One of the most attractive investment destinations in the South African property market remains the Western Cape, with Lightstone reporting that most local semigrants continue to see the province, and Cape Town in particular, as their destination of choice, due to its sound infrastructure planning and favourable business environment.

INGREDIENTS
50g (1.7 oz) butter
3 green cardamom pods, lightly crushed
1 cinnamon stick
1 tbsp finely grated ginger
2 garlic cloves, finely grated
1 cup tomato puree or tomato passata
½ tbsp Kashmiri red chilli powder*
1 tsp sweet paprika
1 tbsp sugar
1 tsp sea salt
½ cup cream
2 tbsp natural yoghurt mixed with 2 tsp water, to serve
dried mint or kasoori methi, to serve naan or roti bread, to serve slices of red onion, green chillies & lime wedges, to serve
MARINATED CHICKEN
500g (1 lb) chicken thigh fillets, cut into large, bite-sized pieces
1 tbsp lemon juice
2 tsp Kashmiri red chilli powder
½ tbsp sweet paprika
1 tsp sea salt
½ cup natural yoghurt
½ tbsp finely grated ginger
1 tbsp finely grated garlic
2 tsp garam masala
1 tbsp vegetable oil
1 tbsp melted butter
METHOD
For the marinated chicken, combine the chicken with the lemon juice, red chilli powder, sweet paprika and salt. Mix well. Add the yoghurt, ginger, garlic, garam masala and oil. Mix until combined. Carefully thread the chicken pieces onto skewers (if using wooden skewers, it helps to soak them in water for a few minutes beforehand so they don’t burn).
Heat a chargrill plate, barbecue plate or frying pan over high heat. When the plate or pan is very hot, add the chicken. Cook for 3-4 minutes or until starting to char and burn at the edges. Turn over the chicken, brush over the melted butter, and cook for a further 3-4 minutes or until starting to char and burn at the edges. Don’t worry about cooking the chicken all the way through, as we’ll be finishing it off in the sauce later in the cook. Transfer to a plate and set aside for later.
While the chicken is cooking, heat 50g butter in a deep frying pan over medium-high heat. When the butter is foaming, add the cardamom and cinnamon. Cook for a minute or until fragrant. Then add the ginger and garlic. Cook for another minute. Add the tomato puree, red chilli powder, paprika, sugar and salt. Simmer for 10 minutes, stirring every so often.
Pull the chicken off the skewers and add to the sauce. Simmer for 10 minutes. Then stir through the cream. To serve, drizzle over the yoghurt and sprinkle with dried mint leaves. Serve with the bread and red onion, chillies and lime.
5-SPICE APPLE & GINGER CRUMBLE /

INGREDIENTS
8 large apples, peeled, cored and cut into chunks
1 tbsp finely grated fresh ginger
3 tbsp brown sugar
1 tsp 5-spice powder
¼ tsp sea salt
vanilla ice cream, to serve
CRUMBLE
100g butter (about 8 tablespoons)
1 cup plain flour
¼ cup roughly chopped almonds
2 tsp vanilla extract or 1 tsp vanilla bean paste
½ tsp sea salt
METHOD
Preheat oven to 180°C/356°F.
In a large baking dish, combine the fruit, ginger, sugar, 5-spice and salt. Cover with foil place on a baking tray. Bake for 30 minutes.
In the meantime, make the crumble. In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. In a large bowl, place the flour, almonds, vanilla and salt. Pour in the melted butter and mix until combined and ‘lumpy’ like wet sand.
Remove the baking dish from the oven and uncover. Use a wooden spoon to push fruit down a little. Scatter the crumble topping over the fruit. Bake for another 30 minutes or until the crumble topping is golden.
Cool for 30 minutes before serving. Serve with vanilla icecream.

Cape Town’s illustrious Clifton and regal Bishopscourt are undoubtedly the most exclusive areas in the city – one a haven of stately mansions surrounded by forest and mountains, the other a curation of steel and glass temples flanking sun-drenched Atlantic beaches. If these glittering real estate behemoths could step into the ring donning boxing gloves or have a bloodlust dance-off, which of the two would snatch that trophy? Which would ultimately be Numero Uno?
Be it lifestyle or views, safety or amenities, traffic or schools – or even just value for money –assessing each contender’s prowess and fitness needs a holistic approach. After all, buying a home is by no means straightforward. Much comes down to that X-factor that’s hard to define.
Each suburb will be assessed by pertinent factors, that on the surface should clearly distinguish the two contenders making the standout winner easy to identify. But will our exploration be this simple?
just down to higher demand because of the limited number of homes available? On the other hand, it seems homes sell faster in Bishopscourt, so does this mean it’s generally more popular and therefore more sought-after?

Either way, this subjective debate comes down to personal perspective, that shared human condition of us-versus-them, and by no means an accurate measure of contendibility in our race for the crown.
To reach a conclusion, one needs to dig deeper. We need to explore the characteristics of each area, some inherent factors are purely down to an unchangeable case of locality and geography while others are more experiential, based in the realm of feeling.
