The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. European settlement began in the 1830s, with the township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. Pambula now has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafés, restaurants, retailers, pubs, a bakery, deli, ethical fashion store, an organic and bulk food shop and an oldfashioned milkbar.
