Sage, “but we made eye contact. It was just one of those moments— more of a soul recognition. It just felt like the world stood still.”
experience more being together. We just have an appreciation for those human, ordinary moments of life,” Sage says.
Every night around the dinner table, they talk about why they’re grateful. For their daughter, “it might be her teddy bear, it might be her Play-Doh, it might be the dog. Sometimes it’s mom or dad. It’s sweet. I’m a prayerful person, and my prayer just looks like ‘Thank you.’ We can innocently take so much for granted, so it’s a ‘Thank you for this moment.’”
Recently, Sage and Tony launched a podcast for “authentic family conversations,” as Tony describes it. Together, they discuss a range of topics, from marriage to identity to raising kids and communication.
“We wanted to have something that felt intimate and felt connected and felt more conversational, topics or conversations we might have around the dinner table,” explains Sage. “After 25 years, Tony and I have gone through everything together. We wanted to convey our intimate parts, our lives, the humanness, the spirit of it, all of it—even just the practice of how we navigate our own inner life and world on a day-to-day basis. Being a parent is obviously incredibly rearranging and humbling, and so we wanted to share that space, too.”
“OF COURSE, BEING AN INTROVERT, LIFE WOULD HAVE IT THAT I MARRIED TONY ROBBINS.”
“I’ve met millions of people over 47 years, and she stands out as the most unique, sincere and loving soul I’ve ever met,” says Tony. “She’s the executive producer of our entire life. I couldn’t do it without her.”
They married in 2001. They now live in Palm Beach with a 3-year-old-daughter, a late-in-life addition for both Sage, 50, and Tony, 64. (Tony has four kids and five grandchildren from previous relationships.) They had their child via surrogate after Sage suffered a series of miscarriages.
“I never imagined that we’d be where we are today,” says Sage of their marriage. “It just gets simpler and it gets more beautiful.”
For years, “I was so focused on wanting to be a mom,” she says. “I focused on it so much at one period that I missed living, and I missed being a mother to life. What really was healing for me over the years was dropping the obsession to be a mom and letting go and allowing life to surprise me.”
Adds Tony: “We wanted to wait to do this when we could be together at home. To have a 3-year-old at this stage of life is such a gift. She’s brought so much joy to our lives. It’s a beautiful season of life.”
That season began around the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, which slowed everyone down, including Sage and Tony, who were on the road traveling to over 100 cities about 200 days a year in 2019. “I’m grateful to not be on the road like we were at the beginning of our relationship,” says Sage. She believes her lived experience gives her more wisdom as a mother. “We have more to offer” their daughter, she says. Tony, for one, has “softened down.”
As Sage explains it, their life as a family is relatively normal and, well, Floridian. They swim, read, enjoy the sunshine, go to Publix, share stories before bed. “We do less doing and we
This summer also brought the second year of the She’s Unstoppable Summit, a free virtual women’s conference spearheaded by Sage and friends such as Serena Williams, Tyra Banks, Derek and Hayley Hough and Maria Menounos. “It’s just an opportunity to come together, to connect and to share.” The unifying factor is to “find a kinder way.” “This is a day to celebrate women, to come together and to share in the beauty, to experience other women that are rising above their obstacles,” Sage says. “It’s an invitation back to our nature, to listen to our journeys and find the good.”
The conference is yet another extension of the Robbinses’ long-running philanthropic efforts, which have included work on such issues as the environment, hunger relief, animal rescue and stopping human trafficking. Together, Sage estimates, they have planted over 71 million trees. In a decade-long campaign with Feeding America, they have provided nearly 1 billion meals to people in need. They have helped save over 42,000 children from trafficking. City of Dreams, a film the Robbinses have produced about child labor, is in theaters now.
Helping people, explains Sage, “doesn’t have to be writing a check. It doesn’t have to be money. It’s just love. I don’t know if it’s my age or my stage of life, but I appreciate the simple things.” ■
GIVING BACK
“‘We cannot achieve world peace and progress on a planet half fed and half hungry,” says Tony Robbins of their philanthropy work.

CHIC Chalet
Kelly Hoppen has transformed an old chalet into a luxurious and cozy retreat in the heart of the French Alps

near Courchevel, South African–born British interior designer Kelly Hoppen has transformed an old ski chalet into an architectural masterpiece. “This beautiful old chalet was restored to the last nail,” says Hoppen. “The view over Courchevel from one side is beyond stunning, and on New Year’s Eve you can watch the fireworks display either lying in the bath or from the comfort of the bed. It’s breathtaking, and the interior melts into the surroundings.” Featuring modern architecture, vertical and horizontal wood paneling and integrated lighting, the 4,300-square-foot chalet is full of vintage pieces of furniture with multifaceted textures. Black-and-white photography complements the space, while a collection of vintage glass vases by Anthony Stern offers a graphic touch and brings a luxurious touch to the interiors.
The spacious dining area features a rough block wood table surrounded by Kelly Hoppen chairs draped with sheepskin throws for winter under modern matte black hanging lamps
OPPOSITE PAGE: The kitchen offers a contemporary yet timeless look, with matte gray cabinetry complemented by hanging lights above the kitchen island, retro tiles and clad ceiling and walls
The flooring of the hallway showcases a taupe wood in contrast with a black strip that is mirrored on the ceiling to create height and the illusion of width
The wine cellar and pantry have slate shelves with top-down lights that illuminate the space
ONE OF THE MAIN CHALLENGES WAS ENSURING THE MODERN UPDATES DID NOT DETRACT FROM THE CHALET’S ORIGINAL CHARM.
The living room features a fireplace with black wood breast contrasting and taupe cladding, a Timothy Oulton cloud sofa and a RH pendant light
IT’S BREATHTAKING, AND THE INTERIOR MELTS INTO THE SURROUNDINGS.
Hoppen knows the clients well, which helped in the meticulous and harmonious execution of this top-down project. “The original chalet had strong, authentic bones but required extensive restoration,” says Hoppen. “We restored the structure down to the last nail, ensuring we preserved its original charm while modernizing it for contemporary living. The goal was to create a warm, inviting space that feels both luxurious and homey. This was achieved through a neutral color palette, vintage furniture and modern architectural elements.” Hoppen was inspired by the stunning natural surroundings of the French Alps and the timeless elegance of vintage French design for the neutral color palette with shades of taupe, gray, black and cream. “One of the main challenges was ensuring the modern updates did not detract from the chalet’s original charm,” she explains. “Balancing the old with the new required careful selection of materials and design elements to maintain harmony throughout the space. Furniture was carefully selected to complement the overall design and add unique character to each space in the chalet.” ■

SINCE
he found fame
as a teen heartthrob in movies like 1983’s The Outsiders, Rob Lowe has been the subject of thousands of celebrity interviews. More than 40 years later, we still love The Outsiders— a Broadway adaptation just won Best Musical at the Tony Awards and we’re still interviewing Rob Lowe. (Note the story you’ve just started reading.)
But amid the many second acts of his career, Lowe, 60 and still a looker, has reversed the tables and become the interviewer.
On his popular weekly podcast Literally!, Lowe goes toe-to-toe with subjects like Oprah Winfrey; his good friends Gwyneth Paltrow and Robert Downey Jr.; Ed Zwick, who directed him in his 1986 breakout About Last Night ; Netflix head Ted Sarandos; Arnold Schwarzenegger; and Lowe’s own family members, including his wife, Sheryl, a jewelry designer, and their sons Matthew (a “civilian” who has a law degree and works in venture capital) and John (an actor with whom Lowe currently stars on the Netflix comedy series Unstable).
Lowe gets the most anxious when his family members appear as guests on the podcast. “I don’t know what to ask them. I don’t know what they’re going to do,” he explains. Non-Hollywood types like billionaire tech entrepreneur Marc Andreessen also make him anxious. “I get nervous when I have super smart people on,” Lowe says.
“What I love about the podcast is it’s more about listening than questioning. You have to listen when you interview, just like when you act,” he says. “People are interesting, and if you follow what they’re saying, they’ll reveal a lot. You go down all the rabbit holes.”
Lowe says part of the reason he started the podcast was as an antidote to the often silly viral moments that come out of late-night television, like Carpool Karaoke or Lip Sync Battle. Lowe appreciates old-school interviews and old-school talent.
“I watch [old episodes of] The Tonight Show, and they were raconteurs. They knew how to be self-deprecating and charming. They knew how to land a joke,” Lowe says. Now, he explains, a talk show producer will call and ask something like, “Can you get in a go-kart with me?”
“I want to vomit in my mouth,” he says.
Lowe’s guests know he’s a “safe zone,” but he still wants his conversations to be “real, with ebbs and flows.”
“I’m not out there looking for salacious stuff, and I’m not looking to pile on,” he continues. “If I have Tom Brady on my podcast, I don’t need to ask him about his divorce. There’s always more value in moving people away from the stuff that makes them uncomfortable.”
That said, Lowe admits: “I don’t think I’m a pushover. I make fun of my guests plenty.”
Despite having recorded more than 200 episodes, Lowe finds it’s easier to be interviewed than it is to interview. Doing the podcast, “I have to have my producing and editing hat on, wondering, When is it time to move on from this subject? Is this getting slow? Is this getting boring? ”
Jacket, $5,990, pants, $1,890, TOM FORD, tomford.com . Watch in stainless steel, 18k red gold and anthracite with rubber strap, $10,500, BREITLING, breitling.com . Necklace, $8,650, bracelet, $28,600, ring, $14,500, MR. LOWE BY SHERYL LOWE , sheryllowejewelry.com
It’d be hard to imagine anything Lowe doing these days as boring. Sure, over the years he’s had plenty of clunkers—from dancing with Snow White at the 1989 Oscars to a handful of movies better left unmentioned—but he covered all that in his 2011 memoir, Stories I Only Tell My Friends. We’re drowning in a sea of celebrity memoirs these days, but Lowe’s stands out as having ushered in a new age of the Hollywood confessional.
“Of all the things that I’ve done, I choose my memoir over the best episodes of television I’ve made,” Lowe says, ranking it above
“THERE’S ALWAYS MORE VALUE IN
MOVING PEOPLE AWAY
FROM THE STUFF THAT MAKES THEM UNCOMFORTABLE.”
canonical shows like The West Wing and Parks and Recreation “The degree of difficulty and the upside versus downside is off the charts. You have to be authentic and honest. If you’re going to dance around things, you have no credibility.”
When Lowe started writing the book, “the celebrity memoir was dead. It was dead!” he says. “Now, when I talk to people in the publishing world, they say that Stories I Tell My Friends is the first thing they give to someone when they’re writing a book.”
In the memoir, Lowe dissects his bad-boy image, substance abuse problems and the decision to raise his family in Santa Barbara instead of Los Angeles. Looking at his career trajectory following the book’s publication, it seems now that the memoir may have exorcised any unnecessary self-consciousness and brought on the Golden Age of Lowe.
Lowe has long seemed to poke fun at his image (see Wayne’s World and Austin Powers), but stints on later seasons of Parks and Recreation , The Grinder (which lasted one memorable season on Fox in 2015) and now Unstable have given us a Lowe that is admirably loose, a bit mischievous—even goofy. He seems to be having a great time.
“He’s an actor to his bones and also so, so experienced that his approach is always playful, always truthful and he always makes it look effortless,” says his Unstable co-star Sian Clifford, who stars as chief of staff to Lowe’s tech god Ellis Dragon, a kind of Elon Musk doppelganger. “He’s certainly shown me how to approach my work with a much lighter touch.”
LOWE BELIEVES THAT
one of the tricks to a successful character-driven comedy is lots and lots of episodes, so he’s grateful that a second eight-episode season of Unstable drops on Netflix in August. He’d like to see much longer seasons, but “you can never argue with the mysterious [Netflix] algorithm. Still, one of the things I love about the show is it’s fun and has laughs and it still won’t take you as long to watch as The Irishman .” (That’s Netflix’s notoriously expensive Scorsese movie, which runs 209 minutes long.)
“You have to get to know the characters and you need to spend time with them,” Lowe explains of growing a sitcom. “It’s a proven fact that Parks and Recreation wasn’t even funny until the second year. It didn’t become Parks and Rec until episode 40! Eight episodes is not enough time to get to know characters. I stake everything on that. There’s a reason that people are liking season two of Unstable. They know the characters now. It’s a mathematical thing.”
The show also provides an opportunity to work opposite his son John, with whom he co-created the series. “He’s really coming into his own,” says Lowe. “As you go along, you learn the strengths of the
actor, and we adjusted his character to make him less of a dweeb. The writing got crisper.”
The goal for Unstable , says Lowe, is “absurdist and heartwarming. Arrested Development is the North Star.” But it can’t all be absurd. “You have to care about the characters. If they’re not grounded, you’re watching a cartoon. At the end of the day, you don’t really care about Homer Simpson, but live-action comedy has to come out of real emotion and real conflict and real relationships and something you believe is plausible, even if it’s just barely sometimes.”
On top of Unstable and his podcast, Lowe is always working. “When I became an empty nester, I decided I could commit to more things.” In addition to the Fox series 9-1-1: Lone Star, he recently created a game show he sold to the network.
“It sounds really stupid, but the idea came to me in a dream,” Lowe says of the game show. “You’ve gotta keep yourself learning, and that’s how the spirit stays young. I love to work. It keeps me vital. I’m also aware of how few people are working into their sixth decade in this business, and you don’t get there by not working.”
At this point, there’s not much in Hollywood Lowe hasn’t done, and there aren’t many people he doesn’t know. “You’d have to dig pretty deep. The truth is, I can get anybody on the phone, and that’s sick. It’s amazing to do,” Lowe says. (It also makes booking his podcast a lot easier.) “But there’s always some new mandate or idea that Hollywood concocts that makes me have to learn or stumble.”
All that work means Lowe doesn’t have a lot of time to enjoy the other stuff his industry produces. “When I actually find something that compels me to watch from the beginning to the end, I want to weep,” he says, noting The Iron Claw and Saltburn as recent works that held his interest. “Though, here’s the problem: I liked Saltburn a lot more when it was called The Talented Mr. Ripley, which is one of my favorite movies.” Succession gets his gold star. “I’d give my fucking eyeteeth to be on a show like that,” Lowe says. “I’d be so down for Succession: The Musical.”
Until the Roys start singing on Broadway, we’ll have to be satisfied with The Outsiders, which Lowe has not yet seen.
“I’m flattered, though,” Lowe says, acknowledging the new generation that will get to experience S.E. Hinton’s “amazing” story. “How could you not be? I can think of so many movies or TV shows or moments that are lost to the mists of time five years later, let alone 40. To be a part of something for 40 years? Wow.” ■

Ilma, the second yacht from The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, embarks on inaugural voyages in the Mediterranean
By NATASHA WOLFF
Ilma
n 2022, Ritz-Carlton debuted Evrima, the first yacht from The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection. It was the first time a luxury hospitality company had expanded into the cruising category. This fall, the brand’s newest superyacht, Ilma, embarks on inaugural voyages in the Mediterranean from the Amalfi Coast and Greek isles to Monte Carlo, Rome and Barcelona. (A third ship, the 794-foot Luminara, will hit the seas in 2025.)
With the highest ratio of space per guest at sea, the 790-foot Ilma will feature 224 suites—all with private terraces–and will offer two new upper suite categories with more than 1,000 square feet of space each. Blending style and sophistication with a relaxed ambiance, the yacht will showcase contemporary craftsmanship and refined interior finishes envisioned by London-based architectural and design firm AD Associates, while exteriors will reflect the vision of Helsinki-based design studio Aivan and will be reminiscent of some of the world’s most elegant private super yachts. The ship boasts five restaurants, a wine vault, an open-air entertainment space, expansive pool area, spa with 11 treatment rooms, three distinct fitness spaces, an outdoor cinema and an expanded marina with a hydraulic
platform that provides direct access to the ocean. When the crew-to-guest ratio is almost 1-to-1, you know you’ll be well taken care of.
Ilma’s food and beverage options, most included in the fare, are extensive. At the Beach House, bright, airy interiors flow into an expansive outdoor pool deck, creating a relaxed yet upscale setting for enjoying pan-Latin cuisine. The menu, developed in collaboration with James Beard Award–winning chef Michael Mina, is inspired by the bold, fire-born flavors of South and Central America while highlighting ingredients from the Caribbean. Also on board are Seta su Ilma, a modern Italian fine-dining restaurant by chef Fabio Trabocchi with a tasting menu; Memor ī , serving contemporary pan-Asian dishes; Mistral, offering Mediterranean flavors; and a regionally inspired menu at Tides. “The Beach House will be the ultimate culinary complement to Ilma,” says Mina. “I have always been fascinated with the powerful flavors and vibrant energy of the countries that make up Latin America and the Caribbean, and I have dreamed of bringing an array of their ingredients together one day. I am thrilled to be collaborating with The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection to introduce this new restaurant to Ilma’s guests.” ■

Chef-owner Kim Alter (Nightbird and The Linden Room) has just debuted her third restaurant concept in Hayes Valley, NightJar. Located adjacent to Nightbird in a former floral studio, the sophisticated venue will also act as a seasonal pop-up space for private events, guest chefs and winemakers. “NightJar is classy and serves itself well as a canvas for a vintage pop-up, cocktail party or sit-down dinner,” says Alter. “I love that NightJar is different from Nightbird, but symbiotic.” Alter tapped local decorative painter and friend Caroline Lizarraga to help with the
design. “Because I know Kim so well and I know her food, I am determined to give her space that reflects what she herself creates,” explains Lizarraga. “Her dishes are complex and unexpected, and I often wonder how she did what she did on a plate. So we set off doing that on the walls. They are dark and moody with tons of layers to give great depth. I think when people walk in they think, Where am I? That’s always the goal, to transform people through the atmosphere. Kim does it through her cooking, and we enhanced that with the space surrounding.” nightbirdrestaurant.com

ROOM REQUEST , SOPHISTICATED SONOMA
Sonoma’s El Dorado Hotel & Kitchen , a 27-room mainstay dating to the 1840s, has new life thanks to a redesign that has refreshed the guest rooms. “The full room remodel was inspired by layering modern classic undertones with contemporary touches,” says Palisades Hospitality and Mosaic Hotel Collection vice president of design and projects Nadine Curtis. “We wanted to emphasize the regal character of the historic building, maintain an intimate and comfortable feel and build new fresh, clean aspects.” The redesign, the first part of a multiphase process, also includes a new takeaway-only Mexican offering, EDK Cantina (think Baja fish tacos and Mexican fries with short rib birria) helmed by chef Armando Navarro. “Our goal is for guests to leave with memorable and unique experiences that truly resonate with the essence of Sonoma,” adds El Dorado Hotel general manager Stephanie Lewis. “From our personalized service to our thoughtfully curated amenities, every aspect of their stay is designed to create a lasting impression.” eldoradosonoma.com

For modern Mexican eatery Arandas, located within Hotel Les Mars in downtown Healdsburg, executive chef Adrien Nieto turned to his own family roots and travel memories. “I want guests to feel like they’re dining at my home or in my kitchen,” says Nieto. “Growing up, if you came to my house, my parents would always try to feed you. I’ve always embraced that idea of warmth and hospitality. We’re calling it ‘Chicano Cuisine.’ Not from here, not from there.” Showcasing what he calls “modern Mexican with soul,” Nieto’s personal menu standouts in the sleek 60-seat restaurant—overhauled by Talbert, Helms & Eccles Interior Design (Chalk Hill Winery)—are inspired by trips to Oaxaca, including papas (seasoned potatoes with chili salt, avocado crema, chives, sesame seeds and smoked trout roe) and pescado (market fish paired with mole amarillo, pineapple, summer vegetables, Meyer lemon and cucumber salsa). “What makes [pescado] a fun dish is we season it with Thai spices and aromatics,” adds Nieto. arandashealdsburg.com

The floral throughline between two of Paris’ greatest couturiers

Idrew women-flowers, soft shoulders, fine waists like liana and wide skirts like corolla,” said Christian Dior when asked about his inspiration for his New Look collection. The only thing Dior loved more than dressing women was his gardens. His protégé, Yves Saint Laurent, would carry the botanical aesthetic through his own collections for Dior and eventually to his own fashion house.
Dior’s childhood was spent at Les Rhumbs, his family’s seaside estate in Granville, Normandy. Here, in the gardens meticulously transformed into a verdant Eden by his mother Madeleine, the seeds of Dior’s passions were sown. His favorite flower, the muguet, or lily of the valley, is synonymous with the house of Dior; he gave all of his atelier’s employees a bouquet of the flower on May 1 as a good luck charm for the upcoming couture season. The muguet motif was used many times in his designs: embroidered on dresses, in jewelry, in fragrances and in millinery work.
In his 1958 debut collection for Dior, Trapèze, Saint Laurent paid tribute to his mentor by adorning hats with sprigs of muguet. Known for its delicate beauty and purity, the emblematic bloom reappeared in Saint Laurent’s final collection in 2001, gracing a diaphanous organdy blouse. This thoughtful homage encapsulated the enduring bond between the two fashion legends. Saint Laurent and his partner, Pierre Bergé, immersed themselves in a world of blooms, with their daily lives enveloped by gardens. Their apartments, secondary residences and fashion house were adorned with floral motifs, reflecting their profound passion for nature. For Saint Laurent, flowers were an endless well of inspiration, seamlessly woven into the fabric of his creative world.
One of the hats and the blouse will be displayed in Les Fleurs d’Yves Saint Laurent , a new exhibition at the Musée Yves Saint Laurent. The exhibition will feature more than 30 garments that highlight Saint Laurent’s botanical inspirations from his first days at the House of Dior through his final collection at the helm of YSL. Les Fleurs d’Yves Saint Laurent opens September 20 at the Musée Yves Saint Laurent in Paris. museeyslparis.com
