DECEMBER 2025/ JANUARY 2026

Dr. Shaun Ross got his dream job. What happens next matters more.

Dr. Shaun Ross got his dream job. What happens next matters more.
When Shaun Ross starts his new job on Jan. 5, 2026, the year behind him will be hard to forget. Not only did he defend his doctoral thesis and learn that it would be published, but he also became the next superintendent of Oklahoma’s third-largest public school system.
Not a bad way to round out a year, especially for a guy who was a self-described “bad student.”
“I was not the best student in the world,” Ross said, noting that he comes from a service-oriented family. “But I always had people in my corner, so finding an opportunity to give back was critical.”
The son of educators, his mother taught English in Amarillo, Texas, for 30 years. His father was also a teacher and later became an administrator. After moving to Colorado, the family settled in Oklahoma, and his parents signed on with Oklahoma City Public Schools (OKCPS), where Ross would later find himself, as well.
Ross is currently the senior executive director of support accountability for OKCPS, overseeing everything from federal programs to student services and technology – the parts of a school that aren’t necessarily instructional, but people definitely notice if something goes wrong. It’s a role he’s had for about seven months.
Ross, who holds a doctorate in educational administration from Arkansas State University, is married to his wife of 15 years. Together, they have two boys – Grayson, 11, and Landon, 8 – who are both “phenomenal” and keep him grounded.
“When I was working on my doctorate, I didn’t start that work until after my boys went to bed,” he said. “It added about 20 pounds, but it afforded me the opportunity to be a dad. I make it a point not to lose sight of what’s important.”
And as for his new role, what’s most important to him now is to listen … then lead.
Coming from a brick-and-mortar school district with defined boundaries to now leading a statewide school system, he said he understands there will be a bit of a learning curve, but emphasized his first obligation is to listen, then guide.

After listening and learning come the deposits – the work of building the kind of trust you can eventually draw upon.
“It’s depositing in people, inspiring people, growing people, so that when the time comes, you can make that withdrawal,” he said. “I wasn’t hired because I have all the answers. I believe I was hired because I can help us get to those answers through a collective push.”
When Ross looks at Epic, he doesn’t see controversy. He sees opportunity and understands every school district has chapters of its past it would handle differently.
“I think if you took the time, you would find skeletons in every school district’s closet,” he said. “If you look for the bad, you’re going to find it.”
Instead, he is focusing on the fact that, even with its complex and, at times, controversial history, Epic is filling a void for so many
Oklahoma families that simply cannot be met by a traditional public school.
What stands out most to Ross is how Epic serves students who might not thrive in a traditional school setting – especially with its Pathways program, which gives 21-to 30-year-olds the chance to earn a high school diploma, not a GED. He called it a “game changer,” while noting that the flexibility of the school’s blended model is just one of many reasons that some 30,000 families chose it.
“If you’re not thinking that this [Epic] is a viable option, you have not been paying attention,” he said.
As Ross steps into his new role, his driving educational principle remains fixed: “Do whatever it takes.”
“If a kid doesn’t understand a concept, you work it a different way until they get it,” he said. “Kids are kids regardless. What’s different is the starting line.”

Stay connected with all the exciting opportunities happening at Epic. From upcoming events to unique field trips, our Event and Field Trips page is your go-to resource for what’s next. Visit the page regularly to stay informed and make sure you don’t miss a chance to be part of the experiences that bring our school community together.
Students who read regularly tend to be more successful across all subjects. In fact, kids who read for just 20 minutes a day can encounter approximately 1.8 million words per year, thereby building their vocabulary, imagination, and critical thinking.
We’re thrilled to announce our school-wide Scholastic Book Fair! This is your chance to explore amazing books, discover new favorites and fuel your love of reading.

Santa Fe Ave., Oklahoma City, OK). This beloved event has become one of the highlights of our school year. It is so popular, in fact, that this year we’re expanding it into two shows to give everyone a chance to shine!
Afternoon Show (1:30-4 p.m.): Enjoy performances and artwork from our kindergarten through 7th-grade students. Expect adorable acts, creative energy and tons of heart!
Evening Show (5:30-8 p.m.): Our 8th–12th-grade students take the stage with inspiring performances and advanced artistry that will leave you amazed.
Both shows feature incredible student talent, stunning visual art displays, and a welcoming atmosphere for families and friends to celebrate creativity together. Admission is FREE, and everyone is invited!
Come support our talented students and experience an unforgettable day filled with music, art and Epic pride!

The Special Olympics is for students 8 and up who qualify as having an intellectual disability. We practice and complete our programs throughout the school year in the OKC and Tulsa areas. If you are already actively participating in Epic Special Olympics, you do not need to fill this form out for the spring semester, as your student will automatically be included in communications regarding practices and competitions.
If you are unsure if your student qualifies or have any questions, reach out to lauren.williams@epiccharterschools.org.
Go Comets!

Real talk on gratitude in the age of emojis.
Let’s be honest. The word “gratitude” sometimes feels like a forced holiday activity (“Everyone say one thing you’re thankful for!” cue collective groan). But real gratitude isn’t cheesy or complicated — and it actually works.
The Science (Without the Snooze)
Research continues to prove what Grandma always said: being thankful is good for you.
• People who practice gratitude regularly sleep better, stress less, and feel happier overall (Harvard Health, 2023).
• Gratitude can boost motivation and focus — yes, even for students (UC Davis Study, Emmons & McCullough).
• Even sending or receiving a small thankyou increases oxytocin (the “feel-good” brain chemical).
So that “thanks ” in chat? It actually matters.
Gratitude That Works in a Virtual World
Online doesn’t mean disconnected. Try these easy, low-effort ideas:
• Gratitude Shout-Outs: End class or a family dinner with “one thing or one person that made your day better.”
• Emoji Appreciation: “” for teamwork, “ ” for great ideas, or “” for someone’s creativity.
• Digital Thank-You Wall: Create a shared space (Padlet, Jamboard or Google Doc) where students or families can drop quick thank-yous. (Bonus: it’s way cuter than a group text.)
Cold and flu season is here, but a few simple habits can go a long way in keeping your family healthy and learning all season long:
• Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
• Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or your elbow.
• Stay home when sick to rest and avoid spreading germs.
• Stay hydrated and eat balanced meals to support your immune system. Get your flu shot—it’s one of the best defenses against illness.

The colder months bring holiday celebrations, new year excitement, and— unfortunately—more germs! Here are some ways to help your family stay healthy this winter:
• Dress for the weather – Layers, hats, and gloves help keep everyone warm and comfortable.
• Wash hands often – Especially after being in public spaces or around others who are sick.
• Rest & recover – A good night’s sleep helps your immune system stay strong.
• Eat balanced meals – Include fruits, vegetables and plenty of water, even when it’s cold outside.
