Welcome to Nashville More than a place, Nashville was a notion. It was the epicenter of a certain sound and style. It was somewhere people chased dreams and skyrocketed to success. It was aspirational, even for us, who wanted to be nowhere near the stage. We’re in it for the outfits. “We spent hours upon hours at our grandparents’ house watching these performers,” recalls Cheryl McMullen, Lead Designer for Double D Ranch. “And while we would sing along, that was never what enthralled me. I was there for the outfits. I wanted to know what the stars were wearing. I don’t know that I was really aware of it at the time, but I was studying silhouettes and different fits and embellishments. I was admiring it, but I was also absorbing it.” These were our heroes, our idols. They were country, like us, but glamorous, very unlike us; they made an impression on us, the way superstars tend to do. So, despite the fact that Cheryl designed this collection having never even visited Nashville yet, that mythical musical town and everything we imagined it to be, was an influence strong enough to belong among our 30th Anniversary collections in ‘I Go Back’. The Nashville collection is strong, sassy, and a little bit sexy. It’s rockabilly glam. It channels some of the edgier characters in country music, like Johnny Cash and Hank Williams. It features bold blacks and bright reds, luxe velvets and racy lace, a Wanda Jackson-inspired fringed dress, and possibly some of the most badass boots we’ve ever designed.

Sitting Pretty in Music City Nashville is a town full of performers. Everywhere is a venue – the airport, the coffee shop, the hotel lobby – and even the sidewalk’s a stage. Staying spotlight-ready is just part of the game. In Matagorda, our makeup went amber. In Cody, we went gritty. In Nashville, we went for rock ‘n’ roll glam. “This look isn’t all that different from what we did for the Midnight Cowboy collection,” said Lisa Martensen, our longtime makeup guru. “We did a retro 1960s cat eye, a defined brow, and a nude lip. We stayed away from a bold red lip because there is quite a bit of red in this collection and there was the potential that it would either clash or detract, so instead we really played up the eye. I even put false eyelashes on the models; a lot of times I don’t even use mascara, so this is a really dramatic look.” Go dramatic with your makeup. Go full volume with your hair. Tuning Your Wardrobe The world is your stage. Every day is a performance. Your wardrobe is your instrument. And like any instrument, it needs to be tuned every now and then to stay at its best. No, you don’t need a total overhaul with every change of the season, but it is a great time to make little tweaks that can make a big difference.
Do a quick evaluation of your key pieces. Are your staples getting stale? Worn out? Overworn? Take an objective look at the state of your jeans. Evaluate your undergarments and basics (tees, tanks, camis), especially your blacks and whites – are you whites getting dingy and your darks getting dull? Check the soles of your boots. Determine what needs to be repaired, replaced, or culled altogether.
Rotate your wardrobe. No, literally. Getting dressed can almost become muscle memory. You reach for the same pieces in the same places, over and over. Without meaning to, or even realizing it, you can easily get into a rut. By simply rearranging what hangs where, you can breathe new life into your look.
Make a wish list. Ok, we know this is practically a daily hobby for our DDR gals, but get serious about it. Think about the statement pieces you’ve always dreamed of having, the kind that you’ll hold onto for life, investment pieces you’re willing to save for. Maybe it’s a designer purse. Maybe it’s a leather jacket. Maybe it’s a vintage squash blossom. Decide what piece would bring you the most satisfaction and then make it your mission. It won’t be instant gratification, but the saving and the searching is half the fun! And man, oh man, is that needle in the haystack rewarding when you find it.

Nashville Sounds Good to Me Hard to believe, but this entire collection was concepted and created before Cheryl ever stepped foot in Music City. It wasn’t the actual town that inspired her, but the sound. It’s debatable whether most of what’s coming out of Nashville these days counts as country music, but you can’t deny that Music City has cranked out some classics. “Country music was the soundtrack of our childhood,” Cheryl recalled. “It was our companion when doing chores, it was background noise while I played Barbies, and it was a hobby in and of itself; my sisters and I spent so many Saturday nights singing along with Tammy Wynette and twirling to Charlie Pride. I couldn’t design ‘I Go Back’, a group of collections dedicated to nostalgia, without including Nashville.” And it wasn’t just the music, it was everything that Nashville represented that impacted us. Fame. Glamour. Dreams coming true. Making it. Though we were worlds apart, we felt like we could relate to these people on our televisions and our radios in a way. Many of them came from small towns and meager beginnings, and while we never had any delusions of becoming performers, that bolstered in us a confidence that we could do anything.

Hatch Show Print Nashville is home to many legendary institutions. The Grand Ole Opry. The Country Music Hall of Fame. Hatch Show Print. For more than 140 years, this unassuming print shop has been creating iconic show posters for some of country music’s most iconic artists. By hand. Despite vast technological advances in printing techniques since its inception in 1879, Hatch Show Print has stayed true to its original letterpress style of printing and their customer base has stayed true to them. The simplistic style – usually using three colors or less, and maxing out in size at 14” x 22” – is still created by arranging letter blocks and carving images into wood or rubber, then inking the press and rolling the poster paper through it. The result is a piece of art that somehow appears simultaneously contemporary and vintage. It’s an aesthetic that is unique and recognizable, almost a category all its own. When it came to creating the Nashville photo shoot set, including a wall of Hatch-style prints was a visual way to transport us to Music City, bringing a little Tennessee to Texas.

Set the Stage Creating a catalog has a lot of moving parts, phases, and challenges. One of those is setting the scene. Add to that the ramifications of a global pandemic: travel limitations, venue closures, budget restrictions. It was clear that we wouldn’t be going to Nashville, so we had to make Nashville come to us. Time to call in the pros. “When Cheryl and Audrey first called me, it was in the beginning of the shutdown,” recalled Carla Curry, professional set decorator extraordinaire and longtime friend of Double D Ranch. “They told me about the Nashville collection, and that they were now going to have to shoot this in their backyard of Seguin, Texas. This was right up my alley, as I am constantly creating environments that aren’t necessarily where they actually exist. And I’ve worked and experienced the Nashville scene!” Truly, who better to recreate Music City on a small-town stage than the set decorator for the award-winning country music classic, Walk the Line? “Walk the Line was an incredibly challenging project,” Carla admitted. “We managed to pull off 92 sets in 52 days, in 4 states! And they were period sets that spanned 5 decades. It was a tremendous amount of work. But obviously worth it. We produced a beautiful tribute to Johnny Cash that has become an iconic film.” Begging Carla to help us salvage the shoot was a no-brainer, and we were fortunate she was available to answer our SOS. Carla brought her genius – and some very cool props – to the set of the Nashville shoot.
“I had just cleaned out one of my containers at home and discovered a box (very ratty and weathered) of blank gold records, that for some reason I had tucked away for 15 years,” Carla said of the fortuitous find. “The albums inside were still in good shape, so one of the looks became a wall of gold records – very iconic Nashville!”

Gold Records & Grammys As a recording artist, there are certain milestones to strive for that signify the pinnacle of success. One is earning a gold record; one is winning a Grammy. We never had those aspirations. We never wanted to entertain or be on stage in front of thousands of people, in fact, we barely like being in a crowd and certainly don’t like being the center of attention. (Never mind that we didn’t have the pipes for it.) And yet, we somehow found ourselves at the Grammys anyway. In January of 2020, Cheryl and a few members of our talented crew anxiously and eagerly made their way to Los Angeles, loaded down with outfits and accessories, prepared to help dress the likes of Brandi Carlile, Jenee Fleenor, and the legendary Tanya Tucker for everything from pre-parties to performances. In a roundabout way, we were a part of country music history. After her critically acclaimed comeback album – her first original release in 17 years – Tanya accepted her first ever Grammy Awards decked out in Double D Ranch. But our moment in the spotlight, our pinnacle, was that evening when Brandi and Tanya performed “Bring My Flowers Now”, with Tanya donning a custom DDR suit, a dazzling beaded version of the Man in Black Suit we created for the Nashville collection, complete with names of her late parents embroidered on the sleeve. She sparkled on that stage. Seeing something we created on a stage of that magnitude was a dream we didn’t even know we had, but it was surreal, emotional, and it certainly felt like an achievement. We’ve come a long way since belting “Delta Dawn” from the backseat of Dad’s old car.

The Edge of Music City Around the time we were growing up, a shift was happening on the country music landscape. Romance was giving way to rebellion, and the classic crooners began to take a backseat to the bad boys. It was the era of an edgier, gritty sound, coming from the likes of legends like Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, and Jerry Lee Lewis. And the lesser known but equally as legendary First Lady of Rockabilly, Ms. Wanda Jackson. Influenced by her musical mentor (and one-time boyfriend) Elvis Presley, the Oklahoma native made waves in Music City in terms of both sound and style. She combined country and rock ‘n’ roll into a single album in a way that women really weren’t doing at the time, and she also bucked the traditional, conservative garb of her counterparts in favor of fringed dresses and high heels that really made her stand out on a stage. It’s been said she declared herself the first woman to bring glamour into country music, and we’re inclined to agree. We channeled that sass and sexiness into several pieces of the Nashville collection, but we specifically designed the flirty, fringed Rockabilly Wanda Dress as an ode to Ms. Jackson.

Two Tone Black and red is a color combination that reads like a country song. Passion and grief. Love and loss. Power and darkness. It’s stark, it’s bold, it’s every emotional contrast you’d expect in a ballad. When you think “power colors”, two shades typically come to mind: black and red. As pretty as they may be, no one is strutting down the street with the same swagger in aubergine or commanding that conference room with the same confidence in cerulean. Black and red innately evoke emotion, and we unconsciously associate them with fierceness and respect. They contrast, they conflict, and they complement oh so beautifully. And they’re edgy. Which is why they work so well for this collection. This isn’t your mama’s Nashville. As much as we love our Backwoods Barbies, it’s more Johnny Cash and Hank Williams and Wanda Jackson we’re channeling here. A little bit country, a little bit rock ‘n’ roll.

Wear It Like a Rock Star This year has really given a whole new meaning to “all dressed up with nowhere to go”. There’s nothing like a nationwide shutdown and months on end of working from home to make one aware how much their outfit impacts their attitude. But boy, oh boy, are we aware now. Sure, at first it felt exhilarating to not have to go to the office – like an adult snow day. We got to skip the commute and the entire getting ready process; we could even do our daily duties sans pants if we wanted. But after weeks of not having any reason to put ourselves together, we started to realize we were in a rut, a “funk”; all the days were running together, and we had forgotten how fierce we felt in an awesome outfit and a little red lipstick. So, we made a conscious decision: Get up. Dress up. Show up. And it’s made all the difference. It’s a lesson we learned from our beloved Wolf Pack. From doctor’s appointments to job interviews to court dates, we are consistently inspired by stories of how dressing up in DDR gives you the confidence you need to conquer whatever you’re up against. It’s the highest of compliments and the most rewarding part of what we do, and it’s caused us to look at our wardrobe in a whole new light. Your outfit is your armour, ladies. Let the world know you’re ready for battle.
