ANY MINUTE NOW

BY RESIDENT SCOTT CASTELLANOS

Sitting down to write my article this month, I kept thinking about waiting. You see, I am a procrastinator and waiting is what we do best, much to the frustration of others in a lot of cases, which I am sure my wife, mother and editor can confirm. A famous pro-waiting quote is “Good things come to those who wait”, which I always thought was an Abraham Lincoln quote or at least from those old Guinness ads. It turns out it is originally from an English poet named Violet Fane. There are some antiwaiting quotes too, such as “If we wait until we’re ready, we’ll be waiting for the rest of our lives.” Which is attributed to Lemony Snicket.

I am not sure if I am Pro or Anti when it comes to waiting, but I do know it is a part of life we all experience regularly. A lot of my favorite moments have happened while waiting. My wife and I once got stuck in an airport waiting to fly on standby and while we trekked from gate to gate, we played games, talked, and laughed. Now I have multiple funny stories I have shared with folks from that experience.

When I was in the Marines, we had a saying called hurry up and wait, because it always felt like we would have long periods of time with nothing and all of a sudden it was “GO” time. It was during the waiting that we hung out and solidified those friendships. Heck! My wife waited a long time for me to pop the question, longer than most would have, I am sure. And thanks to her waiting, I have my wacky little family.

I don’t think I gained any additional insight on waiting or not, but it did get me thinking and writing, which is what I needed to do all along. Not sure, after all this, if I am PRO-waiting or ANTIwaiting. I guess I will just need to wait and see….
