OnAugust7,Australianswillcome togethertocelebrateAgedCareWorkers Day2025,anationalmomenttorecognise theincrediblepeoplewhocareforolder Australianseveryday

Thisyear’stheme,“ThanksforCaring”,isa heartfeltremindertoshowappreciationto thenurses,carers,supportstaff,andallied healthprofessionalswhomakeagedcare compassionate,safe,anddignified. Acrossthecountry,theagedcare workforceincludesmorethan549,000 people,witharound414,000indirectcare rolessuchasRegisteredNurses,Enrolled Nurses,PersonalCareWorkers,andAllied HealthProfessionals

Therestsupportthesectorthrough administration,hotelservices,catering, cleaning,andlifestyleprograms-all essentialtohigh-qualitycaredelivery AtWarramunda,thecelebrationwillbe colourfulandfullofgratitude.Staffwillbe treatedtocupcakesfeaturingtheWeCare logo,balloonsinWarramundacolours, andplentyofwarmrecognitionfrom residentsandfamilies

IfyouaskIsobelAttwoodhowlifeis treatingherthesedays,she’lltellyou withatwinkleinhereye: “There’snotabadthingaboutthe place,really”

SincemovingintoWarramunda Villageinmid-April,Isobelhasfound herselfrightathomeintheJimClark Wing,whereshe’slookedafterwith care,kindness,andjusttheright amountofcheek

“Theyfeedyouwell,comeinthe morningandgetmeoutofbed,”she says “Ienjoybeinglookedafter The activities,theexercises,theattention it’sallgood.”

At98yearsold,Isobelhasearnedthe righttoalittlepampering Butdon’tlet theagefoolyou she’sstillsharp, witty,andfullofstoriesthatcouldfilla book(oratleastaveryentertaining afternoon).

BorninLeongatha,Isobelgrewupona dairyfarminGippsland,whereher fatherworkedthelandandhermother taughtatthelocalschool Infact,her mother’sfirstteachingpostwasat WoreenSchoolin1918,aplacewith deepfamilyties Isobel’smaiden name,Muhleisen,isetchedintolocal history,withthefamilydonatingthe landfortheschoolitself

Thatconnectioncamefullcircle recentlywhenRobHunter,aformer Kyabramite,semi-famousschool teacher,andnowpublishedauthor, visitedWarramundaforaspecial speakingengagement

yearsold,andapart fromafewoverseas adventures,

she’sneverreallyleft “Therewasn’tmuch opportunityuphere,”sherecalls,“but wemadedo”

ShemilkedcowsinMerrigum,raiseda family,andbuiltalifefullofresilience andcommunityspirit

Herfirsthusband,Mac,wasbornin Kyabramandservedinthewar.

Tragically,hediedinacaraccidentin 1956,leavingIsobelawidowwithtwo youngchildren PamandJohn.

“Ihadtogotowork,”shesayssimply Andworkshedid morethan20 yearsattheKyabramCannery,where sheeventuallymethersecond husband,Jack Theymarriedin1976, andtogethertheytravelledtheworld America,England,Germany,Italy, andSicily withJack’scannery connectionsopeningdoorsand guidingtheirway

ButperhapsoneofIsobel’smost iconicrolesinKyabramwasn’tinthe factoryorthefamilyhome itwason thefootpath,sittingoutsidethe BluebrickHotel,sellingraffleticketsfor theUncleBob’sClub

Robhadacloseanddramaticlinkto Woreen hewasateachertherewhen heandseveralstudentswere kidnappedbyafelon,aneventthat madeheadlinesandleftalasting markonthecommunity Isobel,ever thestoryteller,wasfascinatedbythe visitandthesharedhistory,remarking thatWoreencertainlyhaditsfairshare oftales

For25years,IsobelwasthePresident oftheKyabrambranch,raising moneyfortheRoyalChildren’s Hospitalandthelocalchildren’s ward.

Shestartedoffwith“abobaweek,” andendedupwithalegacythatstill echoesthroughthetown.

“AlotofpeoplewouldknowMumfor sittingdownthestreet,”Pamsays “She’dbeoutthereforhours,rainor shine”

AndthentherewasWinCrilly Isobel’sfriendlyrivalinfundraising. WinwastherefortheHenleyproject, whileIsobelflewtheflagforUncle Bob’s.Theysatonoppositesidesof thestreet,eachwiththeirown cause,theirowncrowd,andtheir owncharm.

“Itwasalmostashowdown,”Isobel laughs “Butwewereintandem, really.Justdoingourbit.”

TheUncleBob’sClub,foundedin 1942,wasbuiltontheideaofgiving ashillingaweektohelpchildrenin need Isobelembodiedthatspirit, earningaMeritoriousAwardforher decadesofservice.Atitspeak,the Kyabrambranchhad40members, withconnectionstoNathalia, Bendigo,andShepparton.Though somebrancheshavesinceclosed, thelegacyliveson

BackatWarramunda,Isobel’sdays arefilledwithbingo,visitsfromPam (whojoinsherforbingothreetimesa week),andchatswithfellow residentslikeShirleyMitchell,Alwyn Drysdale,andValCarland “Alotofthelegacyladiesspendtime together,”shesays “We’veallgot stories”

IsobelAttwoodasmanylongtime Kyabramresidentswillknowhere, sittinginthemainstreetbehinda cardtable-sellingraffleticketsfor herbelovedUncleBob’sClub.In 2013shereceivedameritorious serviceaward(below).

She’snotfussedaboutfootytipping. “Don’tknowwhoplayswhoor anything” butshe’salwaysupfora goodlaughandabitofbanter.Her favouritestaffincludeJennyandone ofthenightshiftgirls,whoshesays are“justlovely.”

Isobel’shomefor50yearswason CorriganAvenue,andwhileshe hasn’tseenmuchofKyabram’s recentdevelopment,she’scontent withwheresheisnow “Ihaven’tgot acomplaint,”shesays.“It’sagood placetobe”

Theywantedtomakeadonationin Lois’smemorythatwouldreflecther lifeandhercontributions,andthat wouldenhancelivingatandvisiting Warramundaforthosefollowing Twothemeswereconsistent throughoutLois’life:shewas constantlycreative,andshehada deepappreciationforartistic expressionandobservation Shewas neverfarawayfromweaving,knitting, spinning,embroidering,sewingand painting

Shewasawareofthebeautyofnature, itsoperationasabalancedsystem, andtherespectitisdue.

LoisPalmerwasbornin1925atElmore andgrewuponasheepandwheat farmcalledLochinvar.Shewas capablefromayoungage–taking thefive-mileschoolruninahorseand gigatjusteight–andshoweda lifelongloveoflearning,music,sport anddrama

Shewasacademicallygiftedand trainedatBendigoTeacher’sCollege, beginningherteachingcareerin1945 HerearlypostingsledhertoLancaster, whereshemetKevinHiggs They marriedin1949andraisedfour children,settlinginKyabraminthe mid-1950s James(Jim)arrived

in1950,Gillianin1952,Juliein1954 andAlanin1963

FamilywascentraltoLois,andso toowashercommunity. Shewaspartofestablishing structuredpre-schooleducationat Kyabram,helpingsetupboth FenaughtyStreetandStDavid’s Kindergartens,andservedas

directoratboth Loiswaspartofestablishing structuredpre-schooleducation atFenaughtyStreet. AfterthearrivalofAlanin1963, shebecamethefirstdirectorofSt David'sKindergarten.

Morethan1,000childrenreceived theirearlyeducationunderLois’

care,andmanystillrememberher fondly–asdosomeparentswho occasionallyreceivedagentlewordof advice!

Loiswasactiveacrossmanyspheres–DivisionCommissioneroftheGirl Guides,presidentoftheBusinessand ProfessionalWomen’sClub,long-time bookclubmember,ApexandProbus contributor.

ShewasalsodeeplyinvolvedinSt Andrew’sChurchKyabram,whereshe playedtheorgan,sanginthechoir, providedflowers,taughtSunday School,andservedonvestry–proudly asitsfirstfemalemember.

Despitebeingwidowedinher40sand sufferingseriousinjuriesinaroad accidentin1988,Loisretainedher strength,warmthandhumour Shelivedindependentlyintohermid80s,beforemovingtoWarramunda, whereshewasknownforparticipating fullyineveryavailableactivityand continuingtocontributeconstructively untilherpassingonJune1,2017

TheWarramundaArtCommissionisa tributenotonlytoLois’lifelong creativity,buttoherenduringbeliefin community,nature,andalifewelllived Herlegacywillnowbereflectedinthe wallsofWarramunda–aplaceshe lovedandwherehersisterNell,nowin her100thyear,continuestothrive.

JimmiBuscombeisanacclaimed wildlifeartistwhowillfocuson birdlifespecifictotheKyabram regionthroughtheHiggs supportedcommission.

HespentthreedaysatWarramunda VIllagelastmonthtoworkwithstaff andresidentsaspartoftheproject, whichaimstobringthebeautyofthe region’sbirdlifeindoorsfortheaged careresidentstoenjoy.

HisworkatLyndochLiving becamethesubjectofashort ABCfilm andhasbeencredited withtransformingnotjustthe physicalenvironmentofthe facilitybutalsoresidentwellbeing.
