Tongala’snewestmuralhas beencompleted andit promisestobeoneofthe mostmeaningfuladditions toourtown’sstreetscape. OnMonday,September8, renownedmuralartist

Adnatebeganworkonthe walloftheCommunityBank Tongala,transformingitinto apowerfultributetoSir DougNicholls.

Adnate’sdistinctivestyle, knownforcapturingboth likenessandspirit,tellsthe storyofamanwhose journeythroughfootball andleadershipleftalasting markonAustralianhistory. OurrecentCommunity Meeting,heldonThursday, August28,at94Mangan Street,Tongala,brought localresidentsandgroups togethertoshareideas anddiscusswaysto strengthenourcommunity. Twelvecommunity memberscamealongto contributetheirvoicesand vision,andamassive91 completedsurveyswere sentit.

Thismeetingwasguided bytheresultsofthe TongalaCommunity Survey,whichhighlighted someclearprioritiesforour town:

�� Communitygarden projects–manyresidents seevalueincreating sharedgardenspacesfor connection,learning,and sustainability

EveryDecembersince2020, Tongalahaslitupwith somethingtrulyunique. Whatbeganwithtwo haybalespaintedasBluey andBingointhemiddleof theCOVID-19pandemic quicklygrewintooneofour town’smostlovedtraditions theChristmasHayBale Trail.

Fromthosefirsttwo characterscamean explosionofcolourand creativity

Eachyear,closeto20 haybalesappearedaround town turnedintoSantas, reindeer,Aussieanimals, andcheekyChristmas scenes

Familiesstrolledordrove thetrail,kidspickedtheir favourites,andvisitorsfrom acrosstheregioncameto seewhatTongalawould dreamupnext.

Thetrailgaveusmorethan festivefun.Itgaveus connectionwhenwe neededitmost,prideinour town,andthousandsof visitorssupportingourlocal businesses.Forafewshort

years,Tongalawasknown farandwideasthelittle townwiththebighaybales. Butallgoodthingshave theirtime.

Aftermuchreflection,the TongalaDevelopment Grouphasmadethe decisiontobringtheHay BaleTrailtoaclose. Withoutavolunteer coordinatorstepping forward,andwithoursmall teamalreadystretchedthin runningsomany communityevents,we simplycan’tcarryiton. Whileit’shardtosay goodbye,wewantto celebratewhatthetrailhas givenus

Itbrightenedthedarkest daysofCOVID,itputsmiles onthefacesofyoungand old,anditshowedwhatcan happenwhenacommunity rollsupitssleevesandhas abitoffuntogether
