I

remember wishing we didn’t have to drive across two entire states for a vacation, that tween listlessness. But Mom worked in Ephraim one summer in the ‘70s – the greatest summer of her life, she said – then my grandparents became obsessed with the place and they wanted to share it with my sisters and me. So off we went, from northwest Minnesota to northeast Wisconsin.

Then I remember the great expanse of water, so much horizon, taking off my jelly sandals to wade in the icy, rolling waves. I remember outdoor dining for the first time and Grandpa stressed about bees. I remember Grandma buying her geraniums, because Door County’s air was “fresher,” in her opinion, so made for healthier, fuller flowers. And I remember bonfires lighting, glowing and dancing across Eagle Harbor. I remember feeling awed and intrigued – fear ball, something about burning a witch. I remember realizing Wisconsin could be pretty magical.

I didn’t realize I’d one day make a life here, and that Fyr Bal would become a marker of that life.

I remember another Fyr Bal, sneaking from behind the Wilson’s counter – my forearms sticky with ice cream, red shirt plastered to my sweaty back – with a crew of fellow servers to watch the bonfires lit, the fireworks explode. I remember another Fyr Bal, a stack of books from the library sale at my side while I dangled my legs off the edge of a dock and my boyfriend pressed the shutter over and over on his new Nikon as large flames dotted the

shoreline. And at another Fyr Bal, I remember taking our daughter to meet Elsa, watching the dog parade and Scandinavian dancers, and enjoying a trolley ride to our parked car.

Highlighting the history and traditions of that very same festival as a guest editor of Door County Living, I’m now realizing, with great humility, how much an annual event means to so many people who’ve lived and are living their own Door County story.

And there are so many stories, beyond Fyr Bal and my own Door County bubble of experience. It’s a joy to seek out and share a few of them in these pages, from Walloon language-learning in a Brussels restaurant to intricate guitar-making in a Sturgeon Bay workshop, from playwriting in a Fish Creek theater company to caretaking a historic Ephraim home. We highlight the wide range of publications Door County authors have released in the last year, fascinating items from the earliest days of the Door County Historical Museum, and the wading birds who make these swamps and shoreline home, plus so much more.

Historical Museum’s Misfit Artifacts

A

mid the recreated storefronts in the basement of the Door County Historical Museum – a barber shop, a dime store, a doctor’s office – is an exhibit as out-of-place as its contents: The Curiosity Shop.

The cabinet is kept as a tribute to the early years of the museum. It’s chock-full of oddities, including stuffed armadillos, a Canadian coin inscribed with the Lord’s Prayer, mammoth ivory, melted silverware and a wooden chain.

“When the museum opened in 1939, the whole place looked like this,” said Steven Rice, the former museum manager who recently relocated to Madison.“It was a portal to other experiences, places, times. You would see things you wouldn’t see in your day-to-day life.”

The museum was the brainchild of Harry Dankoler, a retired newspaper man, amateur photographer and “passionate collector of pretty much everything,” Rice said. Originally, the museum showcased many items from Dankoler’s own collection. With the help of the Door County Historical Society, he called on prominent, eccentric friends to fill the museum.

“They were soliciting and basically sent out letters to friends and family across the country, saying, ‘We’re opening a museum. Do you have anything weird?’” Rice said.

Now, 85 years later, after many renovations and upgrades, the Curiosity Shop remains a landing place for objects that don’t fit in specific exhibits but are too fascinating to hide away.

“Some things are just so weird,” Rice said, laughing. “We can’t really put them anywhere else.”

In 1893, Chicago hosted the World’s Columbia Exposition, also known as the World’s Fair.

Highlights include:

“There was a very strong Door County presence at the fair,” Rice said. “Our Door County fruit was exhibited there and was very popular. This was the beginnings of the Door County fruit industry getting national attention.”

“Meteorites” “Meteors are incredibly valuable and in high demand, so we were wondering if we could finance a museum expansion with one of these bad boys – but we couldn’t,” Rice said. “We’ve done some testing and verified that they are not, in fact, meteorites.”

Rice credits a space craze in the first half of the 20th century for the dozen-or-so ordinary rocks that found their way into the museum.

Many Door County residents attended the fair and brought back these souvenir clocks.

“It’s homely and incredibly heavy,” said Rice of the jug.

“But that’s part of the charm – it’s a memory exercise.”

Door County local Emma Templeton created a putty jug with bits and pieces significant to her: a button from the Grand Army of the Republic in which her father served, a cuff button from a prison where her brother was held, her childhood scissors, coins, shells and trinkets, and most random of all, “a gold earring from a Norwegian,” according to the placard.

In 1922, an employee of the Peterson and Hoslett Store in Sturgeon Bay was unpacking fruit when a giant tarantula crept from the produce and bit her.

Around the turn of the 20th century, a trend of covering jugs with putty and sticking keepsakes onto them swept through the country. Based on an African-American folk-art tradition, the practice was “adapted by white Americans after the Civil War,” Rice said.

“There was a time before the 1900s when astronomical science was not something everyone knew,” he said.

“Then people started to become aware of astronomical things. Any weird rock that you found on your farm when you were digging around was a meteor. If you couldn’t explain where it came from and had a certain look to it – like, black and oblong and looked like it might have fallen from the sky – then it was a meteor.”

“She had to go to the hospital,” Rice said.

“More panic than anything.

Tarantula bites aren’t that poisonous, but painful and terrifying. I’m sure anyone working in produce at the local grocery stores may have had this experience.

Several species of tropical spiders will occasionally hitch a ride up here.”

Someone decided to pickle the offending spider in a food jar and donate it to the museum.

The practice of receiving donations from the public hasn’t disappeared since then.

“We take in donations almost daily,” said Rice.

“Everything we have in here was given to us by the community for 85 years running. So, we are a reflection of our community. These are the things that actual Door County people thought were important in their history, in their lives.”

The Mystique of the Mystic Deconstructing Marc Anderson’s moody Cave Point painting

I

was first attracted to “Into the Mystic,” an oil painting by Door County resident and plein-air painter Marc Anderson, because of its unique perspective. How often does one see a painting of Cave Point partially obscured by fog?

The scene shows a pair of cedars diffused by fog that grows denser with height, its base highlighted by flame-yellow grasses. The lake water mixes shades of brown and green with

occasional hints of blue, breaking into frothy whites as waves hit the rocks and retreat.

Anderson’s waves are short and choppy – you can’t tell if they’re coming or going in the painting, nor can you while standing on the ledges of the real Cave Point.

The colors of the rocky ledge in the foreground range from a smudgy brownish-gray to a near-white, plunging back to black where the rock overhangs the lake that is vigorously undermining the shoreline. Under attack by the relentless waves, some of this rock is likely to drop into the water within the next decades or centuries.

The style of the painting can be loosely called expressionist, a term that can be used to describe almost everything between photorealism and abstraction. It is far from the detailed representational work which used to dominate Door County paintings of traditional scenes like lighthouses, bluffs along Green Bay, sailboats and sunrises.

Light plays a central role in Anderson’s paintings.

“Whether it’s an overcast day or sunny day, you can always find something interesting happening with the light – how it’s hitting forms, whether it’s a boat, or a rock, or water, creating a wide variety of colors,” Anderson said in an interview for a 2024 Peninsula Pulse profile. “I find it’s capturing

I’ve heard Door County artists talk of trying to capture the feel of a scene, rather than just producing an accurate representation of it.

Anderson’s painting makes me feel the cool, moist air of a foggy day, not exactly chilly, but generating an occasional shiver. The waves can be mesmerizing, making an observer wonder: how many hundreds, or thousands, of years have they been making their way to these rocky shores without getting tired or bored? How do these cedars hold onto their rocky perches, sending their roots into crevices and maintaining their grip up and down the peninsula?

ust by running his fingers over a piece of wood, luthier Fritz Damler can tell whether it can be turned into a guitar.

“Every builder has his own techniques for doing things,” Damler said. “But a lot of it has to do with the time in the saddle, and you get a feel for what a wood is going to do.”

With more than 50 years of experience, Damler has had plenty of time in the saddle. He started his guitar-making business in 1972, and still makes one-of-a-kind instruments out of his home workshop in Sturgeon Bay. Damler’s guitars are custom to the last inch. He starts every project by meeting the musician commissioning the instrument, and he incorporates information about the player’s style and preferences into the final design.

If someone is a jazz musician, he may build in a cutaway for easier access to higher frets. He’ll adjust the width of the fingerboard to match a classical musician’s playing style. He even has the client, if available, come into his shop when he carves the neck so it perfectly fits to their hand.

“There’s no compromise,” Damler said. “When I build an instrument for somebody, they get everything they want.”

Wood selection is another part of Damler’s design process. Different types of wood have different densities, which affect the sound of the guitar, as does the thickness of the wood.

For the sides of a flamenco guitar that Damler regularly plays, he chose a thin rosewood, which is half the thickness of what would be used on a classical guitar. This thin wood creates better note separation, which works well for the fast-paced style of flamenco. Thicker rosewood works better for classic styles, as it facilitates rich bass overtones.

Damler’s attention to detail extends to the aesthetics of the guitars as well. The craftsman can inlay names on the fingerboard, create intricate designs around the rosette and incorporate unique materials like abalone or mother of pearl.

He says the sky’s the limit when it comes to customization – and that attitude shows in some of his more unique designs. One guitar he made, dubbed “Papa Bear,” features small ivory bears along an ebony fingerboard, plus moons and stars around the rosette. The instrument’s name and design came from the nickname of the musician who commissioned it. This guitar came out of Damler’s studio on Washington Island, his first location in Door County.

Damler married into the peninsula.

His wife, Mari, already owned a fixerupper on Washington Island when the two met. At the time, the two were living in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where Damler resided for 30 years.

He first learned his craft while studying guitar at the University of Mexico, getting his start from a book, Classical Guitar Construction by Irving Sloane. This was one of the only available resources on the craft at the time, Damler said.

In order to observe guitar-making techniques, Damler would frequent Pimentel and Sons Guitar Makers Inc., a guitar-building family business in New Mexico. They sold Damler his first tools and bits of wood, and soon, he was putting together his first guitar.

“It didn’t turn out very nice, and that’s why I had to build the second one,” he said.

In the 10 years after he first started his guitar business, Damler estimates that he built several hundred instruments. At that point, he decided

to sell the business to his apprentice and spend the next decade sailing the world.

Shortly after returning from this adventure, Damler once again began crafting guitars, and he and his wife made the move to Washington Island in 1998. A few years back, the pair moved from Washington Island to Sturgeon Bay, largely to be closer to a new grandchild.

About 12 years ago, Damler decided to stop building lines of guitars and instead focus on making one-off, unique instruments. He sees each guitar as special, like a work of art.

Hearing the music come from an instrument for the first time is the most rewarding part of the build, Damler said.

“That day you string it up, it’s like ‘wow,’” he said. “You’re bringing this other entity into the world.”

He currently makes one or two guitars a year, spending a couple months on each piece. He also does repairs.

Damler’s guitars come with a satisfaction guarantee, and clients are under no obligation to purchase the custom instrument once complete. The only exception would be in the case of design details that make the guitar unique to a client, like a name inlay.

“If somebody says they don’t like it, they don’t have to buy it, and I’ve never had that happen,” Damler said.

Each guitar gets a name from Damler before he hands it off to its new owner.

“The guitar, the name of the guitar, makes itself known to me by the time I finish it,” he said. “And that’s the way it goes.”

Lachrisa Grandberry flourishes at Northern Sky

S

ince Lachrisa Grandberry’s first performance as Oprah Winfrey for a sixth-grade Living Museum project, stepping in front of the spotlight has held little fear for her. While others maintain rituals or deep-breathing exercises to work through stage fright, Grandberry acts with calm and confidence, performing in everything from As You Like It to Nunsense to the TV show Chicago PD. That was until the opening of Sunflowered, the first musical she cowrote for Northern Sky Theater.

“I felt so nauseous and sick,” she said, laughing. “I was like, ‘Why did I do this? Why didn’t anybody stop me?

Who thought this was a good idea?’ In the [writing] process, you’re safe. It’s just you, and then a few other people who are in support of what you’re creating, and creating with you. It’s very vulnerable to then give it to the world and they can take it any way they please.”

Despite these nerves, Grandberry still shared the story she never intended to write of a young woman facing a lifechanging decision,

gathering her inner circle for a Door County camping trip.

“It was a poem that inspired Sunflowered,” and a nudge from her friend and fellow Northern Sky company member, Molly Rhode, Grandberry said.

“I was sitting on [Rhode’s] porch and wrote a poem called ‘Laughter,’ and she was like, ‘You should write a musical for us.’ And I was like, ‘I don’t do that. I don’t write musicals.’”

But with the help of Aidaa Peerzada and Alissa Rhode, she did just that. Throughout the process, she was supported by Northern Sky’s directors, designers, managers and musicians.

“Northern Sky is good at guiding the next generation of storytellers,” Grandberry said. “They are good at saying, ‘Yeah, here’s your torch. Go ahead. You can do this.’ It’s unknown in the theater industry that a company only produces new works.”

Grandberry’s Journey to the Stage Grandberry wasn’t immersed in the arts as a child.

“I wasn’t exposed regularly,” she said. But during a Big Brothers Big Sisters program in middle school, she memorized and recited poetry with her fellow participants, including “If”

“I loved what the language did to me, so I started writing poetry for myself, about feelings and experiences, words I needed to release or find,” Grandberry said.

That love of language drew her to the theater. She received her bachelor’s degree in theater at Luther College in Milwaukee and while babysitting, had a serendipitous meeting with

Molly Rhode, who invited her to audition for Northern Sky’s 2018 production of Dairy Heirs.

“I was hesitant,” Grandberry said. “I’d never been to Door County. It seemed far. It’s a whole lot of white people.

That was a scary thing on different levels – removing yourself from the community.”

But she enjoyed her first performance at Northern Sky, and the theater kept offering her roles and the opportunity to create. The community embraced her as well, offering her opportunities to teach at organizations like Write On, Door County and speak at events

such as the annual Women’s Fund Luncheon.

“I keep coming back,” Grandberry said. “I love the people. I love the work. I love the community. I have so much gratitude for Door County and what it has given me and what I have been able to give back in return; and while yes, Door County has its challenges, lack of diversity, here, parts of me have flourished that might not have elsewhere. Here, I’m an actor, writer, public speaker. Door County’s the only place I’ve been all three of these things at the same time, in different venues, in different ways.”

Following the successful run of Sunflowered, Molly Rhode encouraged Grandberry to write another musical, this time a female version of Northern Sky’s popular comedy Guys On Ice. Grandberry insisted Rhode co-author the play.

“I call [Rhode] a writer doula,” Grandberry said. “She nurtures the process for a lot of the writers here.

That’s what she was for Sunflowered.

She’s not listed as a playwright, but she was holding our hands through that entire process. I said, ‘It’s about time you have your name listed as an author.’”

So the pair brainstormed an outline.

Grandberry wrote the first draft of dialogue and lyrics for Girls on Sand before bringing Rhode on to help edit, rework and finesse the play about two friends facing personal dilemmas while trying to enjoy a Door County beach day.

Grandberry admitted the task of writing a musical wasn’t any easier the second time around.

“It might have been harder, actually,” she said. “Girls on Sand, being inspired by another piece here, felt like it has to live up to a different caliber. And writing comedy is not an easy task.”

Her approach was to write a humorous story that incorporates real-life pain and struggle.

“It can be fun and it can [be] funny, but it will be real, because nothing about life is always just peachy,” Grandberry said. “Even if it is a really good day, chances are you’ll go home with a bunch of mosquito bites.”

Grandberry is now mentoring storytellers herself, serving as program director of Northern Sky’s NOVA (Nurturing Original Voices and Artists) Initiative.

“It’s Northern Sky’s incubator for next-generation writers,” she said.

“It’s what Northern Sky has always done, but with more intention.”

Through six-week sessions, Grandberry creates a safe space for writers of all levels to find their voices, facilitating writing circles, guiding exercises and offering peer reflections. The process doesn’t always result in a Northern Sky play.

“If a writer has an idea and realizes it’s not for Northern Sky, that’s okay,” she said. “That’s the beauty.”

When the weather cools, Grandberry returns to Milwaukee or Chicago, wherever the work is. But she always looks forward to her Door County return.

“Milwaukee is home, I’ve done great things in Milwaukee; Chicago is now home too and I’ve done some great things in Chicago,” she said.

“But Door County – the way the community has embraced me and the way I’ve embraced this community – has allowed me to be the best version of myself.”

T

welve-year-old Connor Dix was among the first few dozen people to finish the 100-mile ride of the 2024 Peninsula Century Spring Classic cycling event last June in Baileys Harbor.

The only feat more impressive was his performance at the rest stop food tables.

“I had 36 orange slices,” said Dix, who planned to ride again this year in the 37th annual Spring Classic on June 14.

Every year since 2015, Dix and his father, Aaron, have driven up from Baraboo to participate in the Spring Classic and Fall Challenge rides.

“We’ve got to kind of pace him at the rest stops, otherwise he’d eat too much,” Aaron Dix said of his son.

“The food was excellent. It always is.”

Many riders praised the refreshments first and foremost, even more than the scenic back-road routes from Gills Rock to Sturgeon Bay. Organizers set up seven rest stop areas along 25-, 50-, 62- and 100mile routes, with food provided by Al Johnson’s, Door County Creamery, Piggly Wiggly, Wood Orchard Market and Kick Ash.

Offerings included sandwiches with lunchmeat, veggies or peanut butter and jelly, as well as bagels with peanut butter or cream cheese, roasted potatoes, peanut butter pretzels, hard boiled eggs, cookies, Chex Mix, Nature Valley bars, granola, chips, pickles, bananas, Gatorade and pickle juice.

Zion United Methodist Church hosted one rest stop on County Road F. A rider left the gravel parking lot around 11 am while yelling toward his wife, who pedaled in front of him: “Those goat cheese curds were awesome!”

A few minutes later, a woman left the same lot and yelled backward, “Let’s sign up for the Fall [Classic]!”

“Immediately!” her friend shouted back.

More food awaited those riders near the finish line behind the Baileys Harbor Library. Thyme Restaurant catered the post-ride meal, Seaquist Orchards supplied cherry crisp for dessert and One Barrel Brewing offered a selection of beers.

“The cherry crisp – that’s like the best reward of the whole ride,” ,” Aaron Dix said.

Tom Witt and Consolato Gattuso disagreed after they finished the 100-mile ride, both at age 74.

“We came for the free beer,” Gattuso said.

“We’ve got enough energy left to drink beer, but that’s about it,” Witt said.

Tykes on Bikes Ten-month-old Charlie Byers beat his 34-year-old father across the finish line of the 2024 Spring Classic.

Granted, he did so while crying in a child seat fastened just below the handlebars of Sean Byers’ bike, but in that position, he was ahead of his dad the entire 25-mile ride.

“Sir Charles in his chariot,” Byers said.

Erin Byers, his wife, did the 62-mile route. She went 100 miles in four previous years before missing the 2023 Spring Classic while six months pregnant. Her husband provided babysitting in exchange for fewer miles. The gig included stopping to feed his son during the ride.

“Then he wailed because he was tired,” Sean Byers said. “But then he fell asleep and it was great. Everyone Early Summer 2025

was so supportive. A lot of people were pulling over and saying ‘good job’ and ‘how’s the baby?’”

The Byers, from Muskego, rode with friends from Milwaukee; Bryan Wendt, 37, did the 100-mile ride while his wife Noel Wendt, 34, pedaled 25 miles with 13-month-old Archer in a baby seat behind her.

Nearby, four-month-old Hatcher Jamar didn’t ride with his father, T.R., 37, but his mother, Hailey, 36, drove him to various rest stops so they could support his dad. A family of traveling physical therapists, the Jamars worked in Door County on a 13-week contract while living in the Beantown Campground before heading out to Washington state for their next short contract.

“It’s a fun way of living,” Hailey Jamar said.

After spending time in their home state of Arkansas for their daughter’s birth, the Jamars traveled to Wisconsin.

“Door County is actually a pretty good vibe to bring her to,” T.R. Jamar said. “It’s a good place. It’s been fun.”

At the Spring Classic, he completed the 50-mile route while the father-son duo of Aaron and Connor Dix went 100 miles. Since learning to ride at age three, Connor Dix has finished six 100-mile rides.

A Historic New Home

After 35 years in Baileys Harbor, the Spring Classic ride will have a new home in 2025. The ride moves to the grounds of Horseshoe Bay Farms in Egg Harbor, where riders will start and finish amongst the iconic barns of the farm that was once one of the largest and most innovative in Wisconsin.

He did it last year wearing a white jersey with red polka dots, pedaling on a black Trek bike. His family has frequented Door County since his parents went on their honeymoon there, and his father hopes to retire in the area.

The move has riders excited to ride, as the capped ride was already 80% full as this magazine hit the press. The ride will still feature four different routes, rest stops with local snacks and featured items, and a post-ride lunch from Thyme and beer from One Barrel Brewing Co.

“We love it up here,” Connor Dix said.

“They say a tandem either makes or breaks a marriage,” Donna Jakobsze said. “He bought the tandem to make me ride. But if I ever go down [and fall off] I’m never getting back on, so he’s got that added pressure.”

The Jakobszes drove up from Palatine, Illinois to ride in their ninth Spring Classic, joining a large contingent of cyclists from Chicago’s northern suburbs. For example, a group of seven riders from the Evanston Bicycle Club, ranging in age from 63-74, split their rides between the 100- and 62-mile routes.

“It’s always wonderful,” Melissa Gattuso said. “Everybody’s really nice and friendly and helpful. The roads are so well maintained, and you only run into a few cars in 100 miles.”

“Not literally!” her friend Jenny Hager joked.

They were among more than 700 riders who participated in the Spring Classic last year.

f Shakespeare’s Juliet were to roam the modern-day marinas of Door County, admiring all the beautiful boats, she might still ask: “What’s in a name?”

The names of the boats in these marinas are as varied as the vessels themselves. Here then, Julie, are just a few examples.

Docked in Egg Harbor is a 54-foot beauty belonging to Dale Hanke. A number of names were tossed around while the boat was being built, the last being Midnight Reflection. The idea for the name appeared as the boat came out of the paint shop.

A boat’s name can say something about its owner, as is the case with Pharm-A-Sea and Chris Konop.

“The hull was painted black and the way in which the boat was positioned and the bright sun shining on the side, it was like a mirror,” Hanke said. “You could see all the boats next to our boat as clearly as if you were looking directly at them.”

Many an angler who has landed a trophy salmon or trout on Lake Michigan started their adventure in Sturgeon Bay aboard Konop’s charter, a 38-foot Egg Harbor built in Egg Harbor City, New Jersey. Konop – as you may have guessed – is also a licensed pharmacist.

“I was trying to figure out what the name of my charter business was

going to be,” he said. Konop and his wife, Amy, jotted down a few ideas. A friend of theirs with a background in sales and marketing said that Pharm-A-Sea was the only one which meant anything. Turns out Amy may have dreamed up the winner.

But it wasn’t necessarily Konop’s favorite.

“I thought it would be nice to be out on the water fishing and not talking about me being a pharmacist,” he said of the careerconnecting moniker. “It turned out to be a good idea.”

When it came time to name the boat, Breliant thought back to his wife’s original uncertainty about the purchase, and recalled a Monty Python bit from the 1970s.

“They did a skit with Queen Elizabeth and somebody was sitting there telling her a dirty joke,” Breliant said. “In her British accent the Queen said, ‘We are not amused.’

So, it kinda stuck.”

When a boat changes ownership, its name may remain or change.

John and Mary Morgan of Rolling Meadows, Illinois, purchased a previously owned 35-foot Mainship, and kept the name, Passport.

“Some people believe it’s bad luck to change the name of the boat,” John Morgan said.

Checking Morgan’s claim on Google finds that changing the name without the approval of sea gods Poseidon (Greek) or Neptune (Roman), can be a bad move. According to folklore, the ancient ones keep ledgers of every ship that has ever sailed the Seven Seas. Fortunately, a small sacrifice of champagne – or in Wisconsin waters a brandy oldfashioned sweet – will keep the big fellas happy.

Not every boat has to be named, per Petty Officer Bell. In fact, there is a boat docked in Fish Creek that Breliant claims is a bit noteworthy for being unnamed.

Ephraim’s famed festival welcomes the summer season with Scandinavian flair

I

n 1964, a group of Ephraimites gathered at the Village Green Motel to hear a proposal from Tom and Mally Mayhew: a festival to celebrate Midsummer’s Eve and Ephraim’s Scandinavian heritage, as well as to draw visitors and promote businesses.

The group brainstormed, deciding on traditions and entertainment, inspired by ancient celebrations. There would be a celebrated Chieftain, someone who had gone above and beyond to contribute to Ephraim in one way or another; dancers in traditional garb; and bonfires, of course, to burn away the presence of the winter witch. They decided to call it Fyr Bal, the Norwegian word for bonfire, pronounced fear ball.

Ruth and Ranny Nelson, who owned South Shore Pier, volunteered to escort the Chieftain across Eagle Harbor by boat. Leon Statham of Statham Enamels made the first medallion, which is gifted to the Chieftain. Joyce Gerdman and Dorothy Halvorson taught local girls Norwegian songs and dances. Charles “Chick” Peterson designed the festival banners, which were sewn

by Diane Jacobson and hung throughout the village. There was a barbershop quartet, paddle races and a “hootenanny” dance. The Moravian church hosted a bake sale, the fire department a brat fry and the village hall a fish boil.

Many of these traditions have remained over the past 59 years, and local businesses have added new ones – an ice cream-eating contest at Wilson’s Restaurant and Ice Cream Parlor, a pet parade at Edgewater Resort, a regatta at the Ephraim Yacht Club, a book sale at the Ephraim Library, and a gathering at South Shore Pier where participants paddle around dressed as witches to scare away the winter witch.

There’s always music and food, of course, as well as artisans, children’s activities, and the grand finale of the event: the epic bonfires lit around Eagle Harbor as dusk falls, capped off with fireworks.

The honor of lighting the first fire goes to the Chieftain, still escorted across the harbor by boat, bearing a medallion created by a different Ephriam-based artist every year.

It’s a festival packed with heartfelt meaning and ancient heritage from a small community honoring its own while opening its arms to others.

In recognition of Ephraim’s 60th Fyr Bal celebration on June 21, we wanted to share images and ephemera from the famed festival’s past and present.

Between the Ephraim Historical Foundation and our own archives, there was no shortage of scenes and items that showcased the feel of an event that has become beloved by locals and visitors alike.

back in our car and John said to me, ‘Oh, what a waste of time.’ And I said, ‘Really? You didn’t like it?’”

uring an era when many oneof-a-kind homes and buildings were being torn down to make way for new construction along Door County shorelines, Wendy Tinnon poured her energy and resources into rescuing and enhancing a classic cottage.

D

She brought up to her husband everything about the house she loved, rather than the problems it had after decades of deferred maintenance as a seasonal rental. She considered the restoration of the house “a wonderful challenge.” Some buyers would have torn it down, but that thought never crossed her mind.

Tinnon and her husband, John, who died in 2020, were seeking a seasonal home on the shoreline in 1988 when they toured a three-story stone home in Ephraim. Built in 1927, the house made a much different first impression on Wendy than it did on John.

Though the house appeared to be in rough condition, the inspector who checked on the place before the Tinnons bought it said it was constructed well enough to stand for another hundred years.

“When we looked at the house the first time, there was a bat on the wall and the house smelled bad, like an old ship with lots of mold,” Wendy said. “We got

“It was not a house that’s going to crumble,” Wendy said. “It had great bones.”

A chimney and fireplace expert told the couple that the lone, central chimney for the home was constructed so well that it needed no cleaning or repair, functioning perfectly for the three fireplaces linked to it.

Wendy and John both grew to love the home, especially the design work and unusual touches by its architect, William Bernhard, an Ephraim resident and student of Frank Lloyd Wright.

“Its artistry and attention to handcrafted detail really struck us,” she said. “It’s a solid-stone home. It looks like something you’d find in England.”

Some of the building’s unique features include local beach-stone fireplaces, stone floors in the foyer and dining room, and an exposed stone wall in the mudroom. Other touches include

a one-of-a-kind handcrafted railing, unusual sconces, a turret where an early 20th-century cook and nanny resided, three-inch-thick wooden doors, and intricate metalwork on fireplace screens and light-switch plates that portray a twin pines motif as well as an inkwell in honor of an owner who was a writer. Plus, Wendy said, “the ceilings are really high in the living room and there are beams in there in the ceiling that were hand-hewn on the property.”

The Tinnons spent years investing in improvements to their Ephraim home.

They enhanced many of the original designs within the house and got help from some creative local craftspeople, including stonework and tuckpointing assistance from fourth-generation Door County mason Mike Anderson. In addition to stonework for the house, Anderson dug to unearth walkways that had become buried over the years.

Both Meissner Landscaping and Bridenhagen Landscaping created and nurtured gardens, walls and other features on the cedar-shaded property. Nowadays, local property manager Carol Ama drops in as the creative caretaker and collaborator around Wendy’s seasonal home.

Tinnon credited the late Kenan Bunda for the woodworking expertise and creative ideas that

Not all old buildings need preservation, but this home and many historic, unusual, well-built or significant homes countywide certainly deserve looking after, Wendy said.

For the most part, the work of architect William Bernhard has been preserved well in Door County, especially in Ephraim. His designs include Ephraim’s village hall and the New Deal-funded, 1935 stone-walled fire station that was constructed into the bluff and now serves as a firefighting museum and memorial to fallen firefighters, according to Ephraim Historical Foundation and Peninsula Pulse archives.

While some people find it easier to tear down old houses and build new ones, there still are craftsmen and contractors willing to take on major and minor renovation work, Wendy said.

“I feel like I am a steward,” Wendy said. “John and I liked the challenge of that and we’re proud that we found something that had some history and meaning and we could keep it going.”

russels Hill, the highest elevation in Door County, is both literally and figuratively the economic and social demarcation between the vestiges of 19th-century culture and dominance of 21st-century commerce.

The teardrop-shaped landmass sweeps gently northward, topping off at 853 feet above sea level.

Unincorporated towns dot its perimeter like the finely tatted fringes of a vintage linen doily – with the town of Brussels at its radial point. To the west and north, hamlets are hemmed in by bay waters; to the east and south, they are widely scattered among the alluvial wash. All lie within the townships of Brussels, Union, and Gardner, or BUG, for short.

In the interest of their heritage, language and traditions, the people of this predominantly agricultural enclave of Belgian lineage prefer to remain insulated from many of the influences and trappings that lie beyond its boundaries. Outside a few notable exceptions, they choose not to engage in commercial endeavors exploiting the tourist dollars that generate myriad taxes that are redistributed directly back into the community. This is family farm country – modest dairy and cash crops, mostly.

This area of Southern Door steadfastly keeps a convivial arm’s length from their neighbors to the north. There are people within this tight-knit quarter who share no allegiance with the rest of the county. Some have never traveled beyond the Bay View Bridge into upper Door – pragmatically stating, “that’s for tourists,” and citing access to anything they need 30 minutes south in and around the city of Green Bay. Visitors to the peninsula frequently pass through BUG in excess of the

70-MPH speed limit on the divided four-lane highway. As though wearing blinders, they are unaware or uninterested in its authentic charm in favor of the popular attractions northern Door has to offer. This broad, unspoiled region is palpably different than across the bridge to the north, and full of surprises with a unique culture, rewarding – and often overlooked – photography opportunities, and a rare, living history where dozens of votive chapels carved into the woods and meadows

The entirety of these townships was obliterated by the Great Fire of 1871 (often referred to as the Peshtigo fire, the location of its presumed source across the bay). Most hamlets were rebuilt. Others, like Williamsonville, were not; it is now noted only with a small monument in a wayside park east of Tornado Road – the site where the town once stood.

The reference to “tornado” is not in the traditional sense, but that of a swirling tempest of flames fanned by the heat of the inferno’s own self-generating winds and fueled by the years’ exceptionally dry tinder of endlessly dense forest.

Within minutes, this firestorm swallowed the whole of the town in an exploding fireball, cremating three-quarters of the population as it stampeded across the landscape on that fateful October day – stopped only by the waters of the bay. The site also contains the remnants of a limestone walkway and a well, where seven men sought refuge from the conflagration and where only five of them lived long enough to tell the harrowing tale.

The surviving landowners dotting the neighboring communities rebuilt their lives and livelihoods after the fire. They replaced their charred wooden dwellings with sturdy twostory gabled farm houses of locallymade brick, recognizable by its faded tangerine color derived from the area’s hematite-rich clay. They are a distinct addition to the landscape often adorned with intricate brick inlay, stone window frames or a small, decorative attic window near the peak. Some show evidence of where the cattle barn was attached directly to the main house. The most identifiable of these structures are those still protected by their original zinc roofs – now white with age. These details embody the influence of traditional rural Belgian architecture.

Restaurant, where locals come for the food and fellowship and to catch up on the latest whatnot – taking little notice of the occasional outsider, or the peckish tourist. Middays on Thursday and Friday, the old-timers gather around dining tables and sit for hours passionately playing a fast trick-taking card game called Cooyah, a carryover from the old country similar to sheepshead.

The camaraderie within this living diorama is as varied and as entertaining as the kitschy bric-abrac covering the walls and shelves around the perimeter of the dining room. Most of the clientele are local with the older generation alternating between speaking American English and Walloon – a term describing both the people and the language peculiar to southeast Belgium, the Motherland, not quite French but close enough that it is often mistaken for it. Over the course of the last 170 years, the Old World Belgian dialect has been preserved here unadulterated. Prior to the mid-1950s, it was the only language spoken in most Southern Door homes and businesses, when English was discouraged – even in school.

The country restaurant was taken over in 2012 by the Vandertie family – brothers Dean and Gary, and their mother, Rose Mae. While Dean tends to all matters in the kitchen, the energetic and entertaining Gary, who died in 2020, remains the spirit of the place. Rose Mae, a larger-than-life personality and the undisputed queen bee of the business, takes charge of the front of the house, perennially decked out in perfectly color-coordinated outfits, matching eyeglass frames, full make-up, an elaborate manicure and enough costume jewelry to start her own boutique. Greeting each patron like she was everybody’s grandma, Rose Mae still manages to squeeze in a few hands of Cooyah with her friends at the back tables – neighbors she has known her entire life. She also conducts Walloon-language classes for the younger generations who are interested in carrying on the tradition, teaching classes at a back table in the restaurant on Thursday evenings each month. The Belgian Delight menu is varied, the food tasty and the cost reasonable. But people come primarily for the off-menu items

– the atmosphere – as rich as La dame blanché.

There is much to be said for tradition, family, heritage and keeping up with the old country ways. It provides a reset. And it is comforting to know that a place with its bucolic farms and modest homesteads not only exists, but that it is perfectly content to be tucked away in the southernmost corner of the peninsula – far from the distractions that await the other side of Brussels Hill.

Herons and Egrets and Bitterns,

C

ranes and herons are both tall, long-legged birds that feed in marshes. The sandhill crane is often seen feeding in upland cut-over corn fields, especially in autumn. They and Canada geese consume the fallen kernels.

Some people confuse a flying heron with a crane. Herons have S-shaped necks, which they tuck in between their wings as they fly. The lower bent part is seen in profile, protruding downward.

My late husband, Roy, would call the great blue heron the “flying wheelbarrow” because that part of the neck looks like the front wheel. A crane, on the other hand, flies with its neck fully extended.

Some of these wetland species nest in large colonies, especially the great blue heron. They tend to build their stick nests in the tallest trees available, mainly close to good food sources.

They might also nest in shorter trees and shrubs, and also on the ground in isolated areas with few predators.

Great blue herons can nest 40 to 90 feet high in trees. The common number of eggs is four, but occasionally six may

be laid. Both sexes will incubate them for a total of about 28 days.

The extreme development of so much of our county has made these nesting colonies disappear over the years. Still, the hardy great blue heron will remain here as long as good food sources can be found.

One year, we were conducting the Southern Door Christmas bird count and saw a great blue standing at the snow-covered edge of the still-open Ahnapee River in Forestville on December 28. In fact, this species was recorded nine times on our lateDecember counts in Southern Door since 1996.

Oh My! Great blue herons don’t have an oil gland used to preen feathers like many other, smaller birds have. Instead, they have unique breast feathers with edges that disintegrate into a powder. The heron uses a middle toe with a comblike edge to distribute this powder on its feathers, removing slime and oils from the water in which it feeds.

The wading birds of Door County

and it was near extinction due to hunters who killed many birds during the nesting season. The only thing hunters wanted were the long plumes of special feathers that grew during mating and breeding times. They were sought for the fashionable ladies’ hats of the Victorian Age.

This 42- to 52-inch-tall bird can stand still in shallow water for long periods, patiently waiting for some food to appear. Then it stretches its long neck and rapidly catches the fish with its spear-like beak. This is the same technique that the great egret uses to catch its food.

Fortunately, the Audubon Society was started, initially by two women in Boston in 1896. It eventually put an end to these cruel tactics which left dead adult egrets and starving young in many parts of Florida. President Theodore Roosevelt created the first National Wildlife Refuge on Pelican Island in Florida in 1903.

A century ago, the great egret was originally named the American egret,

I don’t remember seeing any great egrets here in Door County back in the

1970s. Now, they are becoming rather common each summer along quiet shorelines and sometimes in Kangaroo Lake. They nest in the Horicon Marsh, along the Mississippi River and on some islands in the Green Bay waters.

It’s thought that they will not breed until their third year, so those we see in Door County might be youngsters from last year. This stately 39-inch-tall white bird is a patient hunter like the great blue heron.

Though black-crowned night herons nest in Door County, not many people see them. They get their name from the fact that they do most of their feeding at night. As I drove south through the village of Ephraim one summer shortly after sunset, I saw the silhouette of

These birds build nests in colonies several feet to 20 feet high in trees, near shorelines or in dense cattails. They seem to be most abundant in the eastern half of our state. Their population was high a century ago, but declined sharply from the effects of DDT (a pesticide harmful to birds.)

The green heron used to be called little green heron due to its smaller size. Roy said that name could also mean there was very little green in the plumage.

They breed and nest mostly in the southeast half of Wisconsin in lowland shrubs of marshes, rivers and shoreline environments.

These birds tend to be more secluded on islands and do not nest in colonies like other herons.

The green heron has been given several nicknames, one of which is “shite-poke.” You’ve heard of a slowpoke. This bird, when startled by a human or predator, will take off rapidly and leave a long white stream of excrement in its wake!

We used to hear an American bittern on our early-morning Ridges Sanctuary bird outings 50 years ago. This was on Lime Kiln Road north of Baileys Harbor in a dense wooded swamp. You’re more likely to hear this bird than see it.

It prefers dryer areas with thick marsh grass and shallow water.

Its call sounds like a guttural “unka-chunk.” It has brown and white striped plumage and if startled, it will point its beak skyward and stand tall to blend in with the cattails.

Other herons and egrets are occasionally seen in our state, like the little blue, yellow-crowned night-heron, cattle egret, snowy egret and least bittern. They are much less common nesters and are found more often in the south.

A Break from the Booze Three mocktails to start the season

enjoy a good cocktail as much as the next person, but we all know alcohol isn’t exactly a health food. Now and then, it’s a smart idea to give yourself a break from the booze.

Luckily, non-alcoholic drinks can be just as interesting and complex as the real deal. Here are three NA recipes to help you celebrate the early days of summer.

IN YOUR GLASS

Basil Orgeat Lemonade Who doesn’t love lemonade?

The balance of sweet and tart is refreshing, nostalgic and easy to riff on when creating a mocktail. This recipe combines fresh lemon juice with aromatic basil and sweet orgeat, a floral almond syrup that’s commonly used in tiki/tropical drinks. Its depth of flavor makes it a good option for non-alcoholic drinks too.

1.5 oz (45 ml) orgeat* 1.5 oz (45 ml) fresh lemon juice 4 basil leaves 3-4 oz (90-120 ml) sparkling mineral water or soda water Basil sprig for garnish Lemon wheel for garnish Combine orgeat, lemon juice and basil leaves in a shaking tin. Add ice and shake for five seconds. Fill a glass with crushed ice. Double strain the contents of the shaking tin into the glass. Top with bubbly water. Garnish with a sprig of basil and a lemon wheel. * The process of making traditional orgeat is a bit involved, starting with raw almonds – so here’s a shortcut recipe that provides similar results.

Homemade Orgeat (shortcut) 450 g (2.25 cups) granulated sugar 300 g (1.5 cups) unsweetened almond milk 1 tsp orange blossom water 1/2 tsp rose water 1/2 tsp almond extract In a medium saucepan, combine sugar and almond milk. Stir over low heat until sugar is completely dissolved. Remove from heat and add orange blossom water, rose water and almond extract. Stir to combine.

The Grey Fox The Grey Fox is a light, airy drink that sacrifices no flavor. The base flavor comes from an Earl Grey simple syrup that is easy to make from scratch. It adds a concentrated flavor without any unnecessary dilution, and it’s balanced with bright lemon and the soft bitterness of tonic water.

Aquafaba, or chickpea water, is added to provide the light, airy texture.

1 oz (30 ml) rich Earl Grey syrup**

The Cherry Zip The Cherry Zip is reminiscent of cherry pie upon first sip, but a spicy kick steers the drink in a different direction. Black tea adds complexity and helps tame the drink’s punchier flavors (Darjeeling is my go-to here, but any black tea will work.) If you’re feeling adventurous and want to add some notes of baking spice, try this one with chai.

1 oz (30 ml) fresh lemon juice

1 oz (30 ml) unsweetened cherry juice (preferably from Montmorency cherries)

3/4 oz (22.5 ml) aquafaba (chickpea or white bean water)

1 oz (30 ml) orgeat*

2-3 oz (60-90 ml) tonic water

1 oz (30 ml) black tea (cooled)

Expressed lemon oil

1/2 oz (15 ml) fresh lemon juice

Combine syrup, lemon juice and aquafaba in a shaking tin. Dry shake (without ice) for five to ten seconds to agitate the aquafaba. Add ice to shaking tin and wet shake for five to ten seconds. Fill a collins glass with ice cubes. Double strain the contents of the shaking tin into the glass. Top with tonic water. Express lemon oil across the top.

1/4 tsp red chili flakes Mint sprig for garnish Combine all ingredients except mint in a shaking tin. Add ice and shake for 5 seconds. Fill a glass with crushed ice. Double strain the contents of the shaking tin into the glass. Garnish with a sprig of mint.

**Earl Grey Simple Syrup 200 g (~1 cup) strong Earl Grey tea 400 g (~2 cups) granulated sugar In a medium saucepan, steep 4-6 earl grey tea bags in 200 g (1 cup) boiling water for 10-15 minutes. Remove tea bags and add sugar. Stir over low heat until sugar is completely dissolved.

Remove from heat and let cool.

Morel Mushrooms And how to use them

A

friend wanted to learn about foraging in Door County, having landed here recently from the west coast. Although this particular July day we were on the hunt for chanterelle mushrooms, this story relates to foraging for any type of wild delicacy such as mushrooms, fiddlehead ferns or wild leeks. I told her I would teach her what I knew about chanterelle mushrooms; I had the opportunity to join seasoned foragers in my younger years, and I was confident on this particular mushroom.

I set us up with the tools: knives for harvesting, brushes for cleaning and netted bags for carrying the bounty. I then asked her to follow me to the location.

I drove there in a very roundabout way, turning on all the backroads I could en route. My goal was to make it difficult for her to be able to locate my spot in the future.

What I didn’t consider while scheming was modern-day technology. When we arrived, she got out of her car and dropped a location pin on her phone, and that was that. She knew exactly where she was on our magnificent Mother Earth.

I remember leaving the forest with a generous amount of mushrooms that day. Foragers be warned – once you share your secret places in the modern day, they are no longer your secret.

Foragers are hyperfocused forest walkers, moving like shadows of the trees as they tiptoe through the spring forest in search of one of nature’s most prized culinary delicacies: the morel mushroom. Though I’ve spent years looking, I can count on one hand how many times I have found a morel.

That being said, I have met many seasoned foragers over the years.

They are exceptional conversationalists, culinary aficionados, nature enthusiasts. You may see a social media post highlighting their foraging haul, baskets and bags full. You can like and comment all you want, but as soon as you ask them anything specific about the hunt, they’ll go dark.

They rarely give out their secrets.

All wild mushrooms, including morels, are finicky and weather dependent. Bumper years tend to follow a snowy, wet winter and a spring that warms early. Humidity and consistent moisture are key.

Morels are one of the first wild mushrooms to surface in the spring. In Door County, they start to pop sometime in April and can be found throughout May. Morels and asparagus tend to share a growing season.

I’ve heard so many different hypotheses on the best habitat to find morels: cow pastures, old orchards, pine forests, around dead or dying hardwoods, in areas that were recently burned or disturbed, fresh mulch in your flower beds. I have stumbled upon morels in gravel ditches while walking the dog. So no matter where you are hiking, I recommend keeping your eye out – you just never know when or where you will find them.

2024 was a bumper year for morel mushrooms.

Last spring, my son was mowing the lawn and came running in the back door, saying, “Mom, I think I just ran a morel over with the lawnmower, but I think there are a lot more – come look.”

We found over a dozen very large mushrooms in our lawn. They have never grown there before. Throughout the season, we stumbled upon morels in the woods and while walking the dog. We found enough to share with friends, spreading the culinary love. The first mushrooms we found were blond in color, and as the season progressed, we found morels that were dark brown, almost black.

The flavor of a morel mushroom is earthy and nutty, while the flesh is a bit meaty. When I find just a couple here and there, I will simply sauté them in butter, add a little salt and eat them as-is or on top of a grilled steak.

With a bumper crop like 2024, we were able to experiment with preparation and different morel dishes. The following recipes are the result of nature’s camouflage coming into focus.

The best way to clean morel mushrooms is to give them a rinse and then soak them in a bowl of lightly salted water for about 10 minutes. Place them on a paper towel, gently pat them and allow time for them to air dry before incorporating them into your recipe. Cut the larger mushrooms in half before you soak them and they will dry faster.

Foraging is not something to take lightly. Without proper training and knowledge, mushroom hunting can be one of the most dangerous activities. Take a class, do your research, or better yet, head out with a knowledgeable guide. Morels can also be purchased in season at local markets.

Let’s cross our fingers and pray for another bumper crop in 2025.

Morel Tempura Spring Pasta 4 Servings 1 quart morel mushrooms, whole ½ cup flour, all purpose

Spring Ramp & Morel Soup

¾ cup water 4-6 scallions or ramps, julienned

4 servings

¼ cup olive oil, plus extra for frying

In a medium-sized stock pot, over medium high heat, sauté:

1 lb. angel hair pasta

2 Tbsp unsalted butter 3 wild ramps or leeks, chopped

1-2 cloves fresh garlic Splash of white wine

1 rib of celery, chopped

2 Tbsp fresh thyme, removed from the stem, plus extra for garnish

½ tsp salt

3 Tbsp fresh flat leaf parsley

When the leeks are wilted and the carrots and celery are tender, add:

Fresh grated parmesan cheese

1 carrot, chopped

3-4 morel mushrooms, chopped Sauté for 2 minutes to allow the mushroom flavor to infuse into the other ingredients. Add: 2 cups chicken broth 1 medium potato, peeled and cubed Simmer until the potato is fork-tender.

Remove from heat. Using an immersion blender, blend all the ingredients together to create a creamy soup. Add the following and return the pot to low heat.

Splash of fresh lemon juice Salt and pepper to taste Bring a stock pot of salted water to a boil. While the water is heating, mix the flour and water in a bowl to create a batter. Dip each mushroom in the batter, coating thoroughly.

In a cast iron pan or deep sauté pan, heat the olive oil for frying

the morels. To test if the oil is hot enough, drop some batter into the oil. If it starts to fry and bubble, the oil is ready.

Add 1-2 battered morels to the hot oil at a time. Gently turn them throughout the cook time so they become golden on all sides. The batter is fragile; handle with care.

Repeat this process until all the mushrooms are fried. Place the cooked mushrooms on a paper towel-lined plate and set aside.

In a different large saute pan, add the ¼ cup of olive oil, scallions or ramps, garlic, wine and fresh herbs. Give everything a stir and turn heat off so the garlic doesn’t burn.

When the water comes to a boil, add the pasta. Angel hair cooks quickly in about 4 minutes. Using a pasta spoon, transfer the al dente pasta from the water to the pan with the oil and herbs.

Stir so the pasta is thoroughly coated. Add a splash of lemon and sprinkle of parmesan cheese.

When plating the pasta, each dish gets 2-3 tempura fried morels on top. Finish with a pinch of salt, cracked black pepper and a sprinkle of fresh thyme.

1 cup morel mushrooms chopped While the soup is simmering, mix up the horseradish cream. Blend together with a whisk: ½ cup heavy whipping cream 2 tbsp of fresh ground horseradish Garnish each serving with crispy ramps (sauté on high heat until ramps are crispy and brown on the edges) and a dollop of horseradish cream. Add salt and cracked black pepper to taste.
