Boost Your Sales Up, Up, Up

ith the football season now well underway, so are the big TV promotions for watching the games in all their splendor.

These will grow over the coming weeks before reaching a fever pitch before the Super Bowl.

I have no doubt these are effective promos — why else would we keep seeing them year after year — but they only appeal to one type of consumer. Where is the on-screen event that appeals to a wider demographic — a familyfriendly hit that can get everyone in the house behind adding a theater to their home?

To paraphrase Die Hard, “You asked for a miracle, I give you KPop Demon Hunters.”

Even if you have not seen the movie on Netflix, where it premiered this past June, you have probably seen or heard some elements as it spread across pop culture. In short, KPop Demon Hunters is an animated film about a KPop girl group named Huntrix who tours the world thrilling their fans and destroying any demons they come across — which is a lot.

Technically speaking, the movie is a marvel.

The animation is by Sony Pictures Animation, the same studio who produced the excellent Spider-Verse films, and incorporates many of the dazzling techniques from those movies that look great in the Dolby Vision HDR version.

The movie also includes a glorious Dolby Atmos mix, prompting a thread on the Reddit Home Theater forum called “Now hear me out.

Watch KPop Demon Hunters” that began with, “This movie that gave my Atmos system the best workout and finally blew my wife’s socks off. She humored my speaker upgrade, but after that movie she is sold.”

The thread has 112 responses, with some recommending other films, but most supporting the original poster’s take on the movie.

KPop Demon Hunters has been on the Netflix Top 10 lists for 16 weeks and counting, with over 18,100,000 views. That doesn’t even count the number of views KDH had when it was released briefly in theaters as Netflix moved to capitalize on its success.

I know what you are thinking: “It’s been out since June, and more than 18 million people have already seen it. The horse has left the barn.”

What we have are 18 million people who think they have seen KPop Demon Hunters, because, as

you well know, they have not truly experienced it until they’ve seen it in a magnificent home theater that you have created. Or media room, but I should mention that Netflix also created a sing-along version that is available to stream that just begs for a soundproofed, dedicated room with a door that can be shut.

While I have no insider information, it is likely that Sony will release a 4K Blu-ray DVD edition as it did with the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and The Mitchells vs. The Machines, so you can be on the lookout for that and time those promos effectively.

It has been some time since I can recall such a popular film or TV show that can appeal to men, women, and kids, and practically demands family time. Fire up that demo room and KPop Demon Hunter can be the hook that gets them in the door and signing on the line.

Oh, for those that haven’t seen it, the “up, up, up” in the headline is the from the chorus of one of the catchy songs from the movie. For those who have seen it and were trying to get rid of the earworm I just put back in there, sorry, but I share your affliction.

Your Voicemail Might Be Costing You Business How to fix it so you and your company sound more professional, more human, and worth calling back.

We’ve all been there. You’re ready to call a new vendor, contractor, or referral — phone in hand, excitement high — and then bam, you’re hit with the dreaded: “The voicemail box is full. Goodbye.”

Cue the sad trombone and the instant mental pivot from “let’s do business” to “on to the next.” Because, let’s face it, no one wants to chase someone they’re about to pay.

In the world of residential technology integration, we pride ourselves on being ahead of the curve with personalized, high-touch experiences.

Yet, too often we forget that first impressions don’t start with a handshake or a showroom demo. They start with the little things. Like voicemail.

A First Impression You Didn’t Know You Were Making Whether you’re the business owner, office manager, salesperson, or service tech, your voicemail greeting is often the first impression a potential client or partner gets.

A generic, robotic, “You have reached 555-123-4567” says, “I didn’t have time to bother.” Worse? A full mailbox. That says, “I’m disorganized, too busy for you, or simply not paying attention.”

None of those inspires confidence — especially in an industry where precision, responsiveness, and attention to detail are non-negotiable.

According to Salesforce’s 2024 State of the Connected Customer report, 78% of customers say they’ll switch to a competitor after one bad experience. And, yes, a bad voicemail experience counts.

Make It Personal (and Human) A great voicemail doesn’t need to be long. It just needs to sound like you — a competent, approachable human being who gives a damn.

Example: “Hi, this is Josh from Connected Spaces. Sorry I missed your call. I’m probably sorting out complex network infrastructure or programming some scenes to make a client’s home perform exactly the way they want it to. Please leave your name, number, and how I can help, and I’ll call you back as soon as I can.”

That ten-second message tells a caller: • You’re human • You care • You’re good at what you do • You’ll call back Boom. Trust established.

Even better? Update your message seasonally or when you’re traveling: “Hey, this is Sarah with Premier Integration Co. I’m out of the office this week at CEDIA Expo, learning about the latest in smart home tech. Leave me a message and I’ll get back to you when I return.”

Now you’ve communicated availability and subtly reinforced your expertise and industry engagement.

Voicemail Jail: Avoid at All Costs Two things that instantly kill credibility: 1. “The voicemail box is full.”

2. “This user has not set up their voicemail.”

Those are the business equivalent of a “Closed” sign taped to your front door. When someone calls and can’t leave a message, they don’t get warm fuzzies — they get frustrated. And they will call someone else.

If you’re too busy to manage voicemails, systemize it: • Set a daily check time. Block this time on your calendar.

• Turn on transcription. Read messages on the go.

• Delegate. Have someone on your team monitor the main line.

• Offer an alternative. “Can’t wait? Text me at this number.”

Small moves. Big perception shift.

When Voice and Brand Align Voicemail isn’t just a utility, it’s a brand touchpoint. It’s your audio business card. Ask yourself: Does your message sound friendly, competent, and confident, or rushed, muffled, and disengaged?

Try this exercise: Call your own voicemail from a different number.

What do you hear? Would you hire you?

If you have a team, check theirs, too. Better yet, create a simple company-wide voicemail standard, a short script that captures your tone and professionalism. Consistency doesn’t have to mean cookie-cutter; it just means cohesive.

Final Thought We spend countless hours perfecting client experiences, showroom lighting, and project documentation. Yet, the five minutes it takes to record a clear, friendly voicemail often gets overlooked. And that oversight can cost you real money. So, take five minutes today. Call your voicemail. Clear it. Update your greeting. Make it sound like you want to be called.

Remember: Referrals are gold, and reputation is everything. The smallest detail can make the biggest difference.

Also remember: It’s hard to say “yes” to your proposal if no one can leave you a message.

Be reachable. Be human. Be the kind of pro who always calls back.

And if you need help figuring out what to say? You know where to find me.

Just…maybe don’t let it go to voicemail.

VITAL BUSINESS TIPS

Your Business Isn't That Special… …and that's good news.

Fifteen months, a 750% profit improvement, and an exit valuation four times higher than the original offer. The kicker? It wasn't an integration company — it was a traffic control business. That’s a completely different industry, yet I used nearly the exact same business formulas that profitably scaled my integration company.

Here’s the uncomfortable truth: Your integration business isn’t nearly as unique as you think it is. And that's the best news you could hear.

The Great Excuse We see this pattern constantly. Someone's struggling with cash flow, can't hire the right people, or watches profit margins evaporate. We start talking about proven business fundamentals, and inevitably: “Yeah, but my business is different.”

The justifications come rapid-fire: We’re project-based, not servicebased. Our technology changes constantly. Our clients have unique expectations. Our [insert excuse here] makes traditional business principles irrelevant.

Here’s what's really happening: It's easier to claim uniqueness than admit you don't know how to run the business side of your business.

There's enormous shame around this admission. So, instead of being vulnerable and asking for help, integrators hide behind “my business is special.”

When you make yourself a “data point of one,” you don't have to compare yourself to anyone. You don't have to share your challenges. You don't have to admit you're struggling. And you don't have to ask for help from people in “different” industries.

That isolation is killing your growth.

Let me take you back to that traffic control company. When I started consulting with the owner, she was exhausted, ready to retire, and had already received a buyout offer. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't lifechanging either. She’d built a solid business over 15 years, but profits were inconsistent, operations were chaotic, and everything ran through her.

Sound familiar?

I pulled out the same framework I’d used to scale my integration business — the same financial metrics, operational dashboards, and leadership development approach. Nearly identical, just adapted to her specific context. Within 15 months, we’d improved profits by 750%. When she sold the business, the valuation was four times the original offer.

Yes, some things were different from a CI business. Traffic control projects are shorter than integration projects, so we could iterate and see results faster. The specific KPIs had different names. Crew utilization instead of technician efficiency, equipment deployment instead of equipment procurement. But the underlying business mechanics? Identical.

I use similar formulas to run VITAL, my coaching business, which is a completely different model. We're not selling products or managing projects, we’re delivering knowledge and transformation. Yet the fundamental business metrics that made me successful as an integrator and helped that traffic control company thrive work here, too.

What Actually IS Special About You Before you think I’m saying that nothing about your business matters, let me be clear: There are absolutely things that make you unique. You just need to be precise about what they are.

Your technical expertise IS unique and valuable. The way you solve complex integration challenges, your knowledge of emerging technologies, your ability to design systems that actually work — this differentiates you.

Your customer relationships ARE irreplaceable. The trust you've built, the way you understand your clients’ lifestyles, and your reputation in your market. These can't be replicated by someone following a manual.

Your specific market knowledge IS proprietary. You know your local builders, your regional preferences, your specific competitive landscape in ways no one else does. But here’s the critical distinction: These unique elements sit on top of universal business fundamentals. They’re not a replacement for them.

Making the Shift If you're ready to stop being special and start being successful, here are three actions for this month: 1.

Admit One Gap: Identify one business fundamental you’ve been avoiding. Write it down. Then tell your partner, a peer, or a mentor. Say it out loud: “I don’t know how to do this, and I need help.”

2. Steal Shamelessly: Find one successful business completely outside your industry, like a restaurant, a law firm, or a retail store. The type doesn't matter. Study one practice they've mastered. What’s one element you could adapt to your integration business? Remember: You’re not copying their work; you’re adopting their proven business fundamentals.

3. Measure What Matters: Pick three to five universal business metrics.

Start tracking them weekly. Then compare them to benchmarks from ANY industry. A healthy gross margin is a healthy gross margin, whether you're selling automation systems or artisanal cheese. If your numbers are off, the solutions exist. You just have to be willing to look beyond integration forums to find them.

Share your chosen metric and your commitment to tracking it with someone who will actually check in on you. We're far less likely to let others down than we are to let ourselves down. Use that human psychology to your advantage.

HOME THEATER

Excellence by Design It all starts with the project brief.

Every industry faces a choice: pursue “good enough,” or strive for excellence. That choice begins with the brief. To some, it may look like a checklist, but in truth, the project brief is the first act of design — a foundation upon which excellence is built.

Private cinema has evolved. Decades ago, the field was split: some rooms were beautiful but poor performers, while others were acoustically accurate but otherwise uninspired, black boxes that no one wanted to linger in. Today, clients expect both. They want rooms that are technically exacting and aesthetically compelling. That is an objective that requires more than specifications, standards, and equipment lists; it requires a shared understanding of desires and possibilities best discovered, defined, and documented in a project brief.

What Belongs in a High-Value Brief?

Objectives in the client’s words. A strong brief doesn’t start with specifications; it starts with the client. Ask questions like, What would success look like when we hand you the keys? One client once told me: “It would be a special place that draws my family together…and I’m willing to invest more to get that right.” That answer reframed the entire project.

The brief we created from it ensured we weren’t simply delivering a theater, but a space of connection, built to a higher purpose.

Experience definitions that translate into design requirements. We use plain language first, then map it to engineering. A client may say, “I want to catch every word at low volume,” or, “I don’t want to rely on captions,” or, “dark scenes should hold detail.” Those phrases may sound simple, but they imply a quiet noise floor, accurate acoustics, loudspeakers that resolve nuance at low levels yet perform cleanly at reference, and screens suiting the environment. A good brief makes those connections explicit.

Primary seats and use patterns. Every room has compromises. A 24-seat theater may have only 12 true “prime” seats. That’s not a flaw; it’s reality. A well-written brief documents how many perfect seats are required and how many acceptable ones surround them. That clarity guides both budget and design, protecting client expectations.

Aesthetics integrated with performance. Today’s best private cinemas are both beautiful and accurate, but that balance doesn’t happen by accident. The brief should establish early that finishes, millwork, and lighting will be coordinated with acoustics, not bolted on afterward.

When everyone signs on to that principle from the start, the results are consistently extraordinary.

Standards as reference points, not ceilings. Industry guidelines such as RP-22 provide a valuable baseline. But the brief should state whether the goal is to meet or to exceed those standards. Clients don’t come to us for “average.” They want the extraordinary.

The Hidden Costs of Skipping the Brief When the brief is ignored or treated as optional, problems multiply.

Assumptions replace discovery. Without a thorough brief, projects default to assumptions or unclarified goals. This is how opportunities to

delight are missed or how critical desires, like immersive music listening, get overlooked. Many clients don’t even realize that a well-designed private cinema can be the finest environment for 2-channel and immersive music, surpassing dedicated listening rooms. Without discovery and documentation, those opportunities remain hidden.

Compromises go unpriced and unowned. Compromise is not a dirty word; it is part of every project. But when compromises aren’t made explicit, they become liabilities. If we trade a few decibels of sound pressure to meet a budget or reduce the number of prime seats to accommodate a design feature, those tradeoffs must be documented in the brief to be approved by the client and not buried in assumptions.

Intermediaries: Alignment by Design Perhaps the greatest risk of all comes when we are not speaking directly with the client but through intermediaries. This could be a builder, an architect, or a client representative. Their intentions are often good, but their priorities are not always the client’s priorities.

One representative may define the “best result” as saving the most money; another may see it as creating the greatest experience. Those are legitimate but very different objectives. If left unchecked, they can steer a project away from what the client actually wants.

The danger is twofold. First, opportunities to delight the client can be lost before they’re ever presented. If the representative filters the conversation, the client may never learn that their theater could also be the finest music-listening space in the home, or that acoustical design can elevate a room from functional to extraordinary. Second, compromises may be accepted on the client’s behalf without a full understanding of what is being given up. That is not fair to the client, and it is not safe for the design team.

This is why the brief is indispensable. It provides a written, agreed-upon record of the client’s actual objectives. It requires that decisions, especially compromises, be documented and routed back for client approval. That ensures alignment and preserves the integrity of the design mandate.

I have always said: Let the client make the final call. It’s their home, their investment, their experience. Yes, they are busy people, and representatives serve an important role in protecting their time. But the responsibility of the design team is to give the client the dignity of informed choice. The brief makes this possible by putting the conversation in writing, ensuring the client remains the ultimate authority, even if much of the day-to-day communication flows through others.

Once discovery is complete, the brief becomes a design mandate. It is not just notes; it is a professional commitment. In it, we present the client’s goals in their own words and outline how our design, engineering, and construction plan will deliver those goals. Only then do we proceed into engineering and coordination. At that point, everyone — client, representatives, and design team — shares the same understanding, documented and signed. That clarity gives the project momentum and prevents misunderstandings down the road.

Overall Sales by Month As much as it continuously surprises me, I am a “glass-half-full” kind of person, but I think even the most pessimistic among us could see some good news when looking at the Overall Sales by Month chart in Figure 1.

Let’s pick it up at the beginning, with January 2024’s $50 million-plus in sales compared to 2025’s near $70 million. Willits points out that this data has been normalized, meaning that it only includes dealers who have used Portal.io over the past two years, roughly 1500 integrators. It does not include any company that joined Portal.io after the end of December 2023.

While we will stay away from conjecture during this exercise, Willits does note tangible reasons for the increase in revenue.

“The average job size is growing,” he says. “The dealers on our platform are selling more, and they’re growing. Again, this is normalized data, so this is the same group of dealers. You can see they grew from $54 million in January 2024 to $67 million in January 2025. They continued their growth throughout 2025 at about the same rate as 2024; the gap between the blue and the gray is consistent. There’s a bump in February 2025, which is when tariffs were first announced. It’s hard to draw a corollary here specifically, but it fits the narrative — close the business before prices go up. It levels back out in March. The growth slowed in June and July.

Summer year-to-year usually sees a dip, so this isn’t surprising, but the recovery through August and September has been really strong.

“Plus, in addition to growing the size of the jobs, the number of projects also increased. This year, in the first quarter,

our dealers averaged seven jobs per month, and in the second quarter, they hit eight jobs on average. The average in the third quarter is also eight. In the last two years, this group has gone from an entire quarter average of six projects per month to eight projects per month that they’re winning.”

Product Data As we turn to product categories, the main ones are featured in Figure 2. The category charts have also been normalized, but only for 2025, so they include dealers who joined by the end of December 2024, around 2000 in total.

Looking at Figure 2, it looks pretty close to versions from previous years, complete with a summertime dip that hits most categories.

Speakers again take the top spot, followed again by televisions. But then things get interesting.

“Lighting control overtook receivers and amps,” says Willits. “TVs in

aggregate are still higher than lighting controls, but lighting controls surpassed TVs in January, March, May, and, though it doesn’t show in this chart, September. And it’s not like TVs are declining — lighting control is growing pretty significantly.”

On the secondary categories, shown in Figure 3, window treatments and their big bell curve leap out of the data. Likewise, power management has had a stronger showing this year compared to last. The other categories are similar to last year’s chart, with doorbell and intercom running along the bottom, but with $500,000 in sales, that’s not a bad lower rung.

Figure 4 takes a dedicated look at the lighting industry, which Figure 2 already showed to be in a growth period. From January 2024 through February 2025, it

seems to have its ups and downs, but from Spring on, it takes off. In March 2025, the category hit over $1 million in sales. It dips in June, but March, April, May, July, and August are all over $1 million. And in August, it goes sky high.

Sales rose 7.4% year-over-year, and demand remains robust, proving that homeowners continue to prioritize connected living experiences.

Proposals and Contracts: Pipelines Stay Full

Proposal activity climbed 7% versus H1 2024, showing no sign of a slowdown. Signed contracts grew 6.9%, with homeowners showing no hesitation to move forward on projects despite tariff-driven price fears. Seasonality looks normal, and demand remains strong, which is a healthy sign for the remainder of the year.

In terms of the values of proposals versus contracts, it was a tale of two cities, so to speak. While proposal values rose by double digits, contracted values barely nudged higher, further widening the proposal-to-contract gap. This suggests: • Clients are trimming budgets to focus on essentials.

• Integrators may be presenting “stretch” proposals that inspire, but don’t always close at full scope.

“If I add lighting fixtures data for September, it’s higher than where August ended up,” adds Willits. “Not by much — it’s very similar to August, but it’s $1.8 million. So, we’re close to $2 million, and at the beginning of the year, it was around $750,000.”

The other category spotlighted this year is on projectors and screens, which can be seen in Figure 5. With TVs remaining dominant and coming in larger sizes, as well as more video wall options entering the market, it seemed worthwhile to check in on this venerable, typically steady category.

In 2025, it was a much more volatile time for projectors and screens, and, although 2024 was more consistent, 2025 brought in considerably more money, with a rise in July that continued throughout September.

“You can see the June dip, which we always get, and this year also likely saw some economic impact that essentially resolved in July,” says Willits. “But that growth rate — the gap in the graph — stayed consistent for that entire quarter. It jumped up in July, indicating a higher growth rate in this category for this most recent quarter, compared to the first two quarters of 2025.”

Of course, won proposals are just one piece of the puzzle. To help check our work, we asked Cynthia Menna, VP and general manager, AV, for ADI | Snap One, about the product trends and use cases the distributor is seeing.

“In today’s increasingly connected world, the demand for robust networking solutions has never been greater,” says Menna. “As more people work from home and rely on home offices, a stable and high-speed network is essential for productivity and seamless communication. Beyond work, households are embracing digital lifestyles that include online gaming, streaming family entertainment, and smart surveillance for security.

“All these innovations depend on a reliable network infrastructure that can support multiple devices and applications simultaneously, making networking a foundational element of modern living.”

Like networking, outdoor spaces are another area that grew to prominence during Covid, and, according to Menna, remains popular.

“Outdoor spaces are increasingly being treated as true extensions of the home,” she says. “As a result, integrated solutions such as automation systems, lighting controls, and voice-activated routines are becoming standard features that deliver greater convenience, energy efficiency, and enhanced security.”

Another continuing trend is integrators expanding into light commercial and semi-commercial environments. “More and more residential clients are seeking commercial-grade AV solutions, so the once-clear line between

residential and commercial AV is becoming increasingly blurred,” says Menna. “This convergence is reshaping expectations, design standards, and integration strategies across both sectors.”

CI staples also remain vital: “Audio continues to evolve, driven by demand for weatherproof outdoor kits, discreet ‘invisible’ installations that complement design and aesthetic preferences of residential spaces, along with customizable, immersive sound experiences,” explains Menna.

“Smart home projects increasingly bundle sensors, remote management, and seamless integration with access control and surveillance systems.

“Finally, we’re also seeing integrators continuing to win share in this dynamic and evolving broader economic climate through differentiation.

“Taken together, these proposals reveal a market that is both navigating challenges successfully and accelerating innovation, driven by a clear shift toward smarter, more seamless, and lifestyle-centric technologies.”

What’s It Mean?

Of course, just because the industry appears to be robust doesn’t necessarily mean it is in your area or your business. As with most research, results may vary. It is the hope that your businesses are seeing the same kind of success this data represents, but, if not, at least you can see that not only is the demand there, but so are the areas where it is concentrated most, providing solid intelligence on where to steer your efforts in 2026.

oday’s tech has to work flawlessly and should look good while performing, or not make an appearance at all.

Homeowners and interior designers, knowing that tech is an integral part of the project, are on the hunt for devices that enhance the right look.

“We continue to see a steady increase in design-driven projects and designer-led plans,” says Noah Kaplan, founder and president, Leon.

“Many of our projects now include multiple highly specified products, and we frequently receive repeat requests for the same spaces. These often involve disguised solutions, such as our Media Decor Moving Art Screens, statement pieces like the Studio Frame for Sony Bravia with a matching FrameBar, or Tonecase options that stylize a Sonos soundbar or speaker, allowing technology to integrate seamlessly with the overall interior design.”

The requests are coming from designers and architects. “This year, more dealers have reported that designers are directly requesting specific

solutions such as a FrameBar to match a Samsung Frame TV,” Kaplan says. “Dealers notice these design-focused solutions and are seeking the complementary products to satisfy those designer specifications. We’ve also seen dealers joining our network because of these dealer-designer collaborations, entering our ecosystem to fulfill these precise requests.”

Wall-Smart consistently receives requests for hidden devices, as designers and homeowners want to eliminate wall clutter and maintain clean, elegant spaces. “This demand has been growing steadily, especially in the luxury residential segment, where aesthetics and minimalism are key priorities,” says company CEO and co-founder, Galia Ben-Dor. “Requests come from both professionals, such as interior designers and architects who integrate concealment solutions early in the planning stages, and from an increasingly educated market of homeowners and clients who know to ask for clean, flush installations.

“Wall-Smart is entirely built around making technology disappear. This is what we do. Whether it’s a standard model or a custom-made solution, our design and engineering teams continually rethink and refine products to meet aesthetic needs. New products are constantly emerging to address evolving design trends.”

And the demand is growing quickly, notes Mark Cichowski, business development, Stealth Acoustics. “The rise of design-led projects has put greater emphasis on blending technology seamlessly into the environment, particularly in high-end residential spaces,” he says. “‘Stealthy’ and hidden devices have been on the rise for years, but many designers and architects still don’t know what they don’t know when it comes to the full range of possibilities available to them.”

Cichowski explains that when a Stealth dealer asks a designer, architect, or homeowner whether they’d like the option of invisible speakers, it often comes as a surprise. “Many have never seen or heard them in action,” he says. “Awareness of this technology is still just scratching the surface. Recently, Brian Azzano, Stealth Acoustics VP, attended a design event where around 25 designers were present; only two had ever heard of invisible speakers. After experiencing the Stealth demo, the group was amazed. It really shows how much opportunity there is to educate and

inspire this audience. We fully expect this trend to keep accelerating as the lines between technology and design continue to blur. The desire for clean, minimal spaces isn’t going away, and Stealth is uniquely positioned to deliver on that vision.”

Consumer demand for design-centered residential products has been steadily growing, agrees Nexus 21 CEO Cory Lovett. “While the desire to conceal televisions when not in use remains one of the most popular requests, homeowners are increasingly looking for other innovative ‘conceal and reveal’ solutions that blend function with design,” he says.

“Recently, we were approached by a high-end custom furniture maker who wanted to collaborate on several new additions to their product line.

These designs, inspired by requests from their own clients, highlight the expanding role of discreet technology in everyday living.

“Among the concepts under development are motorized, lighted vanity mirrors that rise at the touch of a button and disappear when not in use.

Also on the list are desks with hidden monitors, allowing workspaces to transform seamlessly between digital and traditional uses, nightstands with concealed compartments that elevate to reveal essential or medical devices, while keeping them hidden when not needed, and bar furniture with adjustable tops that lift to reveal elegantly hidden storage for bottles and glassware. These examples underscore a growing trend: Technology is no longer just about performance, but about how gracefully it integrates into the home. Consumers are seeking solutions that deliver convenience, preserve aesthetics, and adapt to the multifunctional ways people live today.

“Designers and architects bring us some of the most creative requests, and we enjoy working with these highly skilled professionals,” adds Lovett.

“Our team collaborates closely with client-partners’ design groups to gain a clear understanding of the end customer’s needs and aspirations. From there, we assist in seamlessly integrating our motorized systems into their designs. We serve a wide and diverse range of partners, including luxury custom furniture makers, architectural millwork firms, specialty cabinet shops, yacht builders, and vehicle customization specialists. These innovators are continually reimagining their designs to meet the evolving Lutron lighting, shades, and keypads can enhance the look of any room.

In Response to the Demand “Pop-up lift systems offer remarkable versatility, supporting a wide range of applications, from discreetly concealing a television within custom cabinetry to raising hidden appliances from beneath kitchen countertops,” Lovett says. “Another growing trend is the use of flip-down lift technology to camouflage TVs within the ceiling, allowing the screen to appear only when needed and vanish entirely when not in use.”

One of the fastest-emerging categories is the Art TV, with models such as the Samsung Frame TV leading the way. “To support this trend, we developed a specialty motorized mount designed specifically for Art TVs,” says Lovett. “At just four-and-a-half inches deep, it is the thinnest motorized wall mount available, fitting entirely within a standard-depth wall. This preserves the illusion of a framed artwork while giving homeowners the ability to extend the TV outward and pivot it to different viewing angles, all at the touch of a button. When viewing ends, the system glides the TV back into place, seamlessly restoring the appearance of a hanging piece of art.”

At Stealth, the main focus is on helping partners demonstrate the solutions and showcase what’s possible. “Once people experience the sound and see the seamless finish, there’s rarely much convincing needed,” Cichowski says. “In terms of design, we’re constantly evolving. We’re now on the eighth generation of our product line and have been manufacturing Stealth speakers for more than 20 years. We take pride in leading the invisible speaker category and driving awareness, even among competitors.

“Every model in the Stealth range is engineered for seamless integration, so the entire lineup supports this growing design trend. Installation is relatively simple. The key is a skilled drywall professional, as that’s the most critical part of achieving a perfect finish. The speaker itself mounts directly into the studs, unlike traditional in-wall models that use ‘dog-ear’ clamps to grip the drywall. Once installed and painted over, the result is completely invisible, yet sonically breathtaking.”

Another fast-growing area is Wi-Fi access points, says Ben-Dor. “Traditionally hidden in basements or attics, they are now placed in central spaces for better signal, but no one wants to see them,” she says.

“Both in residential and commercial projects, concealment has become essential. Every Wall-Smart solution is engineered to maintain full device performance while achieving a fully flush and discreet look. This balance ensures that design never comes at the expense of functionality.”

“Leon has always led the way in creating design-centered products,” Kaplan says. “However, we’ve recognized that it’s not always about hiding the technology; it’s about crafting products that are thoughtfully designed to harmonize with a home’s aesthetics.”

To support the growing collaboration between integrators and designers, Leon now offers multiple high-design finish options, giving dealers and designers the flexibility to create custom solutions. “This could include natural finishes such as walnut or oak, or custom paint matches to align with a specific design vision,” he adds. “This approach allows us to offer products that feel both high-tech and thoughtfully integrated into the home environment. The Mera Sound Sconce, for example, was developed in collaboration with Mera Studio architects. Their goal was to reimagine the speaker, shifting it from an afterthought to a forethought,

while also providing illumination and complementing the interior design of the space.”

In terms of demand, for Lutron, there are two specific areas to note: HomeWorks keypads and automated shading solutions. “Some homeowners want their technology to be hidden while others want to celebrate their beautiful form factors and design and treat them like jewelry on the wall,” Andresko says. “Lutron offers wall controls in numerous styles and finishes — and even custom solutions — so that no matter what interior design style you are working with, Lutron devices will unobtrusively work quietly in the background while elevating the room’s design.

“We will continue to listen to our customers’ feedback and requests for new product styles. Lutron recently launched a new minimalist keypad style called Alisse. Its timeless elegance is inspired by traditional forms and hand-finished in solid brass. We also launched a new keypad called Aviena. It’s an evocative heritage design featuring a weighted mechanical toggle and hand-finished in solid brass.”

A designer favorite from Lutron’s shading collection is the Palladiom Wire-Free Shades. “Palladiom wire-free shades are automated, exposed roller shades that operate wirelessly using D-cell batteries, offering precise daylight control and a refined, minimal profile for sophisticated homes,” Andresko explains. “These shades feature hand-finished aluminum brackets, a streamlined design that does not require a fascia or pocket, and a whisper-quiet motor. BRAVIA 8 II QD-OLED and BRAVIA Theater Quad T here have been several moments when I have experienced a generational improvement in display picture quality, where I thought, “That’s it. It just can’t get any better.”

The first time was when I experienced HDTV for the first time. (Anyone else remember the “Texas Wild” video loop that played on nearly every display at CEDIA in the late ’90s?) Another was when I saw a closed-room demo of a prototype Pioneer Elite Plasma that had black levels so black that it produced an audible gasp from the room of media in attendance. Another was a 10,000-nit, 85-inch 8K HDR prototype Sony bowed in 2018.

Then there is this new Sony BRAVIA 8 II, Sony’s latest-generation QD-OLED panel that was recently awarded the 2025 “King of TV” title from the annual Value Electronics shootout. The QD stands for “Quantum Dots,” which uses a blue OLED light source that passes through a layer of quantum dots, delivering a wider color gamut and increased brightness. This M2 panel comes with several significant upgrades over the previous flagship A95L, as well as a significant performance upgrade over the “traditional” BRAVIA 8 OLED, which remains current in the lineup.

a Sony media event in New York, where it was being demonstrated next to Sony’s BVM-HX3110 $30,000 Mini-LED professional studio grading monitor, it is difficult to imagine how it could be improved, but I was anxious to see how it performed in my home.

To complete the review, Sony also sent its BRAVIA Theater Quad (technically, HT-A9M2) speaker system, a wireless, four-speaker, 4.0.4 configuration that offers a unique alternative to a soundbar audio system.

First Impressions Sony updates the look of its panels regularly, and this BRAVIA 8 II features the company’s premium “One Slate” design, which has the thinnest of black bezels along the sides and top, with a slightly thicker trim at the bottom that looks minimalist and sleek, and an overall slimmer chassis than the XR80. The TV features a dual-height stand that can either be dropped nearly to tabletop level (technically 0.5 inches above) or raised 3 inches to allow the bottom of the screen to clear a soundbar.

If wall-mounting, the TV utilizes a 300 x 300 VESA pattern.

It's worth noting that the BRAVIA 8 II Series only features two sizes, 55- and 65-inch,

and Sony has no current plans to expand the size range. If you need a larger size, Sony will continue to offer the XR77A95L, introduced in 2024. This display is the basis for Sony’s professional client monitor (FWD-A95L) used in post-production, visual effects, and on-set monitoring around the world.

The Theater Quad speaker system comes in a box that looks like it could hold a 40-inch TV and was surprisingly heavy. Besides the four speakers, there is also the main control box, and shelf- and wall-mount hardware.

The four speakers are all visually identical, measuring 11 1/2 x 10 7/8 x 2 1/4 inches (H x W x D) and weighing just under six pounds. They are covered in a neutral grey fabric that is definitely more décor-friendly than the standard black.

Since all of the speakers look the same, there are labels on the bottom identifying where they need to be placed, i.e., “Front L” or “Rear R.”

Meet the New “King” Video processing has always been the not-sosecret sauce behind Sony’s terrific picture quality, and this display continues to use the XR Processor, but it's been refined to take advantage of the BRAVIA 8 II’s capabilities.

The XR Processor is tasked with improving picture quality and has been steadily improved since it was introduced in 2021. Displays featuring this tech have also won the “King of TV” shootout every year since it was launched, so clearly there is a correlation.

The XR Processor uses AI when analyzing images, processing and enhancing content similarly to how our brain and eyes see the real world. As displays become increasingly larger, this kind of processing becomes more important, as we are focusing on parts of the screen rather than the entire screen. The processor uses Scene

Recognition to split an image into hundreds of thousands of on-screen elements, identifying objects as humans would see them, then prioritizing processing to those focal point items.

These prioritized items are cross-analyzed for color, contrast, brightness, and motion against a massive database of images, using Depth Mapping to further enhance images by applying processing to produce the sharpest, brightest, clearest images possible. All accomplished for all 8-million-plus pixels in every video frame.

For 2025, Sony has added AI Super Resolution to its XR clear image processing for finer detail and noise reduction.

As mentioned, the BRAVIA 8 II uses the latestgeneration QD-OLED panel, which is responsible for an increase in brightness. By the numbers, this panel is 50% brighter than the BRAVIA 8 OLED and 25% brighter than last year’s A95L QD-OLED panel. Due to this extra brightness, the BRAVIA 8 II achieves higher/larger color volume than the A95L, which is especially evident in HDR content and the BT.2020 color space. The BRAVIA 8 II is also more efficient, able to achieve higher peak brightness, along with better low-luminance and near-black performance, thanks to the combination of the new panel and XR processing working together, improving contrast.

TV Setup Like every Sony TV in recent memory, the BRAVIA 8 II is a Google TV running the Android 12 OS, meaning it needs to be “activated” and registered before it can do much of anything. This latest OS allows for individual and kids’ profiles, which allows individualization of layouts and provides specific recommendations based on what is watched. This was a cool feature, letting me keep my watch and recommendation list separate from my 19-year-old daughter’s. It also had 32 GB of onboard storage.

This TV features an Ambient Screensaver (art) mode that can utilize Google’s Gemini AI to create AI screen savers, and there is also a Google Home Control tab for smart home control directly from the TV’s side panel.

Both the TV and remote feature built-in microphones for voice control; however, the TV has a physical microphone on/off switch if you aren’t comfortable with it potentially listening.

The panel also includes Sony’s new Eco Dashboard 2, which lets you quickly access and change eco-related settings (power saving, ambient light sensor, panel shut off times, etc.), as well as check the display’s real-time and historic power consumption.

There are seven available picture modes.

It retains the Vivid (“Torch”) mode, which “maximizes device and panel performance for Shopfront display” but which is so over-the-top with the BRAVIA 8 II’s brightness and color volume that it is virtually unwatchable for most content.

Most customers will probably prefer the Standard mode when watching things like broadcast TV or YouTube. The Professional mode most accurately reproduces the look of the BVM-HX3110 reference monitor, but I found it did this at the expense of brightness and pop; however, on really pristine content like Kaleidescape or UHD Blu-rays, this was my preferred go-to for critical viewing. The Cinema mode maintains the creator’s intent by utilizing an ambient light sensor to adjust color tones and adapt to room lighting, which was my preferred setting for non-Dolby Vision encoded streaming movie content. There is also a Calm setting that “reduces blue light output with softer colors and gentle contrast,” as well as Photo to enhance “the brightness, color depth, and sharpness of photos.” There is an IMAX Enhanced setting for any certified IMAX content.

The BRAVIA 8 II’s HDMI 3 and 4 inputs support HDMI 2.1 gaming features like 4K/120, VRR, ALLM, and SBTM (Source-based Tone Mapping), allowing the TV to communicate its HDR capabilities to the gaming device to optimize gaming picture quality.

Other connections include two USB ports, including one with 900mA output; a mini-jack connection that either serves as an optical audio output (adapter included) or a S-Center Speaker Input for use with a compatible Sony soundbar/ audio system; an RJ45 LAN connection; mini-jack

connections for both RS-232 and IR control; and an RF cable/antenna connection. The TV is Wi-Fi 6E compatible, and can connect to either 2.4, 5, or 6 GHz networks.

tonal differences in the mid and low frequencies between the front and rear speakers after they were wall-mounted, but this wasn’t noticeable when listening to real-world content.

Audio Setup Installing the Theater Quad speaker system is pretty straightforward; just place the four speaker modules in the most ideal locations and connect the Control Box to the TV’s eARC output. If you have a compatible Sony display — and I did! — you can also connect the included mini-jack cable to the S-Center connection between the box and display, which allows you to use the display’s speaker to increase the center-channel image.

The Control Box has an HDMI input that supports video formats 4K/120 and 8K HDR, Dolby Vision, and HDMI 2.1 gaming features such as VRR and ALLM. It also supports wireless music streaming via Spotify Connect, AirPlay 2, and Bluetooth 5.2, and decodes Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. Other than the style change of the speakers, the Quad benefits from an improved wireless protocol to communicate with the speakers, along with upgraded antennas/receivers with auto frequency hopping. The radio output power has also been enhanced by up to 2.5 times compared to the previous model. All of which is to ensure more stable communication between the control box and wireless speakers, and I never experienced any issues with dropouts.

There are four speakers per unit: a 2 3/8inch full-range driver, a 3 3/8- x 3 3/8-inch X-Balanced woofer, a 3/4-inch tweeter, and a 1 7/16- x 3 1/8-inch X-Balanced upfiring driver. All drivers are individually powered by 31.5 watts, making the total rated system power 504 watts.

Sony describes this as a 4.0.4 system and claims that its 360 Spatial Sound Mapping technology can create up to 12 phantom speakers around the room. The company offers two wireless subwoofers — the SA-SW3 and SASW5 — that can be added to the system.

Once the speakers are powered on, you need to download the BRAVIA Connect app and create an account (or log in) to complete setup. The Control Box has no OSD, and its LED display provides very limited feedback, so the app is required for accessing all of the audio system’s settings and info.

The app walks you through a variety of settings, including how to run measurements using the microphone built into your device to optimize the sound in your room. When running the setup test tones, I did notice some

Audio Quality My typical response to “How good is the TV’s audio?” is usually, “You buy the TV for its picture, not its sound.” But the sound on this OLED is a different animal, as it incorporates Sony’s Acoustic Surface Audio+ technology, using transducers to turn the entire screen into a speaker. Upgraded from previous models, the BRAVIA 8 II has dual “subs” for a proclaimed 4x improvement in audio performance.

The result is surprisingly decent audio quality, far better than from traditional displays where the tiny speakers often fire downward or back into the wall. You also keep some decent separation and a good sense of localization because the sound is literally coming from the screen, and the panel can produce room-filling volume levels in most environments.

While every TV benefits from an outboard audio system — whether that’s a soundbar or a full surround system — the BRAVIA 8 II has enough output that it could stand on its own, especially in a bedroom.

Another big audio feature is Sony’s new Voice Zoom 3, which uses AI to intelligently separate and isolate just the dialog so that every word is loud and clear. This offers a ±6-step adjustment that makes a significant difference in dialog intelligibility without raising (or lowering) the levels of other sounds, and for those who struggle with “What did they say?” this would be very helpful.

In another awesome audio feature, the TV supports having a simultaneous Bluetooth headphone connection along with either its internal speaker or an external audio system.

For couples who watch together where one person struggles to hear, this is a gamechanger, letting one listen through Bluetooth headphones/hearing aids at one volume while the other listens through the TV or audio system at another. Pressing the volume button on the TV remote even brings up separate volume adjustments for the headphones and TV/audio system. This is really a great feature, and kudos to Sony for including it!

Without question, the Theater Quad system upped the audio experience exponentially.

Compared to a traditional soundbar, the widely spaced front Left/Right speakers offer far greater stereo separation and width, and this was definitely a big improvement when

PRODUCT REVIEW listening to music in stereo. The system does a really great job of delivering an immersive audio experience, able to create phantom speakers well off to the sides and above my listening position.

Without a subwoofer, the low end is really lacking, and I would say that adding a sub is required for anything close to a theatrical experience. Without it, bass isn’t tactile or deep in any way. Further, I was able to hear cabinet distortion from the speakers with even moderately bass-y material, especially if the bass setting was set to max, but even when set to mid. However, when you add the better SA-SW5 subwoofer, you’re at nearly $3500 MSRP for the whole speaker package, which is certainly at the highest end of soundbar systems.

Connecting the S-Center output engages Acoustic Center Sync, which spreads mid and high frequencies from the center-channel audio to the display’s speakers, which does create a richer, more anchored — as well as elevated — center image. It's a subtle improvement. However, this S-Center feature only works when 360 SSM is selected as the surround format, which I didn’t like as well as the Dolby Surround Virtualizer, which I felt did a superior job of creating an immersive experience.

Performance The picture quality of the BRAVIA 8 II is just outstanding in every way. One of the first things we watched was Alien Earth on Disney+, and even before the show began, the Hulu logo screen appeared in such an incredibly vibrant, deep, bright shade of green that it was clear what the color volume of the BRAVIA 8 II was capable of.

It was an intensity of green I’d not experienced before. While watching HDR content, I was repeatedly struck by the incredible brightness and specular highlights, frequently causing my eyes to react like they would in the real world.

Dropping in the Spears & Munsil Ultra HD Benchmark disc and viewing a variety of test patterns and demo clips is a regular part of my display review, and again, I was taken by the stunning picture quality. The profound richness and depth of colors, along with plenty of brightness. Another clip I like to use to check how a display handles incredibly bright content is Alpha, mastered at 4000 nits on Sony’s studio monitor.

The detail of the circular sun and glowing shades of fire orange-red color in the sky are as good as I’ve ever seen them.

Can a Mini-LED — specifically Sony’s own BRAVIA 9 — outdrive the BRAVIA 8 II in terms of sheer overall brightness? Sure. But when it is a dark scene, the BRAVIA 8 II renders blacks

so perfectly deep and dark, it’s where it just steps away in terms of a cinematic experience.

And when a scene cuts to black, the BRAVIA 8 II plunges you into an abyss, becoming a black hole in the front of the room. I never noticed any noise, pumping, or other distortion in the black levels, whether watching real content or test patterns.

Subjectively, the screen or coatings used on the BRAVIA 8 II appear to be different than the regular BRAVIA 8 panel. The BRAVIA 8 II doesn’t appear to be as reflective; I wouldn’t call it matte, but the screen reflections are more muted, meaning it should work better in a non-light-controlled room. Interestingly, my ceiling lights reflecting off the BRAVIA 8 panel appeared blueish-purple in color, whereas lights reflecting off the BRAVIA 8 II were more orange-leaning.

While IMAX Enhanced content has struggled to get a foothold, Sony’s Picture Core streaming app has the largest IE collection, and the BRAVIA 8 II comes with 10 movie credits to “purchase” films for viewing. And with Sony’s PureStream technology, you can stream movies at speeds up to 80 Mbps for disc-like quality. We watched Venom:

The Last Dance, and while it didn’t improve the film any, it sure looked and sounded great.

My only real complaint with the TV is the BRAVIA Connect app. While the app provides really rich control over the TV, giving you direct access to every app you’ve installed, as well as quick access to picture adjustments and menu control, it frequently wouldn’t connect. It would say the TV was offline and not connected to the network, even though it was actively streaming something.

It would often require five or more tries to reconnect, which was very frustrating. The Theater Quad system, on the other hand, connected 100% of the time.

After living with the BRAVIA 8 II and watching hours of real-world movie and broadcast content, this display definitely earns its “King of TV” crown, giving consumers access to Hollywood, referencelevel video reproduction. Will technology im­ provements somehow find a way to produce an even better image? Undoubtedly. But for now, this is arguably as good as it gets. And together with the Theater Quad (with a sub!), it makes an impressive duo delivering an immersive theatrical experience.

When “Good Enough” Won’t Cut It

How professional calibration, combined with modern video processing, unlocks the full potential of today’s displays.

Step into an audio/video showroom today and it’s hard not to be impressed. Modern displays, including high-end flat panels, projectors, and video walls, often look better than ever straight out of the box.

Many ship with factory calibration modes that are reasonably accurate, sometimes even excellent by historical standards. But for professional integrators working at the top of the market, “good good” isn’t the finish line. It’s now the starting point.

Despite the improvements display manufacturers have made, there’s usually substantial untapped performance left on the table. And in an industry where competition is fierce and clients expect excellence, squeezing out that extra performance isn’t just about bragging rights, it’s about delivering measurable value and differentiation.

Even when a display is well-calibrated out of the box, real-world conditions can still have a noticeable impact. Room environments, in particular, can influence perceived contrast, brightness, and color accuracy. For projectors, the choice of screen material introduces yet another variable, often altering white balance and color in ways that create a challenge for the integrator to account for.

Proper setup and calibration of video sources, AVR settings, and any video switching or distribution systems are also essential. These elements are often overlooked, with many devices left in default or nonoptimal modes that compromise image quality. Such misconfigurations can cause degraded picture quality, even if the display itself is reasonably well set up.

In other cases, factory default settings may not be optimal. Performance can also vary unit to unit, and some manufacturers prioritize showroom punch over reference accuracy. It’s usually easy enough to switch to a better picture mode and achieve an improvement, but the real opportunity lies in going further, serving the client by fine-tuning the entire system to unlock its full potential.

Unlocking Performance: Calibration and Processing Most commonly, calibrators create precise 1D and 3D LUTs (LookUp Tables) that optimize grayscale, gamma, and gamut tracking for the specific display in its actual viewing environment. This ensures accurate image reproduction that reflects both the unique characteristics of the display and the room. While some displays support internal calibration controls, video processors such as the madVR Envy offer even greater flexibility and precision for achieving exceptionally accurate results.

Advanced calibrators often take things even further. They know display-specific configuration tricks that can significantly improve

native contrast, brightness, gamut coverage, and overall performance.

For example, they may manipulate certain internal controls or service menu settings that boost performance but invalidate the factory calibration in the process. Calibrators typically apply these types of performance-enhancing techniques, then use calibration with a video processor to correct the resulting deviations from the factory settings to maximize performance.

Furthermore, professional calibration isn’t just about tuning the display; it’s about optimizing the entire signal chain end to end. From sources and AVRs to processors and the display itself, every step in the signal path matters. Knowing how to configure and optimize all devices in the chain is crucial to unlocking the system’s full potential.

This is where video processors have become indispensable in highend systems. For instance, the madVR Envy supports 1D LUTs with up to 4096 points of grayscale and gamma correction, and 3D LUTs with up to 16.7 million interpolated points of gamut correction — levels of precision not available with internal display controls or other devices.

This enables professional calibrators to push performance to true reference levels, with extremely fine-grained control to apply targeted adjustments wherever needed.

Beyond Calibration: Real-World Processing Benefits While calibration ensures the image is accurate, video processing can make it extraordinary. The madVR Envy’s patented HDR dynamic tone mapping dynamically analyzes every frame, preserving highlight detail and delivering optimal brightness scene by scene. Its intelligent aspect ratio management can reduce or eliminate black bars and use non-linear stretch to fill more of the screen without cropping, creating a more immersive experience for both 16:9 and 2.35 viewing.

Not to be overlooked is motion processing. As screens grow and brightness climbs, motion blur and judder become more distracting. Envy Extreme’s MotionAI eliminates these artifacts without introducing the dreaded “soap opera effect,” preserving the cinematic feel while delivering a clear, stable image even in challenging content. Even elements like how subtitles are displayed and fit the screen are greatly improved, making subtitles seamlessly integrated rather than a distraction using the Envy’s Dynamic Subtitle Overlay.

Display manufacturers have done an impressive job improving out-ofthe-box accuracy. But “good enough” is far from “optimized for this client, in this room, with this display and these sources.” Professional calibration, combined with modern video processing, unlocks the full potential of today’s displays and creates experiences that truly stand out.
