Vega una vida dedicada al espectáculo

Las paredes de la recepción de la oficina del productor Ender Vega Correa son un recorrido emocionante por algunos de los momentos clave de la cultura popular boricua. Las decoran imágenes de eventos que han roto récords de ventas en Puerto Rico, como los conciertos de Don Omar y Yandel.

Destacan además los afiches promocionales de los musicales In the Heights y Hamilton. Mientras, en la mesa de recepción, hay una copia de nuestra revista, abierta justo en la página en donde se anuncian las obras de la temporada Broadway 2023, en San Juan, con los artes de los musicales West Side Story y Hamilton.

Desde la recepción se escucha su voz fuerte, mientras él está al final del edificio conversando por teléfono con el cantante y artista puertorriqueño Éktor Rivera, quien interpretó a Usnavi en la puesta en escena local del musical In the Heights, del laureado Lin Manuel-Miranda.

Ender le comisionó a Éktor una pintura que tiene como protagonista a nuestra Rita Moreno, a quien se le dedicó la presentación en la isla este pasado febrero de la versión 100% local del musical West Side Story. Ya durante nuestra conversación, Ender no pudo aguantarse y agarró su laptop para mostrarnos, con orgullo, cómo iba quedando la pintura que se exhibirá de manera permanente en el Centro de Bellas Artes de Santurce, en honor a la puertorriqueña, una de las pocas artistas que ha ganado los cuatro principales premios de entretenimiento estadounidense: Óscar, Emmy, Grammy y Tony.

To look at the walls of the reception area in producer Ender Vega Correa's office is to take an exciting journey through some of the key moments in Puerto Rican popular culture. They boast images of events that have broken sales records in Puerto Rico, such as concerts headlined by Don Omar and Yandel.

They also feature promotional posters for the musicals In the Heights and Hamilton. Meanwhile, a copy of our magazine sits on the reception desk, open right on the page announcing the plays for the Broadway 2023 season in San Juan, along with the artwork for West Side Story and Hamilton.

From there, you can hear his booming voice as he stands at the other end of the building, chatting on the phone with Puerto Rican singer and artist Éktor Rivera, who played Usnavi in the local staging of the musical In the Heights, by award-winner Lin Manuel-Miranda.

Ender commissioned Éktor with a painting starring our very own Rita Moreno, to whom they dedicated the 100%-local production of West Side Story performed in the island last February. During our conversation, Ender could not resist grabbing his laptop to proudly show us how the painting was coming along. It will be permanently exhibited at the Centro de Bellas Artes in Santurce, in honor of the Puerto Rican actress, who is among the few who have won all four of the major U.S. entertainment awards: an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony.

La mente de Ender va a las millas. Confiesa que a veces se levanta de madrugada con alguna idea. Es perfeccionista y revisa los artes de los anuncios para que no se escape un error, porque si no, “no duerme”.

Junto a la también productora Soraya Sánchez, lideró por varios años el programa Objetivo Fama (bajo la sociedad de ES Televisión).

“Sin temor a equivocarme, Objetivo Fama ha sido el programa televisivo producido aquí que más rating e impacto ha tenido en la televisión de Puerto Rico. La historia lo ha dicho. Es el que más familias unió”, recuerda. Los deportes y la música, preludio a su faceta como productor

Su niñez fue divertida. Su mamá, Miss Correa, le dio clases desde cuarto hasta séptimo grado, en la escuela pública del barrio Maricao de Vega Alta, su pueblo natal.

“Pasé mucho tiempo en la playa de Cerro Gordo. A los trece o catorce años cogíamos dos o tres ‘pones’ para ir a surfear. A veces nos llevaban hasta Breñas y desde allí caminábamos a la playa. Hacíamos eso medio escondidos”, confiesa el propietario de Acisum Group y BAS Entertainment.

Además, iba en carro público hasta San Juan a tomar clases de música, junto a su amigo de intermedia y superior Ricky Laureano. Pero, pronto se dio cuenta de que lo de él no era tocar el bajo; quería ser empresario.

A los dieciséis años, se paseaba por las canchas de tenis del antiguo hotel Cerromar y era el partner de tenis de los turistas que no tenían con quién jugar. “Me colaba en el hotel y en el river pool”, dice sonreído. Más adelante, hizo sus pininos, ayudando en la venta de auspicios para eventos deportivos.

En escuela superior produjo su primer talent show. Este fue un duelo entre dos bandas: una dirigida por Ricky Laureano y otra capitaneada por Tito Auger. Después de ahí le dijo a Ricky: “Si lanzas tu banda, seré tu manager”.

“Rita saw how the piece was coming along and said, 'You have a green light'," Ender raves.

Over Two Decades as Producer

Ender's mind moves quickly. He confesses that he sometimes wakes up in the wee hours of the morning with an idea. He, as a perfectionist, pores over the publicity artwork to make sure there are no mistakes, because otherwise, “he won't be able to sleep.”

He spearheaded the show Objetivo Fama for several years, along with producer Soraya Sánchez, under a partnership as ES Televisión.

“I am convinced that Objetivo Fama has been the highestrated and most impactful television program produced here in Puerto Rico. History has said as much. It's the show that brought families together the most,” he recalls.

Sports and Music: A Prelude to His Career as a Producer

Ender had a fun childhood. His mother, Miss Correa, was his teacher from fourth through seventh grade at the public school in the Maricao neighborhood of Vega Alta, his hometown.

“I spent a lot of time at the beach in Cerro Gordo. When I was thirteen or fourteen, we would hitch two or three rides to go surfing. Sometimes they would take us all the way to Breñas, and we'd walk from there to the beach. We would kind of sneak off,” admits the owner of Acisum Group and BAS Entertainment.

He would also take the public bus to San Juan with Ricky Laureano, his friend from middle school and high school, to go take his music lessons. However, he soon realized that playing the bass was not for him; he wanted to be an entrepreneur.

At sixteen, he hung around the tennis courts of the old Cerromar Hotel and served as a tennis partner for tourists who had no one to play with. “I would hang around the hotel and the river pool,” he says with a smile. Later on, he took his first steps by helping to sell sponsorships for sporting events.

He produced his first talent show in high school. It was a duel between two bands, one led by Ricky Laureano, and the other, by Tito Auger. After that, he told Ricky, “If your band breaks out, I'll be your manager.”

El tiempo pasó, Ricky y Tito se unieron y crearon Fiel a la Vega. Un día, Tito le dijo que necesitaba que fuera el manager de la agrupación. “Cuando le dije a mi esposa (la diseñadora de interiores Eva Rosado), por poco se muere, porque era dejar mi trabajo en la agencia de publicidad De La Cruz por algo que no sabíamos cómo saldría”, confiesa. A pesar de las reservas, se “tiró” y todos aprendieron sobre la marcha.

El fenómeno de Hamilton

Antes del paso del huracán María en el 2017, Ender ya estaba en conversaciones con Lin-Manuel Miranda y su padre, el también vegalteño, Luis Miranda, para traer la obra a Puerto Rico.

“Lin-Manuel ya no estaba haciendo el papel protagónico en la gira, pero quería presentarse en Puerto Rico. Hubo esa conversación, pero en el medio… llegó María. Luis Miranda me llamó y me dijo: ‘Te tengo dos noticias: el plan continuará y queremos que seas el productor local. Pero nadie cobrará, todo se donará’. Se le pagó a los actores, pero no hubo ganancias. Lo recaudado (quince millones) se puso en un fondo (Fondo Flamboyán para las Artes)”, menciona Ender.

Recuerda además que se donó más de un millón para reparar el teatro de la Universidad de Puerto Rico en Río Piedras, tras el daño causado por María. La familia Miranda quería que la obra se presentara allí, pero a poco menos de un mes los planes cambiaron ante la posibilidad de protestas relacionadas a negociaciones del convenio colectivo entre la universidad y la Hermandad de Empleados Exentos No Docentes. Todo el escenario se movió al Centro de Bellas Artes de Santurce en tiempo récord. Finalmente, la obra se presentó allí del 8 al 27 de enero de 2019.

Más familia y teatro musical

“Trabajo fuerte, pro hay trabajos que decido no hacer para no comprometer ese tiempo de calidad con mi familia. Lo mío no es hacer grandes fortunas. Quizás otros no conocen a sus hijos, pero nosotros somos superfamiliares y los asuntos espirituales tienen un lugar bien importante”, asevera este vecino de Dorado, desde hace más de veinte años y cuyos hijos (Bianca, de veinticuatro; Alexia, de diecinueve, y Sergio de dieciséis) se criaron en el pueblo costero.

Ender está enfocado en traer a la isla más producciones de Broadway, proyectos que toman año y medio o más en solo darles forma. “La primera puesta en escena de Hamilton demostró que en el país existe interés para teatro musical de este calibre”, dice.

El musical Hamilton se presentará nuevamente en el Centro de Bellas Artes en Santurce desde el 13 de junio, y Ender revalida como su productor local. Mientras tanto, está en conversaciones para traer en los próximos años otras producciones de teatro musical de calibre mundial. Stay tuned!

After some time, Ricky and Tito joined forces and founded Fiel a la Vega. One day, Tito told him that he needed him to be the group's manager. “When I told my wife (interior designer Eva Rosado), she almost died, because it meant leaving my job at the De La Cruz advertising agency for something completely uncertain,” he tells. Despite their reservations, he “took the plunge,” and everyone learned along the way.

The Hamilton Phenomenon

Before Hurricane Maria hit in 2017, Ender was already in talks with Lin-Manuel Miranda and his father Luis Miranda, who is also a Vega Alta native, about bringing the play to Puerto Rico.

“Lin-Manuel was no longer playing the lead role in the tour, but he wanted to perform in Puerto Rico. That conversation took place, but in the midst of it... Maria hit us. Luis Miranda called me and said: ‘I have two pieces of news for you: the plan will continue, and we want you to be the local producer. But no one will get paid; everything will be donated.’ The actors were paid, but there were no profits. The proceeds ($15 million) went to a fund (Flamboyan Arts Fund),” Ender explains.

He also recalls that more than $1 million was donated to repair the theater at the University of Puerto Rico in Río Piedras following the damage caused by Maria. The Miranda family wanted the play to be performed there, but with a little less than a month to go, plans changed in light of possible protests related to negotiations for the collective bargaining agreement between the university and the Brotherhood of Non-Academic Exempt Employees. The entire stage was moved in record time to Centro de Bellas Artes in Santurce. Ultimately, the musical was performed there from January 8 – 27, 2019.

More Family and Musical Theater

“I work hard, but there are jobs I turn down so as not to compromise the quality time I spend with my family. My thing isn't making a big fortune. Others might not know their children, but we are incredibly family-oriented, and spiritual matters are especially important,” explains the Dorado resident, who has lived over 20 years in this coastal town, where his children (Bianca, 24; Alexia, 19; and Sergio, 16) grew up.

Ender is focused on bringing more Broadway productions to the island, though these projects can take a year and a half or more just to start taking shape. “The first showing of Hamilton proved that the people in this country are interested in musical theater of this magnitude,” he says.

The Hamilton musical will be presented again at Centro de Bellas Artes in Santurce starting on June 13, with Ender, once again, as its local producer. Meanwhile, he is in talks to bring other world-class musical theater productions in the following years. Stay tuned!
