It is with great pride and gratitude that I’m able to report that 2022 has proven another exciting and eventful year for our remarkable team.

The strong performance of the Atlantic Seaboard, City Bowl and Southern Suburbs luxury property markets escalated further this year and enabled us to significantly expand our market share in several key areas.

As I discussed at a recent property panel, continued semigration to the Cape and the international desire for luxury accommodation is likely to continue to support this buoyant market for the foreseeable future, Cape Town’s desirability is retained in its beauty, strong infrastructure, appealing climate, beaches, wine farms, fine restaurants and wide range of shopping and cultural amenities.

It is currently ranked 12 globally on the 2022 Sustainable Cities Index, with the best air quality in the 2022 Index in Africa.

The above factors place us on a par with many of the world’s most desirable places to live. These features, combined with a weak rand and favourable exchange rate, as well as lack of supply in some of the Mother City’s most desirable neighbourhoods, have increased prices in many suburbs.

I’ve personally witnessed remarkable activity in Bishopscourt, where increased buyer demand has seen us achieve several record-breaking sales literally within days of (and, in some cases, even prior to) listing. We’re therefore understandably excited about showing off our newest

offerings in this prestigious suburb, with the upcoming launch of two brand new upmarket developments offering that ‘next level of luxury.’

Although the bulk of sales in recent months have been driven by freehold homes in prestigious suburbs such as Constantia, Bishopscourt and Higgovale (along with top Dogon agent Adrien Epstein recently achieving sales of R71, 5 million in one week in Clifton/ Bantry Bay), so our development team too have achieved exceptional sales results. In fact, I firmly believe that our wide array of top-class developments, located everywhere from Fresnaye to Hout Bay, really are the jewels in our crown and enable us to offer that perfect solution to every homebuyer.

Together, our team recently celebrated a wonderful year-end function of ‘food, jamming and fun’ at Soute in Salt River. ROAST BEEF WITH CARAMELISED ONION GRAVY /

Skilfully roasted. Artfully blended.

INGREDIENTS

1 head of garlic (about 12 cloves), cut in half 5 thyme sprigs, leaves picked, plus 1 extra 1.8kg beef sirloin

3–4 tbsp olive oil

4 large onions, sliced 150g plain flour 500ml red wine

1.5 litres hot beef stock

METHOD

Rub the garlic halves and thyme leaves all over the beef. Place the joint in a large dish, drizzle over the olive oil, then rub it into the meat all over. Cover and leave to marinate in the fridge for 1–2 days before you cook it (you don’t have to marinate the beef in advance, but it does make it super tasty! – see Tip). Take the beef out of the fridge about an hour before cooking, to let it come up to room temperature.

Preheat the oven to 190°C/170°C fan/Gas 5. Preheat a dry frying pan until very hot, then sear the beef over a high heat until it’s coloured on all sides. Place the beef in a large, hob-proof roasting tray with

Transfer the beef to a warm platter, cover loosely with foil and leave to rest for at least 20 minutes, and anything up to 40 minutes, before serving.

Meanwhile, to make the gravy, place the roasting tray over a low heat on the hob, add the onions to the juices in the tray and cook gently for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until really soft and caramelised. Stir in the flour until combined, then whisk in the red wine, making sure there are no lumps. Bring to the boil, whisking, then bubble rapidly until the red wine has reduced by half. Stir in the hot stock, then cook over a medium heat for about 8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until reduced to a thick gravy.

Carve the beef thinly and pour the gravy into a warm jug. Serve with Yorkshire Puddings and steamed chard.

TIP

If you prefer not to marinate the beef before cooking, simply place the garlic/thyme and oil rubbed joint of beef in a large roasting tray. Continue to sear and roast as in step 3 onwards.

SAGE & ONION STUFFING /

A Family Favourite.

INGREDIENTS

1 tbsp butter, plus extra for greasing

1 onion, peeled and finely chopped

30g breadcrumbs

½ tsp garlic powder or granules

½ tsp smoked paprika

Pinch ground white pepper

1 tsp mixed dried herbs

Few sprigs fresh sage, leaves finely chopped

½ tsp baking powder

1 tsp self-raising flour

500g sausage meat

METHOD

Preheat the oven to 220°C/Fan 200°C/Gas 7. Grease an ovenproof dish or small roasting tray with butter. Melt the butter in a small frying pan over a medium heat and add the chopped onion. Cook for 6-8 minutes or until softened. Transfer the onion to a large bowl and allow to cool.

Add the breadcrumbs, dried spices, dried herbs, sage, baking powder and flour to the bowl and mix well to combine. Pour in 200ml boiling water from the kettle, mix well and leave to stand for 5 minutes.

Add the sausage meat and mix thoroughly – this may be easier by hand.

Using damp hands, divide the stuffing mixture into 12 portions and roll each into a ball (each about the size of a walnut or golf ball) then place in the greased dish.

Leave to stand for 5 minutes.

Bake for 25-30 minutes or until cooked through.

TIPS

To make this stuffing recipe even easier, you could replace the onion with 1 tsp onion powder or granules and the fresh sage with 1 tbsp dried sage.

For a Christmas twist, try adding a handful of chopped cooked chestnuts and dried cranberries along with the sausagemeat.

The stuffing mixture can also be baked as one single dish if preferred; follow the recipe as above but press the mixture into the greased dish instead of rolling into balls in step 4. Bake as above then slice into portions to serve.

The Breedekloof Chenin 2021

Light lemon yellow in colour, the nose exudes the amazing fruit purity so typical of the Breedekloof. On the palate, expect a concentrated, fruity acidity backed by well-integrated oak and good length too. Created in collaboration with winemakers from five of the Breedekloof’s best known wine producers, who each offered their finest Chenin Blanc barrels.

And whilst it is certainly possible for you to sign documentation, contracts and the like whilst in another country the inconvenience and costs likely to be associated with the necessary authentication procedures – to meet local requirements – are avoidable

We discuss what a power of attorney (POA) is, the difference between a special power of attorney and a general one, what they involve, why and when you should consider signing one (or several), and how to structure each one to be valid and fit-for-purpose

If you are emigrating or going overseas for an extended holiday or work contract, you may leave behind some form of “unfinished business” Perhaps you own a property, other assets or bank accounts needing attention or have outstanding tax/business/financial affairs, contracts to be signed, cars to be licenced, or something else unresolved that requires your future agreement or signature Even if you can’t think of anything specific, consider executing (before you leave, of course) an appropriate power of attorney in favour of someone you trust to act on your behalf

The structure you will need depends on what affairs you need to deal with and why It can be difficult to decide whether a POA is appropriate for a particular purpose and if so how wide or how restric ted you should make the powers you are granting to your agent Finding the correct wording to satisfy the requirements of whichever authority or other party is involved can also be challenging For instance, specific forms are required by the Deeds Office, SARS, and banks You might also need to leave behind more than one POA, each structured for a particular purpose Similarly, you may be uncertain as to who to appoint as your agent, who is best qualified for each purpose, and even who you can trust to act professionally and honestly

There is no prescribed form or list of required formalities for a valid POA, but there are many possible permutations and legal risks involved, so the only way to ensure that it is valid and fit-for-purpose is to seek professional assistance specific to your circumstances. WHAT IS A POWER OF ATTORNEY?

A Power of Attorney (“POA”) is a document you sign authorising someone else to manage your affairs on your behalf as your agent You can grant it for a specific purpose as a “Special Power of Attorney”, or it can be a widely worded “General Power of Attorney” In theory, you can grant power of attorney orally, but in practice, no one will (or should) act on that

You must be at least 18 years old to execute a POA, which remains valid only for so long as you have “legal capacity” You can terminate the POA at any time

You can execute and sign contracts, legal forms and the like in a foreign country, but it can be a real mission Depending on the circumstances, you may need to find (and pay) a notary public or embassy/consular official to authenticate documents, your signature, copies of papers etc If it’s an embassy or consulate you need, you could find yourself travelling to another city, perhaps even another country
