---------THEME Friends Together ...

Has anybody ever asked you to describe what makes a good friend? When you were younger. you usually had an answer, but as you matured. friendships became more complex. Now friendships play a greater role in your life. and your friends have become more to you than just playmates. Deing a friend involves much responsibility on your behalf. You must be caring and understanding whenever your friend needs help or advice. and you must be a person to whom they can give their trust and confidence. On the other hand, friendship, like an investment. has its payoffs. The more people put into it. the more they will get out of it. A friend is a person with whom one can share their happiness. ambitions. and sucesses. So therefore. friendship should be a privilege. not an obligation.

2

Friends are important in other ways. They have a great influence on one's life, and likewise, you have an influence on theirs. Since friendship is an investment of oneself, you should be sure to invest in the right places and for the right reasons. This will save you many regrets. All in all, friendship is no subject to be taken lightly. It is a time-consuming responsibility and one that requires much patience and compromising. For these reasons, be sure to choose your friends wisely. After all, true friendship lasts forever.

Although old friendships may have seemed lmport9nt this year, new friendships could have been just as meaningful. Some people had a hard time making friends with the new students at P.H.S. The new students that came to Pepperell had an equally difficult time becoming acquainted with the other students. A simple solution could have cured both problems. These students should have become Involved in extra curricular activities. These activities could have given students a good chance to meet one another and start new friendships. For the athletic types, sports were open to participation. People who weren't interested In sports could have joined cheerleading or band. If none of these activities seemed appealing, several clubs met once a month. These clubs were always open to new membership. They often sponsored dances, fund raisers, and other special events which also enabled students to meet one another. Often students didn 't take advantage of these chances to become familiar with each other, but they can always try again next year!

STUDENT LIFE Life of a dragon ...

The opening of this school year was full of confusion . The construction caused many problems at P.H.S. Trying to change classes was always a major inconvenience. For awhile there were only two doors to enter and exit the main building. When going from buildings to troilors, everyone hod to walk around behind the bondroom in the hot sun or pouring down rain . All the deportments hod to change locations on the campus. The science and business teachers found themselves in the troilors. The English deportment was relocated to the annex. Moth and social studies resided in the main building. This hod everyone confused about where to go to classes. In the rain, Pepprell High School become a giant mud factory. There were puddles everywhere. Hooded bodies ran around trying to get to classes on time. Many pairs of white shoes were ruined during the rainy season. Not even Shout could get the Georgia red mud out of the shoes.

6

Some thought that the school was not a good place to be because of all the chaotic happenings. In spite of it all, students still had good times helping each other, laughing with one another, and being friends in general. No matter how much confusion went on at P.H.S., these good times always made the day worth while .

.

7

As o student at Pepperell. hove you ever reminisced about how you used to behove in years post? Often as students advanced to higher levels in high school , they realized how differently they acted in the previous grades. Each grade, freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior, gave students o new memory to odd to the already long collection mode in times post. As freshmen , students were unsure of themselves. The more experienced high school students ployed practical jokes on these poor defenseless newcomers. Did you ever foll prey to one of these jokes? It was hard to think of it as funny then , but as time passed insecurity was replaced by other qualities. These qualities gave the right combination to enable one to laugh about his freshman experiences. The sophomore year marked o new era of life. Sophomores hod it mode, so they thought! This could hove been the year to pay the older kids bock for oil the jokes. and to make up o few new ones to go along with them . Over-confidence become the sophomores' enemy though . Instead of getting anyone into trouble, they fell victim to their own joke. Remember?

Well , thinking bock, ones Junior year in high school hod to hove been better than the prev ious ones. With the freshman and sophomore year behind, surely one could finally hove time to relax. Chemistry got in the way a little bit though . Then , there was always junior algebra homework to do that Mrs. Brinson always checked the next day. When you look bock at those years, do you remember any of those experiences? Along with those memories, don ' t forget the big senior year. That was supposed to be the year that your graduating class ruled the school. The funny port about It was that you still hod homework, you still hod to mind all your teachers, and you still hod to get a blue slip when you were late to class. The only difference was that the seniors got in trouble for being late more often than underclassmen. Reminiscing about post experiences should be a lot of fun to you and your friends, but remember that the memories you hove mode between freshmen orientation and senior graduation should never be forgotten!

9

According to the Webster 's Dictionary, pride is defined as the state or quality of being proud or as a reasonable or justifiable self-respect. This is a good definition, but it locks the personal experiences and feelings that the students at P.H.S. ore capable of putting with it. This year marked the second year of construction in Dragon territory. Instead of getting upset about it, the students were very understanding. All of the transitions and adjustments that the school was going through were token in stride . Everyone knew the end result would be to the benefit of all concerned. This is on example of pride . Pride especially could be seen around the school on days preceding a football game. Cheerleaders pointed spirit signs to place around the school and on the fences of the ploying site. This year instead of the way it was done in the post, the Student Council kept a Spirit Chart. Football games. class color days. pep rallies. and other spirit related events were kept on a large poster In the lunchroom. Closs participation at each event was recorded on the chart.

10

E

The class spirit competition could have caused a lot of hard feelings between the winners and losers, but at P.H.S. everyone was proud of their participation no matter who won or lost. The students were proud just to be able to say, " Heyl I am a Pepperell High School Dragon! " Pride was also shown by the students traveling to Barron Stadium and various other locations to cheer the Dragons to victory. When the ballgames were played at really far away places, a " Dragon Train" was formed at the high school. The purpose of the train of cars was to enable all the fans to ride to the away game without getting lost. The cars were decorated with the Dragon colors and spirit signs. The fact that it was raining or cold did not seem to matter to the Dragon fans, they came and cheered just the same. Spirit and pride were evident everywhere the Dragons were seen. This sense of pride enabled Pepperell to win two competitions at the Coosa Valley Fair on the same night. The cheerleaders won the Cheerleading Competition , and the student body won the spirit competition displaying school pride.

11

It seemed that fashion trends drastically changed during the past school year. Many students at Pepperell High School said that their style of fashion was wearing large sweaters, shorts, pants, etc. While other students felt that the sloppy look, including sweat shirts and baggy pants, were still in. As fall arrived paisley and mixed plaids became the craze. Along with fashion changes, music styles also varied . The past year was a year of new artists, Ready for the World, Til Tuesday, and Tears for Fears, ore a few of the new groups that hit the charts. Also, the ever popular Madonna, Prince , Bryan Adams, and Wham, still reigned during this past year. Some great come backs included Bruce Springsteen and Tina Turner.

"

What's your passion for fashion? This question was asked in a student survey that was token during the post year. Many students who answered this survey thought that the present day fashions were not influenced by popular rock stars. However, more realistic students answered "yes". These students admitted that the clothing styles of today were indeed influenced by rock stars.

Another survey was token on rock stars. These were the favorites: Prince Motley Crue Madonna Ready for the World

13

The end of the 1986 school year brought with it many hopes and expectations. The Class of 1986 was looking forward to graduation, the Senior trip to Daytona, college. and other future plans. Juniors were anticipating the coming of their graduation and their " SENIOR YEAR" ! Sophomores were excited about the coming year because they order and receive class rings their junior year. Freshmen, well, they were just looking forward to getting one step closer to being able to get out of here. Construction of our new school brought about many feelings from the students. Seniors. juniors. and sophomores were ecstatic because they finally got to experience the joy of air conditioning . Freshmen experienced mixed emotions because they entered a world they knew almost nothing about. Also, the students were glad to mean It when they said " home games" ! Overall, there was only one problem with the construction. When it rained, it seemed like everyone was floating away. Most P.H.S. students seemed satisfied with this school year. Let's just hope the coming year Is even better!

Playing the state champs wasn't going to be easy, but the Dragons gave it their best shot. Despite their efforts, the team fell to the Chiefs' experience 35-0. This loss began a two game losing streak that included the game with West Rome and the game at Coosa. The Dragons last at the Eagle Stadium 21-0. The next week the Dragons traveled to Villa Rica where they pounced on the Wildcats to gain a third victory . The game was a close one but the Dragons won with a score of 29-28. The week ending October 18 marked a special time in the life of each Dragon. The student body was excited as the first game on our new field drew near. Even though the Dragons lost to Cartersville 21-28 it was still considered a great victory to finally be home. Once again the Dragons packed up and traveled to Central of Carrolton . With high hopes the Dragons gave it their best shot but they fell to the experience of the Lions and had to accept defeat. The final score was 28-20. Back at home for a second game the Dragons prepared for the annual Homecoming. The team was really fired up for this special game and proved it by beating the Haralson County Rebels 27-6. The last game of the season was against the Rockmart Yellow Jackets. The Dragons hustled for a victory but were surprisingly defeated by a score of 21-22. This was Coach Hunnicutt"s third year as head coach at P.H.S. Since his arrival three years ago, the Dragons have progressively improved. This year' s record of 4-5-1 was the best we' ve had in ten years.

This year's Spirit Week was a very successful one. Many students participated in varied events, often with interesting results. Spirit Week proved again that Pepperell High students have enough spirit to do anything ... no matter how outrageous it is. Monday was "warm-up" day the day everyone gets a chance to be "casual" in their gym suits or aerobic outfits. Tuesday was declared "nerd" day. Although there were no significant changes in some of the teachers, spirit was shown. Everyone appeared in knee-pants, boat shoes, and pen-packs. It was time for "Revenge of the Nerds." Wednesday was "surf's up" day. The campus was flooded with surfers and beach bunnies. A few of the more daring students brought along their frisbees and skateboards.

Thursday was "twin" day. The purpose being for everyone to come dressed like one of their friends. Some people, however, misunderstood and came as their favorite teachers. Friday, a pep rally was held to get students fired up for the big game later that evening. Classes demonstrated spirit by wearing individual class colors. This year's Homecoming game served to dedicate our new stadium to the students and the community. This was truly a Dragon Homecoming victory.

CLASS OF '87 Have no fear ... .only one more year!

Junior class officers: Drad Dennett, President, Roger Bevels, Vice President; Kendra Harris, Secretary; Laura Ray, Treasurer. Well, class of '87, you have almost made it. Some how it just didn't seem real. Your junior year held many responsibilities, as well as exciting plans for the future. For two years the class of '87 worked hard selling candy in order to raise money for the prom. Thanks to Coach Hall and Mrs. Langham, the fund raising efforts were a great success. The juniors planned a great prom with the money that they earned.

let's face it; we' re great! Sophomore class officers: Matthew Smart, President, Dyrece Yarborough , Vice President; Laura Woodard, Secretary ; Renee Halder, Treasurer.

Sophomores, it's two down and two to go. Are you gonna make it? You could undoubtedly make it if all it took was spirit. You cheered your way to winning the spirit stick at the first pep rally which shows the enthusiasm you project at PHS. Don "t lase your ambition , and you 'll keep the fire burning . However, the sophomore year was not all fun and games, as is true with any year in school. Along with pep rallies came the heavy academic burdens. However, no matter how rough classes became , with all the homework and books, most people made it through their sophomore year. Along with the academic responsibilities came the task of raising money for the Junior-Senior pram, which you will sponsor next year. Hang in there , sophomores. You ' ve done a great jab so far. Keep up the goad work and you 'll make it ta 1988.

we've just begun to serve our time! Freshman class officers: Jimmy Womack , President: Leslie Roberson, Vice President: Chad Bishop, Secretary; Robbyn Roberson, Treasurer.

This year the freshman class had many advantages above the other classes. The school was nearly completed, and, unlike last year's freshmen , they did not have to endure the heavy construction and unavoidable inconveniences. They were the first to express a new and reborn pride in our school. The freshman class may have been the " low man on the totem pole" but they were the first class to experience such things as air conditioning and heat, a football stadium and a totally renovated campus which made the atmosphere more comfortable. So, class of '89 show pride in your new school and represent it well.

DEDICATION To the one we love

Dedication Is a special word with a special meaning. As defined by Webster's dictionary, dedication means an act or rite of dedicating to a divine being or to a sacred use: a name and often a message, refixed to a literary work in tribute to a person or cause. and self sacrificing devotion. In the twenty-seven years that Miriam Bennett has been a teacher at Pepperell High School, she has more than fulfilled this definition. She has dedicated to her students more than just teaching skills. Mrs. Bennett has given a part of herself that has been carried on by her previous students who are now teachers at P.H.S. Mrs. Bennett Is a motivating and an Inspiring lady. , ' Because she has dedicated so much of herself in so many ways, we the Dragon Staff dedicate the 1985-86 Dragon to Mrs. Miriam Bennett. My Philosophy of Teaching Encouraging, lnspiri,:ig. and developing academic capacities In those who have been gifted with great talents and those who find achievement difficult are not always easy tasks. However, teachers must never become discouraged: instructors must constantly strive to prepare students for the future, help them see the opportunities that might be available to them through learning and development of skills, and remember that our influence might mean the difference between success and failure for Individuals as they encounter life's challenges. Above all, teachers must help students realize that self-discipline and individual effort are most important to a person 's future success and happiness. Educators must seek to encourage all students to set all goals for themselves and then to work diligently to fulfill them. - Miriam W. Bennett.
