(Breakfast table conversation)

SweetThang:

Listen, I’ve been asking you for what, four, four and a half years now to get rid of that chopper. All this time it’s been sitting out there in a greasy, nasty puddle of motor oil. Pitiful.

Me:

Darlin, we’ve talked about this a hundred times. I’m gonna fix it, I just need a little more time.

Sweet Thang:

You’re gonna fix it? You just need a little more time? How ‘bout you pretend for just a minute you’re a grown man and let’s get real about this. First, you’ve got another perfectly good scoot out there and by the way, you spend way too much time slobbering over that one, too. Second...

Me:

But I’m...

Sweet Thang:

But you’re what you knucklehead?! I’m here to tell ya, get rid of that miserable, broken down piece of... Sell it, junk it, shoot it, roll it into the river, I don’t care! Just get rid of that motorcycle or I’m gonna...

Me:

Yeah?! You’re gonna what exactly?!

Sweet Thang: (crickets)

story & photo: Burnin Stick

Me:

Backing away from the table, heading toward the door mumbling nonsense: I’m going for a ride. “See ya”.

(Five hours later, I’m back home. I notice there’s more space than usual where I park the motorcycles. Sweet Thang’s cheerfully watering plants in her garden and I see…wait, aren’t those red flowers poking through the spokes? On that bike? Sitting in the flower garden?

Brothers, FAFO.)

*****Some of this tale is actually true***** 1: “Suggestions” to make the chopper disappear WERE shared with me. Multiple times. 2: The bike DID sit in a puddle of oil and grease for years. 3: I DID plan to fix it but when I studied the numbers that proved to be a ridiculous idea. 4: The motorsickle WAS a basket case. I’d been struggling for months with making a decision about pulling the plug. 5: Sweet Thang truly IS a Sweet Thing.

And a confession: I helped push the bike to its final resting place and ever since I’ve have been working hard on a credible answer to give if somebody questions why (what appears to be) a perfectly good motorcycle is parked in the garden with vines wrapped around the frame and flowers growing out of the gas tank. The pic: taken at night so the neighbors couldn’t see me cryin. RIP BlackWidder.

Pictured: Sweet Thang’s latest garden project. RIP Black Widder.

The First Step...Admitting We need

My husband and I enjoy participating in group rides for good causes. One of those rides was for a church in a neighboring city. The event was well-attended. The weather was a little warm, but still pleasant. Even when we go to events outside our county (like this one) everyone is friendly and helpful. It was a great day for a great ride.

As we mounted back up after a stop, one of the bikers had a little trouble getting his ride to start. It took a few minutes and a few heads put together, but eventually they got the bike started. We mounted up and headed out for the next stop. We hadn’t been back on the road for very long, however, when that same bike stalled out again. This time the biker wasn’t able to get it restarted. There was some kind of a disconnect between the battery and what would keep it recharging. (Yes, I know that’s the lamest explanation ever. Mechanical I most certainly am not, but you get the gist of it: The bike wouldn’t start and it wouldn’t run.)

One of the (many) things that I have learned about bikers is that they are not quitters. Where others see insurmountable problems, they look for workable solutions. They are not only tough, but they are also resilient and creative. On this ride, they put their heads together once more and came up with a plan. One of the bikers whose battery was fully charged exchanged his good battery for the other biker’s dead one. This enabled the stalled biker to get his ride up and running long enough to make it back to the church. The biker who was now using the dead battery got one of the other bikers to jump-start his ride. As we rode back to the church, that biker’s engine recharged the stalled biker’s dead battery.

Some of us are like that bike that stalled. We tool along under our own steam. We think we have everything under control. We don’t need help. We got this. We can stand on our own two feet. “God helps those who help themselves,” we think. (By the way, that’s not in the Bible.) But there comes a time in nearly everyone’s life when we realize that we just can’t do it. We run and run and run until there’s nothing left. Our battery is dead. Why?

Because we haven’t connected it to the source of Power so that He can recharge us. We refuse to recognize that our strength is limited. However, when we come to the end of every reserve we have, that’s when we realize — and hopefully admit — that we need help. That’s the first step.

While knowing and admitting we need help is good, we need to know where to find that help, too. All the gas in the world wouldn’t have made that Harley start. The best mechanic in the business couldn’t make that dead battery run. Someone had to be willing to trade their good battery for that dead one. And you know what? That’s exactly the help we need, too. Our hearts are broken, sinful, dead. Nothing will fix them unless someone trades them out. Someone did — or has offered to. That Someone is Jesus. When He chose to hang on that cross, He did it to give you a choice between eternity in heaven or eternal separation from God.

But here’s the thing: time is running out for you to make that choice. Whether you see that as this world’s “expiration date” or your own, the fact is that each day you are moving closer to a time when you will no longer have the chance to take Jesus up on His offer. If you ride, you know how quickly it can happen. Don’t keep putting off this decision..

Here’s what it boils down to: The day you leave this earth, you will stand before God. When you do, what will be your answer if He asks why you should go to heaven? Will you make a joke about all your friends being elsewhere? Maybe that’s funny to you now, but when you’re in the presence of Almighty God, I don’t think you’re going to feel like laughing. I’m serious. THIS is serious. Think long and hard and then make your choice, because you know what?

That’s exactly what Jesus did. He thought long and hard, sweated blood even, and in the end He chose to suffer a violent, humiliating death to give you — YOU — a chance at life.

Take that chance. Choose life.

For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.

Romans 3:23 NLT

But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.

Romans 5:8 NLT

If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved.

Patriot Guard Riders

BehindLifeBarz

This is the backbone of the Patriot Guard Riders, our members. They are not Ride Captains, Senior Ride Captains, Assistant State Captains, or State Captains.

They are men and women, young and old who are willing give a few hours out of their day, day in and day out to stand a tall and silent Flag Line in honor of a Soldier, Sailor, Airmen, Marine, Coast Guardsman, Police Officer, Firefighter, or member of the Emergency Medical Services who has passed on from this life.

Our members are Black, White, Asian, Hispanic and nearly every other Nationality. They are Republicans, Democrats, Liberals, and Conservatives. They ride Harley-Davidsons, Hondas, Suzukis, Yamahas, BMW’s. They drive cars and some drive trucks. I’ve even seen some show up on a bicycle.

Simply put, they are Patriots willing to stand in the rain, sleet, snow, or hail. They are willing to stand in heat as well as the cold. They pay their own expenses, take time away from their families and duties to honor those who deserve it most.

On occasion, they are the “family” of a Veteran or First Responder who has no family of his or her own. Sometimes they act as pallbearers when none are available. What they do they do as an act of selfless Patriotism and a love of country. They set aside political differences. There is no such thing as race, creed, or religion. They gather as one, to perform a simple task that has a profound effect on the families of our fallen.

For some, being a Patriot Guard Rider has helped them heal some of the unseen wounds caused by war. They embrace the brotherhood and camaraderie that comes along with being a Patriot Guard Rider. For others, it’s a way of giving back to those who gave so much.

Friendships are forged, tears are shed, and they walk away knowing they have done the right thing, knowing that what we do is the least that we can do as Americans. God Bless each of you, your dedication and willingness to do the right thing has touched the lives of families from California to New York, from Hawaii to Texas. Never doubt that what you’re doing is important. I can assure you that those families will never forget what you did for their loved one.

Story: 2Timer

Hello my Happy Riders!!

Too much chaos happening in the world today. The assassination of Charlie Kirk, some crazy alien comet, and many companies around the globe are doing transformations that include thousands of layoffs. It’s crazy man! I myself has got affected by these layoffs. My whole future seemed to be a red carpet walk until just a week ago. I went from talking contractors and vendors to calling other jobs and setting interviews within days of each other. Is anything safe anymore?

Let’s talk Charlie Kirk. If this isn’t a slap in the face of the American people. No matter what side you are on. This should be an eye opener. This guy was basically me and you. Not everyone speaks politics. I remember back in the day, the old folks would tell you, you don’t speak about how much you make an hour, politics or religion. You stayed away from those topics, because those topics hit different.

You go walking up to a biker bar, and start dropping any of those lines someone is going to get offended, and there goes the mud, blood and

the beer. I talk politics, I say what’s in my mind, but I also listen. I gather my own information. Then try to research everything. But that doesn’t mean I’m right. It means I tried to educate myself the best possible way but it also comes with missing information. Corrupted information, or propaganda. It’s a slippery slope, and nobody wants to get it wrong.

Charlie Kirk was a man who believed in God, spoke freely about his faith, and it didn’t matter who you were, or where you stood. He would look you in the eye and tell you, God loves you. No matter where you stood on whatever you thought was right or wrong. He would let you know. God loves you! I think it’s sucks that he was put down the way he was, but his soul brought many souls with him. Millions. His one soul brought so many souls to God, He must have earned a righteous place in heaven. So many people who have never even looked towards God, or been to church. Had made at least one trip to God’s house for the first time. I think God would smile at good ol’ Charlie for that.

Now do I believe any of the bullshit the news is saying? Any of the bullshit the FBI is saying? Hell no! I don’t believe none of the shit. If you are as country as I am. Had any dealings at all with a 30-06 rifle. You know damn well, what a small piece of soft flesh would do from the impact of that caliber. Now, if they would have said, a 17HMR...okay I would almost bite into their bullshit sandwich. But I’m sorry. The sandwich they made smelt like bullshit, and I ain’t eating it.

I’m a tin hat wearing, anti-government white man, that’s straight, God loving, and American flag waving biker. I don’t push you. I don’t care where you stand on anything as long as you don’t push me. Pushing me means, forcing your opinions on my children, and my God given rights. I could care less if you wear

a diaper on your head and shit in a cat box. As long as you don’t expect me to wear one with you and call to you as here kitty kitty. We are good as gold. But the moment you force your mental health issues on me you are treading on me son...and I’m going to bite your ass!

Okay...Let’s change the subject for a moment. I want to ask for some prayers to one of my brothers. He t-boned a cage that pulled out in f ront of him and it put him in the hospital with a list of broken bones and other problems. If you can, while you are praying for the world to make a sharp right, can you add Chris to your list. Lord knows the needs. The picture you see is him and me. I’d really appreciate it.

With all that’s been going on lately, today I decided to run and see my aunt. I needed a great excuse to send my knees to the breeze, so I got on my bike and rode up to Snow Hill. Juanita is her name and she’s been a solid biker her whole life. She gets so thrilled to get on two wheels. So, I figured I would let her ride, but she has surgery coming up soon before she moves in with her daughter. So we had to make a hard pass. But still the ride was enjoyable to do. It gave me time to relax and let go of all these troubles today. After my visit, I pulled over for a gas fill up and an ice cold drink. I went outside to enjoy this comforting air we are getting in Eastern NC.

As I was drinking my drink an older gentleman pulled up and spoke with me awhile. We just chewed the oil rag a minute and the whole conversation was nothing but riding motorcycles and old day dreams of a once better life. Then he said, we still got a chance everyday to make it better young man. Every day the Lord allows us to wake up. We have an opportunity to make something better.

I liked that. He told me to be careful on that thing and be safe. We went on our separate ways, but his words still held on...and he is right. Each day we have an opportunity to make a better day. I’m going to leave it at that. Y’all be safe out there and keep twisting that wick. 2TIMER

Blue Knights NC Chapter 2 Wake county

Blue Knights NCII: Rolling with Purpose, Service, and Brotherhood

A Ride with Purpose: The 4th Annual Motor Muscle Excursion Rolls to Success

What a day! The 4th Annual Motor Muscle Excursion (MME), hosted by the Blue Knights NC Chapter II in partnership with Whole Vet, turned out to be the best one yet. With around 75 bikes rumbling out of Tobacco Road Harley-Davidson under clear blue skies, it was the kind of ride that reminds you why we do what we do.

The morning kicked off with a free breakfast provided by Tobacco Road Harley-Davidson — hot coffee, good food, and plenty of laughs as riders caught up, swapped stories, and got ready to roll. Once the engines fired up, we pulled out with a police escort leading the way, enjoying perfect weather, great company, and the open road all the way to Garden State Grill in Lillington.

After arriving safely, the good times kept rolling with great food, fellowship, and stories shared over lunch. Both the Blue Knights and Whole Vet said they were thrilled with how it all came together, calling this year’s ride the most successful MME to date and celebrating the record amount raised for both organizations. Every handshake, every shared laugh, and every mile ridden reflected the heart behind this event — helping those who serve our communities and our country.

As the 2025 ride wrapped up and plans were already underway for next year, riders were encouraged to mark their calendars for Saturday, September 19, 2026, and come out again for another day of purpose, friendship, and giving back. Organizers say they’re already brainstorming ways to make the 5th Annual MME bigger, smoother, and even more meaningful for everyone involved.

But the work of the Blue Knights NC Chapter II doesn’t stop there. Up next, they’ll be escorting the brave women participating in the 2025 Le Tour de Femme, a women-only cancer survivor bicycle ride featuring 62-, 31-, and 15-mile routes. The Blue Knights will be there from the first pedal stroke to the last finish line, keeping every rider safe and supported along the way.

Story and Photos: Samantha Raybon

And just before Christmas, on Monday, December 22, the Blue Knights Wake County Chapter II will join forces with Blue Knights Johnston County Chapter XII to deliver cards and gifts to children and families in the WakeMed Hospital children’s ward, bringing some extra holiday cheer to those spending the season in the hospital.

This year’s MME was more than just a ride — it was a reminder of the good that happens when law enforcement, veterans, and the motorcycle community come together. Each year, it grows not just in numbers but in heart.

Let’s Ride for Those Who Serve. Let’s Ride with Purpose.

“It’s more than just a ride — it’s a reminder of what happens when riders, veterans, and law enforcement come together for a purpose.”

Wyatt’sLemonade Lemonade

STURGIS, SD

Wyatt’s Lemonade

Amazing work by Wyatt, his parents and everyone who helped make this years lemonade stand a huge success!

Bikers are a very giving group and they love to help a worthy cause.

Wyatt’s Lemonade is definately that!

Check out his website at: www.wyattslemonade.com

Wyatt started his lemonade stand in 2020 as a way to earn a Lego. The stand never started as a way to donate money to any organization. Plain and simple, like most kids that start a lemonade stand at the age of 7, he wanted to earn money. We made the decision to do free lemonade so it was about meeting people, seeing awesome bikes, and keeping bikers hydrated. The deal was mom and dad would buy the Lego after Rally was over if Wyatt worked hard and earned it. That’s it. We never expected people to donate money, and we never expected how generous people would be.

Once it was clear that he would get to buy the Lego with money earned from donations we then decided to teach about saving, spending, and giving. Since the beginning of the stand Wyatt has always saved for college, spent a little on something he wants, and then we taught him that when you are taken care of it’s important to give back. That’s how the donation part of the stand came to be.

We never expected the stand to reach as many people as it did in 2021 and we never expected to be where we are right now in 2025. We know we have amazing people in the lemonade family who support Wyatt (and mom and dad), but we also get a ton of hate. We’ve heard it all over the years. People mad because Wyatt doesn’t donate 100% of what he gets at the stand (looking at you area school teachers). People mad because Wyatt donates anything at all. People angry because of who Wyatt chooses to donate to. People who think Devin and I go buy a new motorcycle every year (which is maybe the best one yet as we don’t even own a motorcycle, currently). People who question how much money Wyatt brings in. People who say the stand has become too commercial so they refuse to come anymore.

Here’s what I’m going to say. The stand started as a way to earn a Lego. If Wyatt would have chosen to keep 100% of donations received at the stand that would have been ok. But he didn’t (and we didn’t). We chose to use this experience as a way to teach life lessons and to do something good. This is a place for kindness and hope and love. If you want to judge us and gossip about us behind our backs then go ahead….but please remove yourself from this family. The stand used to be a week long situation for a couple hours each day during Rally. It is now a year long, daily event. We love what the stand has become. We love the people we have met. We love all the experiences and life lessons the stand has taught us all. But the hate gets old and after awhile it tears you down. If you choose to share hate or judgement on any of Wyatt’s pages you will be removed, as we simply don’t have the time or energy to continue to combat it. Please help us make these pages (Facebook) a reflection of what is represented at the lemonade stand. Pure and simple: love, friendship, kindness, and changing the world one Cup of Hope at a time. ~ Mom & Dad

Wyatt had visitors from all over this great country of ours! On this page we have included a few. Check out Wyatt’s page and see what he is doing. Check out those donation numbers above!!!

Livin' The Life

Ready To Go

Below:

Started out on a 2.5hp mini-bike when I was 12. Been riding for over 50 years. Currently own a 2023 H-D Road Glide. I ride year-round from here in North Carolina. Recently, Jan. 17th, 2025, took a ride to check out some new gear and fulfill a ride challenge. Started the morning at 37 degrees and 55 by midafternoon.

I keep my ‘23 Road Glide on charger but I try to take it out and run about 50-100 miles for my monthly ride challenges. Today was a gorgeous Carolina day. Keep your knees in the breeze!

9/11

Fallen Ride

Blue Knights NCVIII in Greenville NC held it’s annual 9/11 Fallen Ride on 9-11 to honor the fallen. Rain or shine the ride continued. Much needed wind therapy behind barz. The group rode a 32 mile loop around the southern part of Pitt County to honor 9/11. After the ride the group’s final stop was at Moore’s BBQ in Winterville for some much needed social time and good food. Ride with Pride.

This year, with beautiful fall weather, EXILED Motorcycle Club welcomed friends, family and our community to the 17th annual You’re Not Alone Day (YNAD). Our club and family began this year’s journey, as it always does, by taking nominations and selecting amazing families in our own community that are in need of a helping hand and to be reminded that they are not alone. The families we chose are truly beautiful people and this year was no exception.

Our first selection was Elizabeth Robertson, affectionately known as “Lady Bug.” She is a vibrant and beloved neighbor who brings joy wherever she goes—often seen riding around on her golf cart, lending a hand to anyone in need. She has been diagnosed with gastroesophageal cancer. Doctors discovered a large cancerous growth affecting both her esophagus and stomach, which has sadly spread to other areas. The light and fun spirit the Lady Bug brought to the event was palpable all day. She truly blessed us more than we could ever pay back.

Secondly was Lawson McCutcheon. He is 2 years old. On July 5th, Lawson was taken to the emergency room due to a swollen lip and recurring fevers. At Children’s Hospital of Richmond, after several days and many tests a bone marrow biopsy was performed. On July 8th, Lawson was officially diagnosed with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). On July 9th, Lawson received his first dose of chemotherapy and continues to travel to Richmond weekly for treatment. To our excitement, Lawson was able to attend YNAD. He ran around the clubhouse ground like a typical 2 year old. He helped to remind us that no matter what is going on in this life, life goes on. This 2 year old displays a strength that most adults struggle with.

EXILED MC has always looked at our YNAD recipients as new members of our family. I know I can speak for the rest of us when I say, we are the lucky ones to call these folks family.

Behind Barz Life

YOU'RE NOT

NOT ALONE DAY 43

As always the community came out in force. Nearly 100 participants in the mixed poker run which included Motorcycles, classic cars, hot rods and jeeps. Alex Gentry, a long time YNAD supporter started our poker run with a burn out with his Hot Rod Chevy S-10.

The poker run made its first stop at the Dam on Kerr Lake. The second stop took us into North Carolina, crossing Lake Gaston. Headed into the third stop we crossed Lake Gaston again at Eatons Ferry, into historic Norlina. Once we made it back to the EXILED MC club house, we chowed down!! The menu included BBQ, baked beans, slaw and some of the best homemade desserts donated by our Ol’ Ladies. As usual, the auction did not disappoint. This year we had a live action as well as a silent auction for themed baskets. The live auction is always the highlight of the day. It ranges from pure trash talking, laughing until you hurt and tears of joy and appreciation. If you’ve never been here for that portion, you are truly missing out.

After everything was said and done, came the moment that we had worked several months to get to. Presenting the recipients with our gift. This is always the time when it all comes together. This is when we all are reminded what all the blood sweat and tears are about. The faces on the families are all the reward we need. Tears fell as we hugged that showed the connection and love. This is what it’s about…We took a moment to give glory to God, without Him none of this would be possible. EXILED MC and our families are thankful for the countless businesses, churches, organizations and community members that make YNAD possible. If we tried to list everyone who had a hand in this event, we’d need more pages. These are the people that deserve the credit. We know and embrace the fact that we are simply a conduit. A connection between a wonderful community and a need. We are blessed to serve as that conduit.

I challenge you, if you’ve never attended this event, please do. You owe it to yourself to come see what this thing is all about. Always, the first Saturday in October.

the good news!

Rodger Duvall ~ Jesus Freak

“Your Destiny Is All About The Ride”

The stop sign before the road ahead. “The Forest before the Trees”

At times we don’t realize that what’s in our view is all we can see. We don’t look beyond it, we can’t see that far, we can only imagine what is there and we get lost in that thought.

Most times, we don’t realize it holds the answers, are you still with me? Ok let’s pull over before we go any further down the road. Grab a drink, some shade, sit back and gather our thoughts...let’s talk.

Your destiny is all about the ride, what gets you there, how you get there...the why, and who’s with you or not.

All of us have a destiny mapped out for each one of us. How we get there is beyond what we can see and free will is in it.

There is God’s will, and the will we would like. Remember that thought in thinking about this wonder, sometimes most times our will can prevent one from knowing what’s beyond us.

Here’s the amazing part in all of this, no matter what your dream is, the plan, destiny, free will always be in the mix.

His destination is for everyone no matter what you can’t see.

Ok, let’s mount up. Crank it! KSU...LETS RIDE!

As you leave which direction are you going to go? Left or right? Venture out and know this “Free Will “ will be along for the rides.

Ponder this, real love is giving someone you love, ( really love) free will for themselves. God’s plan is in it, it has already been calculated in this ride of life.

And this works for the good of both, acknowledge this, to acknowledge something is to accept this truth. God is more than enough able to take anything even other than His plan and turn it around for good.

Did you see that! He allows our free will because it is not going to override His ride for you.

Which direction are you going to go, left or right? Maybe left will take you back to where you started, right will be to continue towards the direction you were on, in accepting the existence of this truth.

Remind yourself to acknowledge His will in yours. This truly is the beauty in this ride of life. To have complete knowledge of that can be hard to understand.

Freedom; is the power for right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint. That’s liberating; be set free independent a release from any difficulty that is oppressive.

Now you can Trust God completely, whether you mess up or not. He truly will work all this together for good for those who love God and are call to His good purpose, (His Will)

Now, throttle up and ride free, free from anything trying to weigh on your mind and heart, let it go with the wind behind you. Sit all in the saddle and enjoy your new heart, enjoy really enjoy living to ride and riding to live. Be free from anything that blocks you view.

Jesus has seen your beginning and end here. Leave what you can and can’t see to His will for you.

“Look unto Jesus the author and finisher of your faith” “It is finished” All taken care of, now let’s Ride, with Jesus.

Let’s Ride...“Jesus Freak” Rodger
