A Few Cognitive Benefits of Learning an Instrument

The founder and director of Ecole Jean-Jacques Rousseau (the French School of Austin), Dr. Hind Louali directs the school in providing French immersion and arts programming for children aged preschool through sixth grade. Additionally, Dr. Hind Louali has helped implement a mandatory string instrument program that teaches all students violin or cello.

The cognitive benefits of learning an instrument are extensive, and may include the following:

1. Relieves stress. Listening to and playing music has a physiological effect on the body, including lowering blood pressure and slowing heart rate, which contributes to a feeling of calm.

2. Improves academic performance. Music stimulates the brain and improves functions like memory and abstract reasoning, skills that are essential in math and science.

3. Increases discipline. A music instrument requires daily practice to master, which means students must practice time management and patience.

4. Boosts creativity. Playing music requires not just technical skill, but also personal expression. Children who can express themselves through music tend to be more creative in other areas, as well.

5. Improves memory. Playing an instrument activates both sides of your brain, which strengthens both short-term and long-term memory.
