SEYMOUR V MANSFIELD

No respite for Mansfield this weekend after facing Mooroopna in round one and an improved Shepparton United last weekend.

The Eagles managed just five goals in the first and second terms, facing a 13-goal half-time deficit

They were much better in the second half, scoring 15 goals on the back of great work from Alexandra Ball and Molly Rekers.

Emily Hutchins and Amelia Charlton will again be under pressure as they face an inform, and tall, Lions goaling duo.

One of that pair, Ruby Martin, started on fire for the Lions in their win against Shepp Swans on Saturday She shot 11 first-quarter goals and finished with 34 of her team’s 56 goals

A week earlier Martin was at goal keeper when the Lions beat the weekend’s giant killer, Rochester. Elle Fuhrmeister offered support to Martin on Saturday, while coach Casey Adamson was the rock in the mid-court and Bridie Cantwell led the defence.

Seymour was without Eleisha Saunders for the round-two win, but brought back an accomplished midcourt star in Courtney Aldous and had Naomi Fitzpatrick as the key defender

My prediction is for Seymour to take the win by 27 goals.

-Last season the Lions and the Eagles had to wait until Round 11 before they met

There are some good match-ups ahead, with Tahlia Browning, Jessica Dolling and Sophie Carr Paterson due to front up against a Lions midcourt featuring a number of premiership players

LAST TIME THEY MET

Seymour won by 27 goals, 58-31, with 200-gamer Ellie Fuhrmeister shooting 33 goals and Ally Black 21. Seymour finished last season with 10 wins and Mansfield won four games The Lions appear on track for a bigger return in 2025

2pm Saturday at King’s Park, Seymour

DEBUTANTES & MILESTONES

On Saturday Seymour A grade netball captain Ellie Fuhrmeister will receive GVL Life Membership, having qualified for the amazing recognition at the end of 2024 with 200 A Grade games

Ellie’s A Grade journey began back in 2013, straight from the juniors ranks. During this time she has had 8 final appearances, including 3 premierships in 2015, 2019 and 2022 In 2022, Ellie both played and coached the A Grade to success She has also represented the GVL in Interleague competition on three occasions. Her experience and dedication to junior development saw her appointed the coach of the junior GVL squad on two occasions Ellie took on her biggest challenge in 2021 and was appointed A Grade player/coach and held this role until the end of the 2024 season. Ellie continues to be a key player in the A Grade side She is a role model for our junior players

Ellie’s passion for netball is obvious, her dedication to the SFNC is unwavering and she has cemented herself as a legend of our club. Seymour has the chance to put three wins on the board before facing reigning premier Euroa in round four

NETBALL

TATURA v ECHUCA

Echuca was highly competitive in the final three quarters of its game with Euroa in a replay of last year’s grand final.

After scraping home against United in round one the Murray Bombers trailed by 12 goals at quarter-time of the game with Euroa. The margin was 16 at half-time, but just two goals separated the teams in the second half.

Echuca brought Bianca Willis onto the court, in goals, and she shot 17 goals in an impressive display They also brought Bree Hodgson into a defensive post, working with captain Ashlea Hare and Lillie Taylor. Experienced centre Stephanie Vick also increased her output, while Rose Byrne finished with 25 goals for the game in the loss

Tatura brought Hayley Rennie into its squad for the win against Kyabram on Saturday, but it was the defensive unit of Ella Kightly, Mollie Boyle and Zoe Hayes who were their major contributors Kyabram managed just 20 goals for the game as Charlotte Gray and Jasmine Fraser were spoon fed by Elsie Boyer and Julia Clarke. My prediction is for Tatura to take the win by nine goals.

LAST TIME THEY MET

A thrilling 41-all draw in round nine between the top six teams was a season highlight, with Belinda Lees shooting 21 goals and Holly Chadwick the other 20 For Tatura Julia Clarke led the way with 20 goals
