Episcopal Day School of St. Matthew
Your child has the power to lead with purpose and make a difference every day.
At Episcopal Day School we empower them with the tools to do just that. From our Pre-K and Kindergarten program at Charles House to the confident voices developed in our eighth-grade year, our program grows with them—chapter by chapter.
Charles House Lower School Middle School
Every child who enters Episcopal Day begins a story all their own, a story rooted in wonder, shaped by connection, and written with care.
At every stage, Episcopal Day offers more than just an education. We offer a foundation built on values, a curriculum grounded in meaning, and a community that guides students to become exactly who they are meant to be.
It all starts here.
Charles House
At Charles House, our pre-K and kindergarten students don’t just learn—they discover. Guided by loving teachers, they explore the real world with their minds, hearts, and hands wide open. Each day is a chapter in a joyful, whimsical journey of connection, growth, and discovery.
At Charles House, your student will be able to explore the world around them with joy and purpose, guided by teachers who know how to nurture wonder, socialemotional development, and foundational academic skills in meaningful, hands-on ways.
Guided by Wonder, Grounded in Care.
our students make real-world connections through joyful, hands-on learning. They explore real-world topics through playful, sensory-rich experiences that spark curiosity and make learning stick. Through play-based learning, outdoor exploration, and imaginative connection-making our Charles House program offers a powerful start to your child’s academic journey.
When studying trees, our kindergarteners didn’t just read about them—they visited the Head of School’s home, touched bark, made observations, and collected natural treasures, all guided by loving adults who turned questions into adventures.
Our Charles House teaching team are more than educators— they’re expert guides who know how to scaffold joyful learning experiences while nurturing each child’s social and emotional growth. Whether they’re learning to share, express big feelings, or ask questions about the world around them, your child will be gently supported by teachers who see and celebrate them for who they are.
In lower school, students build on their early foundations, developing confidence, curiosity, and deeper understanding. They begin to see themselves not just as learners but as readers, writers, problemsolvers, artists, friends, and community members.
Our Lower School program fosters a sense of agency— inviting students to think deeply, express themselves clearly, and care boldly with hands-on learning, integrated subjects, and meaningful challenges.
Students don’t just grow—they thrive.
From first through fourth grade, Episcopal Day students learn in an environment that nurtures intellectual curiosity, emotional insight, and purposeful connection. With a curriculum grounded in meaning and care, every lesson becomes a building block in a story of growth, character, and connection. This is where learning expands and purpose deepens.
A lower schooler might spend their part of their day: packing lunches on behalf of the society of St. Vincent de Paul, building an altar for Dia de los Muertos, meeting new insects with the Insect Discovery Lab, learning about the human body by being ‘doctors’ for the day, having a holi party on Mustang Meadow, watching strawberry plants blossom in their classrooms, learning about a new artist in art class and try to imagine life through their eyes, taking a trip to the Japanese Tea Garden in Central Park for some plein-air painting, travelling the world through a classmate’s culture. selling handmade goods to raise money for the SPCA, then share lunch with a buddy from a younger grade. Every day blends academic rigor with social-emotional learning, fostering whole-child development.
At this stage, students begin to connect the dots between ideas, perspectives, and their place in the world. Through interdisciplinary studies and projects that integrate reading, writing, math, science, and social studies, your child will gain the skills to communicate, collaborate, and think critically.
Joyful Challenges. Purposeful Learning.
Whether building structures in math, staging historical simulations, or writing reflections on kindness, our students engage deeply with their learning. It’s not about memorizing facts it’s about making meaning.
Students begin to see that what they learn doesn’t just live in a textbook it lives in the world around them. When designing their own dog parks in geometry with our math specialist, they’re not just drawing, they’re thinking spatially, planning purposefully, and imagining how math shows up in everyday life.
Students don’t just study concepts; they experience them, and every project invites students to apply their knowledge in memorable ways Through it all, they discover that their ideas can shape their community, that their voices matter, and that what they learn can change the world around them
Every lesson is an invitation to engage, create, and connect—because when learning feels real, it lasts.
Rooted in purpose, infused with joy, and connected to real life, this is learning that sticks.
From brainstorming ballot topics to campaigning for their cause, students in second grade design and lead a full-scale election, inviting the entire school community to participate. They make signs, give speeches, create voting booths, and tally results, experiencing firsthand what it means to have a voice and use it. Through this project, students gain more than knowledge of civics and democracy; they develop confidence, collaboration skills, and a sense of responsibility to the world around them.
In middle school, students step into their fullest selves, bringing curiosity, voice, and vision to everything they do.They move from learning about the world to engaging with it, guided by teachers who challenge them to think deeply, care boldly, and lead with integrity. This is where students discover the power of who they are, and who they are becoming.
We build the foundation, and the future follows.
Middle School (Grades 5-8)
Here, middle school is more than a bridge between childhood and adolescence, it’s a launchpad. We’re not just preparing students for what comes next, we’re shaping who they’ll be when they get there. Here, students grow as scholars, leaders, and collaborators, equipped with the skills and confidence to navigate a complex and changing world. Rooted in strong academics, real-world connection, and meaningful mentorship, middle school empowers students to engage deeply, ask big questions, and lead with heart. Your student won’t just find their voice— they’ll use it.
Middle schoolers at Episcopal Day go beyond mastering content, they learn to apply it. Whether they’re engineering and innovating in Maker Lab, exploring identity and perspective through in ELA, or analyzing real-world data in Algebra, students are invited to think critically and act thoughtfully. Through interdisciplinary projects, leadership opportunities, and guided exploration, students begin to see the world not as a set of problems to solve, but as a community they can serve.
Real Thinking. Real Purpose. Real World.
At Episcopal Day, the belief that learning should be active, relevant, and reflective extends across disciplines. In science, students engineer solutions to environmental challenges. In humanities, they analyze historical patterns and apply them to present-day issues. In the arts, they tell stories that build empathy and illuminate identity. And in every subject, they’re encouraged to ask questions, take risks, revise their thinking, and grow in confidence.
By the time students graduate, they’re not just ready for high school, they’re prepared to take what they’ve learned and use it in meaningful ways. They leave with the skills to solve problems, the mindset to keep learning, and the voice to make a difference.
Here, leadership isn’t limited to student council or special titles, it’s built into daily life Whether helping to facilitate a class discussion, mentoring younger students, or addressing our entire community during a Chapel Talk, our students practice leading with empathy humility, and courage everyday. They learn that leadership is about listening as much as speaking, and about lifting others as they grow
In our Leadership and Service classes, students across grade levels design and execute their own projects, addressing both local and global needs. These projects encourage students to reflect on their passions and how they can use them to make a difference in the world around them Whether they are creating awareness campaigns or organizing fundraising events, these opportunities allow students to apply what they’ve learned and see the direct impact of their leadership.
By engaging with others, across grade levels, backgrounds, and perspectives, students learn to lead not just for themselves, but for the good of all.
They begin to see themselves as stewards of their communities, now and in the future.
Our Maker Lab curriculum is more than just about learning the tools of the future; it’s about using those tools to address realworld challenges. From projects that tackle environmental issues like plastic pollution to creating solutions for natural disasters, our students engage in design challenges that have social relevance. By blending technology with social issues, our students not only gain technical skills but also develop empathy, learning that their creations can make a difference in the world. We prepare your student to think critically, innovate, and use their knowledge for good.
