Integrating discussions of identity and justice into our curriculum, building a safe and respectful community, and being in service to others. These goals will span all areas of our community life, from classroom lessons to school-wide initiatives, in order to empower all of us with the skills needed to navigate and challenge the inequities we see in our world

CORE COMPETENCIES FOR A THOUGHTFUL, INCLUSIVE COMMUNITY:

Self-Reflection & Bias Awareness

Students learn to examine their perspectives and recognize how identity and experience shape their worldview

Assuming Good Will

We foster a culture of trust by encouraging students to approach others with empathy and positive intent

Spectrum Thinking

Students are taught to move beyond blackand-white thinking and consider multiple perspectives with curiosity and respect.

Systems Thinking

Through interdisciplinary learning, students understand how relationships, patterns, and structures influence the world around them

Inclusive Language

We guide students in using respectful, identity-affirming language that fosters belonging and understanding

Conflict Resolution

Students develop skills to resolve conflict thoughtfully, using empathy, active listening, and clear communication.

These competencies aren’t treated as one-time lessons they’re lived and practiced every day Whether in classroom discussions, outdoor education, service projects, or chapel reflections, Episcopal Day students are empowered to think deeply, speak thoughtfully, and lead with heart

LEARNINGTHROUGHACTION Service

“The best leaders are those who take time to serve others.”

At Episcopal Day, leadership means making a difference. Through service learning units integrated into every grade, students explore what it means to be compassionate neighbors and agents of positive change. Each unit ends in a hands-on project that connects classroom learning to real-world impact. Our students’ footprints are visible across San Mateo and beyond, as they live out our school values through meaningful service.

Service LEARNING

ROOTED IN SAN MATEO, REACHING OUTWARD

Being in the heart of San Mateo allows our students to step beyond campus and engage directly with the world around them. These experiences create powerful links between academic learning and civic responsibility.

You’ll find Episcopal Day students:

Testing creek water and exploring pollution at San Mateo Creek

Cleaning up Central Park and learning about environmental impact

Organizing donation drives for Samaritan House

Reading with senior neighbors at the Peninsula Regent These moments build empathy, leadership, and a lifelong sense of purpose.

Partnership with Purpose

At Episcopal Day, we believe education is most powerful when home and school work hand in hand. From day one, our campus buzzes with energy, performances, assemblies, field trips, and special events, all enriched by the time and talents of our parent and guardian community.

Volunteer opportunities are coordinated through the Day School Parents’ Association (DSPA), led by a dedicated committee that meets monthly to support school life and build community.

Parent involvement at Episcopal Day isn’t just appreciated it’s foundational When families engage, students witness firsthand what leadership and service look like in action.
