It’s Show Time!

Doesn’t it seem like we were just at the NVP in Louisville? Well, as the old saying goes, “Time flies when you’re having a good time.” And we are. So, yes, we need to get our plans set for the upcoming Summer 2025 edition of the long-running LeMans North American NVP Product Expo. Key it into your calendar: NVP Milwaukee, Baird Center, September 6-7. Then get with your Drag rep to get signed up and details about hotels, etc.

To help get you ready, be sure to take a look at our 11page NVP Product Preview feature in this issue starting on page 38. There will be many more products to see there on the show floor, but to get you started, you’ll find more than 35 featured in the story. You can also see when and where the Meet & Greet reception and Bike Show will be held, as well as the Dealer Product Training seminars. Presentations will be made by Alpinestars, Custom Dynamics, Feuling, Khrome Werks, Legend Suspensions, Ohlins and Saddlemen.

A story starting on page 24 that you should enjoy is a spotlight on St. Joe Harley-Davidson, located in St. Joseph, Missouri. The McCreary family has a couple of generations of family experience as Harley-Davidson dealers, as well as custom bike building, so of course they are great Drag Specialties dealers.

We have two very cool motorcycle builds to show you. On page 28, you’ll see the start of a Street Glide build story. Joe Houpt and his team at Suburban Motors turned a 2024 FLHX Street Glide into a street ready version of a BRL Race Bagger. And for something more “old school,” check out the story on page 50 about Ray Wetzel’s 1980s-90s Shovelhead custom build.

Enjoy these stories and plenty more about products from some of the industry’s top Drag Specialties vendors. Hope to see you at the Baird Center in September. ■

NEWS EVENTS AND Exclusive Training Tour for Drag Dealers

MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN – MAY 27, 2025 Story and photos

When the Drag Specialties Dealer Training Tour rolled into Milwaukee in late May, it was only fitting that it made its stop in the city’s iconic tribute to V-Twin motorcycles – the HarleyDavidson Museum.

So, after some early rain cleared off and the sun started sinking, Drag Specialties dealers and their reps gathered together for a night of food, refreshments, access to the museum and an in-depth round of product education from the participating vendors – GBrakes, Legend Suspensions, Michelin, Motul and Z1R.

As always, the presentations by the five suppliers offered dealers a firsthand look at their product lines, getting that hands-on experience that can be used to improve sales and help customers better understand the parts, apparel and accessories. In addition to the tactile education, they also received pointers and tips about product features and benefits.

For Z1R, this meant giving the dealers some extra tools and information to understanding how to be even more successful with Z1R helmets and apparel. And one dealer ended up getting more than an education, they were the lucky recipient of a Z1R modular helmet.

One presentation that had the room talking was from GBrakes (formerly known as Galfer USA). The company’s Sandro Milesi was on hand to detail his new company and its offerings, which includes new GBrakes Custom Rotor Configurator. The online app lets V-Twin customers dream up, design, order and bring their own GBrakes front or rear brake rotor creations to life.

Legend Suspensions offered a comprehensive look at popular motorcycle products as well as those for popular Harley-Davidson Trike models. The presentation included detailed fitment guidance as well as a deep dive into the company’s front end suspension products. This included the differences between “Performance” and “Comfort” to allow customers the ability to choose what works best for them.

For the final presentation Motul shared information and the tech behind the creation of its premium oil products. Dealers were able to learn what goes into the creation of a synthetic oil and how the different levels of refining meet and exceed established guidelines set forth by the industry rating experts.

Afterward, the assembled dealers headed out to the Drag Specialties semi-truck for some bench racing and to check out the 2025 fleet of FatBook/OldBook custom bikes, each one showcasing many of the products covered in the night’s presentations. ■

Third Annual Black Hills Motorcycle Show

DEADWOOD MOUNTAIN GRAND – DEADWOOD, SOUTH DAKOTA: MAY 24th

Rod Olson photos

or the third year running, the Black Hills Motorcycle Show returned to the historic Deadwood Mountain Grand for a beloved celebration of the region’s deeply ingrained motorcycle culture.

Over one weekend in late May, longtime Drag Specialties dealer Deadwood Custom Cycles hosted a celebration of custom V-Twin (and a variety of other makes!) motorcycles in what is unofficially the kick-off of riding season in the Black Hills. Since its launch three years ago, the BHMS has grown into a chance for the area’s custom builders, vendors, riders and enthusiasts to commune before everyone gets busy working on the massive Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

“The easiest way I can explain it is that most people who live and work in this area have to work so much during the Rally, the long days and long hours, that they don’t get to enjoy the Rally itself,” says Jason Mook, owner of Deadwood Custom Cycles. “This is a show for us to come together and celebrate all-things motorcycles.”

The weekend kicked off Friday night before the show with a Meet & Greet party for sponsors, builders and vendors. Come Saturday, the doors opened the bike show, that this year attracted entries that included everything from a 1941 Knucklehead and a 1963 Vespa to a 2024 Low Rider ST and a radical 1970 XLCH Digger. Overall, there were 120 motorcycles entered into the show, with 15 specialty awards and more than 45 awards in total handed out.

There were also activities in Deadwood throughout the weekend, including free concerts on Saturday night, giveaways, raffles, tattoo artists, and children’s activities. For 2025, Nick Trask of Trask Performance was on hand as the celebrity builder and judge for one of the contest categories.

The proceeds from the show were donated to Sacred Mountain Retreat Center, which provides a cost-free seven day retreat in the Black Hills for veterans and first responders who are suffering from PTSD or trauma.

“Every year, this event has grown bigger and better. I’m always very grateful for the turnout and for those people who attend the show from out of town,” Mook says.

“One of the big takeaways I heard from many people is that you could really feel the sense of community that was in the room. The vibe was just fantastic.” ■

Herfoss Wins Dramatic King of the Baggers Round at Road America

BRAKE SOLUTIONS

Power Design for American Muscle

MotoAmerica’s Mission King of the Baggers series has been a Harley-Davidson/ Indian Motorcycle rivalry since day one. At the series’ rounds at Road America in late May, that rivalry was taken up a notch.

A day after watching Harley’s podium lockout in race one on Saturday, Drag Specialties/Parts Unlimited/S&S/Indian Motorcycle’s Troy Herfoss was determined not to let it happen again. And he rode like it, battling at the front of the pack with an equally intense Bradley Smith in a contest between two racers desperately wanting to win.

Unlimited/S&S/Indian

Harley rider Smith led into the final corner on the last lap with the lead, ran wide and left a hole that Herfoss charged through. The pair came to together on the exit with Smith crashing his Harley-Davidson x Dynojet Factory Racing Road Glide and Herfoss riding to victory.

Smith’s two teammates James Rispoli and Kyle Wyman, meanwhile, watched it unfold right in front of them and raced up the hill to finish second and third, respectively.

BAGGER RACING LEAGUE ROUNDS 3 & 4

DRAG SPECIALTIES BATTLE OF THE BAGGERS: MOTORSPORT PARK HASTINGS

The Bagger Racing League brought the thunder of V-Twin engines to Motorsport Park Hastings in Hastings, Nebraska, for Rounds 3 and 4 of the Drag Specialties Battle of the Baggers presented by Memphis Shades.

For one weekend in late May fans filled the stands soaking in the raw power, intense competition and vibrant energy that defines this all-American motorsport. They weren’t disappointed as the event delivered two days of heart-pounding action, showcasing the growing popularity of Bagger racing and its unique blend of performance and style.

“The energy this weekend was unreal,” said BRL founder Rob Buydos. “From the roaring crowds to the packed vendor village, the racing exceeded every expectation and showed why Bagger racing is taking the motorsport world by storm.”

Round 3 kicked off under perfect racing conditions – clear skies, 65°F and a grippy track with no trace of moisture.

The ideal setup fueled fierce battles, with returning teams and fresh contenders pushing their machines to the limit.

The paddock buzzed with excitement, packed with fans, vendors and the unmistakable roar of V-Twin engines.

FAMILY-OWNED V-TWIN LEGACY

ST. JOE HARLEY-DAVIDSON: ST. JOSEPH, MISSOURI

In 1969 Dewey and Susie McCreary were looking to become motorcycle retailers. At the time, Dewey managed a Harley-Davidson shop in Kansas City, Missouri called Harley-Davidson of Kansas City, Missouri, so the next move was to find a place they could call their own. Options to purchase a location in the region were limited to Oklahoma City and a property in St. Joseph, Missouri. They chose the 3,000 square foot real estate in downtown St. Joseph, the city in which the Drag Specialties dealer is still located.

Located just north of Kansas City, St. Joseph is now a community of 75,000 people tucked along the eastern bank of the Missouri River. St. Joseph’s history includes various historic sites – the home and museum of legendary outlaw Jesse James, the Patee House, which served as the Pony Express’s eastern headquarters and is now a National Historic Landmark, and the nearby Amelia Earhart Hangar Museum.

While the McCreary’s new business would open a new chapter in their life, the timing was unfortunate. Harley-Davidson was suffering financially in 1969 and, close to bankruptcy, it was purchased by American Machine and Foundry (AMF) that same year. The Motor Company was saved from bankruptcy,

yet AMF’s ownership led to a period known for declining quality and a declining reputation for Harley.

“My parents jumped in feet first and were just starting to get rolling when Harley got bought out by AMF,” explains Mick McCreary, Dewey and Susie’s son and co-owner of St. Joe Harley-Davidson. “Obviously, the timing really couldn’t have been any [worse] for them.

“Eventually, my dad got burned out because the majority of bikes that were made in that time frame had very little quality control. So, at night, and even on Sundays, he was down at the store working to keep the motorcycles that people had just bought running. He made it about nine or 10 years like that before he threw my mom the keys and told her that she should try to make the business work because he was done with it.”

Asked about that time, the now 86-year-old Susie responded: “Yes. Dewey’s goal was for us to retire in 10 years, but instead only he retired in nine years.”

THE MATRIARCH

“Imagine a little 5-foot woman trying to run a Harley-Davidson dealership during what was then a man’s world,” Mick says of

his mother. “But she pulled it off and we’re still here.” Adds Susie: “Nobody who wants something should ever give up.”

At the time, the dealership was retailing bikes not only from Harley-Davidson, but also Bultaco, Kawasaki and Moto-Guzzi. Susie’s first move was to hire a mechanic specifically for the Harleys and a mechanic specifically for the import brands. Then, to help make ends meet, she had an in-house paint booth constructed and began painting motorcycles in the shop after hours and on Sundays.

“The guy who rented mom and dad the building in the old part of St. Joe didn’t have my dad sign a contract because he didn’t think they’d make it six months,” Mick recalls. “Well, 25 years later they were paying the same amount for rent that they did originally. So that was kind of cool, and in hindsight really helped out.”

But, Susie’s life in motorcycles wasn’t just about retailing, servicing and painting them. She also competed in hill-climbs and racing. “I was racing smaller Harleys – the Italian models from that era – and hill-climbing on a Sprint,” she recalls.

The tides quickly turned due to Susie’s hard work, and, by the late 1970s, she owned not only the St. Joseph location, but

also two other Kawasaki dealerships in Kansas City. “It made for long days,” she says. “I’d often get home at midnight.”

SECOND GENERATION

While Mick worked around the dealership when he was a child, he initially made a living showing horses professionally before joining his mother as co-owner in 1989. The dealership had been solely Harley-Davidson since the early ’80s, following a group of Harley-Davidson senior executives’ purchase of the brand in 1981.

“They brought me in for sales, and then eventually I got to parts and that was primarily where I stayed,” he explains. “I can work on bikes, but I’ll be the first to tell you that I’m not a mechanic.”

Mick is assisted in running the dealership by General Manager Terry Trimmer. Trimmer joined in 2000 as parts manager and became general manager in 2010.

Now having worked together for 25 years, the two make a formidable team.

The team at St. Joe Harley-Davidson. Front row from left: Mick McCreary, Becca Haney, Susie McCreary, Ken Bake, Brandon Fetterer, Jesse Youngs, and Taylor Cochran. Back row from left: Dylan Rutland, Zach Aucoin, Rickey Nowell, Tina Burris, Matt Banks, Kris Koerperich, Parker McCreary, Terry Trimmer, John Yoho, Madison McCreary, and Dane Newton.

“It’s one of those deals where, while we’re not family, we’re probably closer than a lot of families,” Trimmer says.

On their days off, the two often play golf together or go on rides. What do they ride?

“We both do vintage bikes,” Mick says. “While a lot of guys are riding around on 2020 and newer bikes, I’m on a ’56 Pan and Terry is on a ’77 Shovel.”

BIGGER AND BETTER

After nearly 30 years doing business from the center of downtown St. Joseph, the McCreary family finally acquiesced to Harley-Davidson’s wishes that they transition to a new facility along a major corridor of travel.

“Harley kept pushing and pushing and pushing for us to get by an interstate,” Mick says. “So, in 2000 we moved to a 17,000 square foot location right along I-29.”

The dealership operates with 18 employees, including Mick and Terry, five technicians in service, three employees in parts, a few sales associates, and Mick’s daughter Madison in MotorClothes and accessories.

With many family-owned dealerships, the children of the owners or founders will often start working at a young age by sweeping or breaking down boxes. At St. Joe HarleyDavidson, Mick’s kids got a similar start.

“I have two kids, Madison and Parker,” Mick says. “While Madison grew up in the business – I’d stick her in cash-wrap when she was little – I ultimately told both of them that I didn’t want them coming in until they went to work for somebody else. So they both graduated from college and went to work.

“Now Madison runs MotorClothes and Parker is a heavy equipment operator who comes in and helps us out with

anything that needs to be done on evenings or weekends, whether that’s wrenching or shuttling bikes around.”

The dealership itself is an efficient retail operation, with a floorplan that includes the showfloor that features 60 to 70 motorcycles, an apparel section, the finance and bookkeeping area, office space, a pre-owned bikes area, the parts department, and the service desk and area.

“It’s a market that’s constantly changing,” Mick says. “Street Glides and Road Glides are still our claim to fame,” adds Mick during an interview in June. “Three or four years ago we couldn’t keep a Limited on the floor, and now that’s softened. But we also do a ton of pre-owned; we moved 35 units during the first three weeks of this month, and I suspect we’ll move another 10 to 12 before the end of this week.”

CUSTOMER OUTREACH

St. Joe Harley-Davidson takes a multi-prong approach to reaching new and returning customers with marketing campaigns across television and radio, and has recently returned to doing billboards. “And we light it up on social media,” Mick notes.

Additionally, the dealership hosts a variety of special events throughout the year incorporating food, live entertainment and other offerings. On their calendar are Smokin’ Tunes events typically recurring April through October that feature live music, food vendors, custom embroidery services, bike shows or swap meets. Bike Nights are held monthly May through August that also feature live music and food, and the annual breast cancer awareness ride is scheduled for October 11.

“We do one bike night per month because we don’t want to have to push our staff to do that every week,” Mick says.

“Years ago Terry said, ‘We’re not just a motorcycle shop, we’re also an entertainment center.’ So we also do something like have a food truck and even solo entertainment pretty much every Saturday year-around.

“The result is that we have a pretty damn good crew of regulars who have become friends and come in just to hang out. Last week we had 250 to 300 bikes parked out front.”

In addition to selling and servicing bikes, and becoming an entertainment center, St. Joe Harley-Davidson also attracts clients via its custom/performance builds.

“We’ve been building $50,000 to $75,000 custom motorcycles probably for the past 25 years,” Trimmer says. “A lot of big motors, 30-inch front wheels, big 300 series rears, etc.”

“We only have 10 lifts, so we tend to do them in the winter when things slow down a bit,” Mick adds. “We’ll build some

The sales floor at St. Joe Harley-Davidson is filled with new and pre-owned Harley-Davidsons.

motors in the summertime, but in the winter our guys can take a little more time to do the nice job that’s expected.”

ASSISTED BY DRAG SPECIALTIES

All of that custom work, as well as the shop’s bread-and-butter service work is buoyed by the dealership’s long relationship with Drag Specialties.

“We build a ton of custom bikes using Drag Specialties products,” Trimmer says. “Drag Specialties is by far our number one supplier. We do a ton of handlebars, exhausts and other hard parts, tires, controls, cables, fluids, filters, you name it.”

Drag Specialties sales rep Kayla Barrows speaks highly of the team at St. Joe Harley-Davidson.

“Ken, John and Dane are your parts guys. They all three are seriously into motorcycles, and it shows when you talk to them,” Barrows says.

“Ken’s got the experience; years of riding means he usually understands what you’re after without a lot of complicated explanations. John’s the go-to if you’re looking to personalize your ride, and Dane is meticulous and makes sure you get the correct parts. You get the sense he treats every order like it’s for his own bike – accuracy matters.

Barrow says that the fact that the whole crew consists of riders is readily apparent. When working with customers, it’s more like just talking with someone who shares the same passion and less like a transaction.

“They get the nuances of Harley ownership, and that makes a difference when you need reliable parts and honest advice,” she says. “In service, manager Jesse Youngs has been a team member of St. Joe Harley for 17 years. He has seen the evolution of Harley-Davidson models over nearly two decades, so whether you’re rolling in on an older classic or a brand-new machine, he’s got the experience to handle it. That kind of long-term commitment speaks volumes about his dedication to the dealership and the riders they serve.”

MOTORCYCLE MAVEN

After taking control of a struggling dealership and turning it into a successful business, creating a popular paint shop, racing motorcycles, owning multiple retail locations, and building a legacy for her family, Susie McCreary retired from daily duties at St. Joe Harley-Davidson four years ago at the age of 82.

How does it feel to take leave from the business you spent 52 years building? “I miss it,” she says. “I still bring her to the shop some Saturdays so she can socialize,” Mick adds. Asked whether she enjoys those conversations, Susie responds: “Oh yes. They’re people I’ve known for many years.”

With that, Susie can be confident that her son, Mick, granddaughter Madison, grandson Parker, and the remainder of the St. Joe Harley-Davidson crew will continue to faithfully manage the thriving enterprise that she created. ■

STREET SUPER ROAD-RIPPING PERFORMANCE BAGGER BUILD

Aprevious issue of Drag Specialties Magazine (issue #3, April 2025) included a two-page story about the build of a Bagger Racing League-ready Harley-Davidson Road Glide on-site during the Louisville NVP.

Overseeing the blitz build was Joe Houpt and his BRL-seasoned Suburban Motors Harley-Davidson crew, who prepped and built the 2017 Road Glide for the BRL’s Super Street class. The bike’s 117˝ engine made it a perfect candidate for dealers and privateer racers participating in the Super Street class, which is favored by many BRL riders.

That bike had a parts manifest straight from the FatBook, everything working in concert to get it ready for the grid. And that’s exactly what happened. After being purchased by Junior Skolnick of Lifestyle Cycles, that race-ready bike made it into the BRL’s opening rounds at Chuckwalla Raceway with rider Frankie Garcia at the helm. Garcia picked up a secondplace finish in the Super Street class, showcasing what Houpt, his team and the FatBook can do.

Well, for this stock 2024 FLHX Street Glide, Houpt and the gofast crew also had their eye on performance, but this Bagger is prepped for taming the twisties, streets and roadways favored by today’s breed of Performance Bagger riders. Built to join the fleet of FatBook customers traveling around the country as part of the Drag Specialties Dealer Training Tour, the stock Street Glide can now be considered a Super Street Glide.

Keep in mind, too, that like the NVP BRL Bagger, this one is built with parts featured in the FatBook, the goal being a sporty Performance Bagger that any Harley enthusiast or Drag Specialties dealer might put on the street.

As this magazine did for the Super Street BRL racer project, we’ve included a Build Sheet for this feature bike, listing all the key aftermarket parts needed to complete the transformation.

Among the new parts selected for this Performance Bagger are the Arlen Ness Split-Spoke Blue wheels that complement the original Harley-Davidson’s Sharkskin Blue paint job. The wheels easily accept the Ness front and rear Black hub kits,

For this Drag Specialites Dealer Training Tour bike, Joe Houpt and his Suburban Motors H-D crew were looking to build a street-ready version of a Bagger

and the Arlen Ness 6-Piston Blue front calipers help maintain the color theme. Galfer oversize Wave black front brake rotors offer plenty of stopping power, and a Galfer rotor offers additional “whoa-and-slow” for the rear wheel. Both wheels are wrapped with Metzeler’s all-day road-hugging 888 Marathon tires for maximum traction.

Up front sits another Arlen Ness product, this one the Fat Wrapper carbon fiber front fender, a stylish product that wraps closely around the tire. Its carbon fiber matting reveals itself just enough to suggest this is a performance bike!

The crew quarters boast some interesting custom parts, too. Centerpiece, if you will, are the LA Choppers Twin Round black handlebars that readily accept the Arlen Ness blue knurled hand grips and the Arlen Ness blue forged oval mirrors. Down

below are the Arlen Ness SpeedLiner heel/toe foot control kit and the Slyfox black anodized rider and mini passenger floorboards. Those black floorboards match the PSR Anthem Pro black clutch and brake lever set.

Additional performance parts are found in the cockpit, including the Hawg Halters Black X-23 7-degree bolt-on triple tree, which offers solid placement for the Ohlins Nix 22 front fork cartridge kit. A set of the Arlen Ness Fat Tire black fork boots really round out the style. As a further nod to the bike’s performance pedigree, Houpt and company installed an aerodynamic and race-tested Klock Werks Kolor Flare windshield in blue.

While we’re matching colors, check out the Saddlemen Pro Series SDC Gripper Seat with backrest and blue stitching. In

fact, Saddlemen, through Drag Specialties, offers a variety of optional custom stitch colors as part of their exclusive Custom Seat Program. No performance build worth its dyno numbers would be caught without an exhaust upgrade and our Super Street Glide features Drag Specialties’ new 4-inch black slip-on mufflers with black billet end caps. When you’re helping with the breathing out, you also have to help with the breathing in. For this, those slip-ons pair with Performance Machine’s new *(EMIS Code 3) C4 Series carbon fiber air cleaner.

The engine’s clutch life is extended, too, thanks to the Trask Power Plate Kit that helps prevent clutch slipping on Baggers builds like this. It’s easily visible through Barnett’s Scorpion Series clear/black derby cover. Additional engine dressing includes Performance Machine’s Black Ops rocker box covers and THRASHIN Supply’s Gen 2 Black smooth cam cover.

Because this is a Performance Bagger built for spirited street riding, visibility is paramount, so the Suburban builders added a healthy complement of Custom Dynamics lighting, including the new Shark Demon LED Performance Headlight. The lighting array also includes Custom Dynamics’ LED front fork Lightz up front, and dual color LED saddlebag latch Lightz and low profile Bagz saddlebag lights. Helping to get all those wires connected comes courtesy of NAMZ and its plugand-play throttle-by-wire extension harness.

Curious what this Super Street Glide looks like out on the road? Well, you might not get to see it carving canyons, but if the Drag Dealer Training Tour rolls through town then sign on for a look. The Milwaukee NVP will also offer a chance for an in-person inspection of just what’s possible with a little imagination and the FatBook. Talk with your Drag rep for details on everything. ■

Road Trips and Everyday Rips

Luggage That Just Makes Sense

For those times when just a pop of color will do, THRASHIN’ offers its Handlebar Bags in Gray, Blue, Brown, Green, Orange, Red, and, of course, Purple.

Stashing essentials during a ride isn’t always easy. Jacket and pants pockets bulge and are uncomfortable, and saddlebags aren’t necessarily a convenient solution, especially if you want to avoid pulling over and getting off the bike to grab something. That’s where THRASHIN’s lineup of Handlebar Bags come in. These compact, stylish bags provide easy and accessible cargo space that’s great for road trips and everyday rips.

“Our OG Handlebar Bag, the Handlebar Bag Plus, and the new Handlebar Bag Slim all use the same durable nylon material, have quality YKK zippers, and feature vertical and horizontal molle attachment points that allow you to mount to risers and/or the handlebars,” says THRASHIN’ owner Lance Coury. These bags are easy to attach, offer an awesome storage solution, and compliment the cockpit of your customers’ bikes.

“The OG Bag was our first Handlebar Bag that we launched many, many years ago,” says Coury. “It’s had some upgrades along the way as we’ve identified ways to improve it, but the size and versatility are the same as always.”

Function meets fitment in the OG Bag, which is 7-inches wide, 5-inches tall, and 3¼-inches deep. That’s just enough

In THRASHIN’s OG Handlebar Bag, there’s just enough space for a wallet, phone, sunglasses and a few other essentials. Four interior pockets are sized for everyday items, and a small zip pocket on the front holds items for easy access.

space for a wallet, phone, sunglasses and a few other essentials. THRASHIN’ helps your customers keep their stuff organized with four interior pockets that are sized for everyday items. The interior is THRASHIN’s characteristic hi-viz orange, which helps the bag’s contents stand out. Additionally, there’s a small zip pocket on the front of the OG. “That’s where I’ll put my registration and maybe some cash for easy access,” says Coury.

Over time, the THRASHIN’ crew recognized the need for a little more space for larger items and longer journeys. That’s when the Handlebar Bag Plus was born.

“When we designed this bag, we wanted something that was a little bigger than the OG,” says Coury. “We went with 9-inches wide, 5-inches tall and 4-inches deep.” That’s roughly 60 percent bigger than the OG, with many of the same features. You get the same compartmented, hi-viz interior, just bigger, meaning there’s room for a digital camera or even a water bottle.

The Handlebar Bag Plus’s extra real estate was a bit of blank slate, so the guys thought about how to make it as useful as possible. One idea was the wide front zipper pouch, which the THRASHIN’ team designed specifically to hold sunglasses. “We sized it for sunglasses and even lined it with microfiber,” says Coury. Behind that is the same slim zip pocket that’s found on the OG Bag. Overall, the Handlebar Bag Plus is a great option for those who just need a little more space or prefer a larger bag to match the proportions of their bike.

Vertical and horizontal webbing on every side of the OG and Plus bags makes them easy to install, whether your customers want them on the bar or attached to the risers. “On bikes with risers you can mount it to the front or back,”

says Coury, “It’s really up to the rider. I like it on the back so it’s easy to get to while I’m sitting on the bike.”

Both the OG Handlebar Bag and the Handlebar Bag Plus come with two removable buckle straps that mount to the bottom of the pouch and are compatible with the THRASHIN’ Tool Roll (sold separately). This allows your customers to easily bring their tools on those longer road trips.

“The straps are also long enough to hold a rolled up flannel or windbreaker, but if you don’t want to use them, you can just pull them out,” says Coury.

Finally, there’s the Handlebar Bag Slim. “With the Slim, we wanted similar function to our other handlebar bags, but in a narrower profile that fits in tight spaces,” says Coury. We’re talking narrower gaps between risers and gas tanks or gauges, or between the fairing and risers. To that end, the bag measures 8-inches wide, 9-inches tall, and 2-inches deep. It’s a shallow design, but with lots of useful storage, all accessible via a velcro strap.

Like the other bags, the Slim has specific features that the team spent a lot of time developing. That includes an expandable micro-fiber lined front pocket that’ll hold sunglasses or even a camera. You also get four sewn-in interior pockets, plus a tethered clip for keys.

All three bags install in seconds and are built to last. They use UV-treated 1680D ballistic nylon that resist fading, and they’ve invested in quality YKK zippers that hold up to life on the road. THRASHIN’ develops products they want to use on road trips and everyday rips, and it shows. ■

The Handlebar Bag Slim has a narrow profile that fits into tight spaces like between risers and a fairing. It still features lots of useful storage and has that helpful hi-viz interior.
The Handlebar Bag Plus offers about 60 percent more storage space than the OG Handlebar Bag. It features a sunglasses pouch and versatile webbing makes it easy to install.

Horsepower in a Box Bolt-On

Turbo for Reliable Performance

If you’re a dealer looking for real-deal power that sells itself the moment a customer hits the starter switch, look no further. The Trask *(EMIS Code3) Tornado Turbo System isn’t some warmed-over bolt-on with a fancy cover and big promises. It’s a clean, mean and totally complete turbo system that your customers can put on a stock Harley-Davidson M8.

Whether your customer is running a 107˝, 114˝, or 117˝, the Tornado delivers the kind of performance bump that’s hard to ignore, a real-world 40 percent to 50 percent increase in horsepower. It’s torque you feel in your chest, not just see on a dyno sheet. And with ThunderMax tune files included, it doesn’t just run, it runs right, with the rideability and smoothness that riders demand.

Trask built this system to dominate on the road and perform in your shop. Every component is engineered in-house, starting with Trask-designed compressor and turbine housings, paired with proven Garrett internals. That combination is fast, durable and built to survive hard use from riders who don’t hold back.

Every part needed for installation is included – larger injectors, high-performance spark plugs, oil feed and drain lines, a custom cam cover, a boost gauge with mount, all necessary hardware and gaskets, and the signature Trask plenum with an integrated blow-off valve. That’s a huge win for shops looking to complete jobs efficiently.

coming back for more. The systems are hand-built in the USA with craftsmanship that shows up in every weld and bracket.

The Tornado is for customers who’ve already maxed out stage kits and cam swaps and are ready for the next level of power, with proven rideability and reliability. The Tornado is built for 2017–2023 M8 models, with a straightforward install that takes about 10 hours. The system is not compatible with Twin-Cooled models or bikes for which the fairing lowers can’t be removed.

Fire up a Tornado-equipped bike in the shop, and customers notice. They hear the tone, feel the response, and start asking questions. It becomes a centerpiece that draws in business and reinforces your shop’s reputation for serious performance.

Best of all, the Tornado opens the door to future upgrades and high-margin parts. Once a customer experiences the turbo difference, they’re often ready to take the next step with Trask’s full lineup: from clutch baskets and Power Plates to chain drive conversions, swingarms, vented transmission top covers and tail sections for Baggers. ■

2025 NORTH AMERICAN NVP PRODUCT EXPO

It’s an autumn tradition – Drag Specialties dealers and sales reps from around North America gather to get a long first look at the hot new V-Twin aftermarket products hitting the shelves, and then return to their dealership with an advantage over the competition – and a jumpstart on the selling season.

The National Vendor Presentation is just that important, and, as the name implies, it’s the one place where Drag’s vast network of vendors showcase all the parts, accessories and apparel packed into the FatBook, the OldBook and the other Drag Specialties catalogs. In addition to this industry-leading first-look at new products, the NVP

Product Expo is also ground zero for exclusive product training, a source for show-only discounts and incentives, and a hub for reconnecting with longtime industry friends and business partners.

For 2025, that special gathering gets kicked up a few notches as Drag Specialties, Parts Unlimited and Parts Canada once again team up to present the North American NVP Product Expo, a collaboration between the three companies that promises to make the Baird Center the absolute epicenter of the V-Twin motorcycle aftermarket.

Drag Specialties dealers can expect a revamped NVP experience with more incentives and discounts than at

hen a Harley-Davidson dealership was going out of business back in 1996, Ray Wetzel picked up a spare frame they had sitting around. Then, that frame proceeded to do a lot more sitting. After about 30 years, Ray decided it was time to do something with it.

The result is a stunning custom build with a Shovelhead engine and a lot of parts sourced from Drag Specialties. This is just another in a long line of custom bikes from Ray, who owns R.P. Performance Cycle.

Ray has been in the motorcycle industry for nearly 45 years, and he’s been a Drag dealer for more than 30 of those. What started as doing some repair

For Drag Specialties dealer Ray Wetzel, this Shovelhead-powered custom was a long time in the making. With the help of the FatBook and the OldBook, the owner of R.P. Performance Cycles has finally unveiled his labor of love.
A Saddlemen seat not only adds style to this custom, it also provides miles of comfort.
From any angle, Ray Wentzel's build looks great.

WHAT’S IS NEW AGAIN

Old A NEW-OLD STOCK FRAME GETS ROLLING

work on custom bikes led to more intensive projects, as well as plenty of friends asking for help with their own projects. Even after Ray went to work at a Harley-Davidson dealership, he was still doing custom bikes on the side, mostly breathing new life into old Shovelheads and Panheads. That dealership was so impressed that they wound up selling Ray’s customs on commission.

Some of those custom bikes were built out of necessity. “Back in the early ’90s you couldn’t get a bike,” Ray recalls. “Everything was backordered. One of the dealers I had a relationship with had paint sets. I would build around those, mostly Softails and stuff like that. They would sell like crazy because people couldn’t get bikes.”

But, even after picking up that frame in 1996, its time hadn’t arrived just yet. The frame was new old-stock from 1984, which Ray says is a good year, because those frames were stronger than earlier-model ones. Over time, Ray began collecting parts for it, and he finally got a “it’s now or never” attitude about it.

It took Ray about two years to complete the build, because he worked on it in between running his business. That meant a lot of late nights and Sunday afternoons were dedicated to the bike. Now that it’s finished, Ray isn’t letting it go.

“It’s for me,” he says. “So much love and attention and time was put into it, and I want to enjoy it.”

The shiny Shovelhead engine Ray paired with the frame might look fairly stock at a glance, but it has a lot going for it. It features a host of S&S Cycle parts for a big performance boost, including an Evolution flywheel, engine cases, rocker covers, cam, pistons and other internal parts.

As for the look of the build, Ray says, “My thoughts were about building a fat-looking bike. I started with these tanks that I had, and I remade them long and fat. Then I felt that the front fork had to be fat.”

The 41mm forks Ray had on the bike didn’t look right to him, and the solution he found was to get a triple tree that would accommodate an FL-style fork leg. The resulting 49mm forks looked just right.

Using a frame he picked up about 30 years ago, Ray Wetzel added an S&S Cycle engine and got to building. The result is a striking showcase of Wetzel’s talent and aesthetic.
Photos courtesy of Ray Wetzel

For Ray, one of the highlights of the build wasn’t the bike itself but the people who stepped up to help him turn the bike into a reality. “It’s a great bunch of people, and I’ve been blessed they’ve let me into their lives,” he says. “If you have an idea and you approach them, they work with you. It’s something I didn’t expect. I could have done it without them, but it wouldn’t be what it is now.”

The team at Performance Machine were among those who went above and beyond for Ray. He says, “You can’t buy a PM wheel for a Shovelhead, so I had to work with them and let them know the hub size. They spent the time and the effort to look at what might work with that, and it all came together.”

It was the same story when it came to getting the brakes set up on the Shovelhead. Ray says HHI was there to assist in making sure components like the dual-disc caliper kit and 4-piston calipers were dialed in. The Goodridge stainless steel brake hoses complete the look.

Now that the bike is finished, Ray is ready to ride it around his home base in Crown Point, Indiana. He’ll be perched on a Saddlemen seat to make sure the bike is as comfortable as it is good-looking. The custom seat is another example of how a vendor stepped up to help Ray with conceptualizing and troubleshooting to make sure the bike turned out just right.

Throughout the process, Ray turned time and again to Drag Specialties to get just the right part, from bigger items, like the Arlen Ness Sidekick mirrors or the Avon Cobra Chrome tires, right down to the banjo bolts.

That easy access to parts was vital for Ray, who says, “With the fill rate that Drag has and the parts they carry, that makes it a lot easier. Just because it’s going on a Shovelhead doesn’t mean I can’t go in the FatBook and find parts to put on this old-style bike. The fill rate is phenomenal, and working with Brittany [Forslund], my rep—she’s a go-getter to no end.”

The people who helped the build come together are among the many who have made working in the motorcycle industry special for Ray. He has attended five Drag

Ray Wetzel counted on a big list of FatBook staples for completing his build. Arlen Ness, Drag Specialties, Klock Werks, LA Choppers, Magnum Shielding and Performance Machine, just to name a few are all represented.
Since picking up the new old-stock frame in 1996, Wetzel steadily collected parts to get his most personal custom build just right.

dealer rides, where he appreciates getting to build relationships.

“I really enjoy the camaraderie from the Drag Specialties people, from the vendors and from the other shops that are able to be there,” Ray says of Drag dealer rides. “When I went to the first one, I didn’t know what to expect. It was great. It makes you feel more comfortable, and you get to see the same dealers and make friends, and you speak with them throughout the year.”

Chances are good, one of the things they’ll be talking about is this custom Shovelhead. ■

Certified Comfort Changing Lives, One Cushion at a Time

Craig Johnson is the first person to admit there’s nothing glamorous about motorcycle seat cushions. But, that’s not why he got into that business, anyway. As the founder of Wild Ass, Johnson is focused on making motorcycle riding more accessible and more comfortable for people.

“We don’t sell chrome, we don’t sell bling or loud pipes,” Johnson says. “We sell a product that nobody wants to admit they need. We just love what we’re doing for the people.”

And those people have stories, which they share with Johnson. One of his more memorable customers was a young woman who had broken her pelvis in a crash. Even after healing, sitting on a motorcycle for a long stretch was too uncomfortable until she tried a Wild Ass seat cushion.

The carefully designed cushion, with its dynamic air cell technology, was a game-changer – and, in fact, a lifechanger. Not only could the woman ride again, but it allowed her to once again be a part of a family tradition.

Her dad approached Johnson and explained how the entire family rides together. “He said, ‘I want to thank you for bringing our family back together,’” Johnson recalls.

Stories like that have become the norm for Johnson, who says the company receives messages almost weekly from riders who want to share what a Wild Ass seat cushion has done for them. Some of those are stories of endurance, like a rider who covered 2,000 miles in one weekend with the help of Wild Ass. Other stories are more personal.

“When I say changing the lives of people, there are medical patients, there are crash victims, the working man as they get bulging discs and things like that. We’ve been able to make it so all of them can ride their motorcycle more, and that’s at any age,” Johnson explains.

Wild Ass seat cushions are designed for anyone who sits for a long period of time. The company, based in Brainerd, Minnesota, was founded in 2016, after what looked like a tough situation turned out to be a great opportunity.

Wild Ass motorcycle air cushions come in four styles: Smart, Saddle, Sport and Pillion. The four styles can be used on a wide range of motorcycle seats.

Johnson was working in the motorcycle division of a company that made medical-grade cushioning. When the company was sold and Johnson found himself downsized out of a job, he realized he could take everything he had learned and apply it to a focused, motorcycle-specific application. Wild Ass was born.

Long before that, though, Johnson was already immersed in the motorcycle industry. A lifelong rider, he has owned a KTM dealership and a motocross track. He was also a racer back in the day, before, as he says, he started working in the motorcycle industry and no longer had time to ride.

But finding time to ride became a priority for Johnson when he decided he wanted to participate in the notoriously difficult Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge. It would be a test of his own endurance as well as a test for the Wild Ass seat cushion that helped him do it.

Johnson competed in the challenge in 2022, and he came out of it as an Elite Finisher for covering 10,293 miles in 11 days and 9 hours. It was more miles than he had ridden in the entire time since he’d founded Wild Ass.

Afterward, instead of being relieved and ready to rest, Johnson says, “When I got done, I was kind of bummed. I wanted to keep going.”

His 2001 Harley-Davidson Road King was equipped with a Saddle Classic cushion for the Hoka Hey. These days, the bike is displayed in the Wild Ass booth when the company attends events. It’s a testament to just how well Wild Ass cushions work, and how many miles are possible with the added support.

The dynamic air cell technology inside each Wild Ass cushion allows the air to act like water, easily supporting a rider while eliminating pressure points. There are different shapes of Wild Ass cushions to choose from, like the saddle shape, which is an ideal fit for 2024 and newer Baggers.

There are also three different materials to choose from. For the riders Johnson calls the ‘Weekend Warriors’ – those who ride a couple hundred miles a day on shorter trips –the Lite material is ideal. The AirGel option is great for riders who are riding slightly more, maybe 200-400 miles in a day, on short or weekend trips. For the long-distance riders, Wild Ass offers its Classic material for ultimate comfort, ideal when logging 500 or more miles in a day.

“One thing that we really pride ourselves on is the ability to cater to the customer financially,” Johnson notes. The three different materials are all different price points, and because most customers aren’t in that long-distance category, “the average rider does not need the best cushion we offer.” ■

Meant to be Ridden Tires

for Choppers Hitting

the Road

What is the point of owning a chopper if you’re not going to ride it? That was the question that spurred Sean Mazza to start an event called the Jacumba Breakdown. Now heading into its second year, the ride-in event an hour east of San Diego will bring in chopper riders from all over North America. Mazza will ride there on his 1969 Shovelhead chopper equipped with Avon MkII tires.

Rumor has it that the tiny town of Jacumba was founded when some people broke down there and they stayed, but that’s not the only reason Mazza named the event the Jacumba Breakdown. “Motorcycles are typically going to break down,” he notes.

Jacumba is an oasis in the middle of the desert, and the event is centered around the Jacumba Hot Springs Hotel. Mazza is far from the first to host a rally there; a friend of his dug up photos from the 1970s that proved riding choppers in Jacumba has been going on for decades.

And if the Jacumba Breakdown has some ’70s vibes, too, it’s no coincidence. “My whole friend group are all massive motorcycle enthusiasts, and they’re all into collecting parts and doing things that pay homage to the past and the way things were done in the ’60s and ’70s, finding vintage parts and assembling them and tweaking them,” Mazza says.

That’s one of the reasons he chose a set of Avon MkII tires for his chopper. After all, Avon was a part of the scene back then, too. “All the guys I look up to typically run those, and all the old chopper mags you’d open and flip to, that’s one of the main styles you saw,” Mazza says.

The MkII tires look right at home paired with Mazza’s Shovelhead, which features a frame, powertrain and front end by Mick’s Chop Shop. San Diego builder Mike Olsen handled a lot of the other work, and the gold leaf and pinstriping was done by Manuel Cisneros. The green paint job is an homage to Mazza’s grandfather, who used to own a truck in the same shade. His grandfather introduced him to The Great Escape at a young age, sparking his lifelong love of motorcycling.

“They’re bias-ply tires, and they have a classic older look; they have no cross pattern on them,” Mazza says of the Avon MkII tires. “They have a thinner sidewall, and they

flex more. When you run choppers, it’s a rigid frame and there’s no suspension in the rear, so you’re effectively giving yourself suspension and adjusting it by how much pressure you put in your tire. It’s a great reason to run those tires.”

This year’s Jacumba Breakdown is happening October 17-19. ■

Innovative Highway Peg Mounts for Touring Models

There isn’t anything cryptic about why Touring bikes are referred to as such. HarleyDavidson Touring models are designed and built for long miles on the road, and for keeping riders comfortable while doing them. These bikes are outfitted thoroughly from the factory with features that prioritize rider comfort, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t room (and customer desire) for improvement.

As part of its mission to offer riders products that help refine their riding experience, Ciro developed innovative highway peg mounts for Touring bikes that offer maximized adjustability and road-ready durability.

First and foremost, it’s important to note that these highway peg mounts from Ciro are frame mounted. This design eliminates the need to mount anything to the engine guards, which can be an issue for customers that have lowers, or Trike customers that don’t have engine guards at all. Plus, this mounting method is solid and will stay right where customers set the adjustments.

Speaking of which, adjustability is a defining trait of Ciro’s highway peg mounts. Spline mounts are integrated from the mount itself to the peg adapter and from the adapter to the peg/footrest (or mini floorboard), so customers can really tweak the angles to exactly where they feel comfortable.

selection for a natural pairing or use just about any Harleystyle peg with the standard ½-inch adapters.

“Choosing this style setup rather than mounting pegs to engine guards is not only an improvement in strength, but it puts the peg in a balanced location that feels comfortable for a wide range of riders, from short to tall,” explains Ciro’s Kelsey Rudd. “Add in the vast adjustability and adaptability to different styles of pegs and floorboards and it can really translate to a better riding experience.”

Riders have the choice of using the footpeg, footrest or mini floorboard of their choice with Ciro’s frame-mounted highway peg mounts. They can choose from Ciro’s broad

There are four different highway peg mount options of these from Ciro, so you can help your customers achieve the setup they’re after right from the start. Two different lengths are available to account for comfort preference and rider size, each available in chrome or black finishes. As a finishing touch, each peg mount is supplied with full replacement brackets for under the floorboards, contributing to the strength of the entire setup. ■

AFull Coverage Keeping Gear, Rider and Bike Dry

ny ride requires some planning for the weather, but this is especially true for Adventure riding. The Harley-Davidson Pan America is ready for all types of terrain and weather, and it’s important that both a rider and their luggage are up for the challenge, too. With Nelson-Rigg, it’s easy to find the right luggage options, bike covers and rain gear.

“We take pride in being able to serve a customer in a total capacity. We can take care of them head to toe and wheel to wheel,” says Nelson-Rigg’s Deb Drinan. “Nelson-Rigg as a company is so diverse for a rider that they can get full coverage – for your gear, your body and your bike. We’ve got you covered.”

Pan America riders can choose from the TrailsEnd or Hurricane luggage from NelsonRigg. The Trails End collection features new fitments for the Pan America, including saddlebags and a crash bar bag. The collection also features tank and tail bags, a fuel bottle holder and more. Each Trails End piece includes a rain cover to guard against those wet-riding days.

When it comes to Adventure riding, it pays to be prepared. Nelson-Rigg makes it easy for bike and rider alike to be outfitted in waterproof gear and luggage. The company’s Solo Storm rain gear is a versatile addition to any customer’s kit. The Hurricane luggage is 100 percent waterproof and ready for road trips.

When the ride is over, protecting a bike from all elements is important.

Nelson-Rigg’s Defender Extreme ADV-size cover is waterproof, vented for airflow and easily covers the Harley Pan America.

For easier mounting and removal of the Trails End or Hurricane saddlebags, a set of quick-release saddlebag plates are the solution. These plates install easily, and getting the bags off and on is a breeze with the quick-release function.

For riders who prefer 100 percent waterproof gear, but with the same great size and configuration options as the Trails End collection, the Hurricane luggage is a perfect choice. In addition to the usual lineup of tank and tail bags plus saddlebags, the Hurricane collection also features duffle bags in multiple sizes, a backpack and a roll bag. Nelson-Rigg luggage includes key design features like internal stiffeners so the bags hold their shape, MOLLE panels and reflective accents.

When the ride is over, protecting the bike from all elements is important. A Nelson-Rigg Defender Extreme ADV-size cover does the job for the Pan America. All Defender Extreme covers are 100 percent waterproof, vented for airflow and include reflective accents.

Both the Trails End luggage and the bike covers are made from Nelson-Rigg’s proprietary UltraMax® fabric. This durable material is not only tough but also fade-proof. The Lifetime Warranty that is included with every NelsonRigg bike cover and all luggage includes a fade-free guarantee for UltraMax.

When everything else is dry, shouldn’t the rider be dry, too? Nelson-Rigg’s Solo Storm rain gear slips on easily over riding gear. One of the most notable features of the rain gear is that the jacket and pants are sold separately, so riders can choose the correct size for each. This flexibility in sizing ensures a better fit. Reflective detailing boosts visibility, as do the orange and yellow color options for the jacket. An all-black jacket matches the pants. ■

“Adventure means different things to different riders, which is why Metzeler is proud to offer Pan America owners multiple tire options tailored to how – and where – they ride,” said Brian Davenport of Metzeler Tires. “Whether you love tackling tough off-road trails or cruising on long road trips, we’re here to support every adventure.”

Metzeler’s Karoo tire line has long given Adventure riders the opportunity to ride anywhere they please, and the Karoo 4 sits right in the middle of the lineup as a 50/50 tire. For off-road riding, the Karoo 4 provides traction across various terrain styles. Scoop-shaped blocks hold things steady in sandy conditions, and the knob layout is ideal for hard pack.

For riding on paved surfaces, the Karoo 4 has a stiffer carcass and a multi-radius profile. The result is control and stability during both straight-line riding and cornering. Thanks to a dual-compound rear, riders can add up the miles knowing the tire has longevity.

The Tourance Next 2 has compounds that provide outstanding stability as well as durable performance throughout its entire life cycle. That stability, enhanced by the same technologies found in the Karoo 4, is present even when the bike is fully loaded for Adventure Touring and carrying a passenger.

There is also plenty of stability in wet-weather conditions. During testing, Metzeler found that the Tourance Next 2 had significant braking improvement in wet conditions compared to its predecessor. This confidence-boosting performance comes from aspects like Metzeler Hyperbase construction for cold-temperature performance and an adaptive high-silica compound in the center stripe of the rear tire. ■

Improving the Pan America’s Visibility

very motorcycle can benefit from improved visibility, and one quick and easy way to improve a bike’s brake lights is with the Magic Strobes module from Custom Dynamics. There are already applications for a variety of V-Twins, and now, HarleyDavidson Pan America riders can benefit from the added visibility offered by Magic Strobes.

The Pan America Magic Strobes brake light flasher is one of the newest Magic Strobes modules available from Custom Dynamics. All of the modules feature the plug-and-play installation the company’s products are known for, making them a turnkey way to take a bike’s brake lights to the next level. Plus, each module includes a lifetime warranty from Custom Dynamics.

“With limited options for the Pan America in the aftermarket lighting segment, we felt as a leader in the lighting industry we wanted to bring something to that growing segment,” says Custom Dynamics Chief Sales Officer Rob Bluma. “As the popularity of Adventure Touring grows, we’re excited to bring our proven Magic Strobes technology to Harley-Davidson Pan America riders who demand both performance and protection on the road.”

The Magic Strobes module is compact enough to tuck out of sight beneath the seat of the Pan America, and it plugs directly into the stock wiring harness. Once it has been plugged in, a rider only has one more task to do, and that’s to select one of 10 available flash or strobe patterns. The selector dial makes it simple to scroll through the patterns. Altogether, the entire task can be completed in less than 15 minutes.

Once it’s up and running, the Magic Strobes module will make a significant difference in the visibility of the brake lights. Any of the flash or strobe patterns will easily catch the eye of drivers or riders following the bike, improving both safety and visibility. This improvement offers peace of mind, especially when riding in low-light conditions or in heavy traffic.

“In today’s traffic, visibility isn’t optional, it’s essential,” says Bluma. “Magic Strobes help riders stand out with every stop.”

In addition to Magic Strobes, Custom Dynamics also has Smart Triple Play modules to call more attention to the brake lights. The same 10 flash and strobe patterns are available with the Smart Triple Play module, as well as the ability to turn the OEM rear turn signals into run, brake and turn signals. ■

In an ideal situation, the existing fitments would mount with ease, and no changes would be necessary. Of course, it’s rarely that simple.

For the ’25 Low Rider ST, the updated cam cover required a change to the heat shields to allow the Road Rage and Short Ripper to fit. Plus, the right-side saddlebag is now the same size as the left one, but the size of the bag arm hasn’t changed, so it interfered with the placement of the exhaust. That meant the existing exhaust brackets needed to be revised, as well.

Complete Care Maintaining

What Matters Most

For many of your customers, their motorcycle is a prized possession. When something matters that much to someone, they want to take good care of it. And, when it comes to maintenance fluids, lubes, and aerosols, Maxima is as passionate about its products as your customers are about their Harley-Davidsons.

From the pistons and transmission to the brakes to the paint, Maxima’s lineup covers nearly every aspect of your customers’ bikes, providing them with premium products to help keep their motorcycles looking and working their best.

The beating heart of any bike is its motor, and Maxima has specialized oils for the engine, transmission and primary.

“Protecting the engine and your customer’s investment is Maxima’s priority,” says Maxima’s Trevor Reis. To that end Maxima developed its oils specifically for V-Twin engines and their unique operating conditions. The formulas are tailored to protect a V-Twin’s moving parts, reduce friction and help the engine run cooler.

Maxima has V-Twin Mineral, Syn Blend, and Full Syn engine oils to meet your customer’s needs, as well as V-Twin Trans/Gear Oil and V-Twin Primary Oil in both conventional and synthetic formulas. If it rotates, spins or reciprocates under extreme heat and pressure, Maxima has developed a lube specific to the application.

Twin-cooled and fully liquid-cooled engines can benefit from Coolanol coolant and antifreeze. The recipe uses premium ethylene glycol and pure deionized water with advanced additives to optimize cooling and corrosion protection, helping keep those hard-working Milwaukee Eight and Revolution-powered machines running their best.

If your customers want strong brakes and good lever feedback then they need fresh brake fluid. Whether they’re riding an older, non-ABS bike that calls for DOT 5 or a newer bike that runs DOT 4, Maxima’s fluids exceed industry standards. Maxima’s silicone- and glycol-based fluids are designed to lubricate and protect critical brake components while providing reliable stopping power.

Customers should also check out SC1 High Gloss Coating. SC1 takes years and miles off anything you spray it on. From shining up dull-painted panels and plastic bodywork to turning oxidized, grayed-out rubber and plastic parts black and glossy again, SC1 is a cure-all for old, tired-looking surfaces.

Not only does SC1 make gas tanks, trim panels, frames and wheels look new again with a rich, long-lasting luster, it also keeps them looking great. Maxima’s cleaner and polish forms a durable film that repels mud, dirt and dust so parts stay looking fresh. SC1 is easy to spray on and can be left to dry or allowed to set and then buffed to a lustrous sheen with a rag. ■

New Windshield Demo Program Try Before You Buy

As the saying goes, “Seeing is believing,” but in a world of two wheels and twin cylinders, we know better –riding is believing. Sure, staring at a bike, admiring its lines or pulling the clutch a few times can spark something. But there’s no substitute for that moment when you drop it into gear and twist the throttle on an open stretch of highway. Enter the Flare® Windshield Demo Program.

That’s where the ride gets real and where the wind starts talking back. Original equipment windshields and fairings are built for the average rider. The problem? No rider is average. If the airflow doesn’t match your build or your bike’s setup, you’re stuck fighting buffeting, handling issues and a windwhipped sound system that can’t keep up. That’s why Klock Werks developed the Flare® Windshield to cut the turbulence, sharpen the look and dial in performance for real-world riders.

However, getting the perfect setup means choosing the right height and that’s where the Flare Windshield Demo Program comes in. “We are super proud of the engineering, sales and marketing teams for a job well done,” said Dealer Lead Laken Jorgenson. “We engineered a smart, intuitive system that makes it easy for dealers to help riders find their fit and make install easy and straightforward. For example, the new 2024+ FLHX and FLTR demo kits – custom packaging makes it easy to find and store blocks for each size and model; everything was built with the parts counter in mind.”

And it works. According to Klock Werks, one dealer saw a $35,000+ boost in profit just by moving 60 Flare Windshields a month using the Demo Program. That kind of success isn’t luck, but about having the tools, inventory and in-store experience that turns curiosity into confident and consistent conversions. People sell what they’re knowledgeable about. Real-time experience, product selection and in-stock availability create a 93 percent effective impulse-buying experience.

With kits covering Harley models back to 1996 and even popular Indian® bikes, the Flare Demo Program now includes new kits for 2023+ Road Glide/FLTR and Street Glide/FLHX models, bringing your newest Touring customers into the fold.

“As a Demo Dealer, you’ll give customers the opportunity to feel the difference on the spot,” said company founder Brian Klock. “With on-hand availability and support tools, plus added visibility and marketing on the Klock Werks Demo Locator [on the company’s website] bringing customers right to your door, your store becomes the go-to destination for performance-minded riders in your area.” ■

Smooth Summer Oils for Every Kind of Ride

When the summer days are long and the weather is good, it’s tempting to head out and ride to make the most of it. We can’t blame riders for wanting to take advantage of this time of year, when there are plenty of rallies, road trips and weekend rides to experience. But, before hitting the road, it’s important to make sure a bike is ready to go.

LIQUI MOLY has a range of quality oils for various applications. When customers stick to regular oil changes using the correct oil for their bike, that means they can take off on those summer rides with confidence that their engine is running at its best and staying clean.

Harley-Davidson riders often turn to LIQUI MOLY’s Motorbike HD Synth SAE 20W-50 Street oil. This fully synthetic oil is recommended for certain Harley engines, primary drives and transmissions. The oil provides resistance to wear and thermal stress, and it keeps a bike’s engine running clean, mile after mile.

LIQUI MOLY also has a mineral-based oil that provides reliable lubrication and low wear. Adding the Motorbike 4T SAE 20W-50 Street oil to an engine helps smooth out clutch operation and shifting, too.

Riders might not know where to start when it comes to choosing the correct oil for their bike and their riding needs, but the LIQUI MOLY online oil guide removes all guesswork.

“You simply select the appropriate model and year, and all the suitable products for the selected vehicle are shown,” explains Steffen Niemietz, Application Engineer for LIQUI MOLY. “All listed products of course comply with the current manufacturer’s specifications. In most cases, the required filling quantity is also displayed, so that the appropriate amount can be ordered.”

No matter which oil is selected, riders and dealers alike know they are getting high-quality, meticulously

Additional fully synthetic options from LIQUI MOLY include 10W-40, 15W-50 and 10W-30 Street oils. These high-performance oils provide performance and protection in all operating conditions, and they have excellent friction behavior. Engines stay cleaner and experience less wear.

The Motorbike 4T SAE 5W-40 HC Street oil is another high performance, fully synthetic option. This oil is a great choice for hard-to-start engines or when starting up in colder temperatures.

formulated oil whenever they select LIQUI MOLY. Strict manufacturing specifications and quality ingredients are just a part of creating LIQUI MOLY oils.

“We continually develop our products and adapt them to current technical requirements to ensure our customers always receive state-of-the-art products that allow their vehicles to operate as efficiently as possible,” Niemietz says. ■

Introducing the BRL Race Bubble Windshield

Memphis Shades has been making motorcycle windscreens and fairings since its humble beginnings in 1974. Now, the company is proud to announce the signing of a presenting sponsorship agreement with the Bagger Racing League for 2025. In concert with the new partnership, Memphis Shades has released a Bagger Racing League Race Bubble windshield that adds racing style and performance to 2015–2023 Harley-Davidson FLT Road Glide models.

The BRL Race Bubble windshield was created for racers, performance-driven riders and those who prefer a more minimalist racing design aesthetic. But, the BRL windscreen has more than just good looks. It also has track-proven high-speed aerodynamics built into each screen, enhancing the race or street setup on FLT Road Glide models, including CVO models. This is the same windshield used by many racers competing in the Bagger Racing League. It smooths out the surface over the stock air vent opening to improve the aerodynamic profile.

Made from durable 1/8-inch thick Lucite, the BRL Windscreen fits stock fairings on FLT models, and provides the same aerodynamic performance as it does for many top racers in the Bagger Racing League. Added adhesive-backed soft foam pads help protect the stock fairing, and each windscreen kit includes all necessary hardware for a seamless installation, whether preparing for a track day or group ride.

The BRL Race Bubble windshield was designed to take your Performance Bagger’s aerodynamics to the next level with a race screen intended for speed, style and functionality. Made in the USA at its Memphis headquarters, BRL screens are available in clear or dark black smoke tints. Dark black smoke is a black tint with 10 percent visible light transmission.

For those customers who want more coverage, Memphis Shades makes a line of Spoiler windshields for Bagger models in various tints and heights.

As a proud new supporter of the Bagger Racing League for 2025, Memphis Shades continues its longstanding tradition of providing motorcycle riders and racers with improved wind protection and aerodynamics. Now, riders can add track-inspired and race-proven aerodynamics to their Harley Bagger that complements the machine’s look.

Allen Mueller, owner of Memphis Shades, adds, “We’ve been making Memphis Shades Spoiler windshields for Baggers all along,” said Allen Mueller, owner of Memphis Shades. “But, seeing the growth of Performance Baggers, we were excited to work with BRL to develop the BRL Race Bubble windscreen for racers that fits right on stock fairings as well as fiberglass replicas.” ■

WClassic Components Rims

hether someone is building a custom bike or freshening up an older model, nothing says classic quite the way spoked wheels do. These iconic wheels never go out of style, but they will need repair or replacement as the years and miles add up. Luckily, Drag Specialties has everything a dealer or builder needs to get things rolling again.

Drag Specialties has a range of replacement rims, spokes and wheel bearing kits for older models as well as custom applications. That way, the perfect rim size, spoke style and even finish can be carefully selected.

and Spoke Sets for Timeless Style

Drag Specialties has three types of rims available, including the chrome 40-spoke rims in a 21-inch size, 16-inch chrome rims with spoke dimples and rolled edge front rims with the same dropcenter styling as OE.

All those classic rims need spokes and Drag Specialties has a range of options, including full spoke sets, spoke nipples and twisted chrome spoke sets for an extra touch of style.

“We are offering a dealer the ability to assemble his choice of a center hub, diameter and width of a rim and corresponding spokes to fit his customers’ needs,” notes Drag’s Tom Motzko. “Not to mention the option of simply replacing standard-finish spokes with chrome, or polished stainless, or replacing a rim that’s rusted or has peeling chrome.”

It’s those old wheels that have seen better days that can especially benefit from having all these options available separately from Drag Specialties. Rather than having to replace the entire wheel, only the damaged components need to be swapped out for new ones.

Drag Specialties has three types of rims available. The chrome 40-spoke custom rims are available in the everpopular 21-inch size, and the rolled edges add strength. Drag Specialties16-inch chrome rims have spoke dimples designed to accept nearly all spoke lacing patterns, plus side metal valve or side rubber valve stem types.

The rolled edge front rims from Drag have an identical spoke dimple pattern to that of OEM rims and the same drop-center styling, making these show-chromed steel rims a great way to get that stock look.

When the spokes need replacing, Drag’s chrome and stainless steel spoke sets are ideal for custom and stock applications alike. There are also spoke sets designed exclusively for Drag Specialties spun steel and Excel aluminum rims. For riders or builders who want to draw even

No matter what combination of rims and spokes a rider opts for, Motzko says, “a laced wheel that’s all cleaned up is awful beautiful turning in the sunlight!”

Drag Specialties also has wheel bearing kits, which come complete with all necessary tapered bearings and seals required for each application. The seals are made from TC nitrile elastomer and help keep out water and dirt. ■

Super Sealing Gasket Tech for a Wide Range of Models

Cometic Gaskets is on the gas. The Ohio-based company keeps its ear to the rail and is always working to develop products for the latest models coming off assembly lines. Harley-Davidson’s Revolution Max-powered bikes – the Pan America, Sportster S, and Nightster – are great examples. Shortly after these models were released, Cometic had gaskets to support the bikes’ most common needs.

“Whenever a new model comes out, we immediately focus on gaskets and seals associated with go-fast parts,” says Cometic Marketing Manager Jason Moses. That means exhaust gaskets to go with that performance exhaust upgrade, head and base gaskets to support cylinder and head work, dipstick and drain plug O-rings, and even crankcase gaskets.

The aftermarket has yet to produce an oversize piston kit for the Revolution Max, but Cometic is ready when the day arrives. “We talk to piston manufacturers to see what the bigger bore sizes are going to be,” says Moses. The Revolution Max engine is already a massively powerful engine that sees heavy doses of throttle, so Cometic’s stock-bore head gasket uses the company’s MLX technol ogy to ensure optimal sealing.

“The MLX gaskets have special sealing technology that simulates O-ringing the head,” explains Moses. “There’s a bore shim that is 0.004” thicker than the rest of the head gasket. This bore shim hugs the combustion area on the cylinder and head sealing surfaces, increasing sealing pressure over a concentrated area.”

The MLX-style head gasket is great for performance builds involving high-compression pistons, a turbo or nitrous, so Cometic is paving the way for builders to push the limits of the Revolution Max.

Of course, many of your customers aren’t on the latest liquid-cooled monsters rolling out of Milwaukee. If they’re on older bikes, even decades-old equipment, Cometic has them covered with gaskets and seals for everything from basic maintenance to complete overhauls and big-bore builds.

“We have MLS gaskets for all the popular Harleys going back to the ’60s,” says Moses. MLS (Multi-Layer Steel) gaskets are engineered to act like a spring, so they’ll lift with the head, keeping combustion pressure inside the cylinder, where it belongs. Cometic’s head gaskets are available in standard and big-bore sizes in a variety of thicknesses to aid tuning.

For bottom-end assemblies like primary covers and derby covers, Cometic has AFM (Aluminum Foamet Material)

When it comes to Harley-Davidson’s Revolution Maxpowered bikes – the Pan America, Sportster S, and Nightster – Cometic has your customers covered with a wide range of gaskets to support the bikes’ most common needs.

gaskets that work without sealants, even on well-worn engines. “AFM has a malleable aluminum core so it’s not going to push out or suck in. Closed-foam coating fills gaps and can accommodate component flex,” says Moses. ■

Modern Parts for Old Iron

An Essential Source for Hard-to-Find V-Twin Parts

Dealers looking for a consistent source to procure obsolete and difficult-to-find American V-Twin parts – especially vintage models – can consider Eastern MC Parts and its treasure trove of products that can be found in the FatBook and the OldBook. Eastern MC Parts has been a mainstay in the V-Twin segment since the company was founded in 1972 by Gil and Carol May.

Before Eastern MC Parts, the Mays opened and operated Gil’s Cycle Shop starting in the 1960s in Long Island, New York. They sold parts, repaired bikes and, over time, began sourcing hard-to-find parts, sometimes manufacturing them if needed. Eastern MC Parts started as a manufacturer and supplier of these obscure and hard-to-find OEM replacement parts, quickly gaining a reputation for high-quality Harley-Davidson parts. In 1987 the company relocated to Blackville, South Carolina. Today, it continues to expand its American V-Twin parts catalog under the Eastern MC Parts banner, which many may recognize of because of the company’s MC patch logo.

The list of parts available from Eastern MC Parts is a veritable laundry list of obscure, obsolete and vintage parts for American V-twin models, many manufactured in-house. These are critical components like cam and pinion shaft bearings, shift forks, crank pins, clutch hub nuts, bearing spacers, suspension damper springs, and complete replacement axles, to name but a few examples.

Many of these parts had only been available as OE in the past or were obsolete. Eastern MC Parts recognized the demand for these replacement parts, and specializes in manufacturing and distributing parts that can be difficult to source, especially for obsolete vintage models.

Dealers will find a comprehensive list of available Eastern MC Parts in the index of both the FatBook and the OldBook. There is also a current list of SKUs with real-time inventory levels (updated daily) can be accessed through the Drag Specialties website.

Eastern MC products are competitively priced, though the primary focus remains on sourcing quality materials and implementing precision manufacturing methods for a high-quality finished product. Eastern MC Parts caters to DIY enthusiasts, custom builders, dealer service departments and those who value precise, reliable parts when rebuilding or customizing American V-Twins.

Dealers looking for a consistent source of obsolete and difficult-tofind American V-Twin parts – especially vintage models – should check out Eastern MC Parts’ treasure trove of products.

Drag Specialties makes it easy for its dealers to source items from Eastern MC Parts, with over 600 SKUs stocked and available from regional warehouses. Simply look for the company’s Eastern MC patch logo to know that you’ve found the right brand.

With over 50 years of experience in the V-Twin motorcycle market and a solid customer reputation, Eastern MC Parts has become a go-to source for hard-to-find V-Twin parts. ■

Stopping in Style Custom

V-Twin Brake Rotors, High-Quality Pads

When it comes to appealing to the American V-Twin crowd, it can’t only be about function. Style is a critical element, as well as performance. This is what prompted the Danish team at SBS to collaborate with Kodlin USA in creating its newest line of brake rotors for American V-Twin motorcycles.

The new SBS 7XXX disc series features seven-spoke, nine-spoke and 10-spoke rotors, each with signature designs and finishes created by custom Harley-Davidson builder Len Kodlin. His unique style infused with SBS braking performance and technology gives your customers an upgrade in stopping power, and a custom look.

“When you upgrade your bike both in terms of performance and your visual appearance with the new SBS V-Twin brake rotors co-designed by Kodlin USA, you also need [high-quality] brake pads for your ride,” says Thomas Midtgaard-Jørgensen, Marketing and Product Manager at SBS Friction A/S. In fact, when your customers replace rotors, they should also replace brake pads. To optimize per formance, reliability and braking feel, SBS maintains that the obvious fit for SBS brake rotors is, of course, SBS brake pads.

Much like the line of brake rotors, there are several options in the range of SBS American V-Twin brake pads featuring different compounds. H.HS is the OE replacement option for front brakes, ideally paired with the H.LS high-performance rear. These are equal to or better than OEM brake pads for modern sport and big touring bikes. The sintered compound is fine-tuned for street use, formulated for low wear, and high thermal stability for optimum brake feel. The H.LS rear differs from the front with an exclusive rear-wheel compound that SBS says helps avoid over-braking and rear-wheel lockup.

The H.CT brake pads from SBS feature a “high-power noise reduced formulation.” Designed for both front and rear application, the H.CT brake pads are ideal for bikes with customized brake systems and discs. Compatible with stainless steel, cast iron, chromed and polished brake discs, the SBS says that the H.CT pads maintain positive control at the brake lever in both wet and dry conditions.

SBS’ range of brake pads perfectly complement the SBS/ Kodlin USA 7XXX brake rotor series. There are several options in the range of SBS American V-Twin brake pads, each one offering a unique set of features and benefits.

The H.HF series from SBS is the “ultra quiet” option featuring ceramic material for long pad life, low dust and low rotor wear. The H.HF brake pads are offered in both front and rear, and feature SBS’s innovative noise-reduction technology. These are ideal OE replacement for organic brake pads and bikes with non-sintered pads, best suited to commuters, general purpose street and cruiser motorcycles.

A useful note for your environmentally conscious customers, the H.HS high performance and H.HF ultra quiet are also part of the SBS Better Brakes collection. Noted by the green leaf and “Better Brakes” logo on the package, these brake pads use the company’s newest compound free of copper and nickel, and its ceramic compounds are also antimony free. ■

JClassic Bikes, New Tricks

A Seat that Likes to Show Off

ust because a bike is old school doesn’t mean it can’t learn a few new tricks. LePera Motorcycle Seats now offers its best-selling seat, the TailWhip, for older-model FXST and XL Sportsters.

The TailWhip is designed for showing off. For many riders, that might simply mean making their bike stand out with a seat that features a bold “whipped up” look. Other riders will appreciate the way the TailWhip enables showing off of a different kind; its design gives a rider plenty of control, so it’s great for demonstrating advanced riding skills.

The styling of the TailWhip is ideal for more than just looking good, though. The deep back support for the driver and ample space make it a comfortable ride for both the driver and a passenger.

“These bikes may be classic, but they still deserve comfort, style and attitude that match the ride,” says Christine LePera, company Vice President. “Just because your FXST or XL Sportster is a little more old-school doesn’t mean it should be left behind – and now, it won’t be.”

Like all LePera seats, the TailWhip is supported by a powder-coated steel base plate with a carpeted bottom, providing an outstanding fit on the bike. High-density Marathon foam ensures a comfortable ride and gives the TailWhip it’s distinctive shape. Riders can choose from a variety of stitch finishes, too. ■

Brake & Clutch Components for American V-Twins

P Brakes are more than just brake pads and rotors. Despite what the name implies, DP also manufactures high-performance clutch kits.

Initially part of Dunlop Aviation, a division of the Dunlop Rubber Company, in the early 1970s, the motorcycle brake division was sold off and became DP Brakes. Today, DP is a leading supplier of motorcycle brake pads, rotors and clutch components.

For dealers seeking a reliable source for replacement Harley-Davidson brake and clutch components, DP products are readily available from Drag Specialties, providing service departments a way to shorten the repair and service lifecycles.

As a brief review, DP brake pads are engineered using a proprietary mix of material ingredients for all-around performance in all conditions. They replace OE units with premium sintered units for less brake fade, dust and noise.

On the other hand, DP brake rotors are laser-cut from 410 stainless steel for improved feel and stopping power. Each rotor is precision ground for flatness and an attractive

finish. These rotors make an ideal combination when paired with DP sintered brake pads.

Lastly, DP clutch kits and components are designed to eliminate clutch fade and slippage while efficiently transferring all that big twin horsepower to the rear wheel. DP’s exclusive high-heat friction materials are the secret sauce for fade-free Harley clutch performance. ■

Smooth Operator

Simplified Bearing Swaps

The average motorcycle wheel rotates about 850 times per mile, which means the number on the odometer represents a dizzying number of revolutions of the bearings in the hubs. HarleyDavidson bearings are reliable, but they do wear out, and when they do, Motion Pro’s Wheel Bearing Driver Set for Harley models makes replacing the bearings — and keeping your customers rolling smoothly — easy.

“This new set was developed to work with the large-diameter bearings found in 2000 and later Harley models,” says Eric Clay, Motion Pro’s product expert, “so it comes with 2-inch, 1-inch, ¾-inch, and 25mm anodized-aluminum drivers.” The drivers match the OD of the bearings, while one of the smaller adapters can often be nested into the larger driver so it sits within the bearing ID, centering the tool. The durable steel handle can be used with a hammer or a shop press.

Working hand-in-hand with the Driver Set is Motion Pro’s Wheel Bearing Remover Set for Harleys. “Removing an old bearing is less delicate work than installing a new part

so a drift will do the job, but the driver and collets in this kit ensure the bearing is pushed out squarely, helping to preserve your customer’s hubs,” says Clay.

If there’s a service task, Motion Pro probably has a specialty tool to tackle the job. This new Wheel Bearing Driver Set and the Wheel Bearing Remover Set are available in the Tire & Service catalog. ■

Staying Up to Date Software Updates for Diagnostic Tools

As motorcycles have become more high-tech, the tools used to service them have become more high-tech, too. Keeping the software up to date on the MOTO Pro and MOTO Mini American from CanDo means having the latest diagnostic tool information in the palm of your hand.

The MOTO Pro is great for dealers who service a wide range of motorcycle and recreational vehicle brands, while the MOTO Mini American is ideal for V-Twin dealers who focus on Harley-Davidson or Indian models.

Both of those diagnostic tools have recently gotten a significant software update. For Harleys, 2024 models with a non-Skyline operating system have been added, allowing dealers to perform operations like remote immobilization, speedometer pairing, reprogramming of Harley contact badges and keys, and startup PIN code change.

For 2024 Indian models, dealers can now provide key programming, light configuration and suspension configuration.

The latest software for both tools also includes a new Repair Information tab, which is an easy way to access things like wiring diagrams, key programming procedures and diagnostic port locations.

“Most OEs attempt to keep their repair information proprietary, forcing customers to be at their dealership’s whim for repair and service,” notes CanDo’s Victor Rivilla. “At CanDo, we try our best to plug into as many makes and models as possible, to ensure our tool has coverage for the latest makes and models.” ■

Power Fix

Fixing Parasitic Battery Drain

Finding the source of high parasitic drain in a motorcycle is time consuming and frustrating. Modern motorcycles have several “always on” components requiring power to remain at ready for the convenience of the rider.

Any motorcycle with a key fob and/or electronic settings – such as suspension or different mode settings – that need to remain in memory will naturally have a higher parasitic drain. The most recent trend of Baggers with factory fitted luggage that can be unlocked by a key fob, adds even more complexity.

A modern BCM or ECM has a stand-by mode during which current draw should be very low, but it takes just one component like those luggage locking relays to not be working exactly right that can fire that BCM up to active

status, resulting in a higher draw, sometimes up 1 Amp. This can even occur if the key fob is stored on or near the parked motorcycle.

The recommended solution is hooking up an OptiMate 2 DUO (p/n 3807-0572) – also available in Drag Specialties livery (p/n 3807-0705) – which can supply up to 2 Amps during 24/7 maintenance. This is sufficient to overcome excessive parasitic draw. The OptiMate 2 DUO can also charge and maintain lead-acid and lithium batteries.

If your customer needs a faster charging option the Drag Specialties OptiMate 5 (p/n 3807-0755) version 2 delivers up to 4 Amps, ideal for modern lead-acid AGM batteries. It can even recover a dead-flat 12V battery from as low as 0.5 Volts. ■

Cross-Terrain Brake Upgrades for Pan America Bikes

Adventure riding may be the most demanding on two-wheels. Not in the sense of elite racing, but demanding performance across conflicting terrain and conditions. HarleyDavidson’s Pan America models achieve this versatility, but there’s always juice left in the squeeze.

The Pan America platform is offered in various trims, including ST (standard), Special and CVO, each getting increasingly more advanced with ride-enhancing features like active suspension and electronic rider aids. Yet the brakes remain the same, and EBC is here to change that.

Each Pan America’s braking componentry is identical from the factory with a big dual-rotor setup in the front and a single in the rear that work well off the showroom floor. But, after miles of high-speed pavement to dust, dirt and mud off-road all pushed by the powerful Revolution Max

engine, these components can wear out quickly.

“Our Double-H Sintered brake pads are a natural upgrade for the varying demands of Adventure riding,” said Gary Taylor, Motorcycle Product Manager for EBC. “The added bite makes a difference riders can feel when stopping these heavy Adventure bikes, and with low fade and efficient heat dissipation, braking performance stays consistent.”

A perfect pairing for EBC’s sintered pads are its battle-proven rotors. With options of floating or fixed for the front and fixed for the rear, EBC rotors amplify durability and reliability for Pan America customers. ■

FGoing Up Big-Bore

or those customers who have the “go big or go home” mentality when it comes to their Milwaukee-Eight power plant, the KB Performance Super Duty bigbore piston kits for M8 engines might be exactly what they’re looking for.

These pistons have a 4.250-inch bore size to bump a 107-inch engine up to a displacement of 124 inches. Both 114inch and 117-inch engines jump to 128 inches with one of these kits.

Kits for M8

Engines

When it comes to compression performance, the big-bore pistons for 107-inch engines (p/n 0910-6403) take the compression ratio from the stock 11.1:1 up to 11.8:1. With the kit for 114-inch and 117-inch M8 engines (p/n 0910-6405), the compression ratio jumps to 11.7:1.

KB’s Super Duty pistons have a Line2Line abradable skirt coating. This coating reduces piston rock and noise, and

it contributes to the best possible ring seal. “These Super Duty series piston kits are loaded with coating features that will enhance the performance and greatly reduce mechanical noise,” explains Marko Glush from KB Pistons.

All Super Duty pistons feature a Type 3 hard-anodized crown and top ring groove to provide an extra line of defense against corrosion, especially if alcohol-added fuels are running through the system.

A high-quality ring set and wrist pins with wire locks are included in each kit.

Customers can also opt for a 4.255-inch overbore piston kit for both the 124-inch (p/n 0910-6404) and 128-inch (p/n 0910-6406) displacement options. ■
