SHOW NEWS

Show Opens With Great Anticipation

Literally thousands of excited attendees stood at the ready Wednesday morning inside the Orange County Convention Center. Gathered together, shoulder to shoulder in the lobby of the second floor, only one thing stood between them and finally entering the long-awaited InfoComm exhibition floor: The ceremonial ribbon cutting.

As 9 a.m. neared, and with the crowd’s anticipation running at a fever pitch, AVIXA CEO David Labuskes calmly strode to the lectern, accompanied to the dulcet tones of Corona’s “The Rhythm of the Night” emanating from a nearby

DJ stand. Welcoming the assembled masses to the convention, he paused to thank InfoComm 2025’s headline partner, Shure, and congratulated the company on celebrating its 100th birthday this year.

Labuskes then invited the AVIXA 2025 Board Officers to join him in cutting the ceremonial ribbon. Side by side, they stood—left to right, Secretary-Treasurer Mradul Sharma, Founder and Managing Director of 3CDN Workplace Tech; Vice Chair Tobias Lang, CEO of LANG AG;

Labuskes; Chair of the Board of Directors, Jatan Shah, President of QSC; and Leadership Search Committee Chair Cathryn Lai, COO of Sands Digital, Las Vegas Sands Corp.

With smiles and a flourish, they cut the ribbon—an effort rewarded by the joyous cheers of the crowd. With that, InfoComm 2025 was open. The crowd surged forward, now ready to spend three days of exploring the show floor to discover the latest and greatest technologies and solutions—and ultimately, their futures.

Bringing the Magic of Immersive Experiences to Life

Orlando is the host of InfoComm 2025, but also home to two of the world’s most beloved theme parks. Exploring the world of immersive experiences—which neighboring Universal’s Epic Universe excels at—made the opening keynote, “Experience Economy: How Technology is Shaping the Next Generation of Immersive Experiences,” a perfect fit to kick off the show. Todd Hougland, senior director, design and development, Ripley’s Believe It or Not! World Entertainment, led an engaging discussion on technology’s role in the changing guest experience.

cloud infrastructure and AI-powered intelligence and biospatial computing really helps tie those aspects together for our customers in ways that they can then provide them to their customers and really enhance that experience,” Zabel added on his company’s role in immersive development.

“We’re living in a time when the boundaries between the physical and the digital worlds are blurring faster than ever,” Hougland said, opening the discussion. “From theme arts to virtual production stages, from cloud-powered storytelling to AI-driven personalization, technology is no longer just supporting the guest experience, it’s quickly becoming the experience.”

Dang Ly, senior vice president/chief technology officer-Universal Destinations and Experiences, and Jeff Zabel, global industry specialist, AWS Immersive Experiences, joined Hougland to discuss how the two companies are collaborating

on bringing new worlds to life in the theme park and beyond.

“That’s one of the things that is really great about working in this industry is that we can start to fuse these different technologies in a way that we get a lot of new experiences and new capabilities,” Ly commented, talking about Universal Studios bringing movie magic to life for more than 60 years. He went on to add how much the immersive experience has changed from a decade prior, when they were fun and brought the wow, but everyone essentially got the same experience. Now, personalization is the key, and equally important is optimizing that personalization so that the experience is different every time.

“When we hear about the connectivity and the personalization, when we hear about connecting people and blending the digital physical worlds, this is where we think the power of AWS

Both Ly and Zabel discussed generative AI but focused on the power of agentic AI—a way of applying Gen AI to learn more about specific context actions and to be able to perform functions in that way. It enables immersive creators to become more efficient with less need for specific developers and programming capabilities, allowing everyone in an organization to do things they never believed imaginable.

Immersive experiences don’t come without challenges. Once upon a time, guests were happy with a created experience, even if it remained the same for years. Now, staying ahead of the curve and understanding the data to frequently enhance and optimize immersive attractions is a process that will never end. As Ly concluded, the concept of personalized experiences is going to continue to push people to think of new ways to connect people and blur the lines of reality even further, providing enormous value to the Pro AV industry.

A variety of such scenarios and options were discussed Tuesday at the “AI in the Production Process” panel, where speakers shared what tools they’ve been using, approaches they’ve taken, and some precautions that are needed when using AI for planning, execution, and post-production.

Leading the panel was Rachael Harris, production manager for Harris Production Services, joined by Chris Crichlow, founder & managing director at CFLEX; Greg Casparian, director of Creative Technology at Total Concept Integration; and Janell Smith, CEO and founder of IDTVFLIX.

Smith led the discussion on planning, sharing how she used AI at different stages of developing and planning production of a sci-fi property, Hive Mind. While she used them to accomplish tasks and provide insights, Smith didn’t take the results as written in stone. “I think we’re still at the stage where we are [using it for] cross referencing; I’m using it as a tool, but not solely for everything,” she said. “I think we’re still in the beginning stages of using it as a tool.”

Discussing project execution, Casparian emphasized the importance of having a clear understand-

Product Spotlight

ing of the AI tools you’re putting to work, and used a simple metaphor to make his point, holding up a wrench and asking, “Show of hands—who’s used one of these? And who’s used one as a hammer? Every tool has a job, and it can be used for other things, but we need to be very careful about what tools are being used on what particular jobs.”

Following up, he added, “Know your tools and their limitations, because at some point, whatever workflow or program you’re using, something is going to break, and you need to know how to take over in that situation. And if you don’t have the skills to be able to see where the problems are and troubleshoot them, then you have over-stretched yourself, and you’re just asking for problems.”

That led into the topic of being led by AI rather than leading the AI, and Crichlow provided a real-world example, where he and his team created an activation at a creative industry summit in

Munich and were asked by the client mid-show to radically change the room’s setup and purpose overnight. On a whim, he entered the parameters into ChatGPT to get a basic visual representation of what the request would look like. “It took my parameters and plotted, creating a whole bunch of stuff outside of the client’s original request,” he said. “The client then saw that, saw something shiny, and said, ‘Great, I want that,’ which…we then needed to be able to walk that back. So don’t show your clients fun things using AI tools when you’re in the middle of trying to execute and be mindful of what it is that you’re asking this LLM (large language model) to put together for you.”

As the story underlined, AI will increasingly be used to as a tool for live event production, but that adoption will have to be handled with caution, balancing the tools’ use against the insight and realworld experience provided by human expertise.

Alcons GR20: New Compact Powerhouse with Uncompromised Clarity

The GR20 2-way high performance point-source sound system, bridging the gap between compact point-source monitors and larger array solutions, offering an intuitive sound reinforcement option before the need for multicabinet arrays. Integrated Experience Tour: University of Central Florida

On both Tuesday, June 10, and Wednesday, June 11, higher-ed AV/IT specialists were invited to tour the University of Central Florida’s campus to see technology in action. For those in attendance, it was less of a tour and more of an interactive journey through higher-ed AV/IT. Over the four hours, Scott Pritchett, manager of multimedia services, Office of Instructional Resources, UCF; Don Merritt, director, UCF IT Instructional Resources; Todd McMahon, assistant director, UCF Instructional Resources; and the Office of Instructional Resources (a team comprised of technicians, programmers, designers, and installers) showed off a lot of the technological wow across campus, taking attendees to the Student Union and an in-progress classroom installation. However, it wasn’t simply a Pro AV showcase, as it also allowed for engaging conversation between the UCF staff and higher-ed attendees to discuss challenges, successes, and strategies for campuses.

“I love meeting with folks from other schools who do what we do where we do it,” said Merritt. “It’s one thing to talk about our standards and processes, it’s another to actually be in a space to have that conversation. Higher ed does a lot of knowledge sharing, unlike in the private sector, and these are the events that help us do that.”

While attendees were able to explore the

campus on their own, it was the Charge on Chamber, a 107-seat, hybrid-equipped meeting space—frequently used for meetings of the Student Senate and Faculty Senate, as well as some private events in the UCF Student Union— that highlighted the tour. Brandon Maitas, AV specialist for the Student Union, showcased a smorgasbord of Pro AV technology, including 81 Taiden microphones that allow users to message each other and vote right from the microphone base. Five Taiden Congress Moderator UI touch panels enable control of the room, including the eight lighting zones and Sony and PTZOptics PTZ cameras. Six JBL ceiling tile loudspeakers ensure aural clarity spanned the room for all to hear, while multiple Planar and Sony displays don the room for presentations and a Sony laser projector shines on the main screen.

The ultimate goal wasn’t the marvel of modernized technology. Instead, all campus integrations—which are mainly handled by the UCF OIR team—are standardized across classrooms, buildings, and even their multiple campuses across Orlando. Much of the AV/IT team is students, so ease of use isn’t an option, but a necessity.

Merritt said, “Do not build your standard to the exception.” The UCF staff design their systems, whether it is in the classroom or Student Union, in such a way that UCF faculty should be able to

log on, stand at the podium, and be ready to go in five minutes or less. You won’t see many complex systems across the campus, which is why both the Student Union and classrooms are powered by Crestron switchers, processors, and touch screens.

“The Integrated Experience Tours are a real gem at InfoComm,” Pritchett concluded. “It’s a great way to connect away from the crowds and really talk shop. We have an amazing team that is ready and willing to discuss the details of how we design, install, and support pedagogical AV at UCF. After the formal tour, attendees typically break off into small groups, adventuring around campus with their chosen technician or tour leader to discuss what interests them most. The connections and continuing conversations that come out of this are invaluable.”
