EDITORIAL We are pleased to welcome our new and returning residents, guests and visitors back to paradise with our latest edition of Punta Mita Living, your guide to the most recent changes, lifestyle trends, exciting activities and signature events in our community. And this year, we have a lot to share with our readers.

It has been a year of reflection and transformation, as we celebrated the 10th anniversary of The St. Regis Punta Mita Resort, updated the iconic Residents’ Beach Club into what we now call the Pacífico Beach Club, brought culinary trends like a Mexico Cityinspired food truck and modern mixology to our community, anticipated the opening of the newest dining experience, Dos Catrinas, at Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita, and prepared for favorite annual signature events like the American Express Punta Mita Gourmet & Golf.

For this edition of Punta Mita Living, we sat down for breakfast with John McIntyre, the new Director of Golf for the Punta Mita Golf Club, to talk about the game, life and the new Punta Mita Golf Academy, which takes our community to the next level of international luxury golfing destinations. We also catch you up on the latest advances at the Punta Mita Hospital, which has radically changed the quality and accessibility of health care for Punta Mita residents and the surrounding local community.

A FEAST FOR THE SENSES AMERICAN EXPRESS PUNTA MITA GOURMET & GOLF Written by Jennifer Bradley Franklin American writer Virginia Woolf once wrote, “One cannot think well, love well, sleep well if one has not dined well.” Fortunately for the more than 400 guests who traveled from far and wide to join in Punta Mita’s VII Annual American Express Punta Mita Gourmet & Golf, dining well was only the beginning. Spread over four magical days in November, the event brought together celebrated chefs from around the globe to cook alongside Punta Mita’s talented resident chefs and golf stars, including Mexico’s Lorena Ochoa as a guest of honor.

Arriving for the first time to Mexico’s beautiful Riviera Nayarit, with its brilliant sunsets over the Pacific and blissfully balmy weather, was enough to whet my appetite for the festival, with events across both of the compound’s luxurious signature resorts.

The festival kicked off in grand style with an extravagant party on the beach of Four Seasons Punta Mita. More than 20 chefs from both properties and from around the globe prepared tasting bites, while guests wandered around, bare toes in the sand. I immediately sought out some familiar faces, searching for guest chefs Ford Fry and Drew Belline who hail from my hometown of Atlanta, Georgia. Their delicate scallops on the half shell, topped with juicy satsumas and crisp radish, were among my favorite bites of the evening. Other highlights included dishes from vegan celebrity chef Leslie Durso, and Four Seasons Buenos Aires’ chef Nicholás Díaz. We tasted mezcal from boutique producers, indulged in just-fried churros from a portable cart and gazed up at a sky full of incandescent stars.

UNA FIESTA PARA LOS SENTIDOS: AMERICAN EXPRESS PUNTA MITA GOURMET & GOLF Por: Jennifer Bradley Franklin Virgina Woolf, la reconocida escritora estadounidense, escribió alguna vez que “no se puede pensar bien, amar bien y dormir bien si no se ha comido bien”. Afortunadamente, para los más de 400 invitados que participaron en la VII edición del American Express Punta Mita Gourmet & Golf, comer bien fue solo el comienzo. Llevado a cabo durante cuatro maravillosos días, el evento reunió a famosos chefs de todo el mundo para cocinar junto a los talentosos chefs residentes y a varias estrellas de golf (incluyendo a la mexicana Lorena Ochoa como invitada de honor).

Y es que llegar por primera vez a la hermosa Riviera Nayarit, con sus brillantes puestas de sol sobre el Pacífico y su agradable clima templado, fue suficiente para despertar mi interés por el festival, con sus varios eventos en los exclusivos resorts del desarrollo.

Todo comenzó con una extravagante fiesta en la playa de Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita. Más de 20 chefs de ambas propiedades y de todo el mundo prepararon bocadillos de degustación, mientras los invitados caminaban alrededor con los pies directamente en la arena.

Inmediatamente busqué rostros familiares y me encontré con los chefs invitados Ford Fry y Drew Belline, de Atlanta, Georgia, mi ciudad natal.

Sus delicados callos de hacha en media concha cubiertos con jugosas satsumas y rábanos crujientes, fue uno de mis platillos favoritos de la noche. Otros destacados fueron los platillos tanto de Leslie Durso, la celebrity chef vegana y Nicholás Díaz, el chef de Four Seasons Resort Buenos Aires. Probamos el mezcal de productores boutique, dejamos la dieta atrás y nos permitimos unos deliciosos churros recién hechos y contemplamos un cielo lleno de estrellas incandescentes.

Since the festival is meant to be a chooseyour-own-adventure-style affair, some revelers (like myself) opted for days filled with culinary experiences including cooking classes, wine and tequila tastings, and meals paired with carefully selected spirits. Meanwhile, golf aficionados played through two spectacular Jack Nicklausdesigned courses, with many holes adjacent to or facing the glittering Pacific. Lorena Ochoa, who is the most decorated athlete in Mexico, played alongside guests in appreciation for the festival proceeds that support her foundation promoting education and healthy family activities through golf.

Not being a golfer, I took advantage of a festival perk for those who don’t feel the greens’ siren song. I spent a blissfully relaxed morning in Remède Spa by The St. Regis Punta Mita Resort, with a two-hour Hisi awakening ritual, named for the word that means “dream healer” in Cora, an indigenous Uto-Aztecan language.

My therapist rubbed my sun-kissed skin with jasmine- and grapefruit-scented scrub, before a gentle massage and facial with hydrating cucumber and soothing aloe. One morning, while golfers tried for their best shot, I attended a fashion preview of Dior’s most recent resort line, showcased in one of Punta Mita’s deluxe condominiums (complete with its own jawdropping infinity plunge pool).

The festival is designed to delight at every turn, as if at the precise moment a guest might begin to feel hungry or thirsty, there’s already an event planned to satisfy. One such festival highlights was a coastal lunch, held at Kupuri Beach Club, which is normally only open to Punta Mita residents. That day, Champagne flowed from the Veuve Clicquot bar, and guests could choose a more formal four-course meal by Calgarybased chef Matthias Fong or a more casual tasting by the sand, with delicious dishes from Dallas-based chef Abraham Salum and others.

The event left me longing to return, and I can only imagine that Ms. Woolf would approve.

After having dined so well at the American Express Punta Mita Gourmet & Golf, I could think nothing but happy thoughts of the destination’s natural beauty, I loved the genuine hospitality of the staff, and I slept like a baby, with the sound of the Pacific’s waves crashing outside my window.

Puesto que el festival está concebido como un evento en el que puedes elegir tu propio estilo de aventura, algunos fiesteros (como yo) optamos por días llenos de experiencias culinarias, las cuales incluyeron clases de cocina, degustaciones de vino y tequila, así como comidas combinadas con licores cuidadosamente seleccionados.

Mientras tanto, los aficionados al golf jugaron sobre dos espectaculares campos diseñados por Jack Nicklaus, con muchos hoyos adyacentes o frente al Pacífico. Lorena Ochoa, la atleta más condecorada de México, jugó al lado de los invitados en agradecimiento por las ganancias destinadas a su fundación, la cual promueve la educación y las actividades familiares saludables.

Como no soy golfista, aproveché un beneficio del evento al pasar una relajante mañana en el Remède Spa by The St. Regis Punta Mita Resort con un ritual de dos horas llamado Hisi (que significa “curandero de sueños” en cora, una lengua uto-azteca). Mi terapeuta frotó mi bronceada piel con un exfoliante perfumado con jazmín y toronja, antes de darme un suave masaje y hacerme un facial con pepino hidratante y aloe calmante. Otra mañana, mientras los golfistas intentaban dar su mejor golpe, asistí a un fashion preview de la línea resort más reciente de Dior, la cual fue exhibida en uno de los condominios de lujo de Punta Mita (con una espectacular alberca de efecto infinito).

El festival está diseñado para disfrutarse a cada instante, como si en el momento preciso en que un invitado comienza a sentir hambre o sed, ya hubiera un evento planeado para satisfacerlo.

Uno de los aspectos más destacados de este festival fue una comida celebrada en Kupuri Beach Club. Ese día, el champagne fluyó del bar Veuve Clicquot y los invitados pudieron elegir entre un elegante menú de cuatro tiempos (la cual fue ofrecida por Matthias Fong, chef proveniente de Calgary) o una degustación más casual sobre la arena (con deliciosos platillos preparados por Abraham Salum, chef proveniente de Dallas junto con otros talentos).

El evento me hizo desear volver y solo puedo imaginar que la señora Woolf lo aprobaría.

Después de haber disfrutado de la excelente gastronomía en el American Express Punta Mita Gourmet & Golf, a mi mente solamente llegaron pensamientos positivos sobre la belleza natural del destino, así como la genuina hospitalidad del personal. Dormí como un bebé, con el sonido de las olas del Pacífico rompiendo afuera de mi ventana.

he debut of Golf Kitchen, a brilliantly designed food, drink and golf event, was not only sensational but also an overwhelming success that earned it a place on the annual Punta Mita event calendar. The celebration presented in collaboration with Golf Kitchen Magazine transcended the game from on course play to include a golf club kitchen focus of deliciously creative cuisine.

Showcased was a dazzling display of artistry from a star-studded lineup of innovative and talented international guest and resident chefs. Coming together to share their imaginative culinary talents resulted in an off the chart, melt-in-your-mouth profusion of tasty dishes.

El debut de Golf Kitchen, un evento de gastronomía y golf brillantemente diseñado, no solo fue sensacional, sino también un éxito abrumador que le valió un lugar en el calendario anual de Punta Mita. La celebración, presentada en colaboración con Golf Kitchen Magazine, trascendió del campo de juego para incluir un enfoque deliciosamente creativo de la cocina de club de golf, el cual consistió en una deslumbrante exhibición realizada por una alineación estelar de innovadores y talentosos chefs invitados y residentes. Reunirse para compartir su sabiduría resultó en una profusión de deliciosos platillos que deleitaron el paladar de los invitados.

A passion for golf, food, drink and ambiance flourished during the event at beach clubs, restaurants and the Punta Mita Golf Club where breakfasts, a brunch, lunches and dinners were savored. Participating residents and guests took their places as players, competitors, chefs and diners to appreciate and enjoy a four-day party at this paradise of splendor that some call home and others a favorite tropical place to visit. Golf Kitchen is likely to become a most anticipated food and golf event each year.

From the first tee shot of a 4-hole, chef only, shoot out competition on Pacifico golf course for the Golf Kitchen Chef’s Cup to the closing Sunday brunch, the enthusiasm of guest and resident chefs was evident, as was the appreciation that swept over all who participated in this spectacular event. The Chef’s Cup winner, Doug Blair, rolled in a lengthy birdie on the final hole to beat José Carlos Fábregas. They along with other competing chefs put on a splendid golfing exhibition that was followed by impressive culinary performances over the next few days in kitchens throughout Punta Mita.

Thursday’s opening dinner reception at the Residents’ Beach Club was a sensational al fresco affair. Attendees sat at tables perched perpendicular to the-adjacent beach, allowing for a clear view of the sun as it slipped gently into the sea. The night’s culinary adventure conjured an anticipation for menu offerings that would be served up on subsequent days. At individual stations, each chef delivered delightful dishes reflecting their respective golf club.

The two days of competition included twoperson teams in an 18-hole scramble at the Bahia course on day one and an 18-hole best ball round at the Pacifico course the second day.

The meandering routings incorporate holes with ocean views, rolling terrain and bunker guarded greens, ample fairways and landing areas from multiple tees that are well suited for a variety of skill levels. Pacifico is known for its par three hole #3B, Tail of the Whale, with the world’s only natural ocean island green. Bahia provides ground contours sloping around greens, some guarded by many bunkers. They served as challenging venues befitting tournament play for the Golf Kitchen Cup and Chefs’ Cup.

I had the pleasure of playing the first round alongside the eventual winning team of Punta Mita residents, Dermott and Martina O’Flanagan, who shot lights out. Second place went to Juan Carlos and David Rosales while Fernando José Arrangoiz and Eduardo “Lalo” Palazuelos finished third.

I particularly enjoyed a colorful, delicious threecourse Latin American meal by Uruguayan Chef Gastón Yelicich at Sufi Ocean Club’s Sufito, a picturesque open-air oceanside kitchen and dining spot at the water’s edge. The masterfully prepared repast included an appetizer of grilled prawns and octopus with a white bean, tomato and olive salad. The rack of lamb entrée with chives and roasted sweet potatoes followed.

Dessert was grilled pineapple topped with lemon curd and crispy coconut. Paired wines were Alamos Chardonnay and Catena Malbec.

La cena de apertura al aire libre en el Residents’ Beach Club fue sensacional. Los asistentes, sentados en mesas ubicadas perpendicularmente a la playa adyacente, pudieron apreciar el espectacular atardecer. La aventura culinaria de la noche evocó con anticipación el menú que se serviría en los días posteriores. Con todos estos elementos a su favor, es probable que Golf Kitchen se convierta en el evento gastronómico y de golf más esperado del año.

Desde el primer golpe en el tee de salida de cuatro hoyos, solo para los chefs (el cual dio inicio a la Golf Kitchen Chef’s Cup en el campo de golf Pacífico); hasta el brunch de clausura del domingo, el entusiasmo de los chefs invitados y residentes fue evidente, así como la apreciación que prevaleció en todos los que participaron durante este espectacular evento. Doug Blair, ganador de la Chef’s Cup, rodó un largo birdie sobre el hoyo final para vencer a José Carlos Fábregas. Magistralmente preparada, incluía un aperitivo de gambas y pulpo a la plancha con ensalada de alubias blancas, jitomate y aceitunas. El platillo principal consistió en un rack de cordero con cebollines y camotes asados. El postre era una piña asada cubierta con crema de limón y coco crujiente.

Los vinos para acompañar fueron Alamos Chardonnay y Catena Malbec.

A relaxing and festive closing dinner from Chef Lalo Palazuelos, Chef Gastón Yelicich, host Chef Pato Pérsico and staff brought together essences of Mexico, Uruguay and Argentina in a Latin fusion. The chefs’ passions inspired a glorious meal at Kupuri Beach Club amid the sensory ambiance of open-air dining. Chef Lalo’s appetizer of Milpa soup served in a squash bowl was the harbinger of flavors to come. Chef Gastón’s tasty striped bass in a prosciutto crust with steamed green beans, peas, artichokes and a hollandaise sauce followed. The beat just kept on coming with another main dish prepared by Chef Pato. His Margret de Canard in Oaxacan black mole with prickly pears, foie gras, fresh sorrel and arugula salad were equally delicious.

Chef Pato’s oh so good desserts were a white chocolate ganache; a vanilla, green and orange lemon zest, rum, pineapple compote; a coconut dacquoise and Fior Di Latte ice cream.

The laid-back farewell Sunday brunch at Kupuri Beach Club was one more palate pleasing feast.

It embodied a comprehensive, assorted buffet presented by Chef Pato Pérsico and his culinary team that was special by itself, but guest chefs took the brunch to yet another level with additional creations.

Punta Mita is the consummate destination and setting for a premier golf and food event. Its facilities and variety of places for food, drink, sports, beach and water access in a lovely tropical environment makes the location ideal for hosting a Golf Kitchen extravaganza.

Imbedded in the philosophy and attitude of Punta Mita is a genuine appreciation and passion for chefs’ culinary skills. This combination was advantageous in facilitating an immersion into all aspects of the inaugural 2018 Golf Kitchen event.

Una relajada y festiva cena de clausura preparada por los chefs Lalo Palazuelos y Gastón Yelicich, así como por el chef anfitrión Pato Pérsico y su equipo, reunió en un mismo lugar a las esencias de México, Uruguay y Argentina en una exquisita fusión latina. Las pasiones de los chefs inspiraron una espectacular experiencia culinaria en Kupuri Beach Club. La entrada del chef Lalo, la sopa de milpa servida en un tazón de calabaza, fue el heraldo de los sabores por venir. Siguió el chef Gastón con su lubina rayada en una corteza de prosciutto con ejotes, chícharos y alcachofas al vapor con salsa holandesa. Llegó el platillo principal preparado por el chef Pato: magret de canard en mole negro de Oaxaca con tuna, foie gras y ensalada fresca de acedera con arúgula. Los deliciosos postres del chef Pato fueron una ganache de chocolate blanco; una ralladura de vainilla, cáscara de limón verde y naranja, ron y compota de piña; así como un coco dacquoise con helado Fior Di Latte. Los vinos para acompañar fueron Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay y Gran Reserva Shiraz de Casa Madero.

Punta Mita truly does have a strong sense of community, not just created by sponsored events, galas and charity functions held throughout the year in our many beautiful venues, but the organic connections of neighbors meeting neighbors, and neighbors becoming friends. Nine, Wine & Dine is a perfect example of our residents creating community bonds and we spoke to the founder of the group, Dermott O’Flanagan, to tell us how this Punta Mita tradition was born.

A GAME, A GLASS, A GROUP….

“9 years ago, my wife Martina and I invited some new friends for some Sunday afternoon golf.

We met up at the club, played nine holes and then adjourned to the Residents’ Beach Club for dinner and, of course, a glass of wine - and so Nine, Wine & Dine was born.”

CREATING CONNECTIONS, CREATING COMMUNITY….

“Punta Mita is our home, getting together with friends and neighbors and having some fun is what it is all about. Our four-person scramble golf format ensures that golfers and non-golfers can all join in, regardless of their level of play.

Each week, we mix and match the groups, so everyone can meet and socialize, whether you are an “old timer” or a “newbie”, you quickly meet all your fellow residents.”

“Nine, Wine & Dine is about having fun, but that’s not to say there isn’t some competitive spirit. Years ago, Sandy and Dallas Howe generously commissioned a Waterford Crystal Perpetual Trophy which is presented to the winning team each week. Martina donated the Punta Mita Whale Trophy, presented to the person who gets closest to the pin, for an

NINE, WINE & DINE extra little competitive edge to the proceedings.

Catherine Schmidt took us by surprise when she once presented us with a unique beach bag full of goodies, and Robyn and Gordon Ritchie and Brian Felesky became very popular sponsors last season when they presented bottles of Tequila to the winning teams for several weeks.

We never know what surprise might come next, and the best-recorded team score is 6 under par, so everyone needs to keep swinging.”

A TRADITION TAKES HOLD….

“Phillipe, Antonio and the staff at Residents’ Beach Club have been wonderful over the years, with great food and drinks, decorating the bar on special occasions and helping us celebrate at every possible opportunity. To mix it up, we occasionally go to dinner at The St. Regis Punta Mita Resort after our nine holes, and Jimmy, David and the resort always take great care of us, even providing us with complimentary champagne. They have really helped make Nine, Wine & Dine what it is today.

The famous “Tail of the Whale”, the only natural island green in the world, is a visually intimidating shot and one that can be made even more difficult by the prevailing wind direction and a possible back spin location. However, there are a few secrets to playing this hole.

The trouble is all in the front, so make sure you have enough club to carry the ball to the back-middle portion of the green. Don’t worry if you hit the ball long, the bunkers will stop it from going too far.

When playing this hole, always use a tee but raise it a little higher than you normally would. This extra little bit of tee height helps launch the ball higher and carry it further, helping to avoid the water short.

Focus on tempo and a firm hit, so you catch the ball solidly.

La famosa “Cola de la Ballena”, único green en el mundo sobre una isla natural, es un tiro visualmente intimidante que puede hacerse aún más difícil por la dirección predominante del viento y un posible efecto hacia atrás. Sin embargo, existen algunos secretos para jugar este hoyo.

The Tee Shot With Water To One Side

BAHÍA 17 Hole 17 at Bahia reminds me of the 18th at Sawgrass and the 18th at Doral, where you can do anything but hit the ball leftward off the tee.

All three holes have plenty of room to the right, but sometimes the water seems to attract your ball like a magnet!

Tee the ball up on the side of the trouble you are trying to avoid and aim away from it. This makes it much harder to hit the ball into the water.

Make your last look towards where you want the ball to end up, not at where you don’t want it to go. Your body gravitates towards the last thing you see before you swing, so if your last glace is at the water, it’s amazing how often you will end up hitting the ball exactly there.

Focus on your ball’s starting direction by picking a spot just in front of the ball and make sure you send the ball over that spot when you make your swing.

There is nothing more challenging than two putting when your ball needs to circumvent big slopes and mounds to find the hole. As we know, Bahia possesses larger and more undulating greens than Pacifico, so your lag putting must be precise or it will be a long day on the links.

Understand the correlation between line and speed - the softer you hit the ball, the more gravity will pull the ball down the slope, and vice versa, so before you pick your line, decide if your pace is going to be softer or harder.

Always give yourself a touch more break than you need. We want putts dying towards the hole, not rolling away from them, and by playing too much break you automatically have the ball falling towards the hole during the end of its revolutions.

Maintain solid impact with correct impact alignments. Mishits only make the putts worse, and in this motion, you should hit the sweet spot often. Sometimes, you need to remind yourself to hit it solid on those longer, big breaking putts.

We all have struggles on the golf course, but if you focus on avoiding silly mistakes, you will play better and avoid those blow-up holes once and for all!

The facility boasts an indoor/outdoor climatecontrolled hitting area, complete with a V1 four-camera digital video system, Trackman 4 Launch Monitors and a SAM PuttLab to complement all areas of instruction. Private and covered practice stations, a modern wedge facility for shots ranging from 10 to 100 yards, renovations to the current back tee and improvements to the existing chipping green including greenside bunkers, have created a complete academy for novice players to build skills and increase the consistency of their play, or for tournament-level players to fine-tune specific areas of their game.

Some of the most exciting aspects of the new Punta Mita Golf Academy are the state-ofthe-art technological instructional tools. First, we need to know, how did a lawyer find himself as the Director of Golf in Punta Mita?

Well, I became a golf professional after I finished my undergraduate degree in Colorado and I intended to take a year off before going to law school, but it ended up turning into four years of working as a golf pro. Ultimately, I was very close to becoming a head professional but I didn’t want that to be my only career path, so I left and went to law school, passing the bar in California, and practicing law in both States for about 5 years total. But, in the end, I decided that I preferred being in the golf business, so for 2 1/2 years I did both - I was a golf professional in the summer in Colorado and a lawyer in the winter. Eventually, I realized I wasn’t going to accomplish much in either direction that way, I needed to focus on one or the other, and I decided I wanted it to be golf.

Tell us a little about John McIntyre.

Who I am is probably very much reflected in the choices I made. I’m from the Midwest, of Scottish and German descent. I grew up in Michigan and Ohio primarily, but I lived all over the States and abroad, and travelled a lot because I love to travel. I have been married for 7 years to my wife Jackie, who shares that passion, and we’ve had a lot of fun travelling together and living in different places. We moved to Cancun about 4 months after we were married and spent a year there, which was a great adventure as a newly married couple, and it opened my golf experiences which led me to be here in Punta Mita, which we love.

And as a child? Were you mischievous?

You know, my mother still claims that I was the bad influence on my brother when we were little, but my brother is 6 years older than I am! So is that mischievous? I like to think that says more about good leadership skills than bad behavior!

But, no, not really, we were pretty good kids, in reality.

How was it that you found yourself in Punta Mita?

I had left my most recent position and was still in touch and networking with different friends in the industry, Justin Henderson being one, as he and I had worked together at a club in Vail, Colorado. I congratulated him when he took the position here in Punta Mita, as I had been here for a wedding in 2016 so knew it was a fantastic location. About a year later, he contacted when Phil announced that he was moving on, so I contacted the Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita, and here I am. Very happily, I must say.

Being so well-traveled, what do you think sets Punta Mita apart?

It is an amazing place... truly, truly special, I think what makes it so exceptional is the geography.

Having so much water frontage is phenomenal from a real estate and community standpoint, but particularly as a golf destination. The gorgeous and challenging lay-out of the courses with those incredible ocean views is extremely unique. Most of the famous coastal golf courses only have 3 or 4… maybe 5 holes… that are on the water, so for us to have seven or more holes on both courses with ocean views or directly waterfront, is really something special.

Había dejado mi puesto más reciente y aún estaba en contacto y haciendo networking con diferentes amigos de la industria. Justin Henderson era uno de ellos, ya que él y yo habíamos trabajado juntos en un club en Vail, Colorado. Lo felicité cuando tomó la posición aquí en Punta Mita, ya que en 2016 yo ya había estado aquí cuando vine a una boda, así que sabía que era un lugar fantástico.

Is there anything you find yourself missing from the States?

Well, I lived in Colorado for a very long time and it has a pretty fantastic climate, as least for my liking. I have a feeling that I am going to miss those Colorado summers.

What do you consider your greatest achievement in golf?

Hmmmm, I’ve made three holes-in-one, though I’m honest enough with myself to chalk a lot of that up to luck, so probably not my greatest achievement. You know, to be truthful, I think my greatest achievement is having created a network of cherished friends and colleagues that I communicate with daily.

And in life?

Really, I would say the same. I’ve worked hard over the years to create an amazing group of friends and family, and we see each other often.

We make the effort to get together regularly and to me, that is what makes life special.

Do you prefer to golf with people who you know will be good players or with people you will have the most fun with?

I like to play with all kinds of golfers and a great part of my job is having the opportunity play with all our members, and generally, everybody plays better when they are having fun, so that is a big part of it. But, I like to gamble a bit, and usually better golfers do as well. So really, it just depends on the day and the group.

What are 3 life lessons you have learned from golf?

Just three? Patience, perseverance and the ability to laugh at yourself! In all seriousness, I think golf is amazing because it reveals a lot about your character. I think you learn a tremendous amount about yourself and other people when you play golf.

Your dream team for a foursome?

Maybe an obvious answer, but yes, I would like to play with Tiger, because he’s my favorite golfer and probably the best golfer in history, so it would be fun to watch him play for 18 holes.

Maybe I would mix it up…. maybe a singer?

I know that Darius Rucker of Hootie and the Blowfish is a good golfer, so he might be fun.

An actor? Probably George Clooney, everyone wants to hang out with Clooney. Can we actually set this up? How do we make this happen?

What is your vision for the Punta Mita Golf Academy?

Creating a Punta Mita learning center is an integral part of the bigger picture for our golfspecific members. It’s going to give us the ability and flexibility to invite other top 100 instructors here and I think the PMGA is a huge step in positioning Punta Mita even further as one of the top golf destinations in the world.

Jorge Campos and Corey Pavin, who are regularly seen in Punta Mita and at the Punta Mita Gourmet & Golf, sat down to talk about how they view golf. How different can a former professional soccer player and a former professional golfer be?

When did you start playing golf and who introduced you to the game?

Jorge: It was in 1998, when we were in France for the World Cup. Our hotel had a golf course with a driving range and I was curious to learn.

In fact, Manuel Lapuente, who was the technical director of the Mexican team at that time, introduced me to the game right there.

Corey: When I was six, my parents introduced me to golf. My two older brothers played, and I tagged along.

What has been your proudest golf accomplishment?

Jorge: Although I have participated in many tournaments and have won several, the most important thing has been the friends I have made around the world thanks to golf.

Corey: Winning the US Open was certainly my biggest win and it was a great honor to be captain of the 2010 Ryder Cup team.

Which course is on your bucket list?

Jorge: The Masters in Augusta, Georgia.

Corey: There are many! Quite a few in Ireland and Scotland.

Your dream foursome and why?

Jorge: Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus and Rory Mcllory, to understand the evolution of golf and how it has changed.

Corey: Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson and Bobby Jones would be a very nice group.

If you could be any famous golfer for a day, who would you be and why?

Jorge: Without a doubt, Bobby Jones because he was an amateur player who could play like the professionals. An underdog, but with talent!

Corey: I wouldn’t want to be anyone else. I’m not sure if I’m “famous”, but I’m very content with what I have accomplished in the game of golf.

What is Punta Mita for you?

Jorge: One of the most beautiful destinations in Mexico! I have participated in several Punta Mita Gourmet & Golf because for me, it is one of the best golf and lifestyle events in the world.

Corey: Punta Mita to me is a place I can go and relax and take a true vacation. Beaches, pools, great service and wonderful people make Punta Mita a place I will come back to again and again.

¿Cuándo empezaste a jugar golf y quién te introdujo al juego?

Jorge: Fue en 1998, cuando estábamos concentrados en Francia para jugar el Mundial. Nuestro hotel tenía un campo de golf con un driving range y ahí me nació la curiosidad por aprenderlo. De hecho, Manuel Lapuente, quien era el director técnico de la selección mexicana en ese momento, me introdujo al juego ahí mismo.

Corey: Cuando tenía 6 años mis padres me introdujeron al juego. Mis dos hermanos mayores también jugaron, pero yo continué en el ámbito profesional. ¿Cuál ha sido tu mayor logro de golf sobre el campo?

Jorge: Aunque he participado en muchos torneos y he ganado varios, lo más importante han sido los amigos que he hecho alrededor del mundo gracias al golf.

Corey: Sin duda, mi mayor victoria fue haber ganado el Abierto de Estados Unidos y fue un gran honor haber sido el capitán del equipo de la Ryder Cup en 2010. ¿Cuál campo está en tu bucket list?

JORGE CAMPOS Originally from Acapulco, Guerrero, Jorge Campos had a long professional soccer career and is considered one of the best goalkeepers the Mexican national soccer team has had. With quick reactions and agility, he was known as a unique and versatile player, whether playing in goal or as center forward. “El Brody”, as he is affectionately known, was recognized by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics as the third best goalkeeper in the world in 1993. After his retirement following the 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup, Campos joined the Mexican National team as Assistant Manager. He is currently a commentator on TV Azteca and an avid golfer.

Originario de Acapulco, Guerrero, Jorge Campos es considerado como el portero más espectacular que ha tenido la selección mexicana de fútbol. Su calidad en el manejo del área, veloz reacción y agilidad en cada uno de sus lances lo hacían un jugador único y versátil, cualidades que también explotaba cuando juagaba como centrodelantero. “El Brody”, como se le conoce cariñosamente, fue reconocido por la Federación Internacional de Historia y Estadística de Fútbol como el tercer mejor portero del mundo en 1993.

Durante su retiro después de la Copa del Mundo Corea-Japón 2002, Campos se incorporó como auxiliar técnico del representativo mexicano que disputó el Mundial de Alemania 2006.

Actualmente se desempeña como comentarista en TV Azteca y es un entusiasta del golf.

COREY PAVIN

Known affectionately as “The Bulldog”, Corey Pavin won two gold medals at the 1981 Maccabiah Games (the Jewish Olympics in Israel) and turned professional the following year. He won his first PGA Tour victory at the Houston Open in 1984 and won at least one PGA Tour event or international tour almost every year following, spending more than 150 weeks in the Top 10 of the Official World Golf Rankings between 1986 and 1997. His career high was his victory at the 1995 US Open and, in 2002, he was inducted into the Ventura County Hall of Fame.

Corey was captain of the U.S. team at the 2010 Ryder Cup in Celtic Manor in Newport, Wales and has 15 PGA Tour wins to his credit.

Conocido cariñosamente como “El Bulldog”, Corey Pavin ganó dos medallas de oro en los Juegos Maccabiah de 1981 (los Juegos Olímpicos Judíos en Israel) y al siguiente año se convirtió en profesional. A partir de ese momento, se estableció en el deporte y obtuvo su primera victoria PGA Tour durante el Abierto de Houston en 1984. Pavin ganó al menos un evento PGA Tour o en tour internacional casi todos los años durante la siguiente década. Waking Up the Inner Waterman Self-confidence is key in maximizing skill development and Punta Mita Surf Camp was the perfect place to discover it. Drawing from their own experiences, all three instructors inspired students to face their fears with confidence. Participants discovered their own inner waterman, becoming like Fernando Stalla, believing that mastering the waves is not only a matter of ability, but attitude.

A Family United Sense of community is another thing that is synonymous with both Punta Mita and surf culture. More Than Surfing Punta Mita Surf Camp was not only about surfing. The exciting program incorporated several sports including longboard, SUP, outrigger canoes, foil surfing, free diving, Jetski and spearfishing, among other activities, both on land and at sea. Despierta el waterman que hay en ti La confianza en uno mismo es clave para desarrollar las habilidades al máximo y este surf camp fue el lugar perfecto para descubrirlo.

Aficionados al surf y a otros deportes acuáticos (independientemente de si eran principiantes, de nivel medio o expertos), demostraron que todos podemos ser un waterman como Fernando Stalla, quien siempre ha demostrado que dominar las olas a bordo de la tabla no solo es cuestión de habilidad, sino de actitud.

Por ello, a través de sus propias vivencias y experiencias, nuestros tres maestros inspiraron a los participantes a afrontar sus miedos frente a las olas con gran seguridad.

Una gran familia Otro de los pilares que une a Punta Mita con el surf es el sentido de comunidad, pues son pocos los deportes en que sus aficionados forman una comunidad tan íntegra como en el surf o SUP. El amor por las olas y el mar fue la excusa perfecta para propiciar la unión entre participantes, maestros, staff, familiares y amigos durante las diversas y fascinantes actividades, resultando en una experiencia repleta de perfecta armonía que ninguno de los asistentes olvidará.

Más que surf Punta Mita Surf Camp no solo se trató de surf. Su emocionante programa fue ideal para practicar infinidad de deportes acuáticos, incluyendo longboard, SUP, canoas con batangas, foil surf, buceo libre o de apnea, jetski y pesca submarina, entre otras actividades (también en tierra firme), las cuales entusiasmaron hasta al más exigente de los participantes. Además, mediante dinámicas muy amenas, los asistentes recibieron capacitación sobre seguridad en el agua, una cuestión de suma importancia en este tipo de prácticas.

Born in Fiji but a member of the Mexican National Team, Fernando Stalla is one of the biggest SUP stars in the world, currently ranked in the Top 10 globally. A huge fan of Punta Mita, for Stalla, the sea is his home and his passion, saying, “it’s what gives me happiness, adventure and friendships... it gives me life”. This is the passionate philosophy he engrained in each of the students during the Punta Mita Surf Camp.

This stand-up paddle camp is designed for children ages 5 to 12, teaching SUP skills and water safety through confidence-boosting drills, games and activities in a non-competitive, inclusive environment, designed to foster selfesteem and teamwork. But more than just another sports camp, SUPKids takes advantage of nature’s classroom, teaching kids about marine ecology and how they can help protect it with fun, hands-on learning experiences about topics like plastic waste, climate change and aquatic eco-systems.

This unique camp is offered in 1 or 5-day sessions, and is the perfect way for kids to get active, leave their phones and tablets behind, make new friends and build core values that will stay with them for life.

Kids can register for the full 5-day experience or just for a single day. No prior experience with SUP, surfing or sailing is required, but it is recommended that campers be confident swimmers.

Mita.Co, a delicious new dining experience inspired by the culinary culture of Mexican street food, has rolled into Punta Mita. It is estimated that in Mexico at least 75 % of the population eat traditional street fare at least once a week. In Mexico City, home to over 21 million people, street vendors offer everything imaginable, from snacks and drinks, to massive sandwiches or fully plated meals. Street-side eateries come in all types - stalls, small trucks, under umbrellas, and serving from carts, bicycles or open windows set into the sides of buildings – and no trip to Mexico is complete without at least one meal, and hopefully more than one, spent sampling the incredible street cuisine that has captured the attention of foodie culture around the world.

Mita.Co is bringing some of the best Mexican street food to Punta Mita. Tamales, quesadillas, huaraches, flautas, sopes, carnitas, tortas, elotes & esquites, tostadas and amazing birria are just some of the fantastic tastes waiting for you… and leave room for churros, of course.

From Punta Mita’s very beginning, the Residents’ Beach Club has been a special place – the social heart of our community where residents would catch up with friends and neighbors, enjoy fresh seafood caught by local fishermen just hours earlier, sip a Margarita under the warm Mexican sun or share the vibrant colors of a spectacular sunset together.

Desde el inicio de Punta Mita, el Residents’ Beach Club se convirtió en el corazón social de nuestra comunidad, ese era el lugar en el que los residentes se reunían con amigos y vecinos para disfrutar de la pesca del día o bien, para tomarse la clásica Margarita, mientras disfrutaban los vibrantes colores de las espectaculares puestas de sol.

It was, and will always be, in the heart of many who have visited Punta Mita - a club where we saw our children and grandchildren grow up, where new friends and memorable moments were made, from the very beginning of the Punta Mita journey. It is exactly that same magic we have strived to maintain as we gave our beloved Residents’ Beach Club a welldeserved facelift and bestowed a new name, Pacifico Beach Club, to honor its unique setting overlooking the Pacific Ocean that is so special to our visitors and residents.

Estuvo y siempre estará en el corazón de muchos de los que han visitado Punta Mita, se trata de un club donde vimos crecer a nuestros hijos y nietos, donde se hicieron nuevos amigos y momentos memorables, prácticamente desde el comienzo del viaje de Punta Mita. The new look and feel of the space were designed by Antonio Martins of San Francisco and brought to life with furnishings from Hadad in Guadalajara. The entire kitchen was upgraded, much to the pleasure of Chef Pato Persico and his culinary team, who look forward to presenting guests with unforgettable dining experiences in the seasons to come.

We welcome you to Pacifico Beach Club to continue creating the moments and memories that make Punta Mita truly special, in one of our community’s most iconic locations.

MEET EMMA BOUTIN Isla Mita’s founder, Emma Boutin, left her hometown of Montreal, Canada, at 19 years of age, traveling the world, until she discovered Punta Mita. Attracted to the natural beautify of our destination, Emma was also drawn to how the local culture values women and the importance placed upon love, family and community in Mexico. After having lost her mother and brother in a short space of time, it was in Punta Mita that Emma was able to recreate her sense of family, building roots in our community with her partner and her son, Massimo.

With state-of-the-art technology and equipment, an Emergency Room, 24-hour ambulance service and house calls, full lab and x-ray capabilities, outpatient and clinic care, impatient and hospital admission services, dual operating rooms and a talented team of physicians, nurses and specialists, the Punta Mita Hospital is an outstanding facility and invaluable addition to our community. We spoke with Dr. Najmabadi to catch up on the latest additions to hospital services and talk about his future goals.

A Fully Comprehensive Medical Center Punta Mita Hospital is a full-service medical center, now offering a complete Intensive Care Unit. The ICU provides concentrated medical treatment for patients with severe and life-threatening illnesses or injuries which require constant monitoring and support from specialized medical staff, equipment and medications. In addition to the opening of the ICU, the hospital now provides hemodynamic monitoring in the operating room to ensure adequate tissue perfusion and oxygen delivery, as well as to predict and detect hemodynamic instability, and a new cardiology lab which allows for complete evaluations with a cardiologist and all lab work and tests available onsite.

The hospital also recently acquired a 64 slide Siemens CT Scan, the most advanced CT Scan in the region. This equipment allows medical staff to diagnose abdominal, cardiac and brain conditions, to evaluate strokes, coronary angiograms or to scan for abdominal or pelvic lesions. Equipped with the most advanced software in Mexico, the CT Scan is also equipped with FAST CARE technology and CARE Child technology, which limits radiation exposure to the lowest possible levels, offers maximum speed, and has extraordinary imaging capability and protocols for scanning the most vulnerable of patients.

Además de la inauguración de la nueva UCI, el hospital ahora provee monitoreo hemodinámico en la sala de operaciones para garantizar la adecuada perfusión de tejidos y administración de oxígeno, además de predecir y detectar inestabilidades hemodinámicas, así como un nuevo laboratorio de cardiología que permite realizar evaluaciones completas con un cardiólogo y todos los trabajos de laboratorio y tests realizados in situ.

Recientemente, el hospital también adquirió un Escáner de Tomografía Computarizada (TC) de Siemens, siendo uno de los escáneres CT más avanzados en la región. Este equipo permite al staff médico diagnosticar afecciones abdominales, cardiacas y cerebrales, evaluar derrames, angiografías coronarias y escanear para detectar lesiones abdominales o pélvicas. Equipado con el software más avanzado en México, el Escáner CT también incluye tecnología FAST CARE y CARE Child, que limita la exposición a la radiación a los niveles más bajos posibles, ofreciendo la máxima velocidad, capacidad de imagenología y protocolos para escanear a los pacientes más vulnerables.

Creating Mutual Support Systems Realizing that the Punta Mita community wanted to support the growth of the hospital, Dr. Najmabadi and his team found a symbiotic way for people to help fund the hospital while receiving exceptional benefits for their healthcare needs through Gold and Silver Membership plans. The Silver Membership is just $500 USD per year and offers a 10 % discount on lab and X-ray work and 20 % off a wide range of other medical services.

Building Together Dr. Najmabadi realized that a project of this magnitude would require community support and through two foundations and the generosity of our community, his vision for the hospital has come to life. It’s an easy way to give and as Dr. Najmabadi said, “To continue doing what we are doing we need support from local businesses and the community through donations and memberships, so we can continue to add patient services and equipment for the best possible medical care for our community and local neighbors.”

Staying true to one of the most important parts of Dr. Najmabadi’s vision of exceptional care for everyone in our community, the Mezcales Clinic offers income-based pricing for consultations, allowing patients to receive services at 50% to 75% lower costs through aid subsidies provided by the Punta Mita Hospital Foundation.

Since 2011, the free-range El Paraiso farm has been producing incredible cheeses including panela, mozzarella, goat cheese and aged cheddar, as well as farm-fresh milk, yogurt, cream, jocoque, kefir, butter and more. In the winter season, they also offer a selection of organic salad mixes and vegetables, or try the kefir water or Kambucha, which is fermented with fresh fruit right in the shop. With an eye to sustainable practices in both farming techniques and bringing products to market, Productos Granja El Paraiso is a beautiful place to discover healthy, organic products not found elsewhere in our region.

The Lo de Marcos Tianguis, which is held every Saturday in November through March, is a farmers and craft market where you can find an extensive array of local organic garden harvests, specialty foods, unique pieces from local artisans, fresh baked goods, jewelry and much more. As much a community social event as a shopping experience, the market gathers local friends and neighbors to do their weekly shopping while listening to live music and enjoying great food like pozole, tamales, smoothies and rich coffee from the numerous food stands. This year, the market will also include a new Holistic Healing Section where visitors can discover the health and wellness benefits found in locally grown herbs and products or have a personal consultation with local healers. It is a special way to participate in local community culture while finding some unique souvenirs of your visit and delicious items for your Punta Mita kitchen.
