A city for students

With a thriving student population, the traditional student areas of Cardiff are found in the suburbs of Roath and Cathays, where there are plenty of cafés, pubs, bars and shops to cater for your every need.

In the city centre, traditional pubs, cocktail and craft beer bars sit alongside the larger nightclubs which all host weekly student themed nights, as well unique locations like The DEPOT – an original and experience led space established by Cardiff Met Marketing graduate Nick Saunders – offering a mecca for street food, drink, live events and the infamous BINGO LINGO!

When it comes to food, Cardiff can offer everything from the big-name chains to a thriving and award-winning independent food scene with regular pop-up events and festivals in unique locations around the city.

For live music lovers, Cardiff is home to a variety of smaller independent venues like Clwb Ifor Bach and the Tramshed, with the Cardiff International Arena, the Principality Stadium and even Cardiff Castle playing host to big named bands and artists.

St David’s Hall in the city centre and The Glee Club in Cardiff Bay are great venues for live comedy, and if film is your thing, Cardiff is home to four multiplex movie theatres, and a handful of pop-up cinemas which hold screenings in unlikely venues like Cardiff Castle and even rooftops and basements around the city.

For drama and musical fans, the iconic Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff Bay is a world-famous theatre and arts venue, and at Chapter Arts Centre in Canton you’ll find a cinema, contemporary theatre, bar and café all rolled in to one.

A city for sport

Cardiff has an incredible sporting heritage. You could spend your weekends here watching football at the Cardiff City stadium, international cricket at Sophia Gardens, ice hockey with the Cardiff Devils in Cardiff Bay and of course, international rugby at the Principality Stadium. If you’re into mass participation or non-competitive sporting events, the Cardiff 10k and Cardiff Half Marathon run every year, with a full marathon just a stone’s throw away in Newport.

Adventure – In the city and beyond For those seeking adventure within the city, there are plenty of options indoors, including climbing, whitewater rafting, ice-skating or swimming in a state-of-the-art Olympic sized pool.

Cardiff also has to be one of the UK’s best-placed cities for easy access to the great outdoors. You can enjoy surfing, coasteering or simply sunbathing at world-class beaches, or head to the Brecon Beacons National Park for biking, hiking or horse riding – all within an hour’s drive from the city centre.

“My favourite thing about Cardiff is the parks. Roath Park is a gem, and Bute Park goes on for ages and is so beautiful.”

Architecture BA (Hons)

Learn how to design buildings and make spaces for people in a creative and environmentallyresponsible way.

Architecture shapes the world around us. It re fl ects our societies and communities and influences the way we think and feel. Architecture dominates our skyline, transforms our cities, changes the way we live and work and becomes part of our narrative.

The degree aims to establish a creative dialogue between different areas of architectural knowledge: design, representation, technology, contextual studies and professional practice.

You will develop your understanding of these thematic areas and their integration through engagement in projects of increasing difficulty.

This will allow you to formulate architectural proposals that are spatially and technically resolved, with a robust theoretical basis. You will also learn how to effectively communicate your proposals within a professional context through a range of media.

Finally, special emphasis is placed on the architect’s responsibility in tackling contemporary problems of environmental concern, at the global and local scales (such as the climate emergency).

You will be actively encouraged to develop critical perspectives on how knowledge and creativity can be used together to arrive at design solutions that have the potential to render buildings, neighbourhoods or cities more sustainable in the short and long term.

The degree has been prescribed as a Part 1 qualification by the ARB (Architects Registration Board), the body that regulates the architects’ profession in the UK.

Upon successful completion of this degree, you will gain exemption from the ARB's Prescribed Examination at Part 1, the first step towards becoming a registered architect.

Your future

Robotics Engineering BEng/MEng

(Hons)

This integrated degree in Robotics Engineering will give you a broad exposure to one of the most dynamic and growing sectors in technology.

The unique design of the degree will offer you the opportunity to study the most exciting aspects of robotics and apply them to the design and development of sophisticated autonomous intelligent systems. You will be exposed to a wide range of robotics engineering theories and scientific applications, with consideration for the ethical issues surrounding the sector.

Hands-on experience with state-of-theart equipment will give you practical skills. The degree is integrated closely with the EUREKA Robotics Lab at Cardiff School of Technologies. The Lab is recognised by the UK Government as one of only fourteen specialist research centres in robotics in the UK, and the only leading centre specialised in social and service robotics.

You will have access to cutting-edge facilities and to some of the most advanced robots on the market. You will be able to work with social, service and educational humanoid robots with advanced artificial intelligence features, and robotic arms for industrial robotics research and development.

“I still remember the first time I piloted and implemented educational robots in the real world –how students, parents, teachers and the public were motivated, impressed and had fun interacting with the robots! It fuelled my interest in the interaction between humans and robots and led to a career researching how to embed human learning, reasoning and emotion into machines.”

“We had the opportunity to visit many local craftspeople, from ceramicists to wooden block carvers to miniature painters. It was an invaluable experience to witness the passion and commitment these people have to their practices. Attending so many workshops and meeting makers from such a wildly different culture than ours, we were able to gain insights into our own practices that might never have been developed otherwise.
